Octorara Students To Perform Play For Family And Friends lthough this year’s spring musical will not be open to the public because of the pandemic, Octorara Junior-Senior High School students will present “Grease: School Edition” to a limited audience. “We will be performing to a live audience, but it is limited to family and friends of cast and crew members. Tickets are not available for purchase,” explained director Joe Lynch, Octorara music teacher. “We have two casts for this year’s show to help limit the indoor numbers. (Most of) our male cast members perform their roles for both casts.”

The Red Cast performed on April 30 and May 1. This cast featured Kieran Lomboy as Danny and Kailyn Nuse as Sandy. The Blue Cast will perform on Friday and Saturday, May 7 and 8, at 7 p.m. and will feature Kieran as Danny and Hailey Rohrer as Sandy.

Lynch explained that the cast and crew started working on the play in mid-February with virtual and remote music rehearsals. “Recently, we have begun in-person, socially distant rehearsals with the casts to learn choreography and blocking,” he noted. “Grease: School Edition,” an abridged version of the original, is more age-appropriate and eliminates some content to focus more on the show ’s popular musical score. “We chose this show because it was a student favorite, and it provided enough roles for two separate casts to allow as many students to participate as possible,” Lynch said. In addition to Lynch, the production staff includes costume designer Nina Thwaites and choreographer Jessica Olinik. Seniors Hailey Roher, Olivia Dorton and Leah Davis head up the student leadership team. Dorton and Linnenbaugh are the dance captains. Lynch said the cast hopes to be able to perform the play for the entire student body.

The Chester County Studio Tour, which highlights the work of local artists, will take place on Saturday, May 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. As part of the tour, which is free and open to the public, the community is invited to view the artwork of 148 artists, which will be on display in 59 studios around Chester County. Nancy Fuhrman of Coatesville, one of the artists on the tour, explained that members of the public can visit the event website and map out their stops at the various artists’ studios at their own pace. “There are potters, printmakers, watercolorists, woodworkers and people who work in glass (featured on the tour),” said Fuhrman. “It’s a chance for us

to show our stuff and (for visitors) to know who we are.” Artisans are required to be in their studios during the tour to answer questions from the public, and many of the participants will do live demonstrations. Artwork will also be available for sale. Fuhrman said that the tour is always held in May, but because of the pandemic, last year’s event was moved to September with safety precautions in place. This year’s tour will also feature special COVID protocols. “ We all wear masks and have hand sanitizer. The hosts or hostesses make sure there are not a lot of people in (a studio) at one time,” Fuhrman said. “ We are following all the COVID precautions.” Those who visit Fuhrman’s studio in her home will be able to view paintings of his-
torical buildings from Downingtown, Coatesville and West Chester, including the Coatesville Cultural Society. Fuhrman is both a printmaker who creates etchings and a painter, and she will have both mediums on display during the tour. People who plan to take part in the tour may visit www.countystudiotour.com/ county-routes, where they will be able to map out their day in advance. Those who visit the artist or studio pages can plan their itinerary by selecting artists and studios they want to see, and the most efficient route will be offered. In addition, those who visit the site and click on “Find 5 Studios” can have the five closest studios selected just for them.
There are two maps available for downloading, one that covers northern Chester County and another that highlights the studios in southern Chester County. Studios on the southern Chester County map are located in Chadds Ford, Kennett Square, Toughkenamon and West Grove, as well as West Chester, which includes the Chester County Art Association, 100 N. In 2002, Good Samaritan Services (GSS) purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to serve five people at a time. Nineteen years later, GSS has acquired 13 different properties and can serve 200 people every day. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 after opening an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, emergency shelter, traditional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. “Our organization is unique in that we can help people with stable housing regardless of where they are in their journey,” stated GSS development and communications coordinator Shadoe Caprell. “A lot of times, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can’t receive assistance from agencies unless they reach the definition of homelessness. We can fill in the cracks.” Since July 2020, GSS has served nearly 400 men, women, and children through its emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support programs; provided nearly $90,000 in rental assistance, including 18 eviction preventions; and helped 53 individuals and families successfully complete their programs and find stable housing. “I get to meet individuals in our shelter and hear their stories,” said Caprell. “They’re all such wonderful, beautiful people. There’s such a stigma that comes with homelessness, but it’s so far from the truth. Anyone can become homeless at the drop of a dime.” Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. social services, the Brave Kids Center, The Factory Food Pantry, and the other programs offered by the ministry. Because staff members will represent their programs, those taking the tour will be able to learn about the programs from knowledgeable tour guides. Each tour will end in the gym, where appetizers will be served. Executive director Adam Nagle will speak for about 15 minutes to gatherings in the gym at both 7 and 8 p.m. Following that, teenagers and elementary school students will perform. The program in the gym will last up to 30 minutes. Lab noted that the homecoming is designed for those who remember the building from earlier days when it served as a school. “It will showcase how this historical building is being used to meet community needs,” she said. “A lot of people in this area went to grade school or high school here and have memories (of the building).” To keep the event safe for visitors and staff, time slots will be limited to 40 registrants. Lab noted, however, that there are other reasons for keeping groups of visitors small. “ We want quality tours of about 10 to 15 (people),” she explained. Master Gardener coordinator Meagan Hopkins-Doerr said that people call the hotline, which opened on April 16, about topics such as planting vegetables and fruits, growing ornamentals and native plants and how to prune flowers and trees. “(Questions) tend to be typical things a gardener would ask - plant identification and insect identification,” she said. “They ask about plant issues, including plant disease and treatment, and how to interpret the results of soil tests. They also ask for recommendations about soil type and what kinds of plants work well in different microclimates in our yard.” A microclimate, she explained, is a section of yard that is different from surrounding areas such as a garden located near a shelter or building that provides protection from the wind. “An example would be the crepe myrtle,” Hopkins-Doerr said. “Crepe myrtle is not a native plant, but many of us love them. If you want to plant a crepe myrtle, it should get plenty of sun but be protected from the wind.” When asked when to plant vegetable plants and

Moores Memorial Library, 9 W. Slokom Ave., Christiana, will begin offering a few events in person at the library. Patrons may call the library at 610-593-6683 for details or visit www.christianalibrary.org. Lego Club will resume in the downstairs Community Room at 6 p.m. on Thursdays, May 13 and 27. The library will co-host free Family Movie Nights with the Christiana Police Department. These outdoor movie nights will take place on Fridays, May 28 and June 18, at sunset in the parking lot of Chantry Place behind the library. Families are asked to bring their own chairs or blankets and snacks. The library will participate in the Longwood Gardens Community Read program. This year’s children’s selection is “Ruby’s Birds.” Children may pick up a coordinating activity sheet in the library. The Lancaster County Library Summer Reading Program will begin on Saturday, June 5, and run through Saturday, Aug. 14. More information and related materials will be available in the library in the near future. Preschool Reading Time will continue remotely on Wednesdays. Coordinating activities will be posted on Facebook for children to complete at home. The Read Moore Bookstore is open for in-person browsing and purchases. The library will accept donations of clean, like-new books to add to its collection during regular library hours. Guidelines for donating are available in the library. Donations should not be left outside. The Mother’s Day plant sale will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, at the Lions’ Park pavilion. Chicken barbecue meals will be available for purchase at 10 a.m. The cost of a meal will include a half-chicken, chips, and bottled water. Online plant sales will also be available on the aforementioned website for individuals who would prefer to not shop in person.

Due to the delayed start of the tax season by the IRS and closure of many other tax preparation sites in the area, VITA has seen an unusually high volume of customers using its free services. The borough of Lititz, located directly north of Lancaster city, is a town still heavily influenced by the Moravian colony that once stood in its center. The community was founded in 1753 on nearly 500 acres that John George Klein, one of the area’s first residents, donated to Count Nicholas Ludwig Von Zinzendorf, a Moravian preacher. The town has carefully worked the architecture of the Moravian Church, located at 8 Church Square, into newer buildings and successfully combined the past with quaint shops and attractive dining venues. The efforts helped earn Lititz the title of “America’s Coolest Small Town” back in 2013. But “cool” is perhaps too ephemeral a term to describe Lititz. With traditional enterprises such as Wilbur Chocolate, which still operates a retail store on Broad Street; the Lititz Springs Inn and Spa, built in 1764 as the Zum Anker; and the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, which is believed to be the oldest in the country, Lititz has much to offer visitors. Outdoor pursuits include a visit to Lititz Springs Park, a seven-acre plot featuring a band shell and recreation areas surrounding a picturesque stream. The park is
also the location of the town welcome center, an 1884 Victorian Gothic building designed by Frank Furness, where volunteers provide information about activities and restaurants in Lititz. The Warwick-to-Ephrata Rail Trail offers 8 miles to walk, run, or bike from its start at Oak Street to Ephrata. Bicycle rental is available at the Warwick Township Building. At the Wolf Sanctuary of PA, located in the Speedwell Forge area of Lititz, visitors may enjoy a unique chance to see wolf pack dynamics. The restored Johannes Mueller House and the Lititz Historical Foundation Museum are generally open from the end of May through December, offering guided tours that tell the story of the Moravians and how the town was founded. The wooden portion of the Mueller house was built by Klein in 1740, making it the oldest standing private home in Lititz. It was also the location of the Lititz post office from 1830 to 1849. The historical foundation hands out free historic walking tour maps of Main Street, which take visitors to about 18 buildings. Located directly behind the foundation are the Mary Oehme Gardens. The gardens, which are free to visit and open to the public as long as no events are happening there, are a tranquil area full of bright colors against a green backdrop. See Lititz pg 9

Pasta Primavera (Makes about 8 cups)
Ingredients: 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 cup thin strips prosciutto 2 cups cauliflower florets 2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms 1/2 cup sliced carrots (cut on the diagonal) 2 cups sliced zucchini 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 teaspoon minced fresh garlic 1 cup asparagus tips or 3/4 cup snow peas
1 cup chopped green onions 2 cups heavy cream 9 ounces of any pasta
Seasoning Mix: 2 1/2 teaspoons dried sweet basil leaves 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves 3/4 teaspoon white pepper 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon onion powder Directions: 1 . Combine the seasoning mix ingredients thoroughly in a small bowl. 2. Heat olive oil in a 12-inch skillet over high heat. When oil is very hot, add the prosciutto, cauliflower, mushrooms, carrots, and zucchini. Add the butter and, as it melts, stir in the garlic and the seasoning mix. Stir in asparagus tips or snow peas and green onions. Stir well and cook just until the vegetables are crisp-tender, about 4 to 5 minutes. Stir in the cream and bring to a boil. Lower the heat to medium and cook until the sauce has thickened a bit, about 3 minutes. 3. Cook the pasta according to package directions; drain. Add the cooked pasta to the skillet, toss well and remove from the heat. Serve immediately.

The competition is coordinated and sponsored by the PBA Young Lawyers Division. This year, 232 teams from 199 high schools competed in district and regional levels of Pennsylvania’s mock trial competition in hopes of gaining one of the 16 spots at the statewide competition that was held virtually for the first time. Pennsylvania’s competition is one of the largest in the nation.

With mere minutes of preparation and about 15 minutes of cooking time, this recipe for chicken, ham, and Swiss roulades from “Real Simple Dinner Tonight: Done” from the editors of Real Simple makes a simple weeknight meal that is tasty, too.
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1/4 cup whole-grain mustard 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper
Directions: 1. Heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Season the chicken with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Roll up each cutlet with 1 slice of the ham and 1 slice of the Swiss cheese. Skewer the roulades closed with toothpicks. 2. Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Add the roulades and cook, turning occasionally, until golden Chicken, Ham, and Swiss brown, 4 to 6 minutes.
