MTHS Band Drill To “Reach For The Stars” embers of the Manheim Township High School (MTHS) marching band were especially excited to be at band camp this year, noting that among the best moments were when they could high-five and hug each other. The 101 band members met at the high school on Aug. 9 through 13 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day to learn the 2021 fall drill. This year’s show, which will run more than seven minutes and feature seven space-oriented musical numbers, is called “Reach for the Stars.” Students will begin with

“Also Sprach Zarathustra,” which is the theme from “2001: A Space Odyssey,” by Richard Strauss, followed by the “Theme From Star Trek” by Alexander Courage and then the theme from “Star Trek 2009,” by Michael Giacchino, and the “Theme From Apollo 13” by James Horner. The final three songs will be “Space Oddity” by David Bowie, “Satellite” by Dave Matthews Band, and “Rocket Man” by Elton John. To reflect the music, band members will form a number of shapes associated with outer space, including the “Star Trek” logo, a UFO shape, and a variety of constellations. Even the color
guard uniforms will match the space theme as the students work with swing flags, 6-foot flags, and rifles. Lighting effects will also be part of the 2021 fall presentation. Several band members will be in the spotlight during the show, including brass captain Ethan Brokaw, who will perform a trumpet solo at the beginning of “Space Oddity.” In addition, Lily Barrall will perform trumpet solos during “Star Trek 2009,” the original “Star Trek” theme, and on “Rocket Man.” Janek Vedock will have a trumpet solo during “Apollo 13.” Assistant color guard captain Priscille Juin will perform a quadruple rifle throw during
the theme from “2001: A Space Odyssey,” and color guard captain Caitlin Schaefer, and guard member Lily Kilgore will perform a duet during “Space Oddity.” Color guard Dylan Luther will dance a solo in “Rocket Man.” In addition, the band will perform a visual feature while the pit plays “Satellite.” Erin Gray, who shares drum major duties with Niamh McConnell, noted that the weather threatened to impede progress during band camp. “A lot of the challenge is keeping up our energy when it gets really hot and humid,” she said. “We need to keep up the energy to stay productive.” See MTHS pg 6

Lebanon VAMC Awards Grants Southcentral Pennsylvania low-income veterans and their families who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless will have access to crucial services from local organizations via grants provided by Lebanon VA Medical Center’s (VAMC) Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, which is authorized by Congress. Every year, the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, serves more than 4,000 children. The Schreiber Center provides outpatient and in-home pediatric therapy services, such as occupational, physical, and speech-language therapy, for children from birth to the age of 21. In addition, the Schreiber Center offers early education preschool and child care services, recreational programs, behavioral health services, summer camps, and specialized classes for parents. “The people at Schreiber are amazing,” said Lititz resident Michael Mengel. When Michael’s youngest daughter, Nicole Mengel, was 2 years old, she received speech-language therapy from Schreiber until she began kindergarten.
“Nicole would not be where she is now without the help of Schreiber,” stated Michael. Nicole recently graduated from Adelphi University in Long Island with a Bachelor of Science in exercise science. On Sunday, Sept. 12, the Schreiber Center will host its 33rd annual Rubber Duckie Race and Festival. This rainor-shine event will take place from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at the Lancaster County Central Park, 1050 Rockford Road, Lancaster. There will be food, pony rides, face painting, and more. Attendees will see a race between nearly 25,000 ducks as they float down the Conestoga River. When people register for a racing duckie, they can receive a themed souvenir duckie. Themes include superheroes and ninjas, down on the farm, tech and gaming, foodie, and more.

Wohlsen Announces Promotions, Appointments Wohlsen Construction Company recently announced several employee promotions and appointments. Lisa Murray was promoted to director of human capital solutions. In this capacity, Murray will be responsible for managing the human resources team, focusing on team member recruitment and retention, learning and development and career advancement opportunities for all team members.
Jeff Drake was appointed as operations systems trainer. In this position, Drake will be responsible for the instruction and advocacy of Wohlsen Construction operations best practices for project teams across all regions. Wohlsen also announced the promotion of Autumn Whitcraft to human resources (HR) business partner. In her new role, she will focus on developing and implementing
a documented compensation strategy and will be deeply involved with identifying and implementing key team member benefits and the required compliance of them. Restart Banquet To Feature Josh McDowell
Organ Concert Series To Return
The First Reformed Church’s vintage 1958 analog Allen organ is housed behind an 18th-century Tannenberg organ screen.
First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will bring back its “Organic Reflections” concert series beginning on First Friday, Sept. 3. Larry Hershey will play on the vintage 1958 analog Allen organ. The series took a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The program, titled “Resounding Joy,” will include exuberant music composed by J.S. Bach, G. Boehm, A. Hollins, V. Hoyle and J. Lemmens. “Carillon de Westminster” by Louis Vierne will conclude the event. The concert is part of the First Friday series at First Reformed Church, a centercity congregation of the United Church of Christ. Concerts

Make-A-Wish Announces Fundraising Total The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy raised over $510,000 this year. The convoy was unable to hold a traditional carnival this year, so driver fundraising had a bigger impact than usual on this total. Over $228,000 of the total raised was raised by 30 fundraising drivers. The top 30 fundraising drivers from this year will lead next year’s Mother’s Day Truck Convoy in the order of their fundraising dollars. The drivers will learn their position at the Convoy Banquet to be held at the Barnstormers game in Lancaster on Sunday, Sept. 26. The top fundraising driver will be invited to throw out the first pitch of the game. The banquet will be by invitation only to drivers, committee members, and volunteers, but the public will be welcomed to attend the game to cheer on these truck drivers. In addition to the drivers raising funds for Make-AWish this year, Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction generated $162,000 for the truck convoy from the sale

Jaime Santiago, founder and executive director of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), an organization that strives to help men who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions, sees the goals of the RTCM in space mission terms. “Restart is the rocket booster that helps (students) get into the orbit of sobriety and recovery,” said Santiago. Once students are orbiting among the stars, Santiago said, they are sustained by connecting to a local church where they can continue to grow spiritually. “We help them blast off, but they have to utilize the resources in the community,” said Santiago. So, for RTCM’s sixth annual fall banquet, it is only fitting that the organization is featuring Josh McDowell, author of “Evidence That Demands a Verdict,” along with about 150 other books, and a star of the Christian publishing world. “We reached out to
Josh, and he agreed,” said Santiago. “The Lord brought Josh to us.” The event will be held at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 6:30 p.m. Call of Grace Band will provide special music for the event, and a freewill offering to benefit the ministry will be received. For McDowell, who has spoken in more than 100 countries, responding positively to RTCM’s request simply lined up with the goals of his nearly 60 years of ministry. “Restart’s mission is where my heart is with young people,” said McDowell, who noted that many of the problems of life begin during youth. “If I am going to have a lasting impact, I have to start with young people,” he said, adding that building confidence and positive relationships can prepare young people to deal with issues they may face later. McDowell noted that developing an honest self-image is

A Climb To Remember BY COURTNEY MENGEL
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on our country. Between the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives on that tragic day. Among them were 343 New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighters. In 1992, Congress created the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), which has developed and expanded programs to honor fallen fire heroes and assist their families and co-workers. The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a way for firefighters and the community to honor and remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who died at the World Trade Center. The first stair climb
was held on Sept. 11, 2005, when five Colorado firefighters convened at a high-rise building in downtown Denver to climb the equivalent of the 110 stories of the twin towers. Each subsequent year, attendance grew, and in 2010, the original Denver team partnered with the NFFF to create a template that would enable coordinators to host 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs anywhere in the United States. Eleven years ago, Scott Yuill, a volunteer firefighter at the East Petersburg Fire Company, was surfing the internet and discovered the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. Yuill decided to organize a stair climb in Lancaster because he knew someone who had lost his life during the terrorist

attacks. The Lancaster 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb has always been held at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. “The idea is for participants to think about the sacrifice those 343 men made that day,” said Yuill. “With everything else that’s been going on, I think we’ve all forgotten.” The Lancaster 9/11 Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Firefighters will have the option of wearing turnout gear and carrying equipment. All participants will receive a photo badge of one of the fallen firefighters as well as a T-shirt, which is included in registration. During the climb, moments of silence will be held at the times the towers fell. At the
end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the name on their badge and ring a bell, symbolizing the completion of the deceased person’s climb. Although encouraged, preregistration is not required because there will be sameday registration. To preregister, visit https://lancaster stairclimb.org/registration. Spectators are welcome. The Giant Company recently announced that Pennsylvania customers who participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will now be able to shop online for both grocery pickup and delivery via Giant Direct and Martin’s Direct using their Pennsylvania Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) ACCESS card. People in eligible lowincome households can adopt more nutritious diets with SNAP, increasing their food purchasing power at grocery stores and supermarkets. Those who are eligible receive an EBT ACCESS Card to make food purchases. Applications for SNAP and other public assistance programs can be submitted
at www.compass.state.pa.us. On-site County Assistance Office (CAO) services are also available if clients cannot access services through the COMPASS website, via the myCOMPASS PA mobile app or by calling the Customer Service Centers at 877-395-8930. To shop via Giant Direct or Martin’s Direct, customers need to add their EBT Card, add their groceries to their online cart and then enter their PIN and pay for the items. When customers shop online, they can only use their SNAP benefits on the same items that are eligible when shopping in the store. Minimum order values will not apply to SNAP users, but pickup and delivery fees will be applied to each order.

Stokes noted that more than $6,500 of the $25,000 goal had been raised by mid-August. Following the walk and ride portion of the event, an ice cream sundae bar will be available at the church. Stokes noted that families that are not able to take part in the Bike & Hike but would like to learn more about COBYS are welcome to come enjoy the Treehouse Playground of Lititz, an adaptive playground located behind the church, and then partake of the ice cream. “Come have ice cream and chat,” she invited, noting that members of the COBYS staff and a foster family will be available to answer questions.
Exhibit To Feature Sculpted Wood Art Kevin Bedgood will return to Mulberry Art Studios in September to display “Dreams,” his latest collection of sculpted wood art. A First Friday reception will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 3, and the exhibit will run until Thursday, Sept. 30. “Dreams” is about the future. This show is an exploration of design and relationship concepts, seeking new directions of artistic expression. Bedgood has been experimenting with new tools and processes as well as playing with negative space and how it relates to the shapes around it. He works with new shapes
and with ideas and studies the visual impact made by his pieces. Often his pieces will involve turning multiple pieces of wood and then segmenting them and reassembling the pieces. Bedgood has been working with wood since childhood, and the last 25 years have been an exploration of the boundaries of woodturning. The primary tool for his sculpting is a wood lathe. Nearly $4 billion in collectibles, dormant bank and retirement accounts, jewelry, military medals, rebates, stocks, and uncashed checks have not yet been claimed by their rightful owners. The unclaimed property may also include items from safe deposit boxes.

Stokes noted that this option is not only for individuals who are not comfortable meeting in a large group. “If folks just can’t make it Sept. 12, we want folks who are able to support COBYS in ways that work for them,” she said.

The squadron meets each Monday at 7 p.m. in the Venture Jets Hangar at Lancaster Airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Squadron commander Maj. Jerome E. “Pepper” Broad promoted seven cadets and awarded program ribbons to them. Broad also recognized the squadron’s cadet commander, Cadet First Lt. Jurnee M. Acosta, for completing an important step in her work toward earning the Amelia Earhart Award and promotion to captain. Aaron Keohane and Slater Shannon were each promoted to cadet airman first class and presented with the Hap Arnold Achievement Ribbon, to be worn on their dress blue uniform. This was their second promotion.

Diana Martin has been named executive director of the Hourglass Foundation, a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide reliable information to Lancaster County leaders to ensure informed decisions and make Lancaster a better place to live and work. She assumed the role on Aug. 2. Martin most recently served for six years as the director of communications and marketing at the Rodale Institute. Before holding that position, Martin was the communications manager at the Lancaster County Community Foundation, where she helped start initiatives like the Extraordinary Give.
