A Walk With A Story A Recipe For A Multigenerational Activity

ake one part walk in the park, one part engaging children’s book mounted in weatherproof display stands, and two parts interactive engagement; mix with delightful illustrations; and throw in a QR code. A dash of good weather is a plus. The Manheim Township Public Library (MTPL) put this dish to the test during May when StoryWalk was unveiled. “This activity combines literacy, physical activity, parental engagement, all in an outdoor setting,” said MTPL executive director Joyce Sands, who noted that the creation of the walk, which begins at the Children’s Discovery Patio in front of the library and extends along the walking path toward the Stoner House in Overlook Community Campus, was funded by an Earned Income Tax Credit Contribution from local organizations. The first known StoryWalk Project

was created by Anne Ferguson and developed with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, Vt. Karin Rezendes, MTPL youth services manager, said that having a permanent StoryWalk installation had been on the library’s wish list for a long time. Rezendes was amazed when the funds arrived during COVID-19, when the outdoors was a safer place to be. “It was like kismet how it all came together,” she said. “We started (working on this) when the library was completely closed.” The StoryWalk includes 20 permanent story boards that each hold a few pages of a book. In addition, the boards offer extension activities created by Rezendes, which may be questions, instructions, or interesting facts related to the book. “(The) ‘Let’s Move’ (segment) has kids doing yoga poses or (counting) how many chickens are on the page and then doing that many jumping jacks,” said Rezendes. “We are trying to engage the whole child.”

In the last five years, the ministry originally known as House of His Creation (HOHC) and briefly called Family of Restoration Ministries (FORM), has been through a number of changes. After becoming FORM in 2016, the ministry moved from Lititz Pike to the Brickerville area, but as of late 2019, the name had reverted to HOHC, and in February 2021, the ministry moved to the site of a former bed-and-breakfast at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz.

StoryWalk from pg 1 Rezendes said that MTPL did a soft launch with a story called “Ol’ Mama Squirrel” by David Ezra Stein in May. “I have been trying to pick books that have connections to outdoors,” said Rezendes, who chose “Chicken Story Time” by local author Sandy Asher, with illustrations by Mark Fearing, for the current walk. “This panel is about Sandy Asher, the author, with her dog, Gracie,” said Rezendes. One of the displays teaches readers that chickens are oviparous, which means egg-laying, and another notes that there are more chickens in the world than people. Added illustrations on the

panels are created by former MTPL employee Ben Fischer. The last story board is a QR code that can be used to provide the library with feedback about the family’s experience. The plan is for the next StoryWalk to feature “The Summer Nick Taught His Cats to Read” by Curtis Manley. Rezendes also is considering honoring the late Eric Carle by featuring one of his books in the future. MTPL is located at 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. Through all the changes, the mission of the ministry has been to affirm life by providing women with a place to heal and grow through maternity and after. In its new location, HOHC will continue to provide those services through maternity housing for women age 18 and up - especially women leaving abusive situations - who are in the first two trimesters of pregnancy and have been sober for several months. The women must also be willing to consider adoption and parenting plans and to take advantage of growth opportunities, and be educated toward reaching goals. Client housing for four women is provided on the second floor of the house, where each room has a private bathroom. The family living model includes individualized case management and education about basic life skills, finances, and parenting options, along with recreational activities. Michelle Gibbs, program director for HOHC, noted that a change from former programming models is the aftercare services that are available for one year after the mother is discharged from the program. “That means that I would come and do a home visit and assess how they’re doing,” said Gibbs. “We follow through with things they may have started and provide support so they don’t feel out there and alone.” Mothers who choose to actively parent often need to learn how to do that while working, but according to executive director Matthew Neff, women who make an adoption plan may be especially in need of aftercare. “When a woman makes an adoption plan, it is very emotionally hard,” said HOHC house mom and Matthew’s wife, Callie. “She may need help to navigate the roles and the relationships around that.” Callie noted that when the pregnancy was not the woman’s first, other issues may be involved. “(When a woman has) multiple children (who are) part of their story, then it becomes reunification or rebuilding relationship with children they haven’t actively been parenting,” said Callie. “Those children wouldn’t necessarily live here, but we would help (the woman) negotiate toward a goal that may include parenting rights in some cases.” Aftercare program goals include education in mindful parenting, empowerment to access community resources, and engaging parents to connect with other parents. HOHC offers parenting classes called “Parenting Journey” and “Parenting Journey for Fathers.” The 12-week experiential programs include guided discussion to develop knowledge and skills. Davis noted that the club is prepared to meet any social distancing or masking protocols that might be in place at the time of the event. The walk features more than 25 locations serving treats that are both sweet and savory, and that all include Wilbur’s chocolate among the ingredients. Participants visit local shops and partake of samples donated by area restaurants, bakeries, ice cream shops, and candy makers. This year’s Chocolate Walk will be held

in downtown Lititz on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fundraiser will mix some traditional treats and some new locations. “Scooter’s (Restaurant & Bar) will have its amazing chocolatefilled sandwich (again),” said Davis. “It’s all Wilbur chocolate,” she added. Davis also pointed out that Zum Anker Alley Shoppes will bring back the popular chocolate mice that have been featured in the past. “People love those because they are so cute,” said Davis, who noted that the treats include a maraschino cherry, Wilbur chocolate, and ears that she recalls are made of little pieces of almond. According to Douts, the organization was founded after the location was purchased by the Lancaster Area Sewer Authority in 2002. “A group felt we had lost so much history,” said Douts, who added that the borough was the smallest in Lancaster County prior to becoming part of Manor Township in 1971. Rock Heritage Center. “Washington Boro is very rich in archaeological history,” she noted. The current exhibit at Blue Rock Heritage Center, “Footprints Through Time,” takes visitors from the Paleo-Indian Period to the present. “When you walk in, you understand the timeline, which is PaleoIndian the first 16,000 years,” she said, explaining that the earliest culture in the area is traced to nomadic people, followed by Shenk’s Ferry people. Among the artifacts on display are stone tools, spear tips, and pottery. Saylor has also created an exhibit of mysterious petroglyphs, which are shaped like animals. “We don’t know the meanings of these,” she said. In addition, the collection includes butcher blocks, duck decoys, and information about ice harvesting, a crucial business prior to refrigeration. The organization is associated with the Circle Legacy Center, a Native American heritage group with an emphasis on the arts, crafts, and culture of indigenous people, and with Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, which holds regular classes on animals such as bats, owls, and vultures. Saylor noted that part of her job is to identify and catalog area archaeological finds. “Once an item leaves the area, its cultural value is lost,” she explained. “That’s why the heritage center exists: so we can show people … what a wonderful heritage this whole place has.”

Tickets for the show can be purchased on the day of the event inside the Farm and Home Center. The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club is a registered nonprofit organization that began in 2014. Its mission is to bring together local people who share an interest in geology and paleontology. The club has monthly meetings with presentations, and members go on local and out-ofstate field trips. Additionally, the club helps scouts earn their merit loops and badges, and a few qualified members teach geology for free - often on a field trip to the Pequea Silver Mines. Proceeds from club membership and shows allow for building rental, insurance for members, field trip expenses, events for scouts, and more.
