Pioneering Life Together BY COURTNEY MENGEL
About five years ago, Jenice Weaver and her husband, Glenn, saw that other school districts had ministry-based organizations that would allocate resources for families in need within the district. The Weavers soon realized there was a need something similar in Lampeter-Strasburg, so they founded the nonprofit organization LS Together, whose motto is “pioneering life together.”. LS Together attempts to determine what the needs are within the district and then pulls together resources to fill these needs. The organization runs programs only if they are not being offered elsewhere; however, if a program already exists, then LS Together will raise awareness to promote the program. Recently, LS Together partnered with Wanderlust Coffees in Lancaster. Together, the two organizations created the Pioneer Blend. “We receive 20% of the profits, which is very generous on their part,” said Jenice.

Class Of 2021 Graduates
On Friday, June 4, at 7 p.m., approximately 240 seniors from Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS) graduated. The commencement ceremony took place at the LSHS football stadium and was streamed live on YouTube. In an interview with the Advertiser, LSHS senior class officers Parker Owens and Jenna Lapp reflected on their time as seniors. A resident of Millersville, Parker is the senior class vice president and the son of Mick and Stephanie Owens. This fall, Parker will attend Carnegie Mellon University to pursue a career in mechanical engineering. The daughter of Amos and Freda Lapp, Jenna lives in Lampeter and
is the senior class treasurer. After graduating, Jenna will attend the University of Richmond. Advertiser: How did your senior year go? P a r k e r : There are several moments I will remember for the rest of my life, such as what school was like with COVID, the great memories I made with my friends, playing football with my team for one last year, and so many more amazing experiences. Jenna: My time as a senior has certainly been challenging, not just academically, but also because of dealing with the pandemic. My classmates and I have had to miss out on all the fun events we have looked forward to
since kindergarten, but I am thankful for what we still got to do and the new perspective of gratitude I gained from the experience. Advertiser: Are there any teachers or staff who made an impression on you? Parker: Several teachers helped sculpt who I am today and helped me achieve my goals. One of my favorite and biggest influences was my calculus teacher, Mr. Achille. He was a very helpful teacher and taught me several useful things that will help me in college. J e n n a : Our administrators, teachers, and entire community came together to support us and without that, our senior year would have been much worse. I have no
doubt that I will forever remember making the most of this school year with my best friends and finally coming together with the entire senior class for the last time at graduation after a year of being split. Advertiser: What will you miss most about high school? P a r k e r : What I will miss most about high school are the extracurricular activities that all my friends and myself would go to. Jenna: Going to school with my best friends and the supportive, fun, and involved community at LSHS that I have had such a great time being a part of. I will forever be thankful to everyone who contributed to making my last four years memorable.

Seniors from the LampeterStrasburg High School (LSHS) girls’ lacrosse team gave a donation to the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster. It is an annual tradition for seniors from the LSHS girls’ lacrosse team to choose a charity to support by raising funds. This year, the team collected donations during its charity night at the April 29 game against Manheim Township. After the funds were collected, the team’s booster club matched the donation total, explained team member Malaina Baucon. “We chose to donate here because cancer is a heavy subject and everyone knows someone going through the battle,” said team member Riley Dawson. “We had two alumni pass
away from cancer within the past year,” stated Jeslyn Krebs, also a member of the team. “We found it important to give back to a local facility because we wanted to help people in our community the best we could.” Also present when the seniors donated the funds was Nikolas Buescher, executive director of the cancer institute. While speaking to the team, Buescher shared his family’s history with cancer. “My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was in fourth grade, and she passed away when I was in college,” said Buescher. “Her mother had breast cancer, and my dad’s mother had leukemia. It’s in my family, so this institute and this donation is very important to me.” Buescher informed those present that Lancaster set a world record by raising half of the money for the cancer institute’s building. “There hasn’t been any type of philanthropy where a community

Golf With A Purpose Except for 2020, every year since 1994, Water Street Mission (WSM) has hosted a Drive Away Hunger Golf Tournament. This year’s tournament will occur on Friday, June 18, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. Supporting the general ongoing financial needs of caring for those experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County, WSM’s annual golf tournament invites local business professionals to enjoy a round of golf at a private club. After the match, participants will enjoy a catered meal with other players. “I’m looking forward to getting out on the course, developing relationships, and connecting people to the heart of Water Street Mission,” stated director of marketing Matt Clement. The golf tournament will help support services WSM provides for individuals experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County. WSM offers emergency shelter, residential programs, and
community food bank at its Outreach Center, as well as medical, dental, and behavioral health services. Additionally, WSM invests in prekindergarten and kindergarten education through its Wonder Club program and offers teen mentoring through its Teen Haven program. On average, WSM serves 400 meals each day in its dining hall; has 3,000 medical and dental visits
every year; and hosts over 170 guests per night at the residential and Providence shelters. “Drive Away Hunger is a great way for businesses to get connected and know more about the heart of Water Street Mission,” said Clement. “For businesses, it seems like they appreciate how being connected to Water Street Mission has impacted their business both externally and
internally. I think there is a lot that businesses can gain from partnering with Water Street Mission because what we do is so tangible.” Preregistration, which is required, can be completed at www.wsm.org/drive-away -hunger. Youth Conservation School Posted The Lancaster County Youth Conservation School will take place on Monday to Friday, July 26 to 30. Open to students ages 14 to 16, this summer field school is made possible through a 43-yearold partnership between the Lancaster County Conservation District and local sportsmen’s clubs. The program focuses on outdoor activities and conservation of natural resources. This year, the school will be a hybrid of virtual and in-person learning. Students will gain knowledge about wildlife and conservation, leadership experience, and opportunities to hone their communication skills. Topics will include
stream restoration, biodiversity, macroinvertebrates, forestry, canoeing, and wildlife management. Students will have opportunities to meet professionals in various environmental and conservation-related fields and discuss career options. The conservation school will also include a virtual visit with author Natalie Warren. A lifelong paddler and river enthusiast, Warren was one of the first two women to paddle from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay in 2011. Her new book is “Hudson Bay Bound.” Warren will share stories from the more than 2,000-mile journey when she meets the students. “Hudson

Three teams from Lampeter Strasburg Youth Soccer (LSYS) recently won tournaments. The LSYS U11 boys’ team won the York Cup Red Rose Classic on May 22 and 23. Despite the warm weather, the boys advanced to the finals, where they faced a team that they had lost to 2-1 on Saturday. The LSYS U11 boys won their final game 4-1, becoming the champions. Their weekend record was three wins and one loss. The LLSYS U12 boys’ team won the 2021 Berks Spring Classic, also held in May. The team finished first by winning all three games, scoring 14 goals and only allowing four goals scored against it.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will allow the Red Rose Blue Star Moms to begin to repair, restore, and replace many of the damaged or fallen headstones of veterans buried in the Lancaster Cemetery. For the past two years, the Red Rose Blue Star Moms group has been working to identify and honor each U.S. veteran buried in this cemetery. So far, the group has identified more than 1,200 U.S. veterans, 18 of whom are from the Revolutionary War. Blue Star Moms are mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers, and female legal guardians who have children serving in the military, National Guard, or reserves or who have children who are veterans.

The Lancaster Recreation Commission and AIM to Empower Yoga are partnering this summer to host Yoga in the Park, a series of in-person community yoga classes held weekly at various parks throughout the city. Lady Pioneers Advance to District Finals

Playing at home last Tuesday afternoon the Pioneer softball and baseball teams won their respective District Three outings while members of the track team wrapped up their season in the state championships Saturday, May 29. SOFTBALL Kieva Middleton tossed an eight strikeout, three hitter and the Pioneers continued their run through the District Three Class 5A bracket with a second straight shutout, 13-0 over Donegal in five innings in the quarterfinals on Thursday, May 27. Five days later they advanced to the finals with their fourth win over Elizabethtown. “Kieva was in total control,” said Charles. “We didn’t really expect a five-inning shutout against Donegal.” After a scoreless first, Cam Byler’s (2-3, 3 RBIs) two run double in the second inning was the big hit. Daisy Frank walked a run in before that and Emily Platt’s RBI base hit put L-S in front 4-0. Extra base hits were the talk of the second inning. Julia Gerard and Karissa Hirt (2 RBI) cracked doubles, and Chloe Blantz added a triple along with base hits from Ally Raub and Middleton as the Pioneers batted around and pushed five more runs across. And Middleton’s three run homer, her first of the season, highlighted the fourth inning.
“We are getting run production up and down the lineup right now,” said Charles. “And Kieva is probably pitching her best. She hasn’t given up a run in two district games now and the defense has been solid behind her.” The Pioneers continued to bang out hits, 12 to be exact, including three homers, in last Tuesday’s win over Elizabethtown. E-town jumped in front 1-0 in the first but L-S stormed back in the second as Blantz connected for a tworun blast that highlighted a four-run inning. One frame later, with two on and two out, Blantz launched another shot over the fence, extending the advantage to 7-1. “I was happy that we stayed focused,” said Charles. “We averaged 10 runs a game against them and it could have been easy to say we’ll beat them again. I really think going down 4-0 to them in the L-L League finals made this game easier and helped them to focus more.” The Bears got one back in the top of the sixth but L-S answered in the bottom half with Frank’s lead-off roundtripper, her first of the year. Blantz and Brooke Zuber each finished with three hits while Raub and Frank added two. Middleton scattered four hits, struck out four and walked four as L-S advanced to their first district final since 2018. “I think Kieva is the best pitcher in the L-L,”

Harnish again competed in the 800 where he finished 11th with a 1:56.55. “His best time, and our new school record (1:56.25) was set three weeks ago,” Esh noted. “He was seeded 14th.” On the girls’ side, Maggie Swarr settled for 11th place with a 117-10 throw in the javelin. The sophomore threw a career best 125-6 at the District Meet on May 14 where she finished in second place. BASEBALL The Pioneers opened District Three Class 5A action with an extra-inning thriller over No. 11 Spring Grove but that magic was missing in the quarterfinals on May 27. No. 3 seed Cocalico (15-3-1) avenged their 4-2 loss to the Pioneers on May 15 with a 73 victory and advanced to the semifinals. “Cocalico is a good team. They threw strikes and worked ahead in the count,” said head coach Jeff Swarr. “We worked behind in the count and they had timely hitting.” Cocalico scored single runs in the first, third and fourth innings and pulled away with a four-run sixth before Lampeter’s seventh inning rally fell short. Lampeter committed all three of their errors in the sixth inning, contributing to Cocalico’s rally. The Pioneers opened the seventh with Caleb Guyer’s base hit. Sports from pg 8 BOYS’ LACROSSE After suffering a 14-13 District Three Class 2A semifinals loss to Susquehannock, the Pioneers battled Hershey on May 27 for the third and final slot in the state playoffs. And for the second game in a row, the result came down to the wire, this time in overtime as L-S escaped the No. 5 seed Trojans 11-10 to keep their season alive. In a back-and-forth battle, Hershey won the faceoff and called timeout to set up a play. Brayden Smith was able to strip and clear the ball to the offensive end where Colin Sullivan netted the game winner. “The team rallied after losing Stewart McClain, our most productive offensive player, to a knee injury,” said head coach Mike McConomy. “It was a thrilling game and felt great to beat them after they beat us earlier in the year when we played them missing multiple starters.” Pioneer keeper Bryce Thomas recorded 18 saves in goal. Sullivan, with four goals and two assists, along with hat tricks from Conner Nolt (1a) and Barrett Denlinger fueled the offense. Stewart McClain added one assist and Jack Filius scored once. Lampeter’s state playoff got underway last Tuesday at Avon Grove High School where District One runner-up Bishop Shanahan waited. The Pioneers fell behind 6-1 in the first quarter, 11-3 at the half and 15-7 after three. Both teams scored once in the fourth quarter and L-S (15-6
overall) ended its season with a 16-8 loss. “It was a tough loss to end a great season,” said McConomy. “We struggled to win a face off and were beaten in transition. We played catch up the whole game but the guys fought to the final whistle. “I couldn’t be more proud of this group of young men,” he added. “They have taken this program further than any other team in program history by making it to the district semifinals and then qualifying for states but what the coaching staff is most proud of is how hard this team worked and how they played for each other. I have never coached such a committed group to making their teammates better on and off the field.” The Section Two champs were well represented in the recent all-star selections with seven different players receiving recognition. Stewart McClain and Connor Nolt were both named as first team attack, Carson Garver was first team defense and Barrett Denlinger was first team face-off specialist. Receiving second team recognition was Zach Labreque on attack, Drexton Frank on defense and Morgan Smith as long stick midfielder. Nolt was also an Academic All-Star while McClain received the Class Act Award. “Congrats to all of our allstars,” said McConomy. “They deserve the recognition and it is a direct result of the hard work they put in this year.”
Art Exhibits, Class Planned Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, has announced two exhibits and a class. The exhibits will be on display from Sunday, June 13, through Thursday, July 22. A Money Rocks Solstice Hike, for people age 7 and up, will take place on Sunday, June 20, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Money Rocks County Park, 936 Narvon Road, Narvon. On a guided loop hike of about 3 to 4 miles, attendees will explore rocky trails in the Welsh Mountains. Everyone should dress for the weather, bring a full water bottle, and wear shoes appropriate for hiking on rough and rocky trails. Participants should meet at the parking lot.

Camp GOTR will take place on Monday, June 21, through Friday, June 25, at LCBC Lancaster City at Liberty Place, 313 W. Liberty St., Lancaster. Lifecycles offers young people a chance to ride bikes while also sharing faith and friendship. BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Over the past seven years, Lifecycles has helped young people ride the equivalent of more than four times around the Earth on their bicycles. “I track all the mileage of our local rides and our bigger trips, and we have now ridden more than 110,000 miles,” said Lee DeRemer, who runs Lifecycles with his wife, Marcie. The organization is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18 and offers participants a chance to enjoy friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus. “We offer the boys and girls a positive experience, encouragement, a challenge, goal setting, mentoring and spiritual growth,” Lee explained. “Because our program includes all of that, there’s no room left for bullying or people making fun of each other. … We don’t have kids tearing each other down. We like to say we find out what the teens are doing
right, and we build on that.” Lifecycles began its current season on April 19 and is looking for more riders as well as more volunteers. Currently, the group has a girls’ team that rides on Mondays in Lititz and three boys’ teams one in Marietta on Tuesdays, one in Landisville on Thursdays and another in New Holland also on Thursdays. The group also rides on two Saturdays a month. “This is 100% free for participants,” Lee noted. “There is never any cost for the riders. We have bikes, helmets and food for them. the encouragement and the example you can set,” he stated. “If you enjoy riding, whether you’re young or old, slow or fast, there’s a ride group waiting for you.” The group is also looking for volunteers to help serve meals or sign in participants at weekly rides. Lee emphasized that Lifecycles is open to any youths in the county, and no experience with bike riding is necessary. “We don’t have tryouts,” he remarked. “If you show up at Lifecycles, we believe you’re supposed to be there.” Along with weekly rides, Lifecycle members have the opportunity to participate in longer challenges as well. A group of eight boys and five leaders will ride from the coast of Oregon to the coast of Delaware between Thursday, June 10, and Sunday, Aug. 8, covering 3,600 miles. Close to 50 others will participate in one of three weeklong challenge rides from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., later this summer. Lee noted that he’s been impressed with the impact leaders have made on the riders and with the way the youths have responded to the program. “For three hours on one of those evenings, or five hours on a Saturday, we pry the phones out of the teens’ fingers, and they find out they can live through the experience,” he said with a laugh. In all seriousness, he noted that God has been present with Lifecycles since the beginning. “We have ridden safely for seven years,” he said. “That’s a miracle. ABC Keystone Apprenticeship & Training Trust (KATT) recently announced that a record-breaking total of 108 apprentices have graduated in seven trades, including carpentry, construction craft laborer, electrical, heavy equipment operator, HVAC, plumbing and sheet metal. The ceremony took place on May 20 at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium in Lancaster. The ABC KATT manages and operates nine Pennsylvaniaregistered apprenticeship programs sponsored by Associated Builders & Contractors, Keystone Chapter. ABC Keystone’s apprenticeship program began in 1968, and this year’s 108 graduates represent the highest number of apprentices receiving completion certificates since the first class graduated in 1972. The following local apprentices achieved the High Achiever Award for earning the highest grade point average in their trades: Christopher W. MSTRC Awards Scholarships Twelve individuals were recently awarded scholarships from the Merit Shop Training and Research Center (MSTRC). The $14,500 in scholarships for the 2021-22 academic year brings the total to $550,350 that has been awarded by MSTRC since its inception, helping students entering a career path in the construction industry. The purpose of the Merit Shop Construction Scholarship Program, sponsored by ABC Keystone and administered by the MSTRC, is to assist individuals seeking to further their education in careers in construction. To be eligible, applicants must either be a permanent resident in the chapter’s service area or be applying to or attending a chapter service-area trade school, college, or university program that is directly related to a construction career. Programs include skilled trades, engineering, architecture, and construction management. Students are evaluated on recommendations, academic achievement, initiative, a written essay and community and extracurricular activities. The highest-level scholarships, each a $2,000 award this year, are given in honor of the late Richard Honabach, former ABC Keystone executive director. This award was established in 2000 in memory of his years of dedicated service to ABC. This year’s recipients include local residents Anne Russell of Landisville, $2,000 Richard Honabach Award; Cole Snavely of Lititz, $1,000; Westin Kolaric of Elizabethtown, $750; and Carter Snavely of Lititz, $750.
