Donegal Will Celebrate Homecoming BY CATHY MOLITORIS
en young ladies will vie for the title of homecoming queen when Donegal High School celebrates homecoming on Friday, Oct. 22. A carnival will be held at the school from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by a football game against Lebanon High School. The queen will be crowned during halftime. A homecoming dance will take place on Saturday, Oct. 23. The candidates for queen are Elizabeth “Lizzy” Allen, Emily Barton, Megan Harlacher, Aubree Jones, Emma Miller, Cassidy Paz, Nadia Rivera, Jessica Shaker, Rylee Smith and Mia Steffy. Lizzy is the daughter of Rashard and Michelle Allen of Marietta. She is alto section leader in the choir and is a member of the Rhythm Singers and Donegal Performing Arts (DPA). Outside of school, she records music with her brother. After graduation, she plans to continue her studies in the music industry with the goal of becoming

either a recording artist or an interior designer. Emily is the daughter of Michael Barton and Danielle Barton of Mount Joy. She is a member of Student Council, Mini-THON and the Spanish club. She plans to attend college to major in psychology and minor in environmental health. Megan is the daughter of Scot Harlacher and Sue Harlacher of Mount Joy. She has been class vice president for four years and is a member of the marching and jazz bands. She plays tennis and is a member of DPA and the booster club. After graduation, she plans on studying architecture. Aubree is the daughter of Tom and Rochelle Jones of Maytown. She is co-captain of the tennis team and is a member of National Honor Society (NHS). She is secretary of DPA and has performed in multiple plays and musicals. “Cabaret” will be performed at Susquehanna Stage.
What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play - and enjoy the singing and dancing, too, when Susquehanna Stage presents “Cabaret.” The show will be performed on Fridays through Sundays, Oct. 22 to 24 and 29 to 31, as well as on Thursday, Oct. 28. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. except for Oct. 24, when the show will be performed at 2 p.m. “This is a very entertaining show,” said Ben Fortier, who plays the Master of Ceremonies. “It’s a show that you think you’re ready for
anything to happen, and then you have the rug pulled out from under you. The show opens on a vibrant note, and it ends on an eerie one.” Set in the Kit Kat Klub in 1930s Berlin, “Cabaret” intertwines nightlife with romance and political undertones as the Nazi party is ascending to power. It focuses on the relationship between American writer Cliff Bradshaw and British cabaret performer Sally Bowles with a subplot about a German boarding house owner and her Jewish suitor. The action is overseen by the Master of Ceremonies. Directed by Keifer Kemmerly, “Cabaret” features a cast of 18.

These sessions will be offered by donation before a 15-week session begins in January for a fee. “Parenting is the most important job you’ll ever have and the most difficult,” Dolan said. “I want parents to know they have support on their parenting journey and are not alone.” In a typical Children’s Playroom session, staff members and volunteers oversee playtime, which includes crafts, painting, puzzles and other activities, followed by a music activity and reading time. While the children enjoy a snack, parents participate in a discussion on a different topic each week, including positive discipline, stress management and potty training. The goal of Children’s Playroom, Dolan noted, is to help parents develop positive parenting skills and improve their parent-child relationships. Parents also learn to develop realistic expectations for young children while exploring developmentally appropriate activities for their children. Dolan, who is the executive director, started the program in 1998 under an agency called Parentworks in Harrisburg. In 2004, when that orga-
nization closed, she started the process of getting her own nonprofit up and running and received her nonprofit status in January of 2005. The program works, Dolan stated, because parents soon realize they are not alone. And, she added, Children’s Playroom has a positive impact on the little ones as well. “Not only do moms benefit, but children have the benefit to play with others and develop socialization skills,” she remarked. “ While mostly mothers attend, the program is open to both parents.” As Kelly, a young mother who participates in the program, noted, “When I started in the Playroom … I felt very isolated at home. There was kind of no one else to talk about the struggles I was having with parenting.” Sarah, a mother of two children, said the structure of the sessions helped her to hone her parenting skills. “I think without Playroom, I would have been a very reactionary parent,” she stated, “and Playroom has taught me that there’s always a feeling behind a child’s behavior.” For more information on Children’s Playroom, visit www.childrensplayroom.org.

Everyone Loves A Parade BY CATHY MOLITORIS
With a theme of “Reunited and It Feels So Good,” the 74th Mardi Gras Halloween Parade will return to Columbia on Thursday, Oct. 28. The parade will step off at 7 p.m. from 10th and Manor streets before proceeding along the 1.5-mile route that will include blocks of Manor, Fourth, Union, Second, Locust and Sixth streets. The parade is sponsored by the Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers, which have announced that Robert A. Herman Jr. will serve as grand marshal. He and his wife, Sylvia, will lead the parade in a horse-drawn carriage. Five divisions will be featured in the parade, and attendees will be able to see high school marching bands, baton groups, Scout troops, floats, walking groups, fire companies and local businesses. A steam calliope will be the final unit, which has been a tradition for nearly 20 years. “Everyone loves a parade, and that’s especially true in Columbia,” said Paul Resch, vice president of the Lions Club. “People really look for-
ward to both the Memorial Day parade and the Halloween parade. … We’re ready to put on an awesome parade this year, hopefully one of the biggest and best ever.” Resch noted that interest in the parade is higher than usual this year since the past three parades - two Memorial Day parades and one Halloween parade - have been canceled due to the COVID19 pandemic. Last year is believed to be the first year the Halloween parade was canceled in its history. Parade organizers are encouraging spectators to light up the parade route with their cell phone lights as a sign of unity and a tribute to all those affected by the coronavirus as the first division passes by. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in various categories. John Grunden, Lions Club treasurer, explained that judges are anonymous and roam the parade route to rate entrants on their overall appearance and performance. This system helps ensure that parade viewers get a fair representation of what each unit has to

offer, including things that might have been missed if the entrants were to save their best performance for a specific reviewing area. Several nonprofit organizations will sell food along the parade route. For the safety of spectators, parade participants are reminded not to throw candy from floats, Resch said. Handing out candy along the curb line is permitted. Columbia Borough Police have identified social distancing zones along the parade route that will be designated as no parking areas to allow spectators to spread out along the curb line and safely
watch the parade. Municipal parking lots at 102 Locust St. and the 200 block of Avenue H will be open, and parking will be available from 6 to 9 p.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 121 S. Men age 16 or older are invited to participate in a double elimination three-on-three basketball tournament, to be held outdoors on Saturday, Oct. 30, at Calvary Bible Church, 629 Union School Road, Mount Joy. This opportunity for friendly competition will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3 p.m., and PIAA referees will be available for each game. Trophies for winners, as well as free food and refreshments, will be provided by Calvary Bible’s Men’s Ministry and Global Outreach Committee. No cost is involved for participants or spectators. In the case of rain, the event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 6. Space is limited. Mount Joy Artist Featured At Landis Homes Bob Redcay, a Lancaster County native, is exhibiting his artwork in Crossings Gallery, located in the Calvin G. & Janet C. High Learning & Wellness Center at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The exhibit will be on display through December from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays to Sundays. The show features an eclectic assortment of watercolors, acrylics, oils,
charcoals and more on a variety of surfaces, including traditional canvases, dried leaves and rocks. Redcay was inspired by his creative mother, Darlene Redcay, a former Landis Homes resident, to further explore his artistic ability in the late 1990s in a local watercolor class. During the ensuing years, he studied with artists Susan Darling of Marietta and Pete Foley, formerly of Mount Joy. His
work has been shown at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, local fairs and the Heart of Friendship Gallery, operated in Lancaster city by Friendship Community. Redcay holds a Master of Social Work and has been employed at Friendship Community as director of human resources since 2000. He lives in Mount Joy with his wife, Cindy, where they attend Cross Roads Brethren in Christ Church.
They have two adult children. His in-laws, Glen and Ethel Sell, currently reside in a cottage at Landis Homes. Bob’s sister-in-law, Cheryl Hollinger, is employed by Landis at Home, a home services provider. Visitors to the exhibit must be screened and masked. Silent Samaritan Luncheon Posted The 26th annual Silent Samaritan Luncheon will take place on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 11:30 a.m. at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. All women are invited to attend. The keynote speaker will be Diane Brandt, local liturgical artist and spiritual director. Donegal Punches Ticket to League Tourney

Two wins and a draw capped the regular schedule, for Donegal’s field hockey team, boosting them to a strong finish and a 9-6-1 record, while their Section Two record of 7-3 earned them a ticket to the L-L League Tournament. Senior night ended in a 3-3 draw while hosting Daniel Boone on Monday October 11th. The early minutes were all about the Indians with goals coming from Hailey Hauck, Grace Dickinson, and Emma Miller in the first quarter, but Daniel Boone rallied for a trio of responses in the third frame to level the scoreboard.
Though a victor was not to be determined in the showdown, the night was all about celebrating the team’s graduating seniors and their contributions to the program. CC Emswiler (three saves), E. Miller, Paige Miller, Victoria Burton, and Reagan Clark were the five seniors honored prior to the competition. “I am so proud of the seniors-they have demonstrated leadership on the field and off the field with athletics and academics,” praised head coach Gina Allessie. “They play hard, and they play together for the greater good of the team. When others are down, they lift up their teammates. It’s been a pleasure

coaching this group of seniors and I know wherever life takes them, they will be successful.” The Tribe closed out the regular season outlasting Berks Catholic by a 3-3 count on October 12th. Berks struck first and held a tenuous 1-0 lead for the first half of the game, but Donegal regrouped for three second half goals to overtake them. Makayla Ober and Sarah Gainer notched third quarter goals for Donegal, but Berks found the equalizer to knot the game at two apiece headed into the final segment. With the clock ticking down to 1:43 remaining, Reagan Clark connected for Donegal’s winning goal. The previous Wednesday, the club pulled away to a 4-1 triumph over Cocalico to celebrate their seventh league success and final league showdown.
Donegal netted three of those four goals in a second quarter surge kickstarted by a Dickinson goal assisted by Sarah Gainer. Cocalico chipped in their lone goal two minutes later to keep the game competitive. E. Miller and P. Miller paired for a goal and assist respectively midway through the quarter, and Jade Haines supplied an unassisted goal with less than a minute remaining in the period. Riding their momentum after the break, Donegal held Cocalico scoreless in the second half and Gainer took a turn at the offensive helm, netting the Indians’ fourth goal, assisted by Haines. Emswiler accumulated 14 saves across the three contests. CROSS COUNTRY Both boys’ and girls’ cross country teams sprinted their way past Lancast-
er Catholic and Columbia for double victories on Tuesday the 12th. Crossing in first and second for the girls was Hadley Shoaf (19:58) and Marleigh Ballard (20.37). Donegal owned six of the top ten finishes with Addison Houck in fourth, Emma Myers sixth, Natalie Greiner seventh, and Bailey Shoaf ninth. In the boys’ race, the frontrunner was Sam Rothstein who won the event in 16:36. Teammate Hunter Gehman also crossed the finish under the 17-minute mark with a time of 16:59. Dylan Lenhart (17:55) grabbed fifth place, Braden Bistline (18:24) ninth, and Zachary Karpel (19:31) took 11th. TENNIS Janelle Kingsboro and Emily Frownfelter blazed their way through the Flight Three doubles bracket at the 2021 Flighted tournament, finishing as runners up after falling to Flight Three champions Lindsey Steele and Kaitlyn Finn of Lampeter-Strasburg on October 11. “Janelle and Emily had a great tournament. They won their first match 80, and then had a great Saturday,” praised coach Trent Hoffmaster. The duo earned their spot in the championship match after a tie-breaker triumph over Cocalico. On their way to the semis, the pair took down Pequea Valley opponents before upsetting the third seeded duo from Lancaster Catholic in quarterfinal action. Aubree Jones celebrated a run to the semis in the Flight 4 singles bracket, easily cruising past her first two competitors with straight set victories. Jones’ run came to a halt in a semifinal loss to Hempfield’s Lydia Sullivan. BOYS’ SOCCER Donegal boys’ soccer went on a seven game win streak to close out the regular season 12-4-1 ending with a 4-2 non-league win over Daniel Boone October 9th. Joseph Turbedsky put the Indians on the scoreboard with the first goal of the game and lead scorer Tye White acquired a hat trick in the home contest, serving up one first half goal and two in the second. Josh Leidich dished assists to both Turbedsky and White, and Dylan Wakefield assisted White’s second goal on the way to victory. Daniel Boone netted a pair of successes in the first half to keep things close, but Indians’ keeper Nevy Ncube put a stop on five shots on goal to thwart a comeback attempt. Donegal faced their final league opponent the previous week and overcame Octorara 3-0. After a scoreless opening half, White once again proved to be an offensive threat, netting back-to-back goals in the second half, with LD Hanes and Turbedsky lending assists. With just four minutes remaining, Wakefield iced the contest with an unassisted goal. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Lady Indians demonstrated their improvement with a 4-1 win over Octorara on October 7th, a team that had handed them a 4-2 defeat earlier in the season. The home field contest featured a trio of goals from junior Laken Merchant, complimented by a goal and two assists from Reagan Cook and an assist from Holly Herbert. Octorara certainly saw opportunity, but only netted one goal thanks to the presence of Donegal keeper Clara Bigony who recorded a staggering 18 saves.

Half of the proceeds will go toward the church’s elevator fund, while the other half will be split between Donegal Power Packs and the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank. “The bazaar is a great activity for the church,” Eshleman said. “It provides opportunities for fellowship throughout the year as we prepare for it. For the people who come to it, you can buy gifts for yourself or for others for Christmas, and the food table is always a good place to buy a sweet. Agency To Supply Veterans With Groceries LancasterFunding.org, a nonprofit agency based in Lancaster, is seeking donations to help veterans age 68 and older with the expenses of purchasing food. Initially, the program will cover Lancaster County, but the goal is to expand throughout Pennsylvania and eventually to other states. The agency was launched in February by veteran Dale Vega to supply veterans with groceries. The program is sponsored by donations from small

“We have three main categories for our bazaar,” said Mary Ann Eshleman, bazaar organizer. “We have food, crafts and a white elephant area.” This year, the food will be available to go only. “We’ll have cold soups and barbecue that people can take home to heat up,” Eshleman explained. “We’ll be serving beef vegetable soup, chicken corn (soup) and ham and bean soup, plus pork and hamburger barbecue as well as baked goods, candy and snacks. People love the snacks and baked goods table. They come in, and they go right to that.” The bazaar will also feature a wide variety of crafts. “It’s really like a mini craft show,” Eshleman noted. “We’ve got holiday-themed Christmas items, fall items, décor that can be out year-round. We have wreaths and arrangements. There’s a whole section of jewelry, including beaded earrings, necklaces and bracelets.” A church member who crochets will offer handmade hats, scarves and stuffed animals, and members of the congregation will feature their wood creations, including pallet wood furniture, birdhouses,

Four members of Boy Scout Troop 51 in Elizabethtown held a joint Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Aug. 1 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown. The youths had been unable to hold their Courts of Honor the prior year due to COVID. This year’s ceremony was originally planned to be held in the outdoor amphitheater at the Elizabethtown Community Park, but the threat of inclement weather moved the ceremony indoors. The honorees were Patrick Boyer, Carson Brantley, Aidan Mollohan and Evan Ott. Patrick, 17, is the son of Thornton Shriner and Dana Boyer, as well as the grandson
of Craig and Karen Boyer. He is a senior at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), and his Eagle project was the construction of a gaga pit at the Trolley Line Park. Carson, 17, is the son of Christopher and Aimee Brantley, and he is a senior at Lancaster Country Day School. His Eagle project entailed constructing eight robot game tables for use by the First Lego League teams at his school. Aidan, 18, is the son of Sean and Mary Ann Mollohan. He is a first-year student at the University of Pennsylvania, studying mechanical engineering. For his Eagle project, he placed a Steelton

In September, the Society of American Florists (SAF) recognized Kenneth Royer, inducting the Lebanon resident into the Floriculture Hall of Fame at the association’s annual convention in Orlando, Fla. He was honored for his contributions to the industry. Kenneth’s son Greg, chairman of Royer’s, accepted the award on his father’s behalf.. SAF noted that Kenneth was the first florist in the country to implement computerized systems for his stores and was among the first florists to import flowers directly from South America. In 1998, he published the book “Retailing Flowers Profitably,” and he has held dozens of seminars on topics from marketing to management and post-harvest care, according to an article on SAF’s website. Kenneth also served on the boards of SAF and the American Floral Endowment. Industry recognition is nothing new for Kenneth. In 1983, he was inducted into the American Academy of Floriculture and was named Pennsylvania Retail Florist of the Year. In 1986, SAF presented him with its Golden Bouquet Award. In 2004, he received the FTD Lifetime Achievement Award.
Kenneth’s mother, Hannah, started growing African violets on the windowsill of the family’s home. The Lancaster Conservancy has received a $10,000 gift from Stauffers of Kissel Hill, which opened a new Stauffers Fresh Foods store this past spring in the Mount Joy Square Shopping Center. The philanthropic contribution will support the conservancy’s conservation efforts. During the check presentation ceremony, Phil Wenger, president of the conservancy, and Fritz Schroeder, senior vice president of community impact with the conservancy, received
the donation from Eric Stauffer, Fresh Food chief operating officer (COO); John Welsh, store manager; and David Julian, assistant Fresh Food COO. The conservancy protects and manages nearly 8,000 acres of natural lands and owns 47 nature preserves. These preserves serve as open natural space for wildlife habitat, outdoor recreation, water protection and carbon storage. This donation is a continuation of Stauffers’ commitment to greener practices, which include
an initiative that began in 2020 when the company encouraged the elimination of single use plastic bags from its checkout. As a locally owned company, Stauffers believes in investing in local environmental initiatives and was attracted to the Lancaster Conservancy because of its conservation efforts.
