Cold Applied Vessel linings TAke The heAT “In recent years, we see more process vessel linings being specified at the design stage to prevent corrosion. Anecdotal evidence suggests that lining a vessel at the design stage with an epoxy coating in place of using metal cladding is more cost-effective when taking into account the life-cycle costs.” – Jeremie Maillard, Belzona Oil and Gas Industry Manager. In 2009 Belzona high-temperature linings were used to prevent corrosion in four pressure vessels, which remained in use for three years on P57 FPSO to process oil from the Jubarte field, Brazil. Inspection of the dehydrator in 2013 showed no signs of deterioration in the lining and the customer has commissioned further work to commence in 2014.

Death of the Drives & Motor Salesman? Britain is the biggest online shopping nation in the developed world, with almost two-thirds of adults using the internet to buy goods or services. Consumers in the UK are using their devices to shop more than ever. Figures from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) show that six out of ten British adults use the internet to buy products such as food, clothing, music, holidays, engineering products and services. This is twice the average of the OECD’s 34 member states, which include the US, Germany, Australia and France. On average, just three out of ten people in OECD nations buy goods or services online.

Britons spent £68.2 billion on the internet last year, an increase of almost £10 billion on 2010, according to IMRG, a body which represents the UK’s online retailers. “We are seeing a change in the way our clients are sourcing Variable Speed Drives and Motors today”, says Kevin Brown Managing Director of Quantum Controls. The UK’s leading supplier of ABB Drives and Motors since 1994.

DRIVES & MOTORS SALES, SUPPORT & SERVICE

Engineers and procurement professionals all have internet access today and buying online is becoming a preferred method. In the past it had been a problem as company credit cards would not generally be issued hence making a on line transaction impossible. But this is not the case today even if a company credit card is not available buyers can purchase through Quantum’s innovative web site using Pay Pal or the traditional official order number method making it the easy option for buyers of engineering goods and services. You don’t have to be an existing client either, simply place your order online with Quantum and the order will be processed. “It’s never been easier to order ABB Drives and Motors on line, full technical specification, part numbers, GA drawings and net prices are accessible in seconds” says Brown. “Our clients have more pressure on their time than ever

before so buying online provides a quick and reliable way to shop in our industry; it is inevitable that the buying methods within engineering follow society as whole”. The full range of ABB Variable Speed Drives along with the new range of ABB IE3 Motors are available for you buy today at;

Supermarket Enforcer Helps Unblock Barrier to Automation By Grant Collier BARA/PPMA (British Automation and Robot Association) Tasked with ensuring that supermarkets treat their suppliers fairly and lawfully, the role of the Groceries Code Adjudicator (GCA) will undoubtedly have a positive effect on confidence in much needed Automation for the Food Sector. With her responsibilities backed up by law, Christine Tacon can not only launch investigations into suspected breaches of the Groceries Supply Code of Practice (GSCOP), she can also name, shame and even fine the culprits for any misconduct. This former boss of the Co-operative Group’s farming business will explain at the first day’s seminar programme at the PPMA Show 2014 on September 30th, and is keen to resolve issues affecting the entire supply chain, thereby encouraging greater investment in automation within the food sector. Underlining her commitment to improving conditions right across the supply chain, Christine Tacon is keen to hear from indirect, as well as direct, suppliers, either personally, anonymously or through a trade association – and this doesn’t just mean front-line organisations such as the Food & Drink Federation or the National Farmers Union; it also includes the PPMA. At a recent seminar organised by the Westminster Food & Nutrition Forum, entitled ‘The Groceries Code Adjudicator and the next steps for the food supply chain’, Christine announced her plan to crack down on unscrupulous practices by the multiple retailers. Regarding retailers charging suppliers hundreds of thousands of pounds for discrepancies on promotions going back up to six years, Christine stated that she was seeking agreements from the major retailers to restrict their use of such ‘forensic’ investigations. Another frequent complaint that Christine is seeking to outlaw relates to retailers deducting payments from meat suppliers for failure to receive full orders, as a result of ‘shrinkage’ in the supply chain after goods have been dispatched. According to Grant Collier, PPMA Group’s Head of Marketing, Christine’s appointment has significant implications for PPMA members: “This is good news as far as automating the food sector is concerned, and also for our members, most of whom supply machinery to the food sector. After surveying the 367 manufacturers that took part in the government’s Automating Manufacturing Programme there is clear evidence that the reluctance to adopt automation is in part driven by endless squeezing of supplier margins by the major multiple retailers. The Adjudicator’s actions will hopefully help to change this culture and enable much-needed automation of the UK’s largest industry.” Christine herself is equally certain of the benefits to be gained right across the supply chain: “I am sure that if we can increase trust between retailers and their direct suppliers, it will lead to greater efficiency and can only have a beneficial impact on the rest of the supply chain.” With the Grocery Code Adjudicator determined to shake up the food sector, her appearance at the PPMA Show 2014 is not to be missed.

Hear Christine Tacon live at the PPMA Show 2014 seminar programme, 11am, Tuesday 30 September 2014, NEC, Birmingham. | www.ppmashow.com

You Never have to be Alone New Lone Worker System from Castle

Castle Group Ltd has launched a brand new system for Lone worker protection. The Loner SMD has been developed specifically to address the ever increasing threat faced by people who work alone or unsupervised. This new product brings new features and connectivity, such that no one need ever be truly alone at work again! Simon Bull, MD of Castle Group said, “We are really proud to be introducing this new product to the market and I believe it will really make a difference to those lone workers who face increased risks just by the fact they are working on their own. This system can almost guarantee alerts even when you can’t get a signal on your mobile phone!” The key product in the range is the Loner SMD, which is a personally worn device that contains various personal protection features including a silent or audible panic alarm, a fall detector and a motion detector for man-down alerts. The system will also alert when its user logs on or off the system, all which can be tracked on a simple internet portal.

For more information please contact: Will Vernon on 01723 584250 or www.castlegroup.co.uk will.vernon@castlegroup.co.uk

In the event of an alert, the user can be pin-pointed via a map-based window on the web portal, which will also give details of the user and of the nature of the alert. This allows appropriate action to be taken to address any possible dangers faced by the employee. Operating over multiple mobile phone networks and with a high-power aerial, this product can send alerts even in areas of very poor mobile phone signal – much in the same way you can always call 999! Combined with high precision GPS, the loner SMD can optionally be used as a tracking device if this is of benefit to the organisation.

Hydrostatic Level Measurement There are many types of level measurement technology. For hydrographic surveys, water table and borehole measurement, hydrostatic pressure measurement is one of the most reliable. Hydrostatic pressure is described as being the pressure exerted by a fluid at equilibrium to a given point within the fluid, due to the force of gravity. A liquid column above the pressure sensor creates hydrostatic pressure, which is a direct indicator of the liquid level. In Europe the standard unit of measurement is metres of water gauge (mWG), also referred to as metres of water column (mWC), or metres

26|

of H2O (mH2O). ESI Technology design and manufacture a range of pressure transmitters for hydrostatic level applications. They are available in a range of diameters and can be calibrated to any unit of measurement. It is also necessary to use a special vented cable so that barometric pressure does not aect the true hydrostatic pressure measurement. Also, a desiccant housing at surface level is required to prevent moisture ingress over time. Stilling tubes and weighted nose cones are also available. ESI Technology can quote for individual sensors or complete systems to include cable, housing, display and other accessories.

TR-Electronic Presents SIL3-/

Functional safety must be taken into account in the design of drive functions in machines and systems (SIL2/SIL3 and PLd/PLe). Drive controllers with an integrated safety function can fulfil this task reliably as long as the position feedback of the drive is adequate. However, specific processes or risk assessments can require that the real position is not measured at the drive, but at another point in the system . Absolute rotary encoders CDH75 and CDV75 from TRElectronic with hollow or solid shaft can be integrated at almost any point of the power train. They measure position and speed with diverse redundancy and are certified for SIL3/PLe applications. The measured values are evaluated directly in the device and transmitted via PROFIBUS/ PROFIsafe or PROFINET/PROFIsafe. Safe position and speed values are therefore available throughout the control chain. Separate safety modules are needless. If the CD_75 absolute rotary encoder is used directly in the drive, square wave or sine/cosine signals are available as controller feedback signals. The high transmission speed of PROFINET allows position control can also be implemented without compromising on speed. Position and speed information is available in the secure bus protocol for safety tasks. As the same information is also transmitted in the unsecured protocol part and the safety checks are omitted, the values here are processed significantly faster - with positive eects on the control technology. An incremental signal fulfills local control tasks such as e.g. feedback to converters. The CD_75 safety encoder therefore enables safe position and speed feedback without additional components. Vaillant UK see a 20% increase in production and improved health and safety records with a KUKA robot solution Vaillant Group is one of the world’s leading heating technology manufacturers, employing over 10,000 people worldwide. For nearly 140 years,Vaillant has been setting the standards in the heating market, including pioneering the ‘combi’ boiler 35 years ago. As one of Europe’s leading heating technology manufacturers, ‘thinking ahead’ is a culture which is embraced throughout the business. And Vaillant UK, based in Belper, Derbyshire wanted an innovative way to meet increased levels of customer demand in the UK without increasing its labour costs. Solution By introducing automation to the assembly of Heat Engines and palletising of Vaillant Boilers,Vaillant UK realised improvements. A KUKA palletising robot solution would reduce the need for manual intervention in the manufacturing process and of the manufacturing track. For the Heat Engine Cell, the need to pick, place and secure rapidly was essential to Vaillant UK to keep up with the requirement of the track. The demand was a maximum cycle time of 45 seconds between assemblies. For the Palletising Cell,Vaillant UK had to manage the need to pick and gently

of products on a single pallet. The requirement was to process a minimum of 25 pallets every hour. With its powerful motors and high performance gear units, and the ability to stack multiple pallets up to great heights with ease, the KUKA KR180-2 Palletising solution was chosen for both installations to ensure shorter cycle times and greater productivity. Results By removing manual handling from both the front and back end of the manufacturing process,Vaillant were able to increase the production of its Heat Engines by more than 20% without the need for more staff.

Richard Sainsbury, Industrial Engineering Manager at Vaillant UK has been impressed with the results: “Looking holistically, the KUKA robots will have paid for themselves within 2.5 years.” Since implementation,Vaillant UK has operator fatigue with Health and Safety claims so far eliminated. “This is a huge step forward in terms of meeting our health and safety objectives.” continues Richard Sainsbury. Why KUKA? A strong recommendation from trusted integrators led to Vaillant UK choosing KUKA Robotics for this project. Since then, key personnel have undertaken KUKA training and KUKA robot solutions are now the standard choice for all future Vaillant UK projects.
