The economic contribution of the mining industry worldwide The International Council on Mining and Metals generated two reports highlighting the significant economic contribution of the mining industry to host countries around the world.

l primero de estos informes es la 6ª Edición del Índice de Contribución Minera (MCI), que sintetiza en un solo número y ranking asociado la importancia de la contribución económica que la minería hace a las economías nacionales a través de cuatro indicadores clave. Desde que el ICMM publicó el informe por primera vez en 2014, los datos han demostrado consistentemente que la minería sigue siendo el principal motor de actividad económica en muchos países de ingresos bajos y medios-bajos. Entre 2016 y 2019, muchos de los países más pobres del mundo dependían de los ingresos de la minería como principal fuente de actividad económica. Como resultado, 23 de los 25 principales países en esta edición se clasifican como dependientes de recursos. Casi dos tercios de estos países se categorizan como países de ingresos bajos o medios-bajos. El segundo informe es la Contribución Fiscal de los Miembros del ICMM. Este documento contiene el impuesto sobre la renta corporativa (CIT) y las regalías pagadas por los miembros del ICMM en el período contable de junio de 2013 a junio de 2021. he first of these reports is the 6th Edition of the Mining Contribution Index (MCI), which synthesizes a single issue and associated ranking of the importance of the economic contribution that mining makes to national economies across four key indicators. Since ICMM first published the report in 2014, data has consistently shown that mining remains the main driver of economic activity in many lowand lower-middle-income countries. Between 2016 and 2019, many of the world’s poorest countries relied on mining revenues as the primary source of economic activity. As a result, 23 of the top 25 countries in this edition are classified as resourcedependent. Nearly two-thirds of these countries are categorized as low- or lower-middle-income countries.
The second report is the Tax Contribution of ICMM Members. This document contains the corporate income tax (CIT) and royalties paid by ICMM members for the accounting period June 2013 to June 2021. CIT and royalties are important indicators of economic contribution, and transparent disclosure of this data helps civil society hold governments accountable for revenues paid. The report shows that ICMM members reported a total corporate income tax of $20.8 billion and a royalty charge of $9.4 billion. Excluding impairments and other exceptional items, the corporate income tax and royalty charge 2021 was 32.6% of adjusted profit before tax. Both reports help to understand the role of mining in national economies and highlight the importance of mining to some of the world’s poorest countries.
