1920 The Mark of Zorro, a silent film starring Douglas Fairbanks and Noah Beery, premieres.
936 The Bold Caballero, the first “talking” 1 Zorro movie, debuts.
1940 The Mark of Zorro, a film remake
directed by Rouben Mamoulian, stars Tyrone Power as Zorro, Linda Darnell as his love interest and Basil Rathbone as the villain.

film, McCulley wrote more than 60 additional Zorro stories. The last one was published posthumously.

1998 The Mask of Zorro, another film based on
McCulley’s character, is directed by Martin Campbell and stars Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins. In it, the original Zorro (Hopkins) escapes from prison to find his long-lost daughter (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and avenge the death of his wife against a corrupt governor. He is aided by his successor (Banderas), who pursues his own vendetta.
2005 Zorro, a novel by Chilean author Isabel Allende, is The Quest of Zorro
written as a biography and represents the first origin story ever undertaken for the character.
2005 The Legend of Zorro, a sequel to The Mask of Zorro, is again directed by Martin Campbell. Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones reprise their roles as the title hero and his spouse, and Rufus Sewell stars as the villain, Count Armand.
2 010 & beyond Zorro, a musical with music by the Gipsy Kings and John Cameron, book by Stephen Clark and Helen Edmundson, and lyrics by Stephen Clark, is born. The original musical does a successful trial-run tour, and then transfers to London’s West End (with minor changes, including the recasting of the Luisa and Ramon roles).
