J O V E N S D E AT E N A S «Jovens de Atenas» resulta da residência artística que Pauliana Valente Pimentel realizou em Atenas durante o mês de Abril de 2012 onde conheceu, acompanhou e conviveu com diversas pessoas na procura do retrato desses “jovens de atenas”, apresentado numa série de 18 fotografias e num vídeo, este último co-produzido com Sofia Riscado. Num momento tão particular da sua história e identidade, Pauliana Valente Pimentel interessou-se pelos paradoxos presentes neste ícone da história da sociedade ocidental, berço da Antiguidade na cultura, no pensamento, na filosofia. Subjacentes ao seu projecto e processo criativos estiveram questões como a identidade, a afirmação sexual e cultural, as perspectivas de futuro de uma classe média em declínio, a reflexão sobre o conceito democracia (“o poder do povo”) já nas assembleias da Grécia Antiga, a dinâmica artística que, desde sempre, tem marcado este país, o quotidiano cosmopolita da juventude de Atenas entre o medo e a incerteza, este último um sentimento que, provavelmente, marcará as primeiras décadas destes “tempos modernos”.

«Youth of Athens» is the result of the artistic residence that Pauliana Valente Pimentel made in Athens during April of 2012 where she met and communicated with several people, searching for the portraits of these “young of athens”, presented in a series of 18 photographs and a video, the latter co- produced with Sofia Riscado. In a very special and particular moment in their history and identity, Pauliana Valente Pimentel tried to grasp all paradoxes present in this History icon of the Western society, the birthplace of Antiquity: in culture, in thinking, in philosophy. Underlying her creative project and process were questions as identity; the sexual and cultural affirmation; the future prospects of a decaying middle class; the reflection about the concept of democracy (power of the people) since the assemblies in the Ancient Greece; the artistic dynamics which, since ever, has marked this country; the cosmopolitan everyday life of the youth of Athens between fear and uncertainty, the latter a feeling that will, probably, mark the first decades of these “modern times”.
