Investing in a world of hope for tomorrow Since 2002, EMI Canada, with the support of our ministry partners, has been developing people, designing structures, and constructing facilities that serve communities and the Church around the world. We’ve seen impact in the lives of individuals and communities as God has multiplied the efforts of our staff, volunteers, and supporters. In the pages that follow, you can trace the storyline of this impact through EMI Canada’s work, both past and present.

How do we propel dreams towards reality?

In Guatemala, endemic poverty has contributed to the vast number of orphans, with some estimates reaching into the hundreds of thousands.

Serving these abandoned children has become part of the vision of Impact Ministries, a charity dedicated to spreading the gospel by addressing the holistic needs of children and communities. Over the previous decade, Impact has established a network of schools, nutrition programs, and medical clinics. In 2014, they complemented these programs with a dream to develop a children’s home for abandoned babies.

To bring this dream to life, an EMI team visited Tactic, Guatemala in February of 2015. The team assessed the site and developed a comprehensive, three-phase master plan that included a baby house, family-style children’s homes, a common building with kitchen and dining spaces, and administration offices.

Les Peters, Impact Ministries’ Founder, reflected on the value of the long-term planning that EMI brought to the organization: “It was neat watching the EMI team synthesize all the thinking of the Guatemalan people”. He called the team’s presentation to Impact Ministries’ committee “remarkable” and “a birthing of [an] idea into something that was real”.

The first building - the baby house - was completed in the Spring of 2018.

How do we care for the caregivers?

It’s a far too common story. In regions hardest hit by civil unrest or disease, it’s often grandparents who are left to care for their grandchildren, with the “middle” generation missing. These seniors must survive in challenging conditions, often below the poverty line, with no one to care for them.

Reach One Touch One Ministries (ROTOM) serves older adults in Uganda, ensuring a life of dignity by meeting their spiritual, social, physical, and psychological needs. ROTOM offers a range of services including home visits, Christian fellowship and counselling, meal delivery, funerals, hygiene training, home repairs, and medical treatment.

Two EMI teams helped bring to life ROTOM’s vision of a Seniors Health Centre and Hospice. In 2007, a team conducted a site survey and delivered a master plan that included a medical clinic, administration space, and volunteer housing. These buildings were constructed and pressed into service, blessing the lives of at-risk seniors in the region.

A second EMI Team travelled to Uganda in 2016 to follow up on designs for an expansion to the Health Centre to provide space for in-patient care as well as crucial, more specialized facilities to fit the medical needs of Ugandan seniors.

How do we use our skills to meet the world’s greatest needs?

In a world full of suffering, disaster, and heartache, how can we join with God in his work of restoring hope and wholeness? For Garrett Mills, a structural engineer, joining this work meant travelling with EMI to Bon Repos, Haiti in 2010 to share his professional expertise.

The El Shaddai Baptist Church in Bon Repos envisioned serving their poverty-stricken, earthquake-battered community out of a multi-purpose ministry centre; including a primary school, a health clinic, and a church doubling as a hurricane shelter. This facility would minister to the community in a holistic way, while keeping the Gospel foundational.

Garrett joined a multi-disciplinary EMI team that investigated site conditions, advised on infrastructure needs such as water supply, sanitation, and power distribution, and developed a phased site master plan. Garrett’s structural engineering expertise was crucial, ensuring that the proposed structures could withstand natural disasters. The design was used further as an example of best practice in the community as it rebuilt after the earthquake.

EMI project trip volunteers have donated countless hours of professional design services, directly impacting individuals and communities around the globe. It remains a great privilege to see men and women harnessing their vocations in service to others for the glory of God.

How do we invest in the next generation?

How does discipleship, an EMI core value, bear fruit in young design professionals seeking to glorify God and bless a world in need? The EMI internship program is designed to foster this reality, giving young people an avenue to explore God’s call on their lives by merging their education and their faith.

Interns are immersed in a multi-disciplinary design experience in a faith environment. They visit a developing country on a project trip, gain practical experience, and interact with professionals from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. Spiritual growth is foundational to all of this.

Wesley Tse, a civil engineer, interned at EMI Canada in 2007. As part of a team that designed an orphanage in Haiti, Wes worked alongside seasoned professionals and witnessed effective multi-disciplinary collaboration: “You were able to see a complete design project come together…I know that it helped prepare me as I later worked on much larger projects.” Interns like Wes also grow in their capacity to respond to God’s call to serve. Wes reflects, “Looking back, the commitment to serve that I witnessed at EMI has helped shape my career and vocational path.”

Since his EMI internship, Wes has worked in consulting and served on many disaster responses with EMI and other Christian organizations.

PLANNED GIVING Charitable Bequest A charitable bequest is a gift to the EMI Canada Endowment Fund made in your will. A bequest can take the form of cash, securities, or assets. You can designate a specific amount or a portion of your estate. Bequests made to charity can decrease the taxes due through your estate.

Life Insurance You can designate the EMI Canada Endowment Fund as the owner or irrevocable beneficiary of your life insurance policy. This option allows you to make a major donation at a limited cost.

RRSP / RRIF / TFSA You can support the EMI Canada Endownment Fund by naming it as the beneficiary of your RRSP, RRIF, or TFSA during your lifetime or in your will.

FREQUENTLY ASKED How will contributions to the Endowment Fund benefit EMI Canada?

Each financial year, the Vancouver Foundation provides EMI Canada a 4% disbursement from the interest earned by the EMI Canada Endowment Fund. These funds enable EMI to be excellent in leading volunteers to deliver design services, mentoring interns, and integrating design professionals from all nations in its work.

Does this replace my regular contribution to EMI or EMI’s staff?

The EMI Canada Endowment Fund broadens opportunities to partner with EMI; it is a sustaining endowment to enable EMI’s international service in the long term. EMI’s faith-supported staff continue to rely on regular designated donations for their salaries while regular giving to EMI continues to support our immediate, ongoing work.

I don’t have a lot of money to give. Is there a minimum amount required when I give to the Endowment Fund?

There is no minimum required amount. In fact, all donations large or small will sustain EMI into the future, eventually surpassing the initial donation amount given.
