JERICHO Graduation project

Jericho is a unique city, due to its history, culture, geographical location and landscape. a uniqueness that cannot be replicated anywhere else, the important archaeological sites but also the oasis, the wadis the landscape of the mountain, the desert, the skyline made of small buildings topped by palm trees, the quite pace of daily life. This uniqueness is distorted by the lack of a solid and convincing strategy. Jericho has not has a Master plan since 1957.

INTRODUCTION

Jericho has rightfully craved its name in history. As the most ancient city in the world, Jericho narrates the undisputed story of 10,000 years of human life. The city has been bestowed with good fortune to sustain human life for the longest period; characterized by a warm semi-tropical climate, the city teems with life, utilizing its abundant natural resources: water springs, fertile earth, and hospitable people.

In the project, the city went through different layers, and lenses. Each time observing different elements and aspects. Many questions arises with the fact that there are several visions towards Jericho, many visions that are not suitable for the region. So the question is How a Palestinian hybrid city such as Jericho enhance its touristic real estate value and still give the locals ownership over these capitalistic agents whilst maintaining its ancient title as a desert oasis.

Jericho is an important part of the Palestinian scene. As it serves as a leisure city for Palestinians from other cities. This aspect has led for it to be controlled by capitalistic agents that control how the city could develop. The future vision for Jericho as suburbia for outer citizens. Resulting in a congested but dead place of second homes for winter vacations.

DISTINGUISHING ELEMENTS The city of Jericho lies in the great Jordan rift calley - some 250m below sea level -in a large and almost flat area few kilometers north of the dead sea. The municipal of Jericho is the largest in Palestine, accounting for around 57 sq Km. the distinguishing elements of that area, is the Oasis, The desert, The Wadis, Jordan River, The mountains, The agriculture Land. Two main wadis cross the city area: Wadi Qelt in the south and wadi N'wemeh in the north . for the most of the year their river beds are dry, but large flows occur in wintertime due to storm water. The Palestinian heritage site of Telul Abu Alayeq is located along the river banks of Wadi Qilt, 3 kms southwest of Jericho. It is identified with the garden city of Jericho during the Greco-Roman period which was described by the historians during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, The garden city also contains a network of water channels and aqueducts which were constructed to exploit the water from the surrounding springs of Ain Es-Sultan, Nueima, Ed-Deyuk, and Wadi Qilt. This fact has always attracted people to Jericho throughout the years and until now.

They are mainly private owners who extract water primarily for their own consumption.

According to the local farmers union, the production of vegetables (tomatoes,cucumbers,aubergines, peppers and salads) and fruits( bananas, grapes, oranges and mandarins). typical of this region, has shown diminishing trend last year due to declining supply of water and to problems of salinity and soil. On the other hand the production of dates, localized mostly in the southern side of the city and district of Jericho is gaining importance. It is a high quality product and a very outward market-oriented one.

WHY THERE? Wadi qelt is one of the most important environmental systems in the city of Jericho, the one that can be considered the generator of the oasis landscape, connecting and linking the natural environment of the oasis with most of the archaeological sites. The wadi itself suffers nowadays from abandonment and pollution. The area of the city center along the wadi are characterized by low environmental quality uses incompatible with the character of the are, such as large wasteland or underused spaces. Theres a chance to redefine the segment and from there to revive the rest of the city.
