NB The preposition entlang is used with the accusative or dative case depending on its function, and it often comes after the noun. For details see the end of section 5.3. NB With certain prepositions, the definite article is often contracted, e.g. ins in das; zum zu dem (see 3.1).

5.1 Prepositions with the accusative Bis Bis is never followed by a determiner. Except with names, adverbs and a few time words, it has another preposition with it (most often zu).
referring to place ‘as far as’, ‘(up) to’: Ich fahre nur bis Marbach. Wir gingen bis zum Fluss. Der Weg führt bis ins Tal.
I’m only going as far as Marbach. We went as far as the river. The path leads right down to the valley.
NB The last preposition governs the case of the following noun phrase, e.g. bis zu dative.
referring to time ‘by’, ‘until’: Bis 1945/bis zu seinem Tod lebte er in Wien. Ich habe es bis heute Abend fertig.
Until 1945/until his death he lived in Vienna. I’ll have finished it by tonight.
