A large number of adjectives appear with a noun in the dative. Some common ones are: ähnlich angenehm bekannt bewusst dankbar
similar agreeable familiar known grateful
fremd gefährlich klar möglich nützlich
strange dangerous clear possible useful
peinlich treu überlegen verständlich willkommen
Some adjectives expressing sensations are used with the
DATIVE
embarrassing loyal superior comprehensible welcome
in constructions with the
verb sein. This is how you say things in German like I am warm, I am cold, etc.: Mir ist kalt./Es ist mir kalt. Mir ist zu warm./Es ist mir zu warm. Mir ist schlecht. Mir ist schwindlig.
I’m cold. I’m too warm. I feel sick. I’m dizzy.
4.5 Adjectives with prepositions Many adjectives can be linked to a noun by using a PREPOSITION: Das ist von dem Wetter abhängig. Sie war mit meinem Entschluss einverstanden. Das Land ist reich an Bodenschätzen.
That is dependent on the weather. She was in agreement with my decision. The country is rich in natural resources.
The preposition used with a particular adjective often differs from that in the equivalent English construction.
