Editorial

EMBRACING DIVERSITY Diversity is the theme of this issue of CONNECTIONS.When I arrived at ELTHAM in 2000 its people diversity was very limited. I even had one graduate talk to me about the difficulties he had as a student because of his Jewish background.

The Nillumbik Shire, then and now, is not a particularly diverse community in terms of background. It tends to be predominantly European. Most of our young people are growing up in this community and hence, their life experiences of other cultures will be more limited than most other young people in Melbourne!

Only 7% of people in Nillumbik Shire come from countries where English is not the first language. Country of Birth data identifies where people were born and is indicative of the level of cultural diversity in Nillumbik Shire. In Greater Melbourne, 24.2% came from countries where English was not the first language. In the past six years the growth of our Shires Chinese population was 50 persons, which represents 0.2% of our overall population.

Since early 2000, ELTHAM has emphasised the importance to our local students of relationships with Asia, particularly China. The decision of the College Board to increase our ties and collaboration with China and Asia was very much about providing experience in diversity for ELTHAM students. Growing, particularly through schooling, with personal relationships and an understanding of other cultures is integral to developing a global capacity.

I believe our young people have developed, and continue to develop, a greater awareness of Asia and greater skill in being able to work with all people in our global community.

This, however, is the Asia Century, with particular reference to China. Our young people will need the attitudes, dispositions and skills to live, work and learn in this complex and increasingly global community. The Australian Government’s Australia in the Asian Century White Paper, released in October this year, is very timely, but as with many aspects of 21st century education, ELTHAM has been leading the way. Acknowledgement in both our curriculum and culture of Asia’s importance to the lives of young people is a demonstration of our strong belief in preparing young people for their future not our past.

Being part of a school concert at ELTHAM College is not just about rehearsing lines from a standard play and dressing up.

Instead our Junior Years students were actively involved in creating an original narrative themselves and conceptualised “What goes bump in the night” through many hours of creative workshopping.

A purposeful Visual and Performing Arts program is life enhancing and invaluable in stimulating creative thinking and in promoting capability and adaptability. It emphasises the creative process and ensures that the student’s work is recognised as both unique and important.

expression is valued while ensuring that selfesteem is enhanced, spontaneity and risk-taking are encouraged, and difference is celebrated all in a caring and safe environment. It is this affirming aspect of the creative arts that makes participation such a positive experience, helping to promote thinking, imagination and sensitivity.

The Production “What goes bump in the night” is a wonderful example of an integrated learning experience. Our young people participated in a range of activities that encompassed the visual arts, music, drama, dance and literature. All these elements combined to provide a holistic and unique approach to the creation and delivery of this production. Undertaking a dramatic performance also helps develop communication skills as the children learn how to use their face, voice and body movements to convey a message to the audience. All these activities and experiences help students to make sense of the world; to question, to speculate and to find solutions; to deal with feelings and to respond to creative experience.

So much energy, time, creativity and learning went into this concert and we are so proud of the students’ achievement both overall and personally. All aspects of the production were outstanding as one parent exclaimed, “Everything from the script, the scenery, the choreography, the costumes the acting… the entire production was brilliant.”

Students benefit enormously from being involved as these experiences foster self-confidence, give them the opportunity to appear on stage and allow them to express themselves publicly.

MERGING WORLDS

The worlds of mathematics and English are often seen as completely different entities however if you look a bit deeper into literature you can see that analysing text using mathematical concepts can reveal interesting results.

With this in mind our Year 7 Middle Years students have been studying two pieces of literature designed for different audiences; one children’s book and one novel for older people. This Maths in Action (MIA) task was to take a sample of 100 words from the text and then record the length of each word and the number of syllables in each word. With this information students were then challenged to determine the mean, mode, median and range for these characteristics.

Students were also given some choice to extend

their analysis. For example some opted to determine the number of adjectives or adverbs in their sample.

Using the data they collected students made general observations about the similarities and differences between the texts. Based on their findings students were then asked to write and illustrate a children’s book that was designed to engage the specific audience. For this the students kept in mind their discoveries that a children’s book contains less verbs, less

adjectives and less words overall. While we may innately recognise that the construction and complexity of certain texts for certain audiences are quite different, our Year 7 students have been able to prove this statistically.

The teacher’s overseeing the activity were very impressed with the quality of statistical analysis and blown away by the high standard and creativity of many of the stories created.

GEOGRAPHY AND THE FUTURE The world needs leaders in creating sustainable cities for our future. With this in mind students undertaking Geography studies this year had the fantastic opportunity to delve deep into the issues affecting Melbourne’s urban environment through their entries in the Urban Futures Competition.

Organised by the Department of Environment, Planning and Sustainability at RMIT, students from Years 10-12 across Victoria were invited to take a photograph illustrating an urban problem, outline the issue and then suggest solutions to this issue. Four dedicated ELTHAM College students were amongst the twenty shortlisted entries from across the state. Congratulations to Nina Gormley, Nicholas Huntington, Simon

Through this activity students gained a greater understanding about urban consolidation, transportation limitations and the impact on grazing and farming land from an abundance of subdivisions.

AD-BUSTING COLLABORATION In Year 9, short courses are designed to complement the core curriculum. They deliver a variety of learning experiences in an engaging and challenging format, which celebrate our students’ diverse interests and encourage them on the road to becoming 21st century, life- long learners.

In April, after a week of communicating with each other via Studywiz, a class of Year 11 Media students came to the City Campus to mentor and work alongside Year 9s. Over the course of a day Year 11s worked with Year 9 students to parody popular advertising campaigns. By pulling apart the different elements of the various campaigns students learn to analyse and question the messages they are receiving. Thanks to the instruction of VCE Media Teacher Andy Hyde, the Year 11s arrived with props, costumes and high-end digital cameras in order to create their

advertisements. Under the guidance of Andy and Year 9 teacher, Joseph Sassone, the Year 11s taught Year 9s how to use the cameras so they could create their own print advertisements.

The centrepiece of the day was a stop-motion animation directed by Year 11’s Taylor McClintock that every Year 9 ‘Ad-Busting’ and Year 11 Media student participated in. The animation used hundreds of post-it notes and a human puppet – David Brogno from Year 9 – and took an entire day to complete. This was a wonderful opportunity for an educational task to be translated into an authentic and engaging experience.

PERSUADING THE PEOPLE To some the art of persuasion comes naturally and for others it is a craft that is developed over many years. For the 20 students that participate in the ELTHAM College debating club persuasion and influencing techniques are simply part of their repertoire.

Debating employs many attributes and requires participants to think critically, communicate effectively, research independently and work as part of a collaborative team. These skills are not only worthwhile to develop from a schooling perspective but are also highly desirable traits in any workplace. From a social viewpoint debating also encourages tolerance and a desire to see every perspective from a different angle. There are also rules that must be agreed upon and adhered to by all participants and while debaters challenge ideas they never make the argument personal in nature.

A debate is judged on the quality of the arguments that are presented, the strength of the rhetoric, the charisma of the speaker, the quality of the humor, the ability to think on one’s feet and, of course, the teamwork.

The students at ELTHAM participate in the Interschool debating competition organised by the Debaters Association of Victoria. They debate against other schools in grades that range in terms of age level, experience and difficulty.

Students from Middle Years debate socially relevant topics such as whether beauty pageants should be permitted, while senior students debate on political, economic and environmental concerns.

There are many ways to hone your debating skills from traditional research and reasoned construction conducted in a classroom to online social networking sites that allow members to debate topics of rich and varied content from across the world. The value of the debating process is undeniable as it is the ultimate embodiment of intelligent, challenging and yet peaceful discussion.

I left ELTHAM College at Year 11. I enjoyed my time at ELTHAM, but probably didn’t make the most of the opportunities I had. It took until later in life to better understand the influence my years at ELTHAM had on me. When I was at the College it was a very different school than it is today. Competitive sport was virtually nonexistent, as it was all about competing against yourself, in things like orienteering. That was the first lesson I learnt; life is competitive, but competing against yourself IS all you need to do. Be as good as you can be and forget about comparing yourself to others.

I struggled with maths and chemistry, and whilst I loved the humanities area, I knew passing Year 12 would be hard. A friend’s father was a dental technician, and after seeing that his Dad bought him a new motorbike I thought there must be money in this game so I applied for a job. Second lesson learned; NEVER choose a career for money. I hated being a dental technician. As soon as I qualified, I quit and got a job as a sales rep, where I hardly worked, got a company car and heaps of time and money to go skiing. That’s when I decided I’d find a job doing something I enjoyed, I’d become a ski instructor. Third lesson learned; enjoyment doesn’t always translate to the “right job” for you.

From there, strangely, I went into fashion, where I actually learnt what I liked to do. I was an agent, which means I sold fashion to retailers. I loved to sell. I loved the process of creating relationships.

I loved closing a sale, although I did find fashion itself a bit boring. Then BHP called me and offered me a job building their diamond brand.

It was there that I learned my fourth lesson; stay at school and get a degree! It was the first time I worked with people who had degrees and were highly educated. Gosh they were smart! I moved into the internal video division of BHP and discovered how exciting video production was and how much I loved it. It was the first time I had found a job I truly loved.

The division was eventually wound up so I asked the key staff from the team to come and work for me, and I started 50 Kaliber. We’ve grown into a company with offices in Melbourne, Singapore and Perth. We work with some of the largest companies in the world, supplying the highest quality film and communication outcomes.

I am very lucky. I am involved in a job that never feels like a job and I work with amazing people. I get to sell, but I sell things I truly believe in. And the biggest lesson I’ve learned through it all, the one that helps me make the most every day, is very simple; just be true to yourself - working out what that is can be the hard part.

After finishing school I did a science degree at Melbourne Uni, and then moved to Canberra in 1987 to do a PhD in plant cell biology at the Australian National University (ANU). Three weeks after submitting that, I had the first of my two kids, Alice (now 21) followed by Max (almost 19). I have worked in research and then science education and am now a science editor and writer.

Working freelance for the past 7 years keeps my work varied and entertaining. My topics are often in agriculture (I know a lot about rodents, lobsters and forest products, for instance) and health and welfare, but I never know what I’ll be offered— including field guides, theatre scripts and even a report on cement!

In the meantime, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) back in 1995, which was scary, but so far I’ve been incredibly lucky and am only mildly affected. I’ve tried to use my MS for good rather than evil by volunteering with the MS Society, especially in ways where my understanding of MS is a ‘plus’ such as peer support, advocacy and being on the advisory board, as well as assisting with the usual events and mail outs. In a surprising turn of events, in May I was humbled to be named 2012 ACT Volunteer of the Year for my Community Service.

CLASS OF ‘92 20 YEAR REUNION Can it really be 20 years since we were last at ELTHAM? The class of ‘92 recently gathered to celebrate our 20 year reunion.

As I checked out our year group, it seemed that the years have been kind to us; we are still a very good looking bunch of students! After the initial nervous hang by the entrance to see who is here, and the curious glances of ‘I think I recognise that face’, relief came with the very handy name tags which led to lots of hugs and kisses as well as ‘you haven’t changed a bit’ comments.

CLASS OF ‘97 15 YEAR REUNION A

It was with a bit of excitement that I made my way to the Geebung for the Class of 1997s 15 year reunion in September. For me it felt like my life had changed dramatically in the five intervening years since the last reunion and I was interested to hear how the other people in my year were travelling on their own journeys.

While Facebook has provided a window to peek into my classmate’s lives, it doesn’t replace a social catch-up and conversation. I went to school with a great group of people, and their company was the reason that our 15 year reunion was such an enjoyable event. Everyone mingled and caught up; the conversation flowed easily, as did the food and drinks. It was inspiring to hear from my peers about their lives and was fantastic to catch up with some people I hadn’t seen in almost half a life-time.

The displays of photos from our time at ELTHAM College made great talking points and the messages from Berlin-based College Captain Kristen Harrison and our reflection on absent friends rounded off the formal part of the night.

Not wanting to wrap up the evening too early, on closing time a large group made the trek to a (not-so) nearby pub to continue the festivities until the wee hours. I’m hoping that the next five years are as rewarding for the class of 1997 as the preceding five, and I’ll be watching/stalking those of you on Facebook to see how you’re travelling.

CLASS OF ‘82 30 YEAR REUNION The commentary and nervous energy picked up as we entered Eltham, I was the designated driver for the night and had picked up various friends on the journey to Research, close friends that I had made at ELTHAM College and had kept over the years.

One of my passengers, Rick Blackburn, had flown down from Sydney for the night and had grown up in Kangaroo Ground. In fact, we used to go rabbit shooting on land bordering the College, something that would now result in a lock down of the school I’m sure. Innocence lost??

On entering Swipers Gully Restaurant, one of the first faces I saw was “Ned” the school librarian.

What an amazing women! 80 years old yet still greeted me (by name) and then proceeded to ask me (by name) how my two sisters who had also attended ELTHAM College were doing … extraordinary.

Memories came flooding back as conversation flowed easily. As the night progressed, stories of success abounded, a professional writer, a music industry executive, human resources’ entrepreneur and an architect to name a few.

A happy vibe prevailed, no doubt helped by the wonderful hospitality provided by the staff and students at Swipers Gully and the remarkable Ann Plush. Well done on a great night and bring on the next one!

GIRLS GETTING RUNS ON THE BOARD

TURTLES STEP UP IN 2013

The 2012/13 Cricket season finds four girls playing in Research Eltham Collegians Cricket Club’s (RECCC) youngest team. This is a wonderful achievement for the Club and highlights efforts to create an environment that encourages female participation in the sport. The number of women cricketers in Australia is on the rise, and with the success of the Australian Women’s Cricketing team will hopefully encourage more girls to play the game.

The Club’s longstanding program for beginners aged 5-8, called Milo in2Cricket, is open to boys and girls. Private Coaching at affordable rates for juniors has helped to encourage children in our community to develop their cricketing skills and begin a lifelong enjoyment of cricket with RECCC. With a strong junior coaching team and fabulous parent group, the junior program is flourishing.

The Club fields teams in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association from ages 8 to 18, as well as Senior teams and Vets. New players from the local community are always welcome.

Season 2012 was an exciting year for the Eltham Collegians Football Club. The Senior Turtles finished 2nd on the VAFA Division 2 ladder and the Reserves just narrowly missed out on the finals after wining 9 out of the last 10 games. This is the highest level the club has achieved in its 26 year history! While the Seniors just missed out on a grand final appearance, the scene is set for both teams to go one step further in the 2013 season.

The Turtles are extremely optimistic about their chances of success in 2013, as the current playing list comprises a combination of both youth and experience.

The Club’s Milo in2Cricket program can be seen on the green grasses of the ELTHAM College Main Oval beginning 11th November from 1011:30am and of course GIRLS ARE WELCOME! Pre-season will commence at the Main College Oval in Mid November and Season 2013 is scheduled to start on April 13th. The Turtles are always looking for more Ex Collegians to join their growing ranks and all new players are welcome.

BEETROOT CURED SALMON

WITH BEETROOT RÖSTI AND CAPER BERRY DRESSING This beetroot-cured salmon makes an elegant starter that’s sure to impress. Simply prepare the marinade and let it cure overnight in the fridge.

INGREDIENTS Rösti 4 large désirée potatoes (400g), scrubbed, not peeled 2 beetroot, peeled and coarsely grated 1 cloves garlic, crushed salt and freshly ground black pepper 5 tbsp olive oil Beetroot-cured salmon 500-700g/side salmon, fat trimmed 500g sea salt 250g caster sugar 1 beetroot (250g), peeled and coarsely grated 1 tsp coriander seeds 1 small bunch coriander 1 tsp of Schwann pepper 1 tsp of pink peppercorns Dressing 50ml olive oil 1/2 garlic clove, finely chopped 2 tbsp caper berries, drained, rinsed 1 ripe tomato, seeds removed, chopped salt and freshly ground black pepper ½ lemon, juice only handful fresh parsley, chopped Horseradish Cream Horseradish cream can be purchased from supermarkets or made using horseradish, crème fraiche, lemon juice, salt and pepper.

Garnish 1 bunch of pea cress and thinly sliced cucumber

Cured Salmon Place coriander seeds, both peppercorn varieties, coriander leaves with stalks, salt and sugar in a food processor and blend together to make a purée. Add the gated beetroot and blitz for a further 30 seconds. Lay the salmon skin side down on a large tray and spread the cure over the top and sides, ensuring the salmon is evenly covered.

Cover with cling film and then place in the fridge for about 10-12 hours. Turn the salmon over, cover with cling film again and continue to cure for another 10 hours. Wash off the cure and pat the salmon dry with kitchen paper - at this stage the salmon is ready to eat. Wrap the fish in cling film and keep in the fridge until ready to serve.

Rösti Place the potatoes into a saucepan of boiling salted water and boil for seven minutes, then drain and leave to cool. When the potatoes are cool enough to handle, peel them and grate them into a bowl. Add the grated beetroot and garlic, season, to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper, and mix together well. Divide and shape the potato mixture into six flat patties, place onto a baking sheet and transfer to the fridge to chill for one hour. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the potato Röstis and fry for 4-6 minutes on each side, or until goldenbrown all over, then drain on kitchen paper.

Dressing For the dressing, heat the oil in a pan, add the garlic, capers and chopped tomato and gently warm through. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir in the lemon juice and parsley. Remove from the heat, set aside and keep warm To serve Discard the salmon skin and then slice the salmon thinly. Place one beetroot Rösti in the centre of a plate. Pipe some horseradish cream on to the middle of the beetroot Rösti. Place 3-5 slices of salmon on each Rösti. Wrap cucumber ribbons around pea cress and place on top of salmon.

Spoon caper berry dressing around the edges of the plate. Enjoy!

An eclectic mix of Olympic nations participated in a night of fun and entertainment at the Trivia Night held in August. The ECCA organised event provided families, friends and staff with fun and games, silent auctions and the ultimate chance to pit their wits against each other in several rounds of trivia. Teams took pleasure in customising their food and table decorations to follow the theme of their country: from the pizza eating ‘Marios’ with an Italian flag coloured table, to the French Champagne and provincial food of the sophisticated Parisians. The impressive presence of the two tables from Greece (North and South) ultimately secured them the prize of ‘Best Country Themed Table’. Luck was on the side of the Greek table, also winning the major raffle draw – congratulations to the Zouzounis family who won the prize of Term 4 2012 Tuition Fees for their daughter in Year 8. There were some tense moments with such close competition, yet it was the Australian team who ended the evening victorious.

ECCA and Class Convenors held a Pink Ribbon Morning Tea at Swipers Gully Restaurant in October.

This is the fifth year this event has been organised by Cathy Coath, Heather Tender and Sandra Hayes to help the Cancer Council fund research, prevention and support programs. With the generous donations received from local businesses and individuals, there were fantastic silent auction items and raffle prizes on offer. The event was a great success with 80 guests raising $2,568. This amount brings the total money raised so far to $8,212. All of this could not have been achieved without the Hospitality Centre staff and students who provided delicious pink themed morning tea treats.

Thank you to everyone who supported the event for playing your part in the fight against Breast Cancer.

ECCA’S NEW DIRECTION A strategic review of the structure and objective of the College parent association ECCA was held in May. Attendees at the workshop included current and past parents, committee and College staff, who defined the focus, purpose and future direction of ECCA. A new and expanded committee structure was developed, incorporating the Early & Junior Years Association (EJYA), which had previously operated as a separate entity. Specific roles and section representatives were identified to utilise the skills of committee members and provide opportunities for personal development. The process is now underway for ECCA to implement the new structure and fill all available roles.

The Victorian Schools Championships were held in September on the Yarra River at Warrandyte, comprising a downriver race and a series of slalom races. The ELTHAM College Canoe Club entered a team of eight paddlers. Some were current paddlers, some ex-members: all were keen to test out their skills and represent the College.

Each year ELTHAM has an extremely exciting Snow Program on offer. The annual camp is fantastic, with a total of 50 students, teachers and parents experiencing a week on the slopes.

Students (and parents) have a private lesson each day to ensure they are improving their technique in both skiing and snowboarding, with plenty of free time to explore and enjoy the many slopes at Mt. Hotham. The team building and peer mentoring that occurs across students of varying year levels is the real strength of this camp, not to mention the social atmosphere the lodge creates for parents, teachers and students alike!

Late in Term 3 over 100 people were in attendance at Montsalvat to enjoy the fine sounds of ELTHAM’s three Jazz ensembles – Backbeat, Sidewinder and Frontline.

The team came away with a multitude of medals and the trophy for the Best Small School (team of less than 10 paddlers), which they won for the third year in a row! More importantly, everyone had great fun and a very pleasant weekend in the sun by the river.

All members of the ELTHAM College community are welcome to join us for a paddle, and maybe join the team for next year!

ELTHAM also had a small team represent the College at the annual Victorian Interschool Championships at Mt. Buller, and they did us proud. We look forward to building on the Interschool team to compete at the new Victorian Interschool Championships venue of Falls Creek, and yet another fantastic Snowcamp in 2013.

Backbeat features beginner Jazz musicians who focus more on improvisation, Sidewinder features musicians who have performed some Jazz before and are keen to expand their knowledge, and Frontline features senior musicians who have reached a very high standard of instrumental performance.

This is one of the many music events held throughout the year and is proving to be a very popular show. Parents come along to watch our wonderful young musicians perform whilst partaking in a delicious supper provided by Friends of Music. Congratulations to James Bradley, Sam Parry and the Music Department on their outstanding work with these ensembles.

When Peter Duffell, Rob Wagner and Greg King began working at ELTHAM College Malcolm Fraser was our Prime Minister and the Pac Man video game had just been released. A new technology phenomenon was occurring as the Personal Computer was introduced by IBM. Peter’s first impression of the College was of a very new school buried behind the trees on a hill beyond Research, while Greg was struck by the vibrancy and excitement of being a part of the building (literally and figuratively) of a unique independent co-educational school. Rob’s first experience of ELTHAM came when he was doing his student-teacher placement in his final year of university. Rob discovered a school that recycled long before recycling was fashionable, had its own observatory and recognised the importance of staff networking and collaboration.

In 1993 Australia was being led by Paul Keating, The Piano won three Oscars at the Academy Awards and Cathy Rostolis became a full time staff member of the College. Cathy happily reflects that her immediate impression of the College, one that still holds true today, was of a school that nurtures an individual’s soul.

Her greatest career highlight was being an instrumental part of creating and developing the HiSTORY Centre, a program that has changed the way people now approach inquiry based learning.

Peters career highlights centre around the sheer diversity of the opportunities offered by ELTHAM College, where he has taught everything from Numeracy, Learning Needs, Literacy and Outdoor Education, while Greg has equally appreciated the wealth of experiences he’s been given over the years working with four Principals. Each one provided him the chance to grow as a teacher, educator, administrator and leader.

Seeing students using music as the vehicle for self expression has been richly rewarding for Rob. Proud memories of the 1996 England Concert band tour are especially significant – 45 wonderful musicians performing challenging music to an exceptionally high standard, representing both the College and Australia on the international stage.

There are many people who have made valuable contributions to the College over many years. The reflections of Peter, Rob, Greg and Cathy hopefully capture the essence of people’s emotions over this period. All four of these dedicated educators believe that their greatest highlight has been having the opportunity to work with so many remarkable students and staff. So to the staff members who are leaving us we offer our heartfelt thanks and wish you much happiness as you embark on new and exciting adventures.
