ustainable gardening is a way to give back to the Earth. At the same time, nurturing a sustainable garden encourages us to get back in touch with nature and tune in with our environment. As garden professionals, we should all be committed to keeping our impact on the planet to a minimum. We need to think hard about how we positively and negatively impact the spaces we encounter. We are all aware of how best to create an eco-conscious space, moving away from the current linear economy, which follows a take-make-use-dispose principle, towards a circular economy (CE). We should all strive for a ‘positive footprint’ concerning energy, water, topsoil, and material use, designing out waste, and using the circular economy to build sustainability in our landscape architecture.

Bamboo is a versatile and replenishable material for creating simple yet dramatic spaces, such as a pavilion, a garden office, or a folly. Plus, once the building reaches the end of its lifespan, it can be
composted and turned into soil. Ensure you’re doing your due diligence and asking your builder to provide you with safe and eco-friendly options. If you must ship goods, ensure all parties undertake best practices: • Make sure the company you are shopping from offers a ‘green’ shipping option • They use less packaging materials • Use biodegradable packaging materials • Use recycled shipping materials Interestingly, in her manifesto for Dezeen 15 festival, artist and designer Es Devlin proposed architects and designers sign an ethical code of practice promising not to do any harm to the planet in their practice. A surprising and rather lovely new initiative is the world’s first animal gardening service; if your lawn needs a trim, you can now hire ex-dairy cows to maintain your garden by doing what they love to do – eating grass. Real Deal Milk launched the service to help keep ex-dairy cows from
