The policy plan that Bill Gates (Arizona) put into place and Councilwoman Debra Stark continues to assist us with implementing was a 10 year plan, so this change was never intended to happen overnight yet we are working diligently to make it happen as quickly as we are able. To strategically and effectively implement this plan, we had to focus first on where there was already momentum (32nd and Shea, hello 32 Shea) to prove to businesses that we are the place to be. AFTER-SCHOOL SWIM LESSONS KEEP FITNESS FUN
AT HUBBARD FAMILY SWIM SCHOOLS NOW THAT THE SCHOOL YEAR IS UNDERWAY, A GROWING NUMBER OF PARENTS ARE ENROLLING THEIR CHILDREN IN FUN-FILLED, AFTER-SCHOOL SWIM LESSONS AT THE HUBBARD FAMILY SWIM SCHOOLS. The summer swimming pool season might be drawing to a close, but learning how to swim, developing a love for the water, and learning crucial lessons about water safety continues indoors all year long at the Hubbard Family Swim Schools. The temperature of the indoor pools at Hubbard remains at 90 degrees all year round. “The fall months are a great time to enroll children in year-round swim lessons,” says Bob Hubbard, co-owner of the Hubbard Family Swim Schools. “Not only is swimming excellent exercise for children after school and a great way for them to burn off energy, our basic philosophy is this: Children everywhere must learn how to swim. Learning to swim should not be a choice.” Children who learn how to swim are also demonstrating more advanced
cognitive and physical abilities than other children, according to worldleading research led by Griffith University in Australia. Their 2013 findings of a four-year study indicate that swimming children have an advantage when starting school. Swimming children scored significantly better than the normal population on a number of measures that are really important for their transition to school - their cognitive development, language development, and their physical development. The study surveyed 7,000 parents from Australia, New Zealand and the U.S., over three years, as well as individually assessing 180 children.
The study showed that children’s fine motor skills and overall coordination were more developed as a result of taking swim lessons and it showed that children who start lessons early were more socially and emotionally ready to start school. Hubbard Family Swim School offers lessons to children 8 weeks to 12 years of age. There are even FREE “baby splash” swim classes for babies
8 weeks to 5 months of age. Parent participation in the water is required. These fun-filled, 30-minute water acclimation classes give parents or caregivers a chance to learn excellent tips on how to enjoy tub time at home with baby and also learn how to prepare baby for swim lessons. There are several different baby splash class times offered throughout the week. Advanced registration is required. There is a $25 joining fee for the baby swim classes but there’s no charge for the weekly classes after joining.
“Our popular baby splash classes give parents an excellent way to spend quality time with their babies in the water,” adds Hubbard. “Their swim class together is wonderful bonding time and then after the class, the babies always enjoy a nice, long nap.” In business now for 20 years, Hubbard Family Swim Schools have three Valley locations - Phoenix, Peoria, and Mesa. ARIZONA HELPING HANDS TO OPEN THE DIANE & BRUCE HALLE FOUNDATION FOSTER CARE RESOURCE CENTER ARIZONA HELPING HANDS (“AHH”), THE STATE’S LARGEST PROVIDER OF BASIC NEEDS FOR ARIZONA’S 15,000+ CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE HAS SEEN METEORIC GROWTH IN THEIR SERVICES OVER THEIR 20 YEAR HISTORY. The latest big step forward is the planned opening of the Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation Foster Care Resource Center. The organization has acquired the former Arizona Sunrays Gymnastics Center located at 3110 E. Thunderbird Road in North Phoenix. This 18,000 square foot facility will be renovated and improved to provide a one-stop shop to meet the needs of boys and girls in foster care. This is a huge accomplishment for a home-grown charity. Dan Shufelt, President and CEO of AHH tells us that, “Arizona Helping Hands was founded in the living room of Paul and Kathy Donaldson in 1998. From our humble beginnings as a group of friends who volunteered their time to fill special needs for people in our community to today, when we are leading the charge to make lives better
for kids in foster care, this has been an amazing journey.” “Our new facility will allow us the opportunity to partner with other charities to provide multiple services to foster families. With thousands of children in foster care today, this new endeavor is another gigantic step forward”, Shufelt says. “The services we provide continue to expand, and this space will open the doors to serving more kids and increasing the reach of our important programs that bring hope and safety to children who have been victims of abuse and neglect. We are so grateful to the Diane & Bruce Halle Foundation for seeing the merit in this project and propelling us forward.” The Organization plans a major renovation of the site, building a welcome, friendly environment where families can feel safe and supported. The theme will be one utilized in AHH brochures of “The Care Barn.” It will expand upon the AHH reputation of being THE PLACE WITH THE STUFF for kids in foster care. 2,908 children received beds and cribs from
AHH in 2017 alone. Other programs including a holiday toy drive, a back to school drive, and a year-round program celebrating birthdays assisted more than 20,000 children last year. The gift from the Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation is the lead gift in a capital campaign to make this project a reality. AHH is hoping to raise a total of $3Million to purchase, renovate and improve the property. The construction team includes project
manager CRESA, architect CORGAN and general contractor JOKAKE CONSTRUCTION. Additional funding has been provided by the TW LEWIS Foundation and more partners are being sought to make this project a reality benefitting child in foster care throughout the State. 3 THINGS PRODUCTIVE ENTREPRENEURS DO AT THE END OF THEIR DAY By Cindy Gordon

oes the time pass by so quickly you never feel like you’ve accomplished enough? Do you always feel behind the eight-ball with too many deadlines looming and not enough time to get them done? Is your business growth stagnant because you don’t have time to get to the important tasks that will move it forward? By incorporating these three steps into your daily habits you will become more productive and see your business grow. SET YOUR TOP PRIORITY FOR TOMORROW What makes a person productive is focus. It’s very easy to get caught in the weeds of your business and forget about the important tasks that will make the biggest difference to your business. Stepping back to look at all the things that need to be done and taking time
to ask yourself which the highest priorities are will enable you to start your day off working on the vital tasks, instead of allowing yourself to step into the tasks that are comfortable and easy. SCHEDULE TIME FOR EMAILS AND MESSAGES Like Pavlov’s dog, we have been trained to react to the sound of a bell. Unfortunately, the bell is the chime of an incoming email. As soon as we hear the chime, we turn our attention away from the task at hand to fulfill our curiosity and our need to feel important. An email only takes a few minutes to deal with yet adding to that the time it takes to get refocused on your work can lead to 5 – 10 minutes of low productivity per email. Multiply that by the number of notifications you receive, and you could easily be losing hours of productive time a day. No wonder you always feel overwhelmed with work!

Keep your email software closed, and your phone on mute while you work. Schedule two or three breaks within your day to deal with emails and messages. This allows you to break from your tasks when it is convenient and stay focused and productive throughout the day. USE A TIME TRACKING APP When you are in midst of work, you don’t realize where your time gets sucked up. Since downloading a time tracking app (I use RescueTime, but there are lots of others to choose from), I have been able to see how much time I spend in different programs and if I have too much idle time. The program runs in the background of your computer system and provides you with a weekly breakdown of your time. I never realized how much time my daily crossword puzzles took up. Once seeing the data, I was able to be more conscious about when I play games and what needs to get done first. This type
of software is great to help employees be more productive, but I strongly suggest not to use it to spy on them. This can negatively effect their trust in you and commitment to your company. These three easy steps are not only great ways to improve productivity, it’s also excellent for being more strategic and intentional in your business. Teal It Up strives to raise awareness about ovarian cancer, support other ovarian cancer patients, and raise funds for critical research initiatives in ovarian cancer detection. In the valley we go to the University of Arizona medical school, as well as local nursing schools to share our individual stories of diagnosis, treatment and survivorship • Fundraising events such as golf tournaments, clay target shooting, pistol tournament shoots, and in 2018, a bowling tournament. rizona is home to some of the most unique sights to see and places to visit in the world. The Sonoran Desert itself is one-of-a-kind, featuring the lushest desert in the world with distinct flora and fauna only found in our area. The arts and culture in the Valley of the Sun are no exception to this pattern. Many of our local galleries, theaters and museums are as unique to the Sonoran Desert as the giant Saguaro Cactus and the Gila Monster. Here are some of our favorite places to visit for a Phoenix twist on arts and culture.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MUSEUM The Musical Instrument Museum, or the MIM as we affectionately call it, displays more than 6,800 instruments collected from around the world. This state-of-the-art facility showcases musical instruments from almost all cultures and civilizations in modern history, with high tech audio and video capabilities that allow guests to not only see the instruments, but also hear their sounds and observe them being played. The MIM opened it’s doors in 2010 to provide visitors with a unique experience by bringing their collection of instruments to life through technology that enables visitors to see and hear these instruments in their original cultural settings. It is truly like no other museum in the world. The MIM hosts concert performances, events, children’s and educational programs that encourage all visitors to learn about and enjoy music. Visitors are also invited to play instruments from around the world in the Experience Gallery, where guests can try out everything from a guitar and banjo to drums or a giant gong. The Artist Gallery showcases contemporary musicians from around the world, with a collection of instruments from music icons such as John Lennon, Taylor Swift, Elvis Presley®, Carlos Santana, and many more. 14 • August 2018 • NORTH 32ND NEWS
HEARD MUSEUM One of the most distinctive museums in the Valley of the Sun is the Heard Museum. Founded in 1929, the Heard is internationally recognized for the superior quality of its collections, world-class exhibitions, educational programming and unrivaled festivals. The museum has one of the largest and most outstanding collections of American Indian artwork in the country. It includes historic, cultural and fine art collections of more than 3600 pieces, and extensive documentation of the development of the American Indian Fine Art Movement, starting in the 20th century. The Heard is dedicated to the advancement of American Indian art. The museum presents stories of American Indian people from a first-person perspective and exhibits that showcase the beauty and vitality of traditional and contemporary Native American art. The Heard Museum is a Phoenix treasure that provides visitors with a unique perspective of our cultural heritage in the Southwest.
HERBERGER THEATER CENTER The Herberger Theater Center was built in 1989 as a key component of downtown Phoenix redevelopment and revitalization efforts. The non-profit center supports and fosters the growth of performing arts in Phoenix, and has gone a long way toward contributing to the cultural and educational development of performing arts in the Valley of the Sun. The Herberger attracts around 120,000 patrons annually, including more than 30,000 school-aged children who get the opportunity to share the unique experience of live performing arts. A hub of performing arts in Phoenix, the Herberger Theater Center is home to various resident and visiting companies, including: Arizona Theatre Company, Center Dance Ensemble, iTheatre Collaborative, Arizona Opera, Childsplay Theatre, Arizona Broadway Theatre, and Valley Youth Theatre. The variety of performances and theater troupes and it’s place in the historic revitalization efforts of downtown Phoenix make a visit to the Herberger a great way to enjoy a performing arts experience unique to the Valley of the Sun.
PHOENIX ART MUSEUM As the largest art museum in the Southwestern United States, the Phoenix Art Museum is a premier destination for world-class visual arts. The museum provides access to more than 19,000 works of American, Asian, European, Latin American, Western American, modern and contemporary art, and fashion design. Built in 1959, the Phoenix Art Museum has hosted more than 400 exhibitions and millions of visitors with the simple mission to be “a vibrant destination connecting people to great art from around the world to enrich their lives and communities.” The museum provides a variety of exhibitions and public programs for visitors all year, including tours, lectures, films, special events and educational opportunities. Visitors can also enjoy photography exhibitions through the Museum’s landmark partnership with the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona. To that end, a check-up is also a good idea before a trip, as vaccinations or preventive medications may be needed before traveling.

A
s summer winds down and fall quickly approaches, many high school graduates may still be considering their next step both personally and professionally. Furthermore, as the job market continues to show signs of improvement, many working adults may be looking for ways to get ahead in their current job or may be interested in switching careers. Whether you are a recent high school graduate or a working adult, starting or returning to college today will definitely help you to create a better tomorrow. In my 15 years working with community college students, I am constantly amazed with just how many activities and responsibilities are part of our students’ lives. Many college students juggle their studies with part-time jobs and family responsibilities, often pulling them in multiple directions. Sometimes, students are able to thrive with such busy lives, and they can handle the hectic pace of managing college while having so little free time. These success stories are often so inspiring! Other students, however, struggle to fit their studies into their busy schedules and consequently, may choose to postpone their college career until their lives are more manageable. Unfortunately, many students who make this decision often do not return to college because life often gets in the way. This is why I encourage students to start their college journey, even if only enrolling in one class, to experience the excitement of the college learning environment and to begin to build a better tomorrow. Fortunately, college campuses are becoming better prepared to meet the needs of students leading such busy lives. Faculty, staff, and administrators are working to reshape the mindset from whether students are ready for college to whether colleges are ready for students. This paradigm shift creates more innovative ways to support learning and to support students in achieving their goals. First, most colleges offer flexible start dates for their courses. Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC), for example, offers a wide array of courses that start throughout each semester, providing students with flexibility to begin courses
in a timeframe that meets their needs. In addition, most colleges offer different ways to take courses, either face-to-face or in an online learning environment. This variety appeals to the working professional or the busy parent, again providing the necessary flexibility for students to take courses in a manner that best suits their learning needs. College campuses are also redesigning their support services to meet students’ needs. For example, online tutoring services are offered at most colleges to allow students to receive the additional support they need when they need it. Similarly, the PVCC library offers a 24/7 Ask a Librarian service that provides around the clock research support for students. Finally, colleges have created electronic student centers that allow students the ability to enroll and pay for classes, and even to seek advising. Students sometimes experience anxiety when stepping into a college classroom for the first time, questioning whether they will be able to keep up with the pace of the college coursework, or if college is even the right place for them. One of the hallmarks of community colleges, however, is they strive to provide a supportive and welcoming environment. One way this is accomplished is by having lower class sizes, with most classes ranging from 20-30 students. Additionally, instructors take the time to get to know their students, placing a high value on building relationships in the classroom to support student learning. Finally, colleges offer college success courses to assist students in transitioning back to the classroom. These courses, taught by highly qualified faculty counselors, provide students with the necessary tips and strategies to be successful. Starting college now is a great choice. There will be a variety of reasons why you shouldn’t start your college journey today; however, colleges are designed to meet your needs. he leap from elementary school to middle school is a big one. Students entering middle school are no longer the big fish in the pond. The world of change, independence and opportunity are opening up. For some students, they may have an older sibling or friend attending the school who can provide insider tips for middle school success. Here are a few tips to ensure that the transition from elementary school to middle school is successful for all students. SCHEDULE A TOUR If you and your child haven’t already visited the school, this is a good opportunity to schedule a tour of the new school. School tours allow you to get an inside look at the day-today activities that happen in middle school. Make sure you bring a list of questions that you want to address by the end of the tour and jot down any follow-up questions you may have. Attend your child’s meet the teacher or back to school event. This is a good time for your child to meet his or her teachers and get acquainted with the layout of the school.
GET ORGANIZED Organization is the key to success in middle school and will prepare your child for high school and beyond. With several classes to prepare for each day, your child may want to have a separate folder and/or notebook for each subject. Also, a student planner may come in handy to jot down important information such as deadlines for assignments and testing dates. ASK FOR HELP Your child may need some time to adjust to the new routines of middle school. After a few weeks, if your child still needs help, ask for it. It’s important that students speak up and ask questions in class to clarify any content that they don’t understand. Remember that teachers, counselors and administrators are there to help your child succeed. FROST is a student-driven, tutoring program that creates a casual, easy to use learning environment for students who need extra assistance with their academic subjects. Qualified high school students are available to provide tutoring in any subject matter for any student, kindergarten through 12th grade. GET INVOLVED Being involved in school activities is one way to ensure that your child’s middle school experience is fun and memorable. Encourage your child to join clubs, school committees and run for student government. Throughout the school year, there maybe dance or athletic events that your middle schooler may want to attend. Show your support by offering to drive. Parents are also encouraged to be involved in their child’s school by being a PTO member, volunteering at the school or chaperoning a school dance or field trips.

PICK YOUR PLACE Every property offers different features, so do your homework before locking into a lease. Compare amenities for each rental to decide which fits your needs best. Is location the most important factor? Does a big bathroom top your list? Will you have a set parking spot or on-site laundry? Next, shop around. s it hot in Phoenix? Yes! The heat applies to both the weather and the real estate market.
Ultimately, we decided to combine the July and August North 32nd Home Tours as inventory was moving quickly enough that we had a hard time keeping enough properties on the tour. Certainly, there are parameters to the houses that are moving quickly within the neighborhood. Homes under $500K are moving faster than homes above $500K. While it is predominantly a seller’s market now, homebuyers are still discerning. They know the difference between a quick flip and a quality
remodel. Homes done well and priced well are selling quickly. Homes that are priced too high or miss the mark are sitting on the market longer. There is still room in our neighborhood for quality remodels which will continue to propel the market up. Homebuyers continue to seek our North 32nd community for its desirable proximity to the best of everything in Phoenix - the Phoenix Mountain Preserve surrounding our community, the ease of commuting on SR-51 and the many new businesses coming to our community. While prices have increased over the last four years throughout North 32nd, the 85028 and 85032 zips are still significantly more affordable than other comparable neighborhoods within Phoenix.

INCREDIBLES 2
Immediately following the events of the first film, a wealthy businessman asks Elastigirl to help him on a project that could make superheroes legal again. Brad Bird’s follow-up to his 2004 hit is probably the best sequel Pixar has made since Toy Story 3. What’s great is that it avoids what could have been so many obvious points and twists, and instead lets the characters make smart decisions. It rarely forces them to have dumb, outof-character moments just to advance the plot. It also doesn’t talk down to the children viewers by spelling everything out, which leaves us with a film that both old and young can enjoy. As per usual with Pixar, it also features memorable and likable characters as well as beautiful animation. The themes have been seen before in previous Brad Bird films (Ratatouille, Tomorrowland, etc) but for this day and age we are experiencing, it is a good, hopeful message.
SICARIO: DAY OF THE SOLDADO
Alejandro Gillick is asked yet again for assistance by FBI Agent Matt Graver to get approval on a war against drug cartels, but the kidnapping of a young girl causes tension between the two as the plan goes wrong. Compared to the first Sicario, Day of the Soldado feels like it belongs in a different film series, as it has more of an action thriller feel, as opposed to the crime drama feel of its predecessor. In doing that, the new film loses a lot of what made the first one interesting, such as the blurred morals. The film is fine on its own, as the action scenes are shot and edited fluently, and Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin are once again great in their roles. But turning the former into the hero does not line up with the ruthless assassin shown before, and it contributes to the generic feeling of the film. It’s a brutal film with some interesting ideas but sadly doesn’t really go anywhere with them.

THE FIRST PURGE
After achieving power in the United States, the NFAA sets up an experiment in Staten Island that the population refers to as “The Purge”. To director Gerard McMurray’s credit, he brings a style to The First Purge that does make it stand out from the previous films, with a more synth-based score and darker (both literally and figuratively) look to the film. Lex Scott Davis and Y’Lan Noel are the new leads in the film, and they both do a good job with their characters, as they are not superheroes but can still be tough yet likable. Throughout the film as a whole, there are some strange editing choices (including a fade to black in the middle of a fight scene) and an overuse of hip-hop music that sucks away a lot of the tension. The script (written by series creator James DeMonaco) also falls into many horror film traps and clichés. As for the storylines politics, I appreciate how they continue to be open with their messages. Strangely and unfortunately however, I don’t think they went all the way with some aspects, such as the military sending in troops to contribute more killings. There is a lot that could be done with the commentary, but it feels like a step back from the previous film.
SORRY TO BOTHER YOU
A man in Oakland sees his life change in strange ways after getting work as a telemarketer. There’s no easy way to describe the greatness that is Sorry to Bother You, you just need to experience it for yourself. But if I must, here we have a film with a cast of so many talented actors (Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson and Armie Hammer to name a few) offering different POV’s for their characters in their fantastic performances. You have humor that can be both subtle and blatant in its messages, and it always works. There is also loads of insane imagery that will leave you terrified or laughing. That should be enough to convince you to see it, right?

VIP AIRSOFT: A FUN PLACE FOR YOUR NEXT GROUP EVENT OR PARTY By Jennifer Marshall
A
re you looking for a fresh, innovative way to celebrate your child’s birthday or host your company’s next corporate event? If you’re tired of all the ho-hum ideas and places, then you need to book VIP Airsoft for your next big celebration. But what is VIP Airsoft? Airsoft is similar to
paintball. They’re both defined as recreational and competitive shooting sports, but they’re still different. Instead of using paintballs, Airsoft uses what is called “spherical plastic projectiles” also known as airsoft pellets. As the name suggests, they’re composed of a plastic material. These air pellets are loaded into airsoft guns, which are a type of air gun. Airsoft is a popular sport with an ever growing list of fans. In June 2017, Bryan Bijonowski opened a second state-of-the-art indoor airsoft arena in the Phoenix area—VIP Airsoft. Except when booked for a private function, open hours are considered public sessions whereby people can walk in and participate. When enough players are assembled, they’re divided into two teams for about 10 minutes of action after which the referee calls the game and proclaims the winner. “When someone gets hit, they call themselves out, go back to the restart point and start over,” said Bijonowski. “You might have four or five lives in

the game kind of like a video game.” Public session games are open to kids and adults. Children must be 10 years and older to join a team. The only age exception is for eight and nine year olds who are exceptionally athletic. VIP Airsoft offers an array of different types of games for clients to play. During public sessions,

the referees determine which particular games will be played at that time. Capture the flag and zombie games are always crowd pleasers. For real adrenaline junkies, a mock bomb is available to be disarmed. Just imagine—you can be the superhero who saves the world! Protection type games are fun, too, where, for example, the objective is to protect a movie or rock star, which means one team will be guarding while the other team attempts to take out the security detail. Reservations can be made to host a private affair at VIP Airsoft. The arena is perfect for birthday parties and corporate events. The arena also hosts themed overnighters for kids. For young children between six and nine, they offer peewee nerf parties. And since nothing makes a party better than pizza and soda, they have an in-house concession for hungry young tummies. With so much emphasis on kids, safety is a natural question. According to Bijonowski, the sport is completely safe. VIP Airsoft also uses the latest safety technology. All players wear gloves, long sleeves, chest protectors, helmets and face protection in the form of masks. Safety equipment is available for
rent, and for those who would rather purchase their own gear, a pro shop is located on-site.
How, then, did Bijonowski get into such a unique and expanding business? Back in the early 2000s, he owned a small shop in Gilbert specializing in PC gaming; his shop also sold paintball gear. Fast forward a few years, and he operated a small paintball field at his Gilbert church; he did this for about six years. Located in the same strip mall as his PC game shop was a vacant unit that had been empty for about 10 years. Around 2009, inspiration struck, and Bijonowski wrote an official business plan for his indoor airsoft arena. He presented his plan to the strip mall’s owner who reviewed it and was immediately interested. You could say that he was ahead of his time as not many airsoft arenas existed in the late 2000s. “The owner went out to California to see an airsoft arena,” said Bijonowski. “He saw it was in a crummy area and saw people streaming in the door. He said if this place is popular in a crummy warehouse area, it should do well in a nicer place.”
“Demographics” was Bijonowski’s one word answer when asked how he came to open his newest location here near the corner of North 32nd Street and East Shea Boulevard. This new arena is approximately 30 miles from his Gilbert location. It can be a very easy and fun way to make extra

Season refers to clothing primarily -- and has to do with what people are wearing (or using) at the moment. You should not expect to sell your long, wool winter coat when it is 100+ degrees outside! Also, Christmas décor is not popular in February, for example. On the flip side, selling your coats and Christmas merchandise at the right time of year can be extremely profitable.
