His love for the game helped propel it into the American mainstream like never before. During the 1950s, thanks to Ike - and with a little help from another legendary figure in golf (aka my Boyfriend… a king in his own right) - the sport saw a period of unprecedented growth and popularity. Golf flourished across the nation and abroad and has been the sport of Presidents ever since. Recently another Titan of golf, Donald Trump, regained the reigns of the Presidency. Golf will once again flourish like never before. Jan Stephenson, Florida Sports Hall of Fame Inductee

The Florida Sports Hall of Fame recognizes and honors Florida’s greatest sports figures. This year’s eight inductees represent a variety of sports – Football, Cheerleading, Soccer, Track and Field, Basketball, Athletic Trainer, and Golf.

Golf was represented by LPGA Legend, Jan Stephenson. Born in Australia, Jan Stephenson has called Florida home for over 20 years.

Jan joined the LPGA Tour and was named LPGA Rookie of the Year in 1974. Her career included winning 3 Major Championship events and 16 LPGA Tour Events. She famously became the face of the LPGA.

She was instrumental in developing the LPGA Legends Tours, (the official Seniors Tour of the LPGA) and claimed 10 victories. Her most recent win on the Tour was in 2021. She was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2019.

Jan is one of only a few women golf course designers, designing Indian River Preserve located just north of Titusville in Mims, FL.

Her foundation, Jan Stephenson’s Crossroads Foundation for Wounded Warriors, purchased Tarpon Woods Golf Club in Palm Harbor, FL. The Foundation provides opportunities for disabled veterans and first responders to enjoy golf.

This year’s inductees include:

William Floyd (Football) – A running back out of Lakewood High School in St. Petersburg, FL. He helped FSU win their first National Championship in 1993 and was part of the San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl XXIX Championship team.

Linda Gooch (Cheerleading) – A graduate of Orlando Oak Ridge H.S., Gooch was a four-year letter-winner at UCF, as a cheerleader, and just finished her 40th season as the coach of UCF’s nationally respected cheerleading team. Gooch has just finished her 40th season as the coach of UCF’s nationally respected cheerleading team and head coach of UCF’s spirit program.

Ashlyn Harris (Soccer) - Born in Cocoa Beach, Ashlyn Harris was a standout for Satellite High School before shooting to stardom as

a member of the 2015 and 2019 World Cup Champion teams. Harris was also part of the inaugural roster for the Orlando Pride of the National Women’s Soccer League.

Mike Halloway (Track Coach)Recently named National Men’s Outdoor Coach of the Year, Head Coach Mike Holloway has led the University of Florida men’s track and field teams since 2003 and the combined men’s and women’s teams since 2008. The 2024 team won their third-straight NCAA Men’s Outdoor Championships.

Scott Hutchinson (Football) - A standout lineman for Winter Park High School’s football team, MVP of the State of Florida High School All-Star Game, and shot put state champion. Hutchinson was selected in the second round of the 1978 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills where he played for four seasons. Hutchinson also played a season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their run as NFC Central Champions.

Tracy McGrady (Basketball) - Born in Bartow, FL, McGrady entered the NBA straight out of high school in 1997. Regarded as one of the

greatest scorers and shooting guards in NBA history, Tracy McGrady is a seventime NBA All-Star, seven-time AllNBA selection, twotime NBA scoring champion, and winner of the NBA Most Improved Player Award in 2001. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2017.

John Christopher (Chris) Patrick (Athletic Trainer) -

Chris Patrick is a highly esteemed Athletic Trainer who provided care for thousands of studentathletes at the University of Florida over his 48-year career there that began in 1970. With the implementation of Title IX and women’s sports, he hired the first female Athletic Trainer and helped develop the women’s athletic training support/program

and facilities. The SEC established the Chris Patrick Award, an honor given annually to the outstanding athletic trainer in the SEC as chosen by the director of sports medicine at each league’s school.

Where were you born? Did you grow up there? Washington, DC, born and raised!

Is “acting your age” overrated? Yes! I prefer, “How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?”

What do you do for a living?

Many things! I am a golf journalist, a political commentator, a communications consultant, a voice over artist…etc.

What would you like to do for a living? Make movies. The entire process fascinates me.

Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? Watch movies. Listen to all kinds of music. And I love to cook.

What golf apparel do you like to wear?

No particular brand, but I probably dress a bit more formally on the course than most people. Love a good golf cardigan!

Whom do you most admire for their inner and outer beauty?

My son. Literally the nicest guy I ever met.

Tell us about your first kiss?

On my first date in the 7th grade. We saw the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory!

What three things would you need to survive on a deserted island?

A way off the island, and a way back there because

My son, see above.

What do you find to be the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course?

People who rarely play that get angry and behave badly when they play poorly. I prefer good company to a good player any day.

Name the three most important things to you in this world. The people that I love. The opportunity to meet and appreciate every person I meet. Maintaining a sense of gratitude.

Given the choice; would you select love, success, or money to keep yourself happy?

To me, true success is having what you need to enjoy who you want when you want.

What do you fear the most? Catastrophic illness. Been there, done that.

What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome?

That answer changes a lot…today, I’ll say the Rat Pack. Frank, Sammy and Dean.

What are some of your great accomplishments?

I am told that I am one of the few golf writers of color to have won an award from the PGA, the National Association of Black Journalists and the Golf Writers Association of America. Also, I was proud to have my story about Charles Howell III included in ESPN – The Undefeated anthology of the greatest stories in their history.

I have interviewed 25 Hall of Fame golfers. Gary Player said I was more like Mandela then anyone he has ever met.

Relaxed evening at home, or nightclub and cocktails?

A relaxed cocktail at home, an Old Fashioned with Michter’s bourbon.

Last time you spewed something through your nose from laughing so hard?

Pretty much every time I watch Veep!

“The never-ending aesthetics, turf conditions and overall fairness in playability for the amateur golfer is what makes Mystic Rock so enjoyable,” said John Harris after a recent visit.  “There is nothing tricked up and it’s all kind of right in front of you which most players like myself appreciate.

Upgraded in 2004 and then most recently tweaked again in 2021, Mystic Rock keeps its presentation in pristine condition complementing other resort experiences. The PGA Tour is currently in discussion with the resort about bringing an event back out to Nemacolin in September of 2025.

“2006 was a while ago, so theres a whole generation of talent on TOUR that maybe has never heard of Nemacolin or never played either of these incredible courses so in that aspect, I think a Tour event would definitely open up some eyes giving Nemacolin some well-deserved exposure,” said Harris.

As Mystic Rock gained attention and received national recognition as one of the Top Resort Courses in the country annually, the golf story at Nemacolin gained notable traction when it added its second Dye design in 2017, with the opening of Shepard’s Rock. The 7,290-yard par 72 contains lots of moving parts on the fairways and greens. In typical Dye fashion, the design’s intent is supposed to be both fun and challenging so keep your head on a swivel and make sure to take one of the resort’s fine caddies to help navigate the terrain. Shepard’s is definitely more demanding and undulating, offering panoramic views of the Pennsylvania Allegheny Mountains. Currently ranked No. 4 “You Can Play” in the state, Shepard’s Rock became the perfect complementing piece to Mystic Rock boosting the resort’s golf portfolio in the process on a national level.  Before the addition of Shepard’s Rock, Nemacolin was a great golf resort with many other bells and whistles to encounter once you were there. Since offering 36 holes of Championship Pete Dye mountain golf, Nemacolin has been boosted into the conversation as one of the great resort destinations in the country -- enough justification to book a flight from anywhere.

Where did you grow up?

I am originally from Knoxville Tennessee, but I came to Florida for the warmer weather. I’ll always be a Tennessee girl at heart!

What is your favorite sport to play? Favorite to watch? When I was younger, I did gymnastics, cheerleading, and soccer! I’m not as athletic now, but I still love to watch football with the family!

Do you enjoy playing golf? Are there any golfers in your family?

I love to play golf with my Fiancé! Mostly everyone in my family plays golf, so it has always been very close to my heart.

What do you feel makes this club special?

The people that I meet on a daily basis here at Mission Inn makes this club very special! Everyone is so sweet and I learn so much from everyone that I see!

What is your favorite part of being a cart girl? What is your least favorite part?

My favorite part of being a cart girl is being surrounded by the nature & water while making fun drinks for everyone! There really isn’t anything better than that!

If you weren’t a cart girl, what would you be doing? I’m currently in college to be an elementary school teacher! I’ve always loved kids so my dream is to be a second-grade teacher as soon as I graduate next year!

What is your most memorable moment working as a cart girl?

I got the chance to meet the one and only Tiger Wood while he was caddying for his son Charlie! I’m still in shock to this day that I had that wonderful opportunity!

Do you think the cart girls should be able to dress differently? How you prefer dress if you were given a choice? Golf is a very classy sport, so I believe cart girls should dress in that manner!

What is the funniest thing you’ve ever seen on the golf course?

A group brought a fake snake and was scaring people with it! Someone was running from it and almost fell into the pond!

What type of music do you prefer?

I love pretty much any music, but country music is my favorite! A couple of my favorite artists are Cody Johnson, Megan Moroney, and Riley Green.

What is your idea of “the perfect date”?

My idea of the perfect date would be putting blankets down in the truck bed and watching the sunset while eating Mexican food take out!

What hobbies do you enjoy? I love to go to the beach, go shopping, and
anything artistic with my friends!

For years I always talked about doing some type of E-commerce business. But could never put my finger on what that one thing would be. Being in the restaurant business for over 40 year and loving what I did, I knew I had to find something I loved to do after I sold our restaurant. Golf!! I’ve been playing my whole life and the last few years all my vacation days and days off revolved around a tee time somewhere.

So, after selling our restaurant I started playing golf every other day and losing so many more golf balls. I started playing with so many different balls trying to find that one golf ball for me. I tried the bigname brands the no name brands. Finally, one day I said I’m going to make a ball for me. So, after 3 years of research and development and a lot of traveling, I found the best manufacture and the PRO TX3 was developed.

But being a new start up company with no name in the golf industry everyone thought I was crazy. Coming from the restaurant business a big part of your business models was about giving back to the community. From catering benefits to support our favorite children’s home, breast cancer and law enforcement just to name a few.

So how could I do this with golf? So, we came up with the idea of every box of golf balls sold we would DONATE a sleeve of balls to youth programs. So, One Golf Company was born.

Mary Jane Hanley didn’t choose to become the public face of a new alcohol and drug treatment center being planned for Palm Beach County in the early1980s. The mission chose her.

Mary Jane and her husband, John W. “Jack” Hanley, had lived the American dream in the postWorld War II economic boom. But the 1960s alcohol-infused social life of the wife of a corporate executive overwhelmed the somewhat shy Mary Jane Hanley.

“I found that a couple of drinks helped me get over my shyness, and I could be more outgoing,” she later said.

Over the years, the social pressures increased, and Mary Jane’s “couple of drinks” became three, or four, or more. Most people didn’t understand alcoholism in those days. Jack’s attitude was, “Why can’t she just stop?”

By 1975, her drinking in public had become so concerning to Jack that she retreated to drinking at home. Finally, she thought to herself, “Something is definitely wrong. You must be an alcoholic.” At that very moment, she said, Jack walked through the front door and said, “Mary Jane, I can’t work.” “I will never, as long as I

How One Woman’s Courage Broke Through the Stigma and Brought Light to the Dark Corners of Addiction

live, forget the face on that man,” said Mary Jane years later. “That’s when I hit bottom.” She went to the telephone and called a local addiction treatment center.

“After I had been in treatment about two-to-three weeks, I was sitting in the back lawn of the center, all by myself. And, all of a sudden, this great peace came over me. I realized, ‘you are an alcoholic, you belong here.’ It was as though a big cloak had been lifted from my shoulder.”

She completed her treatment and has remained sober ever since. Returning home, though, the social stigma of those dark days remained.

She largely kept her addiction to herself and her AA meetings.

But when the family decided to create a major drug and alcohol treatment center in West Palm Beach, she knew she had to come out. Mary Jane was with Jack at a fundraising event at their new South Florida home in Lost Tree Village. Mary Jane stood up and told her story.

As Jack tells it, “I was sitting at

the head table with her, watching the audience. There were 150 to 200 of her friends there, and when she told her story, tears were streaming down the cheeks of men and women. It was the single most courageous act I’d ever seen…

She is one gutsy lady.”

That coming out was just the beginning.

In the intervening years, Mary Jane Hanley continued to advocate on behalf of people in need and those who provide quality, evidence-based treatment and recovery services.

Hanley Center, as it became known, and Hanley Foundation continue to be national leaders in the field of substance use disorders.

Her lifelong enthusiasm for golf saw her serving as a member of the Hyde Park Country Club, Cincinnati Country Club and Camargo Club, all of Cincinnati, Ohio, Old Warson Country Club of St. Louis, Missouri, The Lost Tree Club, The Piper’s Landing Club, The Bent Pine Club and the Oak Harbor Club, all in Florida and Roaring Gap Club in Roaring Gap, North Carolina.

Revolutionizing The South Florida PGA: Kevin Marrone

In 1980, the South Florida PGA Section had an annual revenue of $96,000 and an annual cost of doing business of $110,000. The South Florida PGA Foundation and the Junior Tour had yet to be established, and the South Florida PGA GolfPass program, the largest source of net revenue to the Section today, was not even a thought.

This and much more would soon change as Kevin Marrone, a 2009 South Florida PGA Hall of Fame inductee, secured the reigns as Executive Director of the South Florida PGA in 1981.

Before moving to the Section, Marrone served as the General Manager of Jacaranda Golf Club in Plantation, Florida. Dave Anderson, a PGA Professional at Jacaranda, mentioned the opening at the Section to Marrone. Interested in the position, Marrone spoke with SFPGA Section President Roger Kennedy Sr., PGA.

While learning more about the operation, Kennedy shared the Section’s financial state. After hearing this, Marrone questioned how he would be compensated, to which Kennedy replied, “That is up to you to figure out.”

Marrone accepted the challenge, walking into an office that consisted of himself and a secretary. For the next 25 years, Marrone would grow the Section exponentially, building the staff and developing integral programs, such as the South Florida PGA Junior Tour, Foundation, and GolfPass, allowing the Section to thrive for decades.

“Kevin was just so organized and forward-thinking,” said Kennedy. “He quickly became the best Executive Director in the country.”

First, the South Florida PGA

Junior Golf program which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. With the help of Junior Golf Committee Members Don Law, PGA, and Bobby Brown, PGA, the trio developed the Junior Tour with a strong emphasis on providing an affordable, competitive playing opportunity while providing young athletes an avenue to college.

The Tour started with six events annually for around 70 juniors, which quickly doubled the following year due to the increase in demand. Shortly after, a second Tour was created to give more opportunities while running each event to the “PGA TOUR Level,” recalled Law.

Marrone’s support was invaluable to Law, allowing him to confidently bring new ideas to the table.

“He bought into it, lock, stock, and barrel,” said Law. “I can’t overstate the importance of having that kind of support because it would have never worked out. I was fortunate to work with Kevin.”

The program has grown to heights even Marrone and Law did not envision. With a membership of 1,300 plus, the program has three competitive Tours and administers nearly

100 events annually.

“The creation of the Junior Golf Program allowed us to meet some of the most amazing and wonderful people,” recalled Marrone. “It was certainly my number one accomplishment.”

Next, the South Florida PGA GolfPass program, which has grown to be the Section’s largest source of net revenue and has consistently broken sales records year after year.

The GolfPass originally started as the Florida Passport, a golfplaying program that covered the entire state of Florida and included partnerships with the South and North Florida PGA Sections. The program was eventually dismantled, but Marrone secured the south Florida territory, resulting in the South Florida PGA GolfPass, a summer playing program with more than 100 courses.

During its initial stages, the GolfPass was limited to well under 5,000 purchasers; today, more than 14,000 were sold this year alone.

“It does not surprise me that it continues to grow because of the people I worked with all those years,” explained Marrone. “They were stars, no question about it.”

Lastly, the South Florida PGA Foundation, the heartbeat of the SFPGA. As the Section continued to grow at astronomical rates, Marrone identified a greater need for community involvement. Starting at the base level, the Foundation began spreading its mission to local facilities as a way to raise money for college scholarships and to support Junior Golf.

Because of Marrone’s effort in putting the Section in a great financial position and with the leadership of Tom Wildenhaus, PGA, Michael O’Brien, and Kevin Murphy, PGA, the SFPGA Foundation took off in 2010 to positively impact the South Florida community on and off the golf course. Focusing on youth, military, and families as the three pillars, the Foundation has impacted over 15,000 individuals.

“When he retired, we had one direction, which was up because it was all there for us. It was all set in motion, and all we had to do was follow through,” explained Wildenahus.

These programs are just three examples of the commitment and dedication made to the South Florida PGA, not only during Marrone’s time as Executive Director but proceeding his tenure leaving the Section in a financial

position to continue to grow.

While all of these programs have evolved into incredible Section assets, they would not have been possible without the business decisions Marrone made to set the Section up for further success.

“His business acumen, his ability to read through contracts and dissect those kinds of things, was really cool to be a part of,” said Wildenhaus. “He really did set the Section up in a good, solid

financial foundation which allowed us to do the things we do today.”

Humble about his triumphs and accomplishments, Marrone credits his success to the people around him, who made the Section what it is today.

“I can’t stress it enough. I’m blessed to have the people who worked with me in the Section,” explained Marrone. “I kind of directed a lot of things, but there were many people behind me that had a far larger impact than many people know.”

In another effort to allow the Section to grow, Marrone hired Geoff Lofstead as Director of Operations in 2002, and a succession plan was developed for his ultimate retirement at the end of 2008.

“Kevin taught me a great deal about how to work with a board, and his business acumen was second to none,” explained Lofstead. “So much of our success today is a direct result of having such a solid foundation of programs, leadership, and financial stability when he retired.”

When Marrone retired in 2008, the Section had grown to six fulltime employees and an annual budget ten times greater than what Marrone had adopted. The Section and Foundation now operate with a budget in excess of $6 million and a full time staff of 13.

“I can’t tell you how he did it; he brought us from practically nothing to where we are now,” exclaimed Kennedy.

From 2007 to 2014, Bermuda proudly hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in mid-October pairing the winners of all four majors in a 36-hole event vying for bragging rights and a $1.3 million prize purse.

Here you can play some of the more picturesque courses in the world as well as follow alongside the footsteps of the most decorated professional golfers. 2010 participant Martin Kaymer reportedly said, “It’s like a paradise, playing golf in paradise” and I could not agree any more.

During my brief visit I only got a chance to play four of their courses and I was not disappointed.

Mid Ocean Club was designed in 1922 by Canadian born architect Charles Blair Macdonald and revised in 1953 by legendary architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. Home of the 2007 and 2008 PGA Grand Slam of Golf, this is a true ocean layout that consistently ranks as one of the finest in the world. It’s a private course but allows guests at limited times during weekdays for $375.

Port Royal Golf Course was

originally designed in 1970 by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. but was lengthened to 6,842 yards by Roger Rulewich, a Jones protégé, so that it could host the 2009 to 2014 PGA Grand Slam of Golf. Port Royal has more of a modern feel with a breathtaking tropical landscape, sweeping ocean vistas and one of the greatest holes in golf. Port Royal is a public course that will set you back $210 for 18 holes.

Tucker’s Point was originally designed by Charles H. Banks in 1932 however this 18-hole par 70 course has gone through numerous modifications over the years. I would highly recommend you swallow your pride and move up a set of tees since accuracy is much more important than distance on this course. This is a private course but allows visitors. If you are a Rosewood Hotel guest green fees with cart are $195 otherwise they are $225.

Turtle Hill Golf Club is adjacent to the Fairmont Southampton Hotel and a great way to start your vacation or hone your short game. A scenic 18-hole 2,873-yard executive golf course that has been rated as one of the top 5 par-3’s in the world by Golf Magazine. It features with lots of elevation changes, heavily bunkered greens, numerous water hazards and great views of the aquamarine-coloured ocean. Green fees are $64.

Shot tracking and data analysis have helped elite Scottish amateur Jennifer Saxton drop five strokes off her handicap

For every golfer who takes the game seriously, the same six letters loom ominously, and almost constantly, over our heads when we think about our oncourse performance. In a sport in which “perfect” simply doesn’t exist, it’s the pursuit of B-E-TT-E-R that has us all obsessed.

“How much practice will I need to put in to be three shots better?”

“How many lessons until this swing change makes me better?”

“If I add 10 yards to my drives, will my scores be better?”

The questions and the pursuit never stop.

The legendary Ben Hogan famously insisted those answers must be dug “out of the dirt,” but with today’s technology, like Shot Scope’s performance-tracking handhelds, laser rangefinders and GPS watches, every shot a golfer hits can illuminate the roadmap to game improvement. By tracking your shots, you’re enabling Shot Scope to analyze your game the way an MRI leaves nothing to chance with its precision scanning. Jennifer Saxton, Shot Scope’s marketing manager, has always excelled as a golfer. She became a scratch player during her university

years while earning a Marketing and Sports Studies degree at the University of Stirling. For the past six years, she’s been working with influencers, industry partners, and golf media to help maximize brand reach and promote Shot Scope’s innovative products and services.

Ask any teacher or playing professional what the hardest leap to make as an improving golfer is, and they will tell you it’s the jump from scratch to plus. So, how has Saxton achieved one of the toughest accomplishments in the game? It starts with data and leads to a plan. The rest is hard work.

The inclusion of women at the 2024 Concession Cup gives those of us who have maybe elected not to play professionally but instead work and continue to play golf the opportunity to still compete at a high level as well. As a team, we are hoping to be the first ones to get our name on that trophy and be in the history books forever.”

Saxton was an early adopter to performance tracking and has been using her stats to better her practice and on-course performance for the last 10 years, the last six of those through Shot Scope’s automatic tracking system. “The change to Shot Scope meant it was faster and easier to track my performance without having to manually input my stats after a round,” she says. “The biggest thing I have taken from tracking my game is managing expectations, which has really helped with my mindset on the course. It has helped me set realistic expectations for myself around shots. For

example, I would quite often get annoyed because I didn’t hit a chip shot to within 3ft, but in reality, my average is 10ft, so anything inside that is above average.”

Working inside the walls at Shot Scope and feeding off the energy of the data day-after-day has helped her make better decisions, too. For example, she knows what the percentage shots are. She now hits driver off the tee wherever possible because the closer she is to the green, the closer she will hit her approach. She also doesn’t lay back on par 5s and has seen her scores improve. That’s the power of data.

Some of Saxton’s findings about her game have been unexpected. “To be honest, I thought I was quite a good putter, but, unfortunately, I

am not as good as I thought. Over the last couple of years my stats around six- to 12-ft putts have been poor,” she explains. “The data highlighted that I needed to improve my putting, and more specifically, 6-9ft and 9-12ft was revealing. Working with my coach, we identified a few setup tweaks to be made, and when I practice, I always do the same maintenance drills to try and improve this.”

Individual parts of Saxton’s game are improving by following the data she finds in her Shot Scope analytics.

“A few years ago, I had a bit of a costly miss off the tee that often resulted in bogeys and doubles. So, I made some changes with my driver (technique and, more recently, a new driver) and have seen my Fairway Hit Percentages go from 51 percent in 2021 to 65 percent in 2024.

Winning the St Rule Trophy in 2022 on the famed Old Course at St. Andrews is simply the stuff of dreams and one of Saxton’s proudest achievements. Closing out the 54-hole event was even more special because the grandstands

were up in preparation for the 150th Open Championship.

“In the lead up to the event I had been working on an e-book ‘The Ultimate Guide to St. Andrews: How amateur golfers perform around the Old Course,’” Saxton explains. “This meant I was looking at the Old Course nearly every day for months, learning all the stats and everything there was to know about the course. Now, yes I had been fortunate enough to have played the course many times before, but I genuinely believe this project at work directly impacted my performance on the Old Course. I felt as though I knew exactly where I could and couldn’t hit it. It wasn’t a perfect performance; I had my issues on the Par 3 11th

hole – but that’s golf for you. It is a round of golf and a tournament I will always remember.”

Saxton plays at an elite level, no doubt, but the things she has learned and applied to improve her game can be applied to anyone’s game and pursuit of shooting lower scores.

“For a golfer who has just decided to start tracking data it might seem daunting, however Shot Scope makes it easy to learn some key things about your game. For the majority of golfers, learning how far they hit their clubs on the course makes a huge difference. In general, the stats highlight that amateur golfers come up short 50 percent of the time (on approach shots). Hitting more club or playing to the back of the green yardage are two ways we have seen amateur golfers improve quickly without changing their swing,” Saxton advises. “Tracking data doesn’t have to be complicated. You can keep it as simple as you like with Shot Scope. But if you’re like me, the more you play and dive into the stats, the more you want to look at your progress.”

The bigger challenge for golfers is

just starting to track their shots and making it a regular habit, but with a little effort and consistency, you can start to see some fascinating trends and numbers that will motivate you to practice more.

“My best advice is track every time you play. Don’t just track competition rounds, or good rounds, track them all. You can always filter out rounds you don’t want to look at in your stats. Once you’ve tracked enough rounds, it becomes part of your game, you don’t even have to think about it,” Saxton adds. “If you’re working with a teacher on a regular basis, encourage them to track your progress using The Shot Scope Academy in Shot Scope. It gives a coach full access to a student’s account, meaning they

can see exactly what the student sees and view every round with statistics. They will be able to pinpoint exactly where you should be focusing in order to improve.”

From a coach’s perspective, having multiple students using Shot Scope means they can quickly and easily compare students against one another, as well as comparing any students’ statistics versus the Shot Scope Handicap benchmarks. This can help the coach set goals and targets for the student going forward.

“My coach uses Shot Scope Academy to view my stats,” Saxton said. “She recently moved to America, so it allows her to keep an eye on what I am doing on the course from afar. Generally, we review in more detail at the end of the season and develop a plan for the winter and offseason for me to work on.”

Inaugural SFPGA West Coast Play Yellow Birdie Bash Raising

Over $250,000

The South Florida PGA held its first West Coast Play Yellow Birdie Bash at The Glades Golf & Country Club to raise funds for the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida and the South Florida PGA Foundation.

A total of $255,688 was raised, surpassing the $200,000 fundraising goal. Donations will continue to be accepted until Friday, October 25th.

During the event, 36 South Florida PGA of America Professionals completed 81 holes on The Pines and The Palmetto courses at The Glades, making as many birdies as possible in a team doubles format. Each birdie was backed by donor pledges and funds raised will support the missions of the SFPGA Foundation and Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.

The Old Collier Golf Club Professionals Steve Waugh, PGA General Manager and Jason Martin, PGA Director of Golf were the highest earners, raising over $45,000 through 63 birdies.

Over $1 million has been raised through past East Coast Play Yellow Birdie Bash events and this recent West Coast event

to support youth, military, and families in the local community.

To represent Team USA at the Women’s PGA Cup is a special honor. This feeling was captured by Sandra Changkija and Stephanie Connelly-Eiswerth at the 2024 Women’s PGA Cup! This event was at the beautiful Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, OR.

The Women’s PGA Cup showcased Team USA versus teams from Australia, Canada, Great Britain & Ireland, South Africa and Sweden. Team Stroke Play scores per round are comprised of the lowest of three scores from the five players. In Rounds 1, 2 and 3 respectively, Sandra carded 2-over 73, 1-over 72, and 1-under 70. Stephanie went 1-under 70, Even 71, and shot an impressive bogey-free 5-under 66 in the final round, earning her medalist honors. Sandra, Stephanie and Team USA won this year’s Women’s PGA Cup by an impressive 12 strokes with a team score of 14-under 625! The Section was thrilled to see Sandra and Stephanie represent Team USA and play a part in getting team wins.

Rod Perry has been playing some rather good golf lately. In October, he won the NFPGA’s Tournament

of Champions at the East Course at Belleair Country Club. This was a Match Play format where he bested a field of 16 of the best players in the Section. On a national stage, he competed at the 2024 Senior PGA Professional Championship at the Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort in late September and posted an impressive T17 finish!

A Turf Pirate's Journal $Generational Gratitude $

It seems Turf Pirates that we have made it into the Holiday season and traditionally we find time to think about many things such as life, career, football, faith, family and what we are thankful for past, present and future. I write this from the new headquarters of the ancient and honorable tribe of Turf Pirates and for that I am more than grateful. 2024 proved to be a challenge for many Turf Pirates as we endured weather challenges, lost loved ones, and saw sweeping changes some small and some large. We have, however, grown through it all and in these moments of reflection I am reminded that there is a pattern to it all. We are born and literally learn how to make our way in the world. Someone by example gives us skills to grow and be successful, We as golf course superintendents are still an apprentice occupation, most of us are part of a larger superintendent tree that branches from the vintage founders through a tapestry of innovators that keep the traditions but mix in new and better ways. It is this generational way of things that I am most thankful for this year. The picture featured this month was shared with me by a former Assistant turned Golf Course Superintendent for me at one of my multi-course stops, namely Brad Willis. Brad is

awesome and has grown Bentgrass from the Carolinas to Texas. He took this picture of a young hawk and proud parent looking over the courses and the 40+ acres of native grasses that we (there is a long line of Directors, Supers and Assistants responsible for this) established over the years. I recently saw Brad at the property and his enthusiasm for the craft and sharing this picture was both humbling and inspiring. I travel a lot these days and see a lot of golf courses and still my highest hope is to see the young men and women in our industry grow and do great things. I am far from finished growing myself and often I make mistakes though never intentionally and admittedly I am now after 39 years Vintage as grass growers go. I sit at the old-timers table at turf events, mind you that

that table was full of newcomers when we first sat down but time does march on. A moment of respect seems in order for the empty seats at a once full table. Next time you attend a regional or national turf show/seminar look around the room and tell me what you see. I am proud to be a bridge between those who came before me and those who have come afterward. We are all connected in a large green generational line.

I have written a few gratitude articles over the years because I have so much to be grateful for and some of the challenges presented to me in life became some of the greatest blessings. I would ask each of you to take some time to reflect and reach out to someone who has had a deep impact on you and your career. It could be a quick email or text, but nothing beats a face-to-face reunion. I have plans to buy several long overdue lunches over the holidays. It also seems appropriate to mention that if you have hard feelings towards another Super or family member make every effort to let it go, mend the fences, and remember that forgiveness is an art best practiced rather than spoken of. God, bless you Turf Pirates and may Thanksgiving Day find you surrounded by your inner circle, making memories that are bigger than life.

Ozzie Smith named GCSAA’s 2025 Old Tom Morris Award winner Baseball Hall of Famer is helping grow golf

Ozzie Smith, National Baseball Hall of Famer, has been named the recipient of the 43rd Old Tom Morris Award presented by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). Smith will be honored Feb. 6 at the Send-Off Celebration presented in partnership with John Deere at the 2025 GCSAA Conference and Trade Show in San Diego, Calif. Since retiring from baseball, Smith has found a love for the game of golf both as an avid golfer and as someone devoted to introducing the game to children and young adults who may not have access to play. His work has resulted in bringing new players into the game. As part of this, these young players have a chance to understand the game and see all of the opportunities for potential turfgrass management careers.

The Old Tom Morris Award is presented to an individual who, through a continuing lifetime commitment to the game of golf, has helped to mold the welfare of the game in a manner and style exemplified by Old Tom Morris. Old Tom Morris was a four-time British Open winner and the legendary greenkeeper at St Andrews in Scotland.

“After a stellar Major League Baseball career, Ozzie embodies the same passion and dedication to the game of golf,” GCSAA CEO Rhett Evans said. “His ongoing efforts to grow the game, including for underserved youths, have buoyed communities and exemplify what the Old Tom Morris Award represents. In the process, he has formed friendships and developed a deep respect and appreciation for the numerous golf course superintendents he continues to interact with along the way. He’s a true ambassador for the game.”

Smith’s introduction to golf took place when former St. Louis Cardinals manager Whitey Herzog invited Smith to hit the opening shot in his charity golf tournament.

“‘I went out that day and the first ball I hit was right down the middle,” Smith said. “I was hooked for life.”

In addition to playing, he is using golf as a way to give back by introducing young people and underserved

populations to the game.

“I’m just a baseball player that has gotten the opportunity to do all these things,” Smith said. “I just give back where I can, to these kids, kids that may not get to experience anything like this in golf.”

Along the way, Smith has developed a deep appreciation for golf course superintendents and their teams. He has seen the essential role they play in making golf enjoyable and makes sure to promote their work when introducing new players to the game.

“Golfers just come out and enjoy the beauty of it,” Smith said. “It’s the golf course superintendents and their teams that give us these beautiful playing surfaces. Their drive, determination and teamwork to make each round the very best it can be is amazing. I’ve been involved in teams all my life.”

Smith is currently Gateway PGA Reach president, and for the last 15 years has hosted the annual Ozzie and Friends Gala and Pro Am, PGA Gateway’s largest fundraiser.

Growing up in the Watts area of Los Angeles, Smith played baseball at Locke High School and California Polytechnic in San Luis Obispo. He made his

major league debut in 1978 with the San Diego Padres. He was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1982 and

would help them to a World Series win that same year. His outstanding defensive play at shortstop and propensity for performing backflips would not only garner 13 Rawlings Gold Gloves and 15 trips to the All-Star Game but also earn him the nickname “The Wizard of Oz”. He retired as a Cardinal in 1996 and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002.

Upon learning he was the recipient of the Old Tom Morris Award Smith was in awe.

“When GCSAA shared the list of past recipients, I was overwhelmed, it is an incredible list and I am humbled to now be part of this illustrious group,” Smith said.

She previously worked as the membership and network coordinator for Florida Citrus Mutual and spent 10 years at Publix Super Markets Inc. in retail and pharmaceutical buying. Russo earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Science and Early Childhood Education from the University of South Florida in 2012 while raising a child fulltime. “That’s one of my biggest accomplishments—working fulltime and taking 2-3 classes per semester while raising my son.”

Industry Impact

The FTGA hired Russo as a marketing coordinator, handling database management, website updates, membership and events. When Executive Director Pete

Snyder retired, he recommended Russo for the association manager role, which she accepted in 2016.

“I’d always been on the backend, so going into the limelight and having to think about everything from a 30,000-foot view was a big challenge. I learned a lot and was definitely taken out of my comfort zone having to do more and different work within the association than I was used to, like finances and other bigger things,” she said. She began to sit in meetings with seasoned industry veterans and attend water management discussions. She praised her mentor Mac Carraway, who also moved from the citrus industry to turfgrass. Florida’s turfgrass industry leads the nation with $7.82 billion in revenue and over 173,000 jobs. The state is also ranked first nationally in sod production. The association, which is based in Lakeland and has been advocating and promoting the industry since December 1952, has 700 members. Russo explained that being a member-based organization, the

FTGA is the voice for its members at the state level. Members include lawn care operators, golf course superintendents, athletic field managers and sod producers, all of whom follow Best Management Practices (BMPs). Many also try to adhere to suggestions from the Audubon Society. Although no longer around, she recalled how Together Florida, a group that joined all agriculture entities, was a valuable networking group.

“We as an industry are depicted as the low-bearing fruit who litter the environment and don’t care about our water when, in fact, that’s the total opposite. It’s so important for us to try to do better for the environment. We’re always working with the University of Florida on research projects to help reduce any kind of waste and pollution. We live in Florida and we love our water too.”

Collaboration and Female Leadership

Russo believes industry collaboration greatly benefits the turfgrass sector. “Our board is currently working with the Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association (FGCSA) with crossindustry meetings because we are all fighting for the same end goal. Having other associations working together with the same goal will help all our members and sponsors to take our message to Tallahassee.”

Russo said it gives her confidence as a woman seeing an increased number of females taking roles in organizations across the industry over the past ten years. Russo said men are often the thinkers while women are the doers, which she sees as a positive change across the industry.

She noted several females running organizations, including Mary Hartney with the Florida Fertilizer & Agrichemical Association, Betsy McGill with Turfgrass Producers of Florida (TPF), Jennifer Bryan with the Florida GCSA and others. Russo shared that she often collaborates with McGill as they both run smaller

associations with smaller budgets.

“More women are stepping up and being heard. The association created a Leadership and Development Committee run by one of our female directors, Peyton Edwards. We’re trying to get more women involved and increase diversity by bringing more men in as well.”

Advice for Aspiring Women

For young women aspiring to pursue a career in the turfgrass industry or any traditionally maledominated field, Russo advised, “Follow your heart and do what you love to do. It doesn’t matter

if it’s male-dominant because you will shine. If it’s something that you truly enjoy, you won’t consider it work and you’ll get more gratification. In this industry, although it’s male-dominant, I’ve met a lot of wonderful people and created great relationships and never felt I was looked down on because I was a female. Just follow your goals and follow your passion.”

Patriot Golf Day® has become the largest grass-roots golf fundraiser in America – a joint initiative of The PGA of America and the USGA, Patriot Golf Day enlists the support of public and private golf facilities across the country. Funds support Folds of Honor, providing educational scholarships to the children and spouses of service members killed or disabled while serving in America’s Armed Forces.
