The MOTUL FIM Superbike, Supersport and brand new Supersport 300 World Championships –along with the rebranded European Superstock 1000 Championship – finish the European leg of the series here at the challenging and always extremely popular Jerez Circuit!

Britain’s Jonathan Rea made history at the last round becoming the first rider in the history of the series to secure three World Championships in a row. Only Carl Fogarty has won more titles since the FIM Superbike World Championship was first run in 1988, but Jonathan is getting close to his record of race wins, with 50 to Carl’s 59!

Also give a special cheer to local rider Ana Carrasco who, in Portugal, became the first female solo rider to win a World Championship road race!

Ever since the initial edition in the late 1980s, this production-based motorcycle series has gone from strength to strength over the last three decades with all the World’s leading twowheel manufacturers having competed in this championship, and many having also tasted

success on this globally applauded and recognised stage.

This success, as is so often the case, is the result of a great team effort and is following many years of hard work and good collaboration between all the parties involved. With this very much in mind, I want to offer huge thanks to our promoter Dorna WorldSBK Organization, our national federations, our organisers and volunteers, our sponsors, our riders, our teams, the media and last but most importantly you the fans.

On behalf of the FIM, I wish everyone involved yet another hugely successful and enthralling race here in Southern Spain!

LAVERTY

He venido aquí a hacer ensayos, y me lo conozco bastante bien.

computer game track. It’s old school and a real rider’s one! Normally, I would say that I think that my Aprilia should go well around here, but we are having some issues with rear grip. We had just about got it sorted, then Pirelli withdrew a particular tyre we got on with because of possible safety concerns. So we have had to start over again.

It’s a good track because it has a variety of corners, lots of hard braking and is a challenge to ride. It’s a bit slippery these days because the asphalt is quite old, but generally speaking I think it is a pretty safe track. It is usually more slippery in the afternoon than the morning and the surface can feel a bit slick when it’s hot. At the moment, the tyres work better in the cold, so a lot will depend on the temperature.

I think it’s a technical track and there is always something to do, but when you get it

crest. The bike has to be as close as you get to the rightside kerb and because you are leant over a lot it feels that your body and elbow are in the flowers!

It is a not a horsepower track, but you do need a bike that accelerates well, so you need a bike with good torque. Top speed is not important because I think the place was really built for 250s – I could ride a 250 aound Jerez all day long!

The bike needs to be stable because 1000cc around Jerez can be quite a handful. You also need a bike with good brakes because you will be using them a lot in a race. For example, for the hairpin at the end of the back straight, you go from sixth to first gear, with the brakes full on. It’s one of the longest times on the brakes at any track we go to.

A rise or fall in track temperature changes everything, so you need to use your expertise. If you are top of the timesheets in the morning and then the temperature changes, you’d be a fool to go out with the same set-up in the afternoon.

One of my favourite moments in Jerez was going around the outside of Marco Melandri in 2013. It was on the last lap and I went on to win. It was particularly sweet because he had almost forced me off the track earlier in the race and also because he was getting my ride the following year! WorldSBK

PREVIEW

World Superbike history was made at the last round in France as Kawasaki’s Jonathan Rea become the first rider in the history of the series to take 3 World Championships in a row!

KAWASAKI

Northern Irish rider Jonathan Rea has written World Superbike history by taking three consecutive World Championships. After moving over to the ‘green team’ in 2015 after a spell at Honda where he was consistently the fastest rider on the old Fireblade, there has been no stopping ‘JR’. In the 72 races so far that he has ridden for the Spanish Provec squad, who run the official Kawasaki Racing Team bikes, he has won 35, which is almost half of them, an astonishing record. It has been man and machine in perfect harmony for Jonathan and his ZX–10RR, as he has proved that he is one of the finest riders ever to grace the series.

On the other side of the KRT garage 2013 World Champion Tom Sykes has been fighting a season-long battle to replicate the runner-up Championship position he achieved last year. He has had a couple of victories this season but showed his true fighting spirit after his fiery accident in

and Italian Ayrton Badovini. ‘Bado’ came out of exile and into Supersport part way through last year winning in Malaysia and will be relishing the chance to show his class in the premier series again.

The Italian Puccetti squad started the year with Swiss rider Randy Krummenacher but he struggled to come to grips with

showed its potential by taking a sensational 2nd with it at home in Donington, while Australian Anthony West also put in some strong rides for the team with the bike.

The experienced Pedercini team started the season with former MotoGP man Alex De Angelis riding for them but, after a difficult season, rider and team decided to part ways, leaving the way open for young Italian Riccardo Russo to come in to show his mettle.

DUCATI

After the conclusion of last year’s series, which saw Chaz Davies win 7 of the last 8 races, including the double here in Spain, Jonathan and his ZX–10RR have moved the green goalposts a little, and it will be fascinating to see how Davies and the Ducati fare at Jerez this time around. If Chaz can set up

World Championship hopes may have gone for the year, but race wins and that crucial 2nd place in the title race are very much still on his agenda.

And don’t discount his new and former team mate Marco Melandri, the Italian having had 19 victories in the class before he moved back to Grands Prix. He has been keen to get back into the series in which he has thrived and showed on his return to WorldSBK with a brace of podiums at the first two events. Marco has adapted really quickly to the Panigale and is getting faster each time out, culminating with a superb victory at home in Misano. Looking back, Marco did the double here in 2014 on an Aprilia, so he knows how to get the top step of the Jerez podium!

The Italian Barni Racing team come back having retained the services of Spanish rider Xavi Forés who took his first podium in the series last year at this very track. The pairing will be keen to build on the experience of their year together and will be looking for even more success.

HONDA

It has been a very tough year for the Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team on and off the track. The Dutch Ten Kate organisation, who run the bikes, received their all-new for 2017 CBR1000RR Fireblade SP2 bikes just before the season started so they have been playing ‘catch up’ since then, which is hardly surprising with so much to learn. Aside from the lower half of the engine everything else on the Fireblade is new, smaller, more powerful and more effective. However, it just may take some time

to extract all the potential from the bike that it has so far locked within its colourful exterior.

Stefan Bradl had a best of 6th this year on the bike but struggled with its driveability and various stand-in riders have also found the same issue. While the German has had to curtail his season due to injury, Italian Davide Giugliano is scheduled to be back in the saddle for this round, alongside Honda test rider and All Japan Superbike contender Takuma Takahashi, who also rode the Fireblade in Portugal. Davide really came to grips with the bike in France and put in some strong rides.

BMW

The German manufacturer has moved from supporting two teams to just a singleton entry for 2017, but the Italian Althea squad was good enough to power local rider Jordi Torres to 6th in the title race last year. The S1000RR has enough power to be at the front but riders and

team are working hard to get it to be able to put its power down more efficiently in the turns. Jordi is a race winner in the class (the final event of the 2015 season on an Aprilia) and is a typical former GP rider who is inch perfect lap after lap.

Markus Reiterberger started the season on the German bike but his results were not what he or his team were expecting. So after a few races both sides agreed that he needed a break, with his place being taken by Naples rider Raffaele De Rosa.

YAMAHA

After a tricky debut season with the new Yamaha R1 in World Superbike last year, things have been looking more positive for the British Crescent squad. A year’s experience for both team and Alex Lowes has really paid dividends. The Briton was able to run with the leaders and take a great debut podium on the R1 at his home race at Donington, while a brilliant 2nd in France consolidated his strong 5th place in the title race coming here.

PREVIEW

ANTICIPO 2017

Michael van der Mark is on the other side of the Yamaha garage this year and has been keen to show his mettle. The former Superstock 600 and World Supersport Champion took a while to get used to his new bike but is getting quicker all the time as he adapts to the R1, and he was leading Race Two in Misano for much of its course. Podiums in the last two rounds at Portugal and France, respectively, have shown that he is getting used to running his R1 at the front of races. He comes here 6th in the Championship.

Although the Yamaha factory is officially only supporting the Crescent team, there will be another R1 out there this weekend. The Italian Guandalini

riders after Riccardo Russo left the team after Misano with his compatriot Alessandro Andreozzi recently taking the ride.

APRILIA

After a difficult 2016, Aprilia has been pushing hard in 2017, and is putting in as much effort now as it did in 2014 when it last took the title with Sylvain Guintoli. The main focus has been on the Britishrun Milwaukee team – which last year ran BMWs under the same banner. The squad receives factory support and while the extremely promising Lorenzo Savadori continues with the Italian marque (albeit in a different team), the big news this year has been the return to WorldSBK of Eugene Laverty. The Northern Irish rider won 11 of his 13 World Superbike victories on RSV4s, and he has done the double here back in 2013 when he last raced the Italian bike. Lorenzo, meanwhile, has been finding this year harder than last now

The Italian Ioda Racing Project continues with a singleton bike this time around for Argentinian rider Leandro Mercado who was 2014 Superstock Champion. The affable ‘Tati’ Mercado had a nightmare start to the season breaking ribs while motocrossing.

But, after missing the first two rounds, he came back at Aragón and raised many eyebrows in the paddock as he took 7th and 8th places. And then he showed real pace in England, once again challenging for the top 6 before leading Race 2 for a few laps at Donington from the reversed grid.

MV Agusta

The prize for the package that is fighting most above its weight is that of MV Agusta and Briton Leon Camier. The F4 has a history that stretches back a long way but it has been honed to make it as quick as ever, and this season has got the bike into the top 8 a dozen times, a remarkable achievement.

The tall Mr Camier has shown that even without the fastest bike on the grid, riding hard and consistently can still bring strong results. WorldSBK

WorldSSP

After an amazing comeback from being injured earlier in the year, 5-time Champion Kenan

Sofuoglu had just taken the Championship lead again when he broke his pelvis at the last round in France…

KAWASAKI

Reigning and five-time Supersport Champion Kenan

Sofuoglu suffered more than most in the early stages of the 2017 title race. A pre-season off-road tumble forced him out of the opening two rounds and then he was getting back up to speed in Spain when he was taken out in someone else’s accident, thankfully without serious injury. Would he ever get back to his old fast and dominating self? Well he was in a ‘class of one’ at Assen as he dominated proceedings on a track where the best always shine.

Then he won at Imola and again in the UK, then once more in Misano and then Portimão. So, after missing all but a few laps of the first three races, Kenan got himself up to the top of the table coming up to the last round in France. Unfortunately, an accident in practice at Magny Cours broke his pelvis and he will be struggling to get back in time for this race…

But nothing can diminish his record which he hopes he

will still get the chance to better. He has raced in World Supersport 123 times, with 82 podiums with 44 race wins (including the last two here at Jerez), 34 pole positions and 30 fastest laps… and that little matter of 5 World Championships.

The last two of those titles were with the Italian Puccetti team. Alongside him has been Kyle Ryde who rode no less than 3 different makes of bike in his debut full season in the class in 2016... But after a series of races with results far from what he and the team were hoping for his place has been taken by Australian Anthony West who had been riding the team’s Superbike.

Meanwhile another promising young rider, Michael Canducci, races for the same team under the banner of 3750 Puccetti Racing FMI. The fast Italian has support from his national series organiser, and is getting quicker race by race.

For the past two years elbow-scraping fan favourite Gino Rea has finished 6th overall in the series, firstly with a Honda and last season on an MV Agusta. The former European Superstock 600 Champion now rides for the Italian GoEleven Kawasaki squad and is looking for a strong end to his season after a start to the year that has gone

10 NACHO CALERO
32 SHERIDAN MORAIS

On the other side of Gino’s garage is 2012 Japan Superbike GP2 Champion Kazuki Watanabe, who was 3rd in the top-flight Superbike class last year in his homeland. He has had a tough learning year, but the 26 year old has plenty of experience in national racing and has had 5 starts at Grand Prix level.

The Spanish Orelac team has fought hard with the same squad for a 2nd year with updated ZX–6R bikes. Malaysian rider Zulfahmi Khairuddin almost won his home race last season but had to settle for 2nd, while both he and Spanish rider Nacho Calero have had a few events where they were both looking strong.

Also Kawasaki mounted is Lachlan Epis on his Response RE Racing bike. He had a tricky debut season in the class but he ended 2016 in the points and a top-ten finish at Phillip Island has been a good basis for his sophomore year.

HONDA

With Ten Kate taking a break from World Supersport to concentrate on their new Fireblade in WorldSBK, the focus on the CBR600RR this time around has been with the British PTR squad in its famous CIA Landlord Insurance colours. This year has seen the return to the team of Jules Cluzel who was runner up in the 2012 series for the same squad. Jules spent a year in Superbike and finished the year in the top 10 before dipping back into World Supersport with MV Agusta. Now back on the Honda again, Jules was immediately up to speed on his CBR but suffered wretched luck in the opening encounters, firstly getting caught up in someone else’s accident in Australia and then suffering an engine failure in Thailand. He was just off the podium in Spain, and took 3rd places at Assen and Donington and Portimão,

65 MICHAEL CANDUCCI

and a 2nd in Misano. Surprisingly, Jules has never been on the podium here at Jerez, so that is something he will be hoping to amend this weekend.

PTR is running 2 bikes this year in the main Supersport class, with Japanese rider Hikari Okubo back for a 2nd season, while Swedish racer and Ohlins test rider Christoffer Bergman has returned to the team for the final races of the year.

Spanish-domiciled British rider Kyle Smith has finished 5th for the past two seasons in the ultra-competitive series, taking a victory for Ten Kate in 2015 and two wins for PTR last year. This time around, Kyle has been with the Italian Lorini squad, who themselves had a race win last year with Ayrton Badovini in Malaysia. The bike has great speed and so does the still only 25-year-old Smith so expect some strong results… if Kyle can stay on track. He has led races this season already but then pushed too hard and crashed. He will be joined at this race by Italian Roberto Rolfo – who was on the podium here in 2013 on an MV Agusta. Roby raced with the Lorini team back in 2015 so he will feel at home with the squad.

Also look out for Christian Gamarino on the brightly liveried Evans Bros CBR600RR. The Italian has a lot of experience in the series now and the Italian-run Honda showed it could propel its rider to podium placings last year.

MV AGUSTA

American rider PJ Jacobsen has effectively switched roles with the aforementioned Monsieur Cluzel, swapping his Honda for the works MV Agusta which is finding the ultimate pace tough this year.

It is surprising to note that PJ has only converted two of his 13 podiums so far in to victories coming here, but he at least has two runner-up spots at this Spanish track in 2014 and 2015 on a Kawasaki and Honda, respectively. He and his F3 675 showed good pace in the first races of the year but he too has been blighted with technical issues.

The aforementioned Roberto Rolfo, a stalwart of the Superbike paddock for many seasons now, took a hard fought and brilliant debut victory in the class at Phillip

Island on his Factory Vamag F3. Roby was still joint 9th in the title race coming up to the last round in France, but prior to Germany his team decided to part ways with the Torinese rider, to bring in former Honda Supersport race winner and fellow Italian Lorenzo Zanetti.

YAMAHA

The big news for WorldSSP this season was the return of Yamaha with one works-backed and one works-supported squad. The manufacturer took the Supersport title in 2009, 2011 and 2013 and has had sporadic success since then, but now has a new bike to show.

After a year running MV Agustas the Italian GRT team returned branded as the GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team, which described everything perfectly.

Racing in his first full season in the class has been precociously talented Frenchman Lucas Mahias, the 2016 World Endurance Rider Champion. The 28-year-old former stuntman is another who has had a stop-start career so far in this paddock but looks set to reap some much-deserved rewards. He showed his and the new R6’s potential by almost beating Rolfo to the line in Australia and then taking his debut victory at Aragón. Good consistency kept Lucas close to the top of the standings prior to his home round in France and in Kenan’s absence he once again took his place at the top of the title race.

Federico Caricasulo is a highly rated 20 year old who was fast in Australia and then at the next round in Thailand took his debut victory in the class after a faultless performance. His enthusiasm has got the better of him on other occasions so far, though, and his exuberant crashes have cost him – and other riders around him – dear. But good news for Lucas and Federico is that they have both kept their rides for 2018.

Last year young Finnish rider Niki Tuuli had 3 wildcard rides, took 3 runner-up spots and 3 fastest laps on his Kallio Race System bike. This time the 21-year-old has been back for a full season but has struggled to register good performances after finishing on the podium in Thailand. However, all that was forgotten after he took a

brilliant victory at the last round in France.

The big news for this team in 2017 has been South African Sheridan Morais who got a surprise call up to partner Niki in the team run by former World Supersport rider Vesa Kallio –brother of GP rider, Mika. Experienced rider Sheridan, a stalwart of the many series around the world, rode better than ever in Aragón and was only just beaten for victory at the line, but it all came together for him in Germany. Riding a new-model Yamaha R6 for the first time, he took his debut victory in World Supersport, and from pole position at that.

out the way he planned but he has been back for a full season on a new Triumph and has been much nearer the front. An 8th at Assen and a 4th at home at Donington were hard earned and he will be relishing the chance to keep up that pace at the last two rounds.

Alex Baldolini prepares his own bikes and does it immaculately as his 8th in the series last year testifies. Always consistent and always fast, the former GP man has had a difficult year with a leg break in Thailand and a severely damaged finger that had to be removed, but he has now swapped to Yamaha bikes from MV Agustas, and will be hoping that will help propel him and his team up the grid.

TRIUMPH

Another rider to start 2016 on one bike and end up on another was former British Supersport Champion Luke Stapleford. He started last year on a Honda, missed the Spanish round and from Assen on raced his home-run Triumph 675 Daytona that he used to secure his British title. The results for the rest of the season didn’t work

Luke has a team mate this year in Stefan Hill but the young Briton has taken time in getting up to speed on the second British triple.

ESS

The European Supersport Championship (ESS) class continues within the main WorldSSP series for riders and teams confining their racing to the Europe. Estonian rider Hannes Soomer on the WILSport Racedays Honda has been the stand-out rider so far followed by Rob Hartog, who moved over from Superstock 1000 with his Team Hartog – Jenik – Against Cancer Kawasaki squad. The Dutch rider took a brilliant top ten overall in Portimão. Next up is Alessandro Zaccone, who raced a Kawasaki last year, on his works MV Agusta. Peter Sebestyen who went straight into World Superbike from the EJC now drops back into Supersport with a Kawasaki run by Team Pedercini. WorldSSP

This weekend in Jerez sees the climax of the already highly acclaimed debut season of the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship, a class designed to provide a world platform for young talent. Bringing in a whole host of new riders onto the world scene, riders have not only had the chance to showcase their ability but also to experience how a world racing series works.

WorldSSP300

The new feeder class has a minimum age of 15 and features a range of lightweight sports bikes. Any motorcycle classed as an A2 machine on the road in Europe will be allowed to race in the series. These bikes are becoming more popular with manufacturers, meaning they fit in perfectly with the productionbased series that already feature in World Superbike. All bikes are homologated by the FIM, and are subject to modifications to weight and rev limits by the SBK Commission, which will ensure the maximum possible parity between different models.

So far four manufacturers have homologated bikes for the WorldSSP300 series: Honda CBR500R, Kawasaki Ninja 300 (EX300ADF), Yamaha YZF-R3 and KTM RC390, with the first 3 providing bikes for the first season.

Pirelli is a partner in the series, and all riders entered in WorldSSP300 (chosen from almost 70 who wanted to be involved) have three sets of tyres per weekend to choose from. There is one compound available which will be the same for all the machines, except for the marginally heavier CBR500, which will have a slightly different tyre.

Showing that the equivalency formula has worked well as Kawasaki, Yamaha and Honda have all had victories tucked safely under their belts thus far. It was young Dutch rider Scott Deroue who wrote himself into

the history books of the class by being its first ever winner, a result he followed up with another victory at home in Assen. In the next races Scott didn’t have as much luck, as the Yamahas started to come good. And then at the recent Portuguese round, history was made again as Murcia rider Ana Carrasco on her ETG Racing Ninja won in Portimão. She thus became the first female motor-cycle rider to score a victory in a solo World Championship road race.

Yamaha took the new class very seriously indeed, and it all came good for the Halcourier squad in Imola when Marc Garcia took the honours, a result he followed up with some very consistent results to make second in the series prior to the French round. Italian rider Alfonso Coppola, on the SK Racing bike, won in Germany, and was leading the series prior to Magny-Cours even though his bike was excluded from Donington Park for a breach of technical regulations. Yamaha is offering factory support for several teams under the ‘Blu Cru’ banner. Spanish rider Daniel Valle was a close runner up in the first round of the series for the Halcourier Racing squad, while his compatriot team mate Borja Sánchez also put on a strong show finishing just off the podium. Those

two were well inside the top ten coming up to the last round. Another R3 rider who did well in the opening rounds was South African Dorren Loureiro, running eight in the title race coming up to the last race. He rides for the former World Supersport Championship runner-up David Salom who has three bikes entered in the class with his DS Junior Team. The other two are entered under the ParkinGo banner for the brothers Rovelli, Filippo and Edoardo.

Only a few teams are running Hondas with German Gabriel Noderer and Italian Alex Triglia on the Scuderia Maranga Racing machines, while reigning European Junior Cup Champion Mika Perez races for the WILSport Racedays squad. The Spaniard from Althea was a front-row starter in Aragón and was on the front row at Donington and later took the victory after Coppola’s exclusion. He then followed up that result with another win at Misano.

World Supersport S300 has provided us with some great racing so far in its debut year, and this season finale is sure to be red hot! WorldSSP300

The hugely competitive Superstock 1000 class has been back with a new title this year, the Superstock 1000 European Championship. One thing hasn’t changed, however, and that is amount of talent packed into the series providing the finest racing on bikes that are just a few horsepower shy of their full Superbike cousins.

STK1000

Raffaele De Rosa took the title at the last round of the series at this track last year on his Althea BMW, and this time around the team’s fast S1000RR is entrusted to former Superstock 600 Champion Marco Faccani who moved over from Ducati. Marco came on strong just before the summer break and took a debut victory in the class at Misano after the race was restarted. Meanwhile Althea is running a second BMW which is being looked after by former STK 1000 Champion Michel Fabrizio under the Althea MF84 banner. German rider Julian Puffe is in the saddle for them.

Federico Sandi on his Berclaz Racing Team S1000RR has put in some really strong rides, but the fast Italian has had more than his share of bad luck. His team mate Sebastien Suchet has also showed good form, too.

Kawasaki just bests BMW for the number of bikes entered in the class and has some very

strong contenders. Team Pedercini has a singleton entry with experienced Frenchman Jérémy Guarnoni. The 2010 Superstock 600 Champion has 4 wins in the 1-litre STK class and he will be looking to put together a strong performance this time around, as will Toprak Razgatlioglu. The Turkish rider won the 2015 STK 600 title for Puccetti Racing, with 5 victories from 7 races, and he took a brace of podiums last year for the team in STK 1000 before breaking his duck and scoring a dominant victory in Assen this season. He followed this up with another resounding win in England and then another in Portugal to get close to the top of the table. The supremely talented rider is likely to step up to Superbike next year with his Puccetti team.

Also look out for the Agro On-Benjan team which has great international experience in the saddle with Australian Glenn Scott (who moves over from World Supersport), Dutch rider Wayne Tessels and German Toni Finsterbusch.

Ducati lost the title at the last round here in 2016, but the Aruba.it Racing Junior Team is back with fast young Italian Michael Ruben Rinaldi leading the works squad, and

he rewarded the faith the Bologna manufacturer put into him by taking victory first time out in Spain and a runner-up spot at the next round before winning again at home in Imola and then again in Germany. He should have won at Misano as well in a restarted race, but still managed to take a 12 point lead into the penultimate round in France. Alongside him is former Australian Superbike Champion, and protégé of Troy Bayliss, Mike Jones, who took his debut podium in the class in Germany.

Aprilia’s current World Superbike star Lorenzo Savadori took the 2015 title on an RSV4 courtesy of the Italian Nuova M2 Racing squad. They took 3rd in the title race last year with Kevin Calia, and for this season have a rider who could be a real star of the future. As well as being runner-up in the 2016 Spanish Superbike Championship, Chilean rider Maximilian Scheib won the last round of the series last year here at Jerez in one of just two rides in the class and was on the podium at Donington, Misano and Portimão this season. He is teamed up with the experienced Italian Luca Vitali, and both have been well set in the top ten in the title race so far.

Yamaha came back strong with the PATA Yamaha Official Stock Team, as Florian Marino lined up for another season. The French rider suffered a horrendous injury at Assen last year which curtailed his year of competition but Yamaha kept faith with him, and he rewarded them with 3 podiums from the first 5 races. Team mate Italian Roberto Tamburini was runner up in the 2015 series with 3 wins but had a tricky year last season on the Aprilia. The Rimini rider continues his 3rd year in Superstock on his 3rd different make of bike in the class and was 3rd on debut on the R1 and 2nd in Imola. The R1 riders were both comfortably in the top four as the series landed in France for the penultimate round of its year.
