This is the third year that we have done the Love Where You Live issue. It’s an easy issue to do because we do love where we live. Our writers, photographers, and contributors all share that same sentiment over this special part of town. We have deep ties to this community and the land that is just east of the capital. Ashley and I have lived in East Austin since 2008, but generations of our family dating back to the 1800s have been part of this community. They now lay in the Oakwood Cemetery, but before that, they were uprooted from East Avenue as I-35 was constructed.

Over my lifetime, I have seen Austin change. But over the last six years, East Austin has changed rapidly. Businesses have either grown or moved on; many of our favorites have even gone out of business. It’s hard to keep up with the swift pace of this change. As we enter 2023, we see bigger buildings and more people moving into East Austin than ever before. Streets will change, small businesses will move out, and larger names will move in. What can we do? There is not much we can do except to embrace the change, frequent the small shops, and welcome any new neighbors with open arms. While losing some of our charm is hard, maintaining that neighborhood friendliness and caring for others can grow if we allow it. When we take the time to initiate conversation, to be friendly, to teach others what once was, and why we take pride in our community, relationships form, a mutual respect grows, and a sense of pride takes root. So we encourage you to keep being neighborly and continue helping those around you just as my great-grandparents did and likely as your great-grandparents did as well.

There are never enough pages to include all the unique businesses, buildings, artists, artisans, and leaders who make the Eastside a great place to live. But because a picture is worth 1,000 words, we have created a feature that is full of images to paint a beautiful and eclectic piece of art to capture the spirit of the Eastside. You’ll also discover some of our favorite roads, community staples that line those roads, and a few new places to experience in 2023. Over the years, we have told hundreds of stories about the Eastside, and you can read more about its history and current happenings at eastsideatx.com.

We look forward to 2023, and as we start our 8th year, we have some big plans and ideas. But we would also love to hear from you - our readers. If you have story suggestions or know Eastside movers or makers who want to support the mission of telling authentic stories, you can always reach out to us at info@eastsideatx.com. As always, thanks for reading!

Have a happy New Year!

William & Ashley Bowling

On the Cover

Our creative director, Will Bowling, designed the cover and the feature story. The cover itself has over 35 photos in it. This cover and each street collage feature took quite a bit of time to photograph and piece together. We hope it represents the Eastside that you know and love.

An Ode to an Incredible Austin Institution

East Austin's Public Libraries Go Far Beyond the Dewey Decimal System

For those of us who grew up as self-proclaimed bookworms, nothing was more thrilling than walking into a quiet, mellow library with a library card in hand. Tiptoeing through the endless aisles and skimming through the various titles until that one perfect book popped out was so gratifying. For those less inclined to the literary arts, the sometimes overly serious environment was downright dreadful. As adults with increasingly less time to read for leisure, we may not realize that libraries provide much

more than novels and reference books.

Libraries ensure equitable access to educational materials, provide leisure activities for individuals and families, facilitate community discussions, and foster creativity. These vital services are often overlooked, but we are here to shout it louder than any librarian would ever allow. The Austin Public Library (APL) is an outstanding force for good in the community. Our library system specifically offers career resources, internet access, language

accessibility resources, meeting rooms for local organizations, movies and music, homework help, printing services, and seasonal activities for all. The exceptionally broad range of resources meets the diverse needs of the community.

Eight of the 20 APL locations are located in East Austin, and they each have something special to offer kids and adults of all ages. Discover which is nearest to your home and check out a sampling of the diverse programming they offer throughout the year.

Did you know? The Computer, Career and Business Center at the Carver Branch offers classes to people who are starting a business, searching for a job, or simply looking to learn new tech skills.

Living with Art Learning to Curate Spaces with the Help of CoCollect

If your walls could talk, what would you want them to say? How do you choose to fill those big blank canvases that surround you every day? What are the implications of a print, some photographs, a few knicknacks? Consider how your space would change with, say, a Warhol, Picasso, or perhaps a work from some stellar local artist on display. Keli Hogseet, founder of CoCollect, challenges you to find out.

CoCollect is a fine art membership service whose goal is to allow more people to live with high quality original artwork. Members gain access to an ever-expanding collection of museum quality work that they can enjoy within their spaces and also have the option to keep, buy, or swap at the end of the year.

“For every household in the U.S. (of similar average income) that buys fine art, there are 37 households that do not,” Keli reports. “If you think about it, art is one of the last things we have to commit to,” she muses. “We buy a couch thinking ‘Okay, I’ll replace this in 10 years.’ [Art] is one of those decisions that feels like a much bigger commitment.”

It’s a decision that Keli herself—a former art student and creative director— struggled with when she and her husband purchased their home in Austin. She found herself wishing she could learn more about the art or an artist whom she liked before making a final selection. An idea sparked—a way to remove common barriers that prevent people from investing in art: cost, knowledge, commitment. “It was just like this little fire that kept growing and growing,” she says. “So I took that as a sign—just do it.” Thus, CoCollect was born.

Through CoCollect, members get an initial consultation with trained curators and professionals who educate clients about the collection and help them choose their works. Two weeks later, professional art handlers are dispatched to install the selections. Members also get a once-a-week informational text about their chosen works and also have access to in-depth background information via the CoCollect website.

Three tiers for art! CoCollect offers three different membership tiers: Local, Collector, and Patron, each tier offering different levels of access. For example, Patron members have access to the coveted blue-chip works, while someone more interested in discovering local art could opt for the Local membership.

Built in partnership with museums and private collectors, the collection currently boasts over 450 works. It includes renowned artists like Robert Rauchenberg, Alexander Calder, Stanley Whitney, Richard Serra, and Agnes Martin. It also features well-known and emerging Texas-based artists like Adrian Armstrong, Cruz Ortiz, Denise Prince, Paloma Mayorga, and Donald Judd, who founded the Chinati Foundation in Marfa.

As an Austin native herself, Keli was adamant about creating a platform for local artists. “The city’s seen so much growth…I just want to make sure that we support the amazing talent that's here.” Keli plans to expand CoCollect outside of Austin and hopes to tap into local talent in other cities as well. Keli affirms, “Supporting where we are was just as important to us as giving members the opportunity to live with something like a Warhol or a Picasso.”

Got Game?

Austin’s Only Game

Show Experience

Got a competitive family? Have a score to settle? Need a team building activity? Whatever the reason, GameOn! ATX is the game show arena to host a little friendly competition.

“We wanted people to play games here that they couldn't play somewhere else,” Jakeb White, GameOn!’s Arbiter of Fun explains. “It’s not something you could do at home.”

For 90 minutes, two teams face off and work their way through three rounds of vintage-inspired game show games under the guidance of an

affable host who elevates the stakes from that of a typical game night to primetime television levels. To warm up, contestants are pitted against each other in “Survey Squabble” where teams appoint a representative to step up to the buzzer and provide answers within a predetermined category (think Family Feud). This is followed by “Whirly Words,” a game where team members are tasked with spinning a giant wheel for points, providing they can guess letters to build a mystery word correctly (read Wheel of Fortune). Finally, the two teams cap off the competition with a heated game of chance called “Cosmic Drop” – a game that resembles Plinko from The Price is Right – where someone drops a puck down an extra-large peg board hoping that it tumbles into a high-scoring slot.

The combination of intense suspense and the smiles and smirks of competition light a fire under Jakeb, who hosts a large number of these games himself. Expect quippy remarks and wordplay to accompany the incorrect answers that teams volley back and forth.

Jakeb never intended to be an Arbiter of Fun; the fun just found him. After graduating from UT Austin, Jakeb held many positions, including furniture salesman and high-rise window washer, all while pursuing improv comedy on the side. However, he says that when he saw the GameOn! job posting online, “I immediately fell in love as soon as I walked in, and they hired me on the spot.” After a stint as a part-time staff member, he quickly became the company’s first full-time employee and now co-owner.

Since he stepped onto the stage, GameOn! has continued to expand, adding additional content ratings for games as well as supplemental competitions for avid button smashers and trivia fiends.

“We are in the process of adding more games,” Jakeb reveals. “We've got a new one that we are designing inspired by Press Your Luck. We've got another one that we have already started testing, and we should be rolling it out pretty soon, based on a win, lose, or draw type game…like Pictionary.”

Even without the new suite of games, players can shake things up by selecting from a range of game ratings. Content ratings span PG, PG13, or R levels, and Jakeb recommends PG-13 for most groups, especially for younger players and work teams. However, he encourages groups that are up for it to select an R rating, which he says is a racy adult game full of laughs.

Whatever version is played, be sure to bring your own refreshments; no food is allowed in the game room, but the space is BYOB. And be sure to bring enough for the hosts, too. “In fact, if you would like to leave a tip in the form of alcohol, most of our hosts are fine with that,” says Jakeb with a grin. “Of course, regular tipping is welcome, too.”

East Austin is rapidly changing, making it seemingly impossible to index every business, tell every piece of history, and outline every pop culture moment that defines this beloved portion of the city. There are, however, some key facts, figures, and locales that have made their marks.Think of this as the study guide you would clamor to get your hands on the night before a challenging midterm. Historical & Happening

On the surface, this block of East Austin is a foodie’s paradise. With several award-winning restaurants popping up the last few years, as well as a plethora of long-time staples and a variety of food trucks, it is easy to see why this section of East Austin is a local fave. But lingering just below this tasty façade are plenty of historic stories that make East Austin what it is today.

A cornerstone of this area is the Downs Mabson Field. Still in use, this community baseball field managed by the Austin Parks Foundation today hosts the Huston-Tillotson Rams, among other local teams and organizations. The field once hosted Austin’s Texas Negro League baseball team: Austin Black Senators. This legendary team touted talented players such as Willie Wells, and the field itself was graced by giants such as Satchel Paige, Hilton Smith, Toni Stone, and Joe Williams. Today, these heroes are honored by vibrant mosaics, designed by Reginal Adams, that stand tall and welcome players and fans as they enter the newly renovated ballpark.

On East 11th Street, the Historic Victory Grill has been a dependable landmark of the area since 1945. This burger joint and blues club is responsible for putting East Austin on the music map, hosting acts as varied and dignified as James Brown, Ike and Tina Turner, Billie Holiday, Chuck Berry, and Etta James over the years.

• Pio Renteria (former city council) did work to get rid of motorized boats in Town Lake in the 1990s. This not only raised values of the Holly neighborhood tremendously, but it also gave rise to dragon boat racing and other man-powered watercrafts. • Commercial square footage is more expensive in East Austin than in Westlake. EAST

Artsy & Homey Cesar Chavez St.

This area is another hub of nightlife and culture, though slightly less rowdy than other city hotspots. With delicious food, including a ton of creative plant-based options that pay homage to the city’s mighty taco obsession and bars that lack pretension and retain the charm of a good dive, this is an energetic street that maintains a familial, welcoming feeling. With a plethora of family-owned businesses lining the street, this area remains a special part of the city.

Be sure to visit Juan in a Million and Mr. Natural for a laidback lunch at a family-owned joint or one of the many food trucks in the area for an al fresco experience. Tex-Sueno and Vegan Nom are two spots that should not be missed.

Long Play Lounge East is a great hideaway for eclectic local music happenings. Wander in on any given night to be delighted by everything from indie duos to Beatles cover bands to jazz jams. During the day, pop into Women & Their Work to peruse their displays dedicated to uplifting and amplifying women artists, or stop by Duck Camp for a truly unique shopping experience. With several other galleries and live music spots, this area shines.

In 1993, the street formerly known as First Street was renamed to honor the life and legacy of César Chávez, a hugely impactful union organizer and Hispanic rights activist.

Understatedly Cool

This stretch of East Austin is laid back and simply fun, an ideal place to take the whole family out to dinner and still enjoy the atmosphere or post up for a cocktail or coffee (or both) after work with the family dog underfoot.

Thunderbird is a long-standing coffee spot and local hang. Serving the Eastside since 2006, this favorite is a welcoming place to get any day started. For years, the fluffy pastries at S-H Donuts have been pleasing Eastsiders as a morning stop on their way to work or a weekend delight to enjoy. Mi Madre’s first opened its doors in the 90s and has been serving Eastsider’s Tex-Mex for decades. Our favorites include their migas or breakfast tacos served alongside a cinnamon café de olla. The adjacent School House Pub is a perfect low-key way to cap off the night.

For those looking for something new, a coastal seafood restaurant from the minds behind Suerte recently opened in the former East Side Café location. Este is a high-end experience, perfect for special occasions or those who are highly invested in the local culinary scene.

Butterfly Bar, attached to beloved local theatre The Vortex, is a particularly inviting spot to enjoy a craft cocktail and a bite to eat at the Italian food truck Patrizi’s. Or visit Oddwood Brewing for family pizza and pints night and old-school gaming fun, or hit up Batch for a kolache and a cold one and a game of bocce ball in their backyard.

It’s hard to pick just one of these favorites to visit on a given day—so don’t! Enjoy sampling each of these local faves all year long on this low-key street.

16. What is the name of the speakeasy mezcal bar hidden inside School House Pub?

A. School’s Out B. Madre Mezcal C. Techo Mezcaleria

17. What homestyle community staple has graced Manor Road since 1998?

A. Hoover’s B. El Chilito C. Dai Due

18. What barbecue joint once occupied Salty Sow’s current location?

A. Rollin’ Smoke

Authentic & Original

Long before Juneteenth was a federally recognized holiday, East Austinites have gathered on foot, by horseback, and in low riders to parade down East MLK Street, celebrating the day with drill teams, bands, and plenty of dancing.

East MLK is the place to not only take out-of-towners who would like an iconic Austin mural selfie but also for those who would enjoy the authenticity of the city. It’s dotted with true Capital City classics.

Grabbing a coffee at Bennu or a smoothie from JuiceLand, both long-time staples, shouldn’t be missed before heading over to the Butter Half mural for that coveted candid shot. While there, it’s always tempting to grab a bite at Sour Duck or Austin Daily Press. Each restaurant captures a different element of the unique spirit of East Austin.

Chill whiskey bar, The Wheel, is an ideal place to sip on a drink with friends. For those looking for dessert, neighborhood newcomer Zed’s offers residents New Zealand-style ice cream, that is highly customizable, as well as a selection of beer and wine to complement their sweet treats. Wander through Rosewood Park with ice cream in hand or admire the iconic architecture from John Chase that adorn East Austin’s only historically designated neighborhood, Rogers Washington Holy Cross, with longstanding mid-century homes lined up on the streets that branch off East MLK.

The Face of Radical change for the salon industry

Lo Shabino set out to open her first salon, Strange Bird, with the goal of bringing a more eco-conscious, supportive, and mindful experience to the salon industry. With the long-term health of both her clients and stylists in mind, she went against the industry standard and created a salon committed to using only non-toxic styling products and low-toxic, high-performing color to change the narrative that you need to use harsh chemicals to get a beautiful end result.

In 2022, Lo expanded and opened Strange Bird Salon East, the first chemical and fume free salon in the state. As a hair-cutting-focused space using only completely clean products, the environment feels and smells more like a day spa than a typical salon.

The salon also throws quarterly community events to raise money for various local organizations, inviting other stylists to come participate, and truly living up to their “community over competition” ethos.

The name Strange Bird is a nod to the chemical-free corner of the industry that is demanding something better for the future of stylists and the overall client experience, and we are here for it.

Moving Made Fun

Mash Movers, founded in 2016 by local musician Seth Whaland (Literature & Tres Oui), was started to fill a niche. Austin already had a sturdy foundation of talented musicians, but now, more people than ever were moving into town. Seeing an opportunity to provide a vital service to the community and also provide a flexible job for working musicians, Mash Movers was born.

Keeping a light-hearted attitude while moving, which is a stressful time for many, is nearly as important as the strength to carry a couch to the 3rd floor, or the packing skills to keep an apartment's worth of boxes and furniture secure while navigating traffic on I-35. Fortunately, Mash Movers has found a group of movers with the skills to do all these things - plus they’re playing in some of the best bands in town!

Based out of 78702, but serving all of Austin and beyond, it’s like the Mash crew is going on a little tour every day, meeting and helping new folks along the way. They take care of your things the way you would your own. Their easy process, combined with their trustworthy team, makes for a smooth moving experience.

The Face of Holistic Skin care

April Cook, Holistic Skin Therapist • LE

Welcome to The Skin Whisperer

As a former runway and print model, April Cook had a backstage look at the harmful marketing tactics implemented by the beauty industry and the devastating emotional and mental damage they create as a result. She saw that these standards of beauty had nothing to do with self-love or health— quite the opposite actually. Heartbroken that many of her friends resorted to harmful interventions to keep up it became her mission to see restoration in health and beauty mindset. From this experience, she developed a passion to help people heal their body image. Her goal is to shift her client’s focus from perfection to achieving the healthiest version of themselves instead.

In 2018, April founded Skin Whisperer with the mission to help clients tackle the internal root cause of any beauty obstacle and treat the surface as well. The name, Skin Whisperer, is a nod to the Yaqui Indian teachings passed down from her great-grandfather to her mother to her. She strives to implement fully holistic practices with non-invasive technology to remedy any skin concern for clients from all backgrounds with various skin types. As a Holistic LE and Advanced Body Contour and Skin Tightening Certified technician, she gives clients results-driven face and body contouring. For clients who are over the Botox, fillers, painful beauty experiences, and liposuction, April will empower you with a unique, new way to #loveyourtrueself.

The Face of Longhorn Imaging Centers

It seems like just yesterday my business partner and I sat down to discuss what it would take to open a new radiology business in the Austin area. I never imagined that the conversation about opening one imaging center in 2014 would have led us here today, with 8 radiology centers across central Texas.

I am often asked, “What has made Longhorn Imaging so successful, and how have you been able to grow so quickly?” To be honest, the answer is quite simple. Our level of service is what sets us apart. Given that Central Texas has some of the largest radiology companies in the nation, I knew it was a competitive market. The only way Longhorn Imaging could be successful would be to provide a different type of imaging experience. That is exactly what we did!

We offer spa-like settings, provide a less stressful experience, and we cater to each person’s individual needs. At the end of the day, we measure our success by our client’s satisfaction, not by how large we have become. I am a firm believer that when you do the right thing for the right reasons, success will follow.

Whether it’s an MRI, CT, Ultrasound, X-ray or testing for a possible concussion/traumatic brain injury, Longhorn Imaging is here to provide patients the best experience with the latest imaging technology. We also offer competitive private pay rates, payment plans, free transportation, and many other services to make medical imaging as painless as possible.

The Face of Healing Movement

Shannon Rashap

M.A. Ed., LMT, CPT

Welcome to Chulel

Corrective Bodywork & Pilates

In 2010, Shannon Rashap launched her practice in East Austin, a year after the sudden death of her father which set off a period of intense, chronic pain. Formerly an avid athlete, after this traumatic experience, she was no longer able to process her stress in the same way, so she started training in different therapeutic modalities to heal her musculoskeletal imbalances and address how she embodied her grief. As a result, she was able to return to her usual activity level, spurring her passion to teach these powerful tools to her community.

Chronic injuries have multiple root causes; including movement compensation from an old injury (often before the age of 18), scar tissue (including tattoos), a visceral (digestive, reproductive, liver) component along with personal stress-holding patterns.

Through a variety of hands-on and movement techniques, Shannon helps her clients shift these compensation patterns and educates them on how to move their bodies with more balance and ease so they can realize their athletic goals.

The George Washington Carver Museum & Cultural Center – Connecting East Austin’s Past & Present

Intricate lace handkerchiefs, a pin cushion bejeweled with mid-20th century hat pins, a pair of 18th century shackles – at first glance, these solitary objects populating the main exhibition at George Washington Carver Museum represent individual moments in the lives of community members who have come and gone. Put together in chronological order, they serve as markers on a path tread by members of the Black community through the history of East Austin.

Celebrate the Season at the Carver

This season, join the family fun at one of the Carver Center’s three annual holiday events: Festival of Trees, Santa Special, or Silver Bell Social.

The Man behind the Name

George Washington Carver was perhaps the most prominent Black scientist of the early 20th century and is responsible for inventing hundreds of products made from peanuts. He chose to advocate the humble peanut because of its ability to enrich soils that had been depleted by cotton production and contributed to the self-sufficiency and sustainability of even the poorest farmers of the era.

“T

he museum and cultural center is a space where we can teach people about Black history and art through exhibits,” says Carre Adams, curator/culture and arts education manager. “We started with the artifacts and built a narrative around that.”

The past indisputably influences the lives of those in the present, and the Carver invites Austinites to dive deep into their relationship with the community of today. Between the center’s four long-term exhibitions and three rotating art galleries, there is ample opportunity to wile away an afternoon absorbing a curated selection of pieces that open a window into the culture that helped build, and continues to construct, this city.

“We’re educating and creating dialogue,” Carre explains. “And we’re also a space where people can gather.” On any given day, visitors, resident artists, and neighbors mill through the halls of this city center, either creating or consuming a variety of community-driven projects. From a children’s center and all-purpose classrooms to a performance theatre and dance studio, this multi-level complex offers facilities for a diverse range of community needs. The galleries and public rooms often house activations from creative individuals who are otherwise unable to access resources.

While the modern facilities in the Carver work to preserve and celebrate the contribution of Black people to the culture and history of this nation, visitors should not limit

their trip to this one edifice. Outside the museum, a sculpture garden leads across the lawn that often serves as a hosting ground for festivals and outdoor markets. Flung farther afield on the grounds is a teaching garden project that offers classes and supplies the produce used in the hors d’oeuvres at many of the Carver Center’s events.

There is also the Genealogy Center located onsite, sandwiched between the modern center and the Carver Branch of the Austin Public Library. Originally the location of the Carver Museum when it opened in 1980, today the Genealogy Center specializes in assisting African Americans in tracing their familial roots.

Through telling stories about the local community and tying those individual threads into the larger quilt of community consciousness, the Carver Museum and Cultural Center allows Austinites to both access the memories of the past and create new ones through a number of community art projects and activities.

Make Sushi at Uroko

Chef Masazumi Saio and Takehiro Asazu of Uroko bring a unique sushi experience to Austin. Though their sushi can be enjoyed at their casual counter service during the week or at their weekend omakase, we suggest rolling up those sleeves and getting those hands dirty at their sushi making class. They have two levels of classes: the beginner course where guests learn how to make sticky rice and a few of the most popular sushi rolls and the intermediate course for the more advanced sushi connoisseur.

Inspirational Women's Event 2022

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for an evening of celebration and connection presented by HarperSage and EASTside Magazine. Our 6th Annual Inspirational Women’s Event couldn’t have happened without you. Whether it was your first year joining us or it’s become an annual tradition, we are so grateful for our readers and supporters who showed up on October 27 to commemorate the release of the Inspirational Women’s Issue.

This year, we partied the night away at The Cathedral. The 1930s church turned vibrant art and event venue offered attendees plenty of room to spread out while mingling. We listened to soulful music by local artist Amethyst Jonquille, sipped on cocktails, and snacked on light bites, and reveled in much needed time together.

We are so grateful to HarperSage. The evening would not have happened without this local woman-owned brand partnering to share the

community spirit! We also want to say thank you to The Booth by JMP photobooth, to East Side King, Oseyo, and Bao’d Up for the delicious food, and to BOXT, Island Getaway Rum, Austin Beerworks, and Austin Cocktails for the incredible drinks. We truly enjoyed partnering with everyone who contributed and made this amazing evening come together so beautifully.

We loved meeting all of you, and we already cannot wait for next year’s event!

Playful Poise “T

An Urban Respite

Eight years in the making, a sensitively renovated property lies hidden in plain sight on Bolm Road. Its creatively curated spaces for living and working are modest and serene, reflecting the character of its creator.

he most important thing about this house is that it isn’t finished,” laughs Alan Gonzalez, homeowner and principal architect at Aguacate Studios. “It will never be finished,” he says with a swirk. The poetic refrain is all-too familiar among architects who design— and perpetually refine—their own homes, as Alan has done since he purchased the property in 2014.

At that time, the 1950’s bungalow sat on an oversized lot, its well-worn, 1,020 square foot main structure historically sheltering 10 or more family members at once.

After gutting the home completely, Alan took measures to respect and retain elements of its original character. By preserving the overall form, structure, and window placements, the lot’s prevailing breezes continue to naturally ventilate the home with minimal need for air conditioning.

The exterior walls were reclad in an assortment of surplus wood from other projects, narrow planks arranged vertically and varied to avoid homogeneity. Its large swaths of blackened, burnt Shou Sugi Ban complement the site’s lush foliage to almost camouflage the home from the

street. Notably, Alan avoided imposing security fencing, opting to subtly define the boundary of his property – a move in keeping with the history of the land.

Inside, calm stucco walls set off the original vaulted pine ceiling in what is effectively one large space, bathed in light and shadow from two strategically placed skylights. “There are no full walls or doors to my bedroom,” Alan explains. “I wanted the passage to squeeze you instead, so you feel the transition from common space into a private one.”

Back outside, a generous detached garage serves as an office, studio, and workroom, and an outdoor bathroom and utility closet are cleverly hidden by walls adorned with long grasses that rustle in the breeze.

Alan continues, “Spending my summers growing up in beach towns and cities in Mexico, I loved the movement and texture of the grasses used for the roofs. Using it on the walls adds such a nice contrast to the other materials, and it actually has great insulative properties.”

Taken holistically, the property feels quiet, restorative, natural, and earnest: an endangered ethos in a rapidly developing city.

Natural Effects

• Alan grows pears, peaches, avocados, and more, thanks to its excellent soil on the property.

• Custom windows fabricated in Mexico open fully to integrate the home with its surroundings.

A Weekend In

The City of Neighborhoods Toronto Before You Go...

Toronto is the largest city in Canada and is known by many names: Hogtown, ‘Tee dot,’ or ‘Tee oh’ (standing for Toronto, Ontario). Most significantly, Toronto is known as the ‘City of Neighborhoods,’ as more than half of the almost 3 million residents were born outside of Canada, creating a unique cultural travel experience.

Day One

Start near the epicenter of the city with Royal Ontario Museum, one of the most-visited museums in North America. Don’t miss the dinosaur exhibit and the world’s largest collection of fossils. The crystal architecture erupting from the sidewalk is incredible. Eat at their cafe, which has guests dining inside the crystal itself.

Head downtown to Art Gallery of Ontario. At 480,000 square feet of space, it is one of the largest museums in North America, and visitors go for the interior architecture as much as they do for the art. Don’t miss the Group of 7 exhibition area to experience some of Canada’s most beautiful watercolor landscapes. Make sure to swing by their coffee shop to warm up and

enjoy the large windows for a peaceful break.

The museum is just blocks away from Chinatown with tasty dinner options. Strolling along Spadina Avenue, Swatow and Juicy Dumpling are a couple of casual dining favorites. For the adventurous spirits, consider the Kensington Market food tour, which organizes a foodie adventure across half a dozen restaurants in the area.

Day Two

Get above the clouds with a visit to CN Tower. One of the seven modern wonders of the world, CN

Tower is the largest freestanding structure in the western hemisphere. On a clear day, onlookers can see the mist of Niagara Falls, which is almost 100 miles away! Each level provides a different viewpoint, and be sure to walk across the glass floor. Finish the sky-high adventure by grabbing lunch at the 360-degree rotating restaurant.

Head over to Nathan Phillips Square for ice skating. A short walk from there is Eaton Centre, one of the largest indoor shopping malls, home to over 200 stores and multiple food courts. Grab a pre-game snack here and head to a live

game of your choice. The City of Toronto boasts seven franchise sports teams: hockey, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, football, and basketball.

Day Three

Commune with nature today and plan to explore and hike through High Park, the largest park in the city. There’s a zoo, and the paths lead directly to the lakefront trails which offer cross-country ski. Head up to the Runnymede area on Bloor Street, known for its Eastern European cuisine, and fill up on pirogies and meat pies.

Getting Around: No car is required; Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) has an excellent system of easily navigated underground subway lines and aboveground streetcars.

Forecast: It’s going to be cold, with or without snow, so bundle up and come prepared with layers and thermal underclothing to make the adventures more comfortable.

Things to Know: Over 200 ethnicities and 150 languages and dialects have been identified within the city! So don’t be surprised to hear many unknown languages while traveling around the area.

Fun Fact: The Toronto islands are the only urban car-free community in North America. Catch a ferry to the islands to experience some of the best cityscapes of Toronto.

Con Mucho Amor

El Chile crafts relaxed Tex-Mex fare for the neighborhood.

For almost two decades, the bright aqua and lemon-colored El Chile sign has graced Manor Road as a familiar beacon for a small Tex-Mex restaurant with a covered patio and a cozy, standing-roomonly bar. However, in recent years, that neighborhood stalwart has seen a move, an upgrade in ambiance, a change in ownership, and also a few changes to the menu. El Chile still serves some dang good enchiladas and margaritas though.

60 EASTside Dec/Jan 2022/23 find more at eastsideatx.com

Justin Audibert, El Chile’s director of operations, stepped into the role in 2021, just after the restaurant changed hands and moved into its new location. But he still remembers the old location fondly, “We really haven't changed much from the old group. We want to keep everything the same at the core.”

While many of the familiar staples like enchiladas and queso retain their prideful place on the menu, new offerings have been added to the mix, including a brunch menu featuring summertime-in-a-glass cantaloupe margaritas, as well as classic and comforting chilaquiles verdes.

However, Justin’s personal favorite is a nod to his own roots growing up by the Gulf of Mexico. “The red fish dish is great; getting it grilled with that chili lime sauce is really, really good.”

The fish is laid on chiltepin lime salsa, topped with a cucumber carrot slaw, and accompanied by charred parmesan green beans to create a crescendo of flavor in each bite. As a Texas transplant, he admits that the barbacoa taco also holds a special place in his heart.

However, if enchiladas are a TexMex must, the chicken tinga is an option that will certainly satisfy.

Whether complemented by the deep, chocolatey notes of a mole rojo, dressed up in a poblano crema sauce, or simply smeared with a traditional verde salsa, this classic dish is sure to warm the soul. But don’t forget to order a side of tortillas. Both the flour and corn options are made inhouse daily and are a decadent vehicle to consume some of their scratch-made sauces and salsas that are delivered to every table.

El Chile’s happy hour is also worth visiting. At the low-key neighborhood joint, seats are almost always available, and the margarita options are enviable. From a classic frozen blend to a spicy watermelon option, these Tex-Mex essentials are made with hand-squeezed limes and achieve just the right balance of citrusy sweet and salty tequila.

The new stewards of this old staple still approach Tex-Mex cuisine with care and mucho amor. From the friendly welcome at the door to the warm atmosphere that pervades, having a bite at El Chile is as familiar as it ever was, and it is something that nearby neighbors look forward to again and again.

New Year, New Goals Out with the

Old, In with the New

Every new year offers a new beginning—an opportunity to get closer to achieving goals, quitting old habits, and reinventing ourselves into the person we hope to become. After the trials and challenges our community and nation faced over the last three years, 2023 has the advantage of allowing our hardearned growth and resiliency to shine.

Why not start this year by resolving to honor your body? Please consider this list and the three accompanying recipes as a launching pad to help you determine what’s right for you in 2023.

• Skip sugar for a week. Passing on the caramel syrup in a latte or the after-dinner dessert will not only help you avoid the sugar crash and hormonal hangover, but it just might also be a kickstart to learning to live with less on a regular basis.

• Cut back on the cocktails. Drowning sorrows in wine and beer creates the extra pounds to prove it. Excessive alcohol only fuels our communal depression.

• Drink more water. Imbibing more H2O not only helps the body on a cellular level, but it has also been

shown to help with weight loss and brain and heart function. Not a fan of the clear stuff? Try infusing water with fruit, vegetables, or fresh herbs to add flavor without synthetic chemicals.

• Eat at home. Challenge yourself to use mostly locally grown produce to guarantee you’re cutting your carbon footprint and supporting local growers. Bonus: local produce is usually lower in pesticides and herbicides. If you want to be a real locavore, grab some meat while you’re at it.

• Cook more from scratch. The cold, hard truth is we don’t know the long-term impact of many of the preservatives and additives in much of our food system, especially the processed goodies we love while watching Netflix. Cooking from scratch often means cutting those

additives in half and reducing the chemical cocktail in our bodies.

• Pack a lunch. Well over a third of the calories the average American consumes come from lunch. When we fail to plan ahead and pack a nutritious lunch, we’re stuck with whatever the office cohort is door dashing or whatever drive-thru is nearby. Try the Mediterranean bowl recipe for an almost cook-free lunch option.

• Eat a more nutritious breakfast. Most of us eat breakfast, just not the kind that will help us achieve our health goals. Try the overnight Chia Chai Oats recipe for a quick option you can eat while walking out the door.

This year will likely not be pain-free but one thing is for sure. After the last three years, we’re a hardened, resilient group of individuals who will be hell to reckon with.

Something's Brewing

More than Roasts & Toasts

An Eastside institution eyes a new era after building community in an ever-changing neighborhood.

The last nine years have brought plenty of growth to the once-sleepy intersection of East 5th and San Marcos streets. Single family homes on narrow lots have yielded to glassy multifamily developments, a promenade of brunch spots, light rail, and a gleaming Whole Foods Market. Amidst the churn of development, The Brew and Brew has quietly grown and sustained a community of devoted regulars, celebrating its 9th year in business in October.

For nearly a decade, patrons enamored with an expansive list of hyper-curated beer and coffee brews have cozied-up in the 1,400 square foot neighborhood shop, the former home of Progress Coffee.

“Progress is part of the origin story,” says Grady Wright, one of the shop’s owners, taking a break from a shift behind the counter. “They were one of the first new wave coffee shops on the Eastside that predates us and everyone else.”

While Brew and Brew has become a beloved constant in an era of change, Grady is quick to share his plans to keep pace with the growth of the neighborhood. Just launched, an expanded menu offers more than beans and hops. A full bar menu features cocktails that are creative and simple, including perhaps the best espresso martini in Austin.

On weekends, catch breakfast, lunch, dinner, or late-night food. Recommendations range per palate. Breakfast fans will

enjoy a variety of bagels and hearty breakfast sandwiches. For dinner, try the “RB’s Beef Sandwich,” a perfect bar pairing and homonymic homage to a well-known sandwich chain.

Already endeared to many as a neighborhood spot much greater than the sum of its parts, The Brew and Brew stands poised to continue its run as an Austin favorite for years to come.
