ATLANTA SWIM ACADEMY LOOKING BACK AND

MOVING FORWARD

As Atlanta Swim Academy celebrates its 30th anniversary, Vice President Brad Grzelka takes stock of the many changes that have happened over the years, especially in the past year at the facility. ASA made a decision in 2014 to launch its highly successful SwimFit Club, an aquatic program that teaches swimming techniques but is not as competitive in terms of meets and practices as the regular swim team. “Our research proved beneficial,” says Grzelka. “Out of our 250-plus swim team members, about 50 percent of them joined the SwimFit program that bridges the gap between lessons and a competitive team.” As a result, the ASA Swim Team has had one of its most successful years ever. Jenny Kordon, head team coach, attributes this milestone to a more focused team effort as the competitive swimmers worked together toward a winning season. Swimmers in the SwimFit program receive the same athletic training as team members, but do so in an environment that emphasizes fun and exercise rather than competition. As ASA moves forward, the facility’s goal is to provide a place for all levels of swimmers to improve and excel. The facility has just started a Baby Splash class for 3-6 month old babies to be accompanied by a parent. This class is FREE. The current class is full, but there is a waiting list for future classes. More than 1800 participants are enrolled in swim lessons at ASA. Those enrolled in lessons can easily transition to the SwimFit program. “Because the same individuals who teach swimm ing lessons are also SwimFit coaches moving up into the SwimFit program is an easy transition for our swimmers,” says Kordon. New this year, ASA plans to offer SwimFit and Swim Team programs year-round for its swimmers. “A year-round program allows swimmers to better maintain their fitness levels,” explains Grzelka. “Rather than the typical slow start at the beginning of each season, swimmers who are in the pool year-round continue to improve their strokes and times with no seasonal lapses.”
