May Sky and Land Be One (oil and paper on canvas, 40x30) by Richard Garrison

Greene County Pastoral BY James Applewhite

I hope that Mary Alice Philips who lived by the river will pick new jonquils for the casket. Maybe L.G. Newcomb whose four-room house stood in a bend of the creek road will come with a fist of forsythia. I wish the girls and boys I knew, from creekside and mule lot, from rosy broom sedge knolls, could start past edges of pine woods. I think their singing and sighing might rustle with the needles and hush like the dove wings alighting on light wires On hills far away in the country. Their preachers might come looking pale and fresh-shaven from the white inside the wooden churches.
