Though diapers are an essential need for babies, there are currently no public safety net programs for diapers. They are not covered by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or by Women, Infants and Children (WIC) benefits. Since an adequate supply of diapers for a single child can cost $100 per month, diapers become a cost many families can’t afford.
The CNY Diaper Bank works with 47 partner agencies in the area to distribute over 185,000 diapers to more than 3,000 local babies and toddlers each month. The organization has distributed over 1.2 million diapers in 2022 alone.

Madison County Tourism, the county’s official tourism promotion agency, announced that Matthew Urtz, Madison County Historian, is its 2022 Champion of Tourism. “Since becoming Historian more than a decade ago, Matthew has been championing tourism in Madison County,” said Truman Hartshorn, president of Madison County Tourism. “Whether he’s promoting events or working with organizations to create programming, Matthew has shown that tourism needs history and history needs tourism. And we’re proud to name Matthew our Champion of Tourism for 2022 in recognition of the significant impact he has had on Madison County’s tourism industry.”
“We have a number of great museums that people visit but there are a lot of additional ways that history impacts tourism that people may not realize,” said Urtz. “History-centric events like Hop Fest and the Lorenzo Driving Competition, genealogy and more are just some of the reasons why people visit our communities, spend their money and help support our economy. And I’m honored to receive this award on behalf of our county’s History professionals and volunteers.”
Urtz began his tenure working with historical sites to help build their capacities and sustain endeavors. In recent years, Urtz has built and promoted a monthly list of Madison County’s events and created History Where You Eat, which worked to bring business to local restaurants on a slow night by pairing a meal with a historical presentation and a tour of the facility. Since 2013, Urtz has documented the stories of Madison County’s veterans and presented on the role Madison County played in World War II. More than 20 videos full of veterans’ stories and Urtz’ talks are archived on the County’s website for all to study.
Urtz also worked to analyze and document items from the 109year-old time capsule pulled from the county courthouse, gathered items for a new time capsule and organized a tour for two Congressional representatives, accounts of which have been shared on the floor of Congress. In addition, Urtz currently serves as the first vice-president and Region 9 Coordinator of the Association of Public Historians of NYS.
Urtz noted that no two days are the same for him. “I like that. And I also love that I work with lots of different county departments within Madison County and a number of people, organizations and businesses throughout the county,” he said. “And I’m so proud that our efforts have caused many to become interested in local history and tell me ‘I had no idea that happened here.’”

The All-State experience begins with a music teacher, his or her student and an accompanist spending countless hours preparing a NYSSMA Level VI solo which must be selected from repertoire lists in the current NYS manual. Last spring, over 6,500 sophomores and juniors from across the state of New York prepared for All-State evaluations in the hope of being selected.
The concerts will be held in the magnificent Eastman Theatre and the University of Rochester which has been Rochester’s preeminent performance space since its opening in 1922. This historic space has hosted the world’s greatest musicians and conductors.

The Leatherstocking Council, BSA recently announced Abby Lukach has been hired as its assistant scout executive.
She was previously with Longhouse Council, BSA based in Syracuse where she served as development director.
“We are very excited Abby has joined our leadership team,” said Matthew Dziedzic, Leatherstocking Council board president. “She has achieved an impressive level of success while working with volunteers and our local youth programs will benefit greatly from her skill set and experience.”
Lukach has had a passion for Scouting since her days as a Venture Scout in the Longhouse Council where she earned the Silver Award in 2009. In 2012 she earned a bachelor of professional studies in recreation, adventure Travel, and Ecotourism at Paul Smiths College then in 2014 a master’s in management of Leisure Services at SUNY Cortland.
She then began her career with the Boy Scout of America in January of 2015 with Longhouse Council as a district executive. In 2018 she was promoted to senior district executive then development director.
As a development director she managed all the councils fundraising initiatives including the well-known SCOUTPOWER event.
As assistant scout executive Lukach will work in tandem with the scout executive, Ray Eschenbach.
She will give leadership to field operations to support and grow the Scouting movement in the Leatherstocking Council.
