JACOB OLSEN, CEO/Director Vojens Speedway Center

Jacob Olsen
CEO Vojens Speedway Center

In a week, it will be exactly 50 years since my father, for the very first time, was able to invite the audience to an excellent race at Vojens Speedway Center, which created traffic chaos in large parts of Southern Jutland.
With his first world championship in 1971, and the realization of the vision that Denmark should have a speedway stadium of international format, Ole Olsen has not only given Danish speedway a huge boost, but also passed on a legacy.
A legacy that, with Erik Gundersen, Hans Nielsen, Jan O. Pedersen, Nicki Pedersen and many other riders, has made Denmark one of the most winning nations in the 102-year history of speedway sport.
Thank you is only a poor word, but still.
Thanks Dad.
At this weekend’s milestone, we can start looking forward to the coming years in Danish speedway, and I think there are signs of an upcoming boom.
We have a large and broad talent group of riders and the next generation is well on its way. Our team SES – Sønderlylland Elite Speedway and the Danish league have increasing audience numbers, and just this season we have experienced large and well-executed events at the Danish Championship final in Brovst in northern Jutland, and recently at this year’s Grand Prix Challenge at Moldow Arena in Holsted.
Vojens Speedway Center is not alone.
And we were certainly not alone on Saturday May 24th. When over 5,000 spectators enjoyed our new initiative SES Festival, with a number of Danish top bands and artists.
Our stadium is perfect for a music festival, and we are happy to explore the possibilities of creating other types of events.

You can already mark Saturday, April 23th – 2026 - when SES Festival will return.
But the many officials and my team and I are not alone in building the foundation for a great experience at Denmark’s national speedway arena.
Our many sponsors and partners have been a crucial prerequisite. Haderslev Municipality – led by Mayor Mads Skau - the international motor union, FIM, Warner Bros Discovery Sports, the Danish Motor Union, Team Denmark and Vojens Speedway Club, also have crucial roles in relation to the fact that we are all gathered here tonight.
All our volunteer employees from numerous clubs and associations in the local area should also get a big pat on the back. Because without you, there would, quite simply, be no World Championship Grand Prix and other events.
The same can be said about Deluxe Homeart and Claus Poulsen, who manufacture the world’s best LED candles, and who once again are the title sponsor of tonight’s meeting between the world’s best speedway riders.
A warm thanks must also go out to you, who are standing - or sitting – and reading these lines right now.
It’s great that you’re here, and I hope everyone has a wonderful evening of fun and good conversation, and of course some spectacular action out on the track.

With loving speedway greetings
Jacob Olsen
CEO Vojens Speedway Center

Laura Manciet
FIM Speedway World Championships Director

Welcome to the 2025 Deluxe Homeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens and thank you for being part of the action as we celebrate 30 years of Speedway GP.
The competition’s launch in 1995, masterminded by Vojens’ own founding father Ole Olsen, gave riders the opportunity to compete for the FIM Speedway World Championship over a series of rounds, handing the sport’s biggest stars the chance to shine and battle for the crown over a whole season – rather than just in a one-off FIM Speedway World Final.
The format offered greater exposure in the media and on television for our riders and their sponsors, as well as chances for more fans around the world to watch the sport’s biggest names live in their country or city. Now Speedway GP is an integral part of our sport, and we conclude the latest chapter of its epic story here with the final round of the 2025 season.
Vojens Speedway Center could not be a more fitting location to round off the SGP series – especially as the club celebrates its 50th anniversary. Since it was opened in 1975, Vojens has established itself as Denmark’s national speedway stadium and has staged some of the biggest nights in our sport’s history.
This weekend builds on that tradition as three world champions will be crowned over two exciting days, starting with the FIM Speedway Under-21 world champion in SGP2 on Friday. For the first time ever, SGP4 has been granted full world-championship status by the FIM, and the FIM SGP4 World Championship for our 11-13-year-old stars takes place on the Vojens junior track on Saturday morning. Developing the sport’s pyramid has been a key part of Warner Bros. Discovery Sports’ vision for Speedway GP, and we are delighted to see the SGP4 class, inspired by our global ambassador Tony Rickardsson, take this historic step forward.
The SGP4 event will be followed by the conclusion of what has been an incredible title race between Polish history-maker Bartosz Zmarzlik and Australian sensation Brady Kurtz. Bartek has the chance to match New Zealand great Ivan Mauger and Tony Rickardsson’s all-time record of six world titles. He also hopes to become the first
rider in history to win four in a row. Meanwhile, Brady has the chance to become our first rider to be crowned world champion in their debut season since Hans Nielsen won the inaugural Speedway GP world title in 1995.
We say a special thank you to Jacob Olsen and everyone involved in the Vojens club for their hard work in delivering what should be a great two days of racing. The club was part of that very first Speedway GP series 30 years ago, but one thing that has certainly not changed is the key role all of our local organisers across Europe play in making FIM Speedway events possible. We thank them all for their support over our past four years as global promoter.
Following this action-packed weekend, Torun’s Marian Rose Motoarena brings the curtain down on our season with the FIM Speedway of Nations – the sport’s ultimate test of team riding – from September 30 until October 4.
I hope you enjoy the action this weekend and as the 2025 season reaches a full-throttle climax!
Laura Manciet
FIM Speedway World Championships Director

I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome to the 2025 FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship, which this year is being contested over 10 rounds staged in seven countries, all within an incredibly intense time period of just over four months.
Without doubt one of the most dramatic disciplines on the FIM calendar, SGP races are short, sharp and spectacular and require 500cc machines that are highly-tuned and incredibly powerful. Brakes are not an option, and the quick-moving, action-packed format makes it a fantastic spectator sport.
Such a specialised sport calls for a very special type of rider, and the man everyone wants to beat is once again Polish superstar Bartosz Zmarzlik, who will be attempting to become the first rider in the sport’s history to win a fourth consecutive FIM Speedway World Championship crown this year.
If the 30-year-old is successful, he will take his title total to a sensational six in seven seasons and join fellow speedway legends Tony Rickardsson and Ivan Mauger at the top of the all-time winners’ list. But standing in Zmarzlik’s way are 14 other permanent riders representing nine countries, underlining the truly international nature and global appeal of the sport.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Speedway GP format, which replaced the old one-day FIM Speedway World Finals for the 1995 season. Since then, the SGP series has been the pinnacle of our sport, allowing riders to showcase their skills around the world on a more regular basis and bringing our fans closer to the action.

It’s fantastic to see that both Wroclaw and Vojens are part of this 30th-anniversary season after they were part of that original Speedway GP series in 1995. Three of our FIM Speedway individual world champions will be celebrated at the famous Vojens venue across the weekend of September 12 and 13, so that’s set to be a fantastic climax to the SGP season. Along with our Speedway GP and FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship (SGP2) gold medallists, the first-ever FIM SGP4 World Championship winner will be crowned, with the competition for 11-13-year-olds elevated to world-championship status for 2025.
This year also sees Manchester’s National Speedway Stadium join the Speedway GP calendar, and we congratulate Prague on a record-breaking 31st Speedway GP event this year. Marketa Stadium also plays host to the FIM Speedway Youth World Championship (SGP3) for the sport’s under-16 250cc stars.
This year’s FIM Speedway action concludes with FIM Speedway of Nations in Torun, Poland from September 30-October 4, which sees 15 countries competing to become 2025 world team champions as Great Britain defends the FIM SON trophy they won in Manchester last season.
On behalf of the FIM, I would like to wish our series promoter Warner Bros. Discovery Sports, all competitors, local organisers, national federations, FIM officials, teams, sponsors, media and, of course, the passionate fans who are the lifeblood of the sport, a safe and successful season of exciting racing. Do not forget to keep up to date with all the latest news at www.fimspeedway.com.
Jorge Viegas
FIM President

‘‘ON
BEHALF OF THE FIM, I WOULD LIKE TO WISH OUR SERIES PROMOTER WARNER BROS. DISCOVERY SPORTS, ALL COMPETITORS, LOCAL ORGANISERS, NATIONAL FEDERATIONS, FIM OFFICIALS, TEAMS, SPONSORS, MEDIA AND, OF COURSE, THE PASSIONATE FANS WHO ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THE SPORT, A SAFE AND SUCCESSFUL SEASON OF EXCITING RACING’’

KONGESTART

Three riders from the same nation on the World Championship podium has only happened/

The historic individual World Championship final in 1988 still stands as a beacon in the story of Danish sports and Vojens Speedway Center. Relive the most beautiful Sunday in the history of the red-and-white speedway together with the legendary protagonists
By Poul Ferdinand

the closest World Championship races ever and a Danish demonstration of power that no nation has since managed to repeat.
Although the Danish riders had dominated the sport throughout the 80s, and crushed all rivals, it was unthinkable until 1988 to race a final in Denmark. But Ole Olsen had great ambitions and, helped by the massive Danish success, the former three-time world champion had finally managed to get the individual World Championship final in Vojens. This kind of thing was otherwise reserved for well-known tracks such as Ullevi in Gothenburg, Katowice and the legendary Wembley. But Olsen was stubborn.
’For all the Danes who were there, it was a huge scoop that we could race at the Vojens Speedway Center. You could say that we came home. It would have been completely unreal to be able to race a World Championship final in front of a Danish audience,’ says Erik Gundersen, who together with Hans Nielsen was the big draw.
With two world championships each - Gundersen in 1984 and 1985, Nielsen the following two years - the duo were indisputably the two fastest on a speedway bike in the world. The fact that they were also fierce rivals, dividing both speedway Denmark and the press into

to pass the enormous caravan of fans on the way to the stadium.
’When we drove towards Vojens, it made a big impression on me, with all the cars going the same way. All that buzz and hum. As we drive into the stadium, we can feel the atmosphere. There are people as far as the eye can see, and I got goosebumps in my stomach.
While Erik Gundersen had ended his collaboration with Ole Olsen, reigning world champion Hans Nielsen arrived with the world’s most winning speedway rider of all time, Ivan Mauger, as an advisor. He too only had his eyes on his eternal rival and title number three.
On the other hand, none of them seriously counted on their younger national team colleague Jan O. Pedersen, even though he had won individual World Championship-silver two years earlier.
’Erik and I both had huge ambitions and were very focused on beating each other. Before the race, none of us had Jan on our minds that much,’ remembers Hans Nielsen.
It would turn out to be a miscalculation, because the Funen-native had big plans to get out of the shadow of the stars.

’I was still the apprentice compared to the two, but I came to win. I had won silver in 86, and in 88 I was ready to race for the gold. I had a sports psychologist come in during the winter, where I had worked on my head. He was also in Vojens, says Jan O. Pedersen.
If there are two things that go together in speedway, it’s Vojens and rain. And the weather gods didn’t hold back this Sunday, even though Danish sports history was on the agenda. In the hours leading up to the start, it was down to the wire, while Ole Osen, riders and spectators nervously leaned towards the clouds. Fortunately, higher powers showed their mercy. The rain stopped at the last minute, and thanks to an enormous effort, the track was more or less ready for racing.
’It was damp at the bottom. So some decisions had to be made about the setup. It had to be hit right in the ass from the first heat. They had promised more rain later, but there was just an open window of a couple of hours, where the sun also peeked out,’ recalls Erik Gundersen, who easy won his first heat.
In the next heat, both Hans Nielsen and Jan O. Pedersen were in action on the difficult surface. First Nielsen went off, and in the restart, it was Pedersen’s turn to taste the shale..
’We kept falling off because it was so slippery. I got completely soaked myself. The day started terribly because it was so wet’, recalls Jan O.
Pedersen, who eventually had to be relegated to second place in the heat by Nielsen.
The fifth heat featured the duel that the spectators had paid to see. Gundersen versus Nielsen. But the duel was a one-sided spectacle with Erik as the clear winner.
‘I felt like I was melting into the bike and the way it was set up. My confidence was at its peak. I was in a lovely zone, and I felt free on the machine’, says the heat winner, who by this heat win took a huge step towards title number three.
The defeat took a heavy toll on Hans Nielsen.
‘Mentally it was hard to be behind the whole evening. Unlike the grandprix of today, the old one-day finals were all or nothing. The pressure was perhaps even greater on Erik, because he had won his heat over me and could decide it himself’.
In the following heat, Jan O. Pedersen threw another point to Sam Ermolenko, but from here the Danish trio made a clean sweep until heat 17, where Erik Gundersen in his white suit held the innermost position with a red helmet, while Jan O. Pedersen was ready on the outer lane with a yellow helmet.

’In the pits people speculated whether I had made an agreement with Jan. We were teammates in Cradley Heath. I had gotten Jan to England, so people wondered if he would stay behind me. Then I would get gold with the maximum. and he would still get bronze,’ says Erik Gundersen about the conspiracy theories that spread like wildfire. But they remained theories.
’Among others, my promoter and someone from Gundersen’s team had been over to see if I couldn’t finish down at the back. A journalist from newspaper Ekstra Bladet also came and thought that I should let Erik win. But it wasn’t in my nature to ride out and lose. I didn’t ride for any of them. I rode for myself,’ says Jan O. Pedersen about those dramatic minutes and continues:
´If I won my last heat and Hans lost one more point, we would be tied. And if Erik lost two, we would be tied for third. I think everyone else had overlooked that. That I actually still had a chance to win’.
Erik Gundersen noticed that.
‘I made a fantastic start. At the end of the second turn I thought, ‘Shut up. I am flying, and I’ll be world champion in three laps’. But then this little guy from Funen suddenly came around me. Jan was a small, narrow rider, and even though I was close, I couldn’t catch him’, Erik admits.
On the other side of the barrier, Hans Nielsen could breathe a sigh of relief,
‘I was afraid I had thrown away the title. So I was quite surprised when Jan passed him. Erik was a huge favorite, but something happens when the pressure increases in the last heats’.
Immediately after, Nielsen won his last regular heat, and then the ultimate decision was made.
A re-race for the gold.
‘This was the ultimate showdown. It was the perfect ending, because most people had come to see either Hans or me become world champion’, says Gundersen.
Before the re-race, a draw was made for the track positions, so the two gold contenders were lined up in front of each other like duelists in a western movie.
For the rest of the heat, a desperately chasing Hans Nielsen had a clear view of the printed red smile on the back of his rival’s suit.
”I didn’t focus on that much. I tried to catch him, but after that start I knew he was gone,” he says.
Shortly afterwards, the world’s three best riders were able to take the podium – all with Dannebrog on their stomachs – cheered by the wild crowd, who completely ignored the rain, which had returned.
’Of course, the other finals were also fantastic. It was something special to win my first World Championship at Ullevi, but the night when I became world champion in front of a Danish audience in Vojens, I will never forget,’ says Erik Gundersen 37 years later.
’I couldn’t have known it that day, but the final in Vojens is the climax of my career. It’s the pinnacle of pop to win the World Championship in your own backyard, where it all started. It is and will be the greatest experience I’ve ever had in the sport’.
The following year he had to end his career after a horrific crash during the final of the team world championship in Bradford.
Although both Hans Nielsen and Jan O. Pedersen later won the individual world championship titles, that magical Sunday in Vojens was the highlight of Danish speedway’s heyday, and also heralded the end of an era that may never return.

The atmosphere was intense when Gundersen chose the flat and won the draw, but when he had to choose the track, he had doubts. The wrong choice could crush his World Cup dream. So he left the draw, even though it was against the rules to consult his older brother, Preben. In the end, the choice fell on the outer track I yellow.
’When the rope goes up, I do a king-start, come in on him and get him pressed a little down in the first turn. The track is starting to get blank, and he is standing across. There are still four laps to go, but now it was up to me to drive it home,’ explains Erik Gundersen about the moment when the gold was placed.
But the riders, spectators and speedway fans around the world who followed the final on TV will never forget it.
Just ask Jan O. Pedersen.
’If I were to make a film, it would be about that Sunday in 1988. That afternoon had everything. Ole Olsen, whose track we raced on. Three Danes in the first places. Re-race for the gold. How could it be bigger?’ Tre kører fra samme nation på VM podie er kun sket/ 1937 (USA) 1949 (GB) 1961 ( SWE ) og 1988 (DEN).

Poland’s first multi-time world champion and now a five-time winner of the Speedway GP World Championship, Bartosz Zmarzlik is making a career out of rewriting the history books.
Zmarzlik was schooled at his local club Gorzow, racing with Polish great Tomasz Gollob in his early years. But the pupil is now the master.
Since joining the series full-time for 2016, Bartek has amassed an astonishing eight FIM Speedway World Championship medals in nine years, winning gold in 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024, silver in 2018 and 2021 and bronze in 2016.
He won an incredible five rounds from the nine he raced in 2023 and sealed gold with an unforgettable win at Torun’s Marian Rose

Motoarena – a victory that saw him match Aussie legend Jason Crump’s all-time series record of 23 wins.
He smashed that record with victory at the 3P Logistics FIM Speedway GP of Sweden - Malilla on June 15, before extending it with wins in Riga and Torun in the closing rounds of 2024.
Zmarzlik cemented his spot among the sport’s greats by sealing his fifth Speedway GP world title in Vojens on September 14 – becoming only the second rider in history after New Zealand legend Ivan Mauger to win gold three years in a row.
He bids to match Mauger and Swedish great Tony Rickardsson’s all-time record haul of six world titles this weekend. Can he become the first rider in speedway history to win four gold medals on the bounce?

Great Britain hero Robert Lambert has enjoyed a rapid rise in recent years. After winning the 2020 Speedway European Championship to qualify for Speedway GP, he ended his country’s 32-year wait for a world team title at the 2021 FIM Speedway of Nations Final in Manchester.
Norfolk’s finest made it two FIM Speedway of Nations world titles in three years in Manchester on July 13, 2024, before storming to his first-ever Speedway GP victory at the Deluxe Homeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark –Vojens to guarantee his place on the Speedway GP World Championship podium.
He then saw off Swedish rival Fredrik Lindgren to seal silver on a tense night at the final round in Torun. Only the third Brit to win a medal in the Speedway GP era bids to end 2025 on a high.

Sweden’s Fredrik Lindgren has cemented his position as his country’s top rider since returning to the World Championship full-time in 2017 – culminating in his surge to the Speedway GP silver medal in 2023.
The double Swedish champion has also stormed to three Speedway GP bronze medals in 2018, 2020 and 2024 to establish himself as a regular worldtitle contender and defied a battle with long Covid to remain in the world’s top five every season since 2018.
Lindgren has scored more Speedway GP World Championship points, made more Speedway GP appearances and raced more Speedway GP heats than any other member of the line-up. He is also now Speedway GP’s all-time top-scoring Swede.

Great Britain hero Dan Bewley wrote his name in British speedway folklore when he ended the nation’s 15-year wait for an FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff winner on August 13, 2022.
The big results just kept on coming as he won the 2022 FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Wroclaw on his PGE Ekstraliga home track just two weeks later, before adding 2023 FIM Speedway GP of Sweden - Malilla gold to his trophy haul.
Bewley wrote his name in GB history when he helped the Lions to FIM Speedway of Nations world-title gold in Manchester in October 2021 – their first world team title since 1989.
He made it two world team titles in three years for GB at the 2024 FIM Speedway of Nations - also staged on his British home track in Manchester on July 13.
Victory at the 2024 FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain - Cardiff, which saw him lead an historic one-two with Robert Lambert, sparked his late-season surge to a career-best fourth place in the Speedway GP World Championship.
After a famous Speedway GP win on his home track in Manchester in round four on June 13, can he win his first medal in 2025?

His success on the world stage saw him awarded Slovakia’s prestigious Crystal Wing in March 2024 –a prize that honours heroes from every walk of life in his homeland.
Vaculik made an unforgettable World Championship debut, when he won the 2012 FIM Gorzow Speedway GP after replacing the injured Jaroslaw Hampel in the meeting.
He ended 2024 a nine-time Speedway GP winner after racing to his third straight FIM Speedway GP of Czech Republic – Prague victory in his adopted home event, as well as topping the podium in Wroclaw on his way to fifth place in the 2024 Speedway GP World Championship.

Aussie ace Jack Holder was handed an unexpected Speedway GP debut season in 2022 following the suspension of Artem Laguta and Emil Sayfutdinov.
It was a chance he grasped with both hands as he starred for his country in the 2022 FIM Speedway of Nations Final at Vojens, helping the Roos land their first world team title since 2002.
Holder then stormed to a fantastic fourth place in the 2023 Speedway GP series, beaten to bronze by only two points.
Having missed 2023 round seven in Riga due to a broken wrist, it’s very likely Holder’s crash at the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup Final in Wroclaw weeks earlier cost him a place on the podium in a year when he reached five SGP rostrums.
Holder has long been a regular visitor to Speedway GP events, after supporting older brother Chris in the pits for many years.
But now the world No.6 has taken the spotlight in his own right and he opened his 2024 season by claiming his first Speedway GP win in Croatia.
This saw the Holder brothers make history as the first sibling duo to both win an SGP round. With Jack winning the Orlen Oil FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Warsaw on May 17, the Holders are now also the sport’s first multi-time SGP winning brothers.

Despite a difficult start to his SGP season in 2024, Lebedevs raced into form, becoming Latvia’s first-ever Speedway GP finalist in Vojens on September 14.
He then secured his spot in the 2025 Speedway GP series a week later by winning his second Speedway European Championship in Chorzow on September 21.
Now Latvia’s Speedway GP pioneer bids to take his career to another level and reached his first-ever SGP podium, finishing third in Landshut on May 3. He backed it up with a popular third place in front of his home crowd in Riga on August 2. Can he make more history in 2025?

Max Fricke inked his name into Australian racing history when he helped his country to 2022 FIM Speedway of Nations gold; their first world team title since 2002.
That wasn’t his only golden moment of 2022 as he also topped the podium at the Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland - Warsaw in front of over 50,000 fans at PGE Narodowy.
The 2016 FIM Speedway Under-21 world champion made his Speedway GP debut in 2020. The season was a baptism of fire, but Fricke still fought his way to a solid 10th place, claiming his first-ever win at FIM Torun Speedway GP round seven.
Fricke built on that by finishing a career-best eighth in 2021, before finishing 13th in the 2022 series. Despite a better year in 2023, taking ninth spot and reaching six semi-finals in 10 rounds, Fricke was forced to make do with a first reserve spot for 2024.
He still featured in eight rounds, finishing 11th in the standings, before securing an instant Speedway GP return for 2025 with fourth place at the 2024 FIM SGP Challenge in Pardubice. Can he reach the Speedway GP top seven and secure his spot for 2026?

After receiving a Speedway GP wild card from the SGP Commission, he raced to 12th place in the Speedway GP World Championship in 2024, reaching three semi-finals along the way, as well as leading Germany to an historic fourth place at the 2024 FIM Speedway of Nations Final in Manchester on July 13 - the country’s best world team result of the 21st century.

After years doubling up between Britain’s top two leagues, Jason Doyle made his FIM Speedway Grand Prix debut in 2015. The Aussie quickly made himself at home and launched a breathtaking title charge in 2016.
Despite winning four Speedway GP rounds, Doyle’s championship dreams were cruelly dashed when he crashed out of the penultimate round in Torun. But he hit back in epic style in 2017.
Racing most of the season with a broken foot couldn’t stop Speedway GP’s man of steel, who stormed to an unforgettable world-title win, sealing gold in front of an ecstatic home crowd in Melbourne – winning the FIM Australian Speedway GP too for good measure.
Doyle raced to eighth place in the 2023 Speedway GP series. But his victory

at the FIM SGP Challenge in Gislaved, Sweden secured his spot in the 2024 championship.
He started the 2024 season in breathtaking style, taking second spot at the opener in Croatia, before topping the podium in front of around 50,000 fans at the Orlen FIM Speedway GP of Poland - Warsaw to end six and a half years without an SGP win.
Sadly, his campaign was cut short after he suffered a torn rotator cuff in a crash in a British Premiership match in King’s Lynn last May.
Fortunately for Doyle, a permanent wild card from the SGP Commission ensures continue his Speedway GP journey in 2025. Despite missing this year’s Prague round due to a hip injury, the Aussie battled his way to fourth place in Malilla to fight his way back into the mix.

Triple Danish champion Anders Thomsen is back on the Speedway GP stage for 2025 after a year’s break, and he returns in red-hot form.
His progress was slowed by injuries that ended both his 2022 and 2023 seasons early, with Thomsen losing his spot in Speedway GP at the end of 2023.
But he bounced back in fine style in 2024, winning his third Danish Championship and racing into the top 10 in Poland’s PGE Ekstraliga averages for Stal Gorzow.
Thomsen crowned a strong season by finishing second at the 2024 FIM SGP Challenge in Pardubice to secure an immediate return to Speedway GP for 2025.

Aussie ace Brady Kurtz’s rise began when he won the Australian Championship at the very first attempt in 2016. After racing for his country in the 2016 FIM Speedway World Cup, he returned to the national side with an inspirational performance as the Roos won 2024 FIM Speedway of Nations silver in Manchester.
He ended the year by topping the podium at the 2024 FIM SGP Challenge in Pardubice. This earned Kurtz his chance to shine on the Speedway GP stage for the first time in 2025 – and his impact has been extraordinary as he takes the world title fight to Polish icon Bartosz Zmarzlik.
After starting the 2025 Speedway GP series with final appearances in Landshut, Warsaw and both Manchester rounds, Kurtz raced to his first-ever SGP win in Gorzow on June 21 – getting the better of rival Zmarzlik on his boyhood track.
He then triumphed on his old Swedish home track in Malilla on July 5, before winning on his Riga debut on August 2. Kurtz made it a fantastic four in a row with victory at his Polish club Wroclaw on August 30.
This success guaranteed him the Speedway GP silver medal for 2025 and saw him match Tony Rickardsson’s all-time record of four Speedway GP wins on the spin – set in 2005. Now Kurtz chases more history in Vojens. Can he become Speedway GP’s first-ever debut-season world champion?

NEW DANISH champion Michael Jepsen Jensen last appeared in Speedway GP in 2018 but makes a hotly anticipated return to the sport’s biggest stage after reviving his career with a big move in 2024.
When Aussie star Jason Doyle’s season was ended by injury, Jepsen Jensen was the man tasked with replacing him at Polish club Grudziadz. He grabbed the unexpected opportunity with both hands, taking the fight to the world’s top riders, helping the club reach the play-offs. Back home, he also played a key role in Slangerup’s Speedwayligaen title triumph.
This success came six years after he famously won the 2012 FIM Speedway World Cup, FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship and FIM Nordic Speedway GP at Vojens – all in one incredible season.
Since being part of the 2015 Speedway GP series, Jepsen Jensen has largely been absent from the world stage. But all that changes this weekend when he returns as Deluxe Homeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens wild card after winning his first Danish Championship this season.
We may not have seen the last of MJJ at this level. If 2026 SGP qualifiers Andzejs Lebedevs or Dominik Kubera finish in this year’s Speedway GP World Championship top seven, Jepsen Jensen will join them in next year’s series after taking fifth place at the FIM SGP Challenge in Holsted on August 9. The stakes are high for Denmark’s comeback king.

But he bounced back in fine style with second spot at this season’s series opener in Malilla and headed into last night’s SGP2 title decider third in the standings on 26 – 10 behind leader Wiktor Przyjemski.
Drejer hopes to do double duty this weekend and make his Speedway GP debut on Saturday night. He will hope to do it with an SGP2 medal in his pocket.

The idea of an international speedway center in Denmark was nurtured in a clothing store in Haderslev. Ib Søby takes us back to the early 1970s.

champion in speedway – Denmark’s new hot sports icon – entered the store, which smelled of cotton, leather and denim, from the delicious new shirts hanging along the walls, and from the smart new trousers on the shelves.
Discreetly from the speakers in the ceiling came the familiar verses from one of the biggest hits of the time, A Horse With No Name by America.
- Møjn Ole, says the young clerk Leif.
- Møjn, replies the world champion, and looks around the room.

It was not unusual for Haderslev’s prominent son, Ole Olsen, to stop by NYT TØJ (NEW CLOTHES), as the shop at Storegade 17 was called. Since 1969, Olsen had been a loyal customer when he was at home in Denmark, and the shop owner saw it as recognition that the world champion, who lived in England in the speedway season visited his shop.
Aage Toftdahl Søndergaard was the man, and he had a great impact on Ole Olsen’s career, and on the founding of Vojens Speedway Center in 1975.
- Aage and Ole could see something in each other, they were opposites that created a perfect match, because Ole wanted to earn a little from his sporting success, and Aage was an entrepreneur by the

grace of God, and not afraid to try something new, remembers Leif Sole, who worked at NYT TØJ, during that period, over 50 years ago. Both Aage Søndergaard and Leif Sole came from Grindsted, but had since moved to Haderslev.
- Aage was the son of a school inspector and moved to Haderslev in 1966, where, with NYT TØJ as a focal point, he became a central figure in renting out properties, says Leif Sole, who, through his knowledge of Aage, followed suit when he himself had completed his military service in 1970.
When Ole Olsen won his first world championship in 1971, fame exploded throughout Denmark, and of course Aage Søndergaard was not slow to see the great potential.
He had already started helping Ole Olsen to secure sponsorships, and when Olsen later won the famous TOMS Gold Bar for property, it was exhibited in the store as a drawcard.
- Yes, many people came to see the gold bar, but it became even better when Ole bought a BMW with the personal license plate 0LE 8. When it was parked in front of the store, people flocked in, and we sold clothes in long lines, smiles Leif Sole.
Aage Søndergaard created several exhibitions around Ole Olsen, and made local advertisements, for example, where Olsen recommended that citizens shop at NYT TØJ. >>

Their partnership also became a close friendship, and it turned into many cups of coffee and talks in the office behind the clothing store, while ideas and new initiatives were discussed.
Visionary Ole Olsen had already had the dream, since 1970, of creating a stadium of international format in Denmark, where there were only Selskov in Hillerød and Fredericia Stadium, both of which were located in residential areas.
With a man like Aage Søndergaard by his side, Ole dared to embark on the biggest venture of his life, and in 1974 he told Danish journalists about his and Aage’s plan.
Several municipalities approached him, but in the end they chose Vojens because it was close to Haderslev, because there was an airfield as a neighbor, and because it was not far from Germany or the North sea connection between England and Esbjerg.
From England, Ole Olsen’s friend and manager, the engineer Peter Adams, also became involved.
Ole and Aage held the first meeting with Vojens Municipality on December 2, 1974, and the Social Democratic mayor Peter Petersen aimed for an opening in 1976.

Ole and Aage couldn’t wait for that, so the spade was put in the ground in April 1975, while Ole and Aage scraped together over 3 million kroner for the project, which also received 500,000 in municipal support, because the couple also established the Vojens Speedway Club.
Ole Olsen himself created the best possible publicity by winning his second individual World Championship title, just three weeks before the opening in September 1975.
The enormous success of speedway meant that the magic quickly disappeared from NYT TØJ in Haderslev.
- Aage Søndergaard resigned from the business in late autumn to concentrate on Ole and Vojens Speedway Center, while I moved to a business in Aabenraa, before returning to Grindsted and becoming a salesperson in the textile industry, says Leif Sole.
If you take a walk down Storegade in Haderslev today, you will discover that there is still a clothing store at number 17.
But that is a completely different story.

Ganske vist bevarede Michael Jepsen
Martin Dugard, Coventry, 2000
Hans Andersen, Danmark, 2006
Michael Jepsen Jensen, Nordic, 2012
Adrian Miedzinski, Torun, 2013
Bartosz Zmarzlik, Gorzow, 2014

When Michael Jepsen Jensen became Danish champion in June, the title also triggered the wildcard for the FIM DELUXE HOMEART Speedway GP of Denmark. The 32-year-old star has tried this before, because in 2012 - thirteen years ago - he won the Nordic Grand Prix at Vojens Speedway Center - also on a wildcard.
By Ib Søby
Only a few speedway fans will forget Saturday, September 22, 2012, when Michael Jepsen Jensen overtook Nicki Pedersen on the last lap, and sensationally won his first - and so far only - grand prix victory.
The 21-year-old Grindsted resident was the hottest speedway name on the planet in 2012.
He was Team World Champion with Denmark, both as a senior and in the U21 category. He had scored seven fine points at the same year’s Danish Grand Prix in Parken in Copenhagen, and the victory at the Nordic Grand Prix cemented that Denmark had a new superstar on the way.
Two months later, Michael also became the nation’s latest SGP2 - U21 - world champion, in the two decisive and historic rounds in Bahia Blanca, Argentina, only one point ahead of Polish Maciej Janowski.
After the breakthrough in 2012, there were 27 grand prix appearances, with a single final and 3rd place, but the final step to establish himself at the absolute top of the world was missing. Maybe the success in 2012 was too overwhelming, maybe he became his own worst opponent?
Michael Jepsen Jensen certainly retained his status as a class rider for his Danish and foreign clubs, but accidents and injuries plagued him in the following years, and his father’s long cancer illness and treatment - which is now a finished chapteralso required mental strength for the great talent from Grindsted.
Although many eventually judged Michael as finished in an international context, he continued to believe in himself and continued his tireless work to fight his way back. He won three Swedish team championships, and with the Danish team championship for Slangerup in 2024, it became clear, that Michael Jepsen
Jensen had found himself again, and was on his way to the form he showed in 2012.
In the spring of 2025, he finally got the pieces together and was lightning fast in the Polish league. It also created a lot of attention when, in two heats - within a few minutes - he cut almost two seconds off the track record at Vojens Speedway Center in a Danish league match.
It is now called 55.0 - and strangely enough, he also held the track record back in 2012 at 57.1.
With the Danish championship in Brovst in June, Michael Jepsen Jensen finally joined the ranks of Danish speedway champions, but everything indicates that there is more to come from Michael in the coming years.

SGP 2 - U21 WORLD CHAMPIONS
Only twice before has an U21 World Champion been crowned at Vojens Speedway Center. One was Alf Busk in 1977, and the other was Lee Richardsson in 1999.

Only four riders have won both the Senior World Championship and SG2 – U21. They are Per Jonsson from Sweden, Gary Havelock from England, Australian Jason Crump and – of course – Bartosz Zmarzlik
From 1977 to 1987 it was held as the Junior European Championship, but since 1988 the title became FIM official, and for a number of years the winner received a wildcard to the SGP- series the following year.
From 2010 the SGP2 has been held as a race series

Despite a zero in his first heat, 15-year-old Vojens rider Villads Pedersen kept a cool head, and won his next four heats and ended up with 12 points, which was enough for the World Championship triumph in SGP3 at the Marketa Stadium in Prague at the end of May.
Danish legend Erik Gundersen was in Prague as a youth national coach, and he had no doubt that Villads Pedersen was the real winner.
- Villads was lightning fast, but it is clear that a zero in the first heat was a bucket of cold water on the head of him and his team.
- We had a short meeting in the locker room, where we talked about how 12 points could well be enough for a medal, and maybe even for the title itself, and I must say that Villads is extremely good at staying focused, says Erik Gundersen.
- I have rarely experienced a World Championship final like this. Everyone took points from each other and it was intense and exciting. Of course, we have to remember that these are young boys and take good care of them, but what a show they delivered.

With the Swedish legend Tony Rickardsson as ambassador the future of youth Speedway is here. Youth speedway entered a new era in 2023 with the launch of revolutionary youth category SGP4 – and the championship heads to legendary Danish venue Vojens for the first time in 2025.
The 2025 SGP4 event takes place on Saturday, September 13 - as part of a an historic weekend, which will see three FIM Speedway champions crowned on Vojens Speedway Center’s 50th anniversary weekend.
The first two editions of SGP4 took place at Swedish venue Malilla in 2023 and 2024. As part of their 10-year vision to nurture FIM Speedway’s future stars, Warner Bros. Discovery Sports enlisted the expertise of six-time world champion Tony Rickardsson to develop a new entry-level bike, aimed at 11 to 13-year-olds, to help the sport’s next generation take their first steps into speedway.
After a year of testing and development across Europe, a 190cc, four-stroke bike was selected and the SGP4 bike made its debut on July 15, 2023, with riders from 11 different nations and four continents going for glory in the FIM Speedway Youth World Cup (SGP4).
Danish young gun Elias Jamil wrote his name in history as the first-ever SGP4 champion with a flawless 15-point maximum, with Australian star Cooper Antone in second on 13 points. Denmark’s Niklas Bager took third spot after winning a run-off with Australia’s Kobi Canning for the bronze medal.

The 2024 edition saw American racer Brady Landon top the podium with a 15-point maximum as Antone took silver again and Bager made it back-to-back bronze medals.
With the riders giving the SGP4 bike their seal of approval, Rickardsson hopes the brand-new machine will become the go-to bike for all young riders seeking to take their first steps into the sport.
He said: - The idea of this bike which we have worked on is it should look like a big bike, sound like a big bike and, most importantly, it should ride like a big bike, but in a small package and for a reasonable sum of money. I think we have reached all of these criteria.
- These bikes are built for approximately 11 to 13-year-olds, size-wise, but it could be a practice bike for anybody.
- All in all, the first objective was to build a class where you can come from all over the world and race under the same regulations on an international level. We are hoping all the national federations will also pick up this bike model for their national championships as well.

scoring rider declared the winner and no semis or final.
•The winning rider at a Speedway GP event earns the top prize of 20 championship points, with 18 for second, 16 for third and 14 for fourth.
•Riders are guaranteed seven championship points for reaching the last-chance qualifiers - LCQ1 and LCQ2.
•The two second-placed riders in LCQ1 and LCQ2 earn 11 or 12, with the
showdown. The rider who clocks the fastest lap time advances to Q2, where they face another 60-second head-tohead battle.
•At the 2025 rounds in Landshut, Warsaw, Manchester (R4 Friday), Gorzow and Wroclaw, the riders who record the fastest lap time in their Q2 head-to-head advance to a four-rider sprint race.
•The winner of the sprint race earns four Speedway GP World Championship points, with three for the rider in second, two for third and one for fourth place. The sprint race winner will also earn first choice of starting positions for the evening’s SGP event, with the second, third and

fourth-placed riders next to select.
•There will be no sprint races at the events in Prague, Manchester (R5 Saturday), Malilla, Riga and Vojens due to these four venues staging racing on Friday evening.
•There will be no qualifying session ahead of Saturday’s R5 in Manchester. For the other four, the Qualifying session will culminate in Q3, with all four riders taking to the track at the same time for 60 seconds, bidding to set the fastest lap time.
•No SGP World Championship points will be on the line in Q3, but the rider with the fastest lap time earns first choice of starting positions for the evening’s event, with those placed second, third and fourth next to choose.
•The four riders who exit Qualifying in Q2 are next to choose their starting positions –in an order determined by their fastest lap times. Finally, the eight riders eliminated in Q1 then choose starting positions – again, in an order determined by their fastest lap times.
•All 16 starting numbers ensure every rider starts from each of the four gates at least once. But they will start from one gate twice – and a big performance in Qualifying hands them the best chance to ensure they have the right starting positions at the right time. This can be a huge advantage!
•Four riders line up in each race, each wearing a different helmet colour – red, blue, white or yellow. The rider in
red starts on the inside in gate one, with blue starting from gate two, white on gate three and yellow lining up in gate four on the outside.
•The countdown to a race begins when the FIM referee starts the 90-second clock. At the end of this 90-second deadline, riders must be at the tapes and ready to race –otherwise they face being disqualified.
•In the event of a restart due to an unsatisfactory start, the FIM race director has the option to reduce the time allowed to one minute.
•Once the four riders have been lined up by the start marshal, the referee turns on the green light to put them under starter’s orders. The tapes will then be released by a randomised electronic system.
•If riders touch the starting tapes, they are disqualified. If a rider is adjudged by the referee to have moved before the tapes lifted, they are handed an official warning. If they move or touch the tapes again during the same Speedway GP event, they are automatically disqualified.
•When the tapes lift, an intense minute of action gets underway as four riders battle it out over four furious laps.
•If a rider or riders fall, and the race is stopped, the FIM referee will disqualify the rider they deem to have caused the stoppage. If the incident occurs on the first turn, the referee has the option to invite all of the riders back for the restart if they believe noone was at fault.
•If a rider crosses the white inside line fully with both
wheels or leaves the circuit, they are adjudged to have retired from the race – unless they left the track to take essential avoiding action (e.g. to avoid a fallen rider).
•Unlike in other motorcycle sports, speedway bikes have NO BRAKES – riders make their turns by power sliding through the corners.
•Speedway GP and SGP2 bikes have 500cc engines and run on pure methanol – a cleanburning fuel which delivers breathtaking performance.
•Bikes accelerate off the start line faster than a Formula 1 car!
•Every bike has one fixed gear, with teams able to change these sprockets between races in their search for speed.
•Riders and their teams can make other adjustments to the bike including changing the ignition timing, switching the carburettor jet and moving the rear wheel back or forward in a bid to increase or reduce traction to suit track conditions.
•For SGP3 - the FIM Speedway Youth World Championship for under-16 riders, 250cc bikes are used. And in the FIM SGP4 World Championship for riders aged 11-13, FIM Speedway’s youngest stars compete on the 190cc SGP4 bike, designed by six-time FIM Speedway world champion Tony Rickardsson.
Further details of the rules and a link to the rulebook in full can be found on FIMSpeedway.com.
