Speedway fans over hele kloden retter i aften blikket mod Vojens Speedway Center. Nogle har taget den lange rejse til det smukke Sønderjylland for at være tilstede på stadion, mens millioner ser med på tv og live-stream – fra Californien til Papua Ny Guinea.

Vi er stolte af at skabe den største motorsportsbegivenhed på dansk grund, og vi har gjort alt hvad der står i vores magt, for at løbet bliver gennemført så flot som overhovedet muligt.

For et år siden blev vi begunstiget med en perfekt afvikling på en vidunderlig sensommer aften, og danske fans kunne juble og fejre en sjælden og uforglemmelig hjemmebane sejr til Leon Madsen.

Der er selvfølgelig ingen garanti for gentagelser.

Men mit crew og jeg, er jo slet ikke alene om at bygge fundamentet for en stor sportslig oplevelse på Danmarks nationale speedwayarena.

Haderslev Kommune - med borgmester Mads Skau i spidsen - den internationale motorunion-FIM, Warner Bros. Discovery Sports, Danmarks Motor Union, Team Danmark og Vojens Speedway Klub, har også afgørende roller i forhold til, at vi alle er samlet her i aften.

Et varmt velkommen skal lyde til Henrik Funder Kristensen der er tiltrådt som ny formand for Danmarks Motor Union i 2024.

Alle vores frivillige medarbejdere fra talrige klubber og foreninger i lokalområdet skal også have et stort klap på skulderen. For uden jer, ville der, ganske enkelt, ikke være noget VM grandprix.

Det samme kan siges om Deluxe Homeart, der fremstiller verdens bedste LED-stearinlys, og som igen er titelsponsor for stævnemødet i aften mellem verdens bedste speedwaykørere.

Vojens Speedway Center har nu 49 år på bagen.

Næste år er det 50 år siden, at det allerførste løb blev kørt her, midt imellem grusgrave og flyvestation Skrydstrup, og vores kære stadion har givet os så mange minder og store oplevelser.

Ganske ofte møder jeg mennesker som var tilstede her, søndag den 21. september 1975, og mange har besøgt os trofast siden dengang.

Det skal fejres.

Vi er allerede i fuld gang med at planlægge 2025, og en markant begivenhed i jubilæumsåret, bliver vores musikfestival SES Festival, lørdag den 24. maj, med en række danske topnavne og up coming bands.

I kan læse mere om SES Festival i dette program.

Men nu skal vi til at rette blikke ned mod selve banen, ligesom millioner af tv seere vil gøre det, og inden længe trykker dommeren på 2-minutters knappen.

Og samtidig kan I nyde vores nye og meget kraftigere lysanlæg, som i foråret blev etableret i samarbejde med Haderslev Kommune, Solar, David Super-Light og Kjærgaard.

Det er tid til race.

Speedway fans across the globe are turning their attention tonight to Vojens Speedway Center.

Some have made the long journey to the beautiful region of Southern Jutland to be present at the stadium, while millions are watching on TV and live-streaming—from California to Papua New Guinea.

We are proud to host the largest motorsport event on Danish soil, and we have done everything in our power to ensure that the race will be as spectacular as possible.

A year ago, we were blessed with a perfect event on a wonderful late summer evening, and Danish fans could cheer and celebrate a rare and unforgettable home victory for Leon Madsen.

Of course, there is no guarantee of a repeat from last year.

But my crew and I are not alone in making a great sporting experience at Denmark’s national speedway arena.

Haderslev Municipality—led by Mayor Mads Skau—the international motor union, FIM, Warner Bros. Discovery Sports, the Danish Motor Union, Team Denmark, and Vojens Speedway Club also play crucial roles in bringing us all together here tonight.

A warm welcome goes to Henrik Funder Kristensen, who has taken up the role of the new chairman of the Danish Motor Union.

All our volunteer staff from numerous clubs and associations in the local area also deserve a big round of applause. Without you, there simply wouldn’t be a World Championship Grand Prix.

The same can be said of Deluxe Homeart, who manufacture the world’s best LED candles and are once again the title sponsor of tonight’s meeting between the world’s best speedway riders.

Vojens Speedway Center is now 49 years old. Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the first race held here, in

the midst of gravel pits and the Skrydstrup airbase, and our beloved stadium has given us so many memories and great experiences.

Quite often, I meet people who were present here on Sunday, September 21, 1975, and many have visited us faithfully ever since.

This deserves to be celebrated.

We are already in full swing planning for 2025, and a significant event in the anniversary year will be our music festival SES Festival, on Saturday, May 24th, featuring a range of top Danish artists and up-and-coming bands.

But now, we should turn our attention to the track itself, just as millions of TV viewers will do, and soon the referee will press the two-minute button.

Then, it’s race time.

Velkommen til 2024 Deluxe Homeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens, og tak fordi i deltager her på banen, mens vores store sport går ind i sit andet århundrede.

Sidste år fejrede speedway 100 år siden det allerførste løb i Maitland, Australien i december 1923. Der blev reflekteret over de legender, historier og begivenheder, der har gjort denne sport så speciel. I 2024, sammen med vores partnere i FIM, ser vi på fremtiden i speedways 101. år.

I denne sæson bød vi FIM Speedway of Nations velkommen tilbage på kalenderen på Manchesters National Speedway Stadium i juli, og det var en aften, som Storbritanniens fans aldrig vil glemme, da løverne vandt deres andet verdensmesterskab på tre år.

I Speedway GP har vi allerede set Landshuts OneSolar Arena afvikle sin første Speedway GP siden 1997, mens Prag har afviklet rekorden med 30 SGP-runder siden 1997.

Vojens Speedway Center er også blandt Speedway GP-seriens mest berømte arenaer, da det er vært for sin 18. SGP-runde lørdag aften. Sidste års begivenhed var virkelig uforglemmelig for hjemmefansene, da den danske helt Leon Madsen toppede podiet, og udløste scener af glæde og en meget speciel udgave af den danske nationalsang, da han hentede sit trofæ på podiet.

Jeg er sikker på, at det er en sejr, Leon vil huske for evigt, og der er ingen tvivl om, at de danske fans vil krydse fingre for en hjemmevinder igen. Med Leon tilbage i aktion i aften, og Mikkel Michelsen nyder den bedste sæson i sin karriere indtil videre, er der alle muligheder for, at det kan ske. Men det bliver ikke nemt, da de bedste kørere i verden stiller op til Danmarks største speedway-begivenhed.

Når vi tager turen til Vojens, ved WBD Sports-holdet, at det er i trygge hænder. Dette er en af sportens mest erfarne klubber, når det kommer til at afholde store internationale begivenheder, og det faktum, at de leverede 2022 FIM Speedway of Nations her med kun to ugers varsel, understreger den passion og professionalisme, der

gør dette sted så specielt. Vi takker alle involverede i klubben for deres fortsatte støtte og ser frem til at gå sammen med dem igen i denne weekend.

Denne begivenhed markerer afslutningen på tre Speedway GPweekender efter vores ture til Wroclaw og Riga. Vi har nu to ugers pause, før vi afslutter serien med afslutningen i Torun den 28. september. Det har virkelig været en intens periode, og jeg takker alle involverede i at levere vores events, som har gjort det muligt at iscenesætte tre Speedway GP’er og en SGP2-begivenhed på kun 15 dage.

Trods den travle periode slipper vi ikke for gassen her i Danmark. Vi håber du får en fantastisk aften og nyder løbet!

Welcome to the 2024 Deluxe Homeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens and thank you for joining us at trackside as our great sport enters its second century.

Last year saw speedway celebrate 100 years since the very first meeting in Maitland, Australia in December 1923. It was a chance to reflect on the legends, stories and events that have made this sport so special. In 2024, alongside our partners at the FIM, we look to the future in speedway’s 101st year.

This season saw us welcome the FIM Speedway of Nations back on to the calendar at Manchester’s National Speedway Stadium in July, and it was a night Great Britain fans will never forget as the Lions won their second world title in three years.

In Speedway GP, we have already seen Landshut’s OneSolar Arena stage its first Speedway GP since 1997, while Prague hosted a record-breaking 30th SGP round since 1997.

Vojens Speedway Center is also among the Speedway GP series’ most storied venues as it hosts its 18th SGP round on Saturday night. Last year’s event was a truly unforgettable one for the home fans as Danish hero Leon Madsen topped the podium, sparking scenes of joy and a very special rendition of the Danish national anthem as he picked up his trophy on the podium.

I’m sure that’s a victory Leon will remember forever and there’s no doubt the Danish fans will be crossing their fingers for a home winner once again. With Leon back in action tonight and Mikkel Michelsen enjoying the best season of his career so far, there’s every chance it could happen. But it won’t be easy as the best riders in the world line up in Denmark’s biggest speedway event.

Whenever we make the trip to Vojens, the WBD Sports team knows it’s in safe hands. This is one of the sport’s most experienced clubs when it comes to staging major international events, and the fact they delivered the 2022 FIM Speedway of Nations here with just two weeks’ notice underlines the passion and professionalism that

make this place so special. We thank everyone involved in the club for their continued support and look forward to joining forces with them again this weekend.

This event marks the end of three straight Speedway GP weekends following our trips to Wroclaw and Riga. We now have a two-week break before we bring the series to a close with the final round in Torun on September 28. It has truly been an intense period, and I thank everyone involved in delivering our events who has made it possible to stage three Speedway GPs and an SGP2 event inside just 15 days.

Despite that busy run, we will not be easing off the throttle here in Denmark. We hope you have a fantastic evening and enjoy the racing!

The FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship marks 101 years of this exciting sport in 2024 with an extended 11-round series organised by promoter Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) Sports that visits 11 different cities in eight countries over an intense five-month period.

With powerful, highly-tuned engines and no brakes, speedway bikes are incredibly specialised and ideally suited to the sport’s short, sharp, actionpacked four-lap races. This format ensures that racing is fast and spectacular, so it is no wonder that the championship attracts so many spectators who want to see their heroes in live competition.

Once again, the man to beat this year is Poland’s Bartosz Zmarzlik. The reigning champion secured his fourth FIM Speedway GP World Championship title last year with five victories and two further podium finishes.

For the last two seasons we’ve been working closely with Warner Bros. Discovery Sports to grow the competition and globalise the championship, which includes taking the sport to new countries and giving riders from more nations their chance to shine on this stage. This season, Landshut in Germany returns to the Speedway GP calendar for the first time since 1997, Wroclaw is back on the SGP schedule after hosting an unforgettable Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup Final in 2023 and Prague celebrates its 30th SGP event this year – a series record.

We are also dedicated to the growth of our youth and grassroots competitions, with FIM Speedway Under 21 World Championship (SGP2) rounds in Malilla, Riga and Torun and the FIM Speedway Youth World Championship (SGP3) in Gorzow. The 2023 season also saw us launch SGP4, the FIM Speedway Youth World Cup – an entry-level category for 11 to 13-year-olds, giving the sport’s youngest stars the chance to compete on 190cc bikes designed by one of the legends of our sport, six-time World Champion Tony Rickardsson.

TILBAGE TIL VM SERIEN

Efter en sæson uden for FIM Speedway Grand Prixrampelyset gør Anders Thomsen et populært comeback som aftenens wildcard i Vojens.

PAUL BURBIDGE har talt med Sønderjylland Elite Speedways holdkaptajn.

Et kendt ansigt vender tilbage til FIM Speedway Grand Prix-serien, og man vil få svært ved at finde en stoltere hjemmehelt end Deluxe Homeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark wildcard end Anders Thomsen.

Thomsen har repræsenteret Sønderjylland Elite Speedway, siden det berømte stadion og klub kom tilbage til Speedwayligaen til 2021-sæsonen, så fans her vil være godt bekendt med den kører, som for nylig vandt sit tredje individuelle DM.

Mens Thomsen er på slaggerne denne weekend, har han været tvunget til at se Speedway GP fra sidelinjen i denne sæson, efter at have mistet sin plads i mesterskabet i august 2023, stoppet af en håndskade pådraget i et uhyggeligt styrt under OlyBet FIM Speedway GP i Letland – Riga.

Mens Thomsen er fast besluttet på at kæmpe sig tilbage til Speedway GP-serien, indrømmer han, at et tvunget år ud af mesterskabet ikke har været helt dårligt.

- Jeg føler, det har været godt for mig at have et år ude, og forhåbentlig kan jeg komme endnu stærkere tilbage, siger han.

Man skal køre for at vinde, når vi snakker Speedway GP, og det hjælper helt sikkert at undgå skader. Men Thomsen er spændt på at dyste mod verdens bedste kørere på hjemmebanen i aften.

- Jeg kan huske de gamle GP-flag, vi havde dengang.

-Man kunne få et sort-hvidternet flag med SGP-logoet på. Men kunne også få det i rødt og hvidt.

Den historie inspirerer Thomsen til at fortsætte traditionen med at skabe store speedway-øjeblikke i Vojens. Han hjalp SES –Sønderjylland Elite Speedway med at vinde Speedwayligaen guld i 2022 og sølv i 2021 og 2023.

Men han elsker også livet uden for banen i klubben.

- Jeg har været kaptajn for SES de sidste fire år. Jeg kan godt lide at være her. Som jeg altid har sagt, er det dejligt at tage til Vojens –græsset bliver altid slået – og alt ser så professionelt ud.

Det berømte speedwaystadion festede 2023, da landsmanden Leon Madsen vandt en uforglemmelig Deluxe Homeart FIM Danish Speedway GP-sejr.

Thomsen vil elske at tage sin plads i vinderens søgelys i år.

- Jeg kender banen ret godt. Jeg har kørt der de sidste fire år i ligaen. Selvfølgelig kan tingene ændre sig meget med banen. Men jeg vil være fokuseret, bevare roen, gøre, hvad jeg plejer og se, hvor langt jeg kan komme.

- Jeg glæder mig til at komme tilbage i Grand Prix, især det danske GP. Det er altid noget særligt at være i det danske GP, foran de danske tilskuere med det danske flag på brystet.

- Jeg har været på besøg i Vojens, siden jeg var barn, og jeg kan huske, da min far plejede at bringe mig hertil til de store løb, det var altid noget særligt.

Thomsen har stadig souvenirs fra barndomsbesøg til Speedway GP-runder i Vojens.

Thomsen har også en gylden mulighed for at genvinde sin plads i Speedway GP-serien, når han stiller op i FIM SGP Challenge på den tjekkiske bane Pardubice fredag den 4. oktober.

De fire bedste kørere i Challenge opnår plads i 2025 Speedway GP-serien, og Thomsen mener, at kendskabet til den store bane i Pardubice, giver ham en reel mulighed for at genvinde sin position i verdenseliten.

BACK IN THE GAME

After a season out of the FIM Speedway Grand Prix spotlight, Anders Thomsen makes a popular return as tonight’s wildcard in Vojens. PAUL BURBIDGE caught up with the Sønderjylland Elite Speedway team captain .

A FAMILIAR face returns to the FIM Speedway Grand Prix stage, and you would struggle to find a prouder home hero than Deluxe Homeart FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens wild card Anders Thomsen.

Thomsen has represented Vojens club Sønderjylland Elite Speedway since the famous venue re-entered Denmark’s Speedwayligaen for the 2021 season, so fans here will be well acquainted with a man who recently won his third Danish Championship.

While Thomsen is on familiar shale this weekend, has been forced to watch Speedway GP from the sidelines this season after losing his spot in the championship at the end of a 2023 campaign halted by a hand injury suffered in a spectacular fall at the OlyBet FIM Speedway GP of Latvia – Riga.

While Thomsen is determined to fight his way back on to the Speedway GP stage, he admits an enforced year out of the championship has not been all bad.

- I feel it has been good for me to have a year out, and hopefully I can come back even stronger, he said.

You have to be in it to win it, when it comes to Speedway GP, and avoiding injuries certainly helps with that. But Thomsen is excited to be taking on the best riders in the world on home shale tonight.

- I am looking forward to getting back into the Grand Prix, especially the Danish GP. It’s always something special to be in the Danish GP in front of the Danish spectators with the Danish flag on your chest.

- I have been at Vojens since I was a kid, and I remember when my dad used to bring me here for the GPs. It was always something special.

Thomsen still has souvenirs of childhood visits to Speedway GP rounds at Vojens.

- I remember the old GP flags we had back in the day, he recalled.

-You could get a black and white chequered flag with the SGP logo on. You could also get it in red and white.

That history inspires Thomsen to continue the tradition of creating great speedway moments at Vojens. He helped SES – Sønderjylland Elite Speedway win Speedwayligaen gold in 2022 and silver in 2021 and 2023.

But he also loves life off the track at the club.

- I have been captain of SES for the last four years. I like being there. As I have always said, it’s great to go to Vojens – the grass is always cut - and everything looks so professional.

The famous venue was rocking in 2023 when Leon Madsen raced to an unforgettable Deluxe Homeart FIM Danish Speedway GP victory.

Thomsen would love to take his place in the winner’s spotlight this year.

- I know the track pretty well. I have raced there for the last four years in the league. Of course, things can change a lot with the track for a GP. But I will stay focused, stay calm, do what I normally do and see how far I can get.

Thomsen has a golden opportunity to regain his spot in Speedway GP at the first attempt when he lines up in the FIM SGP Challenge at Czech track Pardubice on Friday, October 4 – day one of the city’s famous Golden Helmet weekend.

DeLuxeHomeart LED lys er yderst miljøvenlige og med en lang brændetid, modsat almindelige stearinlys, og i denne tid, med fokus på bæredygtighed og grøn omstilling, harmonerer det godt med speedway, som i mange henseender er en miljøvenlig motorsport.

Virksomheden blev grundlagt for fem år siden af Claus og Jette Bruun Poulsen.

JETTE BRUUN POULSEN

I slutningen af august 2024 er Jette Bruun Poulsen gået bort i en alt for tidlig alder.

I den forbindelse udtaler Jacob Olsen:

Man skabte et bedre og mere naturtro batteridrevet stearinlys. I februar 2020 kunne DeLuxeHomeart præsentere det nye LED lys, der med resin i toppen danner et wetlook, som ligner flydende stearin.

DeLuxeHomeart har nu globalt patent, og har øjensynligt ramt et godt tidspunkt, for interessen og væksten i virksomhed er nærmest eksplosiv

DeLuxeHomeart distribuerer over 5 millioner LED stearinlys årligt.

I Danmark forhandles DeLuxeHomeart også hos Imerco.

- Det er med en ubegribelig stor sorg, at vi har modtaget budskabet om Jettes pludselige bortgang. Jette var et smukt menneske og havde et stort hjerte for speedwaysporten, og ikke mindst for vores engagement her på Vojens Speedway Center.

- Vores professionelle samarbejde, har været én ting, men venskabet og vores mange gode stunder sammen, har haft en stor betydning for mig personligt.

- I denne svære tid går mine tanker til Claus og de fire børn, som har mistet en hustru og en mor.

DELUXEHOMEART SHINES AGAIN OVER THE SPEEDWAY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

DeLuxeHomeart is once again the title sponsor for the Danish FIM Speedway Grand Prix. The company develops and distributes LED candles to retailers worldwide.

The LED candles are highly environmentally friendly and have a long burn time, unlike regular candles. In this time of focus on sustainability and green transition, this align well with speedway, which in many ways is an environmentally friendly motorsport.

DeLuxeHomeart was founded five years ago, by Claus and Jette Bruun Poulsen.

The company wanted to develop a better and more natural battery-powered candle, and in February 2020 they presented the new LED light, which with resin at the top, creates a wet look that resembles liquid candles.

DeLuxeHomeart have a global patent, and have obviously hit a good time, because the interest and growth in our company is almost explosive, and distributes over 5 million LED candles annually.

JETTE BRUUN POULSEN

At the end of August 2024, Jette Bruun Poulsen has passed away, at a far too early age.

In this regard, Jacob Olsen states:

- It is with an incomprehensible deep sorrow that we have received the news of Jette’s sudden passing. Jette was a beautiful person with a big heart for speedway sports, and especially for our involvement here at Vojens Speedway Center.

- Our professional collaboration has been one thing, but the friendship and many good times we shared together, have had a great personal significance for me.

- In this difficult time, my thoughts go out to Claus and the four children, who have lost a wife and a mother.

MAGISKE MICHELSEN

Det var en meget rørt Mikkel Michelsen, som blev interviewet på globalt tv, lørdag den 18. maj 2024.

En ting var, at han netop havde vundet det tyske VM grandprix i Landshut, og skrevet sig ind i den danske speedway historie som ny grand prix vinder, men mere fordi, at sejren betød afslutningen på en lang periode med tekniske vanskeligheder og utallige forsøg på at finde det rette set up.

Nu havde han endelig fundet melodien, og aktuelt har den 30-årige Mikkel Michelsen muligheden for at vinde en VM medalje.

Danskeren er gået den slagne vej, og har kæmpet hårdt for at nå verdenstoppen.

Trods hele tre EM titler, og et dansk mesterskab i 2023, skal der mere til, for at slå igennem i de danske medier, som konstant skeler tilbage til de gyldne år, hvor nationen havde verdensstjerner som Ole Olsen, Erik Gundersen, Hans Nielsen, Jan O. Pedersen og Nicki Pedersen.

Den slags skeler Mikkel Michelsen dog ikke til.

Han er sin helt egen, og vil helst lade resultaterne på alverdens baner tale sig eget sprog.

Allerede fra fødslen kunne Mikkel Michelsen næsten ikke blive andet en speedwaykører. Både hans far Ole og hans onkel Niels havde kørt speedway på højt niveau. Og da familien flyttede til Ølstykke – nord for København – blev den 6- årige Mikkel medlem af den nærliggende speedwayklub i Slangerup – og har været medlem der lige siden.

Måske var det mest tænkt som en sund hobby, men Mikkel viste snart, at han også havde tænkt sig at vinde løb. I 2003 blev han dansk 50cc mester i Holsted, og snart måtte Ole opsætte en hylde til pokaler på Mikkels værelse, for det blev også til 80cc DM i 2007, og youth gold trophy i både 2008 og 2009.

I debutsæsonen på 500cc blev Mikkel Michelsen dansk holdmester med Slangerup 2010 og gentaget i 2011, så lige siden har han den nordsjællandske klubs mest markante profil.

I 2013 var Michelsen den afgørende brik, da det danske U21 landshold tog VM guld i tjekkiske Pardubice, Det er - i skrivende stund - Danmarks seneste VM guld, i både senior og U21-regi.

De senere år har Mikkel Michelsen været bosat i Polen.

Han fik sin grandprix debut på fuld tid i 2020, hvor han endte som nummer 14, indkaldt som reserve for tyske Martin Smolinski. Efter at have siddet ude i 2021-serien, sluttede han på en 11. plads i 2022, men nåede finalen i Kroatien og i Warszawa, hvor han blev henholdsvis tredje og fjerde.

Efter en sæson forstyrret af skader i 2022, vendte han tilbage til serien på et wild card i 2023, og tog en samlet 12. plads.

Den 3. EM titel sendte ham ind i grandprix serie i 2024, hvor ambitionen om en placering i top seks har været det altoverskyggende mål, men med den nuværende form, og sejren i Landshut, kan Mikkel Michelsen godt tillade sig at drømme om mere magi.

MAGICAL MICHELSEN

Now, he had finally found his rhythm, and the 30-year-old Mikkel Michelsen currently has the chance to win a World Championship medal.

The Dane has followed the well-trodden path, fighting hard to reach the top of the world.

Despite having won three European Championships and a Danish Championship in 2023, it takes more to break through in the Danish media, which constantly looks back to the golden years when the nation had world stars like Ole Olsen, Erik Gundersen, Hans Nielsen, Jan O. Pedersen, and Nicki Pedersen.

However, Mikkel Michelsen doesn’t pay much attention to that. He is his own person and prefers to let the results on tracks around the world speak for themselves.

It was a very emotional Mikkel Michelsen, who was interviewed on global TV on Saturday, May 18, 2024. Not only had he just won the German World Championship Grand Prix in Landshut, entering Danish speedway history as a new Grand Prix winner, but the victory also marked the end of a long period of technical difficulties and countless attempts to find the right setup.

From birth, Mikkel Michelsen was almost destined to become a speedway rider. Both his father Ole and his uncle Niels had raced speedway at a high level.

When the family moved to Ølstykke, north of Copenhagen, sixyear-old Mikkel became a member of the nearby speedway club in Slangerup, where he has been a member ever since.

It might have been intended as a healthy hobby, but Mikkel soon showed that he also wanted to win races. In 2003, he became the Danish 50cc champion in Holsted, and soon his father Ole had to set up a shelf for trophies in Mikkel’s room, as he also won the 80cc Danish Championship in 2007, and the youth gold trophy in both 2008 and 2009.

In his debut season on a 500cc bike, Mikkel Michelsen became the Danish team champion with Slangerup in 2010 and repeated the feat in 2011, making him the most prominent profile of the North Zealand club ever since.

In 2013, Michelsen was the decisive piece when the Danish U21 team won World Championship gold in Pardubice, Czech Republic.

This is, at the time of writing, Denmark’s most recent World Championship gold in both senior and U21 categories.

In recent years, Mikkel Michelsen has been living in Poland.

He made his full-time Grand Prix debut in 2020, where he finished 14th after being called in as a reserve for Germany’s Martin Smolinski. After sitting out the 2021 series, he finished 11th in 2022, reaching the final in Croatia and Warsaw, where he placed third and fourth, respectively.

After a 2022 season disrupted by injuries, he returned to the series with a wild card in 2023, finishing 12th overall. His third European Championship title earned him entry into the 2024 Grand Prix series, where his overarching goal has been to secure a top-six finish.

However, with his current form and the victory in Landshut, Mikkel Michelsen can allow himself to dream of even more magic.

The winning rider at a Speedway GP event earns the top prize of 20 championship points, with 18 for second, 16 for third and 14 for fourth.

Riders are guaranteed nine championship points for reaching the semi-finals. The two third-placed semifinalists earn 11 or 12 and the fourthplaced semi-finalists score nine or 10.

The highest-scoring of the two third and fourth-placed semi-finalists after 20 heats is awarded 12 or 10 points respectively.

The riders ranked ninth and below after 20 heats are awarded championship points on a sliding scale, with eight points picked up by the rider placed ninth in the classification and one going to the rider in 16th.

KRONET I VOJENS

På væggen i Ole Olsen Lounge hæger portrætter af de 28 verdensmestre som har kørt på Vojens Speedway Center gennem 49 år.

Men det er de færreste af dem, som har oplevet at blive kronet med sportens mest prestigefyldt titel, og få overrakt guld på dansk grund.

Det er kun sket fem gange.

Hertil skal det huskes, at Vojens i grandprix-sammenhæng sjældent har været den sidste afdeling og sæsonafslutning.

1988 - ERIK GUNDERSEN

På en regnfuld sensommerdag oplevede danske speedway fans den ultimative triumf på hjemmebane. Erik Gundersen slog ærkerivalen Hans Nielsen i omkørsel om guld og sølv, mens Jan O. Pedersen sikrede sig bronze.

Det er kun sket i 1937, 1949 og i 1961, at hele podiet har været besat af kørere fra samme nation.

1994 - TONY RICKARDSSON

Den sidste en-aften-finale, inden VM overgik til grandprix serien i 1995.

Tony Rickardsson, som havde fået sit store gennembrud med VMsølv i 1991, startede finalen med 3 andenpladser, men endte på 12 point, sammen med danske Hans Nielsen og australske Craig Boyce. I den nervepirrende omkørsel var svenskeren iskold og vandt sin første af seks VM titler.

1996 - BILLY HAMILL

Den regerende verdensmester fra 95, Hans Nielsen, kom til sidste VM afdeling i Vojens med et forspring på 9 point. Det lignede en femte titel til den danske legende.

Men amerikanerne kom i vejen.

Først slog Greg Hancock danskeren, som ikke havde nogen god aften, og senere satte Billy ” the bullit ” Hamill også Nielsen på plads og vandt afdelingen i Vojens. Da Nielsen ikke nåede A- finalen satte han 11 point til, og med kun 2 point blev Hamill USA´s tredje verdensmester, efter Bruce Penhall – 1981 og 82 - og Sam Ermolenko i 1993.

1997 - GREG HANCOCK

Året efter Hamills triumf bød overraskende på en ny amerikansk verdensmester. Men selve afgørelsen i Vojens – som sjette og sidste runde – var ikke så nervepirrende som i 1996.

Greg Hancock havde været ganske suveræn i sæsonen, og kom til Vojens med 100 point, mod Hamills 88, mens Tony Rickardsson havde 70 og Tomasz Gollob 76.

Hamill havde en svær aften og spændingen om VM guldet forduftede ret hurtigt, fordi Hancock scorede pænt, og kørte sig i løbets A-finale. Her vandt britiske Mark Loram, foran Tony Rickardsson, men tredjepladsen var rigeligt for Greg Hancock til at sikre den samlede VM sejr.

Der skulle gå hele 14 år inden Greg Hancock vandt sin anden titel i 2011, og han gentog kunststykket i 2014 og 2016.

1999 – TONY RICKARDSSON

Et alvorligt biluheld, ugen før afgørelsen, kostede måske VM titlen for polske Tomasz Gollob i 1999. Inden Vojens førte han med fire point, 90-86, mod den regerende mester Tony Rickardsson.

Men polakken var en skygge af sig selv, mens Tony Rickardsson cruisede sig i A-finalen, som han også vandt, og dermed erobrede sin 3. VM titel.

Først i 2010 lykkedes det den populære Tomasz Gollob at blive sin nations 2. verdensmester, efter Jerzy Szcziakiel i 1973.

CROWNED IN VOJENS

On the wall of the Ole Olsen Lounge hang portraits of the 28 world champions who have raced at Vojens Speedway Center over the past 49 years.

However, only a few of them have experienced being crowned with the sport’s most prestigious title and receiving the gold medal on Danish soil.

This has only happened five times. It should be noted that Vojens has rarely been the final round and season finale in the Grand Prix context.

1988 - ERIK GUNDERSEN

On a rainy late summer day, Danish speedway fans witnessed the ultimate triumph on home ground. Erik Gundersen defeated arch-rival Hans Nielsen in a run-off for gold and silver, while Jan O. Pedersen secured the bronze. It has only happened in 1937, 1949, and 1961, that the entire podium was occupied by riders from the same nation.

1994 - TONY RICKARDSSON

The last one-night final before the World Championship transitioned to the Grand Prix series in 1995. Tony Rickardsson, who had his major breakthrough with a World Championship silver in 1991, started the final with 3 second places but ended up with 12 points, along with Denmark’s Hans Nielsen and Australia’s Craig Boyce. In the nerve-wracking run-off, the Swede remained ice-cold and won his first of six World Championship titles.

1996 - BILLY HAMILL

The reigning world champion from 1995, Hans Nielsen, arrived at the final World Championship round in Vojens with a 9-point lead. It looked like a fifth title for the Danish legend.

But the Americans got in the way. First, Greg Hancock defeated the Dane, who didn’t have a good night, and later Billy ”the Bullet” Hamill also took Nielsen and won the round in Vojens. Since Nielsen didn’t reach the A-final, he lost 11 points, and with just two points, Hamill became the USA’s third world champion, after Bruce Penhall in 1981 and 1982, and Sam Ermolenko in 1993.

1997 - GREG HANCOCK

The year after Hamill’s triumph surprisingly brought a new American world champion. But the actual decision in Vojens – as the sixth and final round – wasn’t as nerve-wracking as in 1996. Greg Hancock had been quite dominant during the season, arriving in Vojens with 100 points, compared to Hamill’s 88, while Tony Rickardsson had 70 and Tomasz Gollob 76. Hamill had a tough night, and the tension over the World Championship gold quickly evaporated as Hancock scored well and made it to the event’s A-final.

Here, Britain’s Mark Loram won, ahead of Tony Rickardsson, but third place was more than enough for Greg Hancock to secure the overall World Championship victory. It would be 14 years before Greg Hancock won his second title in 2011, and he repeated the feat in 2014 and 2016.

1999 – TONY RICKARDSSON

A serious car accident a week before the final possibly cost Polish Tomasz Gollob the World Championship title in 1999. Before Vojens, he led by four points, 90-86, against the reigning champion Tony Rickardsson.

But the Pole was a shadow of himself, while Tony Rickardsson cruised to the A-final, which he also won, thus claiming his 3rd World

Championship title. It wasn’t until 2010 that the popular Tomasz Gollob became his nation’s 2nd world champion, after Jerzy Szczakiel in 1973.

HOW IT WORKS

SGP FORMATTHE BASICS

•Every FIM Speedway Grand Prix round features 16 riders, racing each other over 20 high-intensity heats.

•Each heat features four riders taking four laps of the track – with all the action crammed into around ONE MINUTE.

•The winning rider in each heat scores three race points, with two for second place, one for third and zero points for last place, being disqualified or failing to finish.

•The eight riders with the most race points progress to the semi-finals.

•The riders placed first and second in each semi make it through to the final.

•The winner of the final is the FIM Speedway Grand Prix winner.

•SGP2 events follow the same 23-heat racing format as Speedway GP, with semifinals and finals. SGP3 and SGP4 events are contested over a straight 20 heats, with the highest-scoring rider declared the winner and no semis or final.

CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT

•The winning rider at a Speedway GP event earns the top prize of 20 championship points, with 18 for second, 16 for third and 14 for fourth.

•Riders are guaranteed nine championship points for reaching the semi-finals.

•The two third-placed semi-finalists earn 11 or 12, with the highest-scoring of those two riders in the first 20 heats earning 12. The fourth-placed semi-finalists score nine or 10, with the highest-scoring of those two riders in the heats handed 10.

•The riders ranked ninth and below after 20 heats are awarded championship points on a sliding scale, with eight points picked up by the rider placed ninth in the classification and one going to the rider in 16th.

•The rider who scores the most FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship points over a season is crowned world champion.

QUALIFYING PRACTICE

•Qualifying Practice at all events offers riders an opportunity to secure first choice of starting number, which allows them to select the set of starting positions they feel will suit them best for that weekend’s Speedway GP event.

•All 16 starting numbers ensure every rider starts from each of the four gates at least once. But they will start from one gate twice – and a big performance in Qualifying Practice hands them the best chance to ensure they have the right starting positions at the right time. This can be a huge advantage!

•Riders will take to the track in groups of four and will have two blocks of two minutes clock the fastest flying laps they can.

•All 16 riders compete against each other to set the fastest lap time.

•The rider who records the fastest lap over the session earns first choice of starting number for the weekend’s Speedway GP event, with the second-placed rider choosing next and the rider ranked 16th selecting last.

•If two or more riders clock the same fastest lap time, the rider whose second fastest lap time is quicker will be placed higher.

•Any riders who fail to set times will be randomly allocated starting numbers by the FIM after the riders who set times have selected.

•Four riders line up in each race, each wearing a different helmet colour – red, blue, white or yellow. The rider in red starts on the inside in gate one, with blue starting from gate two, white on gate three and yellow lining up in gate four on the outside.

•The countdown to a race begins when the FIM referee starts the two-minute clock. At the end of this two-minute deadline, riders must be at the tapes and ready to race – otherwise they face being disqualified.

•In the event of a restart due to an unsatisfactory start, the FIM race director has the option to reduce the time allowed to one minute.

•Once the four riders have been lined up by the start marshal, the referee turns on the green light to put them under starter’s orders. The tapes will then be released by a randomised electronic system.

•If riders touch the starting tapes, they are disqualified. If a rider is adjudged by the referee to have moved before the tapes lifted, they are handed an official warning. If they move or touch the tapes again during the same Speedway GP event, they are automatically disqualified.

•When the tapes lift, an intense minute of action gets underway as four riders battle it out over four furious laps.

•If a rider or riders fall, and the race is stopped, the FIM referee will disqualify the rider they deem to have caused the stoppage. If the incident occurs on the first turn, the referee has the option to invite all of the riders back for the restart if they believe noone was at fault.

BIKES

•Unlike in other motorcycle sports, speedway bikes have NO BRAKES – riders make their turns by power sliding through the corners.

•Speedway GP bikes have 500cc engines and run on pure methanol – a clean-burning fuel which delivers breathtaking performance.

•Bikes accelerate off the start line faster than a Formula 1 car!

•Rear tyres could be used for as few as one or two races as teams seek that fresh edge to ensure ultimate grip off the start line. Some riders opt to use a new tyre for every heat – others use a rear tyre for two races, turning it after its first race to get a fresh edge.

•Riders can bring as many bikes as they wish to a Speedway GP round – two are placed in the pits, with any others held in a standby area near the pits. Riders usually bring three bikes.

•Every bike has one fixed gear, with teams able to change these sprockets between races in their search for speed.

•Riders and their teams can make other adjustments to the bike including changing the ignition timing, switching the carburettor jet and moving the rear wheel back or forward in a bid to increase or reduce traction to suit track conditions.

•Engine tuners also play a key role in boosting speed – servicing motors and ensuring they are fitted with parts that deliver high performance and can endure the extreme pressures they face in a speedway race.

•Motors are also fitted with rev limiters to protect the engines and increase their service life.

HOW IT WORKS RACING RULES

•If a rider crosses the white inside line fully with both wheels, or leaves the circuit, they are adjudged to have retired from the race – unless they left the track to take essential avoiding action (e.g. to avoid a fallen rider).

- Vi har jo de mest fantastiske rammer med gode parkeringsforhold, storskærm, fine toiletfaciliteter og boder. Det er i virkeligheden en gammel drøm, at skabe en folkelig kulturel begivenhed, som ikke har med motorsport at gøre, der nu bliver til virkelighed, siger Jacob Olsen.

Efter Ole Olsens første VM titel i 1971 eksploderede interessen for speedway, som en motorsport hvor unge kunne deltage for relativt få midler. Baner skød op over det ganske land, men det var baner som var tiltænkt lokale og nationale dyster med begrænsede publikumsfaciliteter.

I løbet af efteråret 2024 offentliggøres hvilke bands og solister som indtager scenerne på den historiske festival.

- I samarbejde med en professionel koncertarrangør forhandler vi med nogle af de største danske stjerner, fordi vi ønsker at skabe en unik oplevelse som kan tiltrække tusinder af danskere, siger direktør Jacob Olsen.

Søndag den 21. september 1975 blev der skrevet dansk sportshistorie.

Det lille kongerige fik et stadion, hvor verdens bedste speedwaykørere kunne dyste i hæsblæsende dueller, for øjnene af et dansk publikum. Det var noget nyt.

Ikke fordi speedway var et nyt bekendtskab for de danske fans, men fordi man fik et stadion af international kaliber, og en bane som verdensstjernerne meget hurtigt bedømte som en af klodens allerbedste racerbaner.

Dansk speedway havde, fra tiden før 2.verdenskrig, været henvist til små snævre baner på eksisterende fodboldstadions som fx Gladsaxe, Gentofte, Selskov i Hillerød, Esbjerg, og på 6. Juli vej i Fredericia.

Landet havde i efterkrigstiden mange dygtige kørere som Kiehn Berthelsen, Arne Pander, Kurt W. Petersen og Poul Vissing. Men

Skulle de danske kørere – Ole Olsens efterfølgere – vinde store titler kunne det kun ske i udlandet. Det ville Olsen lave om på, og sammen med sin daværende partner Åge Søndergaard, så han muligheden skabe en god forretning, og samtidig tilføre fremtiden for dansk speedway, et anlæg af internationalt format.

Den vision blev indfriet i september 1975.

Det var kaos i Sønderjylland. Bilkøerne strakte sig ud til motorvejen 12 kilometer væk. Alle topstjerner var der, deriblandt verdens mest vindende speedwayikon, New Zealands Ivan Mauger:

- Sikke en perfekt bane Vojens er. Jeg har aldrig kørt på en bane i hele verden, som er så jævn. Ole kan virkelig være stolt over det, han har opnået her, sagde Ivan Mauger, som senere blev kåret som verdens bedste speedwaykører gennem tiderne.

& 50 YEARS OF WORLD-CLASS SPEEDWAY

2025 will be a historic year at the Vojens Speedway Center, as Denmark’s National Speedway Arena celebrates its 50th anniversary.

On Saturday, May 24th, the anniversary year will be marked with the SES Festival, where top Danish artists will take the stage, and the prestigious speedway track will be transformed into a festival ground for one day. Expect the best music, cold draft beer, and plenty of exciting food stalls.

”We have the most fantastic facilities with ample parking, big screens, excellent toilet facilities, and sales outlets. It’s really an old dream of creating a popular cultural event, unrelated to motorsports, that is now becoming a reality,” says Jacob Olsen.

During the fall of 2024, the bands and solo artists who will perform at this historic festival will be announced.

After Ole Olsen’s first World Championship title in 1971, interest in speedway exploded as a motorsport where young people could participate with relatively few resources. Tracks sprang up all over the country, but these were tracks intended for local and national competitions with limited spectator facilities.

If Danish riders – Ole Olsen’s successors – were to win major titles, it could only happen abroad. Olsen wanted to change that, and together with his business partner Åge Søndergaard, he saw the opportunity to create a good business and at the same time secure the future of Danish speedway with a facility of international standards.

That vision was realized in September 1975.

”In collaboration with a professional concert organizer, we are negotiating with some of the biggest Danish stars because we want to create a unique experience that can attract thousands of Danes,” says director Jacob Olsen.

On Sunday, September 21st, 1975, Danish sports history was made.

The small kingdom gained a stadium where the world’s best speedway riders could compete in thrilling duels in front of a Danish audience. It was something new.

Not because speedway was unfamiliar to Danish fans, but because they now had a stadium of international caliber and a track that world stars quickly rated as one of the best in the world.

Danish speedway, dating back to before World War II, had been confined to small, narrow tracks on existing football stadiums like those in Gladsaxe, Gentofte, Selskov in Hillerød, Esbjerg, and 6. Juli Street in Fredericia.

The country had many skilled riders in the post-war period, such as Kiehn Berthelsen, Arne Pander, Kurt W. Petersen and Poul Vissing. But apart from Kurt W. Petersen’s European Championship title on the long track in 1964, Danish participation in a World Championship final was almost unthinkable.

It was chaos in Southern Jutland. The car queues stretched out to the motorway 12 kilometers away. All the top stars were there, including the world’s most successful speedway icon, New Zealander Ivan Mauger:

”What a perfect track Vojens is. I have never ridden on a track anywhere in the world that is so smooth. Ole can really be proud of what he has achieved here,” said Ivan Mauger, who was later voted the greatest speedway rider of all time.

MISTER SPEEDWAY

To alvorlige styrt i foråret 2008 kom til at forandre Phil Morris´ karriere og livsforløb. En punkteret lunge, tre brækkede ribben og et brud i skulderen kostede stor set hele sæsonen.

Under genoptræningen fulgte han med i det britiske tv show ’The Colour of Money’, hvor stor paratviden var afgørende. Og Phil, der er udstyret med en stærk hukommelse, meldte sig til ITV, og læste en masse bøger om alle tænkelige facts.

Han vandt over 60.000 pund.

- De penge faldt på et tørt sted, både fordi jeg havde mistet hele sæsonen, og samtidig var min hustru Katie gravid med vores første barn. Det gav os muligheden for at etablere os i hjembyen Cwmfelinfach, sagde Phil Morris dengang til avisen South Wales Argus.

Succesen medførte optræden i andre tv shows, hvor flere præmiepenge rullede ind på kontoen.

- Det var en sjov periode og en dejlig afveksling, men inderst inde brændte jeg for at komme tilbage som speedwaykører på højt niveau, husker Phil Morris, som i 2009 gjorde comeback, men efterhånden måtte erkende, at problemer med skulderen satte et endeligt stop for en stor karriere.

I 2011 kørte han sit afskedsløb i Birmingham.

TRÆNER

Men den sportsglade Phil Morris kunne ikke slippe den sport,

som havde givet ham så meget. Allerede som 9-årig var han ungdoms mester på græsbane, og tegnede en speedwaykontrakt med Reading som 16-årig.

Året efter blev han britisk holdmester med Reading.

Nu, som 34-årig, hvor en lang aktiv karriere var forbi, investerede Phil Morris i en voksende sandwich-virksomhed, samtidig med at han blev holdleder for Birmingham, og også for det britiske U21 landshold.

- Jeg har ofte været på det rigtige sted på det rigtige tidspunkt, og jeg har været heldig med mange af de projekter, som jeg har kastet mig over, siger Phil Morris.

Efter fire år med U21 landsholdet blev han assistent for det britiske senior landshold, og vendte i en periode også tilbage til Birmingham, inden han i 2015 blev udpeget som ny race director for VM grandprix serien, som efterfølger til danske Ole Olsen og svenske Tony Olsson.

RACE DIRECTOR

- Min rolle handler om at skabe det bedste show for fans på stadion og for tv seerne. Dét er selvfølgelig en balance mellem kørere, officials, baneforhold og sikkerhed, men jeg synes vi har formået at skærpe afviklingen af speedway grandprix, SON og Hold VM, siger Phil Morris, og tilføjer at han ofte er nødt til at være kontant, når det syder og koger i ryttergården.

- Der er jo 16 meninger om alting, men jeg oplever generelt, at kørerne har stor respekt for min måde at gøre tingene på.

På det personlige plan blev Phil Morris ramt af en tragedie, i efteråret 2022, da hans hustru Katie døde efter længere tids sygdom.

- Det var en svær tid for mig og vore to piger, som nu er 15 og 11 år. Jeg var tæt på at opgive alt, men pigerne skubbede på mig, og sagde at jeg skulle fortsætte mit virke, i stedet for at begrave mig i sofaen hjemme.

Jobbet som race director kræver mange rejser gennem sæsonen, men Phil Morris har etableret en fornuftig pasningsordning mens han er væk hjemmefra.

- Det fungere faktisk rigtig godt, og vi har stadig megen tid sammen, især når der er vinterpause, siger Phil Morris, og fortæller at familien i sommeren 2024 var på ferie i Grækenland, mens der var pause i speedway på grund af de Olympiske Lege i Frankrig.

For nylig blev det offentliggjort, at Phil Morris også tiltræder som direktør for den britiske liga.

- Vi er nødt til at ryste posen og skabe fremgang for britisk speedway. Der er mange tings som kan gøres bedre, og vi har en fin tv aftale med en serie matcher, som gerne skal afvikles skarpt og præcist. Speedway er et unikt produkt, men stævnerne kan pakkes bedre ind, til glæde for publikum og tv seere, mener Phil Morris.

Kort sagt vil Phil Morris drage nogle af erfaringerne fra grandprix serien ind i den britiske lige.

- Jeg tror på, at britisk speedway kan vokse i de kommende år, og jeg tror også at international speedway har en spændende fremtid i samarbejde med Warner Bros. Discovery Sports. Der ligger et enormt potentiale, hvis vi kan brede sporten ud til fx Asien og Sydamerika, men også til flere europæiske lande, hvor sporten nogle steder, har svære vilkår.

MR. SPEEDWAY

Two serious crashes in the spring of 2008 changed Phil Morris’s career and life trajectory. A punctured lung, three broken ribs, and a fractured shoulder cost him almost the entire season. During his rehabilitation, he followed the British TV show ’The Colour of Money’, where extensive general knowledge was crucial. Phil, who has a strong memory, applied to ITV and read numerous books on all sorts of facts.

He won over £60,000.

”The money came at just the right time, both because I had lost the entire season, and my wife Katie was pregnant with our first child. It gave us the opportunity to settle down in our hometown of Cwmfelinfach,” Phil Morris told the South Wales Argus at the time.

The success led to appearances on other TV shows, where more prize money rolled into the account.

”It was a fun period and a nice change, but deep down, I was burning to return as a high-level speedway rider,” recalls Phil Morris, who made a comeback in 2009 but eventually had to acknowledge that shoulder problems put a definitive end to a great career. He raced his farewell race in Birmingham in 2011.

COACH

However, the sports-loving Phil Morris couldn’t let go of the sport that had given him so much. Already at 9 years old, he was a youth champion on the grass track and signed a speedway contract with Reading at 16. The following year, he became British team champion with Reading. Now, at 34, with a long active career behind

him, Phil Morris invested in a growing sandwich business while also becoming team manager for Birmingham and the British U21 national team.

”I’ve often been in the right place at the right time, and I’ve been lucky with many of the projects I’ve taken on,” says Phil Morris.

After four years with the U21 national team, he became an assistant for the British senior national team and returned to Birmingham for a period before being appointed as the new race director for

the World Championship Grand Prix series in 2015, succeeding Denmark’s Ole Olsen and Sweden’s Tony Olsson.

”My role is about creating the best show for fans at the stadium and TV viewers. That is, of course, a balance between riders, officials, track conditions, and safety, but I think we’ve managed to sharpen the execution of the Speedway Grand Prix, SON and SWC,” says Phil Morris, adding that he often has to be firm when things heat up in the pits.

”There are 16 opinions on everything, but I generally find that the riders have great respect for the way I handle things.”

On a personal level, Phil Morris was hit by a tragedy in the fall of 2022, when his wife Katie passed away after a long illness.

”It was a difficult time for me and our two girls, who are now 15 and 11 years old. I was close to giving up everything, but the girls pushed me and said I should continue my work, instead of burying myself on the couch at home.”

The job as race director requires a lot of travel during the season, but Phil Morris has established a sensible care arrangement while he is away from home.

It was recently announced that Phil Morris will also take on the role of director for the British league.

”We need to shake things up and create progress for British speedway. There are many things that can be improved, and we have a good TV deal with a series of matches that need to be executed sharply and precisely. Speedway is a unique product, but the events can be packaged better for the benefit of the audience and TV viewers,” says Phil Morris.

In short, Phil Morris intends to bring some of the experiences from the Grand Prix series into the British league.

”I believe that British speedway can grow in the coming years, and I also believe that international speedway has an exciting future in collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery Sports. There is enormous potential if we can expand the sport to places like Asia and South America, but also to more European countries where the sport, in some places, faces challenges.”

”It actually works very well, and we still have plenty of time together, especially during the winter break,” says Phil Morris, adding that the family vacationed in Greece in the summer of 2024, during the speedway break due to the Olympic Games in France.

MOTORSPORT SKAL BEGYNDE SOM LEG

I de kommende år sætter Danmark Motor Union fokus på børn og unge.

Men det skal handle mere om leg og sjov, fremfor at vinde pokaler og mesterskaber, når børn på 3-4 år har lyst til at prøve motorsport.

Det nye tiltag sker ikke kun i speedway, men også i motocross, quad og trial, som også hører under DMU.

- Vi har allerede en række klubber, hvor man har skaffet ekstra udstyr til leje, så børn og unge kan prøve sig frem, i trygge ramme på lav-effekt maskiner, uden at familien skal ud i en stor investering, inden barnet beslutter sig, om hobbyen skal være motorsport eller noget andet, siger Louise Laustsen.

Motorsport har traditionelt sin egen Fødekæde.

I langt de fleste tilfælde er det med forældrene i baglandet, når en dreng eller pige begynder at dyrke motorsport, og det er nødvendigt, fordi sporten er så individuel og kræver en del udstyr.

- Motorsport er jo anderledes en fx fodbold og håndbold, hvor forældrene godt kan afleverer børnene nogle timer, og hente dem hjem igen, siger Louise Laustsen, som er hovedbestyrelsesmedlem i DMU.

DMU vil gerne række ud til børn og unge, som ikke umiddelbart har en familiemæssig tilgang til motorsport.

- Der findes mange børn og unge som slet ikke ved, at motorsport kan være en fantastisk hobby, med masser af oplevelser og tæt sammenhold. Og hvis de så vil gå videre til at køre konkurrencer, så har de allerede fået et kendskab til hvad det kræver, mener Louise Laustsen.

- Vi ser også, at mange børn kender til motorsport fra fx computerspil, men ikke ved hvor der findes klubber, hvor man kan prøve tingene selv. Derfor et det en opgave for DMU og klubberne, at gøre opmærksom på, at vi findes over hele landet.

MOTORSPORT SHOULD START AS FUN

In the coming years, the Danish Motor Union will focus on children and young people. However, it should be more about play and fun, rather than winning trophies and championships, when children aged 3-4 want to try motorsport.

Motorsport traditionally has its own pipeline.

”We already have several clubs that have acquired extra equipment for rent, so that children and young people can try it out in a safe environment with low-power machines, without the family having to make a large investment before the child decides whether the hobby should be motorsport or something else,” says Louise Laustsen.

DMU wants to reach out to children and young people who do not immediately have a family connection to motorsport.

In most cases, parents are in the background when a boy or girl begins to take up motorsport, and this is necessary because the sport is so individual and requires quite a bit of equipment.

”Motorsport is different from, for example, football and handball, where parents can drop off their children for a few hours and pick them up later,” says Louise Laustsen, a board member of the Danish Motor Union (DMU).

The new initiative is not only happening in speedway but also in motocross, quad racing, and trial, which are also under DMU.

”There are many children and young people who don’t even know that motorsport can be a fantastic hobby, with lots of experiences and close camaraderie. And if they then want to move on to compete, they already have an understanding of what it requires,” says Louise Laustsen.

”We also see that many children know motorsport from video games, for example, but don’t know where there are clubs where they can try it themselves. Therefore, it is a task for DMU and the clubs to make it known that we exist all over the country.”

Tony Steele (1955-2024)

Da Tony Steele i 2010 dømte sit sidste grandprix i polske Bydgoszcz var det fordi han faldt for FIM´s aldersregel på 55 år.

Men han forblev i sporten som medlem af britiske ACU og Speedway Control Bureau, og som FIM repræsentant.

Den tredobbelte britiske verdensmester Tai Woffinden skriver i sin biografi Raw Speed, at han altid har fundet 55-års reglen til mere skade end gavn for sporten.

- Tony var en af de bedste, hvis ikke den allerbedste official, vi har haft. Hvorfor en dommer skulle være for gammel, når han er 55 år har jeg ingen ide om. Det er jo ikke fordi han skal løbe rundt langs banen for at holde øje med kørerne.

I august kom den triste besked, at den verdensberømte dommer og official er gået bort i en alder af kun 69 år.

Den krølhårede og smilende Antony Steele blev født i 1955 i Leicester, og var fra barn en stor fan af byens fodboldhold. I det hele taget fyldte fodbold meget i Tonys barndomshjem.

Hans familie stammer Seaton Delaval, en lille landsby nord for Newcastle Upon Tyne, hvor flere mænd i Steele familien spillede i den lille berømte klub Blyth Spartans.

I sin skoletid kørte han ofte med bus forbi Blackbird Road Stadion i Leicester og kunne se ordet Speedway malet på taget af tribunen.

Han havde ikke den fjerneste ide, at speedway skulle blive hans liv.

I slutningen af 1967 var naboklubben i Long Eaton gået fallit, og ACU fik overført licens og kørere til Leicester, hvor man var villige til at give sporten en ny chance.

Således opstod Leicester Lions i 1968.

På det tidspunkt var den fodboldglade Tony Steele 13 år og en kammerat spurgte ham en dag om han ville med til speedway. Det var tirsdag den 16. april i en hjemmematch mod Sheffield, som Leicester vandt med to point, og Tony Steele blev en rendyrket speedwayfan.

Han fik sig et lille job hos Leicester, som en del af det hold af drenge der stod for banens overdækning af track cover. Langsomt fik han mere og mere ansvar hos staben i Leicester, og fordi han var god til at regne, fik han det ansvarsfulde job, at holde regnskab med metanol og olieforbruget i pitten.

I 1983 lukkede Leicester igen, og Tony, som var blevet uddannet i et stort forsikringsselskab, blev spurgt om han ville med promotor Martin Rogers til Kings Lynn.

Det var dog for lang fra hjemmet, men kort tid senere overtog Rogers også Peterborough, og bad nu Tony om at være startmaster der.

- Jo, men det har jeg jo aldrig prøvet, svarede en tøvende Steele.

Han blev startmaster i otte år.

I 1993 var det en annonce i Speedway Star, som ændrede Tony Steeles liv.

Det britiske Speedway Control Bureau annoncerede efter nye dommere, og et af medlemmerne opfordrede Tony Steele til at søge uddannelsen. Han tog den krævende uddannelse og i maj 1994 havde Tony sin debut i en match mellem Wolverhampton og Reading.

Som ny dommer havde 39-årige Tony den rigtige alder og ramte et tidspunkt hvor FIM gerne ville have nye dommere til den internationale liste, på grund af den kommende Grand Prix serie, så efter kun halvandet år som dommer blev Tony Steele i 1995 udtaget til et FIM seminar i Prag.

Normalt er man dommer i otte til ti år før FIM kigger på en.

Nu begyndte en helt anden tilværelse for Tony og hustruen Julie Steele. Han fik en aftale med forsikringsselskabet, som indebar at han var i stand til at varetage funktionen som international FIM dommer, hvor mange forlængede weekends blev tilbragt på stations i Europa. Det var ikke kun speedway, men også 1000 meter langbane, græsbaneløb og is-speedway løb. I første omgang i lavere rangerende kvalifikations runder og f.eks. ungdomslandskampe. >>

- Jeg havde ikke store ambitioner, men ville bare gøre mit bedste hver gang jeg var dommer. Jeg har aldrig følt det som et pres, selv om jeg godt kan have sommerfugle i maven på en løbs dag. Det forsvinder altid meget hurtigt igen. Men hvis jeg ikke blev en smule nervøs, ville jeg ikke gøre mit arbejde godt nok, fortalte Tony Steele i et interview med Speedway Star, kort før hans sidste dommerjob i 2010.

I 1999 blev han dommer til det Tjekkiske grandprix i Prag.

Det blev hans debut på øverste hylde.

Og grandprix serien passede godt til Tony, som holdt af rytmen med at være ude i Europa i mange weekends i sommerhalvåret, og nød hvert enkelt lands særpræg og stemning.

Ofte var hustruen Julie med.

Langt de fleste dommere vil gerne have et fornuftigt forhold til kørerne, uden at der er tale om venskab. Et par timer før løbet gik Tony gerne en tur rundt i ryttergården og hilste på kørere, mekanikere og presse, og hvem der nu ellers kunne være tilstede, som f.eks. tidligere kørere der var inviteret som VIP gæster.

- Det var noget jeg altid gjorde for at være synlig, vise at jeg er tilstede, og mange gange var der kørere eller andre som gerne ville stille mig spørgsmål, måske om regler eller om tidligere afgørelser. Det er helt afgørende, at en dommer kan tale roligt og sagligt med alle, for under løbet går bølgerne måske så højt, at de ringer til mig, for at få en forklaring på en dom eller udelukkelse.

Ingen dommer er fejlfri, men Tony Steele havde altid bestræbt sig på at eliminere fejl og tvivl, og han så sig selv som et del af et team, som skal afvikle et speedwayløb på bedst tænkelige måde.

- I min tid har der – stort set – altid været tv dækning, og så har jeg jo haft en tv skærm oppe i boksen. Nogle dommere vil helst ikke bruge tv billederne, men jeg har altid set det som en godt redskab, til at eliminere fejl. I ny og næ har jeg endda været så privilegeret, at jeg har kunne bede om at se enkelte situationer i slowmotion et par gange mere, inden jeg skulle trykke på en af de fire udelukkelses knapper.

Efter 2010 har Tony Steele været dybt involveret som Jury medlem for FIM og en stribe af funktioner for britisk speedway, gennem Speedway Control Bureau og motorunionen ACU.

I aften skulle han have været jurypræsident, men hans minde hviler over Vojens Speedway Center.

When Tony Steele officiated his last Grand Prix in Bydgoszcz, Poland, in 2010, it was due to FIM’s age rule of 55. However, he remained involved in the sport as a member of the British ACU and the Speedway Control Bureau, as well as a FIM representative.

The three-time British World Champion Tai Woffinden writes in his biography Raw Speed that he has always found the 55-year age rule to be more harmful than beneficial to the sport.

”Tony was one of the best, if not the very best official we’ve ever had. I have no idea why a referee should be considered too old at 55. It’s not like he has to run around the track to keep an eye on the riders.”

In August, the sad news came that the world-renowned referee and official had passed away at the age of just 69.

... The curly-haired and smiling Antony Steele was born in 1955 in Leicester and was a big fan of the city’s football team from a young age. Football played a significant role in Tony’s childhood home. His family hails from Seaton Delaval, a small village north of Newcastle Upon Tyne, where several men in the Steele family played for the small but famous club Blyth Spartans.

During his school years, he often took the bus past Blackbird Road Stadium in Leicester and could see the word ”Speedway” painted on the roof of the grandstand. He had no idea that speedway would become his life.

In late 1967, the neighboring club in Long Eaton went bankrupt, and the ACU transferred the license and riders to Leicester, where there was a willingness to give the sport another chance. Thus, the Leicester Lions were born in 1968.

At that time, the football-loving Tony Steele was 13 years old, and one day a friend asked him if he wanted to go to a speedway match. It was Tuesday, April 16, in a home match against Sheffield, which Leicester won by two points, and Tony Steele became a full-fledged speedway fan.

He got a small job at Leicester, as part of the team of boys responsible for covering the track. Slowly, he took on more and more responsibility with the staff in Leicester, and because he was good with numbers, he was given the responsible job of keeping track of methanol and oil consumption in the pits.

In 1983, Leicester closed again, and Tony, who worked at a large insurance company, was asked if he wanted to join promoter Martin Rogers at Kings Lynn. However, it was too far from home, but shortly after, Rogers also took over Peterborough and now asked Tony to be the startmaster there.

”Yes, but I’ve never done that before,” replied a hesitant Steele. He became a startmaster for eight years.

In 1993, it was an advertisement in Speedway Star that changed Tony Steele’s life. The British Speedway Control Bureau advertised for new referees, and one of the members encouraged Tony Steele to apply for the job. He took the demanding course, and in May 1994, Tony made his debut in a match between Wolverhampton and Reading.

As a new referee, the 39-year-old Tony was at the right age and hit a time when FIM was looking for new referees to add to the internati-

onal list, due to the upcoming Grand Prix series. So, after just a year and a half as a referee, Tony Steele was selected in 1995 to attend a FIM seminar in Prague. Normally, one serves as a referee for eight to ten years before FIM takes notice.

Now a whole new life began for Tony and his wife, Julie Steele. He made an arrangement with the insurance company that allowed him to serve as an international FIM referee, where many extended weekends were spent at stadiums in Europe. It wasn’t just speedway, but also 1000-meter long track, grass track, and ice speedway races, initially in lower-ranking qualifying rounds and, for example, youth international matches.

”I didn’t have big ambitions, but I just wanted to do my best every time I refereed. I’ve never felt it as pressure, even though I might have butterflies in my stomach on race day. That always disappears very quickly. But if I didn’t get a little nervous, I wouldn’t do my job well enough,” Tony Steele said in an interview with Speedway Star, shortly before his last referee job in 2010.

In 1999, he officiated the Czech Grand Prix in Prague. It was his debut on the top tier.

And the Grand Prix series suited Tony, who loved the rhythm of being in Europe for many weekends during the summer and enjoyed each country’s unique atmosphere and character.

His wife, Julie, often accompanied him.

Most referees prefer to have a good working relationship with the riders without it crossing into friendship. A couple of hours before the race, Tony would often take a walk around the pits, greeting riders, mechanics, press, and anyone else present, such as former riders invited as VIP guests.

”It was something I always did to be visible, to show that I’m present, and many times there were riders or others who wanted to ask me questions, maybe about rules or previous decisions. It’s absolutely crucial that a referee can talk calmly and objectively with everyone, because during the race, emotions might run high, and they might call me to get an explanation of a decision or exclusion.”

No referee is flawless, but Tony Steele always strove to eliminate mistakes and doubts, and he saw himself as part of a team that must execute a speedway race in the best possible way.

”In my time, there has almost always been TV coverage, and so I’ve had a TV screen in the booth. Some referees prefer not to use TV images, but I’ve always seen it as a good tool to eliminate mistakes. Now and then, I’ve even been privileged enough to request to see certain situations in slow motion a couple more times before I had to press one of the four exclusion buttons.”

Since 2010, Tony Steele had been deeply involved as a Jury member for FIM and in a range of functions for British speedway through the Speedway Control Bureau and the ACU.

He was supposed to be the jury president tonight, but his memory rests over Vojens Speedway Center.
