DANISH FIM SPEEDWAY GRAND PRIX 2022TM SPONSERED BY ECCO

VELKOMMEN / WELCOMES

Both Jorge Viegas, who is president of the International Motor Union FIM, and the head of the Discovery Sports Events, Francois Ribeiro, write about a new era for international speedway, in their welcome words here in this program. And that is quite true, because here in 2022 we will see, for the first time, the initiatives that the Discovery Sports Events creates to lift speedway sport. A gigantic boost with new ceremonies around the presentation and podium, updated TV set up in the pit area, a large and audience-friendly Fan Zone, where fans, among other things, get close to the world stars, and can get photos and autographs. We must go this way. An even better TV product for the enjoyment of millions of viewers around the globe, combined with a nice experience for the many thousands of fans who have made the journey to experience a SGP Grand Prix with their own eyes. In a year, speedway sport will be 100 years old - and it will be celebrated in several ways in 2023. But in relation to the role of Danish speedway, internationally, I also believe that we are entering a new era. We have been spoiled in Denmark for 50 years, with big profiles like Ole Olsen, Erik Gundersen, Hans Nielsen, Jan O. Pedersen and Nicki Pedersen. They have made Denmark one of the sport’s most winning nations, and many in Danish speedway are now speculating who will be our next and sixth individual world champion? Who will be the standard-bearers for the next generation? Maybe we don’t know the riders’ names yet, or maybe it will be one of the guys racing for Danish success tonight; Leon Madsen, Mikkel Michelsen and Rasmus Jensen.

Leon was so close back in 2019 with silver. And while we rejoice in the triumphs of the past, we must remember to look into the future, because no one can turn back time. When I drive my car, I look out the windscreen, only rarely in the rearview mirror, and this also applies to my relationship with the speedway. We are in a new era, with a completely different global entertainment industry, with a radically changed media image, and with completely new patterns in daily family life. This is the challenge our, almost 100-year-old, sport must take seriously. The FIM knows that, the Discovery Sports Events knows that, and we know that too at Vojens Speedway Center. If we create the frame, Danish riders will probably also continue to interfere in the world’s top medal fights, in a fair contest against their colleagues from many other countries. Because the old fascination of speedway cannot be taken away from us: Four men, four motorcycles, four laps. Have a great evening. With loving speedway greetings Jacob Olsen CEO Vojens Speedway Center

HELLO AND WELCOME TO A NEW ERA OF SPEEDWAY!

At Discovery Sports Events, we fell in love with speedway from our first on-event experience and decided to take the opportunity very seriously when the FIM launched a tender process to award a 10-year promoter contract, starting this season. With 100 years of heritage and one of the best motorcycle shows on track, we know we have a fantastic opportunity to raise Speedway GP to the next level while protecting the beauty and integrity of the sport. We will invest to make speedway even stronger, satisfy our current fan base and bring the sport to a new audience – offering viewers more ways to watch the racing than ever before. These are exciting times for speedway, and we look forward to writing a glorious new chapter for the sport in partnership with the FIM. For the first time in its history, FIM Speedway is under a single promotional umbrella from grassroots to Speedway GP level. To build a strong international pyramid for the sport’s best young riders, we will introduce them to the Speedway GP stage via our SGP3 events and then the SGP2 series for under-21s. We will also be launching SGP4 in the coming years to offer our youngest riders a platform to start their careers on affordable bikes, before progressing up the pyramid. It’s great to be back at Vojens Speedway Center so soon after this iconic venue played host to the 2022 FIM Speedway of Nations in July. For Jacob Olsen and his team at Vojens to take over as local organiser and deliver four nights of fantastic racing with little over two weeks’ notice is a phenomenal achievement. It underlines the strength of this storied club, as well as the determination of everyone involved. Keeping the event in Denmark was a matter of pride for them after our Esbjerg organiser stepped down. We thank Vojens for their support in staging the FIM SON and I am sure the FIM Speedway of Denmark – Vojens, sponsored by ECCO will also be a real success too.

DANISH FIM SPEEDWAY GRAND PRIX 2022TM SPONSERED BY ECCO 11

Vojens has an incredible history in our sport, having staged the last-ever FIM Speedway World Final in 1994, won by our FIM Speedway global ambassador Tony Rickardsson. A host of greats have topped the Speedway GP podium since then, and the Speedway GP class of 2022 bids for that honour tonight. I thank you all for joining us in Vojens and I hope you enjoy the action.

FRANÇOIS RIBEIRO

HEAD OF DISCOVERY SPORTS EVENTS

12 DANISH FIM SPEEDWAY GRAND PRIX 2022TM SPONSERED BY ECCO

2022 marks the start of a new era for the FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship, as the new promoter Discovery Sports Events starts its ten-year period at the helm of the series. This new agreement builds on their existing relationship with the FIM, with the same organisation having been the promoter of the FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC) since 2015. Under its new SGP identity the championship will benefit from the huge event delivery experience that Discovery Sports Events has gained over the last fifteen years and will see many new innovations to increase the fans’ experience. This year’s SGP campaign is planned to include eleven rounds across two continents, with the aim to bring the discipline to more countries and fans through a more all year-round approach. Each event will feature fifteen permanent riders – representing seven nations – plus one local wildcard. Currently the line-up includes two substitute riders, however the FIM board’s decision on Russian riders’ licences is subject to change at any time and with immediate effect – depending on the evolution of the situation in Ukraine. This exciting new chapter in the FIM Speedway Grand Prix World Championship will take place in eight countries starting in Croatia at the end of April, Poland – four rounds in total, the Czech Republic, Germany, Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden and Australia in November. On behalf of the FIM I would like to wish our new promoter every success for the coming season and thank them for the passion and professionalism that they will bring to SGP. As with every FIM World Championship it is a huge team effort, and hence I would also like to extend my thanks to our organisers, national federations, officials, volunteers, sponsors, the media, the riders and you the fans. I truly hope it will be an exceptional season of racing.

PLAYING THE LONG GAME? FORMER WORLD NO.2 LEON MADSEN IS DETERMINED TO BE THE RIDER THAT ENDS DENMARK’S 14-YEAR WAIT FOR A SPEEDWAY GP WORLD CHAMPION, BUT HE ADMITS HIS FOCUS IS ON DELIVERING GOLD IN 2023. THE 2018 SPEEDWAY EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP WINNER HAS NOT MISSED A SINGLE SPEEDWAY GP SEMI-FINAL THIS SEASON. He went into the Betard FIM Speedway GP of Poland – Wroclaw placed second in the standings – 22 points behind Poland’s Bartosz Zmarzlik. But second place and 18 championship points at the Olympic Stadium on August 27 saw him close the gap to 16 points on Zmarzlik, turning up the heat nicely ahead of tonight’s FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens, sponsored by ECCO. With three rounds to race and 60 points up for grabs in total, Madsen would appear to be back in the game. However, the Czestochowa rider insists his focus is on bringing home the sport’s biggest prize next year as he puts plans in place now to ensure man and machine are in tip-top condition for 2023. He said: “Theoretically it is still possible I could win this year, but there are a lot of points I have to pull back and our focus has switched to next season.

“We tested some new equipment in Wroclaw and we are definitely going in the right direction. I’m sure when we start up next season, we will have some more tools in the toolbox. Hopefully you will see me start the season stronger than I did this year. Then I will be more able to fight for the gold medal. “In the team we were talking about things before Cardiff and we made the decision that if we lost to Bartek there, it’s game over and the gap is too big. Theoretically, it is still possible. “It is definitely tough, but I am very positive after Wroclaw. There are some more tools coming out of the toolbox in the next couple of rounds and I am sure you are going to see me be much stronger, so anything can happen. I am still giving it my all and doing my best to catch Bartosz. If I have three more meetings like I had in Wroclaw, then we are going to catch him.” Madsen is mindful that the race for gold isn’t the only fight he has on his hands. Back-to-back Speedway GP

DANISH FIM SPEEDWAY GRAND PRIX 2022TM SPONSERED BY ECCO 23

winner Dan Bewley has gained 40 points over the last two rounds in Cardiff and Wroclaw, rocketing from 11th overall to third place on 84 points – just eight behind Madsen, who has 92. Even if the Dane cannot reel in Zmarzlik, he at least wants to hold on to second spot. He said: “Dan gained points on me in Wroclaw. I have to watch out for second place now. I know it will be hard to catch Bartek, but I would at least like to finish the season with the silver medal. That would still be very nice.” Madsen has had a mixed Speedway GP record at Vojens. He reached the semi-finals with 10 points in 2021 but fell short with seven in 2019. A final appearance at Denmark’s home of speedway may have eluded him on those nights, but Madsen is determined to deliver a big performance in front of what’s set to be a passionate home crowd. “Of course you always want to do well in your home country,” Madsen said. “I haven’t had the best meetings in Vojens, but why not try and turn it around and finally have a good one? It would be nice.” Madsen tends to deliver his best performances on the fast and furious Polish tracks, rather than the tight and technical Vojens circuit. “Vojens is maybe not my favourite track,” he conceded. “It is a smaller track. It is a little bit harder to pass. But I look forward to it. Hopefully it will be a packed stadium with a lot of Danish fans supporting us Danish riders. Hopefully we can put on a good performance.” Victory in Vojens may prompt Madsen to reconsider his timetable as he bids to join Ole Olsen, Hans Nielsen, Erik Gundersen, Jan O Pedersen and Nicki Pedersen in the elite club of Danish world champions. While Madsen is already putting in the work ahead of the 2023 Speedway GP season, don’t assume he has given up on 2022 just yet. He said: “Hopefully it will be a beautiful night where I get more points than Bartek and end up on the podium, preferably on the top step. “It’s another day and another tough meeting. The GP is always tough. But I love it and I feel very good right now. I said before Cardiff that I am in very good shape and I feel confident. After Wroclaw, I feel even more confident with the new equipment we are testing.” Madsen won three Speedway GPs in 2019 – the opening round in Warsaw and the last two in Cardiff and Torun – scoring a 21-point maximum at the Marian Rose Motoarena in the final round. Zmarzlik just held on and pipped him to the world title by two points that year. While the Pole is undoubtedly the favourite to prevail again, when it comes to finishing a season fast, Madsen knows exactly what it takes.

DANISH FIM SPEEDWAY GRAND PRIX 2022TM SPONSERED BY ECCO 25

Men Thomsen gjorde regning uden vært.

THOMSEN’S TURBULENT SUMMER

DANISH FIM SPEEDWAY GRAND PRIX 2022TM SPONSERED BY ECCO 27

With two individual Danish championships, the 27-yearold Anders Thomsen has written well into the Danish royal line of speedway champions. Now it’s about international success, but Thomsen is the first to acknowledge that it is a step that requires hard work. By Ib Søby

The crash happened in the very first heat of the match between SES - Sonderjylland Elite Speedway and Slangerup Speedway Klub, at Anders Thomsen’s Danish home track Vojens Speedway Center.

The next big goal was the Speedway of Nations – the new format for the Team and Pair World Cup – which was to be run on Danish soil in the last week of July.

And there was something at stake, because the direct opponent from Slangerup was Grand Prix competitor and national team colleague Mikkel Michelsen.

The goal gained even more weight, when the organization in Esbjerg collapsed, and the gigantic event was saved by Vojens Speedway Center, with only 17 days’ notice.

On the varm June evening, everyone in the stadium knew that Thomsen and Michelsen would not give up one millimeter on the track, and indeed they almost stuck to each other in the seconds after the starting rope had been blown up, and hammered into the Airfence in the first turn.

Anders Thomsen could help write Danish speedway history, because now the Speedway of Nations suddenly had to be run on his Danish home track, where he has also had won two DM titles in 2020 and 2021.

While Anders Thomsen was taken for examination at Aabenraa Hospital, Mikkel Michelsen hobbled around the pits with great pain in one knee, and went straight to a private clinic in Poland. The crash was a costly experience for both Thomsen and Michelsen. The very next week there was the final in the individual Danish Championship in Holsted, and while Michelsen withdrew completely, Anders Thomsen stood up - as the reigning double Danish champion - but with severe after-effects of concussion and the injury to his shoulder.

The last time the Danish national team won World Cup gold at home was back in 2008. But Thomsen went into a new nightmare. The Danish national coach Hans Nielsen selected the three Danish Grand Prix drivers, Leon Madsen, Mikkel Michelsen and Anders Thomsen. However, there are only two racers on the track in the Speedway of Nations, and here Anders Thomsen surprisingly not was chosen. The atmosphere in the Danish squad was bad leading up to the S.O.N final.

But Anders Thomsen defended himself bravely in Holsted. He was stumbling close to a hat trick, but Holsted’s Rasmus Jensen took – fully deserved – the title, while Thomsen had to settle for silver, ahead of veteran Kenneth Bjerre. Only three days after the Danish final came the first Grand Prix victory. And it should not detract from the achievement, that it happened at the Edward Jancarz Stadium in Gorzow, where Thomsen currently races in the best Polish league, because he defeated his two Gorzow colleagues Bartosz Zmarzlik and Martin Vaculik in the final. The spectacular tv images of the lap of honor in underpants went around the world.

The three Danish racers - who each have their own chemistry - could not muster a team spirit, and allegedly, the national coach was pressured by Leon Madsen to start the final with Madsen himself - and Michelsen. The Danish press corps met a deeply disappointed Anders Thomsen in the Fan Zone before the final, where he expressed; Apparently I’m not good enough. In the first heat of the final, Denmark got five points over the Czech Republic’s Vaclav Milik and Jan Kvech – who are good, but not Grand Prix stars. And already here, a disturbance arose in the Danish camp. Yes, it was ok, but not convincing. >>

Speedway of Nations is all about not getting 0 for last place. The point system is 4-3-2-0. In the next heat, the Danes beat Finland 7-2 and then Anders Thomsen knew that his chances of getting on the track had dropped considerably.

He did not want to be the one who flopped the Danish chances. It was instead Leon Madsen’s lot, after a crash against Zmarzlik and Janowski, and an exclusion, which ended the Danish medal dreams. As you know, Australia won, ahead of Great Britain and Sweden.

In the third start, the Danes again made 5 points against the 2021 World Champions from Great Britain, and it looked quite reasonable, except for Thomsen, who could also see Madsen and Michelsen beat Australia 6-3.

Three days later Anders Thomsen again was in Vojens, for the SES match against GSK Grindsted. But in his fifth heat he was hit by another crash, which tore a ligament in the injured shoulder, he had been racing with since the match against Slangerup in June.

The final was a dramatic and very close affair.

What should have been such a joyous summer was now beginning to look like a grey winter day, and a race against time in relation to the Cardiff Grand Prix and Grand Prix Challenge in Glasgow in August.

Therefore, the 2-7 defeat to Sweden was very expensive for the Danes, who still had the life-giving top 3 position, before the decisive final within reach. All the audience and the Danish and international press people now expected that Anders Thomsen would get the chance on the field against Poland. But that didn’t happen, because Thomsen himself turned down Hans Nielsen, as he believed, that it was too late to enter the match and is doing something reasonable.

But as Thomsen himself said, after the Speedway of Nations disappointment: - I don’t want to complain about circumstances I am not in control of. My best motivation is to answer again on the track.

SES – THE NEW KID IN TOWN

In 2021, Vojens returned to the Danish Speedway League. It happened with the professional team SES - Sonderjylland Elite Speedway, which took Team- silver in its first season, and won the extra Metal4 cup tournament. By Ib Søby Since 1975, Vojens Speedway Center has been known worldwide as the organizer of over 60 international events. World finals, Grand Prix, and classics races such as TOMS Goldbar Race and other events. On the other hand, Vojens Speedway Club has not had a particularly big influence on the best Danish league. It has been a tumultuous life, with Team bronze from 2010, standing as the best result so far.

Right from day one, the SES team should consist of a combination of experience and local talent. The two-time Danish champion and Grand Prix racer Anders Thomsen, together with Nicolai Klindt, were selected for leading roles in the new team, together with the extremely talented young trio from the Skaerbaek area, Mads Hansen, and the brothers Jonas and Jesper Knudsen.

Until last year.

For this season, the young Benjamin Basso arrived at SES, and has shown great strength. The German star Kai Huckenbeck has also left his mark on the two seasons that SES now have been on the track.

With the start-up of SES - Sonderjylland Elite Speedway, Jacob Olsen and the staff at Speed1Way have clearly marked that this part of Denmark must compete with, and be among the leaders in the Speedway League. Many other Danish clubs such as Holsted, Region Varde, or Esbjerg, have distinguished traditions and a cupboard with far more trophies than the team from Vojens.

- We are not going for Gold at any cost. It is more important for SES that we develop and strengthen our young talents, and then the results will probably come by themselves, says Helge Frimodt Pedersen.

Holsted Tigers have amazing 15 Team titles!

With Claus Orts and Peter Bondergaard as team leaders, SES – Sonderjylland Elite Speedway has, nevertheless, been at the top of the League this season.

- We are in the long, tough stretch, where we have to build a new fan culture, with regular top-class races on Wednesdays. The Danish league has a lot to offer, and is an important part of Danish speedway development, where we would like to be at the forefront, says Company Manager Helge Frimodt Pedersen.

It has given an important fight with Holsted Tigers for the victory in the regular series, which triggers home field advantage for the Team final on Wednesday 21. of September

DENGANG JOHN LENNON GIK TIL SPEEDWAY I 2023 udkommer Ib Søbys nye speedwaybog SPEEDWAY 100 fordi sporten fylder 100 år. Her tilbragte John Lennon både weekends og sommerferier.

mere musikinteresseret og dannede bandet The Quarryman, og senere The Beatles.

BACK WHEN JOHN LENNON WENT TO THE SPEEDWAY

In 2023 Ib Soby’s new speedway book SPEEDWAY 100 - will be published, because the sport turns 100 years old. Here is a small excerpt:

As a boy in Liverpool, John Lennon was closely related to his seven-year-older cousin Stanley Parkes, who lived in the coastal town of Fleetwood, north of Blackpool. John Lennon spent both weekends and summer holidays here. They went to the cinema together, but also took the bus to the somewhat larger and more vibrant Blackpool, where holidaying Englishmen flocked during the summer to bathe, drink and experience the great variety stars of the time such as Dickie Valentine, Joe Loss and Max Bygraves. It was a happy years when the horrors of the Second World War had to be forgotten. But the two boys were also taken up by speedway, because for four years, 1948-52, the local football stadium in Fleetwood was converted into a speedway stadium, where the Fleetwood Flyers Speedway Club participated in the British 2nd Division. The club in Fleetwood was a breakaway from nearby club Wigan Warriors, and despite sporadic success, the Flyers could easily gather over 10,000 spectators for home games at Highbury Stadium in Fleetwood. Often John and Stanley were on the rafters to experience the local heroes in furious races against clubs from eg Glasgow, Sheffield and Birmingham. Both were avid autograph hunters, and had the signature of most drivers.

These were profiles such as Norman Hargreaves, Don Potter and Wilff Plant. The later double world champion Peter Craven also drove a single race at Fleetwood. According to several sources, Stanley Parkes also took John to TT motorcycle races out on the Isle of Man, to which there were daily ferry connections from both Fleetwood and Liverpool. Stanley Parkes had lost his father shortly after World War II, but his mother Elizabeth remarried in 1949. The Parkes family then moved to Glasgow, but Stanley and John remained in close contact for many years to come. Also after John Lennon became more interested in music as a teenager, and formed the band The Quarryman, and later The Beatles. As you know, John Lennon was killed in New York in 1980, while Stanley Parkes lived in Scotland until 2016. There is no evidence to suggest that Paul McCartney has also flirted with speedway sports, but in 1972 – after the break with Lennon and The Beatles – he and Wings released the album called Red Rose Speedway. But I guess that’s another story.

FRIVILLIGE SKABTE

SPEEDWAY OF NATIONS

VOLUNTEERS CREATED

THE SPEEDWAY OF NATIONS

- We will show that we stand together in Vojens. That is what one woman said, when she volunteered at the FIM Speedway of Nations. She had read in the newspaper, that Vojens Speedway Center took over the hosting with only 17 days’ notice in July, after the collapse in Esbjerg. It may well be that Denmark did not stand at the top of the podium after the S.O.N final on Saturday 30 July, but the almost 150 volunteers, and other helpers in and around the sport did, those who, every day, made a huge effort.

Because it is necessary to have many volunteers to run such a large event, with four World Championship races in four days. In addition to the many well-known officials from Vojens Speedway Club and our loyal associations who often help out, there were inquiries from speedway clubs in Esbjerg, Grindsted and Varde. At the same time, several citizens from both Vojens and Haderslev contacted the Vojens Speedway Center, and the staff got hold of helpers from families and friends, to neighbors and colleagues.

It is all about numerous functions; from the welcome center, parking attendants, ticket and program sellers, ticket scanners, security, catering for several hundred people involved, runners, toilet paper changers and e.g. cleanup and cleaning, and many more. - We owe every single person, who was part of Speedway of Nations, a very big thank you, says Event Manager Maiken Friis Krüger. - It shows that we stand together, when it really matters here in Southern Jutland. The willingness to skip vacations and jump in at short notice, also tells me something about the sporting and cultural

focal point Vojens Speedway Center is developing into, says Maiken Friis Krüger. The events clapped and the plaudits, from both the FIM and Discovery Events, were overwhelming, as the Speedway of Nations ended - historically completed in just 17 days.

BARTOSZ ZMARZLIK

Poland’s first-ever double world champion, Bartosz Zmarzlik is making a career out of rewriting the FIM Speedway Grand Prix history books. Zmarzlik was schooled at his local club Gorzow, racing with Polish great Tomasz Gollob in his early years. But the pupil is now rapidly emerging as the master. Since joining the series full-time for 2016, Bartek has amassed an astonishing five FIM Speedway World Championship medals in six years, winning gold in 2019 and 2020, silver in 2018 and 2021 and bronze in 2016. He fell just three points short of becoming the first-ever SpeedwayGP rider to win three straight world titles in 2021. Despite winning five Speedway GP rounds over a breathtaking season, he was pipped to the gold medal by Artem Laguta. Zmarzlik will be keen to get back on top of the rostrum in 2022 and join the club of triple world champions.

MACIEJ JANOWSKI

Polish star Maciej Janowski has established himself as one of the sport’s biggest names since becoming a full-time FIM Speedway Grand Prix rider for 2015. Janowski is still fighting for his first Speedway GP World Championship medal, having finished fourth in the standings four times in five seasons. The podium is surely not far away, but Janowski already has three FIM Speedway World Cup gold medals and an FIM Speedway Under-21 World Championship to his name. He’s also a double Polish champion. Janowski stormed to victory at round one of the 2021 Speedway GP series in Prague and also raced to league title triumphs with his hometown team Wroclaw in Poland and Swedish side Dackarna - ending long championship waits for both clubs. He will be determined to complete his own Speedway GP title quest in 2022.

FREDRIK LINDGREN

Sweden’s sole FIM Speedway Grand Prix star for 2022, Freddie Lindgren has cemented his position as his country’s top rider since returning to the World Championship full-time in 2017. The double Swedish champion has stormed to two Speedway GP bronze medals in four seasons to establish himself as a regular world-title contender. Lindgren finished fifth in the 2021 series – level on points with Maciej Janowski in fourth, but with fewer Speedway GP wins than the Pole. That was some achievement for a rider who revealed he has been battling long Covid throughout the past two years. The 2015 FIM Speedway World Cup winner will hope to complete his quest for a Speedway GP World Championship with a clean bill of health in 2022. Lindgren is now one of Speedway GP’s most experienced stars, having scored more Speedway GP World Championship points, made more Speedway GP appearances and raced more Speedway GP heats than any other member of the 2022 line-up.

TAI WOFFINDEN

Tai Woffinden is his country’s most successful speedway rider, having become Britain’s first-ever triple world champion in 2018. He famously won the 2013 Speedway GP World Championship as a 500/1 outsider with the bookmakers, before lifting title No.2 in 2015. He has won an incredible six Speedway GP World Championship medals in nine seasons – three golds, two silvers and one bronze. Woffinden added another world title to his collection in Manchester, helping Great Britain win their first world team championship for 32 years at the 2021 FIM Speedway of Nations Final. A crash forced Woffy out of day two of the Final, but his words of wisdom ensured young guns Robert Lambert, Dan Bewley and Tom Brennan delivered the gold medals in his absence. After a sixth-place finish in the 2021 Speedway GP series, Woffy will be seeking a rostrum return in 2022.

After being crowned Speedway European Championship winner in 2018, Madsen was handed a Speedway GP wild card for 2019. The Dane made a huge impact, topping the FIM Warsaw Speedway GP podium on his full-time series debut, before going on to win the FIM British Speedway GP in Cardiff and the FIM Torun Speedway GP on his way to World Championship silver. Madsen won the Torun round with a seven-ride maximum, but fell just two points short of world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik. Despite finishing fifth in 2020 and seventh in 2021, he still reached the FIM Speedway of Nations rostrum, winning bronze medals with Denmark in both seasons.

MAX FRICKE

The 2016 FIM Speedway Under-21 world champion made his fulltime FIM Speedway Grand Prix debut in 2020 after finishing third at the 2019 FIM GP Challenge in Gorican. While his first season was a baptism of fire, Fricke still fought his way to a solid 10th place, claiming his first-ever win at 2020 FIM Torun Speedway GP round seven to all but seal a wild card pick for 2021. Fricke built on that opportunity by finishing eighth – making him the highest-placed Australian rider. He also took second spot at the 2021 FIM GP Challenge in Zarnovica to secure qualification for 2022. Fricke reached five semi-finals from 11 rounds in 2021 and did not finish any Speedway GP with less than six points. The two-time, reigning Australian champion is making strong progress in the sport and will hope to continue that.

JASON DOYLE

After years doubling up between Britain’s top two leagues, Jason Doyle finished second at the 2014 FIM GP Challenge in Lonigo, Italy to earn his FIM Speedway Grand Prix debut. The Aussie quickly made himself at home by finishing fifth in the 2015 Speedway GP World Championship, before launching a breathtaking title charge in 2016. Despite winning four Speedway GP rounds, Doyle’s championship dreams were cruelly dashed when he crashed out of the penultimate round in Torun. But he hit back in epic style in 2017. Despite racing most of the season with a broken foot, Speedway GP’s man of steel stormed to an unforgettable world-title win, sealing gold in front of an ecstatic home crowd in Melbourne – winning the FIM Australian Speedway GP too for good measure. Doyle finished ninth in last year’s Speedway GP series, requiring a wild card to retain his place in the line-up for the first time in his career. He will be determined to climb much higher in 2022.

#505

ROBERT LAMBERT

Great Britain hero Robert Lambert ended 2021 on a huge high after leading his country to its first world team title in 32 years at the FIM Speedway of Nations Final in Manchester. Despite captain Tai Woffinden crashing out on day one, Lambert stepped up as skipper, inspiring Dan Bewley and Tom Brennan to gold with victory over Poland in the Grand Final. It’s a result that will ensure their place in British racing legend. Lambert’s 2020 Speedway European Championship win made him the first rider to qualify automatically for the Speedway GP series by winning the continental championship. He enjoyed a solid Speedway GP debut season in 2021, finishing 10th in the World Championship and receiving a wild card for 2022. With a world team gold medal under his belt, he heads into 2022 racing to continue his fantastic progress on the shale.

ANDERS THOMSEN

Double Danish champion Anders Thomsen made his full-time FIM Speedway Grand Prix debut in 2021 after being handed a permanent wild card. This opportunity came on the back of his Danish Championship triumph at Vojens in 2020, with Thomsen successfully defending his crown last year. And the rider promptly underlined his potential on the world stage by making his first Speedway GP final in Togliatti, finishing third, as well as reaching semi-finals in Prague, Lublin and Malilla. Thomsen took 11th place in the 2021 Speedway GP series and received a wild card for 2022. With a useful year’s experience under his belt, he will be keen to take full advantage and impress in his second Speedway GP season. Thomsen will hope to make the most of home advantage in the Gorzow and Danish Speedway GPs, as he races for host clubs Stal Gorzow and Vojens respectively. But he will be keen to deliver big performances throughout the series as he continues his rise in the sport.

MARTIN VACULIK

Slovakia’s first and only FIM Speedway Grand Prix star Martin Vaculik made an unforgettable World Championship debut, when he won the 2012 FIM Gorzow Speedway GP after replacing the injured Jaroslaw Hampel in the meeting. Vaculik was handed a place in the 2013 series, but was then absent from the Speedway GP line-up for three seasons, before re-qualifying as runner-up at the 2016 FIM GP Challenge in Vetlanda, Sweden. History repeated itself as Vaculik won on his comeback at the 2017 FIM Slovenian Speedway GP in Krsko. He topped the podium at the 2018 FIM Gorzow Speedway GP – just four months after suffering a serious ankle injury at British track Swindon. Vaculik took a career-best fifth place in the 2019 World Championship, but finished ninth in 2020, before an injury-hit campaign left him 12th in 2021. He will be keen to get back on track in 2022.

Polish racer Pawel Przedpelski makes his full-time FIM Speedway Grand Prix debut in 2022 after qualifying as winner of the FIM GP Challenge at Slovak circuit Zarnovica in August 2021. It crowned a life-changing week for Przedpelski as his partner Michalina gave birth to their first daughter Rozalka just five days earlier. Przedpelski is no stranger to the Speedway GP World Championship, having made a number of appearances as FIM Torun Speedway GP wild card. He scored 13 points over two nights at the 2021 Marian Rose Motoarena double-header. The Torun-born racer rides for his hometown team in Poland’s PGE Ekstraliga. Along with Torun team mate Jack Holder and Dan Bewley, Przedpelski is one of three riders in the 2022 Speedway GP line-up who have never previously been a full-time member of the series. After impressing in the Polish and Swedish leagues in recent years, he will be keen to make the most of the biggest opportunity of his career so far.

MIKKEL MICHELSEN

Danish racer Mikkel Michelsen was the first rider to book their place in the 2022 FIM Speedway Grand Prix series after sealing his second Speedway European Championship last July – adding to his 2019 SEC triumph. Michelsen followed that up by making his national senior team debut at the 2021 FIM Speedway of Nations - helping Denmark to the bronze medal at the Final in Manchester last October. He made his full-time Speedway GP debut in 2020, finishing 14th, but it’s fair to say the opportunity came at short notice. He was called up just two weeks before the season started to replace the injured Martin Smolinski. After sitting out the 2021 series, he’s back having had more preparation time than any other rider – and he’s determined to take full advantage. Michelsen can’t wait to take his second shot at the Speedway GP series.

Dudek made a massive impact in his full-time debut series in 2017, finishing second to Jason Doyle in an epic Speedway GP World Championship race, which went all the way to the final round in Melbourne. This silver medal made Dudek the first rider in FIM Speedway Grand Prix history to reach the World Championship’s top two in their full-time debut season. The Pole has been hampered by injuries since then and saw his 2020 wrecked by a leg injury in the middle of a hectic run of double-header Speedway GP weekends. Aussie ace Jack Holder is no stranger to the FIM Speedway Grand Prix pits, having been a regular visitor over the years with his 2012 world-title-winning older brother Chris. But now Jack gets his chance to take the spotlight in his own right on the back of two sensational seasons in the world’s top leagues. After finishing second in the 2020 Australian Championship, he played a key role in Gorzow reaching the play-off final of Poland’s PGE Ekstraliga, as well as helping Torun win promotion back into the top flight – leading the First Division average charts in the process. He continued his strong form with Torun in 2021, as well as helping British club Sheffield reach the SGB Premiership play-off semi-finals. It was only a matter of time before Holder’s Speedway GP opportunity came and the man due to serve as this year’s first substitute rider has been elevated into the line-up.

Great Britain hero Dan Bewley wrote his name into the history books when he helped his country to FIM Speedway of Nations world-title glory last October. And now he gets his chance to shine in Speedway GP after Artem Laguta and Emil Sayfutdinov’s licences were suspended by the FIM until further notice – promoting second substitute Bewley into the line-up. With Bewley joining Tai Woffinden and Robert Lambert in the field, it is the first time Great Britain has had three riders in the Speedway GP line-up since Mark Loram, Scott Nicholls and Lee Richardson contested the 2004 series. Bewley has proved more than a match for the sport’s biggest names in recent seasons, helping Polish club Wroclaw end their 15-year wait for a PGE Ekstraliga championship in 2021, as well as leading Belle Vue to the SGB Premiership Grand Final. There are few things more spectacular in speedway than Bewley on the charge, and now he gets the chance to take his promising career to the next level.

FACTS Speedway GP was launched in 1995 – replacing FIM Speedway World Finals, which saw the world champion crowned on a single night. The first Speedway GP event took place at Polish club Wroclaw on May 23, 1995 and it was won by Polish great Tomasz Gollob. Rickardsson, Danish rider Nicki Pedersen and Polish hero Bartosz Zmarzlik are Rickardsson did it twice – in 1998-1999 and in 2001-2002.

THE BIKES Unlike in other motorcycle sports, speedway bikes have NO BRAKES – riders make their turns by power sliding through the corners. Speedway bikes have 500cc engines and run on pure methanol – a clean-burning fuel which delivers breathtaking performance. Bikes accelerate off the start line faster than a Formula 1 car! Rear tyres could be used for as few as one or two races as teams seek that fresh edge to ensure ultimate grip off the start line. Some riders opt to use a new tyre for every heat – others use a rear tyre for two races, turning it after its first race to get a fresh edge. Riders can bring as many bikes as they wish to a Speedway GP round – two are placed in the pits, with any others held in a standby area near the pits. Riders usually bring three bikes. Every bike has one fixed gear, with teams able to change these sprockets between races in their search for speed. Riders and their teams can make other adjustments to the bike including changing the ignition timing, switching the carburettor jet and moving the rear wheel back or forward in a bid to increase or reduce traction to suit track conditions. Engine tuners also play a key role in boosting speed – servicing motors and ensuring they are fitted with parts that deliver high performance and can endure the extreme pressures they face in a speedway race. Motors are also fitted with rev limiters to protect the engines and increase their service life.

QUALIFYING PRACTICE Qualifying practice offers riders an opportunity to secure first choice of starting number, which allows them to select the set of starting positions they feel will suit them best for that night’s Speedway GP event. All 16 starting numbers ensure every rider starts from each of the four gates at least once. But they will start from one gate twice – and a big performance in qualifying practice hands them the best chance to ensure they have the right starting positions at the right time. This can be a huge advantage later that day! Riders will take to the track in groups of three and will have three blocks of two minutes clock the fastest flying laps they can. The rider who records the fastest lap over the session earns first choice of starting number for the evening’s Speedway GP event, with the second-placed rider choosing next and the rider ranked 16th selecting last.

RACING RULES Four riders line up in each race, each wearing a different helmet colour – red, blue, white or yellow. The rider in red starts on the inside in gate one, with blue starting from gate two, white on gate three and yellow lining up in gate four on the outside. The countdown to a race begins when the FIM referee starts the two-minute clock. At the end of this two-minute deadline, riders must be at the tapes and ready to race – otherwise they face being disqualified. Once the four riders have been lined up by the start marshal, the referee turns on the green light to put them under starter’s orders. The tapes will then be released by a randomised electronic system. If riders touch the starting tapes, they are disqualified. If a rider is adjudged by the referee to have moved before the tapes lifted, they are handed an official warning. If they move or touch the tapes again during the same Speedway GP event, they are automatically disqualified. When the tapes lift, an intense minute of action gets underway as four riders battle it out over four furious laps. If a rider or riders fall, and the race is stopped, the FIM referee will disqualify the rider they deem to have caused the stoppage. If the incident occurs on the first turn, the referee has the option to invite all of the riders back for the restart if they believe no-one was at fault. With 23 intense races in store, get ready for a dramatic night of Speedway GP action as the world’s top riders go wheel-to-wheel!
