Man is charged with Irene White’s murder

A 34-year-old man was remanded in custody charged with the murder of Dundalk woman Irene White almost 12 years ago. Anthony Lambe from Annadrumman, Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan appeared before a sitting of Dundalk District Court on Saturday afternoon where he was charged with the murder of Ms White, a mother-ofthree, on 6 April 2005 at Ice House, Demesne Rd, Dundalk. He was initially arrested on Friday afternoon at 1:30pm and brought to Dundalk Garda station. The court heard that Anthony Lambe, a student in Maynooth, said ‘I’m very sorry’ when the charge of murder was initially read out to him in Dundalk Garda station. During the court
proceedings on Saturday afternoon Lambe cried as Judge Denis McLoughlin stated that he would be remanded in Cloverhill prison under protective custody until Friday. Protective custody was advised after the court heard from Inspector Pat Marry who expressed fears for Lambe’s safety noting that he felt ‘he might be a vulnerable person at this stage’. Irene White was stabbed to death on April 6, 2005, in her house on the Demesne Road beside Ice House Hill Park just minutes after she had returned home having left her children to school. The 43 year old’s body was found by her mother Maureen who discovered Ms White’s body lying in the kitchen floor. Maureen had lived in a mobile home at the Continued on Page 2

while the second half comprised of the fashion show. Fashionably Talented was put together by Transition Year students in the school who worked closely in tandem with teachers Ultan Henry, Vicky Muckian and Linda McCusker during Business Study classes. Costumes for the talent show were put
together by students with the help of art teachers Carmel Clyne, Leanne Mullen and Caoimhe Woods. All aspects of the show from advertising to sponsorship were carried out by the students while they also mentored younger class groups in preparation for auditions for the show. In total there were 19 talent acts and 36

that they saw in the National Museum of Ireland, including the Tara Brooch and the Ardagh and Derrynaflan Chalices. Art teacher Aine McEneaney was delighted that the girls were so attentive and that they enjoyed the trip. “We have so many fabulous art galleries and museums just down the road that cost nothing to visit. It is a lovely part of my job to introduce these places to our students.”

A local man is celebrating a major European food award for the quality of sausages he has produced at his restaurant in Kerry. Dermot Brennan, originally from Gibstown, Ardee, has won Champion of Ireland 2016 for Best Pork Sausage at the prestigious Fins Goustiers European Championships. Held annually in Alençon, Normandy, France, they are widely regarded as one of the most prestigious awards for processed pork products. The awards are only open to artisan butchers who produce their own products. Sixteen products from Ireland competed for the title and the competing sausages were judged on three criteria - appearance, seasoning and taste. gree saddleback outdoor pigs five years ago on twenty acres of land one kilometre from the hotel. Speaking after the win, Dermot said, “The unique environment where our pigs live gives the meat its
distinctive and very special flavour. We are situated two kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean which gives our pork its unique flavour from the salt coming in off Kenmare Bay. The high salt levels and iodine-rich content of these plants
and grasses that our pigs feed on make the muscle cells in the flesh retain more moisture so the meat is juicier and melt-in-the-mouth tender, a taste that has been largely forgotten in today’s mass produced pork.”
Drink drive accused waits on decision A man who was over the limit for driving will have to wait to see if he avoids a conviction after his case was put back for consideration at Dundalk District Court. Brian Collins of 34 Forkhill Road, Cloghogue, Newry, argued that the 20-minute observation period prior to giving a sample should not include the time when the prisoner is being processed for the custody record. Barrister, Martin Dully, also stated that his client’s arrest was unlawful as the Garda had not properly formed his opinion that the driver was under the influence, and that inconsistencies in the evidence of Gardai create a doubt. Judge Flann Brennan adjourned the case to March 1 to allow him to consider the judgement in a similar case. Evidence was given that at 3.10am on November 6, 2015, Gardai came across a

The Fine Gael TD for Louth says he has received assurances from the Minister for Social Protection, Leo Varadkar, that there is no proposal to introduce a charge of any description. “I was most concerned to see recent media reports mooting the possibility of a surcharge on the free travel pass, knowing what a lifeline it is for many vulnerable people here in Louth. Flashed at Gardai after night out A man who thought he was flashing his backside at friends ended up flashing at Gardai after he had too much to drink on a Christmas night out. As a result, Conor Connolly of Roodstown, Ardee, appeared before Dundalk District Court where he pleaded guilty to public order charges. Evidence was given that at 3.30am on December 24 last year Mr Connolly was highly intoxicated, aggressive and was kicking a
shop window barrier. He flashed at Gardai and gave his brother’s details. Solicitor, Barry Callan, stated that his client, who had two previous convictions, had been out for a Christmas night after finishing work when he had more drink than he would usually take. He explained that when he heard a car beep he presumed it was his friends and flashed before realising it was Gardai. Mr Callan add-
ed that the defendant claimed he had given his correct details but he was found to have his brother’s ID when searched. He added that Mr Connolly had €100 to offer as a contribution to the court and asked to be given a chance. Judge Flann Brennan stated that as this was his first offence of this nature he would find the facts proven and dismiss but warned Mr Connolly to be careful about his drinking and to keep the peace in future.
Dundalk Salmon Anglers Association plead for more brown tags The new fishing season has begun and Dundalk Salmon Anglers Association have appealed to the Government to issue more brown tags for both young and elderly anglers. Although the River Fane is open for the fishing of salmon and seatrout it has a catch and release policy which means that anglers are not allowed to kill salmon or seatrout. They must fish with a single, barbless hook and not fish with a worm. There
is a brown tag system in place where a limited number of brown tags are handed out which enable the angler to retain their fish. According to Roddy Minogue, chairman of the Dundalk Salmon Anglers Association, more brown tags need to be made available to help encourage both young and elderly anglers to enjoy fishing. “Our club, like many others have encouraged catch and release on our waters for many years now. There is no doubt that
the problem of declining stocks must be addressed but stopping a young angler or an elderly angler from sitting along the river bank fishing with a worm is not the answer. “As it stands these fishermen are breaking the law if they fish with a worm and I would appeal for the laws to be loosened to allow for these young and elderly fishermen to enjoy an afternoon on the river banks. “These anglers need to be
looked after and we need to tackle the bigger problems facing us such as poachers, pollution and deep sea trawlers which have seen salmon stock diminish over the years,” explained Roddy. Dundalk Salmon Anglers Association is one of a few clubs operating on the River Fane. They control the fishing rights from Knockbridge down to the sea at Blackrock along with a small fishery upstream. They have overseen the development
of our fisheries over the years, opening access routes, constructing styles, bridges and carparks allowing anglers easy access to enjoy days and evenings fishing and being at one with nature. Dundalk Salmon Anglers Association is open for membership and encourage both young and old to come to their fisheries and enjoy the company of the group and nature. Sean comes out on top in close finish Count-back was needed to separate the four golfers who returned best of the day scores of 32pts in last Sunday’s 13 Hole Singles Stableford competition. Last week’s winner Kenneth Cairns (17) was among the quartet but he failed to make the podium and had to settle for winning Category 2. However, two prizes from the opening two weeks of the year isn’t a bad return. Sean Hession, now playing off five after a very consistent 2016, was the man who edged Cairns off the podium with a score of 17pts for the final nine holes played, which because of ongoing course improvement work was the fifth to the 10th and the 16th to the 18th. John McKeever (11) is a player who was starting to get the measure of the course towards the end of last year and was an overall winner in November. He went close to a second victory on Sunday but came up short as his count-back score of 19pts was three less than Brian Mernagh’s 22pts. That return of 12pts from the final four holes proved crucial and gave Mernagh his first win of 2017. In addition to Cairns, the other category winners were Conall Mudock (8) and Ray Pepper (20) while Maurice Murphy (3) took the gross prize with 26pts, the equivalent of level par. The Tournament Committee will run a Winter League team event from February 5 to April 2. The entry fee is €5 and the entry box is located in the bar. The closing date for entries is January 29 at 6pm.
Neil is helping migrants improve English skills with new initiative A completely free service from ‘Failte Isteach’ aims to break down the barriers migrants face by teaching them some basic English which will help promote integration and make their lives easier. Neil McArdle is one of the volunteers who will be teaching English and he says he was moved to help out having seen the increase of foreign nationals all around the town in recent years. “These free classes are designed to promote integration and break down barriers and offer migrants a chance to learn some basic English. These centres are all over Ireland and I think
dance and cuisine and open up some doorways for these people. It can be a huge challenge to come to a new country without the language and by starting these classes up we’re simply offering our help to these often very skilful people who could prove to be a huge asset to their communities if they learned even a basic level of English,” he added. Went the wrong way on Bridge Street A man who was observed driving the wrong way on a one-way street was banned for two years after pleading guilty to a drink driving charge at Dundalk District Court.
Colla McMahon of 55 St Macartans Villas, Carrickmacross, was seen driving erratically on the Castletown Road at 3.30am on July 9 last year. When he reached the junction with Bridge
St he took a right turn against the one-way system. He was arrested by Gardai and a blood sample showed he was over the limit for driving. The defence solicitor
stated that the 35-yearold Mr McMahon, who had a previous drink driving conviction, was at a function and regretfully drove after taking a few drinks. He was remorseful for his actions.
Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €350 fine for drink driving and a €100 fine in respect of careless driving. The disqualification was postponed to July 10.

Dundalk FC are pleased to confirm that a new pitch will be installed in time for the start of the 2017 SSE Airtricity League season. The club are working closely with the internationally renowned and award-winning pitch contractors Clive Richardson Ltd to install a new state of the art pitch manufactured by Italian company Limonta Sport. Work will commence early next week with the project due to be completed in time for the opening match of the season with Shamrock Rovers on February 24. The pitch to be installed is a Limonta Sport Max S P+ 60mm which has a unique
double-S shape filament which guarantees unparalleled quality in terms of long-term playability. A FIFA preferred producer of artificial turf since 2009, in 2014 the Football Association of Ireland welcomed Limonta Sport as its Official Artificial Turf Partner. As part of this agreement Limonta supplied the exceptional pitch installed at the FAI National Training Centre in Abbotstown. Dundalk FC enjoyed the use of this excellent surface while preparing for our European matches in 2016. The company in charge of installing the new surface at Oriel Park, Clive Richardson
Limited (CRL) specialise in Sportsground Construction and Civil Engineering Works, boasting over 40 years’ experience. CRL recently oversaw the installation of Crusaders’ synthetic surface, with work on Windsor Park, Croke Park and the RDS among their numerous projects. The club examined all options for the pitch at Oriel Park. It is the club’s preferred option to install a new natural turf pitch. However, having examined this option with stadium and pitch developers, we believe it is not the right time for the club to return to grass. The installation of the new pitch is the first part of a long-
term strategy to improve the facilities at Oriel Park for players, staff and both Dundalk and visiting supporters. The club are undertaking a major review into the longterm future of Oriel Park. Given that our that longstanding legal issues have only recently being resolved, this process is still in its early stages. As a result of this development, Dundalk FC will not be hosting any pre-season matches. The FAI will announce the President’s Cup arrangements in due course. We will, of course, keep supporters updated with the pitch and any other development news.

A woman who admitted having traces of heroin on tin foil when Gardai searched her house had the case against her adjourned to April 3 for a Probation Report. Kate honoured at athletics awards Louth athletes were celebrating at the Leinster Athletics awards on Saturday January 21, including Kate O’Connor of St Gerard’s AC, Dundalk, who was named Junior Athlete of the Year. She won an incredible six provincial titles at U17 level – in the 200m, Long Jump and Javelin outdoors and in the 800m, High Jump and Long Jump indoors. This talented multi-eventer, who finished seventh in the heptathlon in the European U18 Championships last July, also took silver in the Shot Putt outdoors. There were joint winners of the Juvenile Boys’ award as Gabriel Bell (St Peter’s AC, Dromiskin) and Jonathan Commins (Ardee & District AC) were both honoured. four silver medals – in the 100m Hurdles and Shot Putt outdoors and in the 60m Hurdles and Shot Putt indoors. Husband and wife John and Mary McGuone (Blackrock AC) received an Outstanding Service award in recognition of their sterling work as starters at so many competitions over the years.
Another recipient of an Outstanding Service award was Seán Callan (Clonliffe Harriers AC). Seán, a native of Ardee who has been living in Dublin for many years, is a well-known supporter of Irish athletics. There were also awards for Boyne AC’s Eimear Doyle and Amy McTeggart.

Driver lost control on corner A driver who took lost control when he took a corner too quickly and crashed into two cars was convicted of driving without reasonable care. Dundalk District Court heard that on April 4 last year Kenneth Omoh of 69 Woodville Manor, Tom Bellew Ave, Dundalk, lost control and hit a kerb. He col-
lided with two cars on the Avenue Rd that had stopped at traffic lights. Solicitor, Conor MacGuill stated that road conditions had caused his client’s vehicle to slip after he took the corner too fast. He added that the 30-yearold defendant is intermittently a student who also works and his
licence is important to him. He was fully insured on the day. The court heard that Mr Omoh had nine previous convictions including dangerous driving and no insurance. Judge Flann Brennan stated that this was quite a serious matter as he also imposed a €350 fine.

St Brigid’s Candlelight Procession The 41st Candlelight Procession from the summit of Faughart Hill will take place at 8pm on Wednesday February 1. Carlingford native Yvonne Keenan-Ross is delighted with her progress on Operation Transformation after reaching her weight loss target for a second successive week. In just two weeks Yvonne has shed 11lbs having embraced all challenges so far on the hit RTE television series. Yvonne, who runs the Liberty Café in Carlingford along with her husband Stephen says she is proud of herself and overwhelmed so far with the support she has received all over the country. “I feel great and I’m really proud of myself so far. It hasn’t been easy but I was delighted to meet my targets for the first two weeks and already I’ve lost almost a stone which is great. I have to say the whole experience so far has been amazing. It has been a bit tough to juggle all my work and family commitments around the operation transformation

filming requirements but I’m kind of in a nice routine now,” explained Yvonne. “It’s been very humbling to hear people saying that they are inspired by me. With regards to doing exercise I was probably the laziest person you could ever meet so if I can do it anybody can.” she added. The 48-year-old made the decision to do some-
thing about her weight when she caught a reflection of herself in a full-length mirror while on holiday last year. And when the chance to take part in Operation Transformation came up Yvonne knew this was the ideal time to do something about her weight. “There was a fulllength mirror beside my bed and I’d see myself every morning when I got up and it came as a bit of a shock to me. I was much bigger than I thought I was and it was a real wake up call for me. Taking part in Op-
eration Transformation has been a Godsend to me due to nature of the programme. The fact that you are being watched by so many people means you can’t take shortcuts and there’s a bit of extra pressure on you to meet your targets. It’s been a wonderful experience so far and I’m determined to keep on meeting my targets until I reach my ideal weight,” added Yvonne. Yvonne will be at the Bush track each Thursday for a walk and is encouraging anybody who would like to get fit to come out and join her.
A man who contested a drink driving charge was handed a two-year disqualification after he failed to have the case dismissed on a technicality. Declan McCabe of Marlbog Road, Dundalk, argued through barrister Martin Dully that the specific location of the checkpoint where he was stopped was not given in evidence and therefore it was not lawfully performed. However, Judge Flann Brennan stated he was satisfied that this evidence was provided. The court heard that on July 22 last year, Mr McCabe was stopped at a checkpoint at Knockbridge. He failed a roadside breath test and was taken to Dundalk Garda Station where a breath test showed he was over the limit. Mr Dully argued that the evidence should have been given that the checkpoint was conducted at Knockbridge - St Brides pitch junction, rather than just

He had been intending to get a taxi but a fight broke out and although he wasn’t involved, he had to leave in a hurry. He added that the 32-yearold defendant, who supports two children, has a business in Castleblayney and was dependent on his licence. Judge Brennan also imposed a €500 fine.

Found it difficult to cope with injury
A man who was finding it difficult to deal with being out of work after undergoing extensive surgery pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge at Dundalk District Court. Andrew Clarke of 19 Castle Heights, Castletown Road, Dundalk, was discovered by Gardai sitting in a stationary jeep near junction 16 on the M1 motorway on February 13 last year.
The engine was running and the lights were on. The driver was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and a urine sample showed he was over the limit. Solicitor, Paula Tiernan, stated that her client, who lives with his partner and two children, was a welder by trade but had suffered an accident at work and would be off work for some
time. He found it difficult to deal with this. The court heard that Mr Clarke had 26 previous convictions, three of which were for drink driving. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €300 fine and three-year disqualification in relation to the drink driving and a €50 fine for having no licence. Other charges were taken into consideration.

The cost of fuel has reached its highest level since late 2015 according to the latest AA Fuel Prices Index, as the average price of a litre of petrol rose by 4.9c and diesel by 5c within the last month. The AA’s analysis shows that the average price of a litre of petrol now sits at 136.3c per litre with a litre of diesel costing an average of 126.9c. The latest figures represent the latest in a series of fuel price increases for motorists, with the price of a litre of petrol now at its highest since September 2015. Meanwhile, the price of diesel has climbed to its highest level since August 2015, as prices of petrol and diesel rose for the fourth successive month. “While motorists were perhaps bracing themselves for an increase in fuel prices early in 2017 as the cost of a barrel of oil has steadily risen in recent months, the latest price rise represents the largest single month increase in prices since March 2015,” Conor Faughnan, Director of Consumer Affairs at AA Ireland highlighted. “While it’s impossible to know what the long-term future holds when it comes to fuel prices, currently all the factors which inform prices are trending into the wrong direction for motorists.” The latest escalation in fuel pric-
es further highlight the need for fuel taxes introduced in response to the economic recession to be reviewed by Government. “We have little no influence over the international events that affect fuel prices. But we do control Irish taxation and that is actually where the real damage is done. 63% of the price of petrol is tax, and 58% for diesel. That’s excessive. It has been excessive since the emergency budget of October 2008 and despite the end of the crisis period the taxes remain. As motorists contemplate empty wallets at the end of the month we should remember that it is the Irish government much more than global oil prices that sees us paying so much.” Faughnan added. “Throughout 2016 we saw an increase in traffic on Irish roads, which is normally a good indicator for an increase in the number of people working on a regular basis. Continuing to tax
what is a necessity for people trying to get to work, particularly for those in rural areas, at such high levels represents an anti-stimulus measure which disproportionately impacts those without viable alternative travel options.” Over 85c of the per litre petrol price is made up of taxes, with tax accounting for 73c of diesel pump prices. However, approximately 20c and 18c of the taxes on petrol and diesel respectively consists of five separate tax increases introduced between 2008 and 2012 as an emergency measure. Despite improvements in the Irish economy and the emergency era coming to an end, taxes which were once deemed a short-term measure have lived on. The AA warned that this in turn has a negative impact on people’s ability to take up employment, particularly in the case of those living in isolated areas.
