Ruth Copas became the Irish ladies National Tennis champion on New Year’s Eve when she defeated Karola Bejenaru (World No 811) from Romania in a gladiators contest taking the title 1-6, 7-5, 7-6. Copas, who is currently on a full-time scholarship at the university of New Mexico, is now going into her second semester of competition January to May 2017. En route to the final Copas went in as the Non2 seed for the event defeating Shauna O’Keefe in the first round 6-1 6-3. In the second round Copas defeated the Irish U-18 champion Shauna Heffernan 6-3 6-3 before dispatching Carragh Courtney 7-6, 6-1 in the semi-finals. In the final, Ruth certainly went in as the underdog with Bejenaru currently competing

The spirit of Fr Ted was alive and well on St Stephen’s Day on Blackrock beach as Conor Hughes and friends hosted their annual fundraiser for Crosscause. Conor’s charity Crosscause has been helping the people of Romania, Moldova and Ghana for over ten years and his St Stephen’s Day get together is the charity’s main fundraiser each year. Over the years Conor has dressed up as Charlie Chaplin, a bee, Thierry Henry’s hand as well as hosting his own version of The Gathering

Harry leaves The Marshes AS the dust settles on a busy festive period, the business community in Dundalk will reflect on the end of an era for the Marshes Shopping Centre after centre manager, Harry Traynor, left his position to take up a new job in the UK. As centre manager for the past 11 years, Harry has welcomed over 40 million shoppers to the area, managed the arrival of leading brands to the centre, and led a team of dedicated staff at Marshes. Launch of Mountain Goats Hillwalkers A new hillwalking group will be launched on Friday January 6 for those who wish to walk on weekdays as opposed to evenings or weekends. The Mountain Goats will meet every Friday at 11 am in the lower carpark, The Strandfield Centre, Ballymacscanlon,

Forced Garda to take evasive action

A 21-year-old driver claimed that he acted totally out of character when he forced a Garda to take evasive action when driving through a checkpoint before crashing into a ditch a short time later. Shane McCreesh of 43 Corliss Road, Crossmaglen, Co Armagh, who stated that he panicked when he saw Gardai, was banned from driving for two years when he pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge at Dundalk District Court. The court heard that on July 25 at 3am Gardai at the Long Walk saw the defendant approach a checkpoint at speed. He made no
effort to slow down and forced a Garda to jump out of the way. He failed to slow down as he drove in the direction of Church St and Gardai observed him at Dowdallshill where they were informed of a dangerous driving incident. He crashed into a ditch at Lower Faughart and left the car before being apprehended. He was taken to Dundalk Garda Station where a breath test showed he was over the limit. Solicitor, Ciaran Hughes, stated that his client, who had no previous convictions, had consumed two drinks on the night. He was due to fly back to Scotland, where he works, the
following morning but foolishly made the decision to drive as he couldn’t get a taxi. He panicked when he saw the checkpoint and continued to drive. Mr Hughes stated that his client came from an excellent family that was well-known in business circles. He was a hardworking man who was ashamed of his actions. He added that the incident had weighed heavily on him and that his mental health has deteriorated as a result, while pointing out that he has learned a harsh lesson. Judge Flann Brennan imposed a €300 fine along with the disqualification.

Shoe Box Appeal—The Students in ACS got involved in the “Fill a Tram Initiative”. This is an initiative organised by Luas and ‘Inner City Helping the Homeless’ project. In the school, Ms Joanne Finnegan and Ms Sarah Crilly (Amber Flag Committee) organised First Year and Transition Year students to donate shoeboxes filled with essential items. These will be given to homeless people in Dublin at Christmas. The Mannequin Challenge was used to record the hard work involved. The experience enabled the students to have fun and at the same time help others.

The fifth year students in A.C.S. took part in a sponsored walk in the Cooley Mountains in aid in aid of the Peter Mc Verry Trust, a society which helps combat homelessness. The students were inspired to do this after watching a documentary as part of their religious education programme. The hike raised €1,305. A cheque was presented by Paul Malone, 5th Year student.
Cleaner stole money from safe Fundraiser for Louth A part-time cleaner who stole almost €1,900 from her employer’s safe was told that if she paid the remaining compensation of €410, her case would be dealt with leniently. Jana Gaziova of 13 Williamsons Place, Dundalk, was given until April 12 to pay the money as her case was adjourned at Dundalk District Court. Evidence was given that on May 25, Gardai were called to
Riva Restaurant where they were informed by the owner that a staff member had stolen €1,860 from a safe and the offence was captured on CCTV. When Ms Gaziova was arrested she handed back €1,450, while Sgt Fintan McGroder stated that the theft required some planning. She had used her position as a cleaner to take keys and access the safe in an office. However, barrister, Irene

Irish legends Robbie Keane and Damien Duff took part in a friendly game against an Irish Amputee International Football team which included local man Garry Hoey. Damien Duff is an ambassador for amputee football and he brought along his good pal Robbie Keane to play in a friendly match at the FAI’s Abbotstown Training Centre before Christmas. The game was designed to raise awareness for amputee football and according to Garry the two Irish legends had very high praise for the amputee team having seen at first hand the skill involved in playing football whilst on crutches. “We had a very enjoyable game against a legends side which included Robbie and Damien and hopefully it succeeded in raising a bit of awareness for amputee football in Ire-

land. The two boys were very friendly and very approachable and in the end their team won 3-2. They actually played on crutches for the final ten minutes and they were telling us afterwards that they didn’t know how we were able to move so fast and easily while using them. “Damien has been a great ambassador for us and we were very grateful that he came down and supported us for
what was a very enjoyable afternoon,” stated Garry. Next on the agenda for Garry and his teammates will be getting ready for the Euro 2017 tournament in Turkey. Following a change of the rules the team must perform well in Turkey if they are to qualify for the World Cup in 2022. “We start training for the Euro’s on the 5th of January where we will attend a three-day train-
ing camp to get ready for Turkey. We’re under a bit of pressure to do well in that tournament as it is now part of the qualifying format for the World Cup in 2022. We have been getting better each year and we are determined to put in the hard work over the next few months to ensure we can do well in the Euro’s which in turn will guarantee us qualification for the World Cup,” explained Garry.

Having establishing the club in the Redeemer Family Resource Centre, Dundalk over 3 years ago, Sensei Marcus has brought the club from strength to strength. Sensei Marcus listed numerous achievements which included, competing in competitions at Local and National level, and not only would that be an achievement in itself, but they have competed at International Level within Ireland at the inaugural CIKA European Championships, but they have also competed at the very first CIKA England International Championships held in Liverpool.

Drug bust in Dundalk
Garda have seized cannabis herb and plants worth €210,000 from a house in Dundalk. While out on patrol on Operation Scale (Intelligence gathering and Burglary patrol) in the Dundalk area Gardaí from the Dundalk Detective Unit observed a car and individuals acting suspiciously at Castle Road, Dundalk they stopped
and searched the car and obtained a warrant to search a premises on Castle Road, Dundalk. During the course of the search of the premises and outbuildings Gardaí discovered a sophisticated cannabis cultivation “grow house” with approx. 200 plants in various stages of growth with an approximate
street value of €160,000 they also discovered cannabis herb with an approximate street value of €50,000. Two males, both 33 years old, were arrested and detained at Dundalk Garda station under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 as amended.

Cycling club end year on a high Cuchulainn Cycling Club hosted the annual New Year’s Eve Time Trial which attracted almost 50 riders to the new 12km course, which used the link road from Dorian’s Pub across to Ardee and back again. A relatively mild, though windy day, greeted the cyclists for the last day of 2016. Niell Delahaye of Team Asea Wheelworx was quickest on the day, in a time of 15:24. Niell was second last year so was delighted to have made the top
spot on the podium. Second place, exactly 20 seconds behind Delahaye, was Cucuhulainn’s Liam Dolan. Third place went to Martin Colgan of Armagh Down CC, in a time of 16:16. The women’s event was once again won in dominating fashion by Eve McCrystal, in a time of 16:23, leaving her only seven seconds off the men’s podium and good enough for fifth overall. Sheena Dullaghan was in second place, with Annette Dolan in third.

This year 890 euro was raised with over 100 people attended dressed up in Santa out fits, hats and even a sumo wrestler. Everyone walked, jogged and ran the one-mile loop of DKIT sports pitches.
