ADoor County vacation always starts by driving up Highway 42 or 57, winding along the waterfront villages that dot the route to Death’s Door. We cherish the beauty of historic clapboard houses against a sapphire blue seascape. Woven between the two highways is the beating heart of the county, the place where farming and tourism intersect and sustain each other. Join me on a journey into the space between, where we’ll visit places like Forestville, Clay Banks, Kolberg, Brussels, and roadside fruit stands, farms, and fields. Leaving the main road, where the centerline disappears, and surrounded by quilts of color, stands a bright red barn. Here you’ll find Cherryland Dairy Farm , founded in 1902 and home to Mike and Jamie Henschel, leading the 5th genera -

tion of farmers whose diligent care creates the cheese and ice cream that we love. Before the sunrise and once again before dinner, 50 Holstein cows are milked, along with raising chickens, ducks, goats, sows, honeybees, crops of corn, alfalfa, winter wheat, soybeans, and oats. Add to that maple syrup tapping, a sawmill, and a great love of farming.

Nearby is Schartner’s Farm Market , another multi-generation farm, where the season starts with maple tree tapping. Then it’s asparagus, strawberries, rhubarb,

sweet cherries, raspberries, tart cherries, sweet corn, pears, plums, apples, and pumpkins. The market sells an array of homemade jams, dressings, seasonal vegetables, pie fillings, and Karen’s famous homemade cherry pie. “The pie-making starts at 4:00 a.m., shifts into cherry and crop harvesting, then pick-your-own cherries, running the store, and getting the harvest to processing,” Jaden Schartner said. This continues until the last pumpkin is sold in October.

the county, the intersection between farming and tourism, and are what sustains much of the county’s economy. Sustainable broadly means “a holistic approach that considers ecological, social, and economic dimensions, recognizing that all must be considered together to find lasting prosperity” (Brundtland Commission).

One way it is shared is through Agri-tourism and the Montmorency red cherry. The start of fruit crops began with Joseph Zettle planting apple trees in the shallow soils. The UW Horticulture Depart-

ment tested fruits like apples, plums, and pears, but the tart cherry crop of 1896 was the ultimate success, as Door County eventually produced 10% of the U.S. crop. The cherry market has declined since its 1950s heyday, but cherry and other fruit orchards are still a big draw for visitors, from the burst of blossoms in May, to pick-your-own cherries in July, and the apple harvest in October.

Peach Barn Farmhouse & Brewery

Owner and visionary, Bobby Lautenbach, who passed away in 2021, added the winery, farm market, apple pick-your-owns, and orchard-view horse-drawn sleigh rides over the winter snow. “Fruit farming is so dependent on the weather and conditions,” Chris Lautenbach said. “We could lose an entire cherry crop with a poorly timed hailstorm. The winery created a dependable product line in addition to the fruit stand.”

Nine unique wineries comprise the Door County Wine Trail, supporting the industry through education, wine-tastings, special events, tours, and live music. Door Peninsula Winery , founded in 1974, has become the third-largest winery in Wisconsin, producing a wide array of popular fruit-based wines in its former Carlsville schoolhouse, along with its sister business

Door County Distillery , whose gin is rated the best in North America.

Distinct breweries

complement the county’s vibrant wine culture. Among them are Bridge Up Brewing Co. , Door County Brewing Co. , One Barrel Brewing Co. , Peach Barn Farmhouse and Brewery , Shipwrecked Brew Pub , and Starboard Brewing Co. Other unique local beverages like Island Orchard Cider , Tapuat Kombucha , and Hatch Distillery have also joined this market.

The cherry on top is cherry juice. With antioxidant properties and natural benefits in addition to a tantalizing taste, it can “assist with muscle pain and fatigue,” according to Mike Johnson, owner of Country Ovens/Cherry De-Lite . He and his wife Kathy started out packaging dried cherries for snacks and recipes. The by-product was cherry juice, (both pure and sweetened), now found in most bars and restaurants. The dried cherry is also an irresistible partner to chocolate. Packaged together, cherry-covered dried cherries

are in nearly every gas station, grocery store, and farm market—and at Country Ovens’ market on Forestville’s Main Street.

Just down the road from Country Ovens is Red Barn Corn Maze , making Agri-tourism fun with a maze that can be explored in September and October, by day and by haunted night. Hayrides take visitors to a pumpkin patch to choose a pumpkin. There are games to involve all ages, a scavenger hunt, farm animals, obstacle course, gift shop, and concessions.

Farming and community are closely intertwined, and you get a taste of that at a soup festival event called Booyah & Bread . What’s Booyah?

In a little-known Belgian settlement, the community of Namur in Brussels, (on the National Register of Historic Places), farmers traditionally brought their harvests to a community cook-out where enormous pots of soup were carefully prepared over a

wood fire and served to the community.

My daughter and I tried it and were astounded by the succulent nourishment, borne by pride of the chefs. This delicious one-pot harvest soup, served with home-baked bread, and desserts, served at the former St. Mary of the Snows church, was a fascinating educational journey. You can also find booyah at the annual Belgian Days festival (July 7-10, 2023).

While visiting Southern Door, a must-stop is award-winning Renard’s Cheese , established in 1961, and run by the next generation, Chris and Ann Renard. They tout the rich soil nutrients that create lush grazing for local dairy cows as the reason for the high-quality milk used in their cheeses. Their commitment to sustainability includes milk from a 30-mile range, cream transported to a local dairy for butter, whey sent to a processing plant to create protein snacks, drinks, and animal

feed, and cheesemaking water delivered back to the environment to enrich the soil. Visiting the Renard’s store on Hwy 57, you can try a selection of Cheddars, Colby, Farmers, Muenster, Brick, Marble, Monterey Jack, Mozzarella String, Smoked String and over 50 flavor-infused specialty cheeses. Enjoy other local homemade products, wine, soaps, crackers, dips, sausage, bakery items, take and bake pizza, and ice cream. Grab a bag of delicious cheese

curds, which we grew up calling “squeaky cheese.” Chris said most Door County restaurants offer Renard’s breaded cheese curds on the menu and shouldn’t be missed.

Southern Door also offers many pick-your-own cherry locations, including Kielar Akers Orchard , Cherry Lane Orchards , and Meleddy Cherry Orchard near Forestville, and Sir Reginald’s Sweet Cherry Orchard and Paradise Farm Cherry Orchard near Gardner.

Red Barn Corn Maze

Just northeast of Gardner is Sully’s Produce . Sully’s has 40 acres of hand-picked produce, bakery, homemade jams and jellies, flower arrangements, and our family’s favorite, lemon poppyseed cake. Sully’s provides gardeners with a head start on plantings, including often-difficult broccoli, in its May plant sales, and helps stock the county with fresh produce at weekly farmers markets.

Another type of farm to visit in Southern Door, when

all the vegetables and fruits have been put to bed, is tree farms. Between Brussels and Forestville is a tiny community called Kolberg... don’t blink because you might miss it. A little gem on Kolberg Road is Door County Trees , a robust Christmas tree farm giving guests the traditional adventure of searching, picking, cutting, and hauling the tree of your holiday dreams. They offer balsam, Frazier, and Canaan firs. If you don’t bring your own saw, they’ll have one

Farmers Markets

Taking a drive on the back roads of “the space between” are dozens of roadside markets, from Sorens Valhalla Orchard and Malvitz Bay Farms south of Sturgeon Bay to Seaquist Orchards north of Sister Bay, which offer local produce, homemade cherry pie, maple syrup, honey, pumpkins, and sweet corn.

Last summer we visited Door County Fruit Connection , on the main intersection in Carlsville. They use Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) approved methods and advanced integrated pest management practices to keep the bees (and people) alive and well. Instead of herbicides for weed control they mulch, mow, hoe, and ground cloth their trees.

For some rural “action” in the space between 42 and 57, don’t miss the Valmy

Thresheree (August 18-20, 2023). Home of the Northeastern Wisconsin Antique Power Association, it offers a unique

opportunity to see antique farm machinery and observe a community in action. Watch locals compete in events like the antique tractor pull, chainsaw competition, kids pedal tractor pull, and cavalcade of power. The biggest draw, one where the women dominate, is the mud pig wrestling. Hard to watch but hard to look away, know that the pigs are properly treated. In addition, there are demonstrations, tractor rides, food and refreshments, a craft and vendor show, blacksmith shop, Amish bakery, music and dance party, and Polka Mass.

In Northern Door, experience the Liberty Grove Antique Tractors & Arts Festival (July 22-23, 2023) on the Liberty Grove Historical Society property at the top of Ellison Bay hill. Festivalgoers enjoy pony and hayrides, artisan exhibits and demonstrations, food, beverages, ice cream, live music, and a display of antique tractors and machinery like the old-time cherry shaker. Tractors & Arts Festival

donated historical items present the life of early European settlers.

A favorite for both visitors and locals is the Door County Fair , (August 9-13, 2023), established in 1871, with grandstand attractions, carnival rides, a race track, and games. Aside from the entertainment and midway rides, “Fairs are vital in bringing agriculture to the forefront in communities,” said Shari Black, CEO of Wisconsin State Fair Park. The fair gives the young farmer a chance to showcase their well-bred animal of choice, like cows, fowl, pigs, and rabbits, and compete in equestrian events. It’s amazing to watch kids maneuver and adjust cows bigger than they are!

To be immersed in farm life, visit The Farm , just north of Sturgeon Bay on Hwy 57. This was a favorite weekly spot when my kids were little, and they still enjoy it as adults. Started in 1966, The Farm is a living museum of rural America, with farm animals

in their natural surroundings, historical exhibits, milking demonstrations, and nature trails. Visitors can bottle feed goat kids, lambs and piglets, and feed corn to the older goats and sheep. Pull little ones in wagons as they cuddle a kitten for the journey. Discover the difference between wheat, oats, rye, soybean, and corn. Bring a lunch to picnic on the grounds and make a day of it.

Perhaps the most picturesque farm to immerse yourself in is Horseshoe Bay Farms on Cty. G just south of Egg Harbor. Horseshoe Bay Farms was one of the largest and most distinctive farms developed in the early 1900’s, operating both above the bluff (cultivating cherry, apple, and plum orchards) and below the bluff on the shores of Green Bay (focused on cattle breeding, hogs, chickens, dairy, and grain). Back in the day the local newspapers wrote constantly about the farm, from German POWs helping with the cherry harvest to Green Bay Packers

as camp counselors. The Farms were the pride of Door County and positioned the Peninsula in the front ranks of the agriculture community.

Today, Horseshoe Bay Farms is no longer an operating farm after much of it was developed in the 1990s with homes, condos, and a membership golf club. A group of neighbors purchased the remaining farm below the bluff as a non-profit organization, to preserve the iconic landmark as a center for sustainable stewardship. The buildings are being refurbished and a community center of learning

and programming is underway. Explore the rich history during farm tours and wander the dahlia flower farm. It’s also the site of the art installation Stickwork by Patrick Dougherty and son Sam.

Horticulture is a big contributor to Door County business, adding over $3 million to the industry with flowers, trees, Christmas trees, fruit, and landscaping plants, nurseries, and greenhouses. One of the most spectacular horticulture farms that must be inhaled to be believed is

Hidden Acres and Beach Road Community Garden

The farm is home to 30,000 lavender plants in 14 varieties, a demonstration garden, essential oil production, a gazebo, shop, and outdoor seating for the café and beverage bar. The owners cultivate an all-natural environment, provide education about lavender’s uses and benefits, and invite guests to wander and sit among astoundingly beautiful vistas. There are smaller vegetable farms dotted across the county, supplying restaurants and locals in the farm-to-table industry. At its heart, farmto-table means that the food on the table came directly

from a specific farm , without going through a store, market, or distributor along the way. It can also be a place where chefs prepare and serve the food at the farm. Hidden away on Beach Road in Sister Bay is Hidden Acres and Beach Road Community Garden , the family project of Tom and Carolyn Rehberger, who created a community garden around their passion for gardening, cooking, and healthy foods. They supply produce to a dozen local restaurants and collaborate with Door County Underground owners Matt Chambas and Jamie Mead, to create a

farm-to-table signature dining experience on the farm.

Some of the smaller farms sell at the six local farmers markets: Ephraim (Water St. on Mondays), Jacksonport (Lakeside Park on Tuesdays), Fish Creek (Settlement Shops on Wednesdays), Sister Bay (Sister Bay Historical Society’s Corner of the Past Museum on Saturdays), Sturgeon Bay (downtown), and Washington Island (Gathering Ground). A new farmers market, Bondemarked, will be open this season on Monday evenings from 4-7pm next door to The Red Putter mini golf course property at the north end of Ephraim. All feature access to excellent producers and entrepreneurs of natural products, food, fish, flowers, and arts and crafts. One such entrepreneur is Mattea Fischer, who we call “The Bread Lady,” because she is known all over the county for the best sourdough bread, bagels, focaccia rounds, and rolls. She has created Cultured , a micro sourdough

bakery and fermenter located on the corner of Cty. Q and Hwy 57. The menu varies weekly, with dynamic parings like brie cranberry, parmesan olive and tomato garlic, and all the breads are naturally leavened using 100% organic flour, while the fermented vegetables use organic or local and pesticide/herbicide-free products. Her bread also appears at Waseda Farm Market , Healthy Way Market , and Madison Avenue Market , and you can order online for arranged pick-up.

When we talk organic, what exactly does that mean? Originally, the Potawatomi Indians, an indigenous Door County tribe, sustainably cultivated corn, beans, and squash, known as the “Three Sisters.” Later, small family farms practiced organic agriculture because it was the only way, until scientific advances introduced chemicals like DDT in 1939, to control pests. Today, new advances are leading farming back—or forward—to

organic farming. The organic farm doesn’t use herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, or chemical fertilizers, and the animals are humanely treated without hormones or antibiotics. Grazing herds eat grasses, legumes, brassicas, and small grains, and are moved between paddocks to recycle nutrients through their manure. Organic farming has gained popularity in Door County through farms like Door Karma Farms , Waseda Farms , Wilke R Organic Farm , and Door County Garlic . Local organ -

Door County’s largest and most-established organic farm, Waseda Farms, has hosted humanely raised animals on over 1,500 acres of certified organic pasture since 2008. You can visit the farm on Logerquist Road, and enjoy the hiking trails and farm market, selling meat products, cheese and dairy, produce, local beer, and organic wines. borhood grocery stores and served in local restaurants who proudly display the Waseda name on the menu.

Although being “Certified Organic” requires an intense, lengthy process, local farms such as Country View Farms LLC , Brey Family Beef , Narrow Gate Farm , and Sunset Farm use responsible and humane practices and sell to farmers markets, restaurants, and to the Wisconsin restaurant chain, Culver’s . Culver’s supports family farms and donates to Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapters.

Door County’s local FFA chapter puts on an annual farm-fresh all-you-can-eat dairy breakfast (July 2, 2023) using all local products to entice travelers and locals to visit the sponsoring farm and get a taste of farm life. The event started 42 years ago as a fundraiser for students to attend FFA’s agricultural education programs.

that encourages retention of farmland. This plan is in full effect in the town of Clay Banks, home to 273 acres of qualifying zoned farmland and 91 acres of the Land Trust Legacy Nature Preserve, including nearly 3,000 feet of undeveloped shoreline. Just south of that is La Salle County Park which includes another 23 acres with 440 feet of shoreline. The area is ripe with fruit stands and pick-your-owns.

Our local waterways and farms are closely connected. Rep. Joel Kitchens and Sen. Robert Cowles created legislation to connect farmers with conservation, investing in safe ground water and the waters that surround this peninsula. “Nitrate is one of the most common contaminants in drinking water. It gets into water from fertilizer runoff, manure from animal feeding operations and wastewater treatment plant discharge,” according to Environmental Working Group. This legislation invests in helping commer-

cial farms safely mitigate the discharge of nitrates.

It is a concern for beach bathers when levels of E.coli. force beaches to close, and commercial fishermen who supply salmon, perch, walleye, and whitefish to restaurants. It’s a delicate balance that requires constant research into sustainability.

One example is Hickey Brothers Fish Market and Hickey Bros Fisheries , a fourth-generation fish retailer and commercial fishing operation, respectively, in Baileys Harbor. They’ve worked with the DNR, Sea Grant, Fisheries Co-op at UW-Stevens Point, and U.S. Fish & Wildlife to “complete numerous assessments, tagging, and research projects” aimed at fishery management, operational expertise, and data collection.

The WI DNR also plays a vital role in maintaining the Great Lakes sport fishery for coho and chinook salmon, steelhead, and brown trout by spawning eggs at the Straw-

berry Creek spawning facility in Sturgeon Bay. The industry helps support sport fishing and brings many people to the area for bass, salmon, steelhead, brown trout, and ice fishing tournaments. There are two dozen fish charters available from Brussels to Washington Island for a day of fishing.

Prefer someone else to do the work? Henricksen’s Fisheries , established in 1987, is a wholesale supplier to more than 30 local restaurants. They provide fresh, local, sustainable whitefish year-round and are at local farmers markets and Henriksen’s Fish House in Elli -

son Bay, which offers boneless fillets, whitefish spread with both cream and goat cheese, and whitefish cakes.

Henricksen Fisheries is one of the suppliers to Charlie’s Smokehouse, a Gills Rock icon started in 1932. Open yearround, the Voight family has perfected the craft of smoking fish and offers a selection of locally caught whitefish, trout, and salmon, among other fish varieties and products.

consin system use science and education to promote regenerative agriculture and healthy food practices. According to the UW-Extension, agriculture accounts for $243 million in economic activity in Door County and contributes $90 million to the county’s total income, paying $4.7 million in taxes. Agricultural processing is a key local industry as well, processing milk into dairy products, with meats, fish, and cherries as the other main products.

On this journey into the heart of Door County, I’ve barely scratched the surface

of the contribution and gift of those who till the land, grow the crops, and raise the animals from gestation to table. Our farmers and fishermen monitor, understand, and predict the courses of our health and livelihoods.

This classic DC village sits on the bay. Legend says its unusual name may be from a friendly egg battle between early fur traders as they raced to shore — or from a nest of duck eggs found by the county’s first settler. Go swimming!

Historic buildings, such as the old town hall, drug store, and feed mill are now home to great shops — home decor, clothing and jewelry boutiques, souvenirs, confectioneries, olive oils, galleries and books. There’s also a health food store and gourmet grocery store.

Supper clubs, pubs, and restaurants serve homemade barbecue, steak and seafood, Italian, French, Spanish tapas and more. There’s an artisan cheese shop and microbrewery.

This authentic fishing village lies at the northernmost tip of the peninsula — known as the ‘top of the thumb.’ Island ferries, weathered fishing sheds, and an old fishing boat that sits on dry land reflect its historic maritime heritage. Go fishing!

A fine restaurant with panoramic views, a few souvenir shops, and cottages occupy old buildings along the village’s only street and waterfront. Scandinavian imports, nautical items, jewelry, locally made jams, jellies, and pies can be found here.

Watch the incredible sunsets over Porte des Mortes (Death’s Door), go fishing, take a scenic boat ride, or take a drive on the county’s famous ‘winding’ road.

Wisconsin’s only formally designated wilderness park — 2,373 acres of forests, wetlands, and meadows. Fern Trail has interpretative panels to guide visitors through the forest. There are miles of hiking and offroad biking trails, cross-country skiing paths, beaches, and campgrounds.

The last few miles of highway 42 curves and zig zags through fields and forest and ends at Northport Pier. It is one of the county’s most beautiful and photographed sites — especially in autumn when maple trees are in full color. A must see.

The business center for the Southern Door area of the Door Peninsula is rich with a life that most visitors never experience. Agriculturally driven, but just as naturally beautiful as the county’s northern region, it offers a quiet peace, and access to outdoor adventure, while also providing a gateway to a unique, surprisingly unchanged Belgian heritage.

What looks like a simple country crossroads is actually also the home to a renowned potter, the Write On, Door County arts organization (mission: everyone has a story to tell!), a chiropractor, a Lutheran church, and, as of this writing, an Italian restaurant. Initial appearances can be deceiving in Door County, so go ahead, slow down and explore…

Featuring easy land and water access to Mink River Basin, a watershed and flowage with excellent fishing, and a respectedyet-hidden lodging facility/ restaurant/bakery/fish boil site called (what else?) Rowleys Bay Resort, it’s hard to exaggerate the beauty of the view that spills out from the resort shoreline towards the Basin and out to greater Lake Michigan.

This little fishing village sits on the Green Bay shoreline in Southern Door. Increase Claflin, the county’s first settler, built a log cabin here in 1835. Today it is known for walleye, bass, and perch fishing. Its annual festival, ‘Little Sturgeon Days’ has live music, a horseshoe tournament and parade. Go fishing! Located in the town of Gardner.

This surprising little place, tucked away in the heart of the county, is surrounded by farmland. There’s a winery that offers tastings and a shop with its own products, a restaurant with a model train that entertains kids and adults alike, a friendly pub, and a pizza place with outdoor dining. Go have fun! Crossroads of Hwy E and Hwy A.

This entire island is a rustic state park and popular camping and kayaking destination. One of the island’s most unique features is a summer estate built by Icelandic inventor Chester Thordarson in 1920. Among the buildings is a limestone boathouse decorated with characters from the Norse Runic alphabet and original hand-carved Scandinavian furniture. Go visit the estate! The attractive couple spent AJ’s birthday at Sturgeon Bay’s Drömhus restaurant and event space this past March, greeting representatives of the dozen restaurants they had chosen for a cover photo shoot for the Go! Guide’s sister publication, the Door County Dining Guide . Their impromptu Door County Instagram promotion, “Dining with the Dillons,” features the local restaurants they love. “We are absolute foodies,” Gabrielle said. “We love trying new food, scouting out the best spots for different cuisines, and we have experience food tasting all over the world.”

DC is their main focus, as Gabrielle spent her youth visiting and working here. “When I met AJ in 2020, during a time when outdoor activities had quite an appeal, I decided to show him beautiful Door County,” she said. “Needless to say, ever since we’ve traveled to the county, enjoying everything it has to offer.”

The couple visited local restaurants, shook hands with bar owners and took photos with fans, posting their experiences on Instagram. “It’s to share with the community our love of food and promote the special Ma-Pa places we enjoy,” AJ said.

He has spent so much time on the Peninsula it’s became a media sensation. In fact, he playfully touted in interviews that he hoped to be presented with a key to the county, a wish granted in 2021 by Destination Door County CEO Julie Gilbert.

Fish boils are Door County’s only indigenous dish, brought to the Peninsula by Scandinavian immigrants.

Our Masterboiler slices fresh fish into chunks, then boils it with baby red potatoes and sweet onions.

Thriving with Sourdough

“The Bread Lady”

As the Door County food scene continues to diversify and specialize with the creation of new sustainable food items, Cultured in Sister Bay (the corner of Cty. Q and Hwy 57) has appeared as a special gem. The creation of local entrepreneur Mattea Fischer, the business is a micro sourdough bakery and fermenter that offers deliciously authentic sourdough and other baked goods.

Mattea notes that many people have no idea that sourdough is not a flavor but a process and is also the oldest way to make bread. “Most sourdough you might find in the grocery store has additives to create a sour flavor and is also leavened with yeast, whereas real sourdough is leavened with a starter, which is only fermented flour and water,” she said. “Real sourdough should have only three ingredients—flour, water, and salt.”

I did a taste test comparing Mattea’s bread to sourdough from the store, and I can attest that her bread had a deeper flavor, a less compressed texture, beautiful color, and no additives. “I’m constantly learning and having to adjust the process, based on temperature and different flours, but it’s a delight watching flour, water, and salt transform into a crusty loaf of bread,” Mattea said. Her breads also use 100% organic flour, and the fermented vegetables are either organic or locally grown and pesticide- and herbicide-free.

The Cultured menu varies as the season changes and could include breads such as country white, cranberry walnut, cinnamon raisin, rustic rye, olive rosemary, Parmesan and roasted garlic, jalapeño cheddar, elote, and cheddar chive. There are also assorted focaccia breads with toppings like brie cranberry, parmesan olive, and tomato garlic. She also makes bagels, bialys, cookies, sticky buns, rolls and fermentations of different varieties of kimchi and sauerkraut.

Most of us think of sauerkraut as German, though it was developed in China, Mattea informed me. “Fermentation is the

oldest known way of preserving food, which is why sauerkraut and kimchi (which is Korean) came into existence,” she said. “Sauerkraut is crunchy and tangy, much the same as its shelf-stable counterparts, which are preserved with vinegar.”

Mattea doesn’t use vinegar; hers are traditionally fermented with cabbage and salt. “I love fermentation because the magic is in the bacteria, which exists naturally in the air and on vegetable matter — sourdough bakers and fermenters simply give them a place to thrive.”

An exciting addition to Cultured is the storefront on County Q, open for walk-in service Thursday through Sunday, offering bagel sandwiches and drip coffee along with baked goods and her famous sourdough. More items will be available as the season’s vegetables grow. “I always knew I wanted to be self-employed, and Door County happened to be where I discovered this passion of fermenting. I’m lucky to be surrounded by so much talent in other small business owners and an amazing community of people who support each other,” Mattea said.

She found her way to Door County with a friend from Green Bay who worked here for years and suggested she give it go. “My first job was working as the gardener at Wickman House,” she said. Before that she spent time travelling to farms that needed extra hands through Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF). “I made my way to Milwaukee to intern at Growing Power (an urban farm there) and worked at Twin Elm Gardens north of Green Bay before migrating to Door County.”

Tractor Love

The love starts early. When growing up on a farm, the tractor is like another family member, with designated brands in specific colors. The orange Allis Chalmers, the red Farmall, gray Ford, sand and red Case, and green John Deere. “Tractors were as common as automobiles!” Suzi Hass, photographer and hay farmer, said about her first tractor experience on a dairy farm. The brand is personal to the upbringing. For me, I loved our Ford because it was smaller and looked steady, modest, and loyal. The first time I got my tractor driving instruction, having graduated from the riding lawnmower, I was 10. I still remember it to this day. My Pop explained the shift, throttle, clutch and brake. I was in a state of heady frenzy for it was my chance to prove myself a valuable member of the orcharding crew. Everything started out okay, but as I did circles in the yard, with Pop shouting directions at me, I couldn’t remember how to stop the thing! Needless to say, he rescued me… after I ran over his toes.

Suzi Hass reminded me how Door County is the “land of the Escarpment, where springtime is the annual stone harvest.”

“When you live on a farm, if you can keep the tractor in a straight line while other workers put stones on a flatbed trailer behind, you’re hired!” Suzi recalled. “Someone older would jump on and turn at the end of the field! I did my own turning when my legs got long enough to reach the clutch pedal.”

Having youth help on the farm has been important since agriculture began, though the laws have changed with education and the age limits allowing youth to drive machinery. Those who are licensed can celebrate “drive your tractor to school day” at some of our local schools, sponsored by the FFA.

Farmers feel so strongly about their vehicle and craft that they will compete, show off, and parade for events in Door County like the tractor pull at the Thresheree, Ellison Bay Antique Tractor Show, Door County Fair, and many parades. Seeing a dozen shiny green and yellow John Deere tractors of all eras proudly lined up for show is a treat for the eye. So much love and attention go into the meticulous restoration of an antique tractor.

and restoring John Deere tractors, and even started farming just so he could use all six of them. When he passed away, the previous owner of the tractors, Peter Nehlsen from Washington Island, bought most of them back. I still have the ‘A’ model and another Deere my brother purchased from Jack Hagen, an Islander, which sits in my yard as art sculpture.

Julian Hagen, Jack’s son, musician, and Islander, carries on the love of tractors with his song Tractor Seat Woman, about a farming man who feels the loneliness of farm life and dreams up the kind of woman that would satisfy his soul. It includes her fitting onto his tractor seat! “My father was an “Allis” man,” Suzi said. “We had Allis-Chalmers tractors at the farm where I was born but I married an “orchard guy” and I clearly remember when we had a few good cherry crop years and bought 2 new Ford tractors. The orchard has long been sold but the two tractors I own now came from that life. I have a 4600 Ford Diesel that we used to haul bins of cherries and apples. My other tractor is a much older 8N Ford that had nets for the cherry shaker mounted on it.”

Allis on the Freddy Kodanko ride. The ride started 20 years ago to celebrate the life of Freddy K, and anyone else you bring in your heart, on a tractor ride around the county. Freddie K was known as the Door County Polka King, a dancer, potato farmer, and character. As the story goes, he lost his driver’s license and took to the tractor for transportation, which was somewhat legal back then. I remember seeing Freddy all over the county, sharing polka music from his record player while driving the tractor, always bringing spirit and joy wherever the music reached. Tourists may have recognized him in the parades running down the Highways, dressed in a blue cape and crown.

“The tractor ride is always a great time, with familiar faces and memories made,” Suzi recalls. “Don’t forget your sunscreen and remember to hydrate! Without fail, someone’s tractor has problems, and the knowledgeable ones gather and figure it out.”

What I love is taking my tractor out to mow the trails — no one can reach me, I can’t hear or feel my phone, I’m with my loyal pal and follow her little grey nose down the paths, bending over to avoid the trees whipping at my face, stopping to rescue a stalk of asparagus in the pathway, observing the deer lift their heads and then go back to eating, alarming the two resident sand hill cranes who sound their displeasure, outrun the mosquitos, look up into the clear blue sky and feel like everything is in order. — Marise Redmann

Zabler Jewelers: 51 Years

How many art and design careers were ultimately launched by the famed Peninsula School of Art, you may wonder? One such artist is Russ Zabler, who was taking PenArt photography classes back in the late 1960s and went on to take his rst Metal Arts class in 1972. e year 2023 marks Russ’s 51st year creating unique jewelry designs.

“Jewelry had lit a re in me,” Russ said recently. First, he worked at a trade shop doing jewelry repair and custom work on Jeweler’s Row in downtown Chicago at 5 N. Wabash. He subsequently took over the business and ran it for seven and a half years, all while pursuing his own work in summer art shows. In 1983, Russ bought his current Ephraim shop and remade it into Zabler Design Jewelers. A year later, he also acquired his store in the Chicago area, in Clarendon Hills, Illinois.

As always, the two stores o er countless alternatives for engagement rings, from antique diamond rings to peach-pink sapphire to morganite and rose gold combinations. Russ simply has an original and inventive way to inspire clients with a curated selection.

Today, Russ Zabler’s motivation remains the same as when he started out in the business. “Honestly, I just love the connections I get to make with individuals, and being able to work with beautifully colored gems and rare objects.”

Where To Start Reading About Door County

Writer, poet and teacher, Norbert Blei learned his craft in Chicago, but produced his best writing about the people and beauty of Door County, his home for 40 years. Famously, he wrote almost every day in a converted chicken coop near Europe Lake. Among his many books, Door Way is still a must read and is available at Al Johnson’s Butik in Sister Bay. After Blei died in 2013, the Coop was moved to Write On, Door County, the well-known nonprofit in Juddville.

I rarely visit any place in the world without reading about it first. Once there, I prowl local bookstores and question knowledgeable owners for those books I need to tell me more about the place. The histories, maps, biographies, essays, stories, local poets, even local cook books. I want to see beyond the façade of restaurants, shops, galleries, local entertainment tabloids, and advertising, and purchase books to read while I’m there and then carry them home with me, adding to my own library for future enjoyment and reference. There’s nothing like revisiting a warm summer place

on a cold winter night in the pages of a good local book that brings the people, places, history, and culture alive in your hands.

Door County has a wealth of fine books that capture the past and ‘presence’ of this place. Where to begin? I would suggest H. R. Holand’s Old Peninsula Days, a must for your personal library of Door County books. Originally published in l925, and followed by many subsequent editions, Holand captures the lure, lore, and history of the county’s people and places, references earlier historians from Indian times, even French explorers, and gives the reader a solid sense of our pioneering times. He delves into all of the villages and towns from their very beginnings, including Rock Island, Washington Island, Ephraim, Fish Creek, Egg Harbor...not to mention stories of settlers toiling in the woods and on the waters. According to noted Door County bibliophile, part-time Sister Bay resident, and Egg Harbor book dealer Charles F. Calkins, “Old Peninsula Days is a quick but interesting read about Door County because it is an anecdotal history. The relatively short

vignettes do not constitute “hard history” that really details important aspects of the county’s evolution. Holand’s preceding (1917) two-volume History of Door County is the more characteristic “standard” county history of its period.

“I once heard someone say that Holand included “the leftovers” from his 1917 history in Old Peninsula Days, published eight years later in 1925. That is not true, however, as Holand included many of the same topics in both histories,” Calkins said.

In Chapter II of Holand’s Old Peninsula Days, he details the presence of the Native American culture on the peninsula through the words of 17th Century French historian La Potherie, who beautifully captures life among the Indians upon the Door landscape:

“The country is a beautiful one, and they have fertile fields planted with Indian corn. Game is abundant at all seasons, and in winter they hunt bears and beavers. They hunt deer at all times, and they even catch wild fowl in nets. In autumn there is a prodigious abundance of ducks, both black and white, of excellent flavor, and the savages stretch nets in certain places where these fowl alight to feed upon the wild rice. Then advancing silently in their canoes, they draw them up alongside of the nets in which the birds have been caught. They also capture pigeons in their nets in the summer. They make in the woods wide paths in which they spread large nets in the shape of

a bag and attached at each side they make a little hut of branches in which they hide. When the pigeons in their flight get within this open space, the savages pull a small cord which is drawn through the edge of the nets and thus capture sometimes five or six hundred birds in one morning, especially in windy weather. All the year round they fish for sturgeon, and for herring in the autumn; and in winter they have fruits. This fishery suffices to maintain large villages. They also gather wild rice and acorns. Accordingly, the peoples of the bay can live in utmost comfort.”

Charlie Calkins concludes, “In my view, you have to give credit where credit is due. Holand was one of the first to take the history of Door County seriously and set about to do something about it, record it in written form for posterity. Holand was educated and had a facility with the written word. At times, I believe, he played “fast and easy” with the facts, and in these instances he did not let the facts get in the way of what he thought was a good story. Much of what we know to be the true history of Door County, nevertheless, has come from Holand’s pen.” —

With emphasis on 1870-1940, our collection of farm buildings and old-time farm implements is impressive. 19th century craft demonstrations and kids’ activities on summer Wednesdays. The Veblen Study Cabin is an especially unique piece of Island history. From 1896 to 1926, world-famous economist Thorstein Veblen spent summers here, and in 1916 he built a study cabin and home. The Washington Island Heritage Conservancy moved the cabin and it is being restored on the shore of Little Lake, next to Jacobsen Museum.

Exploring Heritage Village at Big Creek

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in Door County

“We’re always searching for ways to better meet the needs of today’s traveler and resident,” says Morgan Rusnak, Destination Door County’s community engagement manager, who is facilitating a program to help businesses add 8 more charging stations this year.

Door County is helping the initiative for clean transportation by offering 15 public places to charge electric vehicles and 20 lodging facilities and campgrounds with plug-ins for their guests. Trips to Door County that fall within 200 miles are now accessible because of convenient hook-ups throughout the county.

How can driving electric make a difference? Did you know, the largest source of climate pollution in the U.S. is not manufacturing, but transportation — according to Earthjustice, a nonprofit environmental law organization.

Emissions are poor for the planet but also for our health, causing asthma, bronchitis, cancer, and premature death.

Birch Creek’s 48th Season

From mid-June to mid-August each summer, Birch Creek Music Performance Center students and faculty are in residence for four, two-week Academy Sessions in Percussion, Steel Pan & World Music; Symphony and Big Band Jazz. The campus is set in a beautiful rural landscape three miles east of Egg Harbor and welcomes advanced music students and faculty performing artists who study and teach by day and present 30 concerts at night in the historic Dutton Concert Barn. Fishstock Concert Series’s 2023 season begins with a July 2nd performance by singer/songwriter Will Kruger and continues through nine additional concerts to Eric Lewis & Friends on Sept. 3rd.

The 10-concert Fishstock Concert Series includes a wide range of well-known musicians in the genres of folk, Americans, and alternative music, said concert promoter Steve Ellmann. “This is a group of touring musicians that represents many of the best musicians on the current music scene, with the heavy emphasis on folk that our patrons have always enjoyed. Why We Got Married in Door County

THE BRIDE’S PERSPECTIVE:

Grandma June’s summer kitchen in Ellison Bay is my strongest childhood memory. She grew strawberries and raspberries, crafted them into delicious pies, and stored that baker’s bliss in the cool oasis next to the farmhouse. Once a week, my grandpa John carved wooden ducks and loons with his “carver friends” in the huge driveway. My sister and cousins and I spent our long days climbing trees and playing kick the can.

So...Door Country was always the place where I wanted to get married. For years, I dreamt of introducing my imagined mate to the county roads, the hidden beaches, the local watering holes, and it would become OUR place to play. After moving away from Door County for almost 20 years, that’s exactly what happened.
