MATTERS OF THE HEART Or is it better to say ‘the heart of the matter’? Well, both the terms are meaningful and important. The first phrase ‘matters of the heart’ means things concerning the heart. The second, ‘heart of the matter’ indicates the importance and centrality of a point in a discourse. In fact, the heart is considered to occupy a central position in a person’s life and activities. But why is love linked to the heart? The human heart, symbolically and as an organ has been linked to our emotions, the mind, the soul, and our existence since antiquity in the west. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks considered the heart, not the brain, to be the source of our thoughts, feelings, and will. Several factors have led to the belief that the heart is the primary organ in humans, the major ones being its anatomical position at the center of the body and its necessity in strengthening our life. Somehow, it seems intuitive that the core which enables us to live might be what also allows us to experience life. At the very least, the intimate linkage between heart and life is evident. The idea of heart as seat of emotion sprung from qualitative observations that changes in emotion seem to have a direct relationship to physical changes in the body, perhaps none so obvious than the rhythm of the heart. When a powerful emotion such as fear or anger grips us, the changes in blood pressure and heart beat are the most apparent. All of us can attest that love can produce some of the most violent of these changes. We can literally feel it in our chest. So love’s association with the heart seems to stem from the unmistakable physical feeling that emanates from it when we experience love coupled with this psychological notion of the heart as symbol for life and emotion that pervades our collective consciousness. We celebrated the solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus (3rd June) and the feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (4th June). These two hearts are inextricably linked to the persons they represent and their immeasurable love for God and humanity. While highlighting the two greatest commandments Jesus clearly links love to the heart and extols heart as the primary organ of love (Mt.22:3739). Hence in all our endeavours on behalf of youth, especially the poorer ones, we would do well to blend our heads and hands with our hearts because, perhaps, that is how Don Bosco understood his mission towards the youth when he said, “Education is a matter of the heart”. - Jonas Kerketta sdb

YOUTH PASCH 2016
On 24 March 2016 students from some of the colleges and schools of Dimapur Province gathered in Don Bosco Institute for Development and Leadership, Dimapur for Youth Pasch 2016. There were 145 participants. This was the first Youth Pasch held in Dimapur Province. The students were very enthusiastic and very happy to participate in this great event. All of us who came for the programme celebrated all the events of Paschal Triduum- Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. The students participated in the Youth Pasch with great amount of enthusiasm and joy.
faith in our formation. Faith is something that we have received as our heritage. It has to be nurtured and grown. At 6:45 pm we had the Holy Eucharist presided over by Fr. Bosco Perianayagam sdb, the Vice Provincial. Next followed Adoration service. On 25 March the Good Friday morning began with praise and worship session followed by singing practice and then we had our meal. At around 8:30 am all the members gathered in the hall and had a warm up session led by Brother Adaziio Joachim and Brother Sebastian Mushahary. At 9 am we had a session by Fr. CM Joseph sdb on the Sacrament of Reconciliation and forgiveness. He animated us beautifully on the need of going for confession. The way of the Cross was from the School to the Hall which was animated by different groups at different stations. After tea, we got time for Gospel Sing-out practice. In the Evening we had the prayerful confessions.
The celebration began when the young people arrived on Holy Thursday. The programme started by 3:30 pm with the division of groups when the students were divided into nine teams. We had an Inaugural Function in which Mr. Mathang Kithan, retired IAS officer was the chief guest. Gangmei, FMA the Principal of Little Flower Higher Secondary School, Kohima where she explained beautifully the Year of Mercy and how we need to share mercy with others. At 6 pm we had another session led by Fr. Joshua the Principal of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School Dimapur, where he explained beautifully about the Resurrection of our Lord. At 9 pm we started the Vigil Mass. The main celebrant was Rev. Fr. Nestor Guria sdb, Provincial of Dimapur Province. On the last day 27 March (Sunday), we started our day with praise and worship led by Brother Elvis. Around 9 .30 am we had the Holy Mass presided over by Fr. Joshua Gangmei sdb. At 2 pm we had Gospel sing-out and skit competitions. Many dignitaries and invited guests had come for the programme. This was followed by cultural evening starting around 6: 00 pm. We had the final gathering where we thanked everyone and specially the organizers. We thanked in a special way our dear Fr. C.T. Varghese sdb, Director of the Institute for organizing such a beautiful event for the benefit of the young people. We also thanked Fr. Joshua sdb, Sr. Lucy Gongmei fma, Sr. Maria Scaria, Superior of
Auxilium Convent, Sr. Ethel fma, Sr. Mary Kithan fma and the Brothers: Thoviho Elvis sdb, Adaziio Joachim sdb, Sebastian Mushahary sdb, Donald Savio sdb, who by their commitment made this event colourful and meaningful . MAP FOR KARSANG TAKAR YOUTH
“It was 12.30 noon, 6 May 2016. I boarded the bus named Airbus near St. Thomas School, Shantipur-Sadiya in Assam. After an hour I embarked on a ferry that took us to Dhola Ghat across the mighty Brahmaputra after cruising on its turbulent waters for an hour or so. As I sat atop the roof of the ferry with the handy cam in hand, I had a wonderful experience of God’s wondrous creation – the roaring sound of foamy waves hitting our motorized boat, the criss-crossing of various types/sizes of mechanized boats, some boats even manually-piloted by brave fishermen, variety of water birds flying in different directions…and then the awe-inspiring sight of the newly constructed (to be inaugurated shortly) Sadiya bridge, 9.58 kms long, longest river-bridge in India and second longest in Asia…” DL Editor, while returning from Karsang Takar, Sadiya. Fr. Thomas Kalapurackal sdb, director of I-CARD, Jorhat, organized a two-day long intensive Media Awareness Programme (MAP) for the Mising youth of Karsang Takar at Shantipur-Sadiya, Assam, from 04 to 05 May 2016. Fr. Jonas Kerketta sdb was the resource person and was locally assisted by Mr. Rajen Pegu and Miss Genevieve Pegu (graduate in Mass Communication from St. Anthony’s College, Shillong).
The resource person through interactive sessions explained to the youthful participants the meaning, process, elements and types/forms of communication. The participants were made aware of the long history of telecommunication: from oral to literate culture, the mechanization of writing – birth of mass media, the audio-visual revolution till the advent of social media. The participants were also introduced to the Visual Media like pictorial and textual posters, different types of collages, etc. They were also introduced to dramatization skills like skits, street plays, one act/three act plays, et al. In the brief period of theoretical-cumpractical sessions the three teams of participants came out with three beautifully prepared collages on the themes of ‘Importance of Sports’, ‘Festivals’, and ‘Cleanliness’. The three teams combined their talents and performed a street theatre on the exodus of youth seeking for jobs in Bengaluru and other mega cities of India. The participating youth were all Hindus (with the exception of three Christians). But they skillfully and with great devotion enacted the “Way of the Cross” in which the part of Jesus was remarkably played by a Hindu boy. -DL Correspondent

JOURNALISM COURSE IN SALESIAN COLLEGE On 16 and 17 May 2016 Salesian College of Higher Education, Dimapur, organized a two-day long basic course in print journalism in which 48 second year students participated. Fr. Jonas Kerketta, from Christ King Parish, Kohima, was the resource person. The resource person first briefly dealt with the meaning, elements, process and types of communication. He helped the students to understand the anatomy of a newspaper. He then explained to them the meaning of the term ‘journalism’, characteristics, elements and types of news. The participants were also briefly introduced to different national and international news agencies. The participants were divided into six groups and were assigned to bring out a ‘newspaper’ of their

own. This exercise was conducted to help the students to have practice in writing proper headlines, leads, news reports, features, press releases, and letters to the editor. The participants were encouraged to develop a ‘nose for news’ and to contribute news reports and articles to their own diocesan and religious/province newsletters and periodicals. Practice of journalism was presented more as a mission than a profession. Referring to the Bible the resource person said, “For Jerusalem’s sake I will not keep silent…” ( Is. 62:1) and urged the students to gradually become “the voice of the voiceless”. - DL Correspondant
CHRIST KING CHURCH
HONOURS MARY The members of the Christ King Church, Kohima, concluded the Marian Month of May on 29 May 2016 with a procession from Don Bosco Kohima Campus to Christ King Church. The procession began at 2.00 pm with an introductory talk by Fr. Dr. A. J. Sebastian. He narrated the origins of the feast of Mary Help of Christians (MHC), from the apostolic times to the battle of Lepanto where Christendom ultimately triumphed through the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin and the recitation of the Holy Rosary. Fr. Sebastian also highlighted the glories of Mary and recommended the faithful gathered to have devotion to MHC if they wished their prayers to be answered. That was how
St. John Bosco got many of his prayers answered. The procession culminated in the Adoration Service in the Christ King Church, Kohima village. The Adoration Service was conducted by Fr. Paul Punii. The bier with the statue of MHC was flanked by Altar servers and carried by the members of Thepfukho Krotho (Men’s Association). Many devotees including representatives from various associations like Legion of Mary, Jesus Youth, Catholic Youth Association, Junior Catholic Association, boarding boys and girls, and a sizeable number of lay faithful devoutly participated in the Marian procession.

SRI LANKA HOSTS BOSCOM South Asia Governing Body Meeting at Don Bosco, Negombo, Sri Lanka, was inaugurated by Fr. Godfrey D’Souza, Provincial incharge of Social Communications, in the presence of Fr. Joe Almeida sdb, Provincial of the Salesian Vice Province of Sri Lanka, Fr. Joaquim Fernandes sdb, Regional Delegate for Boscom South Asia, Fr. A. Raj sdb, Executive Secretary, and the delegates of South Asian provinces on April 2-3, 2016. “Sri Lanka has gone through serious war times. People still have sad memories of the mass killings and destruction of lives. We try to provide as much of professional help we can in overcoming the fear and insecurity deeply experienced by the people,” informed Fr. Joe explaining the situation of the country. He felt extremely happy to see this meeting organized for the first time in this country. `Social Communications department is the most important department; it needs to help the other departments of our South Asia provinces,` wrote Fr. Maria Arokiam Kanaga, Regional Councillor for South Asia, during the previous BOSCOM South Asia Governing Body Meeting. The report read during the meeting reminded the delegates of the focus to work for the young. Fr. Godfrey D`Souza, Provin-
cial in-charge of Social Communications, BOSCOM South Asia reiterated the need to be effective communicators of the Salesian life, its vision and its activities to the young in South Asia and to the world. This meeting was about synergizing all the initiatives of the 12 Salesian provinces of South Asia.

Each delegate of the province shared three strengths and weaknesses and presented one unique plan for the respective province, and sought collaboration from the other provinces in their activities to promote the charism of Don Bosco. Creating a Writers Forum, redesigning the Salesian South Asia website, dubbing the Video Messages of the Rector Major into regional languages, Networking of the activities in the province and steps in aiding the other departments of the provinces, were some of the major topics deliberated upon during the meeting. The United Nations on September 25th 2015, adopted a set of goals to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Boscom South Asia will be actively taking part in achieving some of the goals. Fr. Joe Almeida sdb, launched the new book entitled “World Cine-

Sweeping Principal of Bosco B.Ed Collage Dimapur are effective tools for identifying the bright ones. What are some of the things that you do to motivate your students?
Don’t think that I am going to speak about a principal who sweeps the ground like the “Swatch Bharat” sweepers. I wish to introduce Fr Sabu the principal of Bosco B.Ed. College Dimapur who is fond of sweeping not ground but ranks. This year he brought the college to its heights with magnificent results that comprised of all the top 10 ranks. Lets us listen to him for a while. What was your first reaction when you heard about the ranks? Were they expected?
First of all I tell them that getting a rank is not difficult. As I was able to get ranks both for my B. Ed. and M. Ed. (4th from NU and 2nd from Dibrugarh University) I always had a craze for ranks that could be achieved by my students. They were encouraged to take things seriously. We need to convince them that they can achieve it. I used to tell them that skill in study and skill in writing an examination are two different things. Though both are equally important, I would even say that skill in writing, in a way, is more important when it comes to scoring high marks. The examiners are not aware of the IQ of the students. They just give the marks according to what they see written in the answer sheets.

A tearful farewell was given to Mr. Suosahie Philip Dzüvichü, the first catechist of Christ King Church, Kohima village, nay of whole Nagaland, during the Requiem Mass presided over by Bishop James Thoppil DD of Kohima Diocese and concelebrated by 21 priests in the presence of a large congregation of the faithful at Christ King Church beginning at 3.00 pm on 02 April 2016. Later the mortal remains of Mr. Suosahie were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery below Christ King Hr. Sec. School, Kohima village. Bishop James, in his homily during the Requiem Mass described Mr. Philip as a pillar of the Catholic Church not only in the Christ King Parish but also in the whole Diocese of Kohima. Condolence messages were read out by Mr. Albert Keneingu on behalf of Shri T. R. Zeliang, Chief Minister of Nagaland, and Rt. Rev. Robert Kerketta SDB DD, former bishop of the undivided Dibrugarh Diocese. Fr. T. C. Joseph read out messages sent by Fr. Nestor Guria, Salesian Provincial of Dimapur Province as well as the messages of the former Provincials, Fr. Mathew Pulingathil sdb, Fr. Varghese Palathingal sdb, Fr. Thomas Mulayinkal sdb and Fr. James Poonthuruthil sdb. Fr. Peter Salew sdb (CKC Parish Priest) read a message on behalf of the Catholic community of Christ King Church. Dr. Rudro spoke on behalf of the Salesian Cooperators. Mr. Suosahie Philip Dzüvichü the youngest son of Late Vichalie Dzüvichü was born on 10 March 1932 in Lhisema (L) Khel, Kohima Village. After his studies he entered Government service. He was converted to the Catholic faith and received baptism on 24 December 1954 together with his friends Mr. Kevipralie Paulus, Mr. Neizo Louis, Mr. Sasielie Samuel, Mr. Kezesuohie Sylvester, Mr. Vayolie Valentine, Mr. Miapho Marcus, Mrs. Deinuo Diana and Mrs. Neipieü Naomi, most of whom have gone to their eternal home. They received baptism from Fr. Umberto Marocchino sdb at Naga Hospital, Kohima. Mr. Philip married Alhouü Albina of Kohima village on 24 October 1954. Deeply impressed with the Catholic faith and its practices, he decided to dedicate himself

to the service of the Church. Thus in 1955, at the age of 23 years, he was appointed as the first Catechist of Christ King Church, Kohima Village. He was awarded a medal and a citation of Apostolic Blessing from His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on the occasion of his Golden Jubilee as catechist in the year 2005. Mr. Suosahie Philip Dzüvichü, since the inception of the church in Kohima, has been actively involved in spreading the Gospel and the Catholic faith to different areas, particularly, Kohima, Zhamai, Zelume, Chizami, Phek, Lazami, Tesophenyu, Tsemenyu and Peren. His contribution to the Tenyidie Language has been in the form of translations. He has translated Prayer Books, Hymn Books, Seven Books of the Old Testament and other religious books. The Ura Academy had awarded him the B. A. Degree in Tenyidie. He also had the privilege of serving as the first President of the Angami Catholic Union, which was formed in 1988. In 1964 he led a team of Naga Catholics to the International Eucharistic Congress in Mumbai where they met His Holiness Pope Paul VI. In 1975 he participated in the World Encounter of Catechists in Rome and Lourdes (France) and made a pilgrimage to Holy Land in the year 2012. The Christ King Church in Kohima Village which he has nurtured for the past 61 years has a total number of 3844 Catholics. During this period two local Priests, namely Fr. Keduoneilie Alex Vizo and Fr. Visosieo Solomon Vizo, were ordained, while Sr. Medokuonuo Margaret Sekhose MSMHC and Sr. Akhonuo Mary UFC made their final profession in their respective congregations. The various

institutions that had been started in Kohima with his initiatives, namely Little Flower School in 1969, Don Bosco School in 1970, Bethany Medical Mission Center in 1972 and Mt. Tabor Retreat House in 1980, are now flourishing significantly in the region. As a catechist he worked with Bishop Robert Kerketta SDB DD (Bishop Emeritus of Dibrugarh and Tezpur), Lt. Bishop Abraham Alangimattathil SDB DD, Bishop Jose Mukala DD (Bishop Emeritus of Kohima) and Bishop James Thoppil DD.

Mr. Suosahie Philip Dzüvichü passed away at his residence on 01 April 2016 after a prolonged illness. He has left behind his wife Mrs. Alhouü Albina, five sons and five daughters and a number of grandchildren. As a sign of our heartfelt gratitude to him for all he has done for us, we earnestly pray the good Lord to reward Lt. Mr. Suosahie Philip and bless his family abundantly. REFLECTIONS FROM THE PROVINCIAL CHAPTER
The 12th Provincial Chapter of the Salesian Province of Dimapur was held from 04 to 08 April 2016. It was ably moderated by Rev. Fr. Chittissery (CM) Joseph. As the deliberations of the said Chapter will be in our hands after their approval, below we have some of the precious thoughts shared by Rev. Fr. K. A. Joseph sdb (former Provincial of Kolkata and New Delhi Provinces) who preached for the full day recollection on 4th April and delivered the keynote address on the first day of the Provincial Chapter on 5th April, by Bishop Joseph Aind SDB DD of Dibrugarh, Bishop George Palliparambil SDB DD of Miao and Rev. is crisis in religious life. Vocations are dwindling. Once Ranchi was a vocation centre, not any more. Society and culture have changed. One SMI Sister was speaking to her nieces about vocations. They replied: “How did you get this silly idea of becoming a Nun?” Today’s secularized society feels God is not needed. It is necessary to imbibe “passion for Christ and passion for humanity”. A group of superiors studied religious life from another perspective: Why are Congregations still flourishing with vocations and are relevant?
Full day Recollection:
Those congregations are vibrant who remember why they were founded. There were 4000 MC Sisters when Mother Teresa died. This was unique and had also a Congregation of contemplative Fathers and Sisters, friends of mother Teresa, collaborators all over. She had touched the heart of humanity. She ensured that the Sisters remain zealous. They had a fourth vow: work for the poorest of the poor all their life. She closed all diversions from her aim of serving in the streets. She objected to the idea of starting a boarding for children. She would not have electric pumps, no fans. She wanted the living standards of the poor. Poor Bengali families would serve a cup of tea and two biscuits. Sometimes they had nothing and so they would excuse saying that they would not be at home. So Mother Teresa passed a rule that her Sisters would not take even two biscuits and a cup of tea anywhere outside. Once five bishops stayed in the MC provincial house. They visited Mother Teresa’s home. They found the stench of the poor hard to bear but no-
In order to prepare spiritually for this important triennial Provincial event, a full day recollection was held on 04 April commencing at 9.00 am. It was well-animated by Rev. Fr. K. A. Jose sdb, former Provincial of Kolkata and New Delhi Provinces. In his first talk Fr. K. A. Joseph said he was happy to return to this missionary province, like the South American missions. Instead of using papers he preferred to speak from his heart: During his visit to Lousiana for mission appeal in 1992, his cousin working in a Franciscan college of Sisters in Iowa took him for a wedding jubilee Mass in the convent chapel. He was shocked to find that most of the Sisters were very old. After Mass Sr. Provincial cut the jubilee cake. She was 75 years, the youngest member in the Congregation! But she was quite positive about her Congregation. But today will that Congregation be existing? There

ticed that the novices were very happy. St. John Paul II told the Sisters: you have been faithful to your foundress. Many will come with ideas to change – do not listen to them – follow your mother… Coming to us: why were we founded? For the poor youngsters who are our treasures. While visiting Ranchi, the welcome programme for Fr. Chavez was spoilt due heavy rains. But Fr. Chavez walked through the flooded path and was welcomed by the noisy children. Some children said ‘today we have seen Don Bosco among us’. He had the passion of Don Bosco – he talked two hours to the children in the church which was apparently turned into a hall. There are houses where there are no more youngsters – this is the death of a Salesian house. We have more time for ourselves but then for what – where is our reason for existence: the youngsters? Those congregations which are alive today pass on their charism to their neighbourhood. Don Bosco passed on his charism to his boys, friends and helpers. This is natural – a tree brings out many young ones below it because seeds fall and young ones grow. We have our Salesian co-operators; today our strength is our past pupils (3rd Order) who guided the relic around the world. In fact, the Vatican warned that it would involve a huge expense. Fr. Chavez replied: ‘our past pupils will take care of that’. The past pupils raised the fund, met the officers, arranged the programme... let us therefore believe in our young people – this is a vital sign of our

charism – we need them for our survival – this is the way Don Bosco lived, organized and built up the society. If this is true with the people outside, how much more we should do this with the people inside: teaches, students, parents... Those Congregations are alive that have a deep spiritual life: only a spiritual life can maintain a religious Congregation – relationship with God – love of Eucharist –sacraments – deep spiritual life. When we become careless about spiritual life we become nonsensical. Fr. Gutierrez of liberation theology was in crisis and was planning to leave religious life. His friend Henry told him “spend some time with Mother Teresa”. He met mother Teresa in Paris and poured out his emptiness for one hour. “Haven’t you something to tell me? Do you really pray? Gutierrez went back and wrote “The return of the Prodigal”. It was his life-story. He spent his life with the mentally retarded. Life is passing on life to these people – mystics, prophets and servants: this is where we should be anchored for a flourishing future. Those congregations are vibrant that are deeply attached to the church: they love the church, they follow the church. Following the church is the sign of vitality of the congregation. Devotion to the pope is our characteristic. If we are not devoted, there is no communion. When communion is disrupted the congregation dies.

In this Chapter you need to ask: “what more can we do to further our charism, to bring Don Bosco, Jesus to the youth”? On 5 April Bishop Joseph Aind of Dibrugarh presided over the Mass. He said he was happy to be with us, to see old and young faces. He was happy especially to see Fr. K. A. Joseph who once was his rector. He encouraged the Chapter members to bring Christ to the youth following the example of Don Bosco himself.
In an interview by Civilta Cattolica he was asked, “Who are you?” “I, Bergoglio is a sinner but have experienced the mercy of God” Pope Francis replied. He wanted to turn the church round into holiness, into a church of the poor, a church of the people. We become prophets of community when we allow God to transforms us into his servants. Managers do things rightly – we religious and educationists try to do the right things. When we are filled with grace of God, we look for opportunities to be servants – we become countercultural to the secularist mentality.

Nine of our clerics dedicated themselves to the service of the Lord and his people in perpetuum as they made their final Religious Profession in the presence of Rev. Fr. Nestor Guria sdb, Provincial, on 22 May 2016. The ceremony of the religious professions was held during the Eucharistic celebration in the Church of Mary Immaculate, Imphal in Manipur. The ceremony was attended by many Salesians, priests, religious and laity including a group of 56 youth who are members of the Catholic Youth Association and Catholic Junior Association from Christ King Parish, Kohima. FIRST PROFESSION In a moving religious ceremony during the Holy Eucharist in St. Maria Goretti Church, Zubza – Kohima, 16 young Novices made their first Religious Profession in the presence of Rev. Fr. Nestor Guria sdb (Provincial), Fr. P. M. Joseph sdb (Novice Master), Fr. Elow Samuel sdb (Parish Priest of Sechu – Zubza near Kohima), many concelebrating priests, religious and laity including many parents and relatives of the Novices. The newly professed Novices are: Kapeo Timothy, Kharia John, Kindo Nikhil, Kujur Bimal, Kullu Probin, Newme Isaiah, Panmei Ignatius, Reamei George, Seyievizo Sylvester, Thaimei Reuben, Thamunga Augustine, Thamungnga Anthony, Thangkholal Khongsai Vincent, Toppo Binoy, Kujur Amit (ING) and Monsing Phangcho Moses (ING). -DL Correspondent
MISSION
AMGURI
Don Bosco Amguri : Then & Now Don Bosco Amguri, can always boast of being the first in the province of Dimapur, first at least in alphabetical order and happily first also in some other areas including the DB Bicentenary Quiz last October and in the football and square ball matches recently! We are three in one: A high school with 1215 students, a parish with over 600 Christians and a pre-novitiate, initially with 13 pre-novices 11 of whom went to the novitiate at the end of May. Some out of the ordinary happenings of our life here: In connection with the bicentenary celebrations we got a very fine statue of Don Bosco. And now from above the portico on the first floor , Don Bosco is literally watching over our students , during the school assembly and the recreations! Last September Joe Rodrigues from Mumbai together with his wife Brenda conducted a very lively and interesting animation programme for the students of class 9 & 10 and for the teachers of our school as well as for the pre-novices. They also conducted a selfdefense programme for the girls of our neighbouring Arunodoi junior college. The first day of class for the nursery kids of our school is a special occasion for everyone ; for some of the kids who are separated from their parents for the first time it is a traumatic experience ; the initiation ceremony with writing the first alphabet on rice is a comic delight for the teachers and onlookers , for the pre-novices it is a surprise to see the mountain of gamosas (Assamese scarf) and the heaps of rice which are collected for the occasion and which they are deputed to secure. The sports-week in the school usually has some eminent personality from the academic or secular world. This year we had our own confrere Fr. P. X Andrew doing the honours and he did it brilliantly,
holding the student community enthralled. Our school has double sections up to Class 7. To provide classrooms for classes 8, 9 & 10 in the coming years construction is going on. The parish is quietly progressing under our parish priest Fr. Stanislaus Kerketta sdb. Our latest boast is a grotto that is being built mostly with the contributions of the parishioners. The Sunday oratories of the pre-novices and in particular the skit and quiz competitions and the oratory day under the leadership of the parish priest and the Counsellor enlivens the youth of the parish a lot. While they have their regular classes and formation programme, they are constantly in touch with the active salesian apostolate of the school and parish and thus have a realistic view of salesian life and mission. The team of the pre-novices is a formidable challenge to the school team as well as strong support
to it when needed. They are also involved with farming and cultivation of vegetables under the able guidance of the Counsellor and Administrator Fr. Innocent .The ginger cultivated here last year could easily have won the first prize in any agri expo. A Miraculous Escape from Danger In February we had the grace of a miraculous escape from certain death or permanent disability. One of the pre-novices was plucking coconuts from a very fruitful tree right beside the church. He had done his job and was coming joyfully down. Halfway through there was something that looked like a hump and as

he stopped to rest his feet on the humplike projection it gave way and he slipped and fell some 30 feet below. Onlookers were aghast and ran to his side fearing the worst as there were stones and sharp stumps right round the tree. We could not believe our eyes! He landed right in to a little hollow filled with a little sand just big enough to accommodate his seat! We could not call this anything else but a miracle of our Lady! The beginnings of Amguri Fr. Leo Tirkey sdb of happy memory is the founder of Don Bosco, Amguri. He was staying in Tuli from 18 Dec. 1983 and looking after the Amguri area of Jorhat parish. He was able to locate the land and bought it at the cost of great sacrifice to himself. The Town Committee with its Chairman Dr. Roy was eager to have a Don Bosco School at Amguri. The school was started on 18 May 1985.Fr.Leo used to come from Tuli and conduct the school. On 1st October 1985 he began staying definitively at Amguri. Later at the time of Fr. K. K. Thomas (Kannath) RIP, in 1992 a few boys were taken as borders and by 1996 it was closed. On 25 August 1996 Amguri was erected as a parish. Fr. Kuriakose Palathinkal, the confrere in charge at that time was appointed Parish Priest. The first batch of six students appeared for the matriculation examinations in 1995 with all passing and one in 1st division. From 2001 bigger numbers began to appear for the same. In fact in 2001 the number that appeared was 27, all securing pass and eight in first division. In the last two years under the

dynamic and efficient leadership of Bro. Mathew Kaliyaden, our Headmaster, we had the best results and bigger numbers: 47 appeared in 2014 and 37 secured 1st div. and 10, in 2nd.; In 2015, 57 appeared and 49 secured first and eight second division. In 2008 the pre-novitiate was opened and the house canonically erected with Fr. V. A. Thomas (Vengakunnel) as the first Rector. The first batch of pre-novices reached here on 31 May .The present batch is the 8th. Gone but not forgotten! Fr. Leo Tirkey is fondly remembered by the neighbours and the older generation of parents and students. When one visits the neighbourhood it is a delight to hear many of the older generation speaking of Fr. Leo with great affection. They recall how he had to put up with many difficulties and face hostility and even imprisonment. Not a few of his first students, now fathers of families and government servants, speak with admiration about his dedication to the welfare of the students and his great love for Jesus Christ. They remark how he used to speak often about Jesus. The most interesting development is that one of these exstudents wants by all means now to become a baptized disciple of Christ together with his family! Fr.
