Setting the Innovation Standard

Nominations for the PTEN Innovation Awards open on March 20.

I have spent the past several years covering the tool and equipment industry, working closely with manufacturers, distributors, and technicians to better understand how innovation shows up in the shop. PTEN has long played an important role in highlighting those advancements, and I am excited to continue that work here. By the time you are reading this, nominations for the PTEN Innovation Awards are just days away from being open. Each year, this program serves as a benchmark for innovation across the tool and equipment industry, highlighting products that meaningfully impact the way technicians work and shops operate.

The PTEN Innovation Awards have long been recognized for their focus on practical, shop relevant solutions. Rather than rewarding novelty alone, the program evaluates how tools and equipment improve efficiency, accuracy, and usability in real world service environments.

That emphasis is what gives the awards their continued significance and why they remain a trusted resource for technicians, shop owners, and industry

professionals. One of the strengths of the Innovation Awards is the breadth of products represented. Submissions span hand tools, diagnostics, shop equipment, and emerging technologies, reflecting how diverse and complex the modern repair landscape has become. Some innovations introduce new approaches to long standing challenges, while others refine existing solutions in ways that save time, reduce fatigue, or simplify workflow. Both types of advancement play an important role in moving the industry forward.

The judging process is designed to keep the technician and shop at the center of every evaluation. For manufacturers, the Innovation Awards provide an opportunity to clearly communicate how a product addresses a specific problem or need. For readers, the awards offer insight into where product development is focused and which solutions are gaining traction across the industry. Together, these perspectives help create a clearer picture of the trends shaping today’s shops.

As nominations open, the program once again invites the industry to share

the tools and equipment helping shape the future of service and repair.

Coverage of the Innovation Awards will continue across PTEN’s print, digital, and video platforms in the months ahead, providing context and insight into this year’s submissions and finalists. Good luck to all the manufcaturers!

Leveraging your scan tool’s strengths and recognizing weaknesses

Whether you’re chasing intermittent drivability complaints or verifying repairs, these techniques help you work smarter and elevate your diagnostic game.

Scan tools have come a long way since I began using them in the early 1980’s. My first exposure to such a tool was a pivotal point in my career. After connecting the tool to a few vehicles, I began to imagine what the future might look like one day. While back then the tool was mainly focused on engine operations, it was able to present vehicle information to the technician for analysis while sitting in the driver’s seat.

A few years later, I saw my first vehicle that displayed scan data on a center display, and this was the beginning of a new era of data. Today, we're seeing a data explosion, with some bringing much of the vehicle data right to the center stack and displaying it in ways making it easier for technicians to analyze and diagnose vehicles more efficiently (Figure 1)

Today, we have access to not only extensive data points spanning across multiple networks, but we also have access to contextual data such as service information and, in certain instances, artificial intelligence, which we will dive into later in this article. In my professional opinion, technicians who possess the necessary skills and knowledge to utilize this information will generally encounter less friction when servicing modern automobiles.

MORE THAN A CODE READER

For the most part, the scan tool is translating coded data either being broadcast or the tool is polling (requesting) data from modules. We need to understand that it is always possible that the data being decoded by the scan tool, or the requests being made, may be subject to errors.

This holds true even for OEM tools. In fact, sometimes you may find yourself seeing an analog value, such as voltage, being displayed for a signal that doesn’t match the physical value being measured. Referencing service information in these instances may save you some

 Figure 1 — Mid 80’s Buick Reatta In-Car Scan Data
Photos courtesy of Scott Brown

grief. I saw such an issue recently on Diagnostic Network [diag.net/msg/ m1u492zrao0hdrvorkhlegnt1n/] where a no-code fuel gauge performance issue was being diagnosed. Repairs had already taken place, and the problem persisted. Action plans had been made based upon a discrepancy in the physi-

cally measured voltage versus the scan tool voltage level reported. Later in that thread, service information provided a clue by referring to a fault code related to the system under review:

“The Primary and Secondary Fuel Level Sensor Signals (saddle tanks or dual tanks) are hard-wired to the

Body Control Module (BCM). Both Fuel Level Sensor signals are a constant 12V. On a normally functioning system, the raw signal voltage will read between approximately 0.5V (full stop) and 4.5V (empty stop). When there is an open in the circuitry the signal circuit voltage is 12.0V. The data reading value on the scan tool is clipped to read 5.0V when the signal circuit is open. The BCM reads the voltage and converts the analog signals to digital signals. The digital signals are broadcast over the CAN bus,” (Figure 2).

So, as you can see, when performing diagnostics, take the time to validate your findings. Reference service information theory of operation, even on something that seems straightforward, because it can “byte” you!

HEALTH CHECKS – TOYOTA TECHSTREAM, AUTEL, BOSCH (SHOP MANAGEMENT INTEGRATION)

Automobiles are complicated machines, and as a service provider, we perform a full scan on pretty much every vehicle passing through our facility. One of the scan tools in our arsenal is the Bosch ADS 525x. It is wired up to our shop management program (Shop-Ware), and when we perform a full vehicle scan, the results are automatically published into the work order. This is an absolute time saver, and I hope other tools can be integrated this way in the future. Your shop management system may offer such features, so you might want to check into it.

One of the strengths I find to be highly useful is the EVAP System Performance Test (Figure 3). I’ve written about this in the past, and I believe this persistence is warranted. When you’re facing an evaporative system fault, this test is a great one to begin your diagnostics, as it will perform a baseline test to show you if the

 Figure 2 — Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor Voltage — Scan Tool vs Measured

problem currently exists. And if so, you can repeat this test once repairs have been performed. If the system passes, in most cases, the EVAP monitor will be set to complete.

ELECTRIC VEHICLE DATA

Based in Southern California, EVs and hybrids are popular in our market. Although today’s scan tools provide quite a bit of information, the visualization of that data leaves a lot to be desired. For many years now, we’ve been using the Autel scanners along with the EV add-on, and it has been improving ever since its introduction. We do a fair amount of pre-purchase vehicle inspections, and their tools help us inspect and produce battery health reports. In fact, Autel’s EV offerings provide the ability to read and gather additional information, often exceeding what the OEM offers. For example, if you were to perform a pre-purchase inspection on a Tesla Model 3, one of

 Figure 4 — Telsa Toolbox and Service Mode
 Figure 5 —Autel EV Diagnostics — Tesla Model Y

the checks we make is to gain some perspective on the battery and overall vehicle efficiency. Using Tesla’s official tool, Toolbox 3 (Figure 4) and their HV Battery CAN bus interrogation tool, you would be able to pull up some basic metrics, but what’s missing is historical data on charging, charging types, propulsion energy consumption, regeneration, and more. Of course, this could change down the road since Tesla is a Software Defined Vehicle (SDV). However, today it falls short of what Autel offers.

With the properly provisioned scan tool and EV add-on tools (Figure 5), one can quickly gather this information and compare the vehicle’s odometer to the energy numbers and gain a sense of the vehicle’s overall efficiency. Additionally, Autel has been continu-

ally enhancing their EV offerings by providing additional tools for gauging battery health.

DATA VISUALIZATION –DATA CHARTS & GRAPHS WITH FILTERS

As mentioned earlier, today’s vehicles produce a tremendous amount of data. This can lead to technicians becoming overwhelmed at times. Tools that allow the technician to effectively chart, graph, and display information help us not only understand more about what the vehicle’s behavior is, but also provide consumable information for our clients, especially when we’re able to share results. In my opinion, this adds value and helps to build credibility. Even if they’re not consuming it, we like to include this data within the work

order in case we ever need to refer to it later. Case in point, this is an example of a quality control (QC) road test we perform after some driveability-related complaints. Looking at the lower left of the screen in Figure 6 , you can see that the duration of this recording was 26 minutes. It’s easy to start drowning in data, and in some cases, it helps to visualize data in ways that help promote a better understanding of the vehicle’s condition and behavior. Most tools today allow for

THRO®: 500 LUMENS | CONSTANT-ON (HIGH): 100 LUMENS; RUNS 1.75 HOURS | ULTRA-THIN UNIBODY CONSTRUCTION

data graphing or charting over time, but some of these displays leave a lot to be desired. Many years ago, I started to see discussions around “cells” and how the on-board controller would reference data based on these cells. The only tool at the time I recall being able to display data in cells was the DRBIII, which was an OEM tool utilized by Chrysler Corporation at the time. Referring to Figure 6 , the graph/table displays the data populated across the engine’s operational range of

manifold pressure and RPM. The data is populated with the amount of trim applied to the fuel delivery calculation. Being able to view data in this fashion can be quite eye-opening for the driveability technician. For example, we recently had a vehicle arrive after having the gauntlet of parts replaced, trying to solve an intermittent poor idle, stalling complaint with a MIL with various fault codes. The issue was caused by a sticking EGR valve, which unfortunately had already

Figure 6 — LTFT Banks 1 & 2
 Figure 6 — LTFT Banks 1 & 2
 Figure 7 — EGR Sticking Open

been replaced. The clues were observed within the LTFT graph, as shown in Figure 7

Back more than 20 years ago, I started working for a professional racing team supporting engine performance calibration. We had recently set up a MoTeC system on a C5R Corvette and the calibration tools we used were quite remarkable and were able to display data in the ways discussed in this article. That, coupled with the data logging and analysis software, enabled us to visualize data in ways that really helped us understand performance metrics at a much higher level.

EVAP SYSTEM TESTS

OEM tools have their strengths (and weaknesses), and until you’ve seen what they have to offer, you’ll never know what you might be missing or disappointed with.

As mentioned earlier, the EVAP system performance test scan tools offer can be invaluable. In our state, we have an inspection and maintenance (I&M) program for vehicle emissions, which requires motorists to have their vehicles inspected every two years. Up until late 2025, motorists were allowed to have the EVAP OBD-II Readiness Monitor set as incomplete and still pass inspection.

Today, all monitors must be complete to pass inspection. As you know, EVAP Readiness isn’t an easy monitor to complete. Being able to leverage the power of a scan tool to help with completing monitors is golden. Capable tools can leverage the services running within the ECM to initiate the test routines needed to run and test the EVAP system. However, some conditions, such as soak time, temperature, etc., cannot be bypassed.

CONCLUSION

I have no doubt that there will be no shortage of data; it’s going to be up to the technician to make sense of it all and adapt to how the data can be accessed, analyzed, visualized, and more. With artificial intelligence, proper knowledge, and training, I have no doubt that you can be successful well into the future.

Setting New Standards for Hand Tools

Saving Time, Money & Headaches

In a professional shop, every lost minute matters. When a fastener rounds out or a bolt breaks, the job grinds to a halt, and so does productivity. It’s a frustration every technician knows well. At GripEdge Tools, we made it our mission to solve these everyday frustrations with a clear goal of reducing downtime, eliminating frustration, and increasing productivity. In 2017, that mission led to an innovative breakthrough engineered to redefine performance and reliability in hand tools: Rounding Prevention Technology (RPT™).

Rounding Prevention Technology (RPT™)

RPT is GripEdge Tools’ patented tip design for bits, sockets, and drivers. RPT provides up to 50% more grip on new fasteners and up to 400% more grip on damaged fasteners by shifting contact away from fastener corners and spreading load across a greater surface area. This profile reduces stress concentration, helping prevent rounding and limit cam-out.

The bi-directional design allows the tool to be worked in both directions, helping to loosen stuck hardware and drive a fastener back in when needed. RPT is integrated across our star, hex, and triple square hand drives, impact drives, Dual Action DriversTM , and L-Keys, enabling seamless use with standard ratchets and wrenches.

Designed to replace conventional tools, RPT performs reliably on both new and damaged fasteners. By minimizing stripped fasteners, RPT significantly reduces rework time, costs, and the frustration that comes with rounded hardware.

G-FORS™ (Foreign Object Removal System)

G-FORS is GripEdge Tools’ next evolution in extraction technology, building on the proven success of RPT. Designed to tackle everything from broken bolts to seized nuts, GFORS features a patented bidirectional, non-tapered geometry that locks onto hardware with exceptional grip.

By preventing fastener expansion and eliminating the need for redrilling, GFORS enables faster, more controlled extraction while reducing downtime and preserving surrounding material.

The G-FORS product line includes broken bolt and socket extractors, both engineered for maximum engagement and versatility across left- and right-hand threads. The patented G-FORS pusher rod is designed to quickly clear stuck fasteners from extractors, improving efficiency and tool readiness. Together, these features deliver a durable, high-performance alternative to conventional extraction tools.

“I ordered the 7-PC 3/8” Drive Short SAE RPT Hex Driver Set to remove a stripped Allen Head Oil Drain Plug. Had to use the 1/4” RPT bit on my 20” breaker bar to break free the drain plug.

GRIPEDGE RPT HEX DRIVER SET WORKS! The bit dug into the stripped recess. I had to pry the drain plug off my RPT bit. The advertised 400% more grip on stripped fasteners may be an understatement. I definitely recommend.”

ADAS tooling in the repair shop

While ADAS is an essential part of the automotive repair process, it’s important to know the systems, tools, and accessories needed to perform proper calibrations.

When I look at ADAS calibration from a practical standpoint, the first thing I think about isn’t theory or procedures, it’s tools. The reality is that the entire calibration process lives or dies on the quality, coverage, and accuracy of the equipment being used. Over time, I’ve found that no single system does everything perfectly, and the most effective setups are usually built around a combination of platforms rather than a single “all - in - one” solution.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SYSTEM

One of the primary systems we use is the Autel IA900, which combines optical wheel alignment, ADAS calibration targeting, and really strong scan tool functionality into a single integrated platform. From a workflow perspective, that integration matters more than most people realize. Being able to per-

form alignments, position targets, and initiate calibrations inside one system eliminates a lot of the variables that normally exist when you’re bouncing between separate tools. Having worked extensively with more traditional alignment and calibration platforms in the past, what stands out to me about the IA900 is the overall vehicle coverage

and how good the diagnostic side of the tool is. That becomes increasingly important as calibration work expands across domestic, Asian, and European platforms, especially in environments where mixed all makes and models are commonly seen.

Alongside full-size calibration frames, mobile calibration kits play a big

role in how we approach ADAS work, as we have a mobile division that services collision shops as well. We rely heavily on the TOPDON Three-in-One Radar System, particularly in those mobile environments. In real-world repair scenarios, radar-based systems are simply more common than camera-based systems, as the glass installers are mostly tooled up for it. Blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision radar systems now exist on a massive percentage of vehicles on the road. Because of that, radar calibration makes up a large share of day-to-day ADAS work in the shop, and mobile systems give you a practical way to handle those calibrations without the footprint or investment of a full alignment rack.

A SETUP THAT KEEPS GROWING

One of the realities of ADAS tooling that becomes obvious pretty quickly is that calibration targets are never really a finished purchase. New vehicle models introduce new target designs, revised patterns, and different reference distances on a regular basis. Even within the same manufacturer, different model years or trims can require different target configurations. Over time, most calibration setups naturally turn into a mix of aftermarket and OEM targets. In many cases, I’ve found that OEM targets are simply more consistent, especially on systems that are sensitive to target design. Honda’s LaneWatch system is a good example of that, where the OEM target tends to produce more reliable results due to its unique color contrast when compared to most aftermarket alternatives, even if it’s less convenient to store — that thing is big.

SUPPORTING TOOLS

Beyond the major hardware systems and targets, there’s a plethora of supporting tools that end up doing a lot of the heavy

 Your ADAS setup isn't just one tool, it's multiple elements that work together to perform effective calibrations. Photo courtesy of Keith Perkins

TOOL BRIEFING

lifting in ADAS calibrations. Measuring tools like tape measures, laser distance devices, plumb bobs, and digital angle gauges get used regularly. These tools are critical for verifying vehicle setup, target placement, and sensor orientation. Even simple digital angle gauges have become everyday tools, not just for calibration work but in general. ADAS calibration is fundamentally a measurement problem and solution, and without accurate measurement, it becomes difficult to confirm anything beyond the fact that a software function completed.

SPECIALTY TOOLS

Specialty tools also play an important role in bridging the gap between digital procedures and calibration reality. Blind spot detection and blind corner warning correction jigs are a good example. We use tools like the ADAS Blind Spot

Measuring and Alignment Tool, CJM908, from ADAS Aiming to measure the installation angles of blind spot radar sensors. Tools like this are useful both before calibration and after failed calibrations, because they help determine whether the system is dealing with a physical alignment issue that no scan tool can correct or just a repair or installation failure. In practice, these kinds of tools often answer questions that diagnostic software alone can’t.

UNDERSTANDING FUNDAMENTALS

Once the tooling side is in place, the process itself becomes easier to frame. There are two fundamental types of ADAS calibrations: static and dynamic. Static calibrations require a physical target setup, which can include radar reflectors, camera boards, or calibration mats. Dynamic calibrations are typically initiated through a scan tool and completed by driving the vehicle under specific operating conditions, such as specific speeds, road conditions, light-

ing conditions, and lane marking quality. The calibration process is far more than simply initiating a function in a scan tool and waiting for a completion message. The outcome of any calibration is entirely dependent on the vehicle being under the correct conditions, the targets being positioned accurately, and the entire system being repaired to the OEM procedure for that specific vehicle and option package.

That’s where service information starts to become just as important as hardware. Like most shops, we rely heavily on aftermarket service information platforms such as Identifix or Motologic, and they play a major role in everyday diagnostics and repair workflows. They provide fast access to procedures, wiring diagrams, both OE and aftermarket — if you’re into that sort of thing. But when it comes to ADAS,

 ADAS systems play a role in nearly every aspect of vehicle repair and maintenance — even windshield replacements.

I still find myself referencing OEM service information on a regular basis. Calibration procedures change frequently due to firmware updates inside camera and radar modules, revised target specifications, altered distances on updated compo - nents, or changes in environmental requirements. In some cases, entire procedures are replaced altogether. Aftermarket service information is getting better, but they don’t always reflect those changes in real time. OEM service information has become a core part of the calibration toolset, and the fact that most manufacturers offer short-term access for as low as twenty dollars makes it one of the most affordable tools in the entire process.

ADAS KEEPS EVOLVING

As ADAS systems continue to expand across vehicle platforms, the number of repair scenarios that involve calibration keeps growing. Windshield replacements, wheel alignments, suspension work, steering component replacements, bumper repairs, body panel replacements, ride height changes, and tire size changes all interact with ADAS systems in some way. A lot of these requirements aren’t immediately obvious, and they continue to evolve as manufacturers refine their ADAS integration into the vehicle. What that creates is a landscape where ADAS calibration is no longer, and really never was, a standalone specialty, but something that affects a wide range of everyday repairs. Another aspect of ADAS calibration that stands out to me is system validation, because there really is no tool to do this.

Modern vehicles can complete calibrations without setting warning lights or diagnostic trouble codes, even when system performance is compromised from an incorrectly performed calibration, or a vehicle that wasn’t repaired to exact OEM procedures. A camera may still detect lane mark-

ings, just with reduced accuracy. A radar sensor may still track objects, but with reduced range or incorrect angle. A collision mitigation system may still intervene, but later or less aggressively than designed. That’s why I tend to think of calibration less as a software task and more as a validation process. The goal isn’t just to complete a calibration, but to make sure the system is actually operating the way it was designed to, within the physical and environmental conditions outlined by the manufacturer.

Ultimately, the way I see ADAS calibration is that it isn’t defined by any single piece of equipment or service information. It’s defined by the combination of tools that support it. Scan tools initiate functions, targets provide reference points, service information defines requirements and procedures, and measuring tools validate the measurements. Each component plays a role, and the correctness of the calibration comes down to how well those components work together and how closely the service procedure is followed.

As vehicle technology continues to evolve, the calibration tool options will continue to evolve with it, and ADAS calibration will always live at the intersection of mechanical repair, diagnostics, and collision repair.

Lighten Your Load with APEX Four-Post Lift Ramps

Four-post lifts are probably the easiest style of lift to use. They’re also incredibly versatile. They provide unhampered access under and around the vehicle, are the industry standard for performing alignments, and can be equipped for brake, suspension and wheel work. They even make it possible to stack two vehicles in a single parking space.

However, while four-post lifts’ built-in approach ramps are ultra convenient and can accommodate most vehicles, they just don’t work for many sportscars, supercars, luxury sedans and lowered builds. For vehicles with low ground clearance, splitters, lips and front overhangs, traditional ramps may be too steep, making scraping a concern.

To address this challenge, shops may choose to invest in longer ramps to lower the approach angle. But many techs hesitate to go through the hassle of taking off heavy steel ramps, dragging over slightly less heavy extended ramps, and then reversing the process when the job is done.

Now there’s a new lightweight and durable solution for easing low vehicles onto four-post lifts. APEX 48-inch four-post lift ramps are built of solid high-density expanded polystyrene (EPS) fully encapsulated in a high-performance polyurea elastomer coating to deliver smooth, stable vehicle loading while eliminating the flex, separation and premature wear common in other foam ramps.

Compared to 36-inch steel factory ramps that weigh 44 pounds apiece, APEX ramps are a full foot longer at half the weight: 22 pounds each. APEX ramps also have integrated thermoplastic handles molded directly into the body to make them easy to quickly lift, carry and position with just one hand.

APEX four-post lift ramps deliver a smooth 5.7-degree approach angle with 5 inches of lift, making them ideal not just for lowriders and performance vehicles, but also for those with standard ride heights.

These aren’t “off-the-rack” may-fit products. APEX lift ramps are engineered specifically for BendPak HD-7 and HD-9 Series four-post lifts to deliver factory-grade engagement, stability and safety. The hook nose geometry, ramp profile and pocket engagement are all matched to the ramp receivers on these BendPak models for a positive, repeatable fit.

APEX four-post lift ramps are designed for true mechanical strength. A precision-formed S-shaped insert anchors deep within the foam core, distributing load forces through the entire ramp rather than just a surface joint. The proprietary assembly is fully encapsulated in polyurea, sealing out corrosion and preventing delamination. This design eliminates loosening, separation and fatigue, even after years of heavy use.

Q: How did the tool/equipment function as far as saving you time?

A: It saves me time because the darn thing just works. Once I got the software and drivers installed on whatever laptop I was going to be using (I have dedicated laptops for each carline I have OE scan tool software or J2534 programming programs on), things went very smoothly. There is a lot to be said for any product that just works.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The DG Technologies VSI NxGen PLUS is a next-generation, OEM-approved diagnostic interface built for every vehicle from 1996 through today’s newest platforms. It delivers fast, reliable connectivity with full J2534 support, DoIP and D-PDU capabilities for modern vehicles to perform OEM programming, calibrations, and pre/post scans. Built with secure-by-design architecture, it helps protect your shop and customers from emerging cybersecurity threats. From older ECUs to the latest EV platforms, the VSI NxGen PLUS gives collision and repair technicians the coverage, speed, and security needed to work on any vehicle.

Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?

A: An email from the company after registration gives an excellent process for the installation of the software and drivers.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: As easy as any J2534 interface. I suppose you could argue slightly easier, as with the vehicles I used it on, it just flat out worked without any drama.

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

A: It has a soft canvas case, so if you don’t put stuff away, it gives a nice pillow for the interface and cables to lie on. The case itself is robust and would allow easy transport for a more mobile type of situation.

Q: Was there a manual included? If so, did you use the manual, and was the manual easy to understand?

A: There is a Quick Start Guide. I will also say that support, both email and telephone, is swift, helpful, accurate, and polite.

Q: What features did you like?

A: I like the long USB cable, to be honest. The OBD cable isn’t necessarily short, but it isn’t as long as others. With the USB cable, the unit can rest inside the vehicle with the laptop/PC/tablet resting on a cart or under the hood. Some interfaces

have a longer OBD cable but shorter USB, and you end up with the interface lying on the windshield or hung up on the sideview mirror. So, using the VSI NexGen PLUS is less “clunky.”

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: I used it on GM, Ford, Honda, Toyota, Volvo, and Subaru vehicles for either the use of the factory scan tool for diagnostics and/or for programming of modules on said vehicles.

Q: Is there any way you could think of to improve or add to this tool?

A: I just can’t think of anything to improve. The unit feels robust and professional in quality, and like I said earlier, the thing just works.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: I would rate this a 10. I don’t give out 10’s lightly. I just don’t. But…I have to on this. I just like when things work. I like that when I call for support, I can get a hold of someone, and they seem to genuinely care. I like it when I email and promptly get an email back.

Tub O’ Towels Heavy Duty Dual Texture Cleaning Wipes

Q & A with Ashley Szeremet, vice president of marketing at FedPro.

Q: What makes this product innovative?

A : We’ve had the original Tub O’ Towels Heavy Duty Cleaning Wipes on the market for over 30 years now, and the solution in Tub O’ Towels itself is quite innovative. It can remove oil, grease, permanent marker, and really any hard-to-clean mess. For this new product, we took the powerful cleaning solution from our original heavy duty cleaning wipes and added a wipe with one rough side and one smooth side.

By doing this, though, we wanted to make sure the rough side wasn’t too rough because this product is also used as a hand cleaner. We didn’t want customers to feel like they’re rubbing their hands with sandpaper. We take great pride in having a versatile product that can be used not only on hands, but also on surfaces. These wipes are strong enough to remove tar and adhesives, yet gentle enough to be used on hands since they have lanolin, aloe vera, and vitamin E that act as hand conditioners.

Q: What was the inspiration behind creating this product?

A: It was 100 percent our customers. We read product reviews all the time and listen to customer feedback to find out how to make the next best thing when it comes to Tub O’ Towels. For years, they asked us for what they call a “scrubbing wipe.” Our original heavy duty cleaning wipes work really, really well without an abrasive component; however, some customers specifically like to have that extra, kind of gritty texture on a wipe for deeper cleaning.

Q: How will this product improve the lives of technicians and shop owners?

A: All of our products at FedPro are designed to save time and money. Our products might have more of a premium price tag; however, when you look at the time saved and the amount of use that you can get out of one of our products, you’re actually saving time and money. This product is no different. These dual-texture cleaning wipes prevent a

technician from having to interrupt the workflow to go clean their hands to greet a customer or answer a phone call. They can just grab a wipe, clean up quickly, and keep things going.

Q: What has been the feedback from technicians who’ve purchased this tool?

A: It’s been very positive. I think they’re happy that we listened and responded with this product. When you take a step back, listen to your customers, and take their feedback into account, it’s really the best market research that you can do. We’re not a company that puts out a ton of new products. We’re really selective with the products that we develop and put out in the market.

TOOL REVIEW: SUNEX 1/4" AIR BLOW GUN KIT

Reviewed by Brin Kline, president-technician at Assured Auto Works in Melbourne, Florida.

Q: How did the tool function as far as saving you time?

A: The velocity of the air that exits this gun is very impressive. Velocity with some adjustability is what you want in a blow gun, and this one does it better than any other blow gun I've used. Whether it's blowing off dust, debris, or degreaser, this gun does the job faster.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: The tool is very easy to use. Just connect to an air hose and start using the air gun.

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

A: The package is made of cardboard, but on the inside is a dense foam insert with custom cutouts to fit each of the parts included. The kit comes with the

blow gun, an air coupling, an adjustable nozzle, a venturi nozzle, and two different length rubber tip extensions.

Q: What features did you like?

A: I like that the gun is metal. It feels like it will last a long time and would withstand a good drop or any other casualty short of being run over by a car. I also like that the kit includes an adjustable nozzle, rubbertipped extensions, and most importantly, the venturi nozzle.

Less is more

Convenience is a major factor for Kiefer now that he’s using the S12XD.

“I think I’m just at a stage of life where — is it cheaper to organize my own tools? Yes. Could I find tools cheaper? Yes,” Kiefer says. “But it gives me what I need so that I don’t have to think about it. If I don’t have to think about the tools, if I can just focus on the car projects that I have and not be like, ‘Oh, I hope I have this tool.’ That’s really what’s most important for me.”

A few other convenience factors of this setup include the toolbox’s mobility and how easily a broken tool can be replaced.

Bryan Kiefer, shop owner of Kies Motorsports, a BMW and Porsche specialty shop in Hammonton, New Jersey, has a bit of a different approach than others when it comes to tool storage. Kiefer spent many years building up quite a large tool collection but has recently found that less is more.

DOWNSIZING HIS TOOLBOX

It’s been a little under a year since Kiefer switched from using his two large toolboxes to using the Sonic Tools S12XD, 8-drawer toolbox. The toolbox measures out to be 40-3/4” wide by 26-1/4” deep by 40-1/2” high. While to some this may not seem like enough space, for Kiefer, it’s the perfect amount.

The S12XD also came with the option of coming fully stocked with tools. Kiefer notes that he was able to pick which tool sets he wanted, and then everything came pre-organized in custom CNC foam. In the past, Kiefer

This shop owner made the decision to downsize his toolbox and has found greater efficiency and organization because of it.

Bryan Kiefer

cites organization as a bit of a pain point for himself.

“I tried everything in the market — all the different tool organizers,” Kiefer says. “I was very inefficient, and tools never ended up back [in the box].”

However, with his current setup, he notes that the organization of it played a big role in why he chose this toolbox.

“It’s basically impossible to mess up,” he says. “When I need something, we find it super-fast because everything is just perfectly organized … they did all my hard work for me.”

NEW TOOLBOX CONSIDERATIONS

Picking a home to store your tools is no simple matter, and the factors that matter most to you may change as you mature as a technician.

Kiefer notes that “time is money”, so being able to move his toolbox with him wherever he’s working saves him the time of having to go back and forth between his toolbox and the vehicle he’s working on. He can also use the top of the toolbox as a tray.

In the same vein of saving time, the tool sets that Kiefer chose for his setup come with a lifetime warranty, so when a tool breaks, all he has to do is take a picture of the broken tool, and he’s able to get a replacement in a day.

LOOKING AHEAD

Kiefer still has four empty components in his setup, but he’s in no hurry to fill them up. He explains that because his shop specializes in Porsche and BMW, his tools are fairly predictable.

“I haven’t had the itch to be like ‘I just want to buy more tools,’” Kiefer says. “It’s funny because I spent 20 years of my life accumulating all these tools, and now, they just sit over there because I got this little box from Sonic that’s efficient and works. It’s a ‘less is more’ thing when you have better quality.”

Kiefer's favorite part of his toolbox is how organized it is ... and the fact that it came pre-organized doesn't hurt either!
