Summit Truck Bodies touts $50 Million expansion

Summit Truck Bodies

Summit Truck Bodies recently celebrated the opening of its new 220,000-square-foot facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its Wathena headquarters. The $50 million investment expands Summit’s production capacity, creates room for continued growth and is expected to create 80 additional jobs, the company noted. The event, themed “Reaching New Heights,” brought together employees, community leaders, state and local officials, business partners and others who helped make the expansion possible. Guests heard remarks from Summit Truck Bodies CEO Kris Eidsness, Plant Manager Chris Walter, elected representatives, and economic development officials. Following the ceremony, attendees gathered for lunch and guided tours of the new facility. The expansion marks a major milestone for Summit Truck Bodies, which was founded in Wathena in 2003. The new facility includes 200,000 square feet of manufacturing space and 20,000 square feet of office space. It is connected to the company’s existing 132,000-square-foot facility, bringing Summit’s combined manufacturing and office footprint to approximately 352,000 square feet. Summit is continuing to transition operations into the new production and office areas. At the same time, the company is updating equipment and reconfiguring the existing building around the work that will continue there. The additional capacity will help Summit increase production of service and lube truck bodies, hydraulic cranes, tool systems and Advanced Safety Electronics controls for customers across North America, according to the company. The expansion also creates space to grow the company’s sales team and strengthen parts and service support in the Midwest and beyond.

An economic impact analysis cited during the event projects more than $21 million in purchases during the first 10 years, representing economic activity that extends beyond Summit to the communities and businesses that support its employees and operations. “Being from Wathena, I’m excited for this addition to our town and for the future opportunities it represents to the entire area,” Walter said. “This area has a lot of talented folks that are looking to better themselves and their families. You just have to provide them with the opportunities to succeed and they will find you.” Walter also recognized the state and local partners who supported the project, the contractors and craftspeople who completed the expansion safely, Summit’s business partners and the employees whose work made the company’s continued growth possible. He highlighted local trade schools as an important resource for connecting young people with careers that allow them to build with both their hands and their minds. Together, the new and reconfigured facilities are designed to support greater manufacturing efficiency, additional capacity and Summit’s long-term commitment to building products in Wathena.

Reading, Masterack combine to maximize upfit opportunities J. B. Poindexter & Co. businesses Reading Truck Equipment and Masterack are integrating their operations to create one of North America’s largest and most comprehensive commercial vehicle upfit organizations, JBPCO reported August 28. The integration brings together Masterack’s leadership in cargo management solutions for commercial vans and pickup trucks with Reading Truck Equipment’s nationwide network of commercial vehicle upfit, installation, parts and service locations, according to the news release. Together, the combined organization creates one of the industry’s broadest commercial vehicle upfit portfolios, giving customers access to expanded product offerings, greater geographic coverage and a more seamless experience from specification through installation and ongoing support.

JBPCO

“Bringing Masterack and Reading Truck Equipment together represents a significant step in strengthening our position as a leader in the commercial vehicle upfit industry,” said Norb Markert, interim president of Reading. “By combining our complementary capabilities, nationwide footprint and deep product expertise, we’re creating an organization that delivers more value to our customers through broader solutions, greater accessibility and a better overall experience. today while continuing to invest in the innovations that will shape the future of commercial vehicle upfitting.” While the organizations are integrating operationally, Masterack will continue to operate as a trusted brand, maintaining its product portfolio, customer relationships and long-standing reputation for quality and innovation, JBPCO noted. Together, Reading Truck Equipment and Masterack will continue investing in the products and capabilities that help commercial fleets and dealers operate more efficiently. Amerit expands again in Canada Amerit Fleet Solutions recently acquired Mississauga, Ontario-based Triple Diamond Truck and Trailer Repair. The acquisition builds on Amerit’s continued investment in the Canadian market following its acquisition of Pro Reefer earlier this year. It also brings together two longtime sister companies, Pro Reefer and Triple Diamond, that have worked alongside one another for years, the news release noted. By uniting under one organization, Pro Reefer is expanding its service capabilities, strengthening support for commercial fleets across Canada, and creating new opportunities to deliver even greater value to customers. Triple Diamond Truck and Trailer Repair is an MTO-certified commercial truck and trailer maintenance and repair provider. Operating from a 24,000-square-foot, 16-bay facility, the company offers comprehensive maintenance and repair services performed by licensed technicians with expertise across major OEM manufacturers. “Triple Diamond Truck and Trailer Repair has officially joined the Pro Reefer family,” said Thomas Vandermeer, CEO and president of Pro Reefer. “While this marks an important milestone for our organization, it also formalizes a relationship that has existed for years. As sister companies, we have always shared the same commitment to exceptional service, trusted

Amerit Fleet Solutions

partnerships, and doing the job right. Today we are proud to move forward together as one stronger organization.” Together, Pro Reefer and Triple Diamond are well positioned to build on their shared legacy while continuing to grow as part of Amerit. “Pro Reefer has continued to demonstrate its market leadership, customer focus, and operational excellence, making it a best-in-class acquisition platform for the Canadian market on behalf of Amerit.” said Adam Lev, vice president of corporate development at Amerit Fleet Solutions. “The acquisition of Triple Diamond builds on Amerit’s and Pro Reefer’s growth momentum and represents another important step in our longterm growth strategy.”

INDUSTRY News HDAW ‘goes big’ for final Texas fandango Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week, billed as the largest gathering of heavy-duty aftermarket professionals in North America, has opened registration for its 2027 conference, taking place Jan. 18-21 at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas. As HDAW prepares for its final year in its long-held location before entering a new chapter in 2028, this year’s theme—Big Trucks. Big Business. Big Celebration.—is meant to reflect the scale of opportunities in today’s heavy duty aftermarket while recognizing the relationships, partnerships and business growth the event has fostered over its twenty-one-year history. Leading HDAW’s milestone 2027 event are supplier co-chair Houman “HK” Kashanipour, president & CEO of Alliant Power, and distributor co-chair Tim Grabow, president of Blaine Brothers Family of Companies.

“HDAW has always been where this industry comes to make important business decisions,” said HK. “As we celebrate our final event in Grapevine, we’re bringing together even bigger opportunities to strengthen partnerships, discover new products and solutions, and set the course for the year ahead. It’s the kind of momentum that sustains businesses long after the event ends.” HDAW’27 will once again center on the experiences that keep attendees returning year after year, including the industry’s signature One-on-One Business Meetings Program, where distributors and suppliers strengthen partnerships and plan for the year ahead, face to face. The Product Expo is already on pace to sell out, reinforcing HDAW’s position as the aftermarket’s destination for discovering the latest products, tools and technologies. Attendees will also have access to an engaging keynote session, an insights

IAA 2026: What’s new, what’s coming to N. America? ‘Stars of the Year’ feature five new trailers By Kevin Jones

H

ANOVER, Germany—At IAA Transportation, the massive biennial commercial vehicle expo here, the latest innovations in trucks, trailers, and freight transport technology from around the world were on display across the 4 million sq. ft. of exhibition space spread across two dozen halls and pavilions.

The 2026 edition featured 1,589 exhibitors from 46 countries, with more than 150 world premieres and new products available to 140,000 visitors. It’s kind of a big deal.

Stars of the show The prestigious ‘Stars of the Year Awards’ were presented on Press Day at IAA Transportation 2026. “Once again, the ‘Stars of the Year Awards’ honor outstanding vehicles and technologies that set new benchmarks for the future of transport and logistics,” said Hildegard Müller, president of the VDA, the show organizer. “A walk through IAA Transportation makes one thing clear: Innovation never stands still. Each generation builds on the achievements of the one before it and takes the next step forward. That is exactly what today’s awards represent. They impressively demonstrate the momentum with which our industry is driving the transformation and shaping the future of transport and logistics.”

Volvo Trucks’ new electric truck range was named International Truck of the Year 2027 at IAA. IAA TRANSPORTATION / Lars Huebner

Winners included:

• Volvo Trucks’ new electric truck range has been named

International Truck of the Year 2027. The new generation, which includes the FH, FM, FMX, and FH Aero Electric model families, impressed the 24-member jury with its combination of longer range, a broad range of applications, high energy efficiency, and operational flexibility. • ZF won the Truck Innovation Award 2027 for its TraXon Hybrid technology. With TraXon Hybrid, ZF integrates hybrid technology directly into the transmission architecture of heavy commercial vehicles. The system combines ZF’s longstanding expertise in heavy-duty transmissions with the company’s experience in electrified powertrains, offering vehicle manufacturers an additional way to reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. • The central criterion for naming a vehicle International Van of the Year is its contribution to high standards of efficiency and safety, environmental and climate protection, and sustainability in the transport of light goods by road. The jury concluded that the new, fourth generation of the Renault Trafic E-Tech Electric meets these requirements exceptionally well. The Stellantis ProOne Compact Van took second place, while the new Farizon V7E and the latest Volkswagen Caddy Cargo shared third place.

Trailer highlights Schmitz Cargobull S.KO CITY with the S.CU MT-DUALEVAP TRU was the winner in the trailer body category at IAA this year. Schmitz Cargobull

The International Trailer Award 2027 recognized achievements across five categories, honoring developments that stand out for their technological innovation and practical solutions.

E V E N T C OV E R AG E | IAA TRANSPORTATION In the ‘Body’ category, first place went to Schmitz Cargobull for the S.KO CITY with the S.CU MT-DUALEVAP transport refrigeration unit. A key advantage of the new S.KO CITY is the optimized weight distribution thanks to the newly positioned kingpin. This increases the payload by up to 3,100 lbs. and shortens the overall length by almost 2 feet. The reduced distance between the tractor and the trailer also improves aerodynamics and reduces fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. Since the S.CU mt-DualEvap does not require an additional ceiling evaporator, the full interior height is available. This increases the load volume and improves air circulation. Three powerful evaporator fans integrated into the bulkhead enable uniform air flow. At the same time, the compact design ensures rapid cooling down—a clear advantage for frequent door openings in distribution transport. Humbaur Dry took second place with the FlexBox Dry, followed by D-Tec in third with the FV-VAC Steered Vacuumliner. Kögel claimed the International Trailer Award 2027 in the ‘Chassis’ category with the Kögel Light Plus, optimized for electric trucks. The e-optimized Kögel Light Plus was developed specifically for zero-emission tractor units. It is designed for all brands of electric tractor units and for cross-industry use. The vehicle is based on the proven Kögel Light Plus and combines lightweight construction, efficiency, and optimal load distribution into a tailor-made solution for electric heavy-duty transport. Specifically, the unit is designed to address the axle load challenges posed by electric tractors. The wheelbase, which has been shortened by about a foot, prevents axle load overload and ensures optimal load distribution throughout the entire trailer.

Second place went to BPW for its aluminum air suspension hanger bracket for the BPW Airlight II running gear. Junge Fahrzeugbau took third place with Trailerstar. In the ‘Components’ category, Kässbohrer impressed the jury with its Modular Floor System K.MFS, securing first place. Developed by Kässbohrer’s dedicated R&D team, the system introduces a completely new modular approach to load specific low-bed transportation. K.MFS enables operators to adapt trailer flooring according to the specific requirements of each transport operation, yielding greater flexibility, safer transport operations and higher equipment utilization. Carrier Transicold took second place with its innovative safety concept for the use of A2L refrigerants. MRF placed third with the ePeares Access System. The award in the ‘Future’ category went to Krone for its innovative TrAIler Health Monitoring System. With TrAIler Health, Krone is taking a new approach to digital fleet management: rather than providing fleet operators with ever more individual vehicle data, relevant information is consolidated into a clear and operationally useful health status for the trailer. “AI-supported algorithms developed in-house analyse, amongst other things, information on TPMS pressure anomalies, braking behaviour, the status of telematics devices and other subsystems,” explained Maximilian Birle, head of digital services at Krone Trailer. “This data is used to generate a standardized health status for the respective trailer. A clear traffic-light system indicates whether the vehicle is ready for use or whether it requires monitoring or urgent action.” Fliegl took second place with its chemical container chassis for use with electric tractor units. SDG Modultechnik secured third place with its modified diamond mounting system with a central pivot bearing. This year also marked the first presentation of the ‘Community’ Award. Selected by the community, the award went to Koluman for its Adaptive Hidden Sidewall Platform Trailer (AHSP). The system combines the multi-mission flexibility of a standard sidewall trailer with the open layout of a platform flatbed. The quick-adapting structure reduces wait times and increases equipment utilization across varied cargo types. TBB

The digital parts counter How enterprise AI and connected experiences are transforming heavy-duty parts sales By Kevin Jones

D

owntime is the ultimate enemy for commercial vehicle operators, and quite often the battle is won or lost at the parts counter. That’s the front line where service and repair specialists, distributors, and component manufacturers come together to deliver immediate solutions.

Historically, keeping trucks and trailers moving relied on the hard-won knowledge of veteran counter personnel who spent decades memorizing part cross-references, fitment nuances, and pricing structures. Today, that traditional operating model is under siege: those experienced specialists are retiring at a record pace, while digital-savvy fleet customers demand instant, accurate, and transparent buying experiences. To address this structural shift, MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers convened a Commercial Vehicle Pulse webinar featuring Shannon O’Brien, senior director of commercial vehicle programming at

MEMA; Ram ChandraSekar, founder and CEO of PhaseZero AI, an agentic AI commerce platform provider; and Bill Nunnery, senior director of aftermarket (Americas region) at Dana Incorporated. Their message to heavy-duty suppliers and distributors: In modern commercial vehicle markets, high-quality components and sound cataloging are merely “table stakes”—delivering a friction-free, digitally connected buying experience is what ultimately wins parts sales. And new AI tools will make parts easier to find, buy, sell, and support.

AI is changing parts search Across the heavy-duty aftermarket, organizations manage massive portfolios encompassing hundreds of thousands or even millions of SKUs. However, an estimated 92% of organizations have taken no formal action to capture institutional fitment, interchange, and pricing expertise before senior employees retire. As these industry veterans walk out the door, companies are left with significant knowledge gaps that legacy software cannot fill.

Compounding this loss of human capital is the pervasive issue of fragmented enterprise data. Supplier and distributor catalogs are frequently riddled with missing product attributes, inconsistent categorization, incomplete descriptions, and absent visual assets. When catalog and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems remain disconnected, internal employees are forced to act as a “human integration layer.” Sales representatives, catalog managers, and customer service teams spend hours toggling across multiple ERP screens, placing internal phone calls, sending emails, and seeking out senior colleagues just to answer routine inquiries regarding part fitment, stock availability, or order status. Every manual touchpoint introduces operational friction, increases costs, and delays customer response times. At the same time, the search for replacement components is undergoing a fundamental transformation. While standard search engines and supplier websites remain widely used, buyers are increasingly turning to generative

AI assistants such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, as Chandra explained. Through emerging integration frameworks like the Model Context Protocol (MCP), these AI tools can securely query private enterprise business data—such as live inventory, customer-specific pricing, and proprietary catalogs—rather than relying on public web content. This shift accommodates the complexities of CV parts procurement. Unlike light-vehicle buyers who typically search by year/make/model, heavy-duty buyers frequently begin their search with whatever information is available on the shop floor: a VMRS code, a technical specification, an old competitor part number, or a worn physical component sitting on the counter. During the presentation, PhaseZero demonstrated its Visual Search agent operating directly within an

AI workspace like Claude. A user can simply take a photo of an unmarked or damaged part and upload it. In seconds, the visual AI agent scans more than one million industrial parts, presents ranked matches with confidence scores, and provides a direct link to the product detail page showing real-time inventory—such as 86 units available and ready to ship.

Keeping it real Crucially, Chandra highlighted a boundary for the technology: AI must never be allowed to invent or hallucinate. Application fitment and cross-reference truth must always originate from verified industry catalog data. The role of AI is to connect that verified data with real-time inventory, customer-specific pricing, and the companion products required to complete a specific repair job.

But finding the correct part number is only half the equation. “This is a situation everyone in our industry already recognizes,” Chandra said. “The customer has found the right part and is ready to buy, but it is not available in the location that the customer wants on that particular day. So what happens next?” Nunnery, in turn, detailed how Dana addresses inventory constraints across its network of 10 distribution centers. By establishing real-time inventory visibility across all warehouses and deploying APIs to link distributor and supplier systems, companies can locate stock across the broader supply chain. If a customer’s primary distribution center lacks inventory, intelligent commerce platforms can locate parts at secondary distribution centers or recommend qualified, fulfillable alternative parts.

MacKay distribution study: Parts availability remains #1 challenge MacKay & Company has released its 2026 DataMac U.S. Distribution Report, offering market trends within the medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicle aftermarket distribution channels. The annual report offers insights from 260+ businesses—dealers, distributors, independent garages, auto parts stores and others. The report provides a detailed view into parts and service labor sales, inventory strategies and parts sourcing behaviors. Here are a few report highlights. Genuine OE brands account for over 60% of all parts purchased for resale or installation, according to the report. Dealers and engine distributors hold the largest shares among channels. However, some shifts are evident: Engine Distributors and Auto Parts stores are seeing increased adoption of aftermarket and non-OE parts in 2025 compared to prior years. In contrast, dealers and HDD/specialists are moving more toward OE. When asked, distribution channels identify parts availability as the top challenge facing the industry in 2025. Not surprising, when channels were asked how manufacturers can support channels, part availability is cited by 34% of respondents. Cost and pricing pressure comes in as the #3 challenge of 2025, but this is the area where the largest percentage, 38%, of distribution channels are calling for greater manufacturer support to manage ongoing cost pressures. The #2 challenge is labor constraints.

Parts pricing rose an average of 4% in 2025 compared to 2024—still elevated relative to long-term trends but significantly lower than the sharp 10.2% increase seen in 2022. Pricing varies across distribution channels, ranging from approximately 3.3% to 4.6%, reflecting differences in channel dynamics and shifts in the retail sales mix. Overall, the OE channel commands the largest portion of the aftermarket parts purchases for both first owners (53%) and subsequent owners (46%). As vehicles age, drop out of warranty or change ownership, parts and service sourcing tends to shift away from OE channels. A larger percent of parts are purchased through the HDD/ Specialist and the Independent Garage channels. This shift is influenced in part by price sensitivity, with further changes likely driven by availability and evolving customer preferences. At 25%, The HDD/Specialist channel has the second largest average parts market share for subsequent owners (23% for new vehicle owners). Independent Garages hold 6% for new vehicle owners and 14% for subsequent owners. A F T E R M A R K E T F O C U S | PARTS SALES “It’s just leveraging the technology that’s out there, whether it’s using APIs or AI to identify where that inventory is,” Nunnery said. “Typically, somebody has a part somewhere. It’s about moving it quickly where it needs to be.” And when an immediate order cannot be fulfilled, enterprise AI transforms that stockout into an actionable demand signal. Instead of allowing unfulfilled searches to disappear unrecorded, AI inventory agents capture lost demand, evaluate the revenue opportunity, and automatically alert account managers. Sales and supply chain teams can then coordinate proactively to fulfill the order, retaining both the customer relationship and the sale.

Streamlining commerce, post-sale support Winning B2B orders requires making routine purchasing completely effortless. Heavy-duty purchasing is characterized by high-volume, repeat

relevant products that can help the customer complete the job that is related to the part that he originally came to us with,” Chandra said. “That creates a better buying experience, and that is where AI can help today and lead to more part sales.” Additionally, Visual AI and automated analytics streamline returns and warranty processing, enabling customer support teams to resolve disputes rapidly. Analytics engines can also monitor buyer search drop-offs and unfulfilled queries, alerting sales managers when a customer relationship may be at risk so teams can intervene before business shifts to a competitor.

In today’s commercial vehicle market, product quality and standard cataloging are expected baseline requirements. By employing enterprise AI to deliver speed, total inventory visibility, and effortless purchasing experiences, heavy-duty suppliers and distributors can empower their workforce, protect customer relationships, and drive

long-term sales growth. “I do believe if you own the desktop experience, and can provide a great user experience for the customer, ultimately that wins,” Nunnery concluded. “And sometime customers are internal. Again, using technology to drive better efficiency and effectivity inside your company is just so important.” TBB

The strategic playbook: outcomes over hype Implementing enterprise AI does not require replacing core legacy systems. Private enterprise AI operates as an intelligent integration layer on top of existing ERPs, catalog databases, and access control frameworks. PhaseZero’s architecture unites three core capabilities: CxCommerce (executing transactions), CxAnalytics (identifying commercial growth opportunities), and Business-Ready AI Agents (driving daily workplace efficiency). Rea l-world implementat ions demonstrate the commercial impact of this approach, with industry distributors such as Bergey’s achieving 92.3% year-over-year digital sales growth, Betts Truck Parts generating 188% digital revenue growth, and Harman HVS seeing 38%+ YoY growth, according to Chandra’s presentation. When asked how executives should approach digital transformation, Dana’s Nunnery advised companies to “start with a business problem, not an AI project.” Leadership teams should establish cross-functional alignment groups—such as Dana’s internal “enhancement council”—to identify manual operational bottlenecks, focus on manageable and measurable use cases, and automate routine processes incrementally.

2026 NATDA Trailer Show sets new records The big show just keeps getting bigger: more dealers, more exhibitors

N

ASHVILLE—The 2026 NATDA Trailer Show delivered another recordbreaking year on several levels. Held once again at Music City Center, here, the September 1-3 event welcomed more than 4,700 industry professionals and 800+ dealerships to the largest event in show history.

“The double-digit growth we’ve seen over the past two years speaks volumes about the value the industry places on coming together,” said Rick McConnell, CEO of show organizer Trifecta Collective LLC. “People come to Nashville to see new products, strengthen relationships, learn from one another and find opportunities that help their businesses grow. This year’s attendance and engagement prove that the NATDA Trailer Show continues to be one of the most important gatherings in the trailer industry.” From six football fields of exhibits to expanded education, networking and dealer-focused experiences, the NATDA Trailer Show once again served as the light- and medium-duty trailer industry’s premier destination for discovering new products, building meaningful connections, and gaining the insights needed to grow a dealership. Indeed, with 88% of attendees holding purchasing influence and dealerships reporting an average projected spend of $555,000, the NATDA Trailer Show remains one of the industry’s most important business events of the year,

Education, training launch the week Before the exhibit hall opened, hundreds of attendees kicked off their NATDA Trailer Show experience with an education program featuring more than 30 expert-led sessions covering dealership operations, marketing, sales, leadership, business growth and industry trends. Many of these sessions reached capacity, with several drawing standing-roomonly crowds. Technicians also participated in hands-on training opportunities and NATDA’s Trailer Service Professional Certification program, gaining skills and certifications they can immediately apply back at their dealerships. Several training sessions were professionally recorded and will be available online

Six football fields of products, innovation The sold-out show floor with 310+ exhibitors remained the centerpiece of the 2026 NATDA Trailer Show experience. With over 325,000 square feet of exhibit space, extending into the lobby and surrounding streets, the show floor showcased the latest trailers, parts, accessories, technology, and dealership services from manufacturers and suppliers—all designed to improve operations and drive profitability. The 2027 NATDA Trailer Show will take place Aug. 31-Sept. 2, here again at Music City Center in Nashville.

QUALITY MATTERS. EVERY TIME.

ant decisions a trailer dealer can make, but it’s easier said than done. That was the premise for a National Association of Trailer Manufacturers dealer education session, “Beyond the Build,” at the NATDA Trailer Show this year. The goal was “to pull back the curtain” on the dealer-OEM relationship. To that end, industry veterans Johnny Shelton of North Carolina Trailers and Zach McCallley of Superstar Trailers detailed why the traditional vendor-customer relationship is no longer enough for a competitive advantage. To achieve sustainable scale, dealerships must shift from viewing manufacturers as simple suppliers to treating them as high-value partners. The core of this strategic evolution is for dealers to understand inventory is not merely “metal on the lot”—it is an investment portfolio requiring rigorous capital allocation and active management across the entire business. “Picking a manufacturer isn’t really a buying decision,” Shelton said. “It’s a decision about our dealership’s profit and our reputation.” Dealers also need to appreciate that manufacturers will be evaluating them as well, McCalley added. “The closer we can get to what they want out of you, the closer they will become to what we want out of them,” McCalley said. “And so this whole talk today is just trying to close that gap.”

To organize this shift in thinking, Shelton and McCauley introduced the COMMP Framework (Choose, Onboard, Measure, Manage, Perform). This detailed, objective approach—contained in a few pages of checklists and scorecards, built around an extensive questionnaire—provides dealers with the analytical tools to transform their procurement strategy into a high-performance investment engine. Essentially, the framework allows a dealer to measure OEMs against each other in order to make a sound decision on a potential partner. Viewing inventory through the lens of an investment portfolio is critical. When a dealer signs a new manufacturer, they are not just “buying trailers”—they are betting their dealership’s liquid capital and operational throughput on the manufacturer’s ability to execute. A dealership “bets” several high-value inputs, including: • Liquid capital, borrowing power: Cash reserves and floor plan lines tied up in stagnant or moving units. • Fixed assets: Physical lot space and facility “shelf space.” • Operational overhead: Human capital, payroll, and the opportunity cost of sales and service teams. • Reputational equity: The trust built with the local community over decades.

3/23/26 8:48 AM

10/5/26 1:26 PM

The most volatile input is the dealer’s reputation. When a manufacturer fails—whether through sub-par build quality, delayed delivery, or denied warranty claims—the customer does not seek recourse from the factory; they demand it from the dealer. To mitigate this risk, dealers must weight their expectations against the manufacturer’s requirements. That’s where the self-assessment comes in: Before selecting an OEM, the dealer needs to take a hard look at what the business has to offer the brand. “They look for a dealer in a large market with high visibility, nice clean facilities, high-performing motivated teams, efficient processes and SOPs,” McCalley said. “Dealerships that run effective ads, with strategies in place to move the metal; fast response times; the ability to run a full service parts and warranty department; high sales volume; and great customer service.”

• Establish a baseline: Before evalu-

ating a prospect, score your current best-performing manufacturer. This creates a “Strategic Benchmark” to measure all others against. • Weighted scoring: Rate prospects on a scale of 1 to 5 for both the Five Fs and the Bottom Five. • The threshold: A brand that scores a 5 on “Fit and Finish” but a 1 on

“Lead Time Reliability” represents a high risk of operational friction and should be avoided. Due diligence also requires a “collaborative posture” rather than a “competitor posture.” Call the closest existing dealer representing the brand. When approached as a partner, nearby dealers often share insights that lead to mutual benefits, such

Tough Loads. Easy Operation. Front-to-Back Flip Tarp Systems.

CHOOSE wisely: moving beyond the “Five Fs” In the selection phase, product quality is a baseline requirement, not a strategic differentiator. Many dealers succumb to “product myopia,” focusing exclusively on the physical trailer while ignoring the operational health of the manufacturing partner. Traditional buying focuses on the Five Fs : Frame, Features, Fit, Finish, and Final Price. While these drive consumer interest, they do not guarantee dealership profitability. A high-quality trailer from a poor operating partner is a liability. So dealers must prioritize the Bottom Five operational metrics: Product Market Fit, Lead Time Reliability, Warranty Support, Lead Generation, and Territory Protection. “How many of you filed a clearly legitimate warranty claim only for it to feel like you’re negotiating a hostage release from the manufacturer?” McCalley asked. “It’s brutal, and it’s something we often overlook when we pick up manufacturers.” To move beyond “gut-feeling” selection, dealers must utilize a formal scorecard.

E V E N T C OV E R AG E | NATDA TRAILER SHOW as “split shipping” to reduce freight costs on partial loads. High-impact questions include: • “How accurate are quoted lead times when production falls behind?” • “When a unit arrives built incorrectly, how does the factory respond?” • “Do they pay legitimate warranty claims at your full shop rate, and how fast is the reimbursement?” • “If you were starting today, would you sign with them again?” Once a partner is selected, the dealership must move from the agreement phase to the integration phase.

ONBOARD thoroughly: operationalizing the partnership A common operational failure is “accidental onboarding”—signing a contract and placing an order without preparing the dealership’s internal infrastructure. A manufacturer is not truly onboarded until every department is cross-functionally ready. Before the first unit arrives, the following must be finalized: • Sales: Knowledge of quotes, options, and order placement procedures. • Marketing: High-resolution content, brochures, and lead-routing integration. • Parts: Stocking levels for components and clear ordering systems. • Service/warranty: Possession of

manuals, PM schedules, and prenegotiated labor rates. • Accounting: Established payment terms, freight structures, and credit processing. The greatest threat to continuity is a relationship that lives exclusively on a single sales rep’s cell phone. If that rep leaves, the “brand intelligence” vanishes. So a partnership also must exist between the brand’s departments. Dealers must establish direct points of contact for accounting, warranty, and production to ensure that continuity regardless of personnel changes.

MEASURE the returns: the power of GP ROI Revenue is a metric that often masks capital inefficiency. A high-volume brand that requires excessive labor and capital to move is a “throughput killer.” To identify true winners, dealers must focus on Gross Profit ROI (Return on Inventory). GP ROI reveals how many gross profit dollars a brand returns for every dollar tied up in inventory cost annually. It can be calculated in a couple of ways: GP ROI = Annual Gross Profit / Average Inventory at Cost ; or GP ROI = Inventory Turns x Markup. Consider the “Brand B vs. Brand C” analysis. Both generate $500,000 in gross profit from $1M in tied-up capital. • Brand B: Requires 300 units. • Brand C: Requires 200 units.

The 30-Day COMMP action plan The COMMP framework transforms a dealership from a reactive buyer into a proactive investment manager. To execute this transformation, follow this 30-Day action plan: • Calculate returns: Determine the GP ROI for every brand in your current portfolio to identify your profit engines and your laggards. • Identify gaps: Run the onboarding checklist against your top three brands to find operational holes (e.g., missing service manuals or lack of direct accounting contacts). • Schedule reviews: Set data-backed meetings with your top and bottom-performing manufacturers to discuss shared risk and performance targets. • Execute and assign: Ensure every meeting ends with clear owners and dates for resolving outstanding issues. In this industry, the trailer is simply the product; the relationship is the investment.

While the total profit is identical, Brand C achieves the same financial result with 33% less labor, less sales friction, and lower operational overhead. These numbers provide the datadriven insight needed for active partnership management and growth.

MANAGE the partnership: shared risk and quarterly reviews Active management requires datadriven negotiations. For example, when a manufacturer asks a dealer to increase stock depth—thereby increasing the dealer’s risk—the dealer must demand that the manufacturer shares that risk with trade offs such as freight assistance or co-op funds. And without accountability, a meeting is merely a conversation. Every quarterly review must compare targets to actuals and conclude with a formal “Action Item List.” Every item must have an Owner and a Deadline. This ensures the partnership is a managed process rather than a passive relationship. “I’ll be honest: Depending on the quarter, we’ve probably had a bad score on every metric on this assessment,” Shelton said. “But you do what you can with what you have, and if you don’t have it all figured out, that’s fine. Just get started, and it’ll get easier as you go.”

PERFORM: building the dealer value proposition The manufacturer-dealer relationship is a two-way street. To expect elite support, a dealer must present themselves as an elite partner. This is the dealer’s “value proposition” to the manufacturer’s supply chain. Elite manufacturers do not want “order takers,” they want strategic representatives. When negotiating, stop focusing solely on today’s inventory problems and start “selling” your five-year growth plan: Explain how you will dominate the market, how you will train your team, and how you will represent their brand. By showing a manufacturer how their product fits into a larger, aggressive vision, the dealer moves from being a “customer” to being a vital strategic asset.

Built on the proven construction of Stoughton’s PureBlue refrigerated trailer, the new domestic refrigerated container combines a highly insulated structure with durable components and features designed specifically for intermodal operations, according to the manufacturer. The 53-ft. container features a 102-inch interior height and three-high stacking capability. Stoughton 53-ft. Domestic Refrigerated Container “Stoughton has extensive experience Stoughton Trailers engineering equipment that withstands the demands of both refrigerated transportation and intermodal operations,” said Todd Eicher, vice president The refrigeration unit is protected by a rugged galvanized of refrigerated products. “With our new refrigerated container, frame designed to safeguard the TRU during stacking and we’ve brought those strengths together in a design focused on transit. Polymer floor insulators replace wood, extending floor life by eliminating deterioration.

At the rear, Stoughton’s exclusive triple-wiper door seal is designed to maintain its shape and provide a consistently tight closure. Unlike conventional compression gaskets that can develop a permanent set over time, the triple-wiper design delivers proven airtight performance. Durability and corrosion protection are incorporated throughout the container. Most critical structural components are galvanized to help extend service life, while fully galvanized stacking posts incorporate protective clearance zones and drainage. A 4-3/4-in. upper casting is integrated within the insulation to maintain the container profile, and a recessed lower frame helps protect against IBC damage.

Clean, durable interior construction Stoughton designed the container to minimize exposed hardware inside the cargo area. Heavy-duty Huck fasteners create strong, vibration-resistant joints, while 3/8-inch blind fasteners minimize exposed interior fasteners and drilled holes for a cleaner interior. Cargo security is provided by heavy-duty double-lock rods. Heavy-duty 4-inch steel hinges with recessed hinge butts are engineered specifically for container applications. “With refrigerated freight, every detail that helps maintain temperature, protect the load and keep equipment operating reliably matters,” added Eicher. “From the sidewall construction and door seal to the galvanized structural components, duct floor and refrigeration-unit protection, this container was engineered with those priorities in mind.” Learn more at www.stoughtontrailers.com.

Hilltip

Hilltip’s SnowStriker SFT Flex targets versatility Hilltip recently introduced the SnowStriker SFT Flex expandable box plow, a versatile snow removal solution designed for tractors, loaders and skid steers from 1 to 4 tons. The plow combines the containment and productivity of a box plow with hydraulically extendable sections that allow operators to adapt the clearing width to changing conditions on the go. The SFT Flex is available in three sizes. The smallest provides an adjustable clearing width from 4 feet, 3 inches to 6 feet, 11 inches. The mid-range model adjusts from 4 feet, 11 inches to 8 feet, 2 inches. The largest model ranges from 5 feet, 11 inches to 9 feet, 6 inches. This flexibility allows operators to narrow the plow for tighter spaces or expand it for more productive clearing of larger driveways, yards and open parking areas. The blade is designed to tilt and oscillate as it moves over uneven ground, helping maintain contact with the surface for a cleaner scrape. For added versatility, the hydraulically actuated side plates of the SFT Flex can be independently folded, allowing the unit to act as a conventional straight-blade plow, rolling snow to either side. Relief valves allow the side plates to trip if an obstacle is hit to help prevent damage to the attachment. Steel, ice-cutting, and polyurethane cutting-edge options are available to accommodate various applications. Other options include LED edge markers, custom mountings, a 12V/24V electric valve, a plow shoe kit, a four-line hydraulic system and high-visibility orange paint. The SFT Flex is made from high-strength, powder-coated steel for high durability, while remaining lighter weight. The three models weigh 816 (model 13-21 SFT), 1,080 (model 15-25 SFT) and 1,190 pounds (model 18-29 SFT), making them compatible with a wide range of equipment. “Compared with other box plows, the SFT Flex offers unmatched versatility for use in a wider range of winter maintenance applications,” said Craig Sandmann, Managing Director for Hilltip North America. “Nothing else offers the same level of efficiency and precision with every pass.” The SFT Flex is backed by a two-year warranty. Visit www.hilltip.com for more information.

Fontaine Fifth Wheel’s “AWB” Air Slide product line will be discontinued and replaced by the “HDS” Air Slide product line as its recommended heavy-duty air slide bracket solution, the company reported. The transition reflects Fontaine’s ongoing commitment to providing customers with greater durability, simplified maintenance, and enhanced operational convenience. Introduced in 2022, the HDS was developed as the next-generation evolution of the AWB platform. The HDS incorporates multiple design enhancements that improve reliability, reduce maintenance requirements, and deliver a lower total cost of ownership compared to the legacy AWB design. One of the most significant advancements is the HDS bracket’s integrated flip-up blocking system for no-tilt operation, the supplier noted. Unlike AWB, which relies on a separate pull bar to block the top plate, the HDS enables operators to engage the no-tilt function using built-in flip-up blocks. This is designed to eliminate the need to store, transport, and manage a separate pull bar when the no-tilt feature is not in use. The flip-up block design also is meant to provide added flexibility for fleets. Units can be converted to a no-tilt configuration in the field through the installation of KIT-NO-TILT, eliminating the need to replace the entire assembly. This allows customers to adapt equipment to changing operational requirements while minimizing downtime and replacement costs. Fontaine Fifth Wheel “The HDS Air Slide product line was developed to provide a more efficient and reliable solution for today’s fleets operating in heavy-duty applications,” said Aaron Puckett, senior v.p. of business development. “The HDS delivers meaningful value to customers while providing a clear upgrade path from the AWB platform.” Another key enhancement is the incorporation of maintenance-free bracket liners that require no lubrication. The HDS liner system significantly reduces routine service requirements, helping fleets lower operating costs and maximize uptime. The HDS also features an updated cylinder and linkage design that reduces overall component complexity. With fewer moving parts and wear points, the system is engineered to minimize long-term wear, improve reliability, and reduce maintenance costs throughout the life of the product. Customers currently using AWB Air Slide systems are encouraged to transition to the HDS platform for future replacement and service requirements. Fontaine will continue to support existing AWB installations by making replacement parts available “for the foreseeable future.” Visit www.fifthwheel.com for more information.

cycles, according to the manufacturer. RX3 incorporates comprehensive thermal protection, integrating an over-temperature switch and electric heat sensor designed to safeguard the drive during the toughest unloading cycles. By monitoring system temperature and reacting before damage can occur, RX3 helps prevent heat-related failures and protects critical hydraulic and mechanical components, reducing the risk of unplanned downtime. The RX3 hydraulic circuit is designed to run cleaner, featuring an oil pressure filter that promotes cleaner oil and monitored inlet conditions. This contributes to smoother performance, longer component life and a reduced maintenance burden over the life of the trailer, KEITH noted.

RX3 also reduces complexity with internal check valves and fewer parts, eliminating adjustments at the switching valve and minimizing potential leak points. The simplified layout makes field troubleshooting easier, speeds service and helps lower total maintenance costs for waste and recycling fleets. Smarter controls are a core part of RX3 Technology, pairing an automatic switching valve with electronic controls and optional manual control options. This control architecture enables more automated, hands-off operation, reduces operator error and simplifies training for new drivers and technicians. The hydraulic design also gives operators flexibility to unload at extremely slow or extremely fast speeds, depending on job requirements, providing precise control in tight facilities and rapid discharge when throughput is the priority.
