Next stop: Las Vegas

November is just around the corner, and with it comes one of our favorite opportunities to catch up with the industry.

I

t’s hard to believe we’re already heading into the final stretch of the year, and for us on the PTEN team, that means one thing: The AAPEX and SEMA shows are coming up! In November, we’ll be heading to Las Vegas to cover both shows and see what manufacturers have been working on this year. AAPEX and SEMA are always two of the biggest events on our calendar, especially when it comes to getting an early look at the tools, equipment, and technology that will be making their way into shops in the new year. Leading up to the shows, my inbox usually starts filling up with announcements about what companies are planning to debut. Some make updates to tools we already know, while others introduce something completely new. To me, though, there’s a big difference between reading about a product and actually getting to see it in action, ask questions, and talk with the people behind it. That’s one of the things I’m looking forward to most this year. So much of our communication with manufacturers happens through emails, phone

calls, and video interviews throughout the year, which makes getting to catch up with everyone in person one of my favorite parts of the shows. It also gives us a chance to hear about what’s happening beyond individual product launches. What are manufacturers hearing from technicians? What problems are they trying to solve with their newest tools? What technology is becoming more important in the bay? Those conversations help us get a better sense of what’s coming next and what it could mean for technicians. Of course, we’ll also be covering plenty of new products. The team will be walking both show floors, attending demonstrations, talking with manufacturers, shooting videos, and sharing what catches our attention throughout the week. We’ll also be recognizing this year’s PTEN Innovation Award winners during AAPEX, which is always a highlight for our team. If you’re heading to A APEX or SEMA in November, come find us and say hi! I always like hearing directly from our readers about what you’re seeing in the industry and what you want us to be covering.

2026 WINNERS INNOVATION AWARD WINNERS E

2026

very year since 1999, the PTEN Innovation Awards have featured the newest and most innovative products introduced to the automotive aftermarket, and this year is no different. For 2026, PTEN received more than 100 product entries in 27 categories. These same products, voted on by our panel of industry judges for the Innovation Awards, are also entered into PTEN’s People’s Choice Awards. This is our 12th year running the People’s Choice Awards, where we ask our readers to weigh in on which new products they think are the most innovative – and we had thousands of votes. Throughout the next several pages, you’ll find the winners for both PTEN’s Innovation Awards and People’s Choice Awards. In some cases, you’ll see that the readers’ votes matched the judges’ when deciding on a winner, and in others, you’ll see that the readers chose a different product to rise to the top. Congratulations to all our winners and thank you to our judges and everyone who showed up to vote.

Electrical system testing techniques Going back to the basics that solve most electrical problems that roll into your shop. By Scott Brown, Technical Editor

lectrical troubleshooting can be daunting, but when you understand how a circuit is designed, what each part is supposed to do, and why the system responds the way it does, you can break the circuit down and build your own test plan instead of leaning only on a trouble tree that may or may not lead you to a solution. In this article, I want to get back to the basics that still solve most of the electrical problems rolling into my shop: battery capacity under load, voltage-drop testing, shared sensor supply rails, and a practical crank/no-start example using a relay breakout tool.

30 PTEN

OCTOBER 2026

PTEN_30-39_DiagnosticTech.indd 30

WHY ELECTRICAL FUNDAMENTALS STILL MATTER Proper electrical testing gives technicians a clearer view of the fault the vehicle is presenting. Validating power to a device means confirming both the source voltage and the ground path. That device might be a module, actuator, relay, solenoid, sensor, switch, motor, or something else entirely.

www.VehicleServicePros.com

foundation. Measure resting voltage after the vehicle has sat, then watch voltage while cranking or while a known heavy load is commanded. A healthy system typically holds cranking voltage in a range the modules can tolerate. If voltage collapses hard, every other reading becomes suspect. Sensor supplies can brown out, relays can chatter, modules can reset, and communication can drop. Those look like complicated electrical failures when the real problem is a weak battery, a poor cable connection, or high resistance in the main power path on the positive or negative side. Also remember that a recently charged battery can mask a weak cell for a short time. If a vehicle arrives on a jump pack or after a long charge, recheck battery condition after a controlled discharge or after the vehicle has sat. Otherwise, you may validate circuits on a temporary voltage that will not be there on the next cold start. In fact, many of the faults we see today still stem back to the basics, and that begins with a sound electrical system that starts at the battery.

During vehicle design, engineers do not simply ask whether a device works; they also ask how it could fail, what the effect of that failure would be, and how the system should respond. That design process is Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, or FMEA. For those of us in the bay, the useful takeaway is simpler: a diagnostic trouble code or limp-home symptom is often the module’s planned response to a bad input, not the root cause itself. Substituted or default scantool values may look “normal” while the physical circuit does not. I have chased my share of those. Keep that in mind, then prove the circuit with meters, loads, and diagrams. The fundamentals below are what make that proof possible.

BATTERY FOUNDATION: VOLTAGE IS NOT CAPACITY Every electrical test plan in my shop starts at the battery. Resting voltage alone is not enough. A battery can show about 12.6V at rest and still collapse when a starter, fuel pump, cooling fan, or a pile of modules draw current. What matters under load is the battery’s ability to deliver current while holding voltage in a usable range. Shop language often calls this capacity, reserve capacity, or cold cranking amps (CCA). Whatever term the tester uses, the point is the same: open-circuit voltage does not equal the ability to support the circuit under load. Before chasing a “bad module” or “bad ground,” confirm the electrical www.VehicleServicePros.com

VOLTAGE-DROP TESTING UNDER LOAD Starting at the battery, a good solid test is to apply a load to a fully charged battery that equals 50 percent of the rated CCA using a tester like the one shown in Figure 1. Compare the loaded voltage after 15 seconds to the chart shown on the machine. Typically, you want to see more than 9.6V. Unloaded voltage will lie to you. Back-probing a connector with the circuit off, or with almost no current flowing, can show near-battery voltage even when the circuit cannot carry a real load. Voltage-drop testing answers a better question: how much voltage is being lost across a portion of the circuit while current is flowing? Test both sides of the path. On the power side, measure from battery posi-

publishes a spec. The diagnostic idea is consistent: if the device is starved on the feed side or lifted on the ground side while it is working, the device is not seeing the voltage the battery appears to offer. That is why a pump, fan, or lamp can look “powered” with a test light or an unloaded meter and still fail in service. One tester I rely on is the Load It from Joe’s Auto Electric (Figure 2). This tool lets you load a circuit quickly, which streamlines the work. Voltage-drop testing also keeps you honest about where to open the harness. If the drop is across a relay output, start there. If the drop is across a ground eyelet that serves several modules, you may explain multiple codes with one repair. If the drop only appears when the harness is moved, you have evidence of an intermittent high-resistance connection instead of a guessing game. Mastering these basics requires a solid foundation in basic electrical skills and Ohm’s Law, because those fundamentals remain critical even when the vehicle is full of modules and networks.

SENSOR SUPPLY RAILS: SHARED 5V AND COLLATERAL DAMAGE Many sensors do not run directly from battery voltage. The control module provides a regulated reference supply, commonly 5V, sometimes 3.3V or another rail depending on the design. That rail is a clean, limited supply used by one or more sensors so the module can interpret their signals against a known reference. The important detail is that rails are often shared. A throttle position sensor, accelerator pedal sensor, manifold pressure sensor, or other inputs may tap off the same 5V supply and sensor ground inside the module or within a harness splice. If one sensor develops an internal short from the 5V pin to ground, or if the 5V wire is pinched to ground, the rail voltage can collapse. Every sensor

on that rail may then read incorrectly at the same time. The scan tool can show a cluster of unlikely failures, and the temptation may be to start replacing parts, which technicians should always avoid. Again, the goal is to always test it out and prove the failure. Prove the rail circuit before you replace parts. Measure the 5V reference at the module connector and at the sensor connector with the circuit powered. If the rail is low everywhere, look for a shorted sensor or a grounded supply wire. A practical method I use is to watch the rail voltage while disconnecting sensors on that supply one at a time. If unplugging one sensor restores the rail, that sensor or its immediate wiring is pulling the supply down. If the rail stays low with the sensors disconnected, focus on the supply wire, splice, or the module itself. Also verify sensor ground. A poor sensor ground can shift every signal on that ground and create the appearance of multiple failed sensors. Compare sensor ground to battery negative with your DVOM in voltage measurement mode under operating conditions. What you see is voltage drop. On a working sensor ground, I usually expect a small reading, often under about 100 mV. A hard zero can mean you are not actually loading the circuit, not that the ground is perfect. If the voltage is high, then you generally have high resistance in the circuit under test, and you’ll need to chase it down. When a shared rail or shared sensor ground is the root cause, the repair is usually one connector, one shorted component, or one damaged wire, not a handful of unrelated sensors.

DIAGNOSTIC TECHNIQUES: CRANK, NO-START EXAMPLE A practical way to apply this thinking is a vehicle that has been towed in with a crank, no-start condition. The first goal is not to identify the failed part immediately. The first goal

is to gather information that separates the fault into a smaller system. Confirm that the engine cranks at normal speed, note warning lamps or security indicators, listen for the electric fuel pump during key-on or power-up, and do a quick visual inspection. Do not skip the visual inspection. Seemingly unrelated items can take you down a rabbit hole. Water intrusion in lighting or blind-spot modules can take down a network. Rodent damage, chewed wiring, disconnected intake ducting, damaged connectors, blown fuses, impact damage, or road debris near fuel and wiring harnesses can all create a crank, no-start. These observations keep you from chasing scan data while overlooking an obvious physical cause. Once the basics are gathered, start developing intelligence on the no-start. A gasoline engine needs the right airfuel mixture, ignition, compression, and timing. For a quick first split, ask: does the engine appear to be missing fuel, or does it appear to be missing ignition? That question prevents the diagnosis from spreading across every sensor, module, or wiring path. One fast way to assess a suspected fuel issue is to introduce a controlled external fuel source, such as propane, into the intake while cranking. If

34 PTEN

OCTOBER 2026

PTEN_30-39_DiagnosticTech.indd 34

the engine briefly fires or runs while

propane is metered in, the engine has enough spark, compression, and timing to support combustion, and the path should move toward fuel delivery. Perform this carefully with controlled f low, proper ventilation, and awareness of fire risk. Used correctly, it can also help a disabled vehicle run briefly enough to aid with vehicle movement. If the engine responds to added fuel, the next question is how the vehicle controls fuel delivery. In many applications, the in-tank fuel pump is a brushed DC motor inside a fuel pump module. The pump may be supplied by a relay, fuse, control module, or fuel pump driver depending on the design. Many systems still use a fuel pump relay for main pump power while the pump ground is tied to chassis ground. At this point, choose test points that give the most information with the least disassembly. Going straight to the fuel tank connector may seem logical, but on many vehicles that connector is harder to access than the relay, fuse, or fuel pump control point. A fuse loop, DVOM, and current probe can place you on the working side of the circuit without disturbing the tank. Better yet, if the control relay is accessible, determine whether main power is available,

whether the relay is being commanded, whether voltage is leaving the relay, and whether current is flowing through the pump circuit. Looking closely at the diagram from a 2022 Honda Civic (Figure 3), we can see who does what and where the failure points potentially are. A relay breakout device (Figure 4) is especially useful because it separates the circuit into testable sections. You can verify the load-side power feed, see whether the relay control side is being commanded, and manually close the load side when appropriate. Some breakout tools include LEDs or an audible indicator to show circuit activity. If battery voltage is available at the relay and the relay is commanded, but the pump does not run, the next question is whether current is flowing to the pump. No current flow may point toward an open circuit, poor connection, or an open pump motor. Excessive current or a fuse that opens may point toward a shorted pump, damaged wiring, or an overloaded circuit. If the relay is never commanded, move to the control side of the relay, module command, crank signal, security status, or other enabling conditions. Looking back at Figure 3, let’s break down the relay pins in our example diagram:

• Main Device Power Supply • Relay Main Power Out • Positive Relay Control Feed • Negative Relay Control (switching circuit) Most relays follow DIN 72552: • 30: Main Device Power Supply • 87: Relay Main Power Out • 85: Positive Relay Control Feed • 86: Negative Relay Control (switching circuit) Now keep in mind that you should always reference the wiring diagram for the vehicle under test. Some manufacturers control the relay by switching the high side or the low side of pins 85 and 86. Additionally, I have seen pins 30 and 87 switched. This is where a breakout device with colored LEDs can help sort this out. With the breakout device shown in Figure 4, confirm main power at the

relay with a DVOM connected to the proper 4 mm banana jack, then use the breakout tool to interrogate the load side of the circuit through the two-way switch on the side of the device. Pushing the switch up engages the bi-colored LED to provide information as to which terminal has power for the relay to deliver to the device. A red LED indicates that pin 30 is the feed, and a green LED indicates that pin 87 is the feed. If the light does not come on, then we are either missing power or have an open circuit on the load side. You can also momentarily energize the pump side of the circuit and evaluate circuit connectivity through the load to ground. If the tool indicates power is present, but the pump does not respond, suspect excessive resistance, an open in the working side of the circuit, a poor ground path, or a failed pump motor. If the tool has an audible function, it can be used while gently moving harnesses, tapping the fuel tank,

or lightly disturbing suspect areas to expose an intermittent connection. The tool shown in Figure 4 has such a feature; check out the user manual for more details. The purpose is not to force the circuit to work, but to watch for a reaction that points to where the circuit is losing integrity. This approach keeps the diagnosis organized. You are not testing randomly; each test is designed to answer a question. Is the battery able to support the load? Is voltage being lost across the power or ground path? Is a shared sensor rail collapsed? Is the engine capable of running on an added fuel source? Is the fuel pump being powered? Is the relay being commanded? Is the pump circuit carrying current? Is the ground path able to support the load? By answering these questions in order, you build a diagnostic path from symptom to system to circuit to component.

CLOSING THOUGHTS Before you replace the next sensor or module, run through the basics: • Confirm battery condition under load, not just resting voltage. • Voltage-drop test power and ground while the circuit is working. • Measure shared sensor rails (often 5V) and watch for one shorted sensor pulling the rail down. • Separate protective module strategy and substituted data from the physical fault. • Use the diagram, choose accessible test points, and let each measurement answer one clear question. Electrical diagnosis gets easier when the fundamentals come first. Capacity, voltage drop, and reference rails explain a large share of the weird electrical failures that otherwise turn into a partscannon exercise. These skills will pay off as vehicles continue to get more complex, because the basics still get you to the root of the problem.

Safety equipment and personal gear: Don’t be the next story It’s easy to become blind to the hazards you work around every day, but that complacency could have disastrous results. By Keith Perkins, Contributing Editor

afety in an automotive shop is one of those subjects everyone knows is important, but it is incredibly easy to become blind to the hazards we work around every day. We spend so much time around lifts, grinders, presses, chemicals, batteries, electrical equipment, compressed air, tools, and vehicles that things which might immediately concern someone walking into the shop for the first time can start looking completely normal to us. Something does not have to be safe to become normal. We just have to walk past it enough times.

MAKE SAFETY ACCESSIBLE One of the easiest ways I have found to encourage the use of personal protective equipment is simply putting it where people need it. At the entrance to our shop, we keep safety glasses readily available. You do not have to hunt through a toolbox or walk across the building to find a pair. If you are walking into the shop, the glasses

TOOLS MENTIONED • TOOLS MENTIONED: • SAFETY GLASSES • FACE SHIELDS • GLOVES • PARTS RACK • NON-SOLVENT PARTS WASHER • RUBBER INSULATING GLOVES • LOCKOUT AND TAGOUT EQUIPMENT • SNAP-ON TORQUE TESTER, NO. QCDTC3250 are right there. It is a simple thing, but sometimes the difference between using safety equipment and not using it is whether it is within reach. We take the same approach with specific pieces of equipment. We have a face shield located next to our grinder because that is where you are going to need it. We also keep a face shield next to our arbor press. An arbor press may not immediately come to mind when

people think about eye and face protection, but you are applying a tremendous amount of force to parts and tooling. Things can break, slip, or come apart. Having the face shield right there removes the excuse of not knowing where one is or deciding that the job will only take a few seconds. We also keep gloves attached to every lift. Again, this is not complicated. If you want people to wear gloves, put gloves where the work happens. Personal protective equipment sitting in a cabinet on the opposite side of the building technically exists, but that does not necessarily mean someone is going to use it. I would rather spend a little extra money making PPE convenient than find out after someone gets hurt that the equipment they needed was somewhere else in the shop.

KEEP IT CLEAN Housekeeping is another part of safety that gets overlooked. Anytime parts are removed from a vehicle in our shop, they never go on the floor. They go on a rack, cart, or another designated location. That keeps the parts accounted for, helps prevent damage, and keeps them from becoming a trip hazard. The same

thinking applies to cords, hoses, tools, and equipment around the vehicle. You do not need your shop to look like an operating room, but there should be some thought behind where things are placed. Chemical handling deserves the same consideration. In our shop, we use a non-solvent-based parts washer. There are plenty of reasons to think carefully about the chemicals and cleaning products we bring into a shop. Sometimes the best way to reduce a hazard is to look at whether there is a different product or process that will accomplish what you need without introducing the same risk. That does not eliminate the need to follow the instructions and safety information for whatever product you are using, but reducing unnecessary hazards is a good place to start.

HIGH VOLTAGE SAFETY Since we do quite a bit of hybrid battery work, we also think seriously about where potentially hazardous battery components are stored. We try to keep hazardous battery internals, particularly lithium battery components and other alternative battery materials, outside of the main shop whenever practical. We have a 20’ shipping container in a gravel area physically separated from the building. If we ever experience a catastrophic battery failure, having those materials away from the occupied shop helps reduce the potential for injury and property loss. I am not suggesting that every shop needs to buy a shipping container. The point is to think about what happens if the worst reasonable situation actually occurs. We have all seen stories involving battery fires and thermal events, and

42 PTEN

OCTOBER 2026

it is easy to think it cannot happen in our shop. Every shop where something catastrophic has happened probably thought the same thing beforehand. Plan for the problem before you have the problem. High-voltage vehicle work also requires specialized PPE. When I’m training, I showcase a set of expired rubber insulating gloves. I keep them because they are a good visual example of something that should not be trusted simply because it is sitting on the shelf and looks like the correct equipment. OSHA requires rubber insulating gloves to be inspected for damage before each day’s use, including an air test. Once issued for service, they must also be electrically tested every six months. Gloves can require testing sooner if their insulating value is questionable, after repair, or under other conditions. The date on the glove is

therefore only part of the story. You need to know its condition and testing status before trusting it with your life.

LIFT SAFETY Lifts are another area where I think familiarity can create complacency.

We put thousands of pounds into the air and then stand underneath them every day. I photographed the lift pads in our shop specifically because they are in good condition. That is what we want to see. Look at the pads. Look at the lift arms. Look at the locks and the

components you interact with every day. If something is damaged, worn, leaking, moving differently, or just does not look right — deal with it. Having a lift professionally inspected annually does not mean we ignore it for the other 364 days. An annual inspection should be one part of an ongoing process. The people using the equipment every day are in the best position to notice when something has changed.

LOCKOUT AND TAGOUT EQUIPMENT The same philosophy is why we have lockout and tagout equipment available. If a piece of equipment is unsafe, there should never be confusion about whether somebody should use it. Whenever practical, get unsafe equipment out of the work area. When that is not practical, it needs to be clearly taken out of service using appropriate procedures. A tag sitting in a drawer does not protect anybody. It has to be available, and more importantly, it has to be used.

 If equipment is unsafe to use and you can't remove it from the shop, use a lockout tag so everyone knows not to use it.

SAFETY SHOULD EXTEND TO YOUR CUSTOMERS TOO Safety also extends beyond protecting the technicians working in the building. We have a Snap-on Torque Tester, No. QCDTC3250, bolted in our shop that we use to check our torque wrenches monthly. We still send our torque wrenches out annually to a qualified testing facility, but I do not want to wait an entire year to find out that something has changed. Testing once a month gives us another opportunity to catch a problem between those annual inspections. A torque wrench that is significantly inaccurate is not only a concern for the technician using it. It can become a safety issue for the person driving the vehicle after it leaves our shop. Wheel fasteners, brake components, suspension components, and plenty of other

 Don't wait until the last minute to test your equipment, using something like a torque wrench tester in your shop regularly could help you find problems sooner.

DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT’S TOO LATE That torque tester represents something I think is important about safety in general. There is a big difference between meeting an interval and actually paying attention to the condition of your equipment. If something can be checked reasonably and regularly, why wait until the last possible day to find out there is a problem? I have worked in places where there was always the possibility that somebody could get seriously hurt, and one thing I never wanted to do was make

the phone call telling someone’s family that an injury had occurred. You never want to explain that someone lost an eye because you did not provide a six-dollar pair of safety glasses. You do not want

Pick a day this month and walk around your shop specifically looking for safety problems. Take pictures and video. Look at your grinders, presses, lifts, lift pads, chemicals, PPE, electrical equipment, torque wrenches, battery storage, cords, walkways, and everything else you normally walk past without thinking about it. Better yet, ask another shop owner you trust to walk through your facility and then return the favor at theirs. CHAOS Moto Pry Bar Grip

Reviewed by Matt Fanslow, diagnostic tech/shop manager at Riverside Automotive in Red Wing, Minnesota.

Q: How did the tool/equipment function as far as saving you time? A: Because of the nature of the pry bars we’ve been using on these machines for decades — flat, relatively small in circumference, and slippery — it’s easier to drop the bar. The grip pretty much eliminates that. You can also move more quickly and assuredly. Does it save minutes per wheel or job? Maybe. Maybe it’s seconds. But over the course of years and years, it saves time, which then increases income. You also greatly reduce the chances of slipping that damages the rim. Rim replacement is costly, and if we damage a rim, we’re buying a rim.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The CHAOS Moto Grip is designed to slide onto steel pry bars and levers, giving users a secure, cushioned hold on what is otherwise bare steel. The grip helps reduce slips, protecting the user’s hands and the wheels they work on. Made in the USA. For more information, visit VehicleServicePros.com/55407605

Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product? A: You slide the little end into the big end, just like the airline seatbelt in “Tommy Boy”. Q: How easy was it to use? A: It’s like using a pry bar, only it has better grip. Q: What features did you like? A: It legitimately makes using the pry bar easier to use. I slid the grip on and used it and was thinking, “Why isn’t this standard equipment?” Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for? A: Mostly tire dismounting and mounting. Q: Have you used a previous version of this tool? If so, what are some new features compared to the old version? A: I can’t say that I have. Most tire machine pry bars are pretty bare. Q: Is there anything you had questions or concerns about in regard to the tool? A: Not directly to the manufacturer of this tool accessory, but more: “Why isn’t this standard?”

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why? A: I would rate this a 10. It absolutely makes a positive impact on the use of a tool that gets used multiple times per day, and it has shown zero wear.

Olight ArkPro and ArkPro Ultra

Reviewed by Pete Rudloff, technician at Pete's Garage in Bear, DE. Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability? A: It is three lights and a laser pointer in all in one small package with a very powerful light. If that’s not enough it has a UV setting that’s great for A/C and oil leaks. Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The ArkPro Series Flat Unibody EDC Flashlight from Olight combines 1700 lm of Pure Flood, 800 lm of spotlight, 365nm UV light, and green beam in one flashlight. The UV light features both low and high power modes to reveal stains, detect leaks, and create glowing effects. The four lights can be used separately, and the green beam can be used together with any of the three light sources to achieve seven combinations. Made from Olight's O-aluminum. The LED flashlight works with a magnetic USB charging cable or USB-C cables. When fully charged, it can provide up to 14 days of continuous use on moonlight mode. For more information, visit VehicleServicePros.com/55374020

A: Minimal set up was involved. You open the box, charge the light and it’s ready to use. It’s important to note that the light wont work until after it has charged up a little bit. Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories? A: The ArkPro is packaged in a quality, conventional cardboard box, not really noteworthy. The ArkPro Ultra, on the other hand, comes in a high-end box, also cardboard, I think, but really stiff and feels almost like wood. Plus, it has a slide off lid that makes opening the box for the first time reminiscent of opening jewelry. The ArkPro Ultra box is downright attractive. Q: Was there a manual included? If so, did you use the manual, and was the manual easy to understand? A: No manual was included, but a simple instruction sheet was, and that was more than adequate. Q: What features did you like? A: Multiple beam types aren’t a new concept, but the ArkPro breaks new ground with the simplicity of its layout, the multiple bulbs, and how easy it is to use the different light types. Having multiple beam intensity options that are super easy to switch through is great.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for? A: It would be easier to list what I wouldn’t use this light for. Multiple times a day, I pull an inspection light from my pocket to shine light on something. Now that I have the ArkPro Ultra, I’ll be shining a better light on everything! Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it? A: I’ve used flashlights and inspection lights for more than 30 years in the auto trade, and the rectangular shape is a game changer. The magnetic charging port is great, and having a UV light is incredible. Previously, any time I needed a UV light, it would take me 20 minutes to find one. Now, it’s always in my pocket. The light also has a substantial feel to it. It’s not heavy, but it feels rugged, not cheap.

MAHLE Multi-Use Lift Table XL

Reviewed by Brin Kline, owner and diagnostic technician at Assured Auto Works in Melbourne, FL. Q: How did the tool/equipment function as far as saving you time? A: Using this table allowed us to remove the transmission with the transfer case on an application that requires diving the front of the transmission under the engine during removal due to a crossmember that cannot be removed. Doing this job without the table may be possible, but having the table for this job gave us way more confidence in stability during the removal and installation process. That confidence allowed us to get the job completed faster.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION The ShopPRO MLT-2200 Multi-

Use Lift Table XL from MAHLE Service Solutions is designed to help technicians safely handle large, heavy components around the shop. The lift table features a 2,200-lb. capacity and an air-overhydraulic lifting system to help reduce physical strain when lifting and positioning components. A large work surface, adjustable fixtures, locking swivel casters, and a folding handle provide added versatility and maneuverability. The table also includes integrated tool storage, controlled lowering, and ratchet straps to help keep components secure during service. For more information, visit VehicleServicePros.com/55407681

Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability? A: Saving time on the job impacted our shop’s profitability in a positive way. It also reduces the risks of personal injury or property damage. Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product? A: The table was already assembled. All we had to do was use our forklift to get the table off of the pallet that it was shipped on and install the handle. Q: How easy was it to use? A: The table is easy to use; it does exactly what it is meant to do, and it does it well. Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories? A: This is a large and heavy piece of equipment. It was shipped in cardboard boxes on a crate. We used a forklift to unload it from the truck it came on. Q: What features did you like? A: I like that the tabletop has threaded holes for mounting the different accessories needed for each job, that the table operates on air alone and there’s no need for an electrical cord or extension cords, that there are adjustable anchor points along the side of the table, that all four wheels are large, heavy duty lockable casters, and that the rate at which the table lowers is adjustable.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for? A: We used this table to remove a 10-speed automatic transmission and transfer case from a four-wheel drive 2017 Ford F-150 during a rear main seal and oil pan reseal. Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it? A: This is the first time that we’ve used a lift table. In the past, we would use a telescoping transmission jack and screw jacks to remove powertrains, drivetrains, and subframes. Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why? A: I would give this table a 10. The design, functions, and features are impressive. BIG TIME BOXES There’s a light that shines in every drawer, in the hutch, and in the lockers. Although his favorite part of the setup is the hutch. “That’s where I have my computer," Reiser says. "I do all my work in there. It’s the most organized.”

s a kid, Robert Reiser would go to work with his father and watch him fix cars in awe. Despite his fascination with cars and repairing them, Reiser wasn’t always sure that becoming a technician was the path for him. In fact, he was prepared to take on separate work, but when his father got sick, things changed. “I was going to do something else, then he got sick, and I ended up staying local,” Reiser says. “I got a job at a tire shop when I was like 16 or 17, and I’ve been doing it ever since.” Now, head technician of American Tire and Auto Care in Flemington, New Jersey, Reiser has had a handful of toolboxes throughout his career, but none shine brighter than his current setup: an 84” Snap-on EPIQ.

MORE SPACE AND MORE LIGHT Before purchasing the EPIQ , Reiser was operating out of a box that offered him a good bit of space, but he needed

Shop: American Tire and Auto Care Location: Flemington, NJ more. That’s where the EPIQ came in. With deeper drawers and more space, it was a natural progression for Reiser. With two little ones at home, Reiser had to be intentional with how he grew his setup. Over time, he purchased a number of additions to the original box. Three years ago, he acquired the hutch, a year later the two lockers, and six months after that the two upper cabinets rounded it all out. Each new addition is the same crisp white color as the one before. “I have side cabinets, like small boxes, that are white next to it,” Reiser says. “I really like the white because when customers come in the shop, they say how clean it is. It’s just a very nice look.” Aside from the additional space the box brought him, Reiser was drawn to the EPIQ’s array of light fixtures.

ORGANIZE TO KEEP THE FLOW Keeping a toolbox organized can be difficult, but Reiser keeps his drawers in shape by having a specific place for each type of tool. “The top couple of drawers I have sockets and stuff like that,” he explains. “Wrenches, pliers, and my screwdrivers and picks are in my hutch so they’re easy to get to. I keep all the stuff that I use commonly in the big drawers that are easy to get to.” The lockers house his specialty tools for testing and timing. Meanwhile, bigger equipment like fans and cooling tools are kept above the lockers. Since he doesn’t use these tools as frequently, he finds it’s best to keep them more out of the way. To help his workspace stay relatively tidy and keep track of tools while performing repairs, Reiser uses a roll cart. PRIDE IN HIS SETUP After putting time and effort into his setup, Reiser rightfully has a lot of pride in how it’s turned out. “My toolbox is gorgeous,” Reiser says. “I love it.” When he can find time between managing his work and his job as a father, Reiser plans to add two new drawers. It’s a relatively small addition, but Reiser will make the most of it. Want to see more photos of Reiser's box? Visit: VehicleServicePros.com/55407240 Want to show off YOUR Big-Time Box?
