The sales professional
Be intentional about how you approach your customers to ensure you’re not wasting their time or your own.
The world of mobile tool selling is much different than many other sales careers. To start, you go to your customers instead of the other way around. You have face-to-face conversations with many of them. Because you’re entering their space, you also have to be cognizant of causing as little distraction to them as possible. Your customers have work they need to do just like you, so make sure you’re presenting yourself as a sales professional.
1. STAY ON TOPIC
As Alan Sipe mentions in this month’s Go Sell Something article (Pg. 44), if you stop by a shop and start talking about the weather, the score from last night’s game, this funny thing your cat did, etc., etc. … none of these conversations will help you sell any tools. Your customers’ time to visit your truck or chat with you is limited, so be sure to make the most of it. Ask them if there’s anything they need, tell them about the newest tool/s on your truck, and follow up on any questions they may have had on your last visit.
2. STOCK RELEVANT INVENTORY
This month’s featured Tales from the Road (Pg. 50) distributor, Troy MacRae, makes sure he stocks the tools his
customers need, and that allows him to best take care of them.
“I shop and buy the inventory that allows me to be consistent with inventory levels on the truck with those items,” MacRae says, “but more importantly, the ones that offer warranties. You gotta figure they’re gonna break the tool at one time or another.”
He also makes sure to stock the “trendy” products for his customers. On MacRae’s truck, the Milwaukee Tool products are a favorite.
“Milwaukee is hotter than ever,” MacRae explains. “I have enough inventory to fill the pipeline to keep the customers so they don’t go to the box stores or buy online.”
3. DEMO THE TECHNICAL PRODUCTS
Not every tool is as simple to understand as a hammer. Some require a bit more of an explanation. In our cover story (Pg. 30) this month, we talk about J2534. Independent distributor Jared Charlesworth always has a diagnostic tool turned on for his customers to interact with. By allowing them to play with the tool before purchasing it, they’re able to decide if it’s a good fit for them and their shop. These are just a few ways you can show up as a professional for your customers. What does being a professional distributor look like for you?

JohnDow Industries
Vehicle Fire Blanket
JohnDow Industries’ Vehicle Fire Blanket enables you to suppress electric, hybrid, and internal combustion engine vehicle fire flames and fumes. Lithiumion battery fires are very difficult to extinguish and traditional fire repellents do not work due to thermal runaway. When an EV experiences thermal runaway, the battery self-generates heat until it reaches its limit or experiences a catastrophic failure like a fire. This fire blanket is the most efficient way to isolate an EV fire. The fire blanket’s high temperature-resistant material prevents fire from spreading and damaging surrounding vehicles and property while minimizing potential combustion and the fire’s temperature.

STAHLWILLE Open/Box End Combination Wrench
STAHLWILLE’s combination wrenches are available in a range of imperial and metric sizes.
APPLICATION
Combination wrenches like the Open/Box End Combination Wrench, No. 40081313, from STAHLWILLE combine the benefits of box wrenches and open-end wrenches. One side is a closed loop for hexagonal or square nuts, and the other end is an open U-shape. Used most often for difficult nuts, a combination wrench’s closed-end loosens the nut so the open end can unscrew it quickly.
ORIGIN
The first combination wrench dates to the 1800s. The idea was to create a versatile wrench with an open-end and boxed-end combination to remove bolts and nuts from a wide variety of applications.
To watch a video demonstration of this product, visit: VehicleServicePros.com/55126021
SELLING POINTS
When force is applied to a wrench, the greatest force acts on the area between the jaw and the shank, which is why STAHLWILLE wrenches are reinforced at this point. The special design makes the load zones more resilient, which reduces the risk of breakage to a minimum.
Extremely thin-walled rings facilitate work in confined spaces. In addition, the rings are higher than standard nuts, which prevents the wrench from seizing on the nut.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS
The thumb groove along the wrench handle eliminates material without stress and concentrates it where needed. Similar to the principle of an H-beam in construction, extreme loadbearing capacity and maximum flexural strength are achieved with a lower weight.
The Anti-Slip-Drive profile enables high-force transmission without damaging the fasteners. While the force acts on the flats of the screws, the corners are left free and are not rounded off. Thanks to the forged double hex, they are tougher than any fastener.
MANUFACTURING SPECS
• Made in Germany using a special manufacturing process that allows for thin-walled rings that are perfect for screwing in hardto-reach places
• Extremely resilient and durable, stronger than any screw
• High-quality, non-slip surface texture for safe working even with oily hands
• Robust chrome-alloy steel gives the combination wrench high durability and wear resistance

A TOOL FOR the modern auto shop
J2534 devices are essential tools for automotive technicians – help your customers find what they need.
By Elli Carder, Assistant Editor
The world of automotive diagnostic tools can be somewhat tricky to navigate. With seemingly endless functions, features, and capabilities, it’s best to take things one at a time. If you don’t have much experience with J2534 reprogramming tools, have no fear! Industry experts and independent distributor Jared Charlesworth are here to help.
UNDERSTANDING J2534
In any auto repair shop, whether it’s an independent shop or a dealership, technicians must be equipped with not only the proper tools to fix a vehicle’s problems but also ones that help identify them. According to Maurice Miller, director of technical support at Autel, J2534 tools are an essential part of any modern automotive shop.
J2534 is an interface standard designed by the Society of Automotive Engineers and mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for electronic control unit (ECU) reprogramming, describes Steven Haney, territory sales manager for Bosch Automotive. Haney continues to explain that a J2534 device is used for reading and clearing diagnostic trouble codes, programming correct
module data into blank modules, and adapting control modules after part replacements.
“[J2534] originally started as a tool to just reflash the ECUs within the car,” says Mark Wine, Opus IVS. “It morphed into also being able to run diagnostics. Basically, the computer runs the diagnostics, and it uses the tool to collect and send information to the vehicle.”
These tools are designed to go between a computer and a car, making a bridge with the diagnostic connector and translating computer jargon to the vehicle.
“Their ability to reprogram control modules within a vehicle [ensures] vehicles run with the latest software updates,” Miller explains. This function gave the tool its alternative name of a Pass-Thru device.
UPDATES AND ADVANCEMENTS
Reprogramming has become commonplace in almost every aspect of vehicle repair and maintenance.
“The biggest change and the hardest one to accept is that the only way for some vehicle issues to be repaired or ‘fixed’ is by reprogramming,” says Haney. “Today, even things as simple as a wheel alignment require reprogramming. With all the ‘driver assist’ systems, many services just cannot be done without J2534 capability.”
Improvements in software and firmware updates have enhanced the speed and reliability of reprogramming
processes, Haney explains, ultimately reducing downtime in shops. Haney notes that over the last few years, there has been an expansion of supported vehicle models and manufacturers, giving technicians a broader range of applications.
SELLING THE TOOL
Around 20 years ago, independent distributor Jared Charlesworth started his career in the mobile tool distribution business. Currently, his route is in Columbia Falls, Montana, where he visits mostly independent shops and dealerships, with a few agricultural and heavy duty locations in the mix.
Though technicians don’t always seek out the J2534 feature specifically, when they find that the diagnostic tool has that ability, it opens doors for them.
“When shops adopt J2534 tools, they benefit from the ability to perform a wider range of diagnostic and reprogramming tasks in-house, reducing the need for outsourcing,” Miller says. “By offering [these] services, these shops can set themselves apart based on their ability to handle dealer level services in-house.”
For Charlesworth, selling J2534 reprogramming tools is like clockwork. His technicians ask for the tools almost weekly, with a sale being made nearly every month.
“I’ve been approached more so lately about having it,” Charlesworth says. “It’s started to take hold, I think, a little bit more in the independent shops.”
It helps that Charlesworth keeps a diagnostic tool turned on at the front of his truck so customers can interact with it and familiarize themselves with its capabilities. Demonstrations are more centered on the technician, giving them hands-on experience with the tool.
“As far as demonstrating the product’s value, I’d recommend letting the technician try it out for themselves,” says Haney. “Distributors might consider directing the customer through a routine software update or diagnostic reading or even allowing the [technician] to test the product on a trial basis within their own shop.”
Not only can having these Pass-Thru devices in their shops set a technician apart from the rest, but it can also save them money. A J2534 device allows shops to expand their coverage to different vehicle models without the need to invest in OE tools, explains Wine.
PREPARING YOUR CUSTOMERS (AND YOURSELF)
As Alan Sipe discussed in September’s Go Sell Something article, not having an automotive background doesn’t have to hold you back.
Don't be afraid to ask for help, your techs can teach you too.
“I didn’t grow up in the automotive industry,” Charlesworth says. “When it came to tools, I learned most of my stuff from my customers. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.”
You don’t need to know how to operate the tool, but you should understand its abilities and benefits to sell it to your customers. While the training a technician does isn’t necessary for a distributor, it is valuable to educate yourself
on these tools. To stay up-to-date, Charlesworth utilizes YouTube videos and the knowledge of his customer base.
Over the years, he has cultivated strong relationships with his technicians where they feel comfortable coming to him with their questions, and they can in turn share their knowledge with him. This symbiotic relationship makes the sale just that much easier and helps Charlesworth with future customer interactions.
“I have a couple technicians that I’ve built relationships with over the years that if I have somebody asking questions about programming or whatever it may be, I send them that direction,” Charlesworth says. “I’ve always cut them a better deal on a tool, or I set them up with something where it [becomes] an incentive for them to help me teach these new technicians.”
One way to get to know your customers is to ask them questions. Get to know their shop’s needs and any potential concerns they might have when purchasing these tools. Autel’s Miller suggests asking customers about the types of vehicles their shop services, as well as the diagnostic services they regularly perform.
Jump Starting Made Easy
Opus IVS's
“There are [other] things to consider as well, [like] does the shop have good and stable internet? They will need a decent laptop PC that meets the OE requirements,” explains Bosch’s Haney.
J2534 devices often require the user to be tech savvy, says Wine, with different vehicles requiring different applications depending on the OE. Charlesworth keeps
informational flyers on his truck to hand to customers and recommends other training sources like the Autel Academy for more tool-specific information. You can recommend workshops, seminars, and online tutorials to your customers to help them gain practical experience on these tools.
STOCKING YOUR TRUCK
When deciding what reprogramming tools to keep on his truck, Charlesworth likes to go to his technicians for their input. Understanding your customers’ needs will help you make informed decisions on the best inventory options for your business.
If you’re new to J2534 and need somewhere to start, or maybe you’re just looking to add more of these tools to your truck, Autel, Bosch, Opus IVS, and many other companies have an extensive selection to choose from when it comes to J2534 devices.
Autel offers a wide range of tools that perform J2534 reprogramming, but according to Miller, the XLink stands out amongst their lineup based on its ability to utilize Remote Expert in case a technician requires OEM software that is not easily obtainable or is cost prohibitive. This is a good option for shops that don’t have access to, or maybe don’t possess the budget for, certain OE-specific applications.
Another option to consider is Bosch’s Mastertech II J2534 VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface), which is fully validated for performing reflashing and diagnostic services on the top six OEM reprogramming applications: GM, Ford, FCA, Nissan/Infinity, Honda/Accura, and Toyota/Lexus. This tool is designed to be compatible with future OE communications requirements, explains Haney, and can work well for small or independent shops, giving them a broader scope of OEM applications and cutting back costs.
Additionally, Opus IVS has several J2534 devices available, from tools with access to many OEM applications to OE-specific ones. The CARDAQ-Plus 3 is their premier J2534 device, says Wine. This tool gives users access to OEM key codes, PIN numbers, and immobilizer reset information. With the Toolbox3 feature, which provides the technician with OEM application ions and educational video tutorials, this becomes a good choice for the technician who might not have the most experience with J2534 devices.
Stocking your truck with these tools doesn’t have to be hard, and with these three options to start, you’ll be more than prepared to hit the road. Try your best to stay up to date on the ever-changing world of reprogramming so that when customers ask about these tools, you’ll be ready to help them.

Tesla service, repair, and diagnostics
Stay up-to-date on how to maintain your customers’ Tesla vehicles.
By Scott Brown, Technical Editor
Although you may already provide service on Teslas, this article could reveal information you may not be completely aware of. Since Teslas fall into the “Software Defined Vehicle” (SDV) category, changes are continuously added to not only enhance the driver experience, correct for bugs and other issues, but are also rolling out changes to enhance the service technician’s experience as well. I now own two Tesla vehicles and over the past five-plus years I have witnessed many interesting changes that have allowed for better diagnostics and a way for those interested in learning more about how these machines work to learn more through the highly informational graphics displayed on the center screen when in service mode and the theory of operation data now made available within service information via subscription.
In this article, you will find plenty of graphics, explanations, and several use cases that I believe you will find to
be highly informative. We will also cover how one can now access the vehicle remotely to triage and analyze vehicle problems before the vehicle arrives for service. I will also share an interesting case study where I was able to support a colleague with a shop in Central California in addressing a high-voltage battery problem on a 12-year-old Model S.
The role of automotive service technicians is evolving. With the advanced tools built into vehicles, such as those found on Teslas, you can experience the vehicles of the future today. The aftermarket service of Tesla vehicles poses unique challenges and opportunities, requiring a specialized understanding of Tesla’s proprietary systems such as Toolbox, Garage, Periscope, and service information. This article aims to provide professional automotive service technicians with a detailed overview of Tesla Service, highlighting recent access developments and how they can leverage Tesla’s service tools.
Figure 1 – Tesla Service Mode alerts and warnings Photo courtesy of Scott Brown
SERVICE MODE & SERVICE MODE PLUS
Going back about four to five years ago the aftermarket had no access to service mode or service mode plus unless you were a certified collision center. Today, anyone can engage service mode through a couple of key presses on the screen. When accessing the software page and long pressing on the model’s name of the vehicle for approximately five seconds, a password entry box should appear, and entering the word service will allow you to engage in service mode. A disclaimer screen will appear letting you know that you could get yourself in trouble if you don’t know what you are doing. So, you should be cautious until you are highly fluent with Tesla vehicles.
On this first page, the first thing that I recommend doing is looking at the service alerts. This provides a list of alerts and warnings that may be useful when addressing vehicle problems or complaints. But beware, researching this information should be carried out before engaging in any level of diagnostics because I have seen several alerts and warnings for items that are known issues and that may be corrected sometime down the road through software updates. Additionally, the alerts shown either on the in-car display or in Toolbox may have an additional payload of cracked data that might be useful to the service technician (Figure 1). For example, APP_w303_imuIrational on my 2018 Model 3 equipped with a hardware 3 car computer indicates that there is a rationality error between the accelerometer or IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) located in the restraints control module and the IMU located inside of the car computer a.k.a. Autopilot computer. This is one
example of a known issue that is supposed to be corrected with future software updates according to what Tesla shared with me during a service visit to address this alert. However, I have discovered something unusual on this vehicle that may be related to this IMU anomaly which I will share more about later in this article. There is another known false positive and that has to do with an indicated voltage drop: VCFRONT_a059_inputResistanceHigh. Reviewing service documents on the Tesla service information website can sometimes reveal these known issues, and sometimes, a Google search may reveal actual vehicle owner experiences and what Tesla service advised on such anomalies. Today’s technicians need to be highly resourceful and in doing so may save valuable time and effort. However, there are cases where you will not be able to look up certain fault codes unless you are using Tesla’s Toolbox 3.0 software where a lot of useful diagnostic information can be found.
TESLA TOOLBOX 3.0 SOFTWARE
Tesla Toolbox is a diagnostic and repair software offered by Tesla to access additional service information within the vehicle and from within the online application. The software runs in a web browser (preferably Chrome) where the computer is connected to an ethernet diagnostic port located under the dash near the driver’s kick panel. Service information will provide settings that will need to be set up with your network connection on your laptop or computer and specific settings that the browser needs to have. Essentially, you’ll need to assign a specific IP address to your network interface card and turn off all the security-related
Figure 2 – Tesla Service Mode Plus CAN Diag

DIAGNOSTIC TECH
settings within the browser. Some of the earlier cars require specific connectors, however, for 2022 and later cars, the standard RJ45 cable connection is all you need to connect. When you connect the vehicle with Toolbox, the vehicle is automatically placed into Service Mode Plus. Service Mode Plus provides additional diagnostic access through the display screen found in the vehicle, so let’s review a few of those differences.
High voltage battery page
On this page, you will see more options to perform various routines such as discharging the battery, clearing contactor problems, and other operations. Additionally, there are a couple of relearns for the calculated amperehour charge and state of charge levels. You’ll need to review service information and obtain additional training to understand why one would need to execute these changes. And later in this article, I will share a case study where we performed these operations and were able to successfully enable a vehicle that had learned incorrect cell balancing values. Here’s a note about resetting the high voltage battery management system calculated ampere-hour capacity. “Resetting the calculated ampere-hour capacity may cause the vehicle to prematurely enter graceful power-off mode at a displayed percentage or mileage above zero. It is important to inform the customer not to
drive the vehicle below the 20 percent displayed range for the next eight weeks following a calculated ampere-hour capacity reset. This routine resets all the high voltage battery brick calculated amp hour capacities to the nominal/ default values. During normal operation, the high voltage battery management system calculates brick-calculated amp hour capacities over multiple charge/ discharge cycles. In the event of a large, accumulated error, this routine can reset the calculated amp-hour capacities based solely on the nominal/default brick calculated ampere-hour capacity values to improve the high voltage battery management system full pack energy prediction.” On the low voltage page, you will have access to a can bus diagnostic panel that is not available in regular service mode. As you can see in the attached image, this gives you a visual representation of three of the main can busses on the vehicle and the various module states (Figure 2). If one of the modules has a problem, it will be indicated on the screen. However, please be aware that you need to make sure that various drive rails (power supplies) are enabled so that these modules can talk. These visuals indeed can be extremely helpful when tasked with communication problems. If you’d like to learn more about entering service mode and some more of the ins and outs of it, here’s a link to a video that I live-streamed that walks you through Service Mode: youtu.be/nRW7evDC7O0.

Tesla Garage
Tesla Garage is accessible from within your active Toolbox subscription and provides you with a way to remotely
connect to a vehicle and retrieve more information about the vehicle. This can be extremely helpful in not only looking at current vehicle data but can offer up a look at high-resolution data from the past. To obtain connection permission, you’ll need to use the Owner Authorization Request function. After making a Garage connection, then it would be wise to go into the CAN Explorer (Periscope) and request data logs from the past when the client was reporting vehicle symptoms. Once you do this, then when you are researching vehicle problems and viewing articles, it is possible that you might be presented with a notice like what is shown in Figure 3. If you select the “View Plots” link, you’ll automatically load up Periscope, which is Tesla’s data viewer allowing service personnel to research vehicle problems. Tesla Periscope is a newer addition to the Toolbox suite of service tools, and it’s a powerful tool as you’ll see demonstrated later in this article.

MAINTENANCE SERVICES
Tesla and other BEVs will require maintenance. Here is a list of services we carry out in our facility.
• Alignment and tires – Tires for EVs have more demand due to vehicle weight and torque. Tires should be rotated every 5-6,000 miles. Wheel alignment checks can be done via software within service mode, but I have found many of these vehicles leaving the factory with wheel alignments that are not set up for optimum tire life.
• HVAC – The A/C system is an integral part of the EV systems and on pretty much all EVs. Therefore, there are maintenance and inspections that should be performed on Teslas. Every five years, Tesla states that the desiccant bag shall be replaced, which of course will require an evacuation and recharge of the system. Be sure to check service information for the appropriate tools and equipment needed to remove and install the desiccant bag and filter. This is also a suitable time to make sure that there is the proper amount of oil within the system which can be checked using an appropriately prepared sight glass as shown in Figure 5.
• Brake Systems – The brakes rarely get used on an EV that is driven in a manner that is most efficient, but the braking system still must be able to stop the vehicle. Periodic inspections of the brake pads and rotors should be performed. Additionally, periodic maintenance on the brake caliper sliders along with brake fluid replacement should be performed as well. Check service information for more info.
• General inspections – Teslas use a lot of aero close-out panels which should be removed periodically for proper inspections. Looking for any anomalies such as hose or harness routing, evidence of critter exploration, drivetrain mounts, and heat exchanger airflow problems that can occur from the accumulation of debris between the condenser and radiators. Additionally, since BEVs weigh 20-30 percent more than their ICE counterparts, suspension wear and tear will likely present many service opportunities.
CASE STUDY – MODEL S BATTERY ISSUE
I received a text from a colleague about a 2012 Model S with 174k miles that arrived at his shop with a client complaint of a warning message on the display stating that there was a problem with the HV battery and the fact that the client was unable to charge the battery above 30 percent. After gaining authorization from the client to remote into the vehicle, we retrieved an Urgent Alert BMS_u018_SOC. Looking this up in Tesla Toolbox, I came across Article 7763300, which had the following statements:
“In certain scenarios, a customer-visible High Voltage (HV) battery State of Charge (SOC) imbalance alert sets due to a condition unrelated to the HV batterybricks.
In these situations, it is prudent not to simply replace the HV battery pack without further diagnosis to confirm an SOC imbalance exists: in some cases, simply updating the vehicle firmware or running an Onboard Diagnostic Interface (ODIN) routine might resolve the issue.”
The document listed several steps to follow, which we did, and we were able to get the vehicle to charge well past 80 percent. The cell balancing deltas went from approximately 422mv to 40mv over the course of a few days of discharging and recharging the battery
Figure 6 – Periscope historic BMS data
after performing the resets outlined in the service document. Here are the data valves we collected near the end of one of the final charge cycles:
• Voltage: 385.3 V
• Battery Min Temp: 27 °C
• Max Temp: 28 °C
• Min Brick V: 4 V
• Max Brick V: 4 V
• SOC Min Unscaled: 81.8 percent
• Max Unscaled: 86.2 percent
• CAC Min: 239 Ah
• CAC Max: 239 Ah
• CAC Average: 239 Ah
Looking back at the data logs from the vehicle during our discharge > recharge routines, I was able to observe the cell min and max values and their progression over time (Figure 6). This vehicle was recently purchased through a used car dealer, and with no service history and over 174k miles on the clock, it might need a new traction battery in the future, but for now, the client can continue to get effective use out of the vehicle as
it is. The shop will continue working with the client so we can monitor the vehicle’s battery performance.
CONCLUSION
I hope you found this article helpful and informative and if you’d like to see more Tesla coverage, please let us know as there is a lot more we can discuss. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to reach out.

Building a community
Between investing in his community and investing in his truck, Ortiz has built his career on solid foundations.
By Griffin Matis, Associate Editor
When we first talked with Mac Tools distributor Ricardo Ortiz back in 2016, he was celebrating his tenth year as a distributor and had just bought a 2016 M2 Freightliner 24’ wide body that was full of custom accessories including battery compartments, lit-up external storage, custom tool mounts, an air compressor, and a diesel generator.
Now celebrating his 18th year, he’s still in El Monte, California, and driving the same ‘16 M2 Freightliner, although he had to deal with a frustrating problem with the generator and a few recalls right after he picked up the truck. One of the few updates he’s had to make over the years is changing out the equipment for demonstrating power tools since they’ve gotten so much more powerful. It’s been smooth sailing since then. His route, on the other hand, has changed a lot over his career.
UPDATING THE ROUTE
“Well, I remember when I started in ‘06 when the recession started going down with businesses closing shop, redevelopment, the city was moving things around,” Ortiz says. “I did lose a lot of shops just because the city where I’m at wanted to try and change.”
As the area continued to grow and change, so did Ortiz’s customer base. While some shops closed down, so did some of the other distributors in the area, allowing Ortiz to take over and expand his route.
“I’ve been talking a lot more about heavy duty [facilities] versus the dealerships,” Ortiz says. “I still got a lot of independent shops that are still good, but I’m kind of all over the place, which is nice, too.”
He also found security in working with heavy duty operations rather than shops that work on consumer vehicles. It’s nearly impossible for technicians to avoid downtime in conventional shops, but for heavy duty shops and facilities, the work almost never stops.
“On the [heavy duty] truck side, if you got a truck that has the brakes go out and they need brakes, they don’t ask you how much is it – he asks you when can you get it done,
versus a car where the customer can wait or shop around with downtime.”
GROWING WITH CUSTOMERS
The other changes in his route have been the result of his years of relationship-building with his customers and his community. He’ll let customers that are frustrated about work vent their problems before gently guiding them to a tool that would make that work situation better. He’ll even stop by shops after closing or during community events to barbecue and share a few drinks with some of his customers. As Ortiz’s career flourished, so did his original customers’ careers.
“I have a lot of these customers that were in the dealerships and independent spots when they first started and I started taking care of them. Now, they actually got promoted, they moved up along in their company, and I had that relationship, so when they move [to a different shop], we’re open to that shop.”
PROMOS IN THE BACK, A/C IN THE FRONT
As far as organization goes, Ortiz tries to work with his customer’s habits and preferences. He puts promotional materials and the small things customers always want – sodas, personal flashlights, on sale items – in the very back of his truck so customers look at the rest of the inventory. He also reorganizes his truck depending on the season. During summer, he’ll put an A/C machine right at the door; during winter, he hangs shirts and jackets in front of a vent so they’re swaying in the warm breeze. His workspace is in a corner, which he doesn’t love since it requires that he turn his back on any customers.
Two things Ortiz advises new distributors to consider for their trucks: good steer tires and awnings. He also points to his generator, A/C unit, and refrigerator as investments that have paid off during his time as a tool distributor.
“I mean, it’s just been good to me,” Ortiz says. “It’s been a blessing.”
Ricardo Ortiz El Monte, California
Top Left- Ortiz has been driving his 2016 M2 Freightliner since buying it eight years ago. Top Right- Ortiz keeps his products organized by purpose. Middle Left- Though his shelving is holding up well, Ortiz had to update his power tool displays as they've become more powerful. Middle Right- The back of Ortiz's truck includes space for toolboxes and additional shelving. Bottom Right- Ortiz throws barbecues for his customers and community. Bottom Left- By building relationships with his customers, Ortiz has established his place as a distributor.
It’s showtime!
When preparing for a sales call, it’s important to get into the right mindset.
By Alan Sipe, Contributing Editor
Last Thursday night, I watched most of the Kansas City Chiefs versus the Baltimore Ravens season-opening football game. Since Baltimore is in the same division as my team, the Steelers, I was happy KC won. Now, certainly, Baltimore is a good team with a great quarterback but what I noticed, as did the referees, is that Baltimore was set up for failure many times with off-sides and illegal formation sets. Each of those infractions cost Baltimore time on the clock, yards, downs, and chipped away at their confidence.
This is similar to a golfing buddy of mine who prepares for every drive with an open stance, hips and shoulders pointed left, and a cutting swing. Not surprisingly his drive slices off to the right into the rough or trees and costs his score dearly. If you’re a golfer you know what I mean and if you’re not a golfer, a slice is a banana ball curving way to the right….it’s bad.
So, what about you, are you set up for success each and every day or do you have good days and bad days, or just wing it and hope for the best?
The most important part of each sales day is the space between your ears. What’s your attitude? My wife used to get so mad at me when we would be having a discussion about something I had done wrong as we would be going to some social event yet as we walked in the door I was Mr. Congeniality. She was still PO’d but I was all smiles. Just like a sales call, it was showtime.
PREPARING YOURSELF FOR THE “SHOW”
I’m sorry but the world doesn’t really care about your problems or your personal issues. Keep them to yourself. Your customer probably has their own sack of issues and as hard as it may be you have to listen to their problems but can not unload your own.
Try relating this to going out to dinner at a nice restaurant. Compare your tip percentage when the server is less than friendly and not particularly helpful to when the server makes you feel special, attended to, and that they are happy to help you. That 20 percent average tip will often jump to 25 percent or dip to 15 percent depending on the server’s attitude. Wouldn’t you love that 25 percent increase in your revenue?
Who wants to buy expensive tools from Grumpy Gus or someone who seems to have the weight of the world on their shoulders? No matter what pile of crapola has landed on you lately, it’s showtime.
THE COMMERCIAL VISITOR VS. THE SALES PROFESSIONAL
Get your head set up right, paint on that happy face, and get out there. Once you’ve completed those steps, then you’ll have to decide if you will be a commercial visitor or a sales professional.
A commercial visitor is the person who stops by a business, has the latest weather report, sports scores,
industry rumor, or (please no!) some political opinion. None of these topics sell tools. In fact, expressing a political opinion at this time is probably worse than talking about religion.
The professional salesperson understands clearly why they are making calls and orchestrates each call with a success plan.
One of the best Klein Tools salesmen that I worked with was Darrell Brown in San Francisco. Darrell opened up every sales call with a review of the previous call. This accomplished several things. It showed the customer that he was important and that Darrell was thinking about them. It was also an excellent way to close the deal on something that was presented on the previous sales call without success.
“Last time we talked, you were seriously considering the new XYZ high-speed grinder. I have one with me today.
If you remember, it is an adjustable head for flexibility and a zillion rpm drive motor. Would you like to go ahead with it?” If this approach works only a third of the time just think of the extra income it will earn you.
A professional sales plan also should normally include something new that is based on that customer’s unique needs and work applications. Showing a bodyman the latest exhaust analyzer, just because it is on promotion, is probably a waste of your time and theirs. So, unlike the Baltimore
Ravens, go into each play, or customer interaction, set correctly and professionally for success.
GETTING READY FOR THE BIG SALE
Now I understand that in a normal work week, you make sales calls to 200 or so technicians. I know that each call is important, but some are really important. By really important I mean the presentation of a $12$15,000 tool storage system or a bigtime piece of technical equipment. These don’t happen every day and you really need to be set up for success for these important transactions.
Even though this is a work purchase and not a personal purchase people normally make big decisions the same way.
Just think of the last time you bought a new personal vehicle. You were initially with the salesperson who reviewed the features and benefits of the vehicle you were interested in. They then got you sitting in the
driver’s seat and started using words like “your car”, and “your pride of ownership” so that you started to feel like this was your vehicle.
Next, you went on a test drive for you to get a feel for your new vehicle. And by now the salesperson is phrasing things to reduce your “sticker shock.” After the test drive, you probably went to the salesperson’s quiet desk or even a private room without distractions to close the deal.
What I’m getting at here is that the shop floor is absolutely not the setup location to close a big deal. There are too many noises and activity distractions and potentially prying coworkers to butt in during your presentation. Just think of asking a prospect for $12,000 with an air hammer pounding in the next shop bay. Your mobile store, a breakfast location before work, at lunch, or even the prospect’s home are all better locations to close a big deal. The shop floor is not.
Back in my Knipex days, when our team was getting ready for a big
presentation at the major automotive brands or major industrial distributors, we were 100 percent set up for success. We developed and rehearsed a presentation based on that prospect’s needs. We were prepared to answer whatever questions and objections that might come up. We had respect for those we were calling on and had an excellent sales/marketing team in place. In your case that’s you. We were set for sales success on each and every call and you need to be too. Now, go sell something … it’s showtime

Inventory matters
This Cornwell Quality Tools distributor knows that having the right inventory sets him up for success.
By Emily Markham, Editor
Adistributor’s relationship with their customers is a key part of running a successful business, and Cornwell Quality Tools distributor Troy MacRae has cultivated excellent relationships with his Poway, California, customer base.
MacRae notes that in his five and a half years as a distributor, he’s watched some of his customers go from lube technicians to master technicians, and he’s glad to have been able to help them get to that level. But his relationships with his customers go beyond watching them grow professionally, as he’s also watched them

grow personally – getting married and starting their families.
“It’s all part of the relationship I have with my customer base,” MacRae says.
IT’S ALL IN THE INVENTORY
Every industry has its challenges, but MacRae notes that one of the most difficult parts of being a distributor is maintaining “relevant” or “trendy” inventory or even just keeping products in stock.
“Out of stocks [are] probably the worst thing you could have on a tool truck, and sometimes it’s out of your control,” MacRae says.
However, after spending 33 years in the beverage industry, MacRae learned a lot about marketing and sales.
“You got to know what they need and you gotta be able to have it on the truck,” he says. “Because when guys come on the truck, basically, you get a 3-minute window. They’re not there to socialize and ask you how your day is. They’re in there to get the tool.”
SELLING MORE THAN JUST TOOLS
Sometimes having the right inventory means selling more than just tools. Though MacRae ensures he has the products that each of his customers needs, whether they’re an independent shop, a body shop, or a heavy duty shop, he also carries beyond what the average tool distributor has on their truck.
Two weeks a month, MacRae’s wife will make baked goods from scratch for him to sell on the truck.
“She makes the best banana bread in the world,” he says. “I got guys that raise chickens and give me eggs just to bake them brownies and cookies. I also carry ice cream on the truck, which is free, and they’ll still go to the banana bread and the brownies first.”
Additionally, come November, MacRae changes out a section of his truck to prepare for the holidays.
“Technicians don’t have time to go Christmas shopping,” MacRae says. “A lot of these guys work six days a week because they make their extra money doing side jobs on Saturday, so I carry diamond necklaces, diamond earrings, G Shock watches, candles, hand mittens, cooking attire for BBQ grills, and things like that.”
The distributor also makes sure to speak with everyone at the shop, not just the technicians. By doing this, he increases his customer count from around 250 people to about 350 during the holiday season.
With MacRae’s unique inventory and the reliability he provides his customers, others may wish he would expand his business, but for now, the distributor says he’s looking to “drive my tool truck towards the sunset and then retirement because the ocean’s not that far from me.”
