Back to the basics that sell

What’s actually moving in the tire and wheel category might not be what you think.

There’s a tendency in this industry to chase what’s new. New technology. New tools.

New categories. While those things absolutely matter, working on this month’s cover story was a reminder that sometimes the most important opportunities are not new at all. They are the ones that have been right in front of us the entire time.

Tire and wheel service is one of those categories.

It touches nearly every shop, every route, and every distributor in some way. It is consistent, it is necessary, and it continues to evolve. But what stood out most while reporting on this month's cover story was not the technology or even the equipment, it was the reality of what is actually moving.

Independent distributor Curtiss Ryan put it simply, the demand is in the everyday tools. The products that solve problems in real time. The ones technicians reach for when something does not go as planned. Stripped lug nuts, swollen hardware, basic service needs. These are not flashy sales, but they are consistent ones.

In many ways, they are the foundation of trust between a distributor and their customer. When a technician is stuck, it is not the newest product that matters most. It is whether you have the right solution on your truck at that moment.

That does not mean equipment and diagnostics take a back seat. They are still critical to the category. But they are part of a bigger picture, one that requires distributors to think beyond individual products and focus on how everything works together in the shop.

What does a complete offering really look like? It is not just a tire machine. It is not just a TPMS

tool. It is the combination of tools, equipment, and knowledge that helps a customer get the job done without interruption.

That is where the opportunity is.

For distributors, this category is not about chasing a single big sale. It is about building a truck, a business, and a relationship around what your customers actually need every day. And in many cases, that starts with the basics.

Sometimes the most valuable thing you can do is not introduce something new. It is making sure you have the right solution when your customer needs it most.

In the bay, tire and wheel service comes down to getting the job done efficiently, often with the tools technicians rely on every day.

Building a profitable TIRE AND WHEEL OFFERING

What distributors should be stocking, recommending, and supporting across the category.

Tire and wheel service remains one of the most consistent areas of opportunity in the shop, but for distributors, covering the category takes more than offering a tire machine or carrying a few specialty tools. Today’s shops need a full mix of equipment, diagnostics, service tools, and application-specific accessories to keep work moving efficiently and profitably.

That broad need is what makes tire and wheel service such an important category for distributors. It touches nearly every repair environment, from general service shops and tire dealers to fleets and alignment-focused businesses. It also spans a wide range of product types, from high-ticket equipment like tire changers and wheel balancers, to everyday items such as tire irons, bead breakers, inflation devices, and lug nut removal tools.

Just as important, tire and wheel service has grown more complex. TPMS remains a source of frustration for many shops. Vehicle applications continue to diversify. Customers expect faster turnaround times, and technicians need tools and equipment that help them get the job done right the first time. For distributors, that means understanding not only what products are available, but how those products fit into the day-to-day realities of the shop.

Photos courtesy of Curtiss Ryan
Curtiss Ryan of Ryan Tool Co. says everyday service tools, from specialty sockets to tire service essentials, remain the strongest sellers in the tire and wheel category.

COVER STORY

Insights from independent distributor Curtiss Ryan, as well as manufacturers Coats, Bosch Mobility Aftermarket, and Ken-Tool, point to the same conclusion: supporting tire and wheel service requires a complete approach. Shops need dependable equipment, strong TPMS coverage, everyday service tools that solve common problems, and product recommendations that reflect the actual work being done in the bay.

BUILDING THE FOUNDATION WITH EQUIPMENT

Even with the strength of everyday tool sales, large equipment remains a critical part of tire and wheel service. However, independent distributor Curtiss Ryan notes that these purchases often happen outside of the traditional mobile distribution channel.

“Most large equipment like tire machines and balancers is sold and financed directly,” Ryan says, “which makes it difficult for tool trucks to compete in that space.”

That does not make equipment irrelevant to distributors, but it does change the role they play. Understanding how shops evaluate those purchases can help distributors better support customers, even if they are not directly closing those sales.

Kevin Keefe, director of marketing at Coats, says demand in the category is being shaped by more than sticker price alone.

“We’re seeing a real flight to overall value,” Keefe says, “where maintenance cost, service availability, and uptime are given as much weight as the initial purchase price.”

That reflects a broader shift in how shops think about equipment investment. A machine may represent a major upfront expense, but the true value often comes down to how reliably it performs, how easily technicians can use it, and how much downtime it

helps prevent over the life of the product. In tire service, where workflow and throughput directly affect shop profitability, those factors carry weight.

Coats is also seeing shops focus more heavily on repeatability and efficiency. Keefe explains that current conversations around tire changers and wheel balancers are centered on making service more consistent and less prone to error.

“Shops are focused on getting the job done right the first time,” he says, “in the most efficient way possible.”

That emphasis on repeatable service has important implications for distributors. Recommending tire service equipment is not just about matching a customer with a machine. It also means understanding what types of vehicles the shop sees most often and what accessories, adapters, and consumables may be required to support that work.

“It’s critical,” Keefe says, “for a distributor to understand a customer’s shop profile. There is no worse feeling for a customer than to start using a new machine and realize it is not properly equipped for the work they need to do.”

That can mean asking better questions up front. Does the shop handle high-end or customized vehicles? Is its business centered on light trucks or medium duty work? Is it trying to increase tire volume, improve balancing speed, or reduce the risk of wheel damage? Those details can determine not only which equipment model is the best fit, but also which add-ons are essential.

Ease of use, efficiency, and training also continue to influence buying decisions, especially for what Keefe describes as revenue-critical systems.

“All of these factors directly impact a customer’s ability to get the job done right the first time,” he says, “especially

A look inside Curtiss Ryan’s truck shows a focus on high-turn items, including specialty sockets and service tools that support routine tire and wheel work.

COVER STORY

when you’re talking about equipment that drives revenue.”

WHAT’S ACTUALLY MOVING IN THE FIELD

While equipment defines the service bay, distributor feedback paints a more grounded picture of what moves consistently.

Ryan says demand in the field leans heavily toward everyday service tools, especially products that solve common problems quickly.

“We’re seeing more demand for everyday service tools,” Ryan says, noting that TPMS tools can be harder to move. “Many shops receive them through their sensor suppliers.”

Among the products he sees most often are specialty sockets designed to remove stripped or swollen lug nuts, a frequent issue in tire service.

“We get a lot of requests for those,” Ryan explains, “because swollen lug nuts are a big issue with two-piece designs where corrosion causes the outer cap to expand.”

While large equipment like tire changers and balancers remains

essential, Ryan says those purchases often fall outside what mobile distributors can realistically support.

“Most large equipment like tire machines and balancers is sold and financed directly,” he says, “which makes it difficult for tool trucks to compete in that space.”

Instead, distributors are finding opportunities in areas that require more hands-on selling, particularly diagnostics.

“It’s almost impossible to get a shop to spend that kind of money on a scan tool without using it first,” he says.

By offering demo or loaner tools, Ryan has been able to help customers evaluate products before committing, a strategy that continues to drive sales.

TPMS REMAINS A CHALLENGE

If there is one area where Ryan consistently sees shops struggle, it is TPMS.

“TPMS continues to be a major challenge,” he says. “Signal strength and compatibility are still common issues, especially with aftermarket wheels.”

Those challenges are not new, but

they continue to evolve as vehicle technology changes. Shops are often dealing with outdated tools, limited sensor compatibility, and systems that do not fully support newer applications.

James Latham, product marketing manager at Bosch Mobility Aftermarket, says standalone TPMS reset and relearn tools are seeing strong demand as shops look to upgrade aging equipment.

“Standalone TPMS tools are seeing strong demand,” Latham says, “as shops look to replace outdated tools and increase revenue with something easier to use.”

He adds that related service tools are also gaining traction.

“We’re also seeing demand for tools like inch-pound digital torque wrenches,” he notes, “to properly torque sensors and prevent damage during installation.”

According to Latham, one of the biggest challenges shops still face is keeping pace with evolving technology.

“Older tools might not have the latest model year coverage,” he explains, “and many can’t service newer

Curtiss Ryan has built his Ryan Tool Co. trucks around the tools his customers need most, with everyday tire and wheel service products leading demand.

technologies like Bluetooth or heavy duty sensors.”

Compatibility with aftermarket sensors remains another sticking point. Tools that are limited in what they support can create inefficiencies and restrict shop flexibility.

For distributors, Latham says the recommendation process should focus on three key areas.

“The key points are coverage, compatibility, and support,” he says, emphasizing that shops need tools capable of handling a wide range of vehicle applications and sensor types.

That guidance aligns closely with what Ryan is seeing in the field.

“TPMS continues to be a major challenge,” Ryan says. “Signal strength and compatibility are still common issues, especially with aftermarket wheels.”

Designed for TPMS service, the Bosch TPA 400 offers wireless programming, OBD-II capability, and compatibility across a wide range of sensor types.

Together, those perspectives highlight an important role for distributors. Selling a TPMS tool is not just about the product itself. It is about helping shops understand how that tool will perform across different vehicles, sensors, and service scenarios.

Bosch has recently expanded its offerings in this space, including the Tire Pressure Analyzer 400, designed to support both OEM and aftermarket

sensors while covering newer technologies. Additional tools, such as digital torque wrenches and programmable sensor lines, are aimed at addressing common installation and compatibility challenges.

EVERYDAY TOOLS THAT KEEP SHOPS MOVING

While equipment and diagnostics shape the category, everyday service

tools remain the most consistent source of demand.

That is exactly what Ryan sees on his truck.

From specialty sockets to service tools used in mounting, demounting, and inflation, these products continue to move because they are tied directly to the work technicians perform every day.

According to Ken-Tool’s VP of Sales and Marketing, Doug Lee, demand remains strong for core service tools.

“Tire irons, bead breakers, and tire spoons continue to see strong demand,” Lee says, “because these are the tools technicians rely on every day.”

He points to a wide range of supporting tools that play a critical role in the workflow.

“Inflation devices, tire cages, and automatic inflators are also key,” Lee

explains, along with tire bars, bead keepers, and lubricants.

For distributors, recommending these tools effectively requires understanding the application.

“It really comes down to knowing what type of tires the shop is servicing and the environment they’re working in,” he says.

Temperature, tire size, and construction all influence which tools are needed.

“The application really dictates the tool selection,” Lee adds.

As vehicle use cases expand, so do tool requirements. Smaller, more rigid tires, such as those used in last-mile delivery vehicles, can require specialized tools designed specifically for those applications.

Ken-Tool has also introduced newer products aimed at improving

usability, including rotating air chucks, advanced inflation devices, and updated tire spreaders designed to improve access during service.

These types of tools represent a strong opportunity for distributors. They address specific challenges, offer clear benefits, and often require minimal explanation compared to more complex equipment.

A COMPLETE APPROACH TO THE CATEGORY

For Ryan, building the right truck inventory is about more than carrying a wide range of products. It is about making sure those products support the full scope of tire and wheel service. That includes not only the tools used in day-to-day repairs, but also the broader services shops rely on.

“A well-rounded tire and wheel shop needs to be able to perform alignments,” Ryan says. “Alignments are highly profitable, and they’re one of the most important services a shop can offer.”

That perspective reinforces the idea that tire and wheel service does not exist in isolation. It is part of a larger workflow that includes diagnostics, equipment, and related services that drive revenue for the shop.

For distributors, success in the category comes down to understanding that full picture.

From the tools that solve immediate problems to the equipment and diagnostics that support long-term efficiency, each piece plays a role. Distributors who can connect those pieces and align them with their customers’ needs are better positioned to build stronger relationships and drive consistent sales.

For Ryan, that approach is simple. It starts with understanding what his customers deal with every day and making sure his truck reflects that reality.

5 modifications to make on your tool truck

Over time, you may find it beneficial to make some small updates to your truck to make everyday tasks easier.

As a tool dealer, it’s not unusual to spend more time in your tool truck than in your own home. You spend hours every week driving your tool truck, stocking it, and working to maintain it so it always looks its best. However, sometimes even the small tasks like cleaning the step grates or tidying a shelf can become tedious and feel like more work than they should be. Finding ways to enhance the functionality and appearance of your truck is something many tool distributors are accustomed to. In this article, I cover five small modifications I made to my truck that helped to simplify some of those tedious daily tasks.

1. INSTALLING A REAR CAMERA WASHER

To improve the functionality of my rear camera, I decided to build a rear camera washer. I wanted to do this because inclement weather made the camera useless, but that’s exactly when the camera is most important. To do this, I made the washer nozzle out of a piece of 3/16” brake line and used a tubing bender.

Making simple modications to your tool truck can reduce time spent on tedious tasks.

2. ADDING A STAINLESS STEEL SHELF CAP

Greasy handprints are an issue on a tool truck. I had purchased a stainless steel shelf from Amazon and cut it down so I could use it as a protective cover over the carpet. This shelf’s location gets heavy hand traffic as it’s by the handrail and is always in need of cleaning. To simplify this, I installed a couple of strips of Velcro on the underside of the shelf to make it easily removable for cleaning. The shelf looks great and is much easier to wipe off.

3. LIFT GATE REMOTE

The electric motor for a tool truck’s lift gate is similar to a winch. Usually, lift gates are operated by a hard-wired coil cord that plugs into a socket near the lift gate. It’s a huge advantage to

be able to move freely while using the lift gate. It can be a little scary unloading an 84” toolbox without it. The remote makes a difficult task safer. Tool truck builders offer the option, but it’s a simple add-on if your truck isn’t equipped with one.

4. STEP GRATE MAGNETS

When customizing your tool truck, the builder may have a step grate option. Typically, this is a slide-in tray that collects dirt. It’s amazing how much dirt it traps (works great for trapping snow too). I cleaned the pan often. It was a pain because it involved removing six screws on each step. I purchased pistol magnets and mounted them on the back of the step. I used flat-faced elevator bolts so I

could adjust the slide-in waste tray to fit against the magnet. This mod eliminates all the screws and makes for a simple slide-out tray.

5. A WRENCH HANDRAIL

When I had originally seen this wrench-hand rail, they drilled a hole completely through the wrench. I hated the look of the “bolt-on,” so for mine, I tapped and drilled the back of the wrench so it looks suspended to the wall. I’d guess 90 percent of my customers spun the box ratchet opening every week. Guys just had to spin the ratchet end when they got on the truck. It used to make me laugh. I’d tell customers, “Every time that ratchet wrench spins, a tool man gets his wings.”

Rock, paper, scissors, sale!

This distributor likes to keep things fun on his truck by playing quick games with his customers that help make sales.

Two years ago, Mac Tools distributor Paul Gast went from turning wrenches to selling them. When Bo Eastman, Gast’s previous tool distributor and long-time friend, had the opportunity to become a district manager, Gast offered to buy his tool truck and take the route. Now, Gast rolls through Oregon, making stops in Junction City, Harrisburg, Philomath, and Corvallis.

“My route is a lot of rural areas,” Gast says. “It’s a lot of windshield time for me.”

MAKING THE TRUCK HIS OWN

In taking over Eastman’s route, Gast also took over his tool truck. The truck is a 2020 Freightliner M2 with a 24’ long, wide-body box built by Summit Body Works and leased through Trans Lease. Though Gast didn’t design his tool truck, he has made modifications to make it his own.

“I added some solar panels and some things to help with charging systems, and of course, computer systems for my everyday use,” Gast says. “But I would like to convert all the inverters and batteries to lithium just to be more efficient.”

Additionally, he’s added two TV displays and some LED signs to help promote products and guide customers’ buying decisions. Gast is also currently considering updating some of his product displays so he can showcase more tools. Slider walls and magnetic faces for his shelving are some options he’s interested in to free up space. He notes that even when utilizing all the wall and ceiling space available,

“You quickly run out of room.”

To keep products easy to find, the distributor organizes all similar or relevant tools in the same location. However, every few months or so, he likes to rotate everything to “keep it fresh.” He finds that this change-up works well with his customers.

“The customers get on the truck, and they get comfortable seeing the same stuff … [but] when you change it up, it brings new light to what they already may have seen, but they just kind of looked over it,” Gast explains. “Usually when I do that, you can see a boost in sales for a couple of weeks because to them it’s new even though you may have had it on the truck for a while.”

FUN WITH SALES

In addition to changing up his tool organization every few months, Gast also likes to change out promotions. He has a promo shelf that is updated to feature different weekly deals. On top of that, he likes to put games on his truck, like darts or Plinko, or run raffles.

“I even sometimes just play simple rock, paper, scissors just to make them feel like they’re getting something … and they have fun doing it,” Gast says. “I always try to keep it interesting. That way, it keeps them excited to come to the truck every week. You might lose a little money because you’re giving something away for free, but honestly, the guys have fun, and you should have fun, too.”

The ins and outs of buying a new tool truck

A quick guide on the many considerations that go into purchasing a new tool truck.

Whether you’ve outgrown your current truck or perhaps you’re simply concerned about the longevity of your older truck, you’ll likely be considering purchasing a new tool truck. Buying a new, or new to you, tool truck can be a lengthy journey. There are so many considerations of styles and options. If you’re already in business, you probably have a pretty good idea of the options you’d like to have in your new truck. However, if you’re looking to purchase your first tool truck to start your new business, it can be very intimidating.

GETTING STARTED

Check out tool truck manufacturer websites or resale websites for information on what’s currently available. They are a great place to look at pricing and view all the different styles and options available. I like viewing the interior pictures. These websites are a great tool for looking at all the different interior layouts, styles, and options.

VEHICLE TYPE

The most important consideration when buying a new truck is the type of vehicle. The two most common are step van and cab chassis box trucks. There are also some dealers using tool trailers.

Trailers

Trailers are not on the “approved” list of vehicles from most flags. Additionally, the drawback of accessibility in crowded parking lots is a lot of legwork exiting the cab and

walking around to the side of the trailer at every stop. You trade a lift gate for a ramp door for loading and unloading toolboxes and equipment. It also requires a generator. On the flip side, the biggest benefit is easily using another tow vehicle should you experience a breakdown. I think every dealer should consider adding a cargo trailer once they can afford the expense. I installed carpeted bunks and “E” track in mine. It makes a great plan B should your truck break down. I also found it to be a great way to pick up used toolboxes.

Step vans and cab chassis box trucks

Step vans, without a doubt, make the best use of space. Nearly every inch of the truck has merchandising space. Most only require two steps from the street to the showroom, compared to three steps on a cab/chassis truck. While it’s only one step more, over the course of a day, it adds up. They are easier to maneuver in tight spaces, although I don’t like sitting on top of the steer tires when encountering ice, snow, and/or hydroplaning conditions in heavy rain. I also personally don’t find step vans as comfortable to drive as cab/chassis trucks. Because of that, I think they’re better suited for city routes. I always had rural routes, so I wanted my drive time to be as comfortable as possible. All the glass from the windshield can make them a bigger challenge to cool in the summer, whereas a cab/chassis will have a bulkhead door to separate the cab from the box. Along with that, step vans having all that merchandising area in the cab space are not as easy

to secure when leaving at a repair shop for service.

YOUR TRUCK SHOULD FIT YOUR NEEDS

I had four different tool trucks in my career. The first didn’t have access from the cab to the display box. The difference in my fatigue level between walking around the truck to the display box and stepping into it from the driver’s seat was amazing. My second truck had a “pass-thru” from the driver’s seat to the display area. At the time, crouching down from the driver’s seat wasn’t an issue because of my younger age. Then, when I went back on a truck in my late 50s, I quickly outgrew my new 20’ truck and ordered another new 24’ truck. My “mature” body greatly appreciated having full walk-through cabs on both the 20’ and the 24’ trucks.

FUEL OPTIONS

Fuel choice is another important consideration. While diesel trucks cost more and the fuel is considerably more expensive, I still believe they’re the best choice for most routes. Diesels are better suited for the heavier payload most trucks carry. I liked the benefit of being able to use an Espar diesel heater for the display area. They are extremely efficient and negate the need for a propane tank. Generators are becoming more common, too, and diesel is an efficient fuel source for that as well.

LEASE OR PURCHASE?

Many dealers lease their trucks. If you’re new to the business, it’s the primary way to finance a new tool

truck. For lenders to loan on a purchase, you need at least two years of experience. I used a home equity loan to purchase my first truck. Whether it’s better to purchase or lease is up to your personal financial situation. My accountant simplified the decision of lease or purchase. It depends largely on the success of your business and other outside money that might be part of the equation. This brings up another important aspect of the tool business. Find an accountant who fully understands the unique aspects of the business. I can not stress that enough.

TOP 5 “MUST-HAVES”

There’s obviously a large list of options available for a custom tool truck build. Here’s what I consider the top 5 “must-haves”.

• An “L” shaped desk on the driver’s side of the truck. You can face your customers while simultaneously viewing who’s entering from the street.

• A window above your “L” shaped desk. You can let fresh air in, see what’s going on outside, let light in, and most importantly, keep yourself from feeling like you’re locked up in a box all day.

• A sliding side door as opposed to a swing-out door. It would be a deal breaker for me. Swing-out doors are done to save money. You mainly see them on “program” trucks. They work great for the front door on your home, but not for your tool truck.

• A wireless remote control for the lift gate. Not only do you look cool using it, but it’s much safer. It’s also easy to add to most any tool truck.

• “Billboard lighting.” These are solid white strip lights under the drip molding along the top of the box. It allows the side of your truck to be lit for early morning and evening shops.

WHO TO BUY FROM

There are at least a half dozen upfitters building specialty vehicles. All

the builders that I’m aware of build a quality product. The decision of whom to purchase from is based mostly on price, personal preference, and service after the sale. Next to a home, it’s the largest purchase you’ll ever make. Do your research. I’ve yet to meet a dealer whose business didn’t increase from the purchase of a new truck. Nothing builds customer confidence better than reinvesting in your business. It sends the message that you’re successful and here to stay.

BRIAN FAHLGREN started in the tool business in 1998. Falhgren has been an employee dealer, franchised dealer, and district manager for two different flags. In 2018, he returned to the driver’s seat of his own tool truck. Providing premium service and his continuous “close to perfect” attitude, he achieved his goal of being a Top 10 dealer for Cornwell Quality Tools. He and his wife of over 44 years recently retired, moving from Oregon to the endless summers of Beverly Hills, Florida.

An equal partnership

These Cornwell Distributors have found success in their six years on the road because of their dedication to their customers and willingness to learn.

Cornwell distributor Dawson Michael has been driving the roads of Northeast, Indiana, in his tool truck since December 2020. Before becoming a distributor, Dawson performed different manual labor jobs depending on the season. In the summer, he’d focus on irrigation and landscape-related jobs, and in the winter, he shifted to house remodels.

What's your story?

Share the ups and downs of life on the road with us at Editor@VehicleServicePros.com and you could be featured in our next Tales from the Road column.

Looking for a change of pace, Dawson took inspiration from his fatherin-law who worked on his own mobile tool truck as a Cornwell distributor. Jessica, Dawson’s wife, helped her father out with his books and budget, familiarizing her with the lay of the land. The shift to working with Dawson was natural and took some of the physical toll off him. Not only that, but it also allowed him to move into something more slow-paced and family oriented.

Jessica plays a large role in helping Dawson keep the wheels moving on the truck in both the day-to-day operations and whenever he goes away for training as part of his duties in the

Army Reserves.

“She steps in and runs the route for me while I’m gone,” Dawson says. “She does a lot of bookkeeping and taxes. At night, she helps with the restocking, computer stuff, keeping track of customers, and missed payments and things like that.”

It’s a true, equal partnership with each person playing a pivotal role in making sure things run smoothly.

BALANCING ACT

It can be a challenge to balance work and life as a mobile dealer. Dawson is no stranger to the task of managing his time so that his business doesn’t become his entire focus. It’s a game of

When Dawson is unable to be on the truck, Jessica steps in and takes over for him. Photos courtesy of Dawson Michael

give and take.

One critical lesson the distributor has learned in his nearly six years behind the wheel is how to say no. Whether it’s walking away from a difficult customer or recognizing when you don’t have the bandwidth to handle a certain situation, learning to say no can save you unnecessary headache and allow you to focus on the things that help your business grow. No one wants to be caught in a situation that escalates or turns into something they don’t have the capacity to deal with. Time is precious in this industry.

“Make sure that you can keep everything balanced so you’re not spending too much time on the business, but you’re not neglecting it either,” Dawson explains.

A major part of the balancing act is keeping up with your customers. Dawson tries to get out to his stops every week, but if something comes up and he misses one, he’ll keep tabs on them, so they don’t feel shortchanged.

“I always try to make sure that we have the best customer service out of other trucks,” he says. “People are more

willing to do repeat business with you knowing you’re going to do what you can to take care of them.”

KEEPING A PULSE ON THE MARKET

Success has followed Dawson and Jessica since the beginning of their time in the industry. During their first full calendar year as distributors, they managed to sell 43 pieces of tool storage. Central to their continued success is their willingness to learn and stay knowledgeable on emerging technologies and shifting trends.

Social media has been a great tool for the Michaels, namely Facebook and TikTok, allowing them to see news about tool and equipment releases, as well as what other distributors and technicians are getting excited about. As a Cornwell distributor, Dawson gets access to Cornwell’s weekly news bulletins. These help him stay informed about new products to share with his customers.

“Customers bring things to my attention that they’ve seen out on the market,” Dawson adds. “Or things their buddy was using over the weekend, and they

thought it was the greatest thing ever.”

Listening to your customer’s interests and getting to know what excites them in the tool and equipment world can help you keep product moving on your truck. Dawson’s found success with having a steady supply of battery tools, lighting, and electronic diagnostic tools on hand.

“Making sure you have a multitude of test leads and different types of testing equipment [is important] so customers can get in and narrow down problems faster [during repairs],” Dawson advises.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Six years gives you plenty of time to think about what you want your future to look like. For Dawson and Jessica, their time in the industry so far has brought them much to be proud of. When they look towards the next five years, they hope to be debt free across the board, for both the business and their personal lives.

Dawson’s advice to distributors? “Trust your gut, learn how to say no, and try to have as much fun as you can.”

In their first year, the Michaels managed to sell 43 pieces of tool storage.
Dawson tends to sell a lot of battery, lighting, and diagnostic tools on his truck.

How do you know when to walk away from a sale?

It’s impossible to win everyone over or have a successful sale every time. When you’ve hit a roadblock in your selling process, it’s important to know when to walk away.

If you’ve spent more than a day in this industry, chances are you’ve had your fair share of awkward encounters, disgruntled customers, and technicians who make selling more difficult than it should be. But what do you do when you find yourself at an impasse with one of your customers and you can tell the sale isn’t going anywhere? We asked distributors to share their insight on how to know when to walk away from a sale. Here’s what they had to say.

1

Rely on your people skills

“Certain shops, when you have good relationships with your customers, they’ll tell you before that guy even walks out. They’ll say, ‘Hey, Mike just started here. I’d go light with him for a couple weeks. I don’t know if he’s

going to stay here.’ You need to rely on people reading skills. What’s he asking about, what’s he looking at? If he’s looking at something that’s a $1,000, and he wants to give you $20 a week, it’s kind of a telltale sign right there.”

2 Walk away, but don’t give up

“It’s a case-by-case, but you can tell by the body language and how the customer reacts to what you’re giving them. Sometimes the best thing to do is to walk away and let them think about it. Tell them, ‘If you have any other questions, I’m here, you’ve got my number.’ Always be truthful with them, that goes a long way.”

3 Listen to what other customers have to say “If things start to feel too one-sided, where you’re just getting run over on a deal, or you can just see that you’re going to have problems with it in the future. Customers will always be willing to help you if you help them. That’s always been big in a lot of these larger shops that we deal with, that word of mouth from other techs telling you, ‘Hey, man, just watch out for this guy. We’ve noticed that he’s been having problems.’ So just kind of play it on the low side.”

Don’t haggle with the customer

“I believe it is important to avoid aggressive sales tactics and resist being labeled as a 'discounter.' My philosophy is 'once a discounter, always a discounter.' If you haggle on price or terms once, a customer will likely try to haggle on every subsequent purchase. Unless a tool is damaged, aged, or overstock, we do not deviate from our sale price. We advertise our best price from the start; if a customer insists on haggling beyond those terms, that is usually when we walk away.”

5 Recongize what’s not good for your business

“Everybody should have a set margin on what they’re okay on taking, and not go below it. If it’s the guy asking for a discount every week because he wants to get to that bottom number, he’s not good for your business. It’s on each individual owner to decide what they think their bottom number is. I will admit there are times you go below it to get the first sale, to get them to come back and say good things. That’s a risk that you have to evaluate yourself. At the end of the day, go with your gut.”
