THE MID TO LONG TERM...

There are more than a handful of challenges in the market, but there are few who would predict contraction in the fastener and tool sector for the mid to long term. In fact, there are many projections expecting the opposite.

One report landing on the Torque news desk recently claimed that the industrial fasteners market will rise from US$92.13 billion (£68 billion or €79 billion) in 2026, to $113.33 billion (approx. £84.21 billion, or €97.35 billion) by 2031.

You may treat these kinds of reports with a dose of scepticism, you may be too busy manoeuvring your business through 2026 to mull them over, but the overall prognosis is pretty compelling.

The evolving regulatory environment is one of those irrefutable drivers of growth – Mordor Intelligence notes how stricter seismic safety regulations in North America and Japan, for example, are increasing the need for specific high-strength structural bolts in critical construction projects. Updated building codes in the UK (see pages 50-60) may do likewise.

There’s expansion of offshore wind projects as territories focus on energy resilience, automotive’s continued lean into EV and the changing statutory requirements around coatings (page 14)… in short, the market and legislators alike are driving and demanding innovation to meet new requirements and standards. It all adds up to an evolving, dynamic and expanding market with a bright future, despite current challenges.

EUROFER calls to extend CBAM to downstream products

European steel association EUROFER is calling on the European Commission to extend the remit of CBAM to include certain “downstream” sectors to avoid carbon leakage and “distortion within the value chains”.

The sectors proposed by EUROFER include mobility (including car and train components), machinery, construction, hand tools and metal goods, adding that CBAM’s current scope is insufficient “to ensure a level playing field across the full value chain”, creating an imbalance as European manufacturers face higher costs of carbonintensive finished products that fall outside the mechanism’s coverage.

CBAM is currently being introduced to imports of certain carbon intensive imported goods, including fasteners. The nascent import mechanism is currently within its “definitive” phase, meaning that importers of fasteners and other relevant

products are now liable to purchase and surrender CBAM certificates (when they become available in 2027).

EUROFER said: “The Commission proposal remains too narrow and entails a high risk of circumvention. Without an immediate broadening of the scope, CBAM risks shifting carbon leakage further downstream and creating distortions within the value chains. This weakens incentives for invest

ment in lowcarbon production and undermines the effective

ness of EU industrial and climate policies.

“Extending the CBAM to downstream steel and aluminiumintensive products with a simple and swift procedure is therefore crucial to provide a level playing field, support ongoing industrial transformation, and ensure consistency across the value chains.”

Court upholds Bulten’s customs appeal

Bulten looks to be in line for a significant customs refund of SEK 35 million following a ruling made by the Administrative Court in Stockholm, if the judgement becomes legally binding.

Covering antidumping duties on imports of materials from China between 20222024, Bulten appealed

Swedish Customs’ decision on product classification which affected the total Bulten paid in duties.

The court upheld Bulten’s appeal and thereby annuls the Swedish Customs’ previous decision on customs duties for those years.

“This is a pleasing and welcome announcement from the Administra

tive Court,” said Axel Berntsson, President and CEO. “The judgment confirms our view that we have classified our products correctly in accordance with the applicable regulations.”

The Swedish Customs may appeal the decision until 18 June 2026.

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS

With 33 years in the industry and over 25 years at Apex Stainless Fasteners, Julie Callaghan has seen plenty of changes in the market and believes there is greater potential to communicate the fastener industry’s wide range of career opportunities, to help attract a more diverse talent pool…

How did you get into the fastener industry?

I started at a young age by joining a fastener company that offered an apprenticeship in Business Administration. I was 16 at the time and was exploring various companies offering apprenticeships in my chosen college subject area. The job description at Everbright Fasteners really appealed to me, as its operations, customer base and product range were diverse, with a strong focus on customer service and delivering quality products. I was particularly drawn to the fastpaced sales environment, as well as the opportunity to deal directly with customers from day one.

What does your day-to-day job involve?

As Sales Manager, my main objective is to work closely with the Branch Manager and the senior team at Head Office to ensure we deliver the right product, at the right time and at the right price. My first priority each day is to confirm that all orders have been processed and delivered as expected.

As a wellknown distributor in the fastener market, there is added pressure to ensure our customers remain satisfied and that we repay their loyalty with the service levels they expect and deserve. The working day is always varied – challenging, enjoyable, hard work and consistently demanding. Being part of a small team in Leeds means I need to be versatile across all areas; however, we always have the support of our other branches when needed. The best part is always speaking with our regular customers.

What are the biggest changes you have seen in the industry and company since you started?

With over 33 years in the industry, there is little I haven’t seen change. The introduction of IT, increasingly advanced computer systems and automation has significantly accelerated the enquirytodelivery process. However, expectations today are that electronic systems will deliver perfection and immediate fulfilment, in an industry that still relies heavily on human input, experience and manual handling, all of which can lead to challenges across the supply chain.

More recently, legislation such as CBAM and broader sustainability requirements has extended enquiry times, with customers requesting more detailed product information. As these areas are still in their infancy, the industry is continuing to adapt and learn how best to meet these new demands.

Within the company, one of the most significant recent changes has been the introduction of a new ERP system, alongside the move from Bilston to Wednesbury for the central warehouse operation, which has significantly increased stockholding capacity.

Can you share some of your career highlights and milestones so far?

My biggest achievement was celebrating 25 years of service, alongside two colleagues, at Apex Stainless Fasteners. We helped open the Leeds branch together 25 years ago, and reaching this milestone reflects our hard work, dedication and

commitment to serving our customer base to the same standard as any of our larger branches.

Having joined Apex at the age of 24 as a Sales Executive, the opportunity to develop and progress to Sales Manager, as a woman in the fastener industry, is a genuine highlight. The support I have received throughout my career has been further strengthened since Apex’s acquisition by Bufab, whose proactive approach ensures that anyone can succeed with the right level of dedication.

What is your favourite thing about the fastener industry?

This is simple to answer – it is the people. I speak with regular customers daily and am fortunate to consider many of them friends. My colleagues feel like family, and you come to understand every aspect of the lives of those you work with. It is a pleasure to support customers who have been loyal over the years, and I hope I have, in some way, repaid that loyalty.

What do you think needs to be done to encourage more women to get involved in the fastener industry?

As long as we can clearly communicate the diverse range of opportunities and roles available in the industry, I believe anyone, including women, will recognise the benefits and potential it offers. I strongly believe that increasing female representation can encourage broader thinking and bring fresh perspectives to what has traditionally been a maledominated sector.

Education in the right areas is key to encouraging young women into the industry, with the aim of retaining their skills and providing a genuine longterm career path within the sector.

If you could, what piece of advice would you give your younger self as you started working in the fastener industry?

My advice would be not to expect to know everything immediately and to understand that you won’t disappoint customers if you need a little more time to fulfil their enquiry. Customers are generally very understanding, and as long as they can see you are trying to help, you may be surprised by the level of patience and support they are willing to offer someone starting out in the fastener industry.

Any final thoughts?

I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone I have worked with in the fastener industry over the many years I have been part of it. I deal with true friends on a daily basis and, at times, forget that we are delivering a vital service to almost every sector.

The level of professionalism and expertise required to ensure we continue to develop and evolve in the everchanging fastener industry should never be underestimated. We should all be recognised for the vital role we play in supporting our customers.

ECHA’s potential PFAS-ban – The death blow or a revitalisation for Zinc Flake Corrosion Protection Systems?

The implications of the potential PFAS ban are broad and far reaching but visibility and awareness of the issue needs to grow. Sabrina Hilbt, Strategic Sales Manager for Dörken Coatings GmbH & Co. KG, has been following the topic and, in this interview with Torque Magazine, discusses the issues and the solutions…

The potential PFAS-ban has been a hot topic for quite some time. But what exactly is PFAS?

Sabrina Hilbt: PFAS compounds are known as perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances and are often referred to as “forever chemicals" because of their longevity. Chemically, the organic compounds consist of carbon chains of various lengths in which the hydrogen atoms are completely (perfluorinated) or partially (polyfluorinated) replaced by fluorine atoms. This is a group of substances that includes about 10,000 individual substances.

Very common and wellknown are fluoropolymers. They are often used due to their unique properties such as protection from corrosion, heat, chemical attacks, wear or water.

// There is no immediate solution and no blueprint for everybody as it strongly depends on the portfolio of a coating company or tier supplier and the industry that is served //

Dec ‘26: Final proposal for EU commission

Dec ‘27: decision of EU comm & member states

Jul ‘29: end of 18 month transition period*

EiF PFAS restriction

*+5 / +12 years derogation

What is the scope of the potential ban?

The ECHA (European Chemical Agency) defines the chemical scope of the restriction proposal as: “Any substance that contains at least one fully fluorinated methyl (CF3) or methylene (CF2) carbon atom (without any H/Cl/Br/I attached to it).”

This covers the manufacture, placing on the market, as well as the use of PFAS as such and as constituents in other substances, in mixtures and in articles above a certain concentration and makes it thus a complete, thorough ban. In the first view it is limited to Europe, but as supply chains are global, this potential ban has global impacts.

How can the industry react?

You can see reaction from all extends: threats for the business till closure, plans to relocate outside of Europe, or struggles to replace PFAS as raw materials or process aids by raw materials without concern. Major industry associations point to the high number of jobs at stake and thus also a loss of GDP.

All reactions are understandable and according to the severity of effectiveness absolutely right. Yet, relocation is not always the solution as no PFAS in whatsoever form can ever enter the EU again. This step only makes sense when process chemicals are involved that are not part of the final product or if no part or final product will see European ground again.

The latest background document (issue 14) suggests three possible restriction options (RO) for the chemicals that fall under the definition above: there always is an 18month transition period after entry into force (RO1), and there are additional derogations of +5 or +12 years (RO2) or a timeunlimited derogation (RO3). What applies when is defined in the background document and was commented on by ECHA’s RAC (Risk Assessment Committee) and SEAC (SocialEconomic Assessment Committee) depending on known and available alternatives as well as possible cost scenarios for replacement. Both RAC and SEAC’s final conclusions have been published in March 2026 and SEAC’s opinion can be commented on the latest 60day consultation from 25 March – 25 May 2026. This consultation was open for everyone to comment on social economic impacts that would derive from the current scope of the background document.

And what’s the time frame?

The final draft, a combined document from RAC and SEAC, shall be handed over to the European Commission by end of 2026. The EU Commission has 12 months to decide on the document

and will then publish the new regulation, so the earliest date for entry into force is end of 2027. Then every application has minimum 18 month transition period which leads to the earliest sunset date of summer 2029. Application or industryrelated derogation might add another five or 12 years.

What does this mean for the coating industry?

The coating industry is a crosscutting industry as coatings are used for countless reasons and applications. This makes it so colorful, but in this context so hard to grasp because it is covered in different “sectors” that were identified by the ECHA, such as “Metal plating & manufacture of metal products”, “transport”, “lubricants”, “energy applications” and maybe more. There are different suggestions for derogation periods for the sectors named here and even within these sectors different derogations for applications. Therefore, the coating industry steers into a very complex, untransparent situation. Example: a coating company applies zinc flake coatings for different industries. He gets parts with coating requirements that he fulfils. The end use not necessarily known. If the coated part, e.g. a fastener, ends up in a car destined for Europe he can

// The coating industry is a cross-cutting industry as coatings are used for countless reasons and applications //

use a coating that contains PFAS most probably for another +12 years (suggested derogation for transport). He gets another fastener, destined for construction, he might use PFAS for another +5 years (suggested derogation for metal plating, if for zinc flake, unclear). This leads to a very uncomfortable situation as it requires in the worst case several different products for different end uses and the knowledge of the final applications. It will include reporting duties and management plans if PFAS are continued to be used within the derogation periods. All this can lead to significant cost increase (and thus price increase) as the ECHA requires documentation, as different products need to be stocked and used with higher downtime for changes and cleaning.

The PFAS ban time frame

COVER PROFILE

DÖRKEN COATINGS GMBH & CO.

Are there any solutions?

There is no immediate solution and no blueprint for everybody as it strongly depends on the portfolio of a coating company or tier supplier and the industry that is served. But the faster a switch to PFASfree products can be managed, the less costs for double storage and reporting duties apply.

Yet, the end market – meaning the OEMs and big tier suppliers – need to be ready for PFASfree and not allow those products (change specifications, drawings, delivery conditions), but also actively ask for them. As long as everything is allowed, the complexity cannot be reduced and the business volume for PFASfree is not attractive. We need a joint effort from the industry to go this way even in still uncertain conditions.

// The most important thing is, to make all industries aware of this situation //

There are PFAS-free materials, but are they really available?

The answer is: yes! Long before the current discussions on chemical legislation came up, Dörken started material scouting and fundamental research into replacing PTFE in its topcoats. The goal was to develop a tribological system that would replace PTFE in all functional properties – without compromising on safety, function or service life.

What started out as a technological vision soon developed into a structured innovation process: scouting, formulation development and comprehensive analysis to identify hidden PFAScontaining additives in preliminary products. The key: a holistic understanding of the system. Through the targeted development of new binders, tailormade fillers and synergistic pigment systems, Dörken has succeeded in creating highperformance alternatives that are even superior in many applications: zinc flake basecoats, solventbased and water

based topcoats with completely PFASfree formulations have been successfully developed, tested in series production and approved by major global OEMs and tier suppliers. Attention was paid not only to visible main components, but also to hidden PFAS substances in semifinished products such as wetting agents or additives. Thanks to close cooperation with suppliers and comprehensive analysis, these were also eliminated from the formulations.

The result is a system that meets the demanding tribological requirements of modern fastener connections with precise friction coefficient control in accordance with ISO 16047 and other most relevant OEM specifications, even under temperature stress. At the same time, the corrosion protection is maintained by zinccontaining and thus cathodically protective basecoats and topcoats.

To be more precise, the silver zinc flake system DELTAPROTEKT® KL 100 + DELTAPROTEKT® TC 502 has entered these specifications already: Volkswagen TL 245 t647, Volvo Cars VCS 5737,41, Jaguar LandRover SJ42. The black zinc flake system DÖRKEN® BASE 120 + DÖRKEN® TOP 500 black has been approved by Volvo Cars VCS 5737,41. These are just examples, many projects are currently running.

What must happen now?

The most important thing is, to make all industries aware of this situation. The automotive industry is quite advanced, but needs to continue specifying PFASfree products and then also require relevant quantities from the supplying industry.

Other industries might need more awareness of this topic and need to start finding suitable solutions. Coating manufacturers such as Dörken are ready for the change, the industry is about to be ready to follow.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN INDUSTRIAL VISION: BEYOND THE TREND

When applied with experience and technical judgement, AI is not an extra layer of complexity. It becomes a real advantage for quality control... Mario Brumini, Advanced Technologies & AI Specialist at Dimac, writes...

My name is Mario Brumini, I work for Dimac, an Italian company specialising in the design and production of Automatic SPC & 100% Sorting Systems for quality control of metal parts, where I hold the role of Advanced Technologies & AI Specialist.

When people talk about artificial intelligence in industrial vision, the discussion often becomes too generic. In practice, the real value of AI does not come from following a trend, but from knowing exactly where it makes sense and where it does not.

This is the approach that I bring to the development of vision solutions at Dimac. My work starts from the inspection problem itself: the defect to detect, the variability of the part, the production speed, the required reliability, and the real operating conditions on the machine.

Only after that comes the choice of technology. In many cases, traditional machine vision remains the best solution. In others, AI becomes essential, especially when defects are too

Mario Brumini – Advanced Technologies & AI Specialist at Dimac
// The real value of AI does not come from following a trend, but from knowing exactly where it makes sense and where it does not //

variable, too subtle or too dependent on appearance to be described by fixed rules alone.

For this reason, the approach is not tied to a single tool or model. Depending on the application, I may use structured vision pipelines or advanced neural network based methods for classification and analysis, always selecting the most effective strategy for the specific inspection challenge.

What matters is not the label of the technology, but the ability to turn it into a robust industrial solution. In a real production environment, the goal is not simply to detect more defects, but to achieve stability, repeatability, manageable training, maintainability and reliable integration with the machine.

This practical vision reflects a broader idea behind the new generation of Dimac systems: artificial intelligence should not be treated as a slogan, but as a concrete engineering tool. When applied with experience and technical judgement, AI is not an extra layer of complexity. It becomes a real advantage for quality control.

In conclusion, AI should not be viewed as a magic wand that solves everything, but rather as an indispensable tool for improving the efficiency and accuracy of fastener inspection.

Thanks to its ability to analyse large amounts of data and identify patterns invisible to the human eye, it can reduce errors, increase inspection speed, and optimise production processes. However, for it to be truly effective, constant refinement of models and datasets is necessary – a task I have been pursuing for several years and will continue to develop in the future.

As technology advances, the role of AI will become increasingly central, but human input will remain essential for interpreting results and making strategic decisions.

TRIAL SEES AI BOOST 67% RESPONSE TIME FOR MACHINE TOOL BUSINESS

Grappling with the potentials of what Artificial Intelligence could do for your business? A collaborative project has been working on trials with companies in the engineering and manufacturing sectors…

Colchester Machine Tool Solutions, surface coating business Poeton Industries and CNC specialist Star Micronics have taken part in a collaborative generative AI trial to explore the measurable operational improvements and clear commercial impacts.

The trial saw positive results, with response time to customer enquiries improved by two thirds.

Over the past year, Instro AI Solutions worked with AMRC Cymru, part of the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, on the value trials. Each programme was designed around defined business outcomes with results reviewed alongside AMRC Cymru to validate outcomes.

The trial results included:

• Colchester Machine Tool Solutions saw 67.3% faster technical query response times, reducing average response time from 5.5 minutes to 1.8 minutes

• Poeton Industries saw 4065% reduction in first response times for technical and commercial enquiries. Manual effort associated with triaging and drafting responses to customer enquiries was also reduced 2035%

• Star Micronics saw 45% faster engineering decision making during technical support tasks

Machine tool enquiry turnaround time

At Colchester Machine Tool Solutions, engineers tested the system while performing representative service and maintenance tasks for CNC and manual combination lathes. Average time to locate and respond to technical information fell from 5.5 minutes to 1.8 minutes, demonstrating how AI assisted knowledge access can accelerate routine engineering decisions.

Handling growing volumes of customer enquiries

At Poeton Industries, a UK independent surface treatment specialist, the focus was improving response times for high volumes of customer enquiries. Poeton Industries handle up to 4,000 customer emails per month and receive around 1,400 RFQs each year enquiring how surface processes should be performed. Instro was configured to analyse incoming enquiries, surface relevant knowledge and generate draft responses for review.

Lee Mason, Group Digital Transformation Manager at Poeton, says: “Phase 1 showed strong early value, especially in faster, more consistent technical responses, and the tool was well received by our teams. Phase 2 will scale that progress, deepen the use cases, and test how it embeds into daily operations. We’re pleased to continue the partnership.”

1,222 engineer interactions, 25 hours saved across international technical teams

Engineers at Star Micronics, which operates across Great Britain, Germany and Switzerland, used the system 1,222 times during the trial while diagnosing alarm codes and locating technical information across manuals and service records. Engineers achieved 44.6% faster decision making compared with manual methods.

Unlocking the data challenge

Across all trial participants a consistent insight emerged. The greatest limiting factor was not the AI technology itself but the fragmented nature of manufacturing data accumulated over many years across documents, systems and service records.

Instro can be configured to analyse vast numbers of incoming enquiries, surface relevant knowledge and generate draft responses for review

Instro’s automated content ingestion engine draws information from multiple systems and formats – including hardtoread PDFs – standardises terminology, identifies authoritative sources and flags outdated or conflicting material. This creates a structured knowledge layer that enables AIassisted search, insight and workflow automation without requiring extensive data preparation projects.

“These proofofvalue trials acted as the ground truth in witnessing the impact of adopting generative AI technologies, filtering out the noise and hype we experience in society today,” says Pritesh Patel, Industrial Digitalisation Technical Lead at AMRC Cymru. “It provided manufacturers with an understanding of how AI works under the hood. The trials

showed that while the impact of generative AI is massive, the real challenge lies in the 'reality of data.' The biggest hurdle that manufacturers face is not utilising AI, but the fragmented legacy data that they have carried for decades. By properly organising this knowledge, generative AI systems such as Instro AI provides engineers with more time to focus on valueadded tasks whilst ensuring that they remain as the final decisionmakers in an AIassisted workflow.”

Phil Sanders, Commercial Director at Instro AI Solutions, says: “These outcomes demonstrate how generative AI is moving beyond experimentation and delivering measurable operational improvements across engineering support, enquiry handling and technical decision making for organisations of all sizes. Over the years, even small companies can generate huge volumes of data and expertise that becomes locked away. We help them put that knowledge to work quickly.”

Instro AI said it delivers a sectorcustomisable generative AI solution, designed to transform how knowledge is accessed and applied across an organisation by staff, partners and customers. The AI solution automatically ingests complex documentation including technical documents, manuals, training materials, customer records, process guides, compliance information to provide instant, accurate, contextaware responses to everyday operational and commercial questions. Unlike traditional search or chatbot tools, Instro interprets complex queries, summarises detailed documents, signposts key information sources and connects to live systems, CSV files and databases, delivering natural language answers tailored to an organisation’s specific workflows and user roles.

IEFFICIENCY THROUGH FLEXIBILITY: THE NEW HAZET “2 IN 1 SYSTEM”

HAZET has a new way to simplify life for those who use impact sockets, with a clever two-drive-sizes-in-one system...

n everyday workshop life, one thing counts above all else: being able to work efficiently. HAZET, the Remscheidbased manufacturer of premium quality hand tools and workshop equipment, has developed its “2 in 1 SYSTEM”, a solution that significantly simplifies the use of impact sockets. The basis for this is the 41piece set (163612/40) which combines two drive sizes in one system, pitched as making everyday work noticeably easier.

More options with less effort

The core of the system is the combination of a ½” direct drive and a ¾” adapter. Many jobs can be carried out with a practical ½” cordless or pneumatic impact wrench, which makes work more convenient. However, if higher torques are required, the same socket can be used with a ¾” impact wrench using the allnew 1003S2 quickcoupler impact adapter developed by HAZET. This has practical advantages, namely lower acquisition costs: it is no longer necessary to keep two sockets for different drive sizes and you always have reliable power transmission: the 1003S2 quickcoupler has a 24 mm inside hexagon, which can transmit higher torques than conventional reducers. The larger crosssection ensures stability and a longlasting connection.

The 1003S-2 quick-coupler impact adapter in detail

The new 1003S2 impact adapter is the central connecting element in the practical “2in1 system”. Compared to the previous model, the locking mechanism has been completely redesigned. Instead of a locking mechanism with a pin and oring, the adapter now has an integrated locking ball. The socket engages by simply pulling down the sleeve and is then held securely by the three internal balls. This saves time and significantly simplifies handling, especially when tools need to be changed frequently.

The system is compatible with a wide range of impact wrench sockets, making it suitable for a broad range of applications

The core of the 41-piece set is a 1/2” direct drive and a 3/4” adapter

Wide range of applications

The system is compatible with a wide range of impact wrench sockets. This makes it suitable for a wide range of applications – from car and van maintenance to agricultural machinery and all kinds of industrial applications.

In addition to the 41piece set 163612/40 in a 2/3+ soft foam insert, HAZET also offers a more compact version with the 24piece set 163570/24 in a 1/3+ insert.

The threepiece ½” set 903SLG6/3 with plasticcoated sockets in sizes 17, 19 and 21 mm (already included in the impact socket set 163612/40) is suitable for protecting sensitive surfaces, such as lightalloy rims.

Supplementary adapter solutions

For users who already own various HAZET sockets, the tool

specialist offers its 1003S/4 adapter set, which allows the various ½”, ¾” and 1” drive sizes to be flexibly combined or expanded. To achieve this, the square of the insert adapter has been fitted with a ball so that the sockets are held independently and no additional locking elements are required.

Further information on the tools manufactured in Germany can be found in the current HAZET promotional brochure “Special worldwide 2026”, online at www.hazet.de or at specialist retailers.

NORD-LOCK EXPANDS RANGE DUE TO GROWING DEMAND

Nord-Locks’ X-series range expands with seven additions, while its wedge-locking washers were recently installed in a copper mine in Chile…

The company says the expansion has been driven by increasing demand for the Xseries

NordLock Group has launched seven new sizes in its Xseries range, designed to secure critical joints in applications operating under extreme conditions.

The company states that the expansion responds to growing market demand for the Xseries, which now includes the new sizes NLX20sp, NLX22 (7/8”), NLX22sp (7/8”sp), NLX24, NLX24sp, NLX27 and NLX27sp.

The Xseries combines the proven wedgelocking technology of original NordLock® washers with compensation for settlement, reliably securing bolted connections in the toughest environments. This design allows the Xseries to secure bolted joints against thermal cycling, relaxation of soft metals and composites, and loosening caused by assemblies with multiple clamped components.

These scenarios are common in demanding industries such as mining, railways, logistics and the energy sector.

“The extended Xseries range marks a significant step in strengthening NordLock’s offering for demanding applications across multiple industries,” says Graham Souter, Vice President and Head of Business Unit at NordLock Group. “We recognise rising market demands and deliver highperformance bolting solutions in response, backed by rigorous testing and certified approvals.”

Last year, NordLock Xseries washers became the first of their kind to be granted CE marking. This certification is

verified by an independent thirdparty body and requires extensive technical testing to demonstrate consistent performance and reliability.

In addition, NordLock Group’s wedgelocking washers were implemented at a copper mine in northern Chile.

Located in the Atacama Desert, the Spence copper mine has an annual output of just over a quarter of a billion tonnes. Like many modern mines, Spence processes minerals onsite and uses a large semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill to break up large pieces of ore. The SAG mill is powered by a gearless mill drive (GMD) system mounted directly to the mill’s shell. GMDs deliver immense torque with mechanical simplicity but also generate extreme vibrations.

However, the GMD at Spence was vibrating intensely enough to continually loosen the bolts on its rotor cover, requiring frequent maintenance.

According to Andreina Pérez, Sales Engineer for NordLock in Latin America, loose bolting on vital machinery such as Spence’s GMD not only disrupts operations but also poses a risk to workers and the equipment itself.

Based on a distributor’s recommendation, Spence replaced all conventional washers on the GMD’s rotor cover, as well as those on the stator generating the magnetic field to drive the GMD rotor, with NordLock® NL 64 steel washers. The wedgelocking design maintains clamp force to secure bolted joints against unintentional loosening, while the steel composition provides additional durability and corrosion resistance.

“Since installation, we have had no issues with bolt loosening, which has significantly improved equipment operation and safety,” says a spokesperson for Spence.

Pérez adds that NordLock’s washers are also suitable for nonmining sectors.

“The fact that the washer was a solution proves its effectiveness and reliability. There is no single application and no single industry for it. It is a product that will also work in other industries where requirements are less demanding,” she comments.

GÜDE: NEW CERTIFICATIONS, STANDARDS AND SHOWS

Güde achieved certification and integrated British Standards last year, in addition to customer outreach by participating in several shows…

Güde GmbH has shared multiple business updates and developments. Last year, the company expanded its production capacity for superstructure spring washers, including ULS washers. It also broadened its technical scope by integrating British Standards (BS1802, BS4464) and investing in new machinery.

This move caters to UK customers seeking suppliers aligned with domestic specifications, the company highlights.

Another achievement in 2025 was securing HPQ certification from Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s national railway company. Güde explains that this quality seal is a prerequisite for supplying safetycritical components to the operator and represents a major step in its longterm rail strategy. The certification also strengthens the

company’s credibility in a sector where reliability and compliance are nonnegotiable.

In addition to the certification from Deutsche Bahn, Güde’s involvement in the railway sector was demonstrated through Egypt’s 2,000 km highspeed rail project. With the first sections completed and Siemens delivering the initial trains, Güde’s safety components are being used in this rail infrastructure programme.

Despite a challenging economic environment, Güde achieved a 3% increase in sales in 2025, supported by strong customer partnerships and stable demand.

THE RIGHT THREAD

Built for automated and in-die inspection applications, Kaman Measuring’s ThreadChecker offers reliable thread detection with configurable outputs and application-specific probe options…

Kaman Measuring has launched the improved ThreadChecker™, a noncontact applicationspecific sensor designed to verify thread presence.

The ThreadChecker provides rugged and reliable verification of thread presence or absence in nearly any electrically conductive material. As a teachable eddy current inspection tool, it is widely used for thread detection, material sorting, plating detection and identifying the absence of heat treatment. The system can detect physical property differences related to material conductivity.

The ThreadChecker is suitable for automated inspection processes in the fastener industry. Consisting of a single electronics module compatible with any probe and material combination, it can inspect threads regardless of part cleanliness, helping to reduce implementation costs.

Built around Kaman’s eddy current technology, the ThreadChecker is specifically designed for indie use. It features four internal probes ranging from 4mm to 10mm and two external probes in 6mm and 8mm sizes. Available with a DIN rail mounting option, the system is CEcompliant and features IP67rated probes and electronics.

The ThreadChecker is available with both switched and analogue outputs. With the switched output option, the sensor can be wired to a PLC or other controller programmed to trigger an alarm when no thread is detected. Alternatively, users can monitor the analogue voltage and programme the PLC or control device with applicationspecific limits.

To teach the ThreadChecker, the operator first presses the teach pushbutton with the probe in air, allowing the electronics to optimise the settings for the specific probe. The probe is then inserted into both a threaded hole and an unthreaded hole, with the teach pushbutton pressed each time. Based on these readings, the electronics establish a voltage window for the threaded hole, enabling the system to trigger the “thread” indicator when threads are detected.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE COOLANT

OEMETA’s ESTRAMET S95 is formulated to deliver strong lubricity, reduced tool wear and improved operational efficiency while remaining free from mineral oil and other regulated substances…

OESTRAMET S95 is free from mineral oil, boron, formaldehyde, fungicides and active sulphur

EMETA has launched ESTRAMET S95, a metalworking coolant based on synthetic ester technology for the production of aerospace, automotive and medical components.

Suitable for demanding machining operations on highalloy steels, stainless steels and alloys such as titanium and Inconel, ESTRAMET S95 can be used in applications including turning, milling, drilling, threading, honing and grinding.

Traditional mineral oilfree coolants, particularly polymerbased alternatives, often struggle to match the lubricity and tool life performance of conventional products. According to OEMETA, ESTRAMET S95 delivers superior lubricity even at lower oil concentrations thanks to its ester oil base.

The coolant also offers several operational benefits for manufacturers. Its low oil content significantly reduces dragout and carryout on components, helping to lower consumption rates and extend sump life.

With carbide prices rising and cutting tool costs increasing, ESTRAMET S95’s ester technology is designed to reduce tool wear, enabling manufacturers to achieve longterm cost savings.

Completely free from mineral oil, boron, formaldehyde, fungicides and active sulphur, ESTRAMET S95 also provides

immediate visual feedback on sump condition and contamination levels, simplifying maintenance monitoring. Its pH value of 9.3 at a 5% concentration provides strong corrosion protection, with corrosion test results meeting the K0 4.0 classification under DIN 51 360/2.

Another feature is its high washing performance. Components emerge from machine tools noticeably cleaner than with conventional coolants, often removing the need for additional washing cycles. This eliminates an extra production step, reducing both cycle time and environmental impact.

The coolant also offers strong tramp oil rejection characteristics. Its synthetic ester emulsifiers effectively separate hydraulic oils that enter coolant systems, helping to prevent the smoking and burning issues associated with conventional coolants that have poor tramp oil rejection.

ESTRAMET S95 is supplied as a concentrate with a density of 984kg/m³ and a kinematic viscosity of 51mm²/s at 40°C. The recommended concentration range of 5% to 15% allows manufacturers to optimise performance for specific applications, with higher concentrations available for more demanding operations.

In the world of contemporary construction, every detail contributes to the actual and perceived quality of a building.

Fastening systems are no exception; once purely functional elements, they are increasingly meeting aesthetic requirements as well. In particular, when it comes to sheet metal – a key material used in roofing, façades, guttering and cladding systems – fastening becomes an integral part of both exterior and interior design

It is within this context that Rivit operates – an Italian company that has been a significant international player in the sector for over 50 years. Its range of products for the construction industry demonstrates how technical functionality and aesthetics can coexist harmoniously, offering solutions that guarantee reliability and visual consistency.

Among the company’s solutions, AFT standard blind rivets are a triedandtested choice for fastening thin sheet metal, metal profiles and components such as gutters and panels. Their ease of installation and the ability to work with access from a single side make them particularly popular on construction sites, where speed and reliability are key factors. At the same time, they guarantee a consistent seal and high durability over time, even in variable environmental and weather conditions.

Alongside the technical aspect, the aesthetic aspect is also becoming increasingly important: metal surfaces, which are often left exposed, require fasteners that blend in visually with the structure. This is where AFTC coloured rivets come in, designed to complement the finishes of painted sheet metal. The availability from stock of various standard shades such as white, grey, brown, green, blue and red or, on request, all colours from the RAL chart, allows you to choose a colour identical to that of the intended substrate, reducing the visual impact of the fastener and contributing to a cleaner, more uniform appearance of the surfaces.

Once purely functional, fastening systems increasing meet aesthetic requirements

A further consideration concerns the consistency of the metal alloy used, which is particularly crucial in applications involving copper. In such cases, the use of specific RFT copper rivets prevents contact between dissimilar metals, avoiding undesirable effects and ensuring aesthetic continuity over time. This is particularly important for elements such as gutters, downpipes, flashings and cladding made from this material, where copper becomes a distinctive feature of the architectural design.

In this way, the fastening system enhances the details by offering a choice of materials, finishes and solutions, enabling architects and designers to design even the smallest component to complement the overall design, transforming the rivet into a discreet yet essential ally of architectural aesthetics.

A GUIDE TO TITANIUM FASTENERS AND FIXINGS

Patrick Faulkner, Lead Engineer at Accu, looks at why titanium is an increasingly popular choice for fasteners and fixings across a range of applications, including for its visual appearance…

Titanium is an exotic silvercoloured metal that has a unique combination of mechanical, chemical and physical properties. Number 22 on the periodic table, it forms naturally on Earth and is the ninth most abundant element. It was not used for industrial purposes until the 20th Century.

Offering exceptionally high mechanical performance, titanium is popular for medium to high stress applications, where weight and durability are crucial. Titanium naturally forms a protective stable oxide layer, which creates a material highly resistant to rust and degradation from salt water, chlorine solutions and some industrial chemicals.

Why choose titanium fasteners?

While titanium can be more costly, it is 45% lighter than steel and up to four times stronger than stainless steel fasteners. This makes titanium fasteners a great choice for applications where weight reduction is important without compromising on mechanical strength.

With a high melting point of 1,600°C, titanium fasteners and fixings maintain their structural integrity and mechanical properties in highheat applications, such as jet engines and exhaust systems.

They are also safe to use in medical applications as titanium is nontoxic. The biocompatibility of titanium means fasteners are ideal for securing prosthetics and implants without causing a reaction.

With nonmagnetic properties, titanium fasteners are wellsuited for use in electronic systems where magnetic interference needs to be kept to a minimum.

Titanium fasteners are a great choice for projects where visual appearance is important. With a clean, highend finish, titanium fasteners and fixings provide a more refined and modern look. As titanium is naturally corrosionresistant, it

Titanium is naturally corrosion-resistant, so maintains its appearance over time, making it ideal for applications where performance and presentation matter

can maintain its appearance over time without tarnishing or rusting, making it ideal for applications where both performance and presentation matter.

Titanium grades for fasteners and fixings

Understanding the different grades of titanium is essential when selecting fasteners and fixings for demanding applications, as different grades can significantly affect performance.

Grades 1 to 4 are known as Commercially Pure (CP) titanium, meaning they contain minimal amounts of alloying elements, whereas grades five and above are known as titanium alloys.

Grade 2 is the most commonly used commercial titanium for generalpurpose engineering applications because it strikes a balance between strength, formability and corrosion resistance. Containing a minimum of 99% titanium, Grade 2 titanium fasteners are widely used in chemical environments due to their excellent resistance to corrosion and environmental degradation.

The most commonly used titanium alloy for highperformance fasteners is grade 5 because it combines mechanical strength, fatigue resistance and low weight. Grade 5 titanium fasteners contain 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium and are suitable for highperformance applications where fasteners and fixings need to maintain integrity under temperatures reaching over 316°C. Grade 5 titanium socket cap crews and titanium washers are typically used in the medical industry for instruments, prosthetics and implants.

By understanding the key properties, different grades and appropriate applications of titanium fasteners, engineers and designers can make informed decisions that elevate the performance and longevity of their projects.”

“THE BEST FASTENER IS INVISIBLE”

The FHead flush fastener was designed to eliminate compromises for environments and in terms of visual precision

FLooks have not always been top of the priority list when it comes to nuts, bolts and screws, but Flush has been specialising in the area with its clever F-Head design…

lush Fasteners was established in 2022 with an aim of producing fastening solutions that meet the demands of critical environments while also –perhaps a little unusually for the industry historically –maintain clean, refined aesthetics.

The brand also identified the challenge that traditional screws heads have – in that they’re difficult to clean, including in environments where cleanliness is important.

The FHead ™ flush fastener was designed to eliminate compromises for such environments and in terms of visual precision. Manufactured from 316 stainless steel, it features a precisionengineered plunger mechanism that conceals the drive beneath a continuous surface, allowing tool access when needed, and returns to a flush position after use. Flush explained: “With a clearance of less that six microns, the result is a fastening solution that is functional and visually uninterrupted.

“We do not believe fasteners should be an afterthought. Every detail, from material selection to geometry, is engineered to integrate seamlessly into the environments they serve. Whether the priority is cleanability, durability, or design, our focus remains the same: precision without compromise.”

Adhering to the principle that “the best fastener is invisible”, Flush is focused on full traceability and quality, while every fastener is handinspected before it leaves the floor.

Flush Fasteners offers two standard countersunk lines: metric and imperial. Everything else is engineered to specification.

The business engaged in a study that strongly indicated that flush fasteners can be disinfected much more efficiently than the standard slotted fasteners, preventing bacteria growth by 98% over standard head screws.

MOUNTING SOLUTIONS FOR PITCHED ROOF SOLAR SYSTEMS

Eurotec covers both classic on-roof mounting and insertion systems, as many solar PV installations are mounted on pitched roofs…

Solar installations on pitched roofs are now standard in residential and commercial construction and are increasingly used to generate sustainable electricity. However, pitched roofs differ not only in their slope but also in the type of roof covering. These include tiled roofs, beavertail tile roofs and slate roofs, each of which imposes different requirements on fastening the substructure.

Compared to flat roofs, installing solar systems on pitched roofs is structurally more demanding and requires more detailed planning. Key factors include secure load transfer into the roof structure, longterm watertightness, adaptability to different structural roof conditions and efficient installation under varying site conditions.

For this reason, it is particularly important to choose a mounting system that is not only structurally sound but also flexible and practical in application.

Eurotec offers a range of solutions for pitched roofs, including classic onroof mounting and insertion systems.

The FIXFIT fastening system is designed for classic onroof installation on pitched roofs. It provides the basis for a durable and installationfriendly setup of solar systems on sloped roofs.

The system is based on roof hooks in various sizes, which are mechanically secured to the loadbearing roof structure (counter battens attached to rafters). Mounting rails are then placed onto these hooks and fixed with fastening screws, forming the support structure for the individual solar modules. The modules are then secured using the appropriate FASTFIX module clamps.

A key advantage of the FIXFIT system lies in its practical design. The roof hooks can be individually adjusted in height and position via slotted holes, allowing any unevenness in the roof to be compensated. Different hook variants are also available to meet varying load requirements and roof constructions.

In addition to traditional onroof mounting, Eurotec also offers LayTec, an insertion system for pitched roofs, particularly suited to projects where visual appearance is as important as technical performance.

Unlike onroof systems, the solar modules in the LayTec insertion system are not clamped onto rails but are inserted sequentially into profiles without additional installation steps. This creates a flush, uniform module surface that is both visually appealing and structurally stable over the long term. The absence of visible module clamps results in a clean and consistent roof appearance.

SAFE SOLAR PV INSTALLATION

fischer offers a range of mechanical and chemical fixing systems designed to provide secure, application-specific anchoring for mini solar PV systems in concrete, masonry and timber…

As more households adopt mini solar PV systems to generate electricity, selecting the right fastening solutions has become increasingly important. In response to growing demand, fischer offers a range of products designed to securely install and support these systems.

Many solar PV units can be mounted easily onto railings using brackets. However, wall or ground installations typically require drilling, anchoring and screwing. In such cases, it is essential to choose fasteners suited to the substrate, as well as the system’s weight and size, while also taking into account manufacturer specifications and environmental factors such as wind and snow loads.

For concrete applications, bolt anchors such as the stainless steel fischer FAZ II Plus offer high tensile strength and versatile performance. The FAZ II Plus enables faster and easier installation by eliminating drill hole cleaning for sizes M8–M24. Its proven expansion clip securely transfers loads into the concrete, delivering high load capacity and immediate loadability, even in dynamic applications.

Chemical solutions such as the fischer FIS V Plus or fischer FIS V Zero injection mortars are also the right choice, as they provide high loadbearing capacity, low edge distances and expansion pressurefree installation.

The FIS V Plus is the universal allrounder for demanding environments. The styrenefree vinyl ester hybrid mortar with its numerous fixing elements is approved for fixing in cracked

Generating electricity from a balcony-mounted solar system can help reduce energy costs while conserving natural resources

and noncracked concrete as well as in masonry. However, the injection mortar is also used with the approved system components for rebar connections, the fischer remedial wall tie VBS 8, the fischer weather facing wall tie FWS II and the standoff installation system TherMax II.

FIS V Zero is approved for fixings in cracked and noncracked concrete, masonry and for postinstalled rebar connections. Special applications, such as anchoring in waterfilled boreholes, as well as installation at temperatures from10 to 40°C, are also assessed in the ETA approval and offer maximum flexibility under any weather conditions.

When mounting a mini PV system to a solid timber structure, wood screws such as the fischer PowerFast II in A2 or A4 stainless steel are generally sufficient

Injection systems are also suitable for solid brick, perforated brick and aerated concrete – a sieve sleeve, such as FIS H K, ensures even mortar distribution in perforated brick.

In loadbearing wood, wood screws, such as fischer PowerFast II made of A2 or A4 stainless steel, are usually sufficient. And, crucially for outdoor use, screws and steel components should be made of stainless steel, the brand advises.

SECURELY CONNECTING WOOD TO CONCRETE

Modern timber construction places high demands on fastening technology: high tensile and shear forces must be transferred safely, while simple installation and standard-compliant verification are essential. HECO-Schrauben’s MULTIMONTI-TimberConnect – now with CE marking – offers a sophisticated solution for the structural fastening of timber fixtures to concrete…

Two threads, one solution

The MULTIMONTITimberConnect (MMSTC) sole plate anchor innovatively combines the patented MULTIMONTI concrete thread with a HECO wood thread. This enables the MMSTC to be used for the simple and secure fastening of timber fixtures to concrete, as well as for fastening sole plates to concrete. It combines all the advantages of the concrete thread: no torque control, small edge distances and no curing times.

Efficient installation with a system

A particular advantage of the MMSTC is its installation: the timber fixture and the substrate are drilled in a single step, after which the sole plate anchor is set mechanically using the specially designed HECO setting tool. A scale and adjustable stop enable precise setting depth – even with varying component thicknesses – and ensure secure, reproducible installation. At the same time, the small screw head offers a practical advantage for the installer: it can be countersunk into the wood, so that one screw anchor is sufficient for different wood thicknesses. The invisible fastening ensures a clean appearance and also offers fire protection advantages, ideal for loadbearing timber structures.

The combination of concrete and wood threads allows significantly higher tensile and shear loads, regardless of the thickness of the attachment. Compared to conventional solutions such as heavyduty anchors, threaded rods or composite anchors, significantly higher shear forces can be transferred – for stable, durable connections in timber construction.

Planning reliability at European level

Newly included in the European Technical Assessment ETA05/0010, the MMSTC has been awarded CE marking and meets the latest European requirements. The concrete thread is verified in accordance with ETA05/0010, while the wooden attachment is still designed on the basis of national approval Z21.11879. HECO thus underlines its commitment to providing highperformance, practical fastening solutions for modern timber construction.

KNOWLEDGE AND CUSTOMER CONFIDENCE

GOING BEYOND COMPLIANCE TO

STRENGTHEN

For contractors, ETA certification provides reassurance that the anchoring systems will perform consistently, reducing risk

ETAs AND ACCREDITATIONS

The European Technical Assessment (ETA) certificates supporting EJOT UK’s safety critical anchors, through-bolts and concrete screws are not only key to confirming their performance, but the cornerstone of the company’s product development programme and maximising enduser confidence. James Uttley, one of EJOT UK’s anchoring specialists, explains why…

It could be argued that compliance in the construction industry is sometimes perceived as a necessary burden –something that must be achieved to meet regulatory obligations rather than as a positive driver of innovation.

However, taking this view risks overlooking one of compliance’s most valuable outcomes – knowledge building. Beyond meeting regulatory requirements, the assessment and approval process creates knowledge – knowledge that directly supports better product design, improved performance and greater confidence for specifiers, engineers and contractors.

This is why EJOT invests heavily in ensuring its anchoring solutions – including LIEBIG heavyduty mechanical anchors, throughbolts, resin anchors and concrete screws – are supported by comprehensive ETAs. Alongside other respected approvals such as UK Technical Assessments (UKTAs) and FM Approvals, ETAs are not simply proof of conformity. They are a robust mechanism for validating theoretical design assumptions and substantiating internal testing through independent, externally verified assessment.

Crucially, the ETA process provides manufacturers with deeper insight into how products behave in realworld conditions. It enables a thorough understanding to be developed of performance limits, load behaviour and longterm reliability when installed in concrete or masonry substrates. This creates valuable knowledge, enabling manufacturers to refine designs, strengthen product performance and provide clearer, more reliable guidance to customers.

Every test undertaken and every approval achieved contributes to demonstrating that a product is fit for its intended purpose. Performance is not assumed, but proven. For consulting engineers and specifiers, this creates a dependable foundation for informed decisionmaking during the design stage. And for contractors, OEMs and installers, ETA certification provides reassurance that

the anchoring systems they rely on will perform consistently, reducing risk and helping to meet client expectations.

Importantly, compliance is not a oneoff exercise – maintaining approvals is an ongoing commitment, and that has the benefits of generating a continuous flow of data. Over time, EJOT’s internal and external testing programmes have produced a substantial body of performance information, drawn from formal approvals, internal development projects and applicationspecific testing from roofing and façades to major civil engineering projects.

This accumulated data provides a powerful resource, allowing performance to be benchmarked, product enhancements to be validated and solutions to be refined based on real evidence. It also enables faster and more informed responses to customer challenges. For example, when a customer is faced with unusual project requirements, EJOT can often draw on existing test results to provide guidance quickly, saving time and reducing uncertainty without the need to investigate from scratch.

Finally, EJOT’s ongoing engagement in compliance gives our team early visibility on future regulatory developments. Building regulations and performance standards are constantly evolving, driven by stricter safety expectations, sustainability requirements and to apply technical advancements. Staying actively involved in compliance processes, therefore, means that EJOT is well placed to anticipate these changes and develop products that meet not only today’s standards, but tomorrow’s demands.

All this adds up to ETAs and approvals doing far more than demonstrating compliance – they build knowledge, competence and lasting customer confidence.

ETA-CERTIFIED FASTENING SOLUTIONS FROM EUROTEC FOR SAFETY AND RELIABILITY

With over 25 years of experience, Eurotec offers a wide range of fastening solutions with a strong focus on modern timber construction. Here, Eurotec discusses its certified ranges…

In the European construction industry, European Technical Assessments (ETA) and comparable certifications are essential for ensuring compliance with standards and design reliability. Eurotec GmbH consistently aligns its fastening solutions with these requirements and provides tested and reliable performance data for demanding applications.

An ETA provides independently tested performance values based on European Assessment Documents (EADs). This is particularly relevant for fasteners, as their behaviour cannot always be fully covered by harmonised standards. For designers and structural engineers, ETAcertified products offer a reliable basis for structural analysis in accordance with the Eurocodes and the relevant national regulations.

One example of this is ETA11/0024, which defines key performance characteristics for timber construction screws, such as Eurotec’s Konstrux fully threaded screws. Among other things, it regulates their use in loadbearing timbertotimber and timbertosteel connections, specifies characteristic loadbearing capacity values (e.g. pullthrough capacity, tensile and shear capacity) and describes the design in accordance with Eurocode 5. Furthermore, it contains clear guidelines on installation conditions, spacing and permissible service classes.

Why ETA certification is crucial in load-bearing applications

The practical benefits are clear: certified performance values can be incorporated directly into the design, thereby reducing uncertainties. This saves both time and costs while also reducing liability risks. Noncertified products, on the other hand, often require additional verification or assessments, making both the design and construction phases more complex and timeconsuming.

With over 25 years of experience, Eurotec offers a wide range of fastening solutions with a strong focus on modern timber construction. A significant part of the product range, particularly timber construction screws and fasteners, holds ETA certification. Depending on the application, these prod

ucts are designed for service classes 1 to 3 and exhibit defined mechanical properties such as pullout resistance, tensile loadbearing capacity and other relevant performance characteristics. This enables precise structural analysis and reliable performance for individual construction projects. Furthermore, the portfolio includes certified solutions for other application areas, including concrete and masonry, as well as systems for roof, façade and solar applications. Across all product groups, the focus is on tested performance values that support safe and efficient construction processes.

Eurotec addresses these requirements by consistently relying on ETAcertified products and clearly traceable performance values. This makes technical properties transparent and applicable in accordance with standards, which becomes a decisive advantage for all project stakeholders. For planners, engineers and contractors, this means a high degree of safety and efficiency throughout all project phases. With this commitment, Eurotec supports the realisation of sustainable structures and makes an active contribution to the further development of modern timber construction.

GERMAN EFFICIENCY IN EVERY CAPSULE:

“HOW MKT’S VZ SYSTEM REDEFINES

CHEMICAL ANCHORING”

We

take a closer look at the German-made capsule anchor system delivering speed, reliability and clean installation for demanding construction environments worldwide…

It’s eight o’clock in the morning on a construction site somewhere along Germany’s vast Autobahn network. One of the many prestressed concrete bridges is being refurbished. A worker drives anchor rods into freshly drilled holes – one after another with steady precision. Just a few metres away, colleagues are already securing a heavy steel safety barrier. This smooth workflow is made possible by capsule anchors, a fastening solution that combines chemical performance with exceptional ease of installation.

All types of chemical anchoring systems – twocomponent adhesive plus steel anchor – have their merits. But capsule anchors offer several distinctive advantages over cartridge or bulk adhesive systems: fast and economical installation, minimal equipment, virtually no packaging waste, and zero material loss. A simple power tool is all that’s needed to drive the rod into the hole, crushing the glass capsule and mixing the adhesive components. The process is clean, controlled and works in all directions, even overhead.

While some once viewed capsule anchors as a technology with limited future potential, MKT MetallKunststoffTechnik GmbH & Co. KG saw things differently. At its laboratory and production facilities in Weilerbach, Germany, MKT began developing a new generation of capsule anchors. Numerous formulations were created, optimised and tested. After completing a rigorous independent testing programme, MKT launched its VZ capsule anchor system, certified with European Technical Assessment ETA20/0533 – and continues to invest in the product, its approvals and production capacity.

Capsule anchors serve a wide range of applications, particularly where small edge distances or tight anchor spacing are required, such as for sidemounted railings. “Our internally threaded version, the VZIG, paired with a screw, offers a clean and elegant finish when aesthetics matter,” explains Dr.Ing. Heiner Kruse, application engineer at MKT. He also supports customers in

MKT has been developing a new generation of capsule anchors

designing professional anchorage solutions using MKT’s specialised Anchor Design software. “Under reallife conditions, fast curing is a big advantage,” he adds. “The MKT VZ cures quickly – at 20°C it’s fully cured after only six minutes, even in wet concrete. The anchor can then be loaded immediately, meaning the steel fixture can be installed and torqued without delay.”

The VZ system’s versatility is another key strength. It supports installation temperatures from 20°C to +40°C, covers capsule sizes for M8 to M30 rods, as well as M6 to M24 internally threaded sleeves. It is available in zincplated, hotdip galvanized, A4 stainless steel, and HCR (high corrosion resistance) versions. The system is approved for cracked concrete and rated not only for static loads, but also for seismic and fire performance – making it suitable for critical infrastructure, industrial construction and largescale projects.

The defining benefit of capsule anchors remains the preportioned adhesive quantity in each capsule. This feature is especially valuable in serial installation, such as safety barriers or highbay warehouse racking, where it delivers considerable time savings. Installation can even be paused at any time –including after capsules have been inserted into the holes. Crews returning the next day simply resume work by driving the rods into the prepared boreholes.

“More than half of our production is exported,” says Export Manager Oliver Hoefli, “reaching customers as far away as Australia or Korea. Thanks to a 36month shelf life, long shipping routes nibbling away at usable life are not an issue for the MKT VZ. That’s a major advantage for international markets.” The results confirm his view: capsule anchors are one of MKT’s fastestgrowing product categories, and the company has recently commissioned another production line. On it, VZ capsules glide quickly along the conveyor – almost like an Autobahn of their own.

CONSTRUCTION PRODUCT REFORM: THE GROWING IMPORTANCE OF ETAS AND ACCREDITATION

As regulations continue to develop, the value of accreditation, transparency and technical integrity will grow, writes JCP Construction Products…

The UK construction industry is approaching a phase of substantial regulatory changes due to the Government’s Construction Products Reform White Paper. These reforms, initiated in response to the Grenfell Inquiry, are designed to enhance product safety, increase transparency, and create clear accountability throughout the entire supply chain.

The proposed framework centres on transitioning to a more comprehensive and stringent system. All construction products, regardless of whether they are currently subject to harmonised standards, will be regulated. For those with existing standards, compliance will still be validated through recognised methods like European Technical Assessments (ETAs). Meanwhile, products without such standards will be regulated under a new General Safety Requirement, which requires manufacturers to formally evaluate and demonstrate their products' safety prior to market release.

Additionally, testing, certification and product information are expected to become increasingly important. Increased oversight of conformity assessment bodies, stronger enforcement powers, and stricter standards for product data and marketing will promote a more transparent and responsible industry. At the same time, the adoption of digital product information and traceability will enable better decisionmaking and complement the broader “golden thread” of building safety.

For manufacturers and suppliers, these changes pose both

a challenge and an opportunity. Greater oversight will demand strong technical evidence, thorough documentation, and disciplined product claims. Simultaneously, these reforms will create a fair playing field, where quality, compliance and technical expertise are rightfully acknowledged.

JCP Construction Products clearly understands this direction. The company has consistently prioritised ETAs, thirdparty certifications and verified performance data as the core of its product range. This strategy helps engineers, contractors, and distributors trust the accuracy and consistency of information when choosing products for vital applications.

Importantly, JCP remains proactive in addressing the changing external environment. This involves continuous investment in testing, certification, technical support, and active engagement with industry groups and regulatory changes. By adjusting its internal processes to meet new regulatory standards, JCP is prepared to adapt to future requirements and continue providing customers with reliable, compliant solutions.

As regulations continue to develop, the value of accreditation, transparency and technical integrity will grow. Manufacturers that proactively adapt and integrate these elements into their processes will be the most capable of fostering a safer and more responsible construction industry.

MADE IN ITALY:

“PRECISION, QUALITY & A TRADITION OF ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE”

Viteria Fusani has plans to strengthen its role in the supply chain by providing innovative, high-quality fasteners and supporting customers with tailored solutions. Italy can maintain its global leadership by combining engineering excellence, innovation and a commitment to quality, it says...

Viteria Fusani supplies a wide range of fasteners, including standard and specialised items. Product quality is ensured through strict internal controls, certifications and testing. The business is currently exploring opportunities to expand the portfolio to serve emerging sectors and specialised applications. Current key markets include automotive, energy, pneumatics, electromechanical sectors, both in Italy and internationally.

Viteria Fusani says: “While these markets are dynamic and face challenges such as regulatory changes and increased competition, we see opportunities in customised solutions and highperformance fasteners.”

Made in Italy

The fastener manufacturer explains: “Made in Italy represents precision, quality and a long tradition of engineering excellence. At Viteria Fusani, our history has shaped a strong commitment to highquality production, continuous innovation, and engineering solutions that meet the most demanding standards. Manufacturing in Italy allows us to combine skills with advanced technologies, offering our customers reliable products with full traceability.

“Since 2024, we have invested in modern production machinery and expanded our R&D capabilities. These investments were made to increase effi

ciency, maintain product quality, and meet evolving customer demands. R&D is crucial for staying competitive, allowing us to develop the new projects of our clients and improve existing products. We have replaced some machinery with more productive, modern, and efficient technologies. We have also added a machine for assembling components onto screws and a machine for producing wire clamping screws for the electrical sector. We are also investing heavily in staff training on effective communication. During sessions with the instructor, employees are engaged in psychological and behavioral topics to better understand how to improve communication between individuals and across teams in different processes, while also feeling rewarded and satisfied with the work they do. It is indeed important to never lose sight of motivation, both in one’s professional work and personal life.”

Trends

Viteria Fusani picks out current trends in the Italian fastener industry such as increased demand for specialised fasteners and a strong focus on sustainability: “We are actively working to reduce environmental impact by using recyclable materials and ecofriendly coatings, and customers increasingly value these

efforts. Additionally, we provide valueadded services such as technical support, custom packaging and justintime delivery, driven by clients’ desire for more efficient and tailored solutions.”

CBAM Regulation

CBAM presents challenges but also opportunities, the business adds: “It encourages local sourcing and transparency in carbon emissions. As a steeldependent manufacturer, we are closely monitoring raw material prices and adjusting our sourcing strategies accordingly. We are preparing internally to handle reporting requirements efficiently and ensure compliance without compromising productivity. The audits for obtaining ISO 14001 certification are scheduled for Q2.”

Future

Looking ahead, the specialist says: “Manufacturing must continue to evolve with new technologies and sustainability practices. At Viteria Fusani, we aim to strengthen our role in the supply chain by providing innovative, highquality fasteners and supporting customers with tailored solutions. Italy can maintain its global leadership by combining engineering excellence, innovation and a commitment to quality.”

AFFORDABLE PERFORMANCE

With the RIV920 and RIV930, Rivit continues to offer high-performance, reliable and competitive solutions for fastening professionals.

ITALY TERRITORY FOCUS

INVESTING IN A TOUGH MARKET

Francesco Montanari, CEO of Rivit, provides a straight-talking appraisal of the state of the market to Torque Magazine...

Generally speaking, how’s business in the Italian fastener market right now?

The Italian fastener market is currently suffering from the high level of geopolitical uncertainty and manufacturing industry stagnation.

The continuous changes in the worldwide political scenario are forcing companies to postpone investments and this is adding to the already bad situation due to the stagnation of the manufacturing industry, especially in the automotive sector.

In addition to that, we are also experiencing a drop in the demand coming from the construction industry, mostly due to the end of government incentives.

So, I would say that the general situation is pretty bad and there is nothing that can give us any certainty about a future positive change.

Are there any particular sectors driving growth in Italy?

Only very few vertical niches are still

showing growth. The solar photovoltaic market is one of those, but currently we are seeing a shift from the roof installation to the ground ones (solar parks), which are less interesting for us, as they make less use of blind rivets. We are investing to explain to the installation companies that for those applications the use of lockbolts can provide a lot of advantages compared to the traditional bolt and screw, both for the speed of installation and for the antitheft intrinsic features of the lockbolts.

There are obviously yet more disruptive events occurring worldwide, affecting confidence and potentially inflation. Are there any specific challenges facing the Italian market at the moment, or are the challenges the same kind that we’re seeing across Europe and further afield?

I think that the challenges are the same we are seeing worldwide, where Europe is more affected due to its unclear geopolitical position and lack of a shared vision and

Italy is one of the weakest countries as we rely heavily on the manufacturing industry.

What are your expectations for the rest of the year in Italy?

If nothing changes in the worldwide scenario, I think that 2026 will show another drop in the global value of our industry. Rivit is trying to react to this trend with more commercial investments and the launch of new products.

Can you update us on recent investments and developments at Rivit?

This year Rivit is working mainly to renew our riveting tool range. We are investing both in the pneumatic and in the battery powered tools.

In particular for what concerns the pneumatic products, we are adding a new product line that we call “Smart”, to our traditional “Performance” products. The Smart line is dedicated to smaller businesses, less intensive applications and in general to those companies that are looking for good performance and quality, but at a more affordable price.

“THE

BEST TORQUE-EXPO TO DATE”

Following its highly anticipated return to the Telford International Centre, TorqueExpo 2026 once again proved why it is the definitive calendar event for the UK’s fastener, tool, and distribution industries.

The intensive, one-day B2B showcase brought together senior decision-makers, wholesalers, and independent distributors under one roof to talk strategy, explore supply chain solutions, and discover next-generation products...

EVENT SPONSORS:

TorqueExpo 2026 returned in May with increased exhibitor participation and higher visitor numbers, reinforcing its role as a major networking and business event for the UK fastener, fixing and industrial tooling sectors.

Hosted once again at the Telford International Centre, the latest edition brought together a wider mix of exhibitors compared with the 2024 event, alongside an expanded seminar programme focused on market developments, technical expertise and business strategy. The exhibition also featured the TorqueExpo Awards, celebrating innovation and achievements across the industry.

Organisers reported strong preevent registration figures, with visitor attendance also exceeding the previous edition. While the exhibition continues to primarily serve the UK market, the 2026 show also attracted a growing number of overseas attendees.

The exhibition floor featured established fastener distributors, fixing specialists, tooling suppliers and industrial manufacturers, as well as newer businesses looking to expand within the sector. Several recognised brands from the profes

sional tools market were also present throughout the venue.

TorqueExpo 2026 maintained its established oneday exhibition and evening networking format, which organisers said continued to appeal to companies seeking efficient networking opportunities without extended time away from daily operations. Attendees also responded positively to the event’s continued presence in Telford, a region closely associated with the UK fastener industry.

The seminar programme combined technical product discussions with broader analysis of economic conditions, sourcing trends, coatings technology, digitalisation and operational challenges affecting the sector. Presentations were delivered by senior representatives including Justin Parker, VP Strategic Sourcing at Optimas International; Mark Dorrington, Product Director at Galleon Fixings / Harrison & Clough; Sabrina Hilbt, Strategic Sales Manager at Dörken Coatings GmbH; Ethan Godden, Senior Manager at Crowe UK; and Kelly Stafford from Aptean (see page 72).

The event concluded with the evening networking session, sponsored by Optimas International, which included the

TorqueExpo Awards presentation (page 80), entertainment, food and drinks in a relaxed environment designed to encourage further industry interaction.

“It was great to see the industry come together again for TorqueExpo 2026,” said Jerry Ramsdale, Show Director of TorqueExpo. “The continued increase in exhibitor participation and visitor engagement demonstrates the importance of facetoface events for the sector. We would like to thank everyone involved in supporting this year’s exhibition and helping make it another successful event.”

As part of its ongoing exhibitor support initiative, Torque Magazine will continue offering editorial opportunities to participating companies following the event. Exhibitors can contact Editor Jonathon Harker or Deputy Editor Simon Yuen for further information.

Following the success of the 2026 exhibition, planning has already begun for the next TorqueExpo event. For more information, please contact Claire Warman on claire@torqueexpo.com.

TORQUE-EXPO AWARD WINNER INTERVIEW: IRONCLAD 2O26

Brighton-Best International were on stage at the Torque-Expo 2026 awards to pick up the prize for IronClad EXTRC Gloves, which won the Product Innovation – Workwear. Mike Churchill, Branch Manager at Brighton-Best International UK answers the questions…

You won the Torque-Expo 2026 Award for Product Innovation in Workwear (for the Ironclad Extrication (EXTRC) gloves – was it a surprise to win the award? Yes, very unexpected. We know some of our gloves are innovative and we always strive to use the latest technology and keep ahead of our competitors, but did not think we would win the award.

Where are you keeping the award in the office? It’s just on my desk at present so customers can see it. We’ll eventually move it though!

The Ironclad Extrication gloves can handle some demanding environments and have been used by rescue operators and fire departments in Europe – can you give us a rundown of their key features?

The three layer Armortex High Abrasion Palms made with DuPont Kevlar for exceptional abrasion resistance. It has a high visibility design for ultimate visibility in the field and it features ANSI A8 / Level 5 Puncture and BS EN 388 Cut Level F / Puncture level 4 giving outstanding protection for wearers. The lowprofile impact protection allows for greater dexterity in demanding situations and overall more flexibility.

Do you offer POS and merchandising materials to distributors and merchants stocking the gloves?

We can offer merchandising options, but the majority of our sales are direct to distributors / wholesale who sell by the box.

What would you say to a distributor or merchant that hasn’t really dabbled in stocking workwear but is considering it?

For Ironclad Gloves we have seen a cross over from our BBI customers who supply into Safety / Construction / Industrial / Manufacturing & Offshore industries; where end users also purchase PPE and Safety Workwear. Not all of our customers do this but we are seeing a growing number of them move into additional product categories as an added value service.

Can we expect more potentially award-winning product from Ironclad in the near future? Is there a pipeline of new products from the brand?

Our Ironclad Product Development Team in Dallas are always working on new products, from new High Cut Level HPPE 21 gauge dipped knit gloves and protective sleeves, High Heat Silica Transfer Gloves to Arc Flash Linesman Gloves and Next generation Impact Gloves; there will certainly be more innovative product in the near future.

Aside from the Ironclad glove range, BrightonBest International has been significantly expanding its stainless steel

CONFLUENCE OF MANUFACTURERS AND SUPPLIERS

This year’s Taiwan International Fastener Show reinforced the competitiveness of Taiwan’s fastener industry while accelerating momentum towards digital transformation and green upgrading ahead of the next edition in 2028…

The Taiwan International Fastener Show 2026 concluded in April at the Kaohsiung Exhibition Centre, bringing together international buyers and industry professionals for meetings with Taiwanese suppliers.

During the threeday exhibition from 22 to 24 April, multiple events were organised to connect international buyers with Taiwanese exhibitors. To facilitate targeted business matching, the Fastener Taiwan Sourcing Meeting featured 32 major international buyers from 14 countries, including Italy, France, Germany, the USA, Mexico, Israel, Ukraine and Japan, participating in 108 oneonone meetings with 75 domestic suppliers.

According to the organiser, Taiwan’s International Trade Administration (TITA), the meetings delivered highly productive results. Some buyers highlighted the technological innovations demonstrated by Taiwanese companies in response to carbon neutrality trends, leading to new business partnerships. Others praised Taiwanese suppliers for their strong

quality control and reliable lead times, expressing clear intentions to expand their sourcing activities in Taiwan, we’re told.

The second day featured the Global Fastener Forum, where industry experts shared insights into market trends and strategic transformation. Ed Smith, President of the National Fastener Distributors Association (NFDA), shared observations on North American demand, while Kristy Chi from the Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC) analysed the impact of US tariff policies and the EU’s Carbon Border

Multiple events are held to connect international buyers with Taiwanese exhibitors

Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). In addition, Zephyr Chang discussed smart manufacturing upgrades, while Andrew Li provided practical guidance on green transformation and sustainable development.

Complementing the exhibition, the organisers hosted a site visit on 24 April, allowing international buyers to experience Taiwan’s manufacturing capabilities firsthand. Visits to industry leaders including China Steel Corporation (CSC), Sheh Fung Screws and Taiwan Shan Yin highlighted the strength and integration of the local supply chain.

Buyers observed CSC’s use of recycled materials and lowcarbon transition initiatives, Sheh Fung’s precision manufacturing capabilities for the construction and automotive sectors, and Taiwan Shan Yin’s R&D expertise in highend medical and aerospace applications. This combination of an international trade exhibition and onsite industrial cluster visits further strengthened buyer confidence and reinforced Taiwan’s position as a leading global sourcing destination, said the organiser.

According to TITA, the successful conclusion of the 2026 Taiwan International Fastener Show 2026 once again demonstrated the global competitiveness of Taiwan’s fastener industry while driving further momentum for digital transformation and green upgrading. As one of the sector’s key biennial events, the show is set to return in 2028.
