PFinding the perfect toolbox
Considerations to make before purchasing your next toolbox.
By Emily Markham, Editor Emily@VehicleServicePros.com
urchasing a toolbox, whether it’s your first one or the last you’ll have before retiring, is a big commitment. There are many factors to take into consideration, as well as many conversations you’ll want to have with the mobile tool dealers who visit your shop.
PRICE
It’s no secret that buying a toolbox can be an expensive endeavor. However, there are a few options to consider that can help bring that price down a bit.
Option one – Look at used toolboxes. Places like Facebook Marketplace or eBay could potentially have exactly what you need for a fraction of the cost. Also, try talking with your mobile tool dealers. It’s possible they could have a box that was traded in by someone else that they’re able to give you a good deal on.
Option two – Speaking of trading in toolboxes, if you have a toolbox that you’ll no longer need once purchasing your new one, you may as well get rid
of it. Talk with your tool dealer about trading it in for some credit off your new purchase.
Option three – If a new toolbox is a must and trading in your old box isn’t an option, then one of the best things you can do is speak with your tool dealer about financing. This way, you’ll be able to come up with a payment plan that works for you.
QUALITY
A toolbox is meant to be a safe haven for all your tools, but if your box can’t handle the weight of your tool collection, it won’t be doing you much good. Issues like buckling drawers, or worse, could lead to you being unable to open parts of your toolbox. A technician who can’t access their tools is unable to do their job.
Additionally, with the price you’re paying for your toolbox, it’s expected that it should last a long time, regardless of the abuse it will likely receive in the shop – the wheels should keep turning, the drawers should keep opening, and the lock shouldn’t stick.
SIZE
Be sure that whatever toolbox you’re considering buying can hold all the tools you currently own and either already has the space or has the ability to be expanded to fit any future tool purchases. There’s nothing worse than making a purchase and realizing after the fact, that you’ve got the wrong size. If you’re in the market for a new toolbox, make sure to check out this month’s Category Spotlight (Pg. 60) to see some of the latest toolboxes that have been released.

JohnDow Industries
Vehicle Fire Blanket
JohnDow Industries’ Vehicle Fire Blanket enables you to suppress electric, hybrid, and internal combustion engine vehicle fire flames and fumes. Lithiumion battery fires are very difficult to extinguish and traditional fire repellents do not work due to thermal runaway. When an EV experiences thermal runaway, the battery self-generates heat until it reaches its limit or experiences a catastrophic failure like a fire. This fire blanket is the most efficient way to isolate an EV fire. The fire blanket’s high temperature-resistant material prevents fire from spreading and damaging surrounding vehicles and property while minimizing potential combustion and the fire’s temperature.

Tesla service, repair, and diagnostics
Stay up-to-date on how to maintain your customers’ Tesla vehicles.
By Scott Brown, Technical Editor
Although you may already provide service on Tesla’s, this article could reveal information you may not be completely aware of. Since Tesla’s fall into the “Software Defined Vehicle” (SDV) category, changes are continuously added to not only enhance the driver experience, correct for bugs and other issues, but are also rolling out changes to enhance the service technician’s experience as well. I now own two Tesla vehicles and over the past five-plus years I have witnessed many interesting changes that
have allowed for better diagnostics and a way for those interested in learning more about how these machines work to learn more through the highly informational graphics displayed on the center screen when in service mode, and the theory of operation data now made available within service information via subscription. A quick example of this is shown in Figure 1 displaying the live thermodynamic heat-pump data values on a Tesla Model Y.
In this article, you will find plenty of graphics, explanations, and several use cases that I believe you will find to be
highly informative. We will also cover how one can now access the vehicle remotely to triage and analyze vehicle problems before the vehicle arrives for service. I will also share an interesting case study where I was able to support a colleague, with a shop in Central California, in addressing a high-voltage battery problem on a 12-year-old Model S.
The role of automotive service technicians is evolving. With the advanced tools built into vehicles, such as those found on Teslas, you can experience the vehicles of the future today. The aftermarket service

of Tesla vehicles poses unique challenges and opportunities, requiring a specialized understanding of Tesla’s proprietary systems such as Toolbox, Garage, Periscope, and service information. This article aims to provide professional automotive service technicians with a detailed overview of Tesla Service, highlighting recent access developments and how they can leverage Tesla’s service tools.
SERVICE MODE & SERVICE MODE PLUS
Going back about four to five years ago the aftermarket had no access to service mode or service mode plus unless you were a certified collision center. Today
anyone can engage service mode through a couple of key presses on the screen. When accessing the software page and long pressing on the model’s name of the vehicle for approximately five seconds, a password entry box should appear, and entering the word service will allow you to engage in service mode. A disclaimer screen will appear letting you know that you could get yourself in trouble if you don’t know what you are doing. So, you should be cautious until you are highly fluent with Tesla vehicles.
On this first page (Figure 2), the first thing that I recommend doing is looking at the service alerts. This
provides a list of alerts and warnings that may be useful when addressing vehicle problems or complaints. But beware, researching this information should be carried out before engaging in any level of diagnostics because I have seen several alerts and warnings for items that are known issues and that may be corrected sometime down the road through software updates.
Additionally, the alerts shown either on the in-car display or in Toolbox may have an additional payload of cracked data that might be useful to the service technician (Figure 3).
For example, APP_w303_imuIrational on my 2018 model 3 equipped with a hardware 3 car computer indicates that there is a rationality error between the accelerometer or IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) located in the restraints control module and the IMU located inside of the car computer, a.k.a. Autopilot computer.
This is one example of a known issue that is supposed to be corrected with future software updates according to what Tesla shared with me during a service visit to address this alert. However, I have discovered something unusual on this vehicle that may be related to this IMU anomaly which I will share more about later in this article. There is another known false positive and that has to do with an indicated voltage drop. VCFRONT_a059_inputResistanceHigh. Reviewing service documents on the Tesla service information website can sometimes reveal these known issues and sometimes a Google search may reveal actual vehicle owner experiences and what Tesla service advised on such anomalies. Today’s technicians need to be highly resourceful and in doing so may save valuable time and effort. However, there are cases where you will not be able to look up certain fault codes unless you are using Tesla’s Toolbox 3.0 software where a lot of useful diagnostic information can be found.

TESLA TOOLBOX 3.0 SOFTWARE
Tesla Toolbox is a diagnostic and repair software offered by Tesla to access additional service information within the vehicle and from within the online application. The software runs in a web browser (preferably Chrome) where the computer is connected to an Ethernet diagnostic port located under the dash near the drivers kick panel. Service information will provide settings that will need to be set up with your network connection on your laptop or computer and specific settings that the browser needs to have. Essentially, you’ll need to assign a specific IP address to your network interface card and turn off all the security-related settings within the browser. Some of the earlier cars require specific connectors however for 2022 and later cars, the standard RJ45 cable connection is all you need to connect.
p Figure 4 – Tesla Service Mode Plus

When you connect the vehicle with Toolbox, the vehicle is automatically placed into Service Mode Plus. Service Mode Plus provides additional diagnostic access through the display screen found in the vehicle so let’s review a few of those differences.
HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY PAGE
On this page, you will see more options to perform various routines such as discharging the battery, clearing contactor problems, and other operations (Figure 4).
Additionally, there are a couple of relearns for the calculated ampere-hour charge and state of charge levels. You’ll need to review service information and obtain additional training to understand why one would need to execute these changes. And later in this article, I will share a case study where we performed these operations and were able to successfully enable a vehicle that had learned incorrect cell balancing values.
Here’s a note about resetting the high voltage battery management system calculated ampere-hour capacity.
“Resetting the calculated amperehour capacity may cause the vehicle to prematurely enter graceful poweroff mode at a displayed percentage or mileage above zero. It is important to inform the customer not to drive the vehicle below the 20 percent displayed range for the next eight weeks following a calculated ampere-hour capacity reset. This routine resets all the high voltage battery brick calculated amp hour capacities to the nominal/default values. During normal operation, the high voltage battery management system calculates brick-calculated amp hour capacities over multiple charge/discharge cycles. TESLA GARAGE
Tesla Garage (Figure 6) is accessible from within your active Toolbox subscription and provides you with a way to remotely connect to a vehicle and retrieve more information about the
vehicle. This can be extremely helpful in not only looking at current vehicle data but can offer up a look at high-resolution data from the past.
To obtain connection permission, you’ll need to use the Owner Authorization Request function. After making a Garage connection, then it would be wise to go into the CAN Explorer (Periscope) and request data logs from the past when the client was reporting vehicle symptoms. Once you do this, then when you are researching vehicle problems and viewing articles,
it is possible that you might be presented with a notice like what is shown in Figure 7
If you select the “View Plots” link, you’ll automatically load up Periscope which is Tesla’s data viewer allowing service personnel to research vehicle problems. Tesla Periscope is a newer addition to the Toolbox suite of service tools, and it’s a powerful tool as you’ll see demonstrated later in this article.
SANDBOX
When searching through articles you’ll see a small + sign next to the article title. Clicking on it will load the article into the “Sandbox” where one can leverage a feature that will show causal relationships. The articles will be linked if related and displayed in a way that shows the items the vehicle is aware of on the left side of the page and potential solutions listed on the right side of the page (Figure 8).
MAINTENANCE SERVICES
Tesla and other BEV’s will require maintenance. Here is a list of services we carry out in our facility.
• Alignment and tires – Tires for EVs have more demand due to vehicle weight and torque. Tires should be rotated every 5-6,000 miles. Wheel alignment checks can be done via software within service mode, but I have found many of these vehicles leaving the factory with wheel alignments that are not set up for optimum tire life.
• HVAC – The A/C system is an integral part of the EV systems and on pretty much all EVs. Therefore there are maintenance and inspections that should be performed on Teslas. Every five years Tesla states that the desiccant bag shall be replaced (Figure 9) which of course will require an evacuation and recharge of the system. Be sure to check service information for the appropriate tools and equipment needed to remove and install the

desiccant bag and filter. This is also a suitable time to make sure that there is the proper amount of oil within the system which can be checked using an appropriately prepared sight glass as shown in Figure 10.
• Brake Systems – The brakes rarely get used on an EV that is driven in a manner that is most efficient, but the braking system still must be able to stop the vehicle. Periodic inspections of the brake pads and rotors should be performed. Additionally, periodic maintenance on the brake caliper sliders along with brake fluid replacement should be performed as well. Check service information for more info.
• General inspections – Teslas use a lot of aero close-out panels which should be removed periodically for proper inspections. Looking for any anomalies such as hose or harness routing, evidence of critter exploration, drivetrain mounts, and heat exchanger airflow problems that can occur from the accumulation of debris between the condenser and radiators. Additionally, since BEVs weigh 20-30 percent more than their ICE counterparts, suspension wear and tear will likely present many service opportunities.
CASE STUDY – MODEL S BATTERY ISSUE
I received a text from a colleague about a 2012 Model S with 174k that arrived at his shop with a client complaint of a warning message on the display stating that there was a problem with the HV battery and the fact that the client was unable to charge the battery above 30 percent. After gaining authorization from the client to remote into the vehicle, we retrieved an Urgent Alert BMS_ u018_SOC. Looking this up in Tesla Toolbox I came across Article 7763300 which had the following statements: “In certain scenarios, a customervisible High Voltage (HV) battery State
of Charge (SOC) imbalance alert sets due to a condition unrelated to the HV batterybricks.
In these situations, it is prudent not to simply replace the HV battery pack without further diagnosis to confirm an SOC imbalance exists: in some cases, simply updating the vehicle firmware or running an Onboard Diagnostic Interface (ODIN) routine might resolve the issue.”
The document listed several steps to follow which we did and were able to get the vehicle to charge well past 80 percent. The cell balancing deltas went from approximately 422mv to 40mv over the course of a few days of discharging and recharging the battery after performing the resets outlined in the service docu-
ment. Here are the data valves we collected near the end of one of the final charge cycles:
• Voltage: 385.3 V
• Battery Min Temp: 27 °C
• Max Temp: 28 °C
• Min Brick V: 4 V
• Max Brick V: 4 V
• SOC Min Unscaled: 81.8 percent
• Max Unscaled: 86.2 percent
• CAC Min: 239 Ah
• CAC Max: 239 Ah
• CAC Average: 239 Ah
Looking back at the data logs from the vehicle during our discharge > recharge routines, I was able to observe the cell min and max values and their progression over time (Figure 11). This vehicle was recently purchased through a used

CASE STUDY – MODEL 3 –INERTIAL MEASUREMENT UNIT
Although the following issue has yet to be resolved, I strongly believe that this scenario will provide technicians with insight into what Tesla has to offer regarding diagnostics.
The vehicle is a 2018 Model 3 with approximately 80,000 miles. This vehicle is equipped with the FSD (Full Self Drive) car computer hardware version 3.0 which is Tesla’s first internally developed hardware to support their self-driving efforts. My vehicle did not come equipped with this module, but Tesla made a retrofit option available back around 2021, so I opted into it. I have been studying the full self-drive capabilities and can attest that I have

seen a remarkable evolution in vehicle capabilities taking place.
About a year or so ago I started noticing some strange vehicle behavior especially when the vehicle was operating in self-drive. I was interested in seeing if there was any vehicle data that could help explain what was happening. I also began seeing a recurring warning titled APP_w303_imuIrational. Now when you look at these alerts and warnings in the Toolbox Periscope application, the alerts and warnings will typically carry a payload of data that can be analyzed, but beware, the alerts and warnings are triggered by the clear event and not at the time the fault was triggered
When researching the article covering this issue, the warning is explained as follows:
“The Autopilot electronic control unit (ECU) internal inertial measure-
ment unit (IMU) is irrational compared to the IMU from the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) or Restraint Control Module (RCM). This may occur due to an internal condition affecting the Autopilot board or may set temporarily due to aggressive driving (high lateral and longitudinal acceleration).”
The IMU data from the Autopilot computer cannot be monitored through any of the methods I have but I can see that the restraints control module IMU appears to deliver normal data. The fault clears when the cabin temp drops to around 17 degrees Celsius on my drive home from work (Figure 12) I only recently associated the temperature relationship due to the next

scenario I began to unfold starting this summer. The data demonstrates that the alarm begins going off each day around noon when the ambient temperature rises to approximately 34 degrees Celsius (Figure 13). Reviewing alert data I found VCSEC_a133_alarmTriggered and loading this up in Periscope I can see that the UI (User Interface) was the requester for the alarm which doesn’t give me a whole lot to go on (Figure 14). As I began to dig further, I decided to
have a look at the Sentry video recordings stored in the user-accessible USB drive associated with these events. I believe I found additional evidence pointing back to the autopilot’s IMU as being the potential cause. When you look at the folders created for these sentry events, you’ll find a JSON file that has metadata containing the timestamp, location, reason, and which camera detected the condition. In this first example, the sentry_panic_accel value appears to indicate .9 g’s of lon-
So, to close this out for now, I believe that the IMU on the autopilot board is the cause of this anomaly. Soon I plan to work towards a resolution and to share this journey in full when able. I hope you found this article helpful and informative and if you’d like to see more Tesla coverage, please let us know as there is a lot more we can discuss. Diagnosing an engine misfire
Recognizing a misfire is the easy part; the challenge is determining its cause.
By Roy Ripple, Contributing Editor
An engine misfire is one of the few driveability concerns we can identify immediately during the road test. Recognizing that a misfire exists is the easy part; the challenge is determining its cause.
When diagnosing a misfire, it makes sense to test the easiest, less invasive causes first, and the first step of all diagnostics is the visual inspection.
Once you’ve determined which cylinder is misfiring, look around under the hood for an observable cause. Check con-
nections at the ignition coil and the fuel injector. Look for a harness that might have been chewed through by a critter. Remove the coil and check for a damaged or liquid-soaked boot. Remove the spark plug. If the plug is blown apart or covered with carbon, you’ve found the problem

and saved yourself a lot of diagnostic time. If you’re not that lucky, check for spark.
TESTING FOR SPARK
I use a Lisle Coil-On-Plug Spark Tester, No. 20700. It’s simple to use and presents a good visual of the spark. The tester has easy-to-read gap measurements of 0 to 40KV, and the spark gap is adjustable. Figure 1 shows the tester attached to coil No. 2 and the ground wire attached to a good engine ground. You can easily see the spark jumping across the air gap in Figure 2 . Having a good spark at the coil does not mean the spark is making it to the tip of the spark plug. Inspect for carbon tracks along the inside of the coil boot that might have transferred to the spark plug. The spark will follow a carbon track along the side of the spark plug straight to ground, never reaching the central electrode.
Check for power and ground at the coil if you have no spark. For two wire coils, one wire is hot with the ignition on or with the engine cranking, and the other blinks a ground generated by the powertrain control module (PCM). I use a Blue Point Noid Light, No. FID8837, to check the coil harness. You should get a bright blinking light with the noid light connected to the coil harness and the engine cranking.
Three wire coils have a third wire that is a full-time ground. This ground is attached to the engine block and should be loadtested. I use two 1157 brake light bulbs to load test ground circuits. If we have a good spark, we check for fuel.
LISTEN TO THE FUEL INJECTOR
Listening is the best way to determine if a fuel injector is working. I use a Steelman EngineEar II Electronic Stethoscope to listen to the fuel injector while the engine is running. The tool features a decibel meter with seven sound level control set-
BATTERY SERVICE INNOVATION
tings ranging from 60 to 120 decibels. A pair of over-the-ear headphones are included to help block out background noises when scanning.
As you can see in Figure 3, the meter shows 2 decibels at the injector. Compare the sound of the injector to a known good. Mechanically defective fuel injectors tend to rattle rather than click. If the injector is silent, it’s not working, so use the noid light to verify power and ground at the injector.
IT COULD BE AN ENGINE CONCERN
Most misfires caused by a base engine concern will create a low compression condition in the failing cylinder. It’s essential to use a good compression gauge that you can count on to display and hold compression readings accurately. A leaky gauge can ruin your day. Our diagnosis is only as good as the equipment we use. I use the Mityvac MV5532 Digital Compression Tester. The gauge offers a digital readout with a maximum compression indicator. Compression values can be stored for up to 12 cylinders, and the tool comes with all the hoses and adapters you should need. Figure 4 reveals that cylinder No. 2 only has 34 psi compression and the maximum compression indicator on the lower right of the readout shows that this is the highest compression recorded in this cylinder. A leaking valve or leaking compression rings are the most likely cause of compression loss in a cylinder.
A cylinder leakdown tester will determine the percentage of air escaping the cylinder, and your ears will determine where
p Figure 2 – You can easily see the spark jumping across the air gap. Photo courtesy of Roy Dennis Ripple
it’s going. I use an OTC Cylinder Leakage Tester, No. 5609. Figure 5 shows the leakdown tester hooked up to cylinder #2. The left gauge shows that 100 psi air pressure is being pumped into the cylinder, yet the cylinder is only holding 15 psi per the right side gauge. This indicates 85 percent leakage in that cylinder. The air can easily be heard escaping from the exhaust.
SKIP THE WET TEST
I’m sure some of you use the wet test to determine whether a valve or a piston ring is causing the compression loss. This test is performed by taking a mechanical compression test after squirting oil into the cylinder. The premise is that oil will seal a leaking ring and won’t seal a burnt valve. I’ve never liked this test, and I don’t use it. More than once, I’ve seen oil seal a leaky valve, resulting in an incorrect diagnosis. Cylinder leakdown is the only sure way to diagnose a compression loss. An intake valve not opening will also cause low compression, simply because there is nothing being pulled into the cylinder to compress. Also, be sure that the cylinder walls aren’t washed down with fuel due to a faulty injector before condemning the base engine. Gasolinesoaked compression rings will stop sealing, causing low compression.
DON’T FORGET THE COOLING SYSTEM
Coolant entering the cylinder is a base engine concern that will cause a misfire without always affecting compression. This is especially true for misfires during initial startup after a short soak. Coolant will seep into the cylinder when the engine is off, usually through a failed head gasket or a cracked head. A cooling system combustion leak tester uses liquid bromothymol to detect CO2 in the cooling system. The testing fluid starts out dark blue and changes color when it absorbs CO2. In a case of extreme contamination, the liquid will turn yellow when testing a gasoline engine. The liquid

will turn green or even a lighter shade of blue when only small amounts of CO2 are detected. I use the Blue Point Combustion Leak Tester, No. GDCT16. Figure 6 shows the results when the tester detects CO2 gases in the cooling system. Be sure that the cooling system is at operating temperature when testing. Dual-chamber testers are more accurate than single-chamber testers because the first chamber serves as a filter to absorb any alkaline particles that could induce a false reading. If the second chamber changes color, it sees combustion gases.

Like most things we do, a misfire diagnosis is only as good as the equipment we use. The confidence of knowing that the input you receive from your diagnostic tools is accurate is more than worth the extra time and money.

INNOVATION AWA RDS
Oasis Scientific Vividia CX-4010i Borescope
Q&A with Zach Egan, marketing manager at Oasis Scientific.
Q: What makes this product innovative?
A: What makes this product innovative is a combination of different things. One thing is the fact that it is a 4mm diameter scope, meaning it’s pretty thin. It's compatible with iPhone, iPad, and Android. You can throw your phone on the removable mount that’s included with it. It takes the barrier to entry down for borescopes, which is helpful for startup technicians. Instead of having to pay a lot for an expensive monitor, you can use the device you have in your pocket. The biggest feature is the joystick articulation. You can get specific angles with the joystick control, which technicians love.
Q: What was the inspiration behind creating this product?
A: The inspiration behind it is that we’ve been working on borescopes as a company pretty much since our inception and just improving them year after year. We saw with the evolving technology, we were like, “Now we’re able to do compatibility with phones.” Our joystick ones are very popular and we had a bunch of pieces of the puzzle that worked together well. We thought they’d come together to create a really good inspection tool, which they clearly have.
Q: How will this product improve the lives of technicians and shop owners?
A: The general concept of a borescope is really awesome because you’re able to take a camera and put it in any place you have to inspect without having to tear down a whole vehicle. That revolutionizes life for shop owners because that's labor hours that they’d have to be putting in. It might be a complete waste. Being able to just get right inside somewhere and see problems without having to do a full tear-down is really just revolutionary for shop owners.
Q: What has the feedback from technicians been like so far?
A: The feedback has been super awesome. The only complaints we ever really get is when people are way too aggressive with them. Besides that, people kind of just tell us, “You helped us find problems that we never would have known about.” We’ve also heard that the camera quality is better
than one you may get on Amazon. A quality product at an affordable price is what we hear.
Q: Is there anything else about the CX-4010i our readers should know?
A: You can choose to use a borescope or you can choose not to use a borescope. It’s one of those things where it’s going to be a preventative measure. I highly recommend if you’re a shop owner, you have one of these around because there are so many stories we’ve heard about, I know there was one gentleman in the aviation industry who was about to buy a plane and he used his borescope to inspect inside the plane. He found issues that would have basically lost all of his money immediately and could have put him in grave danger. It’s one of those things where you may think, “Oh, I’ll hold off, I don’t really need it.” The preventative measures that it provides are so powerful. I recommend all shop owners have one.

Work IQ Tools IQ Vise
Reviewed by Eric Moore, manager
at DeMary Truck in Columbus, Ohio.
Q: How did the tool/equipment function as far as saving you time?
A: I’ve been using the Work IQ Tools IQ Vise for almost a month now. I’m impressed with the versatility that Work IQ Tools built in with the interchangeable jaw inserts for specific tasks and with the optional accessories. I believe that the vise could save time for certain projects where using a typical bench vise would require being creative.
Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?
A: All items came packaged in cardboard boxes with clear plastic windows to view the products. The vise came with multi-purpose jaw inserts, a set of multi-purpose inserts, woodworking inserts, pipe inserts, leather inserts for soft items, and an accessory kit that includes three flexible arms. There is
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The IQ Vise from Work IQ Tools features a ball and socket design that allows articulation and 360-degree rotation at any angle. It includes a Quick Cam compression lever in the front that gives the vise more functionality by allowing it to lay flat, lock at any angle, or rotate for optimal work positioning. The eight-position IQ Lok locks the ball in place and allows up to 130 ft-lbs of torque. Additionally, five different IQ Vise Jaws allow users to tailor the vise’s grip for the project at hand. one of each insert that holds an included flashlight, a 6” magnifying lens, and a spring-loaded X-style cell phone holder. Personally, I could use another of the magnetic bases so I can use the light and the cell phone holder at the same time.
Q: Was there a manual included? If so, did you use the manual, and was the manual easy to understand?
A: There are instructions included with pictures.
Q: What features did you like?
A: The interchangeable sleeves and multiple-angle lockable positioning make this pretty great to use compared to the old standard bench/pipe vise, which still has plenty of uses in the shop, especially for heavier jobs.
Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?
A: If I had to recommend any improvements, I would say a brighter flashlight or maybe a spring clip-style holder that would accept other lights. A heavy duty offering would do well in my opinion.
Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?
A: I used the IQ Vise for some oddfitting projects with great success. I used the multi-purpose inserts to hold the string trimmer while I rewound the head with string, it was much easier than trying to hold it between my knees. I took the opportunity to use the vise with the multi-purpose jaws and sharpened the lawnmower blade. Unfortunately, I haven’t found
a chance to use the woodworking or leather inserts yet.
Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?
A: The interchangeable sleeves and multiple-angle lockable positioning make this pretty great to use compared to the old standard bench/pipe vise, especially for heavier jobs.
Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?
A: Overall I’d say this is a solid nine out of 10, no complaints.

The ‘Iron Giant’
This technician spent two and a half years putting together his ‘giant’ of a toolbox setup.
By Emily Markham, Editor
During COVID, Bob Roux, maintenance foreman for VCT, Inc. in Kelso, Washington, started assembling his now 17’2” long Cornwell Quality Tools toolbox setup. The setup consists of two side lockers, a hutch, an upper single bank toolbox, and one of Cornwell’s Iron Giant tool storage systems. Roux spent two and a half years putting this setup together and traded in his previous, smaller, Cornwell box to get started.
ALL ABOUT STORAGE
Roux has been doing vehicle repair for around 30 years, on and off, throughout his life. Between his longevity as a technician and the fact that he works in a heavy duty truck shop, Roux needed a toolbox that could handle his collection of tools.
“I do everything,” Roux notes of his position at the shop, “I needed a box to store tools so I can do my job.”
Bob Roux
Shop: VCT, Inc.
Location: Kelso, Washington
The storage is actually the technician’s favorite part of his box. All the space allows him to organize his tools exactly as he likes.
“People think I’m kind of crazy because I’ve got a drawer for almost everything,” Roux says. “I’ve got two separate wrench drawers, one for metric, one for standards, and I’ve got separate drawers just for my ratchets and my extensions.”
Although, even with all his organization, he notes that the box is large enough he sometimes still gets lost looking for a tool.
Luckily, he also has a tool cart he can use to prioritize whatever tools he needs for the job at hand. Being able to push his tools around also means he
saves time by not having to keep walking back and forth to his larger setup.
A QUALITY BOX
When it comes to looking for a new toolbox, Roux notes that price and quality are the two major factors technicians should be taking into consideration.
“I really like this,” Roux says of his toolbox setup. “It’s a fair price, and the quality of the box is what sold me on it. My [tool] dealer took care of me.”
To make his box stand out a bit –though the size certainly does this already – Roux put the words ‘Iron Giant’ in large letters across his hutch with two of Cornwell’s Iron Man symbols on either side.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Roux admits that his toolbox is already full.
“I gotta quit buying tools,” he says. “I’m gonna retire in a few more years.”
However, he does have one more addition he’d like to add – a power drawer box. This way he can not only store all his power tools together but can charge them as well so they’re ready to go whenever he needs them.
