Q: What makes this product innovative?
A: The main thing is it helps prevent overtightening of the plastic and aluminum oil filter canisters. What it’s going to do is it’s going to turn any 3/8-drive ratchet or breaker bar into a 25 N.m torque wrench. So, it can also be used with a 21mm socket or wrench, but it is not for use with an impact wrench.
Q: What was the inspiration behind creating this product?
A: If a housing cap is overtightened, you can cause damage to the cap or it can leak oil, so that’s the main problem. But once the tool reaches the specific amount of torque needed, you’ll kind of hear a click sound, and it won’t let you overtighten it past that point. So, a lube tech who might not have as much experience or needs a little training, they might tend to over torque something a little bit, but now this tool will prevent that. It won’t let them.
Q: How will this product improve the lives of technicians and shop owners?
A : It’s a great tool for speeding up some oil changes. Once you get used to it, you’re not going to overtighten those oil pan plugs. I think it will save [shops] money in the long run. I think shop owners like it because lube techs aren’t going to be able to over torque and break caps. It’s kind of more of a peace of mind tool for the shop owner, too — knowing that the job is done right, and there’s not going to be customers coming back with complaints.
Q: What has been the feedback from technicians who’ve purchased this tool?
A: I like to think Lisle always comes through with tools that are going to help a flat rate tech stay efficient with their time. This is going to work on a variety of other things where a 25 N.m torque is required. So, oil drain plugs, oil pan bolts, spark plugs are all examples of where this tool could come in handy.
Q: Anything else our readers should know?
A: In addition to this 25 N.m, we heard feedback, and we heard we need to add two more sizes. So, we came out with a kit — part number 60740. That’s our Torque Adapter 3-pc Set. It has a 25 N.m, 35 N.m, and 40 N.m torque adapter. And if you go take a look on our website, we put some applications up there so everyone can go see what applies to the different tools. Another thing worth mentioning is there’s a couple different units of measurement for torque out there. So, some people might refer to Newton meters, or some people might refer to foot-pounds. If that’s the case, 25 N.m equals roughly 18 ft-lbs, 35 N.m equals 25 ft-lbs, and 40 N.m equals 30 ft-lbs. You might see some of those different measurements called out, and that’s the equivalent of that.

A look into the diagnostic strategies, gateway modules, and challenges technicians are facing with vehicle network communications.
By Scott Brown, Technical Editor
In my opinion, the automotive technology found in today’s modern automobiles is nothing short of amazing. Today, in-service technicians face complex vehicle communication systems that are not only crucial for proper and safe vehicle operation but can also aid the technician during troubleshooting by bringing them critical vehicle telemetry right to the built-in center stack within the vehicle. (Figure 1)
Today’s networks integrate dozens of electronic controllers managing sensor data and video data, as well as carrying out vehicle operations via actuators and other devices in a timely manner. Many of today’s vehicles utilize high-speed Ethernet and other protocols such as LVDS (low-voltage differential signaling) to support safety and driver assistance. There is no doubt in my mind that service personnel possessing the skills and knowledge needed to diagnose communication faults will be on the rise and will become a critical asset for any modern service facility. Mastering these systems requires a solid foundation in basic electrical skills and Ohm’s Law, which are critical for troubleshooting even the most advanced networks. This article explores the past, present, and future of vehicle network communications, emphasizing diagnostic strategies, gateway modules, and how the challenges of network data congestion are driving new protocols and expansion buses.
I started my professional career in the early 1980s, when vehicles relied on point-to-point wiring with minimal electronics controlling basic functions such as ignition and lighting. Diagnosing vehicle anomalies primarily meant testing circuits with a test light and, in some cases, a multimeter. I remember attending classes discussing a new need for a meter that had 10 million ohms of impedance when testing low voltage sensor circuits, and without a solid understanding of Ohm’s Law (V=IR), many failed to understand why a typical large analog meter (Figure 2) was unacceptable for such tasks.
Additionally, most vehicle manufacturers weren’t too concerned about
wiring mass. I remember servicing GM vehicles from the late '70s that had an orange diagnostic port under the hood, which was a diagnostic gang plug that tapped into several circuits designed to help the technician diagnose vehicle problems. If you needed to drive the starter, test the A/C compressor, tap ignition coil negative, lighting circuits, and others, this connector provided quick access.
In the early '80s, General Motors introduced computer controls, which really sparked my interest since almost all the seasoned techs around me didn’t want anything to do with these systems. One of my early scan tools was the MPSI Multi-Scanner (Figure 3), which read out serial data and provided the ability to issue commands back into the vehicle.
Bosch introduced the controller area network concept in the late 1980s, which was a significant shift that proposed allowing ECUs to share data over a communication bus, reducing wiring complexity. If you were working on European vehicles in the '90s, you likely were exposed to CAN, but for the rest of us, CAN was mandated around 2008 for OBD-II. In the late 1990s, Mercedes

may consist of either a twisted pair or single wire (SWCAN, LIN) to manage low-speed convenience functions such as seats, windows, and other non-critical items.
Gateway modules were introduced to allow messages traveling on different networks to be shared. For example, a gateway might translate CAN data from the engine, such as vehicle speed, to LIN for interior controls to automatically lock the doors at a programmed speed threshold. Gateways also enhance security by providing a physical or software-driven firewall to filter unauthorized access, prevent improper service operations, and/or provide traceability. For example, a carmaker may want to track when a vehicle receives ADAS service operations, such as a recalibration. They could require a third party, such as Auto-Auth, to manage that access
through credentialing, which could be logged within the vehicle and/or within external cloud-based storage systems.
Technicians must possess an understanding of gateway architecture to identify communication faults, whether these faults are due to software versioning, improper service functions, scan tool deficiencies, or electrical circuit faults. They will need the skills necessary to effectively deploy various tools such as DVOMs, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, specialized adapters, and more to interrogate the systems. When it comes to low-voltage systems, it is extremely crucial that the technician possesses foundational knowledge of Ohm’s Law and electronic circuit operational knowledge of transistors, diodes, MOSFETs, inductors, and other electronic components.
Diagnosing network issues demands more than scan tool proficiency, especially if the network(s) are down, leaving the scan tool unable to communicate with the vehicle. Faults in this category often stem from basic electrical circuit problems, such as unwanted resistance or circuit shorts to power, ground, or other network circuits. (Figure 5)
Unwanted resistance can come from corrosion and/or poor terminal fitment, which often stems from improper testing, i.e., using the wrong size male pin when testing female terminal sizes. However, I have seen replacement connectors come equipped with terminals not meeting the original terminal specifications. This is problematic because the initial install of the

replacement connector may result in proper vehicle operation, but it’s only a matter of time before a fault surfaces. Additionally, the devices that get plugged into the J1962 OBDII port, whether for diagnosis or other uses, can lead to problems down the road. Remember, each connector is rated for a limited number of cycles, and in addition to that, if the device used for interrogating the system has male pin sizes larger than specified, tool communication problems may arise down the road.
However, before any testing, the technician needs to baseline the system, meaning that they need to establish knowledge about the system configuration, wiring, termination, gateways, etc., and if they’re relying on older network knowledge, they are doing themselves a disservice. For example, for most HSCAN networks, we were taught that one method for checking network wiring integrity was to disconnect the battery and check the resistance across terminals 6 and 14 at the J1962 OBDII port. If that test were conducted on newer GM vehicles equipped with a Serial Data Gateway Module (SDGM), they would undoubtedly observe 120 ohms of resistance. For a technician unfamiliar with this network architecture, translating those results into an actionable process to address would be in for a rough road ahead. Figure 6 shows that terminals 6 and 14 make a short run to the SDGM and are completely isolated from the other networks on the vehicle.
If you’re interested in learning more about GM network architecture, diagnostics, and other related topics, Martin Smith, one of my professional colleagues and a GM instructor, has posted numerous articles on the Diagnostic Network (diag.net). These articles can be extremely helpful for
anyone seeking to further their knowledge on network diagnostics. See the sidebar (pg. 38) for links to some of these articles.
Corroded connectors, shorted wires, or improper grounds are some of the major problems technicians will typi-
cally face when troubleshooting network anomalies. As mentioned above, Ohm’s Law is crucial: a technician might measure resistance to detect an open circuit (infinite ohms) or measure low currents to learn if a module is powering up internally or if the module’s
The only time people notice an air compressor is when it’s not working. That’s why Jenny has basically gone unnoticed since 1927. It’s the hazard of offering the most reliable compressors on the market, but we wouldn’t have it any other way…nor would our customers.

internal CAN transceivers are sending messages. For instance, a CAN bus requires 60 ohms of termination resistance, but the technician needs to have a solid understanding of the network’s layout so they can leverage the terminating resistance. If they’re dealing with an intermittent communication problem — and have several connectors within that circuit — the technician will need to have the ability to test these circuits effectively during their diagnostic session. Using an ohmmeter might work, but this test is highly influenced by test lead and connection resistance. Using a milliohm meter with kelvin probes is one way to validate low-voltage signaling circuits by using higher currents and measuring true voltage drop at the probe tips, which eliminates influence on the measurements due to test lead resistance. Electrical skills enable technicians to test power, ground, and signal lines methodically, avoiding guesswork. As networks gain complexities, these fundamentals remain the foundation of effective diagnostics, ensuring accurate fault isolation and, more importantly, getting to the root of the problem.
Modern vehicles can have over 100 ECUs, from infotainment to ADAS, which share data on these networks. Given that there’s a limited number of messages that can be shared across a single network due to bandwidth limitations, manufacturers use expansion buses which can be classified as dedicated subnets for specific operations, like a separate CAN for chassis systems. Faster protocols like CAN FD (up to 8 Mbps) and Flex Ray (10 Mbps) reduce latency, but congestion persists. This drives adoption of high-bandwidth solutions like Ethernet (100 Mbps- 1GBit) and LVDS (2-20 Gbit) for high-speed, noise-resistant data transfer in applications like cameras delivering high bit-rate data. Technicians must understand these architectures to diagnose bottlenecks or protocol-specific faults.
The future of vehicle network communications will involve high-speed
networking protocols. Automotive Ethernet, with speeds up to 25 Gbps, supports data-intensive perception devices supporting autonomous driving systems. As mentioned earlier, some LVDS devices can be powered by the same circuit providing communication over coaxial cabling. You may have already seen such cabling where troubleshooting these systems will mostly involve testing the continuity of the cabling via specialized terminals and a high-resolution milliohmeter, as mentioned earlier. Repair steps for faulty cabling will usually result in an overlay cable since removing the old cabling would typically require extensive labor. To aid with testing these coaxial connections with common Fakra termination, there is a special tool kit that I have been using for the past 6-7 years. You may want to investigate acquiring it. (Figure 7)
As vehicle technology continues to evolve, this will push the technician to continually craft their skills around diagnostics, utilizing tools and techniques to advance their prowess. These skills will pay off as the software-defined vehicles with zonal architectures begin to arrive in your bay. Additionally, the on-board diagnostics, remote access, and more will evolve as well, strengthening the diagnostic offerings embedded within the vehicle.

Leak detection and inspection tools and equipment have gained a lot of traction in the last couple of years, much like every other category of tools and equipment when it comes to technological advancements. In the shop environment, it’s easy to get lulled into that “This is how we’ve always done it,” mentality. The great thing about today’s technology is that it brings tons of opportunities to increase efficiency and simply do a better job for our clients.
When it comes to inspections or leak detection, these opportunities matter more than most people realize. I would like to discuss the hardest type of leak

ULTRASONIC PARK SENSOR DETECTION WAND detection we deal with, as well as noise/ water leaks, A/C leaks, and some great inspection tips we have in our shop.
A small A/C leak can be one of the hardest things to detect. On top of that, many technicians fall into the routine of just checking boxes on inspections rather than actually looking for potential future issues with the vehicle. They check the same items they’ve always checked and often ignore the bigger picture. At our shop, we’ve gone out of our way to integrate more technologydriven tools, far beyond the basic digital vehicle inspection process that, at this point, most successful shops already use. Adding those tools has completely changed how we approach both inspections and leak detection.
AI TECHNOLOGY
One of the biggest upgrades we’ve made is the Autel Ultra S2. Its artificial intelligence-driven picture system is impressive. You take a snapshot of the vehicle, and it automatically recognizes
scratches, dents, and dings, marking them on the inspection report with their locations. (Figure 1) That saves a huge amount of time compared to manually labeling pictures and often catches damage that might have been missed, like scratched wheels or curb rash. I’ll be the first to admit that I often overlook curb rash, just because it’s so common in my area. Having a tool that flags it automatically makes sure we never miss it.
On top of tools like the Ultra S2, the reality is that every technician today
has a cell phone, and almost every shop management system worth anything has the ability to upload videos directly into the inspection report or ticket. Even if a shop doesn’t have a standardized digital vehicle inspection process, videos taken during inspections are incredibly valuable. They show the customer exactly what we’re seeing and add credibility to our recommendations. Processes are what make our shop live and breathe, and the ability to show problems in real time with video makes the process smoother for everyone.
Beyond basic phones and the Ultra S2, we’ve also added the Autel ITS600. (Figure 2) This tool measures TPMS sensors and then digitally integrates tire pressure data directly into the inspection report on the Ultra S2. When paired with the TBE200 tool (Figure 3), it also measures tire tread depth and even the surface finish of brake rotors and sends it directly to the Ultra S2 report as well. The rotor surface feature is something that’s more popular in Europe as it is required by their MOT inspections but having it available makes the report even more complete. By simply scanning the tire sensors and tread, the data drops right into the report. The process is quick, slick, and consistent, which is what matters most during an inspection.
For clarity in photos and videos, we also use simple pointers. It might be something as basic as a screwdriver with a red tip or a dowel pin. (Figure 4) These are small things, but they make it clear to the viewer exactly what part of the photo they should be focusing on. In practice, video tends to beat still photos because it gives context and shows the problem more clearly. Either way, tools and small tricks like these make inspections easier and more effective.
When we move past inspections and start looking at leak detection specifically, that’s where it gets really interesting. The key here is having both old school and new school methods available. Nitrogen is one of the most common tools for detecting leaks, and it still works extremely well. Filling a system with nitrogen and then pairing it with the INFICON Whisper Ultrasonic Leak Detector tool makes detecting small leaks much easier. The Whisper
tool can pick up the tiny noises made as nitrogen escapes, and you can even output the data into an oscilloscope. That creates a digital representation of the leak that can be saved, measured, and reviewed later. This allows you to show exactly how much of a leak there was, when it was fixed, and to keep proof instead of just saying, “It was here, now it’s not.”
Thermal imaging cameras can also be used to detect leaks, but the truth is that most leaks that are big enough to show up on thermal imaging are big enough to be found by other methods, like nitrogen or even just soapy water. So, while thermal imaging has its place, it’s not always the most efficient or reliable option.
Every day, professionals and DIYers trust their lives to vehicle lifts. But the web is flooded with offshore resellers pushing uncertified, no-name lifts with bold claims — no proof, no oversight, no accountability.
BendPak certified lifts meet ANSI/ALI ALCTV (current edition), the only nationally recognized lift safety and performance standard. Only certified lifts carry the ALI Gold Label and appear in the official ALI Directory, proof of third-party testing and validation.
At BendPak, safety is engineered into every lift. Built strong. Certified tough. And every Gold Label tells the story.
If you’re lifting cars and putting people under them, nothing matters more than safety. Don’t risk it on unverified imports. Get the lift that’s certified. Get BendPak.
Speaking of soapy water, there are products on the market that make using soapy water to create bubbles where a small leak is much more effective. One of them is called Big Blu. It was designed originally for natural gas leaks. Without getting too technical, the product makes soap “thicker” so that it stays in place and reacts to small changes in pressure better than your standard Dawn Dish Soap. In practice, what that means is that the bubbles cling better to surfaces, and they’re much easier to see. When a leak is present, the bubbles stay around longer, making the detection process much easier and more reliable. It’s a simple solution, but one that works surprisingly well.
On the more advanced end, we’ve
started using other ultrasonic detection methods similar to the Inficon Whisper tool for some types of leaks. These are especially helpful for water leaks or noise leaks around glass doors and seals. The process involves a 40-kilohertz noise production device, the Lutron GS-400 (Figure 5), which was originally made for detecting natural gas leaks. We pair that with the AES Wave TA329 Ultrasonic Park Sensor Detection Wand. (Figure 6) The wand is tuned specifically to detect 40,000 hertz noises, which just happens to be the exact same frequency that both the noise generator produces and ultrasonic park sensors use. By placing the noise generator inside a vehicle while it produces a 40khz sound and then running the wand around the seals, we can detect any escaping sound that shouldn’t be leaving the cabin. An oscilloscope can pick this up and make it visible, giving us clear evidence of where the leak or noise problem is happening. I’ve got to give props to my friend Hans Jorgensen for showing me this trick.
This process may sound a little fancy, but it’s far more effective than the old-school method of flooding the car with a water hose and trying to guess where the water might drip in. Often, the spot where the water drips is nowhere near the actual leak. And if you’re chasing wind noise, water may never show anything at all, since a wind noise problem doesn’t always let water leak through. The ultrasonic method removes the guesswork and pinpoints exactly where the problem is. It’s cleaner, faster, and more reliable.
What all of this adds up to is that leak detection and inspection tools have taken major steps forward in recent years. The advancements aren’t just in tools designed specifically for the automotive industry. In many cases, we’re finding new ways to adapt tools originally designed for completely different industries. Whether it’s AI-powered inspection systems, ultrasonic noise generators built for natural gas, or enhanced soapy water solutions, the
end result is the same: better efficiency, more accuracy, and happier clients. At the end of the day, we’re not just keeping up with technology; we’re finding ways to use it to our advantage. And if you take anything from this, it’s that the right tools, both old and new, make the job easier, make your inspections better, and make your leak detection more reliable. That’s what makes the investment in these tools worth it, and why they’ll keep playing a bigger role in our shops moving forward.

Q: How did the tool function as far as saving you time?
A: Locking pliers are one of those things that are not needed every day, but are invaluable when you need them. These locking pliers have well-built, durable jaws that do a great job of gripping stripped fasteners.
Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability?
A: Locking pliers are one of those items that, when the need arises for them, you can’t go without. Whether removing a stripped fastener or simply holding one when a third set of hands is not available, they offer time savings that directly equate to increased productivity.
The 2-pc Patented Locking Pliers , No. FRLP100, from VIM Tools are made of CRMO (chromemoly steel) and feature bidirectional jaws. A traditional locking jaw with vertical cut grooves in the jaw allows the tool to bite onto the head of stripped fasteners to easily remove them. The set contains both a 5” and 7” pair in a nylon carrying pouch.
For more information, visit VehicleServicePros.com/55307237
Q: How easy was it to use?
A: Very. It has smooth operation and an easy release, which not all locking pliers have.
Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?
A: Packaging was great, the two pliers came well boxed for shipping and arrived in a woven nylon carrying case with a Velcro clasp.
Q: What features did you like?
A: I loved the aggressive and wellconstructed jaws. The teeth are welldefined and robust. The dual-purpose jaw design is a great feature that is not shared by many of the other locking pliers on the market. I also loved the release; other locking pliers have a secondary release that can be a challenge when the pliers are adjusted tightly.
Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?
A: The only thing I can think of to improve it would be more lubrication of the adjusting screw during the assembly process, so it has a little smoother action out of the box.
Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?
A: I used the larger set (FRLP7) to hold the busted ball stud on a sway bar end link, and it performed admirably. The smaller set (FRLP5) worked great for securing a jumper wire to the negative
post of a battery during some electrical diagnostics. There are a million and one uses for locking pliers.
Q: Have you used a previous version of this tool? How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?
A: Not this brand, but I own and have used many sets of locking pliers. The two features that set these VIM Tools products apart are the dualpurpose jaws and the ability to use a hex bit on the adjusting screw. This is a straightforward product that looks well-constructed.
Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?
A: I rate them a nine only because the adjusting screw on the small set was rough out of the box. With a little effort, it smoothed out right away, though.

Q: How did the tool/equipment function as far as saving you time?
A: Being able to use these wipes to clean our hands as opposed to having to walk to the sink saves a substantial amount of time. The wipes are capable of cleaning very dirty hands, but using these towels for the quick wipe downs that are often needed during the job saves quite a bit of time as well. In the past, we used shop rags for this purpose, but shop rags are expensive, and they don’t clean your hands nearly as well. We keep these towel tubs at each workstation.
Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability?
A: Now that we don’t have to visit the deep sink every time we need to clean
The FedPro Tub O’ Towels Heavy Duty Dual Texture Wipes feature two textured sides: a smooth side for everyday messes and detailing and a scrubbing side for tough and stubborn grime that needs extra effort and deep scrubbing to remove. our hands, we can keep working. We’re more efficient, and efficiency equals profitability.
Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?
A: There’s no setup time. Just open the tub and start using the wipes.
Q: How easy was it to use?
A: Just as easy as washing your hands with a good quality hand cleaner. Only faster.
Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?
A: The Tub O’ Towels are stored in a plastic tub with a lift cap that allows the user to remove a towel one at a time while preparing the next towel for use. The towels are soaked in a cleaning solution, so as long as the top is fitted tight, the towels should not dry out.
Q: What features did you like?
A: I like that each towel has a smooth side and a rough side. The rough side would be used for cleaning hands or surfaces with heavier dirt, grease, and/or grime. This rough side simulates the pumice found in good-quality hand cleaners. The smooth side can be used for lighter cleaning jobs, a quick hand wipe, or a quick surface wipe down.
Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?
A: It would be nice if there were more scent options.
Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for? Please provide a few specific examples.
A: We used these towels to clean parts, tools, and our hands for steering and suspension repairs, brake repairs, engine resealing repairs, etc. We used them for just about everything.
Q: Have you used a previous version of this tool? How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?
A: I have used the Scrubs in a Tub before, but these clean better.
Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?
A: I’d rate this product a 10 because they do save time, and they are the best cleaning wipes that I have used.

Q: How did the tool function as far as saving you time?
A: Plastic clips can be tricky to get dislodged; some of the commercially available tools don’t work well.
Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability?
A: These tools work on most OEM clips.
Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?
A: Zero setup, just remove the packaging.
Q: How easy was it to use?
A: These are super easy to use, very intuitive.

The tools include a dualdip ergonomic grip and are organized in an EVA foam tray. For more information, visit VehicleServicePros.com/55294756
Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?
A: It’s packaged well in a nice foam tray with a cardboard sleeve. I don’t imagine the sleeve will last long, but the foam tray is convenient for keeping them organized and tracking if one didn’t get put away.
Q: Was there a manual included? If so, did you use the manual, and was the manual easy to understand?
A: No manual supplied, and it is certainly not needed; these are super intuitive to use.
Q: What features did you like?
A: I liked that these don’t have huge handles like most of the commercially available clip prying tools I have owned or used. They are quite stout and don’t flex when prying.
Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?
A: I would suggest adding a long-handled tool with this kit, one with a simple angle on the end but with a handle double the length. I would make the kit a 6-piece kit by adding the long-handled version.
Q: What type of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?
A: I used this to pull dash trim pieces; these are thin enough to slip in place pretty easily. Engine bay plastic cover
clips and wheel liner clips, I find there is a tool in this kit that fits every clip I’ve encountered so far.
Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?
A: I have several of the commercially available sets of clip tools, and the Tool Aid clip lifters beat the others. Since the handles are not super fat, “screwdriver size” handles, that makes these fit and pry a lot better.
Q: Is there anything you had questions or concerns about in regard to the tool?
A: None, the tool is quite user-friendly and does exactly what it is designed to do.
Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?
A: A 9.5 — I think they are great tools and would bring a lot of value to any toolbox.

Q: Was there a manual included?
A: There is a small manual included as well as a QR Code, which leads to a video on how to use the tools when you scan it.
Q: What features did you like?
A: This extractor set is very unique compared to others that I’ve used. The flutes on the portion of the extractors that you drive into the hole that you have drilled are straight. They are not tapered, and they are not twisted. Both of these features are very helpful. Being straight, they don’t tend to swell the broken bolt and make it stick even tighter, and it also allows you to twist the bolt both directions to help work it loose. There is also a threaded sleeve on the extractor. After you have the bolt removed from the hole, you turn the sleeve to push the remains of the bolt off the extractor.
Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?
A: I used the extractors to remove broken bolts from cylinder heads, intake manifolds, and axle housings. I even used them to remove a broken-off small pipe in a plumbing project.
Q: Have you used a previous version of this tool?
A: I have used various bolt extractors before. Most of the ones that I have used have been tapered and/or onedirectional. This is a unique approach to the problem.
Q: Is there any way you could think to improve or add to this tool?
A: Having additional larger sizes could be useful sometimes. The extractors themselves are warranted, but the drill bits aren’t. Having two drill bits of each size included in the kit could easily save a lot of frustration if one were to break in the middle of a job.
Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?
A: Probably a solid nine. They are very nice, and definitely something different from what I have ever used before.

Running a successful mobile automotive repair business requires know-how and drive, but perhaps most importantly, a purpose-built workspace.
By Griffin Matis, Associate Editor
In the world of mobile automotive repair, efficiency is a necessity if you want your business to succeed.
For Dave Swyers, owner and operator of Indigo Hail Repair, that principle is reflected in every drawer, caster, and tray of his customized toolbox.
After more than two decades in the industry and five full-time seasons running his own business, Swyers has built a mobile setup that combines careful organization and clever upgrading to create the ultimate mobile toolbox.
Shop: Indigo Hail Repair
Location: Across the U.S.
Swyers’ career began in 2000 after graduating from Nashville Auto Diesel College. Though he started as a painter, health issues from chemical exposure led him to explore Paintless Dent Repair, a skill he had begun teaching himself during school. A chance encounter with a Dent Wizard truck
opened the door to a new career path, eventually leading him to international hail teams and training roles.
In 2019, inspired by independent contractors they worked with in Australia, Swyers and his wife launched Indigo Hail Repair full-time. Despite the challenges of COVID, a massive hailstorm allowed them to work right away from their garage with zero overhead.
“That first season gave us a solid foundation,” he says. “We’ve been traveling the country full-time ever since.”
Swyers began his journey with the Milwaukee Packout Rolling Modular Storage System, a stackable configuration with wheels and a trolley handle. While convenient in theory, the system proved cumbersome in practice.
“Every time I needed something from the bottom box, I had to unstack everything on top,” he explains.
That inefficiency led him to swap to a drawer-based PACKOUT setup that functions like a traditional toolbox but remains portable enough for life on the road.
“The drawers solved the biggest issue I had — access,” Swyers says. “It’s like having a full-size toolbox from my garage that I can take with me wherever I go.”
One of the standout features of Swyers’ setup is a wheel upgrade that addresses a common pain point for mobile techs. The original dolly casters, made of hard plastic, struggled under load and on uneven surfaces. Before the update, he’d even had his box tip over completely.
His solution was simple. After a quick trip to his local Home Depot, he picked up Everbilt 4” Polyurethane Top Plate Casters. All that was left was to
simply strip the wheels from the caster mounts, strip the wheels from the dolly, and then swap in the Everbilt wheels.
“Now it rolls smoother, handles weight better, and is much more stable in real-world working environments,” Swyers says.
Tool organization is another area where Swyers excels. He uses a Willie Quick top tray system that locks into the Milwaukee PACKOUT cleats, offering dedicated spaces for his mostused tools. “When I’m done with a job, I can glance at the tray and instantly tell if something’s missing,” he says. This visual inventory system helps prevent lost tools and streamlines his workflow.
When asked about his favorite part of the toolbox, the answer was easy: “The drawers, without a doubt.” They eliminate the need to unstack boxes and make the system feel like a true toolbox.
As for his favorite tool, Swyers highlights the Milwaukee 1/4” Cordless Hex Impact. “It’s compact, lightweight, and has replaced most of the bulkier tools I used to carry,” he says.
Swyers offers practical advice for technicians looking to build or upgrade their own mobile toolbox. First and foremost: make sure it fits in your vehicle.
“My first PACKOUT system had a suitcase-style handle that prevented it from fitting under my Roll-N-Lock truck bed cover unless I laid it on its side,” he recalls.
Expandability is another crucial factor.
“Milwaukee continues to release new add-ons and accessories, which makes it easy to evolve your setup,” Swyers notes.
Going with a less established brand may save money initially, but it can cost a technician flexibility in the future. It all depends on what exactly you need from your workspace.
Swyers’ efficient ways aren’t just limited to his toolbox. The Swyers family was able to invest in a fifth-wheel RV, a 2019 Jayco Pinnacle, to make all of the traveling they do a little bit easier. It soon turned into another opportunity to simplify their day-to-day life.
After a devastating basement flood destroyed most of their belongings, the couple embraced minimalism, sold their house, and committed fully to RV living.
“It’s been a game-changer,” Swyers says. “We’re seasonal workers, usually on the road from March through November, so having our own space with our dogs, our bed, our kitchen, and our tools has made the job much more comfortable and efficient.”
Today, they continue to work hail seasons across the U.S. while building a future in farming on a small property in Bayfield, Wisconsin, that will no doubt have the most well-organized tool collection in the area.
