‘What if I don’t have an automotive background?’

Many mobile tool distributors actually use this to their advantage when selling tools.

When I first began my career with Professional Distributor, the extent of my “automotive background” included putting gas in my car and changing my windshield wipers. Honestly, I had no idea the profession of “mobile tool distributor” was even a thing. Inevitably when attending family gatherings or meeting new people, the question of “So how did you end up in that job with no automotive background?” always comes up.

My answer is simple, I wanted a job where I got to tell peoples' stories and where I would constantly be learning. I’m sure, like me, those of you who weren’t technicians before becoming distributors have been asked a similar question, and based on the answers we receive whenever we ask this, your answer is simple too – you wanted a job that offered you the freedom of running your own business.

All this to say, I don’t think it matters what kind of background you had before entering this industry. You can be successful regardless. However, if you’re looking for a little extra guidance on how to make your business thrive, check out Alan Sipe’s Go Sell Something article for this month (pg. 38). He goes over all the tips and tricks on

how to use your lack of knowledge to your advantage.

“If you are really new on the truck, simply start a conversation with the technicians at your stops and explain that you are not a technician,” Sipe says, “you’re learning the business, and you would really appreciate their help in getting started.”

In my experience with this industry, everyone is happy to share their knowledge to help you continue to learn.

Also featured in this issue are the 2024 PTEN Innovation Award winners (pg. 12). So if you’re looking for something new to stock on your truck, look no further. The products we’re showcasing were hand-picked by a panel of judges out of over 100 submissions as 25 of the best new products to enter the industry in the past year.

Each product was judged on the following criteria:

• Time savings

• Simplifying a task

• Unique/new approach

• Improving a current tool

• Ease of use

If you’re not sure which products to add to your inventory, show the winners to your customers and see what they like. And if you do end up stocking any of these products, reach out to us at editor@vehicleservicepros.com to let us know!

Dual System with Dual Benefits

How TEXA’s Konfort 780 enhances AC service

Touchscreen: Its 10-inch color multi-touch HD screen has Glovetouch sensitivity and an industrial display. This gives technicians greater shop usability and allows a clear view of service status and operations being performed.

In the competitive world of automotive repair, shop efficiency is everything, especially when it comes to supporting air conditioning service for multiple vehicle types and years. With the full process of an A/C service taking around an hour — if there are no leaks detected — increasing the efficiency of this task becomes a focus for shop owners when considering quantity of daily service completed and monthly profit margins.

Enter the Konfort 780 — TEXA’s Dual Gas A/C service machine — that can boost shop profits by decreasing downtime to increase quantity of daily service. The fully automated system saves time by visually confirming all steps in the service process from the Konfort screen or Konfort smart app, so technicians are maximizing their shop time with other vehicle repairs.

Revolutionary Dual System Design

The Konfort 780 is the only true dual-system machine. Other dual gas machines have both R134a and R1234yf running through the same hardware and system lines, while TEXA’s Konfort 780 has two separate internal systems for recovery, recycling, and recharging.

Because there are two separate systems, there is no need to flush the system and lines when changing the refrigerant for new vehicle service. Technicians can easily and quickly transfer from an older Heavy Duty Truck to a newer European car. This creates less contamination and waste, while increasing the efficiency of the refrigerant recovery process.

Cutting-Edge Features

The Konfort 780 boasts a broad range of comprehensive features:

Fully Automatic: The machine itself uses fully automatic functions — automatic compensation recharge line length, automatic management of non-condensable gasses, and automatic maintenance alarms — to diagnose maintenance areas.

Konfort App: To ensure ease of use, the machine can communicate with Android and iOS smartphones through the Konfort APP. This gives technicians the ability to follow the machine's progress remotely, allowing them to perform other tasks while the machine is working.

Wi-Fi Connectivity: The machine allows wi-fi connectivity so that technicians can print reports and connect to the myTEXA portal for saving reports to shop systems, as well as receive remote technical assistance as needed.

Konfort 780 is designed to work seamlessly on a wide range of vehicles, including heavy-duty trucks. The machine has an integrated vehicle database that offers information on the latest original equipment manufacturer diagnostics.

Because the machine uses wi-fi, it can constantly update its software and firmware. Ensuring that it is always delivering reliable and accurate OEM information across vehicle types.

Providing Solutions

At TEXA, providing multi-brand diagnostics and A/C recharging solutions to vehicle technicians is of the highest importance. The Konfort 780 is just one example of how TEXA considers and meets customer needs when creating products.

DECODING diagnostic tools

A distributor’s guide to oscilloscopes, borescopes, and multimeters.

Some of the most important tools in an automotive technician’s toolbox are their diagnostic test equipment. Unfortunately, these tools also tend to be the most technical. For distributors who started off as technicians and then got into the tool-selling business, diagnostic test equipment poses less of a problem. However, for those without that background, it can be difficult to know which tool is used for what and what tool will be best to help their customers get their repairs done quickly and efficiently. In this article, we’ll be looking at a few types of diagnostic test equipment – oscilloscopes, borescopes, and multimeters – and discussing what these tools do and how to get the right tool into the hands of your customers.

Mac Tools distributor Jim LaJoy is one of the lucky distributors with the inside scoop on some of these more complex tools. Before he began his journey as a mobile tool distributor five years ago, he worked as a technician for around 25 years. LaJoy notes that he was often on the road in the service van during the winter months and other “yucky” weather.

“The older I got,” he says, “I didn’t want to do it anymore.”

He and his wife, Nancy, decided it was time for a change. This decision happened to come at the perfect time, as LaJoy’s tool distributor was retiring, freeing up the Windsor, Ontario area for a new Mac Tools route.

LaJoy hits up a variety of stops in Windsor and Essex County including independent shops, dealerships, truck shops, and body shops. Regardless of the type of shop he’s at, he knows that when it comes to selling any sort of diagnostic test equipment you have to understand what the technicians are doing, what they’re currently using, and how it compares to what you have on your truck. To gain this knowledge, it’s best to start with the basics.

KNOW WHAT YOU’RE SELLING

With an inventory that covers everything from sunglasses to hammers to ADAS calibration equipment and more, distributors are expected to have

a basic knowledge of a wide range of tools. Some are more simple and selfexplanatory while others require a bit more research.

Oscilloscopes

Starting off with oscilloscopes, Randy Dillman, vehicle manufacturer account manager for Pico Technology, explains this tool is ideal for “providing diagnostic analysis for failures related to starting and changing, sensors, actuators, communications networks, engine mechanical performance, pressurized systems, NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) complaints, and much more.”

These tools are also known as lab scopes and are available as a stand-alone product, typically integrated with a scan tool or as a PC-based product.

Pico Technology’s oscilloscopes are PC-based, and their latest oscilloscopes, the PicoScope 4225A and 4425A, offer many features your customers may be interested in:

• A sampling rate of 400 MS/s and 12-bit (16-bit enhanced) resolution to provide clear, accurate waveform detail

COVER STORY

• 20 MHz bandwidth to provide the capacity to test popular high-speed vehicle communications networks

• 250 M sample memory for longduration captures helpful to diagnose intermittent faults

Dillman notes that one of the biggest benefits of using an oscilloscope is, “They remove the guesswork and unneeded parts changing that flow charts often lead to.”

Borescopes

Moving on to borescopes, ANSED Diagnostic Solutions’ National Sales Manager, Todd Haner, explains that “Today’s borescopes allow a technician to inspect, record, and view components in restricted applications virtually eliminating the need to completely disassemble assemblies to view hidden objects or to inspect internal components.”

This tool can help save technicians time therefore increasing the shop’s profitability. Borescopes are also sometimes called inspection scopes or, depending on the tool’s capabilities, video scopes. Haner notes that borescopes with photo and video functionality can also provide a way for shops to share diagnostic procedures and

findings with their customers.

ANSED’s latest borescope, the No. DVSK-39ART, offers a variety of features for technicians to utilize, including:

• A high-definition (HD) digital scope monitor coupled with a 3.9mm HD digital articulating probe to deliver image clarity and unlimited inspection possibilities

• The super flexible 3.9mm articulating probe is one of the smallest IP67rated 360-degree articulating probes on the market

• The digital camera and adjustable LED lights are located at the end of the probe positioning these features in the work area

A borescope can be used for a wide array of automotive applications, such as A/C and heater ductwork, blend doors, exhaust manifolds, pistons, valve systems, cylinder walls, and much more.

“Borescope applications are unlimited,” Haner says.

Multimeters

When it comes to multimeters, Dave Barden, senior manager of technical sales and training specialist for Power Probe, explains that because “…everything’s become electronically controlled, the only way to diagnose those [components in a vehicle] is with the proper test equipment that can measure your voltages and your amperages and your resistances and those currents.”

The Power Probe DM300 Auto multimeter offers an extended range for reading current up to 30A directly.

The latest oscilloscopes from Pico Technology feature a sampling rate of 400 MS/s and 12-bit (16-bit enhanced) resolution to provide clear, accurate waveform detail.

Multimeters are the equipment necessary to run these tests.

“Anything that can give you a tangible measurement or reading is going to be more accurate than just an on-andoff indicator,” Barden says. “[Multimeters offer] greater accuracy, reliability, and repeatability.”

In Power Probe’s newest multimeter, the DM300 Auto, they are continuing to push its functionality beyond the typical multimeter functions like checking battery voltages or sensor resistance. A few of the tool’s features include:

• The meter is a CAT 3,000 voltmeter, meaning it’s hybrid-safe and has all your multimeter functions, as well as things like starting system checks and charging system checks

• Offers extended range for reading current up to 30A directly

• Has the ability to read current across a fuse just by measuring across a fuse

GET THE RIGHT TOOLS IN YOUR CUSTOMERS’ HANDS

Oscilloscopes, borescopes, and multimeters are all necessary parts of a technician’s diagnostic test equipment line-up.

As Mac Tools distributor LaJoy sees it, “[The equipment] just helps

[technicians] with their everyday job. It makes it easier with all this new technology. It’s like you can’t even change a set of windshield wiper blades on a car unless you have a scan tool.”

When you have tools like these that are more “needs” as opposed to “wants” for your customers, the only thing you really need to figure out is how to ensure you’re getting your customers the right tool for their needs.

Find the sales

Price plays a large role in people’s considerations when making a purchase. Anything you can do to help cut costs for your customers could aid in you making more sales. LaJoy notes that utilizing the sales featured in the flyers can be a way to encourage your customers to purchase some of those tools with higher price tags.

“With the way the economy’s been the last few years,” LaJay says, “everybody’s kind of penny pinching a little bit…I find they wait till [the tool] comes out in the flyer to purchase it.”

Understand how the tool is being used When trying to understand what tool to sell your customer, Pico Technology’s Dillman says this should be your first

question, "What is the primary need and environment it will be used in?”

For example, due to PicoScopes being PC-based, he notes that a native Windows 10 or 11 computer is needed. The computer also needs to have sufficient processor speed and memory for users to effectively use the tool. It’s important to ensure the environment the tool will be used in fits the tool.

Similarly, Power Probe’s Barden notes you’ll want to be aware of what sort of work your customers are using the tool for. Some may need a top-ofthe-line tool while others may be just as happy with a more inexpensive option, and some may want both.

“You don’t wanna get [your customer] into something that’s gonna be too overly complicated,” Barden says. “If he doesn’t understand it, he can’t use it, and he’s not gonna get results from it.”

Accessories are another factor to consider in how the tool is being used. For multimeters, your customers may need a different type or length of probe, alligator clip-ins, or a back probe adapter in order for the tool to best meet their needs.

Don’t make assumptions

Never assume that just because your customer already owns a piece of equipment that they’re happy with it or aren’t looking for an update or an accessory for it.

“Technicians want to know ‘what’s new’ when a distributor visits a shop,” Haner says. “Don’t wait for your customer to ask you, or your competition might beat you to the sale!”

Overall, when trying to help a customer get the best tool for them, LaJoy advises to just ask them what they’re looking for.

“I’m not really a pushy salesman,” LaJoy explains. “I’m just…trying to give them what they need, and I want the guys to be happy and satisfied with what they’ve purchased.”

The impact of electric vehicles on the automotive market

Steps to help prepare your shop for electric vehicles.

As you’re aware, the automotive fleet has been evolving with the rise of electric vehicles (EVs). For some states, like California, this trend has been happening for some time at an accelerated rate. For those of us facing this technology change for the first time, it may be intimidating but it may also introduce several opportunities. Within this article, we’ll explore a wide list of considerations you can use to prepare for this new vehicle platform.

UNDERSTANDING EV TECHNOLOGY AND MAINTENANCE

It’s true, EVs, with their simpler drivetrains, require a different maintenance program than what their ICE (internal combustion engine) counterparts require. When you break it down to their core components, the electric motor, battery pack, and power electronics make up most of the vehicle. However, there is going to be a different level of diagnostic information and procedures available both within service information (SI) and on the various vehicle data busses than what you’ve been dealing with in the past. For those who have been early adopters, engaging with hybrid vehicles from the past, the road ahead is less blurry. And for those just hopping on the bandwagon, battery health assessment, software updates, and electrical safety are key.

It has been my experience that EV owners are under the impression that the vehicle doesn’t require any maintenance at all, and this presents a major opportunity for the service market. Most owner’s manuals can be found online through the vehicle manufacturer’s website. I recommend that you study the maintenance requirements for the growing fleet in your location to get in front of what’s required. You can use this information to better inform your current and/or future clients about helping their vehicles operate properly. For example, some vehicle manufacturers require the replacement of the desiccant bag within the refrigeration circuit at specific time intervals. Another tip I’d like to offer here is that you may want to peruse some of the online forums out there where many motorists hang out and discuss everything about these vehicles. You will be able to gather more

intel about various pain points, misconceptions, etc., and use this information to help deliver a higher level of service to your clients.

CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE AND PROTOCOLS

Possessing knowledge of various charging standards (Level 1, Level 2, DC Fast Charging, etc.) and their compatibility with different EVs is crucial for those delivering EV service. One of the bigger issues I see often is that for the most part, drivers don’t understand much on this topic. Battery preconditioning for DC fast charging is one of the main issues that comes to mind. Many aren’t aware that the battery needs to be brought to a specific temperature range to fully optimize the proper DC fast charge rate. I have had many discussions with motorists at DC fast charging stations complaining about a slow charge. When I inquire about how they arrived, (typically through their navigation system) they reveal the failure point. For most EVs today, using the NAV will allow the vehicle to recognize the fact that the onboard systems need to prepare the battery for fast charging which often requires heating the battery coolant loop.

In my opinion, possessing knowledge of Level 1 and 2 chargers today is essential to communicating and facilitating

not only troubleshooting charging issues but also advising clients on what they need for home charging.

HIGH-VOLTAGE SAFETY

Working on EVs introduces the risk of high-voltage exposure. If you read any OEM service information, you’ll find statements about how technicians must be trained in high-voltage safety before commencing service on any HV systems. The training should also include proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), dead-live-dead verification procedures, proper inspection of test equipment, proper handling of test equipment, isolation of electrical circuits, and emergency response to electrical incidents (Figure 1).

ASE has a new EV support system called xEV Safety Certifications. This statement comes from ASE’s website (ase. com/ev) explaining the certifications:

“These ASE xEV High-Voltage Electrical Safety certifications were developed to serve as a guide, sharing existing industry standards, concepts, and practices followed by individuals working in the automotive, truck, and commercial

electrical industry.”

On that page you’ll find that there are currently two levels of certification:

• EV Electrical Safety Awareness Certification (Level 1)

• EV Technician Electrical Safety Certification (Level 2)

I encourage you to research these and decide which one is best for you.

REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEMS, TIRES & ALIGNMENT

Regenerative braking presents challenges as well. Understanding how these systems work and what drivers should consider can lead to overall better vehicle energy efficiency and extended tire wear. Tire wear on EVs is a major concern and consumers need to be aware of how to properly drive their vehicle by controlling torque in both acceleration and deceleration. Working the throttle properly can realize big gains in energy efficiency and tire wear. Some EVs have selectable screens to display the true application of torque which can be leveraged to obtain data feedback on pedal application. One of

Figure 2 – Tesla heat-pump cooling system service mode page

the other items I’ve discovered is that many vehicles leave the factory with the wheel alignment values not supporting optimum tire wear. Performing an alignment audit at the vehicle’s first tire rotation can help consumers get more life out of their tires. Additionally, tire technology continues to evolve and in fact, one tire manufacturer has gone “all-in” on developing an EV-specific tire. Hankook’s iON line of tires has many new attributes and features specifically aimed at conquering the main issues affecting tire wear, vehicle rolling resistance, NVH, and more.

THERMAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS

EV battery performance and longevity are controlled through the battery management system (BMS) to help support optimum battery performance and life. Service personnel should possess knowledge of how important these systems are and their service requirements. Regular inspections of the thermal management components and fluid levels are important. If you ever find

» Secure regular, deep and semi-deep sockets all on one tray.

» 3-row trays available in 1/2”, 3/8” and 1/4” drive.

» Available as single tray purchase, or in 4 & 6 pack sets.

» All trays are molded from rugged ABS plastic to shrug off grease, chemicals, and other debris, and are built to LAST.

a low coolant level condition in a BEV, you need to resist the urge to top off the fluid because there could be an internal coolant loop leak. If this leak goes unchecked this could be very catastrophic for the vehicle. In fact, the large motor found on the early Tesla Model S and X vehicles has a design flaw where a leaking coolant seal within the drive unit can destroy the motor assembly (Figure 2). There are companies (Revolt Systems - revoltsystems.com/teslalarge-drive-unit-ldu-coolant-bypasskit-the-achilles-seal-fix/) out there selling an inexpensive retrofit kit that will eliminate the possibility of this leak from occurring.

Thermal management relies heavily on the refrigeration system as well. This is something that should be inspected and serviced periodically. As mentioned earlier, some manufacturers have a replacement interval for the desiccant which requires a system recovery, evacuation, and recharge. These manufacturers are utilizing heat pump systems (Figure 3) because they can deliver thermal performance at greater efficiencies. Possessing a deep knowledge of the operation of heat pump systems is essential for proper system evaluation.

SOFTWARE AND FIRMWARE UPDATES

Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) is a term you’ve likely heard, and this is how BEVs can improve their operation and performance. Tesla is one manufacturer that has proven how software updates can keep a vehicle’s operation, performance, and presentation fresh. I own a couple of Teslas and my six-year-old Model 3 has the same improved operational features found on current model year vehicles. Additionally, the service diagnostics available to the technician continue to improve and provide the service technician with great support tools all being delivered through the infotainment screen. Keeping the system up-to-date is important because the vehicle will be able to take advantage of the software engineering changes that support improved vehicle operation.

ADAPTING SERVICE FACILITIES

For the most part, many shops already have most of the tooling they need for basic EV maintenance. However, if you are planning to replace battery packs then you’ll likely need additional lifting and support devices. And in addition to the training mentioned earlier, you’ll

Chase out damaged threads without undercutting good threads

Rethreading taps and dies are highly tempered for strength and durability

likely want to invest in the proper measurement tools such as high voltage insulation testers, a milliohm meter (Figure 4), and scan tools with enhanced EV support such as the Autel EV Diagnostic Kit (Figure 5) which allows you to interrogate a battery pack without it being able to communicate with the vehicle — think sourcing used battery packs and how you can assess a used unit.

MARKET OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

In some regions of the country, there is a rapid growth of EVs which presents new business opportunities for automotive service professionals. Expanding services to include BEV maintenance and repair can open new revenue streams. Additionally, the used car market presents challenges such as the condition of the high voltage battery since it is the most significant and most expensive component to replace on BEVs today. Battery assessment is one of the biggest concerns consumers have when it comes to purchasing a used BEV. While some OEMs provide an indicator of battery state-of-health (SOH) through their BMS, the reading is often inaccurate. Companies are working on new tools, equipment, and software in pursuit of generating knowledge on battery assessment. The Autel EV Diagnostic Kit provides a technician with a plethora of tools and battery assessment software for reading BMS data.

ReJoule (rejouleenergy.com) is a company that I have been working with in a pilot testing program where we are assessing battery SOH through a special DC charger which is performing a 10-minute advanced battery health check via a technique called Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) testing (Figure 6). This EIS test can provide more accurate battery health readings that can then be used to optimize battery maintenance and replacement and provide transparency for used EV transactions. We are running a pilot data collection test by running characterization testing on several dozen popular BEVs to assess battery health.

CONCLUSION

Electric vehicles present challenges and opportunities, but for those who have the right market, it may make sense to gear up and make the transition to support BEVs in your shop.

A third chance at life

It was like fate when the ad for a 2013 Freightliner M2 fell into the hands of Cornwell distributor John Patterson Jr.

When Cornwell Quality Tools distributor John Patterson bought his current truck, a 2013 Freightliner M2, it had already had two previous owners in under three years. At the time, Patterson was driving around a 2007 Bush C5500 truck. When the ad went up for the Freightliner, Patterson had just begun considering custom ordering a new truck.

“It was one of those situations where it was just kind of like the right place, right time,” says Patterson.

Equipped with a Cummins diesel engine, Allison transmission, and a Spicer rear end, the Freightliner was too good to pass up.

“My father is a diesel [technician] by trade,” says Patterson. “When I explained all that to him, he said, if I don’t buy it, I’m an idiot.”

CUSTOMIZED TO FIT

Since 2007, Patterson has been on the road in Northwest Baltimore County selling tools. He sells to a variety of places, from mom-and-pop shops to dealerships and even a bus depot.

When looking for his new truck, Patterson wanted to make sure whatever he bought had more room than his previous truck. That, along with more reliability, was exactly what the Freightliner offered.

Typically, the kind of truck Patterson drives only has one shelf for the toolbox opening, so he custom-ordered a second one for additional tool storage and built some of the displays himself.

“I built the bulk of the display on the top shelf myself,” explains Patterson.

He also added a custom cordless tool display for all the Milwaukee tools he carries. The display can hold around 26 tools at a time. Patterson estimates that around 25 percent of his shelf for the whole truck is just Milwaukee tools.

ORGANIZE WITH INTENTION

After working in retail for most of his life, Patterson has a knack for keeping things organized. On his truck, he likes to organize products by their type/category, keeping things like diagnostic or brake servicing tools together.

“Every shelf has an area that specializes in what I sell,” Patterson says. “There [are] advantages to moving stuff around.”

One advantage that Patterson has noticed when he switches the placement of products is that it encourages his customers to look at things that they might not normally go for. If they’ve come to expect their go-to tools to be in one spot, then they’ll only ever go straight to that area.

At 20’, it can be hard to utilize the space to its fullest potential, but Patterson manages to do it well.

SHARING WISDOM AND LOOKING FORWARD

With 18 years as a distributor under his belt, Patterson understands the ins and outs of this industry. He encourages distributors who are looking for a new truck and have an opportunity to purchase one to take that leap and make the upgrade.

“It’s only going to help their business,” explains Patterson. “That payment on a new truck might be scary, but the initial pain will go away.”

When he got the 2013 Freightliner M2, he saw a significant increase in his business just after the first month. More than that, he’s noticed that a customer’s opinion of a distributor can be affected by the state of their truck.

“Customers always want to do business with somebody successful,” Patterson says. “Part of that is having a nicer store to show up to their shop.”

Eager to make improvements to his truck where he can, Patterson plans on rewrapping his truck from an older Cornwell wrap to a newer Cornwell wrap this year.

You don’t have to use the tools to sell them

Sometimes not having an automotive background can actually work to your advantage when selling tools.

If you read this column regularly you know that I’ve been selling hand tools since 1977 and although I’m mostly retired I still consult companies who are trying to get their products on your truck and in the hands of your customers. In those forty-seven years, I’ve trained and had literally hundreds of salespeople reporting to me at one time or another.

A fact that has always intrigued me is that many of the most successful salespeople I’ve worked with don’t know which end of a screwdriver to use or could care less about how to build or fix anything using the hand tools they sell.

So, let’s dig in and talk a bit about how to succeed as a mobile jobber if you’ve never been a tech and if you too have no idea how to install a water pump or exactly where the water pump is.

USE YOUR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE TO YOUR ADVANTAGE

You’re not the Lone Ranger! There are a good number of mobile jobbers who came from a corporate or another non-technical industry position, wanted to get into their own business, looked into the available franchises, and chose the automobile aftermarket as an opportunity for them to succeed. And with the 2024 Aftermarket Profile saying 84 percent of the shops and technicians buy from a mobile jobber, this industry is a good bet for success.

Surprisingly you can use this lack of knowledge to your advantage. Actually, now that I think of it, any jobber experienced or not may find some of these ideas helpful.

First and foremost, do not adhere to the old adage, “Fake it until you make it.”

It will take about a New York second for an experienced technician to see through your baloney and either call you on it or just not ever buy from you. If you don’t know, don’t pretend you do.

By and large, people want to help, so man-up and ask for it.

If you are really new on the truck, simply start a conversation with the technicians at your stops and explain that you are not a technician, you’re learning the business, and you would really appreciate their help in getting started.

Simple questions like:

• “Could you tell me what tools you recently bought from my predecessor?” I know that if the previous jobber on your route kept good records you may already have the information but ask anyway. The objective here is getting them to talk to you about themselves and their tools.

• “Could you show me some recent tools you purchased from any of the mobile jobbers who call on you?” This too will relax the customer and allow them to brag somewhat about

all the stuff they own. Just like a golfer with new clubs or a hunter with a new rifle people love to tell others how smart or cool they are. Additionally, this will give you a good idea of how locked into the competition this prospect is.

• A really good conversation starter is, “We recently came out with this new XYZ tool (have something new in your hand) could you explain how you might use this?” You will probably already know the answer, but it gets a conversation going.

• “Could you tell me what you look for in your mobile jobbers?”

• “Do you prefer to talk on the truck or here in the shop?”

Anything to get the tech thinking and talking to you is the best first step. And in reality, they most likely really don’t care if you know one end of a vehicle from another.

TRY USING “THE NEW GUY CLOSE”

As a newbie on the truck, you will find yourself giving a presentation that doesn’t go so well. This is the perfect time to use one of my favorite closing techniques…The New Guy Close. You use this closing technique when the demo is done, and the customer has said no. You simply say, with your tail a bit between your legs, “Mr. Prospect, as you know, I am pretty new at this, and I respect that you are not going to buy my whatever. I know this is a good

product, and I know my company sells a lot of them. Could you help me by letting me know how I could improve my presentation skills and what I missed when giving you this presentation so the next time I will do better?”

You will be amazed how most people will open up and let you know

what you did right and where you could improve. And sometimes they will say something like, “I was hoping this product had this capability,” or some other point you missed and you reply … “I can’t believe I missed that feature/ benefit. My product does do that. Now that you know my product will meet

This column is coming out right in the heart of the 2024, highly charged presidential race, and I can’t stress this enough — absolutely nothing good for your business will ever come out of talking politics during a sales call! With about 30 percent of the population committed one way and about 30 percent committed the other way and 40 percent undecided you stand the chance of alienating about 70 percent of your customer base by voicing any political opinion on a sales call. Even if you are a die-hard believer in your candidate there is absolutely no revenue upside in voicing your opinion on a sales call. Even if you’re speaking with a technician who leans the same as you, the technician in the bay next door may go the other way and get PO’d just listening to you.

Simply say “I really don’t like talking about politics at work. Have you seen our new XYZ tool?”

And yes, this includes bumper stickers, political shirts, and hats.

your needs do you want to buy it?”

It really doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned professional jobber or new on your truck last week. Make your calls, present your products, keep your promises, don’t discount your products, and ask for the order.

Now….Go Sell Something.

Routing the storm

Getting people’s attention is a standard part of sales, but for this Mac Tools distributor, it means a whole lot more than that.

With over 30 years of experience in the tool industry, Mac Tools distributor Robert Tolbert has driven more roads and routes than most people can imagine. His career has brought him across the country under a number of different flags, but he’s happy to call both Louisiana and Mac Tools his home.

His route takes him to a variety of stops across the southern states. “I’ve got farmers, I’ve got local independents, I’ve got dealerships,” Tolbert says. “And I get way out in the cornfields and all the way into traditional truck stops, so I see a little bit of everything.

“It’s a wonderful life, and it’s not a business, it’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle,” he says. “And with how I’ve chosen to do it, I’m always loud about anything I do.”

ALL THE BUZZ

True to his word, he’s never hard to spot. When he’s at one of his stops, his truck is lit up and blaring music. He’s never been shy with promotions either, giving everyone who steps on the truck a raffle ticket.

“I’ve got customers bringing their wives and their children getting free tickets,” he explains. “I said, ‘Well, that’s just more chance to win!’ ... and heck, they’re bringing the supervisors and managers and owners ... that have never been to my truck, but they’re coming to get a ticket because it’s all the buzz.”

Still, Tolbert's even easier to see than his truck. He’s been wearing pink every day of the year. Each day brings a new piece of pink and a new post on his Facebook celebrating it. It all started a few years ago in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, when he did 31 interviews with people with breast cancer about their stories.

“I got an education, a fast one ... so that started my fire to keep doing something with breast cancer,” he explains.

This year, he thought, “I’m just going to wear something pink.” He threw on a pink jacket and shared a photo as the first of many posts. Since people with breast cancer are dealing with it every day, he’d wear pink every day to send them a message of support and recognize their journey.

STOPPING THE STORM

By now, his customers have come to expect a new look every time he stops by. His bold outfits are proof of how genuine a connection he feels with his customers.

“It’s just having relationships like that that go far and beyond your regular technicians,” he explains. “Heck, I’ve got more women right now owing me money on my tool truck because of this pink thing because they feel just as important now because I don’t leave them out.”

That’s also why the more outrageous the outfit, the more at home Tolbert feels in it in public.

“Everybody’s got a storm in their life, and if I can get two minutes of that person’s time ... and [my outfit] makes him stop and think and laugh or smile or come up to me and say something, I stopped that storm in their life for a minimum of two minutes while we’re talking.

“And if I can do that every day of my life, I can go to bed just absolutely loving life,” he says. “It’s something that this job and this franchise and being in this business for yourself allows me to do.”
