‘It’s like quicksand — but in a good way’

CICERO REFLECTS ON 43 YEARS IN THE TIRE INDUSTRY By

Mike Manges

W

ithin a matter of seconds, any one of us can probably list half a dozen businessrelated problems that keep us up at night. (Yes, this phenomenon even applies to tire magazine editors.) Finding good people to staff your stores, working around price hikes, navigating supply chain issues, developing new customers — all of these concerns take up a good chunk of your time and “head space” and rightfully so. Human nature being what it is, it’s sometimes easy to focus on the negatives while overlooking the many good things about our business. I was reminded of this a few weeks ago during a conversation with Manny Cicero, who retired on June 30, capping a 43-year career in the tire industry. It isn’t often that a retiring executive from a tire manufacturer makes himself available for an on-the-record conversation about what he has seen during his career. (Manny most recently was CEO of Triangle Tire USA and before that, held executive positions with Bridgestone Americas Inc., Alliance Tire Americas Inc. and other companies.) He was gracious enough to candidly discuss what he initially described as “the good, the bad and the ugly” aspects of how our business has evolved over the decades. As we talked, it quickly became apparent that the good outweighed the bad. In fact, nothing “bad” came up. And the “ugly” stuff was nowhere to be found! Manny talked about how he got his start in the tire industry as a consumer relations specialist after spotting a help wanted ad in the newspaper. “I was an English major and the world didn’t need more English majors at the time,” he quipped. (He quickly found out that “consumer relations specialist” was just a fancy name for “customer complaint department.”) Manny reflected on tire dealers he worked with over the years and how management styles have changed. “There were some legendary personalities” on the dealer side — “the Jim Berlins, the Alex Brewers, the Brad Ragans and so many others, who were big names at the time. “You learned a lot from some really smart businessmen and entrepreneurs. They negotiated like heck. But this was their business.” He touched on how consumer tire buying habits have shifted, “with brick-and-mortar giving way to online and online giving way to (business models) where there is no inventory. We didn’t even have an inkling this was possible 30 years ago.” Other things haven’t changed.

4

01_MTD_Contents-Masthead.indd 4

“Sometimes you do business with someone because of the trust you’ve built over the years. And I think there is a spectrum. Relationships appear to be stronger on the commercial truck tire side than on the consumer tire side. And relationships on the OTR tire side are especially strong.” (Manny has sold tires in all three segments.) Independent tire dealers, he added, remain the most important link in the sales chain. That won’t “It’s the relationships that change either, he said. make this industry special As the conversation wound and rewarding,” says down, I asked Manny, “What’s the Manny Cicero, who retired last month after a 43-year best thing about the tire industry?” career in the tire industry. His immediate response? “The people. There’s friendship. There’s continuity. “I once had a sales rep work for me,” he said. “He was quite a bit older and well past retirement age and was worried that I was going to let him go. So he came to me and asked, ‘Are you going to fire me?’ “I said, ‘Why would I fire you? You do a great job.’ But I did say, ‘Can you tell me when you’re thinking about retiring? I need to know so I can start looking for somebody.’ “And he said, ‘I’m never going to retire. Every day, I wake up and I talk to my best friends and I happen to sell them tires. Why would I retire?’ “I have two brothers who work in very different industries. One is in investment banking. His business is much more glamorous, but he always says, ‘You seem to be having a lot more fun.’ “The best thing about our industry is the people. It’s not the riches because there are more lucrative industries. It’s not the prestige because there are more prestigious industries. There are no airs about this industry. Most people don’t take themselves too seriously, with a few exceptions — but we know who they are! “People who leave our industry don’t leave for long. Many wind up coming back. It’s like quicksand, but in a good way. Once you get in it, you can’t get out — and most people don’t want to get out. “These are people who I will stay in touch with the rest of my life. And I don’t think there are a lot of people who can say that about the industries they’re in. It’s a special business.” Thanks, Manny, for reminding us of that. ■ If you have any questions or comments, please email me at mmanges@10missions.com.

Some, but not all, tariffs approved

VIETNAM AND TAIWAN IMPORTS INCREASED IN 2020, DESPITE PANDEMIC The government investigated the tire market and the factors in play in each region separately, so that results in different rates in each location. And in each region, certain tiremakers served as primary respondents as the case proceded, so that usually earns them their own separate rate. If not listed, tiremakers fall into the “all others” rate category.

IMPACT ON THE INDUSTRY

Four regions that have seen significant increases in tire production since the imposition of tariffs on PLT tires from China will now be penalized with tariffs at the U.S. border.

M

ost of the proposed tariffs on passenger and light truck tires imported from South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam are here to stay for the next five years, but tiremakers in Vietnam caught a big break at the final step in the investigation process. When the International Trade Commission (ITC) voted on June 23 whether or not to approve the final tariff rates that had been set a month earlier by the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), all five members of the ITC voted to terminate the anti-dumping duty investigation related to tires from Vietnam. The decision erases a 22.30% antidumping fee on all PLT tires coming into the U.S. from Vietnam. The commissioners maintain those tires from Vietnam are still benefiting from subsidies from the government in Vietnam, so they’ll still be subject to countervailing tariffs, ranging from 6.23% to 7.89% depending on the brand. The ITC otherwise approved the imposition of anti-dumping tariffs on passenger and light truck tires from South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. We’ll learn more of the “why” they did what they did in late July when the commissioners release their standard follow-up report. It’s due July 28th. The ITC’s vote followed the DOC’s decision on May 24 to adjust some of the

8

02_MTD_News-Numbers.indd 8

proposed tariff rates, though the agency maintained its preliminary position that PLT tires imported from the four regions were being dumped in the U.S. at belowmarket prices. And because of that, the government believes they should be subject to tariffs. The penalties and dumping rates range from 14.62% to as high as 101.84%. Tire manufacturers and importers from Taiwan will pay the highest rates. Here’s a look at the final rates:

ANTI-DUMPING RATES: SOUTH KOREA: Hankook & Co. 27.05% Nexen Tire Corp. 14.72% All others 21.74% TAIWAN: Cheng Shin Rubber Ind. Co. Ltd. 20.04% Nankang Rubber Tire Corp. Ltd. 101.84% All others 84.75% THAILAND: Sumitomo Rubber (Thailand) Co. Ltd. 14.62% LLIT (Thailand) Co. Ltd. 21.09% All others 17.08% VIETNAM COUNTERVAILING RATES: Kumho Tire (Vietnam) Co. Ltd. 7.89% Sailun (Vietnam) Co. Ltd. 6.23% All others 6.46%

South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam are among the largest tire exporters to the U.S., and since tariffs were levied against passenger and light truck tires from China, they have been among the fastest growing tire importers to the U.S. Conditions with the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted that somewhat, but Vietnam and Taiwan still both increased consumer tire imports last year over 2019, according to MTD research.

HOW RATES CHANGED

There were slight alterations and recalculations, but since the preliminary tariff rates were published on Dec. 30, 2020, for the most part, the DOC didn’t make drastic changes. In South Korea, Hankook & Co.’s rate dropped from 38.07% to 27.05% , while Nexen Tire Corp.’s rate increased slightly from 14.24% to 14.72%. The “all others” rate dropped from 27.81% to 21.74%. In Taiwan, Cheng Shin Rubber Ind. Co. Ltd’.s preliminary rate was 52.42% and it dropped by more than half to 20.04%. Nankang Rubber Tire Corp. Ltd.’s rate went the other way, from 98.44% to 101.84%. The “all others” rate slipped slightly to 84.75% from 88.82% In Thailand, Sumitomo Rubber’s preliminary rate was 13.25% and increased slightly to 14.62%, while LLIT (Thailand) Co. Ltd.’s rate was 22.21% and landed at 21.09%. The “all others” rate in Thailand was 16.66% and edged up slightly to 17.08%. In Vietnam, the rates were unchanged. — Joy Kopcha MTD July 2021

Monro’s next stop: the Southwest Company will build if it can’t buy

M

onro Inc. has its eyes on the southwestern United States and the nation’s third-largest tire dealership, which is known for its aggressive growth-by-acquisition strategy, now says it’s ready to build stores from the ground up if it can’t find properties to buy in this market. The company’s new CEO, Mike Broderick, told investors as part of the company’s recent quarterly report that mergers and acquisitions will continue to be “very relevant” to the company’s growth. “We’re missing a lot of space out in the Southwest. That will be a focus. Where we have opportunities to fill in, we will. I’d also like to introduce the fact that we’re going to start looking at greenfields as an opportunity to move faster in markets if we can’t find viable M&A opportunities. We’ll start building our own stores.” Monro already has made significant headway in California, acquiring 96 stores in two years. It entered the state in March 2019 when it bought 40 Certified Tire & Service Centers Inc. in San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles. Before the end of the year, the company added nine more locations: six Skip’s Tire & Auto Repair Centers and three Lloyd’s Tire & Auto Care stores. Then in 2020, it was Allen Tire Co. joining the fold, with 17 stores in southern California. And in April 2021, Monro finalized the purchase of the 30 locations of Mountain View Tire & Service Inc. Broderick told investors that building stores to fill out the company’s footprint makes sense. “There’s a lot of reasons for it. We have a national warranty. We want to stay convenient to our customers. So where we can’t find M&A, we would look at (building.) “Looking at the financials, obviously, we’re going to be stewards of the P&L and putting stores where we can get the best return for the investment. When you look at the Southwest, there seems to be some open space for us to efficiently do greenfield.” How all of those new stores will be branded is yet to be seen. Brian d’Ambrosia, chief financial officer, says the company is “looking at the brand

As Monro continues its westward expansion, the company is also moving forward with its rebranding efforts to transform more auto service-heavy stores into tire-oriented stores.

portfolio. We’ve acquired the Mountain View brand, which is a strong brand out there. We’ll look at the role that brand is going to play on the West Coast. We have the Tire Choice (brand) out there currently, which is what we’ve rebranded some of our acquisitions with.” The branding ties into a companywide initiative that remains underway at Monro — the Monro.Forward plan. The company has already substantially renovated or rebranded 360 stores “in a number of key markets’’ around the U.S. That includes rebranding 115 automotive service stores into tire locations. d’Ambrosia says, “We continue to see outperformance of our rebranded and reimaged stores compared to our chain average.” The company invested $52 million and completed work on another 150 stores in fiscal year 2021 and plans to spend another $40 million to $55 million on the effort in fiscal year 2022. Broderick says the Monro.Forward strategy “literally touched every aspect of retail,” from staffing, training and payroll to product management, pricing and marketing. Improvements were made to in-store infrastructure, including telephone systems. “My job right now is bringing these puzzle pieces together so that we can maximize the profitability from these investments. It’s all about execution at this point in time. The strategy is sound. The execution is really what’s going to separate us from being successful or not.” — Joy Kopcha MTD July 2021

“We have many retailers who are confidently selling Kenda as a first replacement in the aftermarket,” says Brandon Stotsenburg, vice president of American Kenda Rubber Co. Ltd.’s automotive division.

A

merican Kenda Rubber Co. Ltd. continues to expand its product portfolio in several rapidly growing segments. In this MTD exclusive, Brandon Stotsenburg, vice president of the company’s automotive division, discusses opportunities that Kenda sees. He also reveals steps that Kenda is taking to lessen the impact of tariffs on its consumer and light truck tires, plus supply chain challenges presented by shipment slowdowns.

MTD: Kenda has maintained a robust new product introduction schedule and continues to gain market share. What product segments are you focusing on and why? Where are the growth opportunities today and where will they be two to three years from now? Stotsenburg: We have focused on the larger and faster-growing segments that can demonstrate our value: ultra-high performance all-season, grand touring, premium, speed-rated CUV and SUV and more recently, light truck tire segments like A/T and the expanding R/T segment. We will be adding new sizes to both our Klever R/T and Klever A/T2 offerings this spring and plan to introduce a new Klever M/T in the near future. We anticipate that the light truck segment will remain strong for growth, but there will be increasing demand in two areas. Increasing hybrid and electric applications will change some of the

MTD: What actions are you taking to help mitigate the impact of tariffs on supply and pricing? Stotsenburg: Based on the announced rates, Kenda is reassessing its sourcing to maintain our value proposition. We continue to submit data as required by the U.S. Department of Commerce to support our position as a value brand, not a price brand. Kenda is moving forward with our plan to supply a complete product screen and continues to ship passenger and light truck products to the U.S. market from Vietnam, based on the parameters put in place. Ultimately, the Kenda brand is earning a more prominent position with consumers with our brand investments and, most importantly, with our Kenda dealers’ commitment to selling the Kenda product screen. We have many retailers who are confidently selling Kenda as a first replacement in the aftermarket. MTD: The transpacific shipping slowdown has created many supply chain complications. How has this impacted Kenda? Stotsenburg: As demand has continued to expand for Kenda and we are working hard to meet this need, supply is catching up. But the supply chain has struggled to meet demand. We are working very hard as a global company to adapt our supply chain to meet customers’ needs. One of the biggest hurdles has been the reduced availability of shipping and 40-foot containers, in addition to port congestion. In our conversations with a broad range of supply chain vendors, there projects to be continued shortages of equipment. Kenda will continue to invest in best practices to optimize the supply chain situation. Despite the stresses, we anticipate that (supply chains) will improve as we move through 2021. MTD July 2021

oodyear Tire & Rubber Co. finalized its acquisition of Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. on June 7, ahead of its initial projection that the deal would close sometime during the second half of the year. Goodyear says the acquisition creates “a stronger U.S.-based leader in the global tire industry.” Meanwhile, in China, the purchase of Cooper “nearly doubles Goodyear’s presence and increases the number of relationships with local automakers, while creating broader distribution for Cooper replacement tires through Goodyear’s network of 2,500 branded retail stores.” Goodyear expects to find $165 million in “run-rate cost synergies” within two years and says most of those savings will be related to “overlapping corporate functions and realizing operating efficiencies.” Goodyear Chairman, CEO and President Rich Kramer outlined three details about what to expect from the combined companies in 2021: • “We will continue our existing strategies for our brands, product portfolio, programs and promotions; • “We expect Goodyear and Cooper product launches will remain on track;

‘Tier-four is in chaos’

hipping delays, price increases and the impact of new tariffs are all having a big effect on the U.S. tire market, but all three hitting the industry at once is creating an especially chaotic situation in the lower tiers. Executives from Sumitomo Rubber North America Inc. (SRNA) broke down the chaos during the company’s June dealer forum. Matt Leeper, vice president of fourwheel sales for SRNA, says, “Tier-four is in total chaos.” He relayed the dilemma of a regional tire wholesaler who is struggling to manage his inventory. “He’s being solicited for orders from tier-four suppliers and he just wondered what to do. Some (had figured) increases into the cost, some of them had a sur-

charge and some of them seemed to have a price that didn’t consider any of it. But he didn’t want to order all the (lower-tier) stuff because he didn’t think he’d get it.” Leeper called that “an illustration of how difficult it is to procure tier-four (tires) in the current environment.” Unfortunately, shipping challenges aren’t expected to subside soon. Ron Papcun, SRNA senior vice president of operations, says there haven’t been signs of improvement in recent months. Container prices and the cost of moving a container both continue to increase and West Coast ports are setting monthly volume records. The latest projections are for the shipping and container crisis to last through the end of 2021. ■ MTD July 2021

Retail sell-out remains healthy DEALERS REPORT UNIT SALES INCREASES By

John Healy

R

ecent commentary from our dealer contacts indicates that consumer demand for passenger and light truck tires at the replacement level continues to climb compared to last year. The net number of respondents to our latest survey reported they saw a 6% increase in demand year-over-year. Our contacts noted that the increase in demand can be attributed to the “lapping” of the early months of the COVID-19 crisis, where some businesses at this time last year were still closed. Dealers also reported that economic stimulus checks have been a benefit as consumers continue to put more money into their vehicles. Retail sell-out remains healthy. Recently surveyed dealers reported unit sales increases of 5.7% last month versus May 2020, which is the second-largest yearover-year increase in sell-out trends ever recorded by our index. This follows the previous month, which saw record-breaking sell-out trends.

VOTE OF CONFIDENCE

Our latest survey reveals that tier-two brands continue to experience the most significant growth among our contacts, which has been consistent with previous months. This may be a sign that consumers continue to gain confidence in their financial outlook and are more willing to balance both performance and value when buying replacement tires.

We also note that tier-one brands have moved upwards in our rankings for the first time in 10 months, as this segment has been impacted most profoundly by COVID-19 shutdowns. Dealers have told us that inventory remains low, as tire manufacturers continue to push price increases through. As we have seen throughout the COVID19 pandemic, customers seem to change their preferences for certain tiers and brands of tires depending on the current situation. With high vaccination rates and broad reponenings throughout the country, we believe that more consumers will display a preference for tier-two brands. That said, we continue to believe that the pricing environment in North America will remain in-line with raw material costs and other market factors and tire manufacturers will continue to demonstrate discipline and control in their efforts to manage the trade-off between price and volume — with the continued goal of optimizing profit instead of market share. We also continue to be impressed by the extremely disciplined approach to production displayed by tiremakers, which enables global inventory levels to remain lean. In response, tire dealers and distributors are being tactical with their approach to inventory. This gives them the continued ability to capitalize on pricing spreads within the market, while remaining flexible in the face of additional price hikes.

RAWS CONTINUE TO CLIMB

Looking at raw material costs, the “basket” of raw materials needed to build a standard replacement vehicle tire has climbed 34.8% on a year-over-year basis, while also increasing on a sequential basis by 2.5%. This continues the trend of increasing raw material prices that began at the start of the year. Holding current spot prices flat would yield a 33.3% year-over-year hike in input costs during the second quarter of 2021 — up nearly 4% from the first quarter of the year. In assessing raw material price movements, we note that carbon black has seen its price increase for the fifth month in a row, with double-digit growth in both May and April. Crude oil prices experienced extreme cost pressures at the beginning of the pandemic, with average prices down 37% year-over-year, on average, through the end of 2020. This year, however, has been a different story as we begin to lap these cost pressures and the number of miles driven increases. Oil prices jumped 128% year-over-year in May. Meanwhile, natural rubber prices rose 63.3% in May, which marks strong doubledigit gains over the last 10 months. Synthetic rubber costs have increased, as well. However, price pressures on tire reinforcement items continue to track negatively yearover-year at a low- to mid-single-digit rate. Dealers remain upbeat in their outlook for the second half of the year, as overall miles driven continue to increase, consumers continue to invest more in their cars and economic stimulus continues to bolster consumer spending. ■ John Healy is a managing director and research analyst with Northcoast Research Holdings LLC, based in Cleveland, Ohio. s CEO of Discount Tire, Dean Muglia oversees the largest independent tire dealership in the U.S. With 1,100 total stores, Discount Tire is known for its traditional, “tires-only” model, but “I think you will see us experiment with other services more,” Muglia recently told MTD. The Scottsdale, Ariz.-based chain — which was founded by 2014 MTD Tire Dealer of the Year Bruce Halle — recently began selling and installing windshield wipers at its locations. “We recognize the world is changing fast and so are the needs of our customers,” says Muglia, who has been with Discount Tire for more than 30 years and in his current role since January 2020. In this MTD exclusive — Muglia’s first interview with a tire industry publication — he discusses why “nothing is off the table” when it comes to adding other services. He also discusses new and future markets for Discount Tire, the dealership’s ongoing investment in technology, how it’s preparing for electric vehicles and more.

Modern Tire Dealer 100 MTD: There’s a big push to accelerate the electrification of vehicles and that will have an impact on tire design and construction. What impact will electric vehicles have on independent tire dealerships? How is Discount Tire preparing for the all-electric future that people believe will materialize at some point? Muglia: We see electrification coming fast and autonomous vehicles probably a fast-follow after that. It’s going to change the landscape of the automotive industry. We don’t offer a full suite of (auto repair) services so we can be selective on those services that we do offer. Electrification is one area we can look at in terms of additional offerings. Certainly windshield wiper blades are something vehicles of the future will need. We’re taking the needs of consumers today and tomorrow into consideration. MTD: What’s your take on the current state of the retail tire market? Muglia: I would say it’s generally positive. We’re seeing vaccinations continue to roll out. We’re seeing states and economies reopen. There’s a lot of stimulus in the market right now from the government. People want to get out and do road trips. We’re starting to see gas consumption return to more traditional levels. There are a lot of positives. Now there are certainly some headwinds. Supply chain constraints are a bit of a headwind — getting product from overseas — but we’re managing through that. But overall, we see the second half of the year to be pretty strong for our industry. We’re pretty excited. ■

TBC EXECUTIVES DISCUSS GO-TO-MARKET STRATEGY By

T

BC Corp. has come a long way since its start in 1956. The company’s Tire Kingdom and NTB Tire & Service Centers chains have grown to encompass nearly 630 total outlets. And TBC continues to expand its Big O Tire LLC and Midas International LLC franchise networks. The firm’s management team also continues to evolve. Erik Olsen, TBC’s longtime president and CEO, stepped down last month, when former Michelin executive Laurent Bourrut took the company’s helm. Marty Krcelic, TBC’s executive vice president and the president and COO of TBC Brands, also retired at the end of June. Stepping into his role — along with expanded duties — is Geoff Doster. In this interview, Bourrut and Olsen elaborate on TBC’s strategy of focusing on its “core” businesses, what’s next for Tire Kingdom and NTB and more. (Editor’s note: The interview was conducted before Olsen retired from the company.) MTD: TBC sold 112 NTB stores to Mavis Tire Express Services Corp. in 2020. At the time, you mentioned that “further consolidation of the NTB footprint is consistent with our strategy to focus on our core markets.” Can you elaborate on that strategy? Olsen: As we execute TBC’s growth plans and strategies, we continuously analyze the assets in our portfolio and periodically fine tune them to drive superior performance in our core focus areas. TBC’s core focus areas are wholesale, franchised stores and company-owned retail locations. We are vertically integrated in the United States to leverage TBC Brands and National Tire Wholesale (NTW) to drive growth within the NTB, Tire Kingdom, Big O Tires and Midas network of stores. To drive superior performance, we will continue to focus our retail brands on high-growth, strategic geographies.

Consistent with that stated strategic action plan, TBC elected to further consolidate and focus NTB’s geographic footprint with the sale of the 112 NTB locations to Mavis. At that time, NTW and Mavis also entered into a distribution relationship. The cash from this sale allowed TBC to further invest in our core operating units.

Tire Kingdom is Florida-based and NTB has a much wider footprint.

Modern Tire Dealer 100 MTD: Will Sun Auto continue to target a mix of auto service chains and independent tire dealerships or will the company’s future mix be more tire dealership-heavy? Kneller: Our process is less about partnering with a company based on service or tire mix and more focused on the overall business fundamentals, including store format, market dynamics and the strength of the management team.

“There are over 100,000 repair shops in the U.S., so we view store growth opportunities as essentially limitless,” says Sun Tire & Auto Service CEO Frank Kneller. “Our focus is on finding high-quality businesses that are trusted within their communities.”

B Auto Service Inc., which last month rebranded as Sun Auto Tire & Service Inc., has been busy since the 2020 edition of the MTD 100 was published. This past October, the company acquired Tate Boys Tire & Service, a seven-location chain based in Oklahoma. The following month, it acquired Reliable Automotive, which is based in Texas. In December, the company bought three ServiceONE Automotive stores in the Houston, Texas, area. And in March 2021, it acquired Goodguys Tires & Auto Repair, an eight-store dealership based in Fresno, Calif. CEO Frank Kneller discusses what’s next for Sun Auto & Tire Service, which has 200 total stores, during this interview. He also explains why he is “encouraged by the resiliency” of the retail tire market and why Sun Auto views its own growth potential as “essentially limitless.”

28

03_MTD_MTD100.indd 28

MTD: How challenging has it been to integrate tire sales and service into Sun’s auto service chain acquisitions? Kneller: While all transitions are hard work, our team has developed a playbook to integrate acquired businesses, which includes considering the right service mix for each store and ensuring we can provide a complete repair solution for customers. In the case of Sun Devil, that business was built as a high-velocity service model and has unparalleled brand recognition in its markets, so we view tires as a more opportunistic addition. (Editor’s note: GB Auto Service acquired Sun Devil Auto Service in July 2020.) In other service acquisitions, we’ve been quicker to implement tires as a way to drive incremental traffic and in many cases, that is a natural transition as many of our customer managers have had experience running tire-forward stores in the past.

ire Discounters Inc. continues to expand its footprint. Earlier this year, the Cincinnati, Ohiobased company opened its 15th Columbus, Ohio-market store. Georgia has been another recent growth area for the dealership. Tire Discounters — which was founded in 1976 by Chip Wood, MTD’s 2020 Tire Dealer of the Year Award recipient — also operates in Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee and Alabama. In this interview, Jamie Ward, the dealership’s president and CEO, discusses what’s next for the family-owned company, including its franchise program, which MTD first reported on last year. The program is designed to appeal to smaller independent tire dealers “who don’t want to sell their business, but can’t spend the money on all of the initiatives needed to grow,” Ward told MTD at the time. “They can become part of our organization as a conversion of their current format. “We have a great brand and want to scale it,” he noted. “But we’re going to be very strategic and conservative.” MTD: Tire Discounters has consistently pushed into new markets and has grown its footprint to more than 140 locations across six states. Does the company have a store count goal in mind within its existing footprint? Ward: We put no limits on our growth. We are continually adding new stores within our footprint. Most recent examples

Modern Tire Dealer 100 Belle Tire has added more than 30 stores in Indiana over the last three years and recently entered the greater Chicago, Ill., market. “We want to continue to grow in contiguous markets, so Chicagoland was a natural fit,” says Don Barnes III, the dealership’s president.

llen Park, Mich.-based Belle Tire Distributors Inc. will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year. Between now and then, however, the dealership is focused on establishing a foothold in the Chicago, Ill., market, which it recently entered, while maintaining momentum in central and northern Indiana, where it has added more than 30 stores over the last several years. In this interview, Belle Tire President Don Barnes III answers the question, “Why Chicago?” He also discusses the key to the dealer-

ship’s rapid growth in Indiana, if Belle Tire plans to move into other markets and why he is “bullish on our industry” as demand for tires and auto service increases. MTD: It’s been an extremely busy year for Belle Tire. The company is continuing to build its presence in the Indianapolis market, which it entered a couple of years ago. And more recently, Belle Tire entered the Chicago market, which is brand new territory for the dealership. Can you bring us up to speed on what’s happening in Chicago and why that’s an attractive market for the company?

Barnes: We recently broke ground in Chicagoland. We’re really excited to enter our fourth state, Illinois, and (are) really excited to start having a presence in the Chicagoland market. (Editor’s note: Belle also has a presence in Michigan and Ohio.) We see the Chicagoland market as a very fragmented market with really no dominant player and we’re excited to bring our model: tires and service ... (and) really focusing on the customer experience to deliver a top-level experience for all of our customers and create more opportunities and create more jobs in the Chicagoland area. MTD July 2021

Modern Tire Dealer 100 ers are only going to treat our external customers as well as we treat them. MTD: You once said, ‘Retail is detail’ and it seems that certainly applies here. Barnes: ‘Retail is detail’ is probably my favorite line because it truly is. Whether you are in the tire business or you’re selling computers or TVs, any competitor can probably get 90% of the way there — or even 95% — but that last 5% or 10%... that’s what really separates the best operators or world-class operators. It’s attention to detail. Everything we do needs to be important because our consumers are judging us every day. We have to earn their business every time they walk in. MTD: Belle also has an extremely robust wholesale-distribution business. (Editor’s note: The company operates a distribution center near Cleveland, Ohio.) What has your wholesale business been like this year? What are you hearing from your wholesale customers?

36

03_MTD_MTD100.indd 36

‘There is greater certainty in the future and that’s really exciting.’ — DON BARNES III, PRESIDENT, BELLE TIRE DISTRIBUTORS INC.

Barnes: Our wholesale customers and our wholesale business have really ebbed and flowed with the market. As the market was down a year ago with COVID-19, so was our wholesale business, but as demand has picked up — just as Belle Tire has — so has our wholesale business. Really our concentration right now has been clearly about building more retail locations and recruiting, hiring and training people who will represent our brand well. MTD: Are you planning to enter any new retail markets during the rest of the year or into next year? Barnes: The market that we’re really focused

on right now is Chicagoland. We’re always looking at different areas in Michigan and Indiana to help augment or supplement the stores we have. But right now, the market that we’re most focused on in our growth is Chicago. MTD: What’s your take on the general state of the retail tire market as we enter the second half of the year? DB: I’m very bullish on our industry over the next six to seven months. Demand has been very strong. There have been challenges from the supply side. I think our manufacturers are working on things to get supply figured out. They want to participate as much as we do in this big push in demand, so I’m very bullish that demand will continue to be strong. COVID-19 pretty much seems done and over with. Obviously, more people are getting vaccinated and across different states, different restrictions are coming off, so there is greater certainty in the future and that’s really exciting. ■

INDEPENDENT TIRE DEALERS EXPANDED THEIR MARKET SHARE DURING 2020 Independent tire dealers remain the dominant force when it comes to replacement consumer tire sales in the U.S. and even gained ground during 2020 as pent-up demand broke loose during the second half of the year. According to MTD’s 2021 Facts Issue, independent dealers account for 65.5% of the U.S. consumer tire replacement market at the retail level. That’s an increase of 2.5% from 2019 levels. (In 2018, MTD estimated that independent dealers enjoyed 62.5% share.) Mass merchandisers lost share during 2020, driven in large part by the temporary, COVID19-related shutdown of Walmart Auto Care Centers, followed by a slower-than-anticipated

54

04_MTD_Top100Chart.indd 54

reopening of those outlets. At the end of 2020, it was estimated that mass merchandisers had 8% of the consumer tire replacement market — down from 10.5% just one year prior. Warehouse clubs also lost share during 2020, dropping from 8.5% to 8%. Auto dealerships (9.5%) and tire manufacturerowned stores (6%) managed to maintain their shares of the market at a flat level. Here’s a snapshot of how many outlets nonindependent tire store chains operated at the end of 2020, courtesy of MTD’s 2021 Facts Issue: Mass merchandisers: Walmart Auto Care Centers (2,582) and Sears Auto Care Centers (39)

Tire pricing Consumer tire prices continue to climb. And that includes the price of light truck tires.

J.P. Brooks

T

he past 16 months have presented the tire and wheel industry with extraordinary challenges. With COVID-19 vaccines rolling out and states and economies reopening, the U.S. tire industry has seen a dramatic recovery. However, we are hesitant to say that the industry is fully back to “normal.” The pandemic presented us with an unprecedented economic situation and recovery has proven to be fluid, as well. Fortunately, as we emerge from COVID-19, its economic damage seems to be far less permanent than the damage experienced during the national 20072009 downturn. Consumers are flush with extra money in the form of economic stimulus payments

56

05_MTD_Tire_Pricing.indd 56

and an increasing number are getting back on the road. However, pricing — not just in the tire industry, but in many other industries — remains in a state of flux. It’s hard to find any consumer product that has not increased in price recently. Used car prices have increased 7% in just the past few months. Lumber prices have skyrocketed. Even items like cereal and diapers have seen price increases. Retail tire prices have not been immune to volatility.

PASS ALONG OR ABSORB?

Beginning in early 2020, many tire manufacturers publicly stated that they would be increasing prices and we noticed a gradual increase of retail prices over the

course of 2020 and into 2021. In recent months, more tire manufacturers have announced price increases — with some manufacturers enacting multiple price increases since the start of the year. The reasons are many, including a combination of increased raw material costs, such as oil, as well as higher shipping expenses and other changing market conditions. To add to the equation, the industry is also suffering from supply chain issues — most notably with a global shortage of shipping containers. With many in the industry using a standard percentage mark-up based on brands and tiers — along with margins already being thin — we are seeing these cost increases being passed to consumers. Thanks to stimulus checks and many people returning to work, however, consumers seem to be absorbing the cost increases very well. To keep a pulse on the ongoing economic recovery, we wanted to look at the first half of 2021 in order to better understand the current state of the industry, specifically as it relates to retail tire prices. (The data presented in this article was culled from Jan. 1, 2021, to June 11, 2021.) But first, here’s some background on who we are, what we do and how we are able to gather and crunch those numbers. Fitment Group currently views and analyzes over four million retail tire prices on a weekly basis. This data is derived from a combination of brick-and-mortar retail shops, big box retailers and e-commerce/online retailers. In this exclusive analysis, we looked at major brands, tier-four brands or opening price point brands, popular sizes and pricing trends as they relate to the major marketing regions in the country.

BIGGEST GAINS BY TIER

So what did we find? The quick response may be a bit obvious — tire prices have continued to increase over the course of 2021. But this trend looks more consistent than the trend lines over the course of 2020, with the exception of the past few weeks, which have seen an increased spike in pricing. Fitment Group analyzed 10 popular tire sizes and found that on average, opening price point or tier-four tires have seen the MTD July 2021

highest rate of price increase — 11.1% — since the start of the year. The prices of mid-tier tires have increased at a 6.7% rate and brand name, tier-one tire prices have increased at a more modest rate of 2.1%. Choosing one size, 225/60R16, and looking across all tiers of tires and regions, we have observed that pricing for this specific size has increased by 3.9% since the first of the year.

58

05_MTD_Tire_Pricing.indd 58

Prices of tires of this size have averaged $72.06 at the opening price point, tier-four category since the first of the year and at press time, averaged in this same category at $76.70, which represents a 6.4% increase. In the tier-one category, tires in this size sold at $138.43 per tire, on average. That since increased to $144.18 at press time, which represents a 4.2% hike.

The Fitment Group also looks at tire pricing around the country by dividing the U.S. into nine granular census divisions and also rolling these markets up into four main regions. When looking at multiple sizes and steps, the Mountain region has the highest average tire price. We also found that the New England market has the lowest average tire prices — with an average price difference between the two regions of 9.7%. The four main regions — ranked from the lowest to the highest average prices — are as follows, in descending order: 1. 2. 3. 4.

West Region Midwest Region South Region Northeast Region

When we look at the data on a more granular level, we do see that the states of Washington, Oregon and California all trend to the lower price point, even though they fall into the West Region. That’s because the more heavily populated coasts tend to have lower average tire prices due to higher retail competition and less required transportation infrastructure. The most price volatility observed during the first half of 2021 has been on the Pacific Coast. We did see volatility in the West and Midwest at the end of April due to a slight overall price decrease, plus a price increase in the Northeast and a consistent, steady trend line in the South. Like many of MTD’s readers, we look to the rest of 2021 with a great sense of optimism. As the economy reopens, people will return to work and will be increasingly anxious to travel. Demand for tires will continue to rise. But so will tire prices, as manufacturers continue to hike their rates. Stay in tune with what’s happening in your market so your dealership’s prices are consistent with what the market is currently bearing. J.P. Mergers and Acquisitions

How big is too big?

THE SECRETS TO MANAGING STORE COUNT GROWTH By

Michael McGregor

T

his year and the last one saw continued growth among many large, strategic players like Monro Inc., GB Auto Service Inc. (now Sun Auto Tire & Service Inc.), Mavis Tire Express Services Corp. and others. With all of this activity, one wonders if these and other big operators will ever run out of acquisition or greenfield opportunities. The reality is that we have a long way to go before any of these players show us how big is “too big.” There is plenty of market share they can capture to keep their cash flow machines going. My first reason for saying this is that the fundamentals of the economy are good. We have a rising gross domestic product, a growing vehicle population, higher miles driven per car and a growing population of vehicle owners. A rising tide will continue to lift all boats in the near-term. When I look at some of the players that are poised for growth — Bridgestone Retail Operations, Mavis, Monro, Discount Tire, Sun Auto and Les Schwab Tire Centers — collectively, these players comprise about 5,800 locations nationwide. The remaining outlets are a mix of national and regional players and many are single or two-location dealerships. Also look at the decline of mass merchandisers, specialty repair shops and car dealerships nationally. Strategic players have picked up market share from those channels. They also seek out competitors that might be less committed to running their own outlets in certain areas. For example, we’ve seen large commercial tire dealerships like McCarthy Tire Service Co. Inc., Southern Tire Mart LLC and Parkhouse Tire Inc. acquire GCR Tires & Service locations in certain territories. The former GB Auto Service Inc. has been particularly creative in growing its w w w . M o d e r n T i r e D e a l e r. c o m

06_MTD_Columns.indd 59

store count. In Phoenix, Ariz., by acquiring Sun Devil Auto and Wilhelm Automotive, GB Auto picked up excellent operators with good geographic coverage and can expect sales increases by the continued integration of tire sales into those locations. There are also tens of thousands of general repair garages nationwide. Converting just a fraction of these garages that work as tire store formats could propel future growth. I also expect strategic players to start looking for growth in rural areas, where per capita income is strong and competitive pressure is less severe. In sum, we are a long way from seeing how big is too big.

The tire and service business still depends on the people running the stores. Having said all of that, any rapidly expanding business — whether it’s 100 stores or 1,500 stores — can periodically become too big to manage or, put another way, too big to manage the way it had been managed previously or perhaps too big to manage from corporate headquarters. Some of the symptoms of “too big to manage” include same store sales declines, higher than normal employee turnover, having a losing store count that’s greater than 20% of total store count and things like that. How does one fix “too big to manage?” I once saw a nationwide, 1,500-store group that was “too big to manage” fixed in the following way. First, it was decided that the chain could no longer be managed centrally. The 1,500 stores were split into seven zones of around 215 stores each. The zones were

comprised of eight to 10 districts of 20 to 30 stores each, depending on geography. Experienced operators who came from the stores were made zone managers and were given responsibility for all decisionmaking and strategy for their zones. They assembled a zone office team comprised of a controller, a marketing manager, an HR manager and a financial analyst. Since the best ideas always come from the stores, everyone was in the stores and in the districts all of the time. Zone managers met monthly at corporate headquarters to share best practices and turnaround results. Marketing managers, controllers and HR managers also met monthly to share their plans. After 10 months, it was clear who was effective and who was not. The seven zones were reorganized into five larger regions, the five most effective zone managers were promoted to regional managers and the improvements continued. Second, the company focused everyone around three simple goals and aligned compensation with these goals. The goals were profit improvement, tire unit sales and customer satisfaction. They were communicated clearly and consistently and remained unchanged for many years. Lastly, the company invested in educating, retaining and improving its best store managers and associates by enhancing training programs, sharing profits, building morale and providing a stable and consistent field management structure. The tire and service business still depends on the people running the stores. This is true, regardless of your size. Delegating responsibility while pushing decision-making and management down as far as you can just makes running them so much easier. ■ Michael McGregor is a partner at Focus Investment Banking LLC (focusbankers.com/automotive/tire-andservice). DSP Insight

Are you running the business or is it running you? TAKE CONTROL BEFORE YOU LOSE CONTROL By

Jeff Morgan

Once you have delegated authority to others and have set aside the time you need each week to “work on” your business, you need to decide what to focus on.

E

ver wish you had more time? We all have before — whether we’ve been up against a tight deadline or were thinking about spending extra time with someone. And often, we wish we had more time to spend after it’s too late. When faced with this, the conclusion that many people come to is that they just need to do a better job at time management. Well, I’m about to break that bubble. The truth is that you cannot manage time! It will continue to march forward at the same, steady pace that it always has — and always will. You have absolutely no power or control over it. The only thing that you have power or control over when it comes to time is what you do with it. So while you cannot

60

06_MTD_Columns.indd 60

manage time, you can — and must — manage yourself. This is especially true when running a business. You probably have heard some version of “You need to work more on your business, as opposed to just in your business.” That sounds good. But as you already know, that’s hard to do. Sometimes we have great plans and ideas to move our business forward. However, before we know it, we are caught up in our “everyday” and in the minutiae of the business — only to realize that our ideas never came to life. And even if you tried, it simply “got lost.” When this happens, you must realize that you are no longer running your business. Instead, the business is running you. This is a prescription for disaster.

Sometimes when this happens, your business may still be performing well financially. This gives you even more of an excuse as to why it is OK to allow those great ideas to vanish. “We’re knocking it out of the park right now and can barely keep up. We’re in a great place!” we tell ourselves. Well, to quote Will Rogers, “Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” This may be the most prophetic statement ever made when it comes to business. The reality is that it’s very easy to let stagnation happen. You have a lot going on in your business. There are moments when it may seem that you are juggling more balls than you can handle. You have questions coming at you from employees MTD July 2021

7/6/21 8:41 AM

and customers. You have issues to deal with regarding inventory, equipment, vehicles and people. At times, it can seem that you are simply trying to keep your head above water. But here is the bigger issue. Until you learn to better handle this, it will never change. You will be stuck in this perpetual loop — the never-ending whirlpool of stuff. This is why I mentioned earlier that you must learn to better manage yourself. It starts with personal accountability. Just as you would hold an employee accountable for doing their job, you must do the same for yourself. As an owner or manager, part of your job is to lead the business to success, both for today and into the future. Today is what it is. But the future is completely dependent on your willingness and ability to plan, forecast, adjust and change. With this in mind, the first thing you need to do is hold yourself accountable for setting time aside every week to look at — and plan for — the future. It does not have to be several days at a time. Perhaps you set aside one morning each week to spend a few hours “working on” your business. This means that you are not to be pulled away from this task. Your team must know that this is a time when you are unavailable. Only a serious emergency can peel you away. Because daily business does not stop, you need to have delegated certain authority and tasks to others in your business in order to accomplish this. This seems to be the biggest obstacle for many business owners. Too often, leaders feel that only they can do it properly or that they are the only ones who can handle certain situations. This becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. You must develop others so they can take on tasks that you primarily handle. This will take time and there will be mistakes along the way, but it will be worth it. I have often said that the best leaders are the ones who don’t have to be there because they have developed others to carry forward in their absence. Once you have delegated authority to others and have set aside the time you need each week to “work on” your business, you need to decide what to focus on. Allow yourself to be critical of w w w . M o d e r n T i r e D e a l e r. c o m

06_MTD_Columns.indd 61

your business. Look at what is working well and where you have opportunities to improve. Be honest with yourself. Realize that “good” can be a limiter to becoming “great.” Maybe your business is doing OK in a specific area, but you know there is an opportunity to be better. Do not be afraid to admit this. In fact, recognize that your future success is dependent on these types of improvements. Now that you have identified and listed out your opportunities, you need to prioritize that list. I like to use this analogy: “You can only eat an elephant one bite at a time. Just make sure the first bite tastes so good that you want to go back for more.” In other words, go after the things that will have the biggest and best effect on your business first. Go through your list and rank items or ideas based on their value to the business. Put your most critical items first. Then list those things that are still important, but not as critical at the moment. Finally, add the items that you feel you need to do, but not before you have implemented the other items.

You must develop others so they can take on tasks that you primarily handle. You cannot do everything at once, so start with just a few items at the top of the list. Focus on two or three that you can drive effectively. If you try any more than that, you will likely not get any done as you will become overwhelmed. You may not think that will happen, but remember — you still have the rest of your business to run. As you look to develop plans, make sure they are doable. I once worked with an executive who told me that he based his plans according to three key criteria, which I still remember and use to this day. Whatever you do, he said, make sure your plan is “realistic, sustainable and executable.” If it is not realistic, you are wasting your time. If it is not something that can be sustained, it will not create long-term value. If you do not have the ability to execute the plan, it is simply a dream. Once

your plan fits all three of those criteria, you are ready to put it in place. Make sure your plans are clear and detailed in what you want to accomplish and exactly how you are going to do it. When any of these are unclear, you run the risk of the people in your business interpreting your plans differently and acting upon them differently. Do not leave any doubt as to what everyone’s role is. Meet with your team and outline everything to everyone. This ensures that not only do individuals know what they should be doing, but they know what others are doing, as well. This creates layers of accountability that can help lead to success. Once your plan is launched, you must report back to everyone regularly on how they are performing. It will likely be a struggle at the beginning, because any change often is. Even if things start off well, if left alone, people will often fall back into old habits or ways of doing things. You need them to develop new habits. And this takes time — often at least three months of constant focus. That is why you must continue to evaluate and report on progress regularly. You must keep this top of mind with your team, as well, if you want them to do so. Once you have taken the time to build and execute solid plans to improve your business, you will see results. Additionally, you will also feel that you have more control over where your business is going and you will feel more confident in your ability to steer it to where you want it to go. This all starts and ends with you holding yourself accountable. If you let yourself get washed away in the everyday tides of business, you will eventually drown. Do not let this happen. Only by forcing yourself to step away regularly from the “day-to-day” — to focus and develop plans to improve your business — will you achieve the levels of success that you want. This is a non-negotiable that you must do for yourself and your business. ■ Tire industry veteran Jeff Morgan is the executive director of TEN (Training and Education Network), including the DSP (Dealer Strategic Planning) 20 Group. Business Insight

Growth opportunities

FOUR TIPS FOR MULTI-STORE OPERATORS By

Dennis McCarron

T

here are many types of independent tire dealerships throughout North America. There’s “Big Busy,” which is a giant store with a giant daily car count. “Big Slow” is in the same enormous building as “Big Busy,” but has a smaller car count. Then there’s “Small Busy,” which is just a roller coaster ride of a ton of cars, with half being worked on outdoors because there’s just no room inside. And of course, you have “Small Slow,” which is a threebay operation with single-digit car count. All of these types can be pretty interesting when they are owned by the same person — a multi-store operator (MSO.) It’s easy for an MSO to wonder why one outlet always seems busy, while another seems dead. (And you can’t assume that “Big Busy” is the store that makes the most profit. That’s not always the case.) Let’s look at things a MSO can do to improve his or her business: Build your teams strategically. First and foremost, if you own more than two stores, I hope you have figured out that you cannot be in three places at once. When you owned two stores, maybe you were able to manage this feat. But three stores? It’s not happening. MSOs must learn to step back and remember that they are not in the tire business anymore. They are in the people business. The people they manage are in the tire business. Let’s say you’ve mastered the art of delegation by either hiring strong people around you or hiring a middle manager. Congratulations! That’s a very big step. If you have five stores or more, you will need to do both. Let me know if this sounds familiar. Your first store made a lot of money and you were happy. You thought you could double your money by buying a

62

06_MTD_Columns.indd 62

second store. But all you did was double your headaches and split your profits in half. You doubled your employee problems, property problems and customer problems. That’s because you tried to divide and conquer. You took your awesome team in one store and robbed them of half the talent to fill your second store. Instead of building your second store’s talent from scratch, you broke the mojo of the first store and created two new teams that now need to figure out how to work together. You don’t have to do that again. It’s OK to build a solid salesperson up to an assistant manager, promoting that person out when the time is right. Just don’t do it all at once. If you build a new store, build a new team. It will take a year or so to find the right crew, but don’t destroy what you have developed in the first team. Homogenize your point-of-sale systems — pronto. Don’t wait to let the dust settle. If you acquired a store that uses a different point-ofsale system, get a matching set as quickly as possible. Yes, this will cause some tension in the store that has to give up the point-of-sale system they love — and sometimes love to hate — but it’s a great opportunity to build some credit in the bank by off-setting it with something they like, such as LED lights in the store or a new break room table — whatever was on the team’s wish list when you bought the store. (You did have a meeting to ask for their input, right?) Hire a dedicated HR person or a third-party that can handle HR for you. With two stores and roughly 15 to 20 employees, you can handle hiring, onboarding, termination, other disciplinary actions and some employee disputes. With three stores, this becomes someone else’s full-time job. There are too many rules, laws and pitfalls for you, as an owner, to try to figure out

MSOs must learn to step back and remember that they are not in the tire business anymore. what’s right, what’s wrong and what’s legal. If you do hire an HR professional, make sure they have several years in that field and are certified. You don’t always need to pay out for a top-of-the-line person. You need someone who is functional and willing to stay current. Sharpen your marketing. Aunt Julie’s kid’s friend who is getting a marketing degree might be fine for a single-store location that needs someone to keep Facebook and Instagram popping daily. A multi-location business needs to step it up a little and have coordinated marketing programs and campaigns. And finally, here’s some extra advice for you, the owner. Once you grow to three stores, you’re going to feel like employees fall into three categories: superstars, strong bench and seat warmers. Don’t be that owner who spends too much time on the bench warmers. Focus on getting the strong bench to become your next-generation superstars. Don’t ignore the superstars. Ask for their help in growing your bench. And don’t worry about the seat warmers. They will likely be just that and will hop from team to team. And that’s OK. ■ Dennis McCarron is a partner at Cardinal Brokers, one of the leading brokers in the tire and automotive industry (www.cardinalbrokers.com). Mazda 3 & Mazda 2 – 2007-2021

T

he tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) monitors air pressure for each tire. If tire pressure is too low or too high in one or more tires, the TPMS will turn on a warning light on the vehicle’s instrument panel and sound a warning beep for about three seconds. If there is a system malfunction or a spare tire is in use, the warning light will flash. Tire pressure sensors installed on each wheel send tire pressure data by radio signal to the receiver unit in the vehicle. This system may not function properly under the following conditions: • When there is equipment or a device near the vehicle using the same radio frequency as that of the tire pressure sensors; • When a large metallic object (i.e., a large electric household appliance or a desktop computer) is placed on the w w w . right side of the rear seat, which may block radio signals from the tire pressure sensor to the receiver unit; When using a digital device, such as a personal computer, or a current converter device that may cause radio interference with the receiver unit; When excess snow or ice adheres to the vehicle, especially around the wheels; When tire pressure sensor batteries are exhausted; When using a wheel with no tire pressure sensor installed, such as a spare tire; When using tires with steel wire reinforcement in the sidewalls, and; When using tire chains.

TIRE PRESSURE MONTOR WARNING LIGHT

CAUTION: Do not tilt or use excessive side force when checking air pressure or inflating the tire or the tire pressure sensor may be damaged.

When the tire pressure warning light illuminates and the warning beep sound is heard for about three seconds, check tire pressure and adjust as necessary. When pressure is adjusted on hot tires to the cold inflation pressure, the warning light/ beep may turn on after the tires cool and pressure drops below specification. Also an illuminated warning light resulting from the tire air pressure dropping due to cold ambient temperature may go on if the ambient temperature rises. In this case, it will also be necessary to adjust tire air pressure. If the warning light illuminates again even after tire pressures are adjusted, the tire may be punctured. NOTE: After adjusting tire air pressures, it may require some time for the warning light to go out. If the warning light remains illuminated, drive the vehicle at a speed of at least 16 miles per hour (25 km/h) for 10

NOTE: Whenever tires or wheels are changed, including changing to and from winter tires, where a new sensor is installed, the tire pressure sensor’s unique ID signal code must be registered with the TPMS system. Tire pressure sensor ID registration is achieved automatically once a vehicle has been stationary for 15 minutes or more and then is driven at a speed of at least 16 mph (25 km/h) for 10 minutes or longer. • When the tire pressure warning light illuminates and the warning beep sound is heard, check tire pressure and adjust as necessary. After adjusting the tire air pressures, it may require some time for the warning light to go out. If the warning light remains illuminated, drive the vehicle at a speed of at least

16 mph (25 km/h) for 10 minutes and then verify that it goes out.

TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR REGISTRATION

NOTE: There is no practical difference between the Mazda-Modular Diagnostic System (M-MDS) scan tool method of registration and the non-scan tool method. The M-MDS scan tool method simply provides the ability to read the tire pressure sensor ID changes directly. With both methods, the vehicle must remain stationary for 15 minutes and then be driven for 10 minutes. Without the M-MDS scan tool: 1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, then turn it back to LOCK position; 2. Leave the vehicle with the engine off and wait for 15 minutes or more. NOTE: If the vehicle is driven before 15 minutes of changing tires, the TPMS warning light will flash because the sensor ID signal code will not have been registered yet. If this happens, MTD July 2021

7/6/21 8:48 AM

TPMS park the vehicle for 15 minutes or more, after which the sensor ID signal code will register upon driving the vehicle for 10 minutes or longer. 3. After 15 minutes, drive a vehicle at a speed of at least 16 mph (25 km/h) for 10 minutes or longer. Tire pressure sensor ID registration is completed when the TPMS warning light turns OFF. With the M-MDS scan tool: NOTE: Use the LDS (laptop PC). The PDS (pocket PC) does not support wheel unit ID registration and monitoring wheel unit ID. NOTE: When using the M-MDS scan tool to perform ID registration, record the initial ID data and verify the data has changed after driving for 10 minutes or more. 1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, then turn it back to LOCK position; 2. Connect the M-MDS scan tool and identify the vehicle; 3. After the vehicle is identified, select the following items from the initial screen of the M-MDS. Select “BODY”, then “TPMS FUNCTION” and then “WHEEL UNIT ID REGISTRATION;” NOTE: Before driving, record the initial ID data stored in the scan tool, to verify the data has changed. 4. Select “WU_ID REGISTRATION;” 5. Leave the vehicle with the engine off and wait for 15 minutes or more; 6. Verify the TPMS warning light turns ON and OFF in 0.5-second repeat cycles, and; 7. After 15 minutes or more, drive the vehicle at a speed of at least 16 mph (25 km/h) for 10 minutes or longer. The tire pressure sensor ID registration is complete when the TPMS warning light turns OFF.

changed, such as changing to and from winter tires, where a new sensor is installed, the tire pressure sensor’s unique ID signal code must be registered with the TPMS system. See RESET PROCEDURES. NOTE: The TPMS system is not affected by wheel and tire rotation. NOTE: Perform tire pressure adjustment when the tires are cold. Tire pressure will vary according to the tire temperature — approximately 1.5 psi (10 kPa) change for every 10 degrees. Let the vehicle stand for one hour or only drive it one mile (1.6 km) or less before adjusting the tire pressures.

TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR

CAUTION: The use of non-genuine tire sealants is strictly prohibited for vehicles equipped with TPMS. Other tire sealants can clog tire pressure sensors. CAUTION: When reinstalling a previously removed tire pressure sensor to a wheel, replace the grommet for the tire pressure sensor. NOTE: Factory wheels are specially designed for installation of tire pressure sensors. Do not use non-genuine wheel or it may not be possible to install tire pressure sensors. Removal 1. When replacing a wheel or tire, tire pressure sensors must be set up in one of the following ways: • Remove the sensor from the old wheel and install it to the new wheel; • Keep the same wheel with the tire pressure sensor and replace only the tire; • Use a new wheel and sensor. (The new sensor will need to be registered.) 2. Remove the wheel. Remove valve cap. (See Figure 1.) Remove the valve core and bleed air from the tire; MTD July 2021

Kumho Tire USA Inc. offers the Ecsta V730, a performance tire inspired by the company’s original equipment fitment on the Dodge Viper ACR. The Ecsta V730 is designed to handle the surface in both wet and dry conditions by utilizing an ultra-high grip tread compound with fine carbon black and synthetic resins that optimize handling, responsiveness and grip. The tire’s wide circumferential grooves improve hydroplaning resistance, while its outer block offers cornering precision and better dry road steering response. The tire is available in six sizes: 205/50R15, 225/50R16, 225/45R17, 245/45R17, 255/40R17 and 225/40R18. KUMHO TIRE USA www.kumhotireusa.com

The Alligator V2B nonreturn valve cap reduces the time it takes to check tire pressure levels on commercial vehicles. The V2B non-return cap does not have to be removed for checking air pressure levels or airing up tires, which makes it easier and faster to regularly check tire pressure levels. It fits all standard valves, can be screwed into place by hand and the end face is dirt- and water-repellent. The double seal valve cap has two built-in heat resistant grommets, which prevent air pressure loss even when the valve core is damaged or dirty. WEGMANN AUTOMOTIVE USA INC. www.alligator-valves.com
