Incorporating social media into your tool business

Some distributors have had major success using social media to expand their business.

TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook are a few of the most popular social media platforms people are using today. According to Statista, in 2023, people spent an average of 151 minutes a day on social media, and unsurprisingly small business owners are taking advantage of that.

As mobile tool distributors, you spend much of your time communicating face-to-face with your customers. However, there are some distributors who’ve branched into the world of social media. For some, social media is just a way to communicate. I’ve spoken with many distributors who’ve noted that if they’re running late or can’t make it to a stop for that they’ll post to Facebook to give their customers a heads-up about what’s going on.

For distributors like Cameron Meyer, Ron Davitt, and Nick Morello though, the three use social media not only as a means to communicate with their customers but to reach a larger customer base and sell more tools.

Meyer, a Mac Tools distributor, likes to use Snapchat to post tools he takes in on trade and notes that they’re usually gone before he hits his next stop. In

Cornwell distributor Davitt’s case, he estimates that a third of all his sales come from social media campaigns.

“I have a thing called Cornwell Corner on Saturday morning,” Davitt says. “Throughout the week if I see a guy’s using a tool in a way that I hadn’t seen before or was pretty cool, I’ll video, I’ll photograph it, I’ll put it up on my closed group, and next thing I know, I have three guys saying, ‘Well, I want that tool.’ So, I just sold three tools without even going to their shop.”

Morello, an independent distributor, notes that he jumped on the social media bandwagon early on.

“I started a Facebook group about 10-12 years ago,” Morello says. “I have 208,000 people on my Facebook page.”

And with his social media presence, Morello notes that his business has significantly improved.

Though you may not reach the same level of success as these three distributors, wouldn’t it be nice to let social media do some of the work for you? Whether you just post about that sale you’re having on your truck or the newest tools you have in stock, it could be a simple way to make an extra sale.

SAFETY FROM head to toe

Safety gear comes in many shapes and sizes, but all have a place in a technician’s shop.

No matter what kind of repairs a shop performs, all technicians should be taking the proper precautions before jumping in to any job. From a technician’s head to their toes–literally–safety gear has a place in every facet of an automotive shop.

“As a technician,” says Courtney Bedoya, marketing manager at Steel Blue. “You never know what’s going to come across your path everyday. [Since] you don’t know, it’s hard to plan.”

To anticipate your customers’ needs and plan for them, you’ll need to have a good understanding of your customer base and what their shop deals with regularly. As well as this, you’ll need to know specific features and capabilities of protective gear, along with their limitations, to make the proper safety recommendations.

KEEP YOUR TECHS SAFE

Nick Morello, an independent distributor based out of Totowa, New Jersey, knows first-hand the

importance of safety gear. Morello has been in the game for almost 40 years, selling tools and equipment for technicians in his area and even nationwide thanks to the online portion of his business. When he was 18, his family sold their trucking company. At the time, Morello had dropped out of high school and was looking for a job, so he talked to one of his family’s distributors, and they helped him become a dealer. He spent 18 years with a flag before moving into the world of independent tool distribution.

Throughout his time in the industry, Morello has seen and heard many stories about accidents happening in the workplace. Three of

the technicians he visits on his route are blind from work-related accidents, and in each case, some form of protective gear could’ve been the difference between keeping or losing their sight. In fact, Morello understands the importance of protecting yourself so well that he’s been known to give away safety gear to people who can’t afford it.

“I swear to God, I’d give it to him for free,” says Morello, recounting the story of a customer who wasn’t able to purchase a pair of safety glasses.

“To me, that’s bad karma that this guy doesn’t [buy them] and then something bad happens. A pair of safety glasses means nothing to me because… I [can] sleep at night knowing a technician now has a pair of safety glasses.”

Still, as Felipe Macias, MLA/ PPE sales manager at Encon Safety Products attests, it’s important to explain the cost-benefit analysis of

Professional Distributor I June 2024 I VehicleServicePros.com 19 COVER STORY

purchasing safety equipment to your customers.

Macias suggests technicians ask, “If I buy this inexpensive, cheap eyewear, how long [am I] going to wear it before buying more?”

Technicians, like most people, want something that won’t break the bank, but if their gear doesn’t fit or wears down after only a few uses, then it won’t matter that they saved a few dollars. Explain to your customers why a safety product will benefit them in the long term and save them

money since they won’t need to repurchase the same thing after the cheaper product has broken.

“Whenever you get cheap or buy the bare minimum, you increase your risk,” explains Jon Bullock, manager of strategic marketing at Encon Safety Products. “You also increase the risk of an accident happening.”

SELLING SAFETY FROM HEAD TO TOE

When asked how to sell these products to technicians, Morello explained that keeping your truck well stocked is key. When a technician can see the product, hold it in their hands, or try it on, then they’re more likely to buy it. If you’re not sure where to start with your customers, you can ask them questions to get a better understanding of what they might need in terms of safety gear.

Austin Dorman, senior manager of product marketing at Milwaukee Tool suggests asking a somewhat difficult question to get to the root of what safety gear to offer your customers — what are some common injuries that you regularly experience? The answer to this question opens the floor for you to make recommendations to the technicians. If they suffer a lot of hand-related injuries, show them the gloves you have on your truck with higher cut levels. Or maybe they’ve had a couple technicians call out complaining of back pain, a new work boot with better insole protection might be your suggestion.

HEAD AND EYE PROTECTION

Eye protection is one of the most important parts of keeping a technician safe from things like chemicals, debris,

fine powders, and other harmful things that can float around in a workspace. Head gear, along with eyewear, should be worn as much as possible especially for the technician that performs undercar work. Not only can a head or

eye injury keep your customers from work for days, weeks, or even months, but it can alter the course of their life.

“Depending on the environment [the technician] is working in, head protection could be something that’s

either required or they would just benefit from,” explains Dorman. “Whether it be a hard hat or even a bump cap which is just a hat with a hard shell [inside].”

There have been many advancements in safety and protective equipment/gear over the years. Dorman notes that perhaps the biggest advancements have been made in head protection.

“The main focus there is just adding more foam along the sides of the head to really reduce the felt impacts to the head with slips, trips, and falls,” says Dorman.

In recent years, there’s been more pressure to create fog-resistant lenses on safety glasses. Accredits this push to create products that can work through fog as a byproduct of the pandemic. Pre-pandemic it was an issue

felt by some, but as mask mandates were put into place due to the rise of COVID-19 cases across the country, and technicians continued to work, it became more of a problem that needed to be dealt with immediately. If you can’t clearly see what you’re doing, then the chance of an accident is high.

When demonstrating eyewear, Macias suggests working with what’s around you. If you want to show the anti-fog feature of a new pair of glasses, try holding the lens up against a

hot cup of coffee.

HAND PROTECTION

Technicians spend their entire career working with their hands, so keeping them protected should be an everyday priority. Gloves have come a long way in the automotive industry, evolving to better protect their wearer without disrupting the ability to perform intricate tasks. Though it might seem like a simple part of safety, gloves can fit a variety of needs and situations.

From nitrile or latex gloves to protect against chemicals and abrasives, to cut-resistant gloves or welding gloves, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to keeping your customers’ hands safe.

“The hand is actually the number one injured part of the body across the country,” says Dorman. “Just breaking down the actual injury statistics.”

For cut resistant gloves, you’ll need to know what the different levels mean. According to Lift Safety, there are nine levels of cut resistance, and they are as follows:

• Level 1 withstands 200g to 499g of cutting load

• Level 2 withstands 500g to 999g of cutting load

• Level 3 withstands 1,000g to 1,499g of cutting load

• Level 4 withstands 1,500g to 2,199g of cutting load

• Level 5 withstands 2,200g to 2,999g of cutting load

• Level 6 withstands 3,000g to 3,999g of cutting load

• Level 7 withstands 4,000g to 4,999g of cutting load

• Level 8 withstands 5,000g to 5,999g of cutting load

• Level 9 withstands 6,000g or more of cutting load

WORK BOOTS

When customers come onto his truck, Morello looks at their shoes and depending on what he sees, he moves into selling mode. If a technician’s shoes are worn out and look like they might be on their last leg, Morello can direct them to the boots he keeps stocked on his truck and lets them try them on and get a feel for the product. Footwear, as Morello puts it, is the low hanging fruit of safety gear. It’s easy to tell if someone needs a good pair of boots without asking those leading questions.

“A guy walks on your truck, you don’t know if he needs a set of screwdrivers or a set of ratchets,” Morello

22 Professional Distributor I June 2024 I VehicleServicePros.com

explains. “But if you look down you know if he needs a pair of shoes.”

Boots are essential for a technician. Many technicians stand for

hours every day, so they need something that’s going to hold up under that kind of strenuous, constant wear.

“I think over 80 percent of back

pain comes from improper footwear,” Steel Blue’s Bedoya says. “Finding footwear that fits properly and is comfortable will help [technicians] not only be more productive throughout the day but will allow them to live life outside of work as well.”

Bedoya advises on keeping your truck stocked with a handful of boots in a range of sizes and familiarizing yourself with the unique features of each style. If you’re able to, show customers the inside of the boot and let them push down on the insole. If the boot offers a comfortable interior, they should be able to feel it for themselves.

Whether it’s the everyday work boot or something more task-specific like a welding helmet, as a distributor it’s your job to help figure out what your customers need to keep themselves safe on the job.

Electrical circuit testing techniques for service technicians

Understanding your tools and equipment for electrical circuit testing is crucial to performing competent diagnostics.

In my humble opinion, technicians must have a firm understanding of automotive electrical circuits so when problems surface, testing techniques can be leveraged to realize success.

In this article, we’ll take a deep dive into the core techniques of electrical circuit testing. From reading wiring diagrams, accessing component locators, sourcing connector charts, and selecting the right tools, we’ll cover them all. After reading this article, you should have a sharper focus on the art of electrical circuit testing which I know will add to your technical proficiency and the ability to easily earn more money.

Regardless of your experience level, we can all learn something new every day.

FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS: ELECTRICAL BASICS

Technicians must possess a solid understanding of voltage, current, resistance/load, and how their interactions can lead to proper system operation or how a failure in any of those can cause havoc within automotive circuits.

Voltage is the electrical force, and without the right amount, an electrical circuit cannot function properly. This is one of the main reasons battery testing should be carried out proactively like during a service visit. In my shop, we test the low-voltage battery during every vehicle service visit. Replacing batteries before they cause havoc saves in multiple ways.

Current is the flow of electrons from the power supply. Circuits are designed to support a specific range of current at the operating voltage. Although current measurements are not super common, they can be very revealing especially when viewed through the eyes of an oscilloscope.

Resistance is the opposition to current flow and comes in a few flavors. Every connection, length of wire, switch, relay, etc. provides a small, tolerable amount of resistance. Each point of resistance limits current by consuming some of the electrical supply voltage. For a circuit to do its job, the primary consumption of the supply voltage needs to be consumed by the load. Whether the load is a taillight, window motor, or a fuel injector, minimal voltage drops

should exist within the circuit, so the full electrical force is available to perform the task at hand.

TOOLS FOR SUCCESS

One must be very acquainted with their test equipment. First, a digital volt ohm meter (DVOM) is a pretty standard piece of equipment a technician needs to have easy access to if they are going to be successful. However, one also needs to be keenly aware of the device’s limitations and its behaviors.

One behavior that comes to mind is auto-ranging. If one is not paying close attention, this feature can fool you. And because of this, I find myself typically turning it off and manually controlling the display resolution. This is done by knowing the expected range to focus on the circuit or device under test. For example, if a meter is constantly changing its display scaling, observing the numbers can be annoying. This is also true with some oscilloscopes that have auto-ranging on by default.

Second, a test light is very useful at times, and I find myself using it often. In fact, just this week I was working with one of our apprentices who was faced with a parasitic load that was measured out at just under 500mA. As we discussed strategies for locating the source, I suggested that

we start at the easiest point of access and that was at the under-hood power distribution center. As I was guiding her through the strategy of my approach, I explained that there were a few ways we could begin testing.

One strategy was to begin removing fuses until the draw disappeared. However since there were many fuses in that power distribution center, we could narrow down the list of fuses to pull by utilizing a test light.

After verifying that the test light was working, we began identifying the fuses that were connected to battery power by marching up and down the fuse block noting which fuses were connected to battery power (Figure 1).

Then all we needed to do was start removing each of the identified fuses one at a time while watching our DVOM. At about the third fuse we pulled we noticed that our load dropped to around 7mA (Figure 2).

Looking at the label under the fuse block cover we found that the fuse we needed to identify service information on was fuse 173 (25A). Digging into service information revealed that the only device protected by that fuse was the ABS module (Figure 3).

Next, we looked at the wiring diagram (Figure 4) and found that there were two continuous power supplies

Professional Distributor I June 2024 I VehicleServicePros.com 25
Figure 1 — Parasitic load testing - Identifying a hot fuse Photo courtesy of Scott Brown Figure 2 — Parasitic load testing - Identifying loads Photo courtesy of Scott Brown

protected by two different fuses. One of which is the fuse supplying the parasitic load. We also wanted to check the ignition feed to the ABS module to make sure that we didn’t have a short to power on that circuit with the key off. We confirmed this by measuring the signal at pin-8 of the ABS module for the absence of power with the key off.

This vehicle indeed needed a new ABS module. When interviewing clients, they revealed to us that they have had the battery replaced in the vehicle about every 18 months. Today it’s not uncommon to see a 12V battery requiring replacement

every three to five years. If only the parasitic load had been discovered previously, the client likely wouldn’t have had so many battery failures.

There are other ways to identify which fuses are likely supporting an unwanted parasitic load. One test involves measuring the voltage drop across the fuse. As mentioned earlier, all connections will have resistance, and therefore a voltage drop can be observed. If you find a fuse that has a voltage drop, then you can investigate items protected by that fuse. You might want to consider this style of test to avoid the possibility of waking up a module after removing and reinstalling a fuse. If such an event occurred, it would result in lost time as you would be waiting for that module or device to properly power down.

Now looking back at Figures 1-4, one should also have an awareness of the amount of “load” your test light places on a circuit. Measuring the current your test light/s draws is very good for reference. This can be useful information especially when trying to load test low current circuits, either the power or ground supply where you suspect unwanted resistance. In some cases, you may need to make up your own set of test lights for these tasks. Personally, I have several lights ranging from 11mA up to 8A.

One quick test you can deploy for this is when you are checking for power and ground on say a mass air flow sensor. If you are using a DVOM and back-probing the sensor with it disconnected, you are not loading the circuit. With high

resistance upstream on the power side, you might see 12.2V KOEO (key on, engine off) across the power and ground but if you were able to take a test light that drew at least 500mA and connected the ground side of the test light to the battery negative and touched the probe side to the positive lead on the meter, the light would not light and you would see your meter drop as well. This is how you can leverage test lights to help you load a circuit and why it is important to know how much current your light draws. For example, I have a test light with an LED. This light only draws 11mA, and it is possible that this amount of load would be unable to allow this theoretical voltage drop to reveal itself as shown in Figure 5

Third, I consider a current probe to be a valuable tool and one I recommend and use often. Pairing it with a voltmeter will provide one with some valuable information about the total power consumption in the system under test. Power is expressed in wattage which is what we’re usually accustomed to in our homes when replacing light bulbs. This too is something we should be familiar with since there are systems on cars that monitor current flow and if the normal amount of current is deviated from, other problems can surface. For example, some vehicles monitor the external lighting system

and if a low-current LED bulb is installed in place of an incandescent, warning lights or messages are likely to show up. These systems usually deploy a precision resistor within a module connected to the power supply side of the bulb circuit. This resistor will provide a known voltage drop when the circuit is consuming the design current. If you install a bulb that takes it outside of the calibrated current consumption range, think LED, this will result in that module communicating this error through a warning light or message for the driver.

CURRENT MEASUREMENTS

I would like to start with the fact that inductive current probes have limitations and reemphasize that one needs to know their tools and behaviors. A handheld inductive current probe can be a valuable tool when used correctly. If you are trying to

measure/validate a parasitic load with a current probe you are likely going to be misled. The reason I say this is from experience. When I am performing parasitic load testing on a vehicle, I am always going to base my conclusions on a direct series measurement through my DVOM. When you perform a parasitic load test the best practice is to properly configure the vehicle for monitoring. Connecting a high current switch between the battery ground post and cable (Figure 6) will allow you to carefully monitor parasitic load activity after a proper vehicle shutdown.

Additionally, as mentioned earlier, inductive current probes can give inaccurate results at very low currents. Most probes will require that you hold the probe very near the point of measurement when turning the device on so that you can obtain a zero-baseline reading. Then carefully maneuver the probe over the circuit to monitor. Your results may vary and change over time which will require you to remove the probe and rezero repeatedly. (Please refer to the manual that came with your current probe.) This is because of the varying magnetic fields near the probe.

CURRENT PROBES AND OSCILLOSCOPES

I first saw the power of a current probe coupled with an oscilloscope back around 1990 on the “For Techs Only” forum on CompuServe. The person showing this technique was looking at an ignition module controlling waste-spark coils. Two out of the three coils had a ramp up to the current-limiting point. The other was missing the ramp and looked more like a square wave. Initially, I didn’t believe what I was seeing until I learned more about this technique. Since then, I have been using current probes regularly as a tool to analyze everything from coils, fuel injectors, blower motors, and more.

I’ve shared an example (Figure 7 ) of a current pattern from a fuel injector (green trace). If you look closely, you’ll see my cursors being used to measure not only the time it took for the injector

to fully open by noting the injector pintle hump but also the amount of current flow to make this happen.

DRIVEABILITY AND PERFORMANCE

fuel injector issues. Many of these issues were inherent with the Rochester Multec injector. While most of these vehicles are no longer in service due to age and environment, we still see them from time to time. Recently we had one in that had various driveability complaints such as extended crank times and a rough idle. Occasionally the vehicle would exhibit a slight hesitation upon throttle tip-in. During my analysis, I wanted to take a close look at the fuel injectors. Since this is a bank-fired system, we know that the injectors are wired in parallel groups. Each of the two groups is protected by their own fuses. This is good for us since this allows us to simply install a fuse loop so that we

can attach a current probe and make an observation.

Figure 9 demonstrates the before and after injector performance once new injectors were installed.

As you can see, the new injectors’ orange trace has a very distinct injector pintle opening signal versus the old Multec injectors occurring later in time. The vehicle’s driveability symptoms have diminished and every time we see the client he raves about how well his vehicle is performing.

our standard routines for such a symptom which led us to believe that the fuel pump was highly suspect. Looking for a way to test it electrically, we found that there is a power distribution center located in the trunk possessing the fuel pump relay.

This location provides a great access point for testing both the fuel pump relay control signal and power flow through the fuel pump. One test device I have relied on over the years is the uActivate from AESwave. Recently, they updated the

uActivate with a few new features. One of the features is a new momentary push-button on the side of the unit that helps you understand which terminal (87 or 87A) carries the load. When I installed the device in place of the relay the first test I performed was to have an assistant power cycle the key while observing the LED indicator placed across pins 85 and 86 (Figure 10).

Since I was able to confirm proper ECM control of the fuel pump relay I moved on to my next test. Referencing

the wiring diagram (Figure 10) we can see that pin-30 is our power supply and pin-87 feeds the fuel pump. Pushing in on the momentary switch located on the side of the uActivate resulted in the LED under ID 87 to dimly light. This immediately told me that there was a high probability of high resistance in this circuit. To confirm the upstream power supply, I connected a high current test light to the 4mm test plug on pin-30 at the top of the uActivate to ground where it lit. Next, I had an assistant help by tapping on the bottom of the fuel tank while I held the test button down and observed the LED under 87 where it momentarily flashed bright (Figure 11).

I then remembered that I made a request to Jorge Menchu, the founder of AESwave a while back after explaining my desire to be able to perform this test without an assistant. He suggested that a small speaker could be deployed which he proceeded to manufacture and send to me to test out. This worked out great because after inserting the speaker I proceeded to repeat the fuel tank tap test and could hear the speaker come to life intermittently as the bottom of the tank was coerced. I have a short video of this activity (youtube.com/shorts/F_pveMSVNjQ?feature=share) See Figure 12 where the speaker is installed.

Based upon these observations we were able to conclude that the high resistance was downstream on the pump side. Next, we confirmed our electrical connections at the fuel pump module were not the cause of the high resistance and concluded that the vehicle needed a new fuel pump module assembly.

After the replacement of the fuel pump module, I decided to reinstall the uActivate and utilize the large current loop on the bottom of the unit to sample the fuel pump current while turning the pump on via the on-off switch located in the center of the device and letting it stabilize.

The current trace here shows (Figure 13) the stall current of the brushed DC motor hitting approximately 29A and the nominal current operating at approximately 9A. Additionally, I was able to place cursors to measure the time between one revolution of the pump and determine that the fuel pump RPM is operating around 6,500.

CONCLUSION

As you can see having a strong understanding of electrical circuits, behaviors, and a keen awareness of measurement devices, such as meters, scopes, probes, etc., one can gain an advantage when it comes to performing competent diagnostics on today’s and tomorrow’s vehicles.

Simple is better

Independent

tool distributor Kevin Richardt took a bare bones tool truck and customized it to fit his vision for his business.

When Kevin Richardt, an independent tool dealer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, working in partnership with Stahlwille, was in the market for a tool truck, he knew he wanted something reliable. Not wanting to go into major debt, Richardt bought a basic, bare-bones Morgan Olson-style truck from Herr Display Vans and crafted it to fit his needs.

At the time, the truck wasn’t exactly what he’d envisioned. It didn’t have shore power A/C and other features he’d been looking for, but it was the right decision for his circumstances, and it came at a price he couldn’t pass up. Now, four years later, Richardt looks back on his choice and couldn’t be happier with his decision.

A simple truck, one that doesn’t take much effort to maintain and keep on the road, has saved him both money and countless headaches. He jokes that he drives a covered wagon because at the end of the day, his truck is merely a vessel to deliver products.

“I just didn’t subscribe to the norm of having a truck to make some kind of statement,” says Richardt. “I didn’t believe I needed that to be a successful tool dealer.”

ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES

Perhaps an obvious benefit to buying a more basic truck is the seemingly endless possibilities for customization. An empty truck void of “bells and whistles” as Richardt puts it, is a blank canvas to work on.

At the entrance to the truck, the commercial carpet Richardt installed catches the debris from technicians’ feet as they enter. LED floodlights above the liftgate in the rear of the truck allow Richardt to see clearly at night when loading or unloading products. Around the truck, subtle details like these solve common problems a distributor might encounter when working.

Instead of keeping his counter cluttered with inventory, Richardt upgraded to a wireless barcode scanner so he can walk around the truck and scan whatever item he needs. Also at the counter, Richardt uses a high-powered gaming laptop mounted on a shock-absorbing stand that he can

move out of the way to create even more workspace.

Richardt’s workspace has seen some of the most upgrades since he bought the truck in August 2020. In addition to the laptop, Richardt upgraded from a mouse to a trackball which he finds much faster, and its stationary nature ensures it won’t get lost in the shuffle of the workday.

PRIORITIZING THE EVERYDAY ITEMS

In his truck, Richardt has prioritized everyday tools instead of big-ticket items. The distributor has come to understand that if you can’t sell the basics, then you most likely won’t make it far in this industry. Instead of dedicating a large portion of his truck to bigger tool storage products, he had Herr build out a toolbox pocket on the truck so he can still offer storage carts or roll carts as needed.

“That made a big difference,” Richardt says. “Now I can have floor-to-ceiling products … and still have an opening for tool storage, carts, and roll carts.”

EVERYTHING HAS ITS PLACE

When organizing his truck, Richardt tries to keep everything together based on the product’s category. All suspension service products stay together, all diagnostic, all tire service, and so on. Within those categories, he tries to group tools by their brand. This system has worked well for his customers, and they’re easily able to find what they’re looking for. As for new products, those get a special place front and center, or they go to the large shelf over the toolbox pocket with other sale products. Rotating the placement of these products, Richardt finds, allows his full inventory to get a chance in the spotlight.

“With limited space on a tool truck, it can be difficult,” says Richardt. “It’s like putting a puzzle together. Customers like to comment on how things are organized, clean, and look good.”

Same old, same old blues

If things are feeling a bit mundane for you, try making just a few small changes in your routine — you’ll be amazed what a difference they can make.

Wash, rinse, repeat. Wash, rinse, repeat.

The days, weeks, months, and even years as a mobile jobber can sometimes feel like washing your hair … wash, rinse, repeat. For some, this repetitiveness provides a comfortable daily pace, security, and steadiness in your topsyturvy world.

But for many of you, those same attributes of daily pace, security, and steadiness can turn into mind-numbing drudgery. For those of you who are in this frame of mind, the task of putting on a happy face in your sales calls can be just about impossible. The result is often a downturn in your sales performance which only makes you feel worse. All leading to a downward spiral … ugh!

First off, you’re not alone. Just think, how many times have the Rolling Stones sung “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction?” Released in June of 1965, it must be an astounding number. Yet it always sounds fresh and fun. How do they do it?

There is no magic elixir, and except for an occasional Budweiser with friends, the cure is up to you.

SHAKE THINGS UP

So, start with the facts. You must make your calls, you must show your products, you must ask for the order, and you must restock your mobile store each day. But, you can make changes that will help you make your daily

wash, rinse, and repeat cycles more interesting and maybe a bit more fun. Speaking of change, people tend to resist change due to the perceived loss of control or the disruption of established routines. Change threatens individuals’ comfort zones and challenges their beliefs, triggering a defensive response aimed at preserving the status quo and what they stand to lose rather than the potential gains of change. Resistance to change can hinder progress and innovation, but acknowledging and addressing these psychological barriers are essential steps in facilitating successful growth. A disruption in your established routine may be just what the doctor ordered.

I was just looking at change resistance cartoons for this article and the one I liked best showed a downward sales results chart with the words, “What if we don’t change anything and just hope something magical happens!” It won’t.

CHANGE STARTS WITH YOU

Let’s start our daily enthusiasm project with something simple….you. When you look in the mirror each day do you look exactly like you looked yesterday? Black jeans, a logoed sweatshirt or T-shirt, and a baseball cap. Try something different. Even if it is something simple like a freshly laundered white logo shirt. I rode with a mobile jobber in the Chicago suburb of Schamburg who wears a dry-cleaned white shirt

every day. He wanted to carry his brand on his shirt, and he thought wearing a dressier-looking clean, crisp shirt each day showed professionalism and respect to his customers. Are you sure that scruffy beard is the professional look you want?

TAKE THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED

How about taking a look at your weekly or even just your daily route? Driving the exact same route each day and seeing the same buildings can easily make you feel like a postal delivery person. Taking a different route between stops will give a bit of a refreshing change to your scenery, and who knows, you might stumble upon a newly opened shop that would love to see you.

Additionally, take a look at totally changing your daily and weekly routes. If you’ve been calling on the same shop every Monday morning for years it’s sure to feed your “boring Monday syndrome,” which is a feeling many people experience at the beginning of the workweek. It’s characterized by a lack of motivation, energy, and/or enthusiasm.

As long as you tell your customers in advance that instead of Monday you will be seeing them on Thursday, I guarantee that it will not hurt your revenue, and the change in pace will help you be a bit more enthusiastic.

REFRESH YOUR WORKSPACE

Another simple and effective mental uplift is to rearrange your mobile store. If you’ve been getting on your truck multiple times a day for months and months and seeing the same socket sets or wrench sets staring you in the face, it’s time for a reset. Just think of your local Costco or Sam’s Club. Every time you enter the store they have rearranged many of their impulse items. Many mobiles have had success by having a “what’s new” section just

36 Professional Distributor I June 2024 I VehicleServicePros.com GO SELL SOMETHING

inside the entry door. Moving your products around will not only help your mindset, it may also expose your customers to additional products they may be interested in.

EXPAND YOUR CUSTOMER BASE

In previous columns, we have talked about sales results, which are really simply a matter of numbers and skill. Making more calls will eventually produce more sales. Improving your selling skills and making more calls will always increase your sales results dramatically. Now use those skills to get some new customers.

In every large dealership you call on there are your steady customers, your occasional customers, and those technicians you just can’t seem to crack. Set yourself a daily goal of investing ten minutes of one-on-one time with “that guy” who just won’t buy from you. You know who they are so create a list with all of their names and develop a conversion plan for each. Start out slowly with

just some friendly conversation. Next week maybe give them a hat or some other promotional item you’re giving away. Keep at it. When your company comes out with something that is “new and exclusive” show it to them. Your persistence will eventually pay off. Even if you only get one additional customer every two weeks, a total of 26 new customers this year will make a nice difference in your sales and help cover those technicians who quit the trade or move out of town.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Talking about real change to make your day more interesting, I read this LinkedIn post from a Mac Tools Double Diamond distributor from Monroe, Louisana, Robert Tolbert.

366 Days of FULL BLOWN PINK!!!

Out of pure respect for patients and families that deal with Breast Cancer, I have to share this. These people deal with this disease 365 days a year where those that aren’t affected only promote awareness for the 31 days of October. I

am proposing this for the 366 days of 2024 to wear something PINK every day to promote awareness to show those affected we are with them year-round and not just the 31 days of October! Who’s with me???

The point is. If you’re experiencing the wash, rinse, repeat blues then do something about it. A little change in routine, sales presentations, or even your appearance can make a big difference to your attitude and your sales results.

Now, go sell — change — something.

Attitude is everything

This distributor recommends surrounding yourself with successful people — a successful mindset leads to a successful business.

Cornwell distributor Jason Neil has been in the tool-selling game for around 25 years. During that time, he’s been both a distributor and a district manager, but has ultimately come back to being a distributor because it allows him to do his own thing.

Growing up, Neil’s father owned a service station that introduced the distributor to the world of cars. It was through watching his father run his business that Neil decided he wanted to run his own business as well.

“I wanted to own my own business,” Neil explains. “But one thing that I was struggling with is [my father] always had issues with employees, and I wanted something with either very little employees or no employees, and that’s ultimately what led me to being a dealer.”

KEEP ‘EM COMING BACK FOR MORE

Along his route through north Seattle, Neil mainly visits independent shops, dealerships, and body shops. Aside from showing up every week with a full truck, Neil sets himself apart by offering a variety of promotions to his customers.

From giving away Seattle Kracken hockey tickets to a toolbox full of tools to virtual reality goggles, Neil keeps his

customers coming back for more by running a new promotion every quarter. But that’s not all. On top of those promotions, during the holidays, Neil likes to give away some freebies to all his customers.

“Every Christmas I give away to every single person on my route, a bag of Almond Roca, and I give them a $20.00 off Christmas cash coupon,” Neil notes. Additionally, during Easter, he likes to give away Peeps along with tons of candy during Halloween.

TIPS FOR NEW DISTRIBUTORS

Over the years, Neil has seen the “right” and “wrong” way to do things in this business. His three tips for distributors just starting out are be consistent, surround yourself with successful people, and vary your types of payment options.

BE CONSISTENT

Neil notes whether it’s showing up on time or following through on getting a tool to a customer, the best way to find success as a distributor is by being consistent.

“There’s always gonna be somebody else around that has more tools than you on your truck,” Neil says. “And if you don’t have [a tool], a lot of times guys can’t wait ... [and] you better figure out how you can get it to them the next day.”

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE

Neil recalls that he got to where he is today by talking with other distributors and learning from them. He notes that

he’s often in contact with Cornwell’s number one distributor, and the two like to discuss how much they’ve sold. For Neil hearing that the other distributor may have sold more than him that day helps to motivate him.

“You’re not gonna get that motivation from a person that’s not doing good or somebody that has a negative attitude,” Neil says.

The distributor has a keychain from when he first started as well as a medallion, that both say, ‘Attitude is everything.’ He likes to keep them close as a reminder to always have a good attitude.

VARY YOUR TYPES OF PAYMENT OPTIONS

Nowadays cash, checks, and credit cards aren’t the only available means to pay for goods and services. Apple Pay, Google Pay, Venmo, and many other mobile payment methods are available as well.

Neil recommends having an alternative credit card processor that allows you to accept more forms of payment.

“There are other avenues to collect money,” he says, “and you have to eliminate your customers’ excuses for not paying you.”

SPEC GUIDE 2024 SCAN TOOL

Updated information for manufacturers of Global OBD-II, Professional Diagnostic, and Heavy Duty Diagnostic scan tools.

Welcome to the 2024 Scan Tool Spec Guide, brought to you by Professional Tool & Equipment News, Professional Distributor, and Fleet Maintenance magazines.

It’s been eight years since we started putting together this guide, and arguably as the years have passed, the need for shop owners and technicians to have the right scan tool/s has only increased. Though the basic format of this guide has stayed the same, each year we work hard to update every section to reflect the advancing technology of this industry. And with those advancements, that are only continuing to evolve, the scan tool remains one of the first tools a technician is reaching for to diagnose a customer’s vehicle.

While OE scan tools have their place, this guide is dedicated to many of the aftermarket scan tool options available. According to our research in the 2024 Aftermarket Profile study — found in the April issues of PTEN and Professional Distributor — 78 percent of technicians are relying on aftermarket scan tools in the shop. That’s up six percent from last year’s study.

So, if you or your shop is looking to add another scan tool to your collection, we’ve got you covered. We provide information from 25 aftermarket scan tool manufacturers all broken down into three categories: Global OBD-II, Professional Diagnostic, and Heavy Duty Diagnostic.

Over these next several pages, you’ll find the most up-todate product information for aftermarket scan tools available on the market from many of your favorite manufacturers.

Whether you’ve had a scan tool break, need to update your tool to a newer model, or your current scan tools just don’t do everything you need them to, let this guide be a reference for you as you narrow down what features you’re searching for. Purchasing a new scan tool is a big investment, so take your time flipping through these pages to help figure out exactly what scan tool fits all your requirements.
