omehow, we’re already heading into the final few months of 2026. I feel like I say this every year, but this one has flown by. Between putting together each issue of PTEN, attending industry events, talking with technicians and manufacturers, and keeping up with everything happening across the industry, there has been a lot going on, and there’s still plenty ahead. September always feels like the point in the year when things start picking back up. Summer is coming to an end, schedules are getting busier, and before we know it, we’ll be heading into some of the biggest industry events of the year. It’s also a good time to look at what’s changed since the beginning of the year. We’ve seen plenty of new tools and equipment introduced in 2026, but we’ve also continued to hear about the challenges technicians are facing in the bay. Vehicles aren’t getting any simpler, and neither is the equipment needed to service them. Diagnostics, AI, ADAS, battery and electrical service, programming, and other areas continue to require technicians to stay on top of
new technology and new procedures. That gives us plenty to cover here at PTEN. Over the next few months, our team will be doing exactly that. We’ll be bringing you more new products, talking with technicians about the tools they’re using, covering the industry events where many of these products are introduced, and continuing to look at the service areas that are changing the most. One of the things I’ve enjoyed most this year has been getting more technicians involved in our content. Hearing directly from the people working in the bay gives us a much better idea of what you want to read about and what information is actually useful. So, as we head into the last stretch of the year, I’d also love to hear from you. If
there’s a tool you love, a topic you want us to cover, a challenge you’re seeing more often in the shop, or something you think other technicians should know about, reach out. We still have a few months left in 2026, and we plan to make the most of them!

Problem: Nobody Line-Items a Rounded Bolt The cost of fastener damage is real, measurable, and almost entirely invisible to the systems shops use to track productivity.

rounded fastener has no labor code. It does not appear on the estimate. It surfaces somewhere else entirely: as a job that took a day and a half instead of a day, as a technician who looks slow on paper, as a comeback because something got cut off and re-tapped under time pressure at 4:30. ooking back at my June 2025 article (VehicleServicePros. com/55292174) on this subject, I talked about the electrified future arriving faster than many shops expected. Well, for shops in certain regions, that future has arrived. Out-of-warranty BEVs and hybrids are showing up at independent shops across the country. The question isn’t whether we’ll service them; it’s whether we’ll do it safely, profitably, and without comeback-killing margins.

SAFETY FIRST — NO SECOND CHANCES! Although many of the maintenance routines don’t require you to don highvoltage (HV) personal protective equipment, your knowledge and awareness of these systems must be current. HV systems don’t forgive mistakes. I can’t

stress this enough — if your shop isn’t equipped and trained for HV work, which begins with safety, don’t touch it until you are. Always refer to the latest service information procedures during service. When HV work is required, you’ll need to be equipped with the basics. Class 00 insulated gloves (tested and certified), insulated hand tools, CAT IV-rated multimeters, test leads, probes, etc., are mandatory (Figure 1). Lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures are for everyone’s protection. Leveraging the power of mega- and milli-ohmmeters is also a top priority. Developing an understanding of the dynamics here is extremely important. Consider loss-of-isolation faults and how contaminated drive units or refrigeration loops could present faults under certain conditions that may not be present after being towed into the shop.
CREDENTIALING Getting up to speed will take dedication, and proudly displaying those certifications, accomplishments, and capabilities will go a long way towards discovery. We pick up new clients every
month, and a common theme I’m hearing is “I used AI to find a competent shop.” That should tell you a lot about how you need to think about marketing your skills and capabilities. Posting your credentials, such as ASE L3 (Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicles), on your website and social media sites should help feed the AI brain about your company and capabilities.
THE RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB Couple yourself with the right tools for the vehicles you service. You don’t necessarily need every new scan tool on day one, but you do need tools that provide actionable data on EVs such as faults, cell balancing, pack voltage, thermal data, charging information, and more. • OEM Access — Tesla: A Tesla Toolbox subscription (Figure 2) provides a wealth of access and embedded diagnostics. Service Mode, detailed data logs, remote diagnostics, and procedures that aftermarket tools often can’t match. In my opinion, the remote access is a game-changer, and I would welcome other manufacturers to do the same.

• Aftermarket scan tools: Look for platforms with strong EV coverage, such as battery pack data, bidirectional controls, and thermal management diagnostics. The Autel EV Diagnostic Kit (Figure 3) is one that I have, and I have found that it can provide battery pack data above and beyond what is offered elsewhere. • Specialized gear: Megohmmeters, milliohmmeters, motor testers, and oscilloscopes will be required at some point (Figure 4). Training to leverage their power is essential. Some of the tools you already have can likely serve in this space, but beware: you will need certain insulated tools to perform some service and repair routines. Battery lift and support tools will also be needed. And let’s not forget, proper personal protective equipment will be required as called out in service procedures.
BATTERY HEALTH AND THERMAL MANAGEMENT — THE CORE OF EV LONGEVITY The battery is the most expensive component on the vehicle, so keeping it healthy is priority one for customers

and your reputation. Some aftermarket tools offer state-of-health (SOH) test routines that will provide a health assessment. My recommendation is to start performing these tests for your clients while the vehicle is within its warranty period. Doing so will help you understand what the data is revealing, what’s normal, and what’s not. Also, keep in mind that BEVs and scan tools are software-defined, and things can and will change over time (Figure 5).
THERMAL MANAGEMENT HVAC, cooling systems, and drive units often work together depending on the vehicle platform, so each subsystem must be fully understood. For example, the radiator on many EVs is not

mounted perpendicular to the ground plane and is therefore more susceptible to debris accumulation, which can significantly reduce cooling performance. The same applies to non-liquid-cooled condensers. Regular inspection (and cleaning when needed) of these areas is recommended. The refrigeration system also requires periodic maintenance. The desiccant filter (Figure 6) package is typically replaced every five years, but you should always confirm the exact interval in the manufacturer’s service information. The desiccant absorbs moisture; if it becomes saturated and is left unchecked, excess moisture can contribute to high-voltage isolation faults. Regular visual inspections of
hose routing, quick-connect fittings, compressor mounts, and piping supports help ensure long-term reliability of BEV thermal systems.
THE REST OF THE EV MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST EVs aren’t maintenance-free — they’re just different. • Brakes: Regenerative braking means pads and rotors last much longer, but fluid still needs regular attention, along with caliper sliders, especially in harsh wet/snow environments. Always be sure to check the required brake fluid specifications. Most modern vehicles — particularly those equipped with advanced

ABS, ESC/ESP, and ADAS systems, including the majority of new EVs — require or specify low-viscosity (LV) brake fluid (typically DOT 4 LV / ISO 4925 Class 6). Always verify the exact OEM material standard for the vehicle being serviced. • Tires and alignment: Higher curb weights and instantaneous torque delivery in EVs commonly accelerate tire wear. Periodic suspension inspections are recommended, as the increased mass and torque often cause premature wear of lower control arms, compliance arms, and associated bushings — problems also frequently seen on non-EV vehicles. • Low-voltage systems: In EVs, the DC-DC converter in the power conversion system replaces the alternator found on conventional
ICE vehicles, stepping down highvoltage battery power to supply and charge the low-voltage (LV) system. Its performance can be quickly validated with a carbon-pile load tester when battery posts are accessible. While Tesla LV systems perform automated background health monitoring, Service Mode and Toolbox provide diagnostic routines that assess LV battery status and DC-DC support; becoming familiar with these procedures is valuable during vehicle inspections. • Drive units: Although many manufacturers list drive-unit fluid as a “lifetime” fill. Clean, fresh fluid consistently delivers better long-term protection and service life than fluid that has been neglected. On Tesla vehicles, the stator is frequently energized as a resistive heater (“toaster”)

to warm the drive-unit oil, which in turn helps precondition the battery for supercharging. Vehicles that supercharge regularly subject the fluid to more thermal cycles and should have the drive-unit fluid (and filter, if equipped) replaced more frequently than those that primarily use Level 2 charging.
THE BOTTOM LINE The first step is to determine your addressable market. Applying AI tools to credible DMV data can be an effective way to start. Once you have confirmed that BEV service is viable for your business, actively market your capabilities and certifications. Share case studies on your website and social media channels and highlight testimonials from satisfied EV owners — these go a long way toward building brand credibility. Never stop learning. Invest in your team and their ongoing education. Look at the vehicles in your own f leet. If you offer loaners, consider cycling in hybrids and BEVs. Driving these vehicles regularly can provide valuable hands-on perspective that strengthens your service business. ower and air tools are an essential part of your toolbox in the shop. Both are great options; however, preference changes with the end user and the region you work in. Battery-powered tools give you a cordless experience and freedom to use them wherever and whenever. Whereas with air tools, you need the air supply from a suitable compressor to use them.

A few considerations you should note before purchasing any batterypowered tools are battery life, battery size, and heat generated. Air tools can run at full power for extended periods of time if the air pressure is sufficient, and this is helpful in areas like the Rust Belt where rust and corrosion are heavy on vehicles. If you live in the southern regions of the U.S., as I do, we generally run all cordless tools for the convenience of not dragging an air hose around. There is also the fac-

Let’s look at some examples of power and air tools in the shop.
DAILY USE BATTERY-POWERED TOOLS One of the first examples is a 1/2” impact. The one that I use daily on the job is the Milwaukee Tool M18 FUEL 1/2” Mid-Torque Impact Wrench w/ Friction Ring, No.2962-20. I chose
this for a few reasons: it’s lighter than the high-torque version, it is sufficient to use on wheels and suspension parts, and paired with a Milwaukee Tool M18 REDLITHIUM FORGE XC6.0 Battery, it lasts 1-2 days on a single battery charge with heavy use. Having a lighter impact leads to less fatigue on the job if you have to use it for an extended amount of time. mileage may vary depending on what region you’re working in, as I mentioned earlier, and what brands of vehicles you work on. Warranty is important to consider as well with these tools. For example, Milwaukee Tool offers a five-year warranty on their battery-powered tools. Another thing to note is that many battery-powered tools come in kit versions which include one or two batteries, a charger, and the tool to help get you started in that battery line. After

you get a few batteries, you can just buy bare tools instead of kits to save some money. Continuing with battery tools, another one I want to highlight is the Snap-on 14.4V 3/8” Drive Impact Wrench, No. CT861AMDB. It is an upgraded version of their 3/8” drive cordless impact. As technology advances, so does battery and tool performance in the cordless world. This particular impact features a rocker-style trigger versus a more traditional forward and reverse selector. This allows for quick direction changes, which can be beneficial on stuck or rusty fasteners. Aside from using penetrants, working a fastener back and forth is a common tactic for rusted and corroded bolts. This impact does well with passenger cars and light duty trucks due to its size and power combination.

AIR TOOLS TO KEEP IN ROTATION Now that we’ve covered a few battery-powered tools, I want to highlight some air tools. One tool that really shines well with being air-powered is die grinders. Die grinders are very common in automotive shops and have a wide range of applications, from surface prep like cleaning hub surfaces on brake jobs, cutting seized shock stems out in tight areas, and clean-

ing mating surfaces with the appropriate prep disc for the job. There are a few die grinders from Sunex Tools I want to mention — the 115 Degree Angle Die Grinder. No. SX5204, 0.5hp Straight Die Grinder, No. SX5207, and 0.5hp 90 Degree Angle Die Grinder, No. SX5208. Having multiple die grinders and different angles can really help you on the job. All of these die grinders are 0.5hp and have a 1/4” collet for arbors or carbide burrs. Personally, I keep one with a surface prep pad, one with a wire wheel, and one with a cut-off disc so I can quickly change between different grinders on a job instead of having to swap out the arbors. This is one place air tools can save you some money when buying multiple tools, especially if they are not all the same brand; you don’t have to worry about batteries to power them, just an air source that works for all your air tools. Depending on the tool, air tools are generally cheaper than their battery-powered counterparts. Another air tool that is essential to your toolbox is an air hammer. Before this year, there were no battery-powered options for air hammers until Milwaukee Tool unveiled their new M18 FUEL STRIKER Hammer Chisel as a cordless option. When using an air hammer, the consistency of the
air being delivered to the tool helps with maximum force for longer periods of time. This is where air can be a better option since battery life will deplete and must be recharged as use of the tool lengthens. I have used the Snap-on Super-Duty Air Hammer, No. PH3050B, for the majority of my career. The trigger has phenomenal control, and I have been very happy with the performance of this tool.
A SPECIALTY POWER TOOL Jumping back to impacts, there is a variant of the 3/8” and 1/2” drive impacts with the right-angle impact wrench. Right-angle impacts can help you get into tight spots that a normal impact would be too bulky for. Generally, there is less torque in a right-angle impact due to its design, but there are a few that get the job done well. One of them is the Milwaukee Tool M12 FUEL 1/2” Right Angle Impact Wrench w/ Friction Ring, No. 2565-20. I use this one a lot for sway bar links due to the mounting location of the links,

as well as for brake calipers. Being able to get the right-angle impact in tighter areas helps you be more efficient, and without having an air hose attached to the tool, you have less to worry about when twisting and turning to try to get access to some fasteners.

THE FIRST TOOL TO INVEST IN The last tool I want to highlight is the electric ratchet. This has become one of the most used tools in our industry. Having an electric ratchet makes doing most jobs quicker and more efficient than having to turn bolts out with a traditional ratchet. These are not impact wrenches, so they will not have high torque, but electric ratchets allow you to break a fastener free like a traditional ratchet, then pull the trigger and spin the bolts out. In my opinion, this is one of the first power tools a technician should invest in. Pretty much any job you do in the shop, an electric ratchet can be used. I often use mine to run down the fasteners until they are snug before torquing them to specification. The Milwaukee Tool M12 FUEL 3/8” Ratchet, No. 3053-20, has 70 ft-lbs of torque and 400rpm of speed, making it a good mix between power and speed, as well as interchangeable triggers for different user preferences.

I do think if you plan to buy batterypowered tools, do some browsing to see which brand offers the most versatile selection for your application to help keep your toolbox uniform and your tools on one battery platform. For air tools, make sure the tools deliver sufficient performance for your needs and for what your shop air can accommodate. Most air tools have a psi rating for their optimal running pressure and performance. Everyone’s needs vary, but I believe battery- and air-powered tools both have their places in the shop, and finding what works best for you can be dependent on many factors.

Having some type of indicator on the mechanism that would aid in aligning the handle to the gear would be helpful.

Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it? A: The quick lifting ability of the jack was very nice to get the pad to the vehicle frame with just a few pumps. On the jack stands, the remote adjustment feature was very handy. The jack stands allow for more space when working under the vehicle. Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why? A: An 8. I love the idea of the extendable handle on the jack stands; however, the mechanism could be designed better to allow easier insertion of the tool end. It is also not uncommon for these tools to be used on test drives where, eventually, the battery dies. This is really convenient, and any shop should have a few for their mechanical and technical specialists to use for those purposes.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why? A: A 10. Like most of my reviews, it may seem odd to assign a rating of 10 to something like a 400W Power Inverter, but the reality is that it fills a need, does exactly what it says it does, does it well, doesn’t over complicate matters, and I’ve used it daily for a few weeks and have had zero issues with heat, noise, or electrical stability. So, how can I not give it a 10? If it were wireless, I’d give it an 11.

A: I used these leads along with 4mm banana test probes to bypass sections of wire within a harness to locate
circuit faults. Having a stackable 4mm end would have been helpful for taking voltage measurements when doing so. Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it? A: The shrouded straight and 90-degree 4mm banana ends are what set this lead set apart from others. With this arrangement, the user has the flexibility to use whatever 4mm test probe they would like. Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why? A: An 8. Another drawer is dedicated to pliers, with the same approach continuing throughout the rest of the box. Having a system is important, but Switzer says technicians shouldn’t feel locked into the first organization method they try. “Don’t be afraid to reorganize if you feel like you should,” he says. “Stuff that seems like the right idea when you are first filling it up may change after you’ve been working out of it for a while.”

A
fter years of working out of a smaller setup, technician Nick Switzer knew exactly what he wanted when it came time for a new toolbox. Switzer has had his Mac Tools triple-bay Macsimizer box for about four years. Outfitted with a hutch and side locker, the bright green setup gives him plenty of room for his tools while also providing a dedicated workspace. Before making the switch, Switzer worked out of a double-bay box with a half side cabinet and top chest. When he was ready for something bigger, he traded in that setup and started looking at what would give him the storage he needed without spending more than he wanted. One of the biggest selling points was being able to build the box around his preferences. “I was able to custom build my box

MAKING THE MOST OF THE SPACE While the size of the box gives Switzer plenty of storage, the hutch and side locker have become two of his favorite parts of the setup. “I love having a hutch as a personalized workspace,” Switzer says. “But I also really like the way the locker is laid out for maximum storage space.” Switzer keeps his main box organized by grouping similar tools together
BUYING WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED Switzer takes a similar practical approach to buying tools. Rather than immediately investing in large sets or bundle deals, he recommends technicians build their collections around the work they are actually doing. “Buy what you need to start, then buy what you borrow, then buy things that you think could make your job easier,” Switzer says. That focus on usefulness also shapes Switzer’s advice for technicians shopping for a toolbox. For him, price should be one of the biggest considerations, rather than the name on the badge. He also recommends knowing exactly what you are committing to before making such a large purchase. “Know what you’re getting into before it rolls off the truck,” he says. “Make sure you actually want the box you are purchasing.” Switzer’s current setup still has some room to grow.
