What this year’s Aftermarket Profile reveals about diagnostics, purchasing, and the modern repair environment.
By Nadine Battah, Editor-In-Chief Nadine@VehicleServicePros.com
ach year, the PTEN
Aftermarket Profile provides a detailed look at how shops are operating and where technicians are focusing their time, attention, and investment. Built on insights from more than 500 readers, the report offers a clear snapshot of the priorities shaping today’s repair environment and the tools supporting that work.
One of the most consistent themes throughout this year’s findings is the continued importance of diagnostics. Scan tools and diagnostic equipment remain among the highest-return investments in the shop, reinforcing just how central they have become to modern repair. At the same time, technicians are increasingly relying on a mix of aftermarket and OEM resources, subscriptions, and connected devices to complete their work accurately and efficiently.
The data also reflects how purchasing behavior continues to evolve. Mobile tool distributors remain a primary source for tool purchases, but online platforms, retail locations, and direct-from-manufacturer channels
are all playing a role in how technicians acquire equipment. Even more notably, a large percentage of technicians report making purchasing decisions based on what they see in industry media, highlighting the influence of information and education in the buying process.
Beyond purchasing, the Aftermarket Profile highlights the broader demands placed on today’s shops. From general maintenance and electrical diagnostics to reprogramming and air conditioning service, technicians are being asked to handle a wide range of repairs, often requiring specialized tools and ongoing training. At the same time, emerging technologies such as ADAS and telematics continue to shape how shops approach both equipment investment and service capabilities.
Taken together, the findings point to a repair environment that is becoming
more technical, more connected, and more dependent on the right tools at the right time. As vehicles evolve and systems become more complex, the role of tools and equipment continues to expand beyond convenience and into necessity.
For more detailed insights from this year’s results, turn to page 16 for the full Aftermarket Profile.

Blair BFD-KX+ Magnetic Drill
Q & A with Jerry Mills, sales manager at Hougen Manufacturing.
Q: What makes this product innovative?
• Durability in tough environments: Built in the USA with industrial-grade components, it stands up to heavy daily use.
• Improved safety: Integrated safety shut-offs and secure magnetic adhesion help reduce worksite risks.
Overall, shops can cut fabrication times and expand the range of jobs their teams can tackle with confidence.
A: The Blair BFD-KX+ Magnetic Drill stands out because it combines powerful metal drilling performance with a compact, low-profile right-angle design, giving fabricators and technicians the ability to drill clean, precise holes in tight and confined spaces where traditional mag drills can’t reach. Key innovative features include:
• Low-profile right-angle form factor ideal for narrow, restricted areas
• Dual-level magnetic base for enhanced holding power and stability
• Front work light and intuitive controls for better precision in all conditions
• Tool-less quick-connect cutters (TQC) for speedy setup and changeouts
• Karbon X+ cutter technology that extends cutter life and smoothness of cut
Q: What was the inspiration behind creating this product?
A: The BFD-KX+ was born out of real-world feedback from professional fabricators and maintenance technicians who regularly struggle with drilling operations in tight or awkward spots, such as truck frames, machinery supports, structural steel, and confined metal assemblies. Blair designed this drill to solve two often competing needs: high cutting capacity and maneuverability in areas where standard magnetic drills simply won’t fit.
Q: How will this product improve the lives of technicians and shop owners?
A: Because of its compact footprint, high reliability, and ease of use, the BFD-KX+ improves productivity and reduces operator fatigue with:
• Greater accessibility: This allows technicians to reach and drill holes in areas that once required disassembly or awkward setups, saving time and effort.
• Speed and efficiency: Quick-connect tooling and magnetic stability speed up setup and drilling cycles, increasing throughput.
Q: What has been the feedback from technicians who’ve purchased this tool?
A: While there are limited formal reviews published by third-party sellers, user sentiment in the field (based on toolmarket listings and industry feedback channels) suggests technicians appreciate the BFD-KX+ for its balance of power, portability, and ease of cutter changes. Early adopters especially note that the compact design actually works in places they previously avoided, and the Karbon X+ cutter system provides cleaner holes with less chatter and tooling wear compared to older mag drills.
Q: Anything else our readers should know?
A: Absolutely, the BFD-KX+ is small-batch manufactured in the USA, reflecting Blair’s focus on quality and support for professional fabricators. It ships with a carrying case, Rotabroach lube, and safety strap, so technicians can get right to work out of the box. Pairing the unit with the complete Karbon X+ cutter lineup (available in multiple sizes) unlocks its full versatility for fabricating, repairing, and maintenance work.

TOOL REVIEW: VIM TOOLS 2-PC PATENTED LOCKING PLIERS, NO. FRLP100
Reviewed by Erik Screeden, technical and multimedia content director for EndeavorB2B.
How did the tool function as far as saving you time?
Locking pliers are one of those things that are not needed every day, but are invaluable when you need them. These locking pliers have well-built, durable jaws that do a great job of gripping stripped fasteners.
How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability?
Locking pliers are one of those items that, when the need arises for them, you can’t go without. Whether removing a stripped fastener or simply holding one when a third set of hands is not available, they offer time savings that directly equate to increased productivity.
Q: How easy was it to use?
A: Very. It has smooth operation and an easy release, which not all locking pliers have.
Q: What features did you like?
A: I loved the aggressive and well-constructed jaws. The teeth are well-defined and robust. The dual-purpose jaw design is a great feature that is not shared by many of the other locking pliers on the market. I also loved the release; other locking pliers have a secondary release that can be a challenge when the pliers are adjusted tightly.

TECH TIP: REMOVING MANGLED OR SWOLLEN LUGS
Removing wheels is a routine part of servicing vehicles, whether for tire changes, brake jobs, suspension work, or drivetrain repairs. Over time, lug nuts take a beating from impact tools, road debris, and general wear, often becoming damaged, mangled, or swollen—especially on vehicles with chrome cap lugs. Here’s how to tackle them effectively.
Ease up on the torque! Over-tightening lugs with impact tools only worsen damage—precision matters. Inspect and clean lugs before removal. Dirt, mud, and debris can prevent a socket from fullY seating. Select the right socket. Ensure the size, depth, and outer diameter allow proper engagement without damaging the wheel. For swollen or misshaped lugs, use a half-size socket. Many modern lugs don’t always fit standard sockets. Flip sockets like the ones found at CTA offer a dual-size design (Example: 21mm on one side, 21.5mm on the other) for a precise fit. Pair them with a 1/2” drive extension for use with impact tools or wrenches. With the right approach and tools, stubborn lugs become much easier to remove— saving time and frustration in the shop.

Built with intention
From carbon trim details to a spotless white finish, this toolbox reflects a technician focused on precision, organization, and long-term performance.
By Nadine Battah, Editor-In-Chief
For Josh Hunter, owner and technician at Hunter Automotive in Stover, Missouri, a toolbox is more than storage. It reflects years of experience, personal discipline, and a clear vision of how a workspace should function. His Snap-on setup, stretching roughly 14’ across, was not purchased all at once. It was built piece by piece over time.
Hunter began assembling his box around 2015, starting with the base and gradually adding components, including a top chest, side locker, side cabinet, and eventually a Snap-on diagnostic center integrated with a Zeus workstation.
“I don’t have money like my box looks like I have,” Hunter says, “I started piecing it together.”
That approach is part of what makes the toolbox stand out. Every section has a purpose, and nothing feels excessive or out of place.

A CLEAN LOOK WITH A PURPOSE
One of the most striking features is the color. The white Snap-on box is uncommon in most shop environments, where darker finishes are typically chosen to hide wear. For Hunter, the decision ties back to his early experience working in high-performing Volkswagen dealerships, where cleanliness was a priority.
That mindset still shows today. Despite the lighter finish, the box remains spotless, reinforcing both pride in his workspace and attention to detail in his work.
CUSTOMIZATION THAT TIES IT ALL TOGETHER
Customization plays a major role in the setup as well. Carbon trim accents run across the box, adding both visual
contrast and functional value. Hunter specifically points out that the trim allows him to rest his arm without risking grease marks on the white surface. In areas where factory trim was not available, including the diagnostic center and an added file cabinet, he sourced and cut pieces himself to maintain a consistent look.
Lighting is another standout feature. After discovering that the factory light he wanted had been discontinued, Hunter worked with his distributor to track one down across the country. It was not an easy find, but it was worth it to complete the build the way he originally envisioned.
ORGANIZATION THAT WORKS FOR THE JOB
When it comes to organization, Hunter keeps things practical. “Just wherever it fits,” he says, explaining that tools are grouped by type and frequency of use, “and if I need to move it, I’m not opposed to that either.”
Even with its size, the box is not completely full. Hunter still has open drawer space, giving him room to grow without needing to expand further.
BUILT TO LAST, NOT JUST TO IMPRESS
Despite the scale of the setup, Hunter has no plans to make it any larger. Part of that comes down to his preference for symmetry within the shop layout, but it also reflects a sense of completion.
From its clean aesthetic to its carefully built structure, Hunter’s toolbox reflects a long-term approach to investment and organization. It is not about having the biggest. It is about building something that works, lasts, and represents the technician behind it.
