HALLOWEEN SPOOKTACULAR HISTORY:

The Bob Baker Marionette design team took to the early 1950’s at a pivotal moment for the spooky season of Halloween that we know today! Keen eyes may recognize costumes from Walt Disney Production’s animated short, ‘Trick or Treat’, featuring Donald Duck and his nephews, Hughey, Dewey and Louie. This short has been accredited for helping re-popularize trickor-treating in a post WWII America, and deterring the trouble-making “tricks” that were on an unruly incline. We think that’s pretty important, seeing as it has shaped the aesthetic our whole show is based on (plus, we love the theme song!)! And now you know!

Complimentary balloon twisting at 2:30 pm and free snacks!

Bob Baker Marionette Theater’s mission is to preserve, educate, and innovate at the intersection of Puppetry and the Allied Arts.

Bob Baker Marionette Theater, founded by Bob Baker and Alton Wood in 1963, is the oldest children’s theater company in Los Angeles, and in June of 2009 the theater was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. With boundless imagination and wonder, The Bob Baker Marionettes have been telling stories and entertaining children and adults for over 60 years. Kids get to move around and interact with the beautifully crafted marionettes. Handled by master puppeteers, the marionettes are always the stars of the show and captivate children in simple yet fascinating ways.

Bob Baker’s journey with marionettes began during his time at Hollywood High School, where he crafted toy puppets that gained international recognition. After graduating, he honed his skills at George Pal Animation Studios, quickly rising to head animator for the Puppetoons series. Baker’s expertise extended beyond puppetry, serving as an animation advisor for film studios like Disney after World War II. His puppets appeared in television classics like Bewitched, Star Trek, and NCIS, and films including A Star Is Born, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind

The theater’s original location on 1st Street in downtown Los Angeles,

once a special effects workshop, was its home for decades. When the theater was named a historiccultural landmark in 2009, the Los Angeles Times captured the occasion perfectly:

“A parade of puppets strung along Los Angeles City Council members today long enough to persuade them to designate a West 1st Street marionette theater a historic cultural landmark. The puppets danced and pranced around the City Council’s ornate horseshoe-shaped desk in the City Hall chambers before officials voted 14–0 to place the Bob Baker Marionette Theater on the city’s landmark list.”

Today, the theater remains a vibrant testament to Bob Baker’s legacy, blending artistry, craftsmanship, and a touch of magic.
