EDITOR'S NOTE
What earns a spot on the truck?
A few days at the MEDCO Customer Show offered a closer look at how much goes into deciding which new products are worth bringing back to the route.
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Nadine@ VehicleServicePros.com
I
Going into a show like MEDCO, I usually have a long list of new products and topics I want to learn more about while I’m there. This time, one thing I kept noticing was just how much there is for a distributor to take in before deciding what actually makes sense to bring back to the truck. During the training sessions, manufacturers had the opportunity to spend more time explaining their products, showing how they worked, and answering questions from distributors. Once the show floor opened, those distributors were surrounded by even more new tools and equipment, special offers, demonstrations, and opportunities to add something different to their inventory. Watching that process gave me a better appreciation for how many decisions go into stocking a tool truck. Space is limited, and every product taking up room needs a reason to be there. A new tool may look interesting on the show floor, but a distributor still has to think about which customers could use it, whether the price makes sense for their route, what they already have in stock, and how confident they feel explaining or demonstrating it once they get back home. It also made me think about how much new product information distributors are expected to keep up

spent a few days in Nashville last month for the MEDCO Customer Show, where our team sat in on training sessions, talked with distributors and manufacturers, and spent plenty of time walking the show floor looking at what was new.

with throughout the year. We see hundreds of product announcements come through our inboxes and that’s before you account for everything manufacturers are introducing at shows, through promotions, or directly to their customers. That’s something I plan to keep in mind as we plan our coverage. Showing you a new product is useful, but giving you enough information to understand where it fits, what it does differently, and whether it might make sense for your customers is much more valuable. We came home from Nashville with plenty of new products to share, along with interviews, demonstrations, and other coverage from the show. I hope it all gives you a little more information to work with the next time you’re deciding what deserves a spot on your truck!

2026
very year since 1999, the PTEN Innovation Awards have featured the newest and most innovative products introduced to the automotive aftermarket, and this year is no different. For 2026, PTEN received more than 100 product entries in 27 categories. These same products, voted on by our panel of industry judges for the Innovation Awards, are also entered into PTEN’s People’s Choice Awards. This is our 12th year running the People’s Choice Awards, where we ask our readers to weigh in on which new products they think are the most innovative – and we had thousands of votes. Throughout the next several pages, you’ll find the winners for both PTEN’s Innovation Awards and People’s Choice Awards. In some cases, you’ll see that the readers’ votes matched the judges’ when deciding on a winner, and in others, you’ll see that the readers chose a different product to rise to the top. DYNAMIC TOOLS
44-pc Insulated Socket and Tool Set
The set offers a complete insulated tool line-up with a full 3/8” drive metric range plus hex bit, Torx, nut drivers, and a cable knife.
APPLICATION
H
The Dynamic Tools 44-pc Insulated Socket and Tool Set is designed for: • Electrical panel and load center work: breaker changes, terminations, panel and cover hardware. • Motor control center, starter, contactor, disconnect, and switchgear maintenance. • Plant and MRO work on motors, drives, control cabinets, and machine electrical systems. • Solar and battery energy storage installation and service.
FEATURES AND BENEFITS
SELLING POINTS
• Forty-four pieces: 12 standard sockets (8 to 19mm), seven deep sockets, five hex bit sockets (4 to 10mm), eight Torx sockets (T10 to T45), eight nut drivers (5 to 11mm), a 3/8” drive quick release ratchet and extension, an insulated adjustable wrench, and a cable knife.
• Insulated tools are required in many work settings. That makes this a compliance sale, which closes faster than another chrome socket set.
• Generator, transfer switch, and standby power service.
• The 45-tooth quick-release ratchet turns in roughly 8 degrees of arc, making it usable inside a crowded panel or switchgear cabinet.
• EV charging station installation and service, and high-voltage battery and drivetrain work on hybrid and electric fleet vehicles.
• Deep sockets reach studs, long threads, and busbar hardware without stacking adapters that would break the insulated barrier.
MANUFACTURING SPECS
• Dual-layer red and black foam with size-imprinted cutouts, which allows users to find the right size quickly and spot missing tools.
• Manufactured in Taiwan • Multi-layer injection-molded insulation over the tool body • Case: Approximately 17” by 14” by 3.5” with lockable blow molded plastic and two removable foam organizers • Ratchet: 3/8” drive, 45-tooth, 7-3/4” long • Extension: 6-3/4” long • Adjustable wrench: 8-1/2” long • Cable knife: 7-1/2” long
• A complete set to finish the job, featuring a full 3/8” drive metric range plus hex bit, Torx, nut drivers, and a cable knife, so the technician never has to reach for an uninsulated tool mid-task. • Every tool is individually tested at 10,000V AC, VDE certified to 1,000V AC, and compliant with IEC 60900. • Limited lifetime warranty with North American service from Gray Tools. • Built in repeat business. Any nick or cut in the insulation permanently retires that tool, so the set leads to ongoing replacement sales.

Keeping up with THE CHARGE Battery and electrical service has changed significantly over the last several years. Mac Tools distributor Steve O’Leary shares what he’s seeing on his route and what distributors should know to keep up with their customers’ changing needs.
MORE THAN A CHARGER
By Nadine Atiya, Editor-In-Chief
W
hen Steve O’Leary started as a Mac Tools distributor in March 2011, battery and electrical service was a much simpler category. A jump pack and a basic battery tester could cover many of the needs technicians had. Chargers were there when a battery needed a charge. Electrical testing was often handled with a multimeter. And when a battery was
“Five years ago, most battery and electrical work started and ended with a jump pack and a basic tester,” O’Leary says. “Today’s vehicles have far more modules, sensors, and tighter voltage tolerances, so a marginal battery can cause a cascade of downstream issues that look like something else entirely.” For distributors, keeping up with those changes requires more than adding a few new products to the truck. It means understanding how battery service fits into the larger diagnostic process, what technicians are trying to accomplish with the equipment, and, in some cases, being ready to show them how a tool can make the job easier.
replaced without a memory saver, the consequences might be an annoyed customer who had to reset the clock and radio presets. A lot has changed in 15 years. O’Leary now has seven trucks covering New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley, with his own route in Orange County. As vehicles have become more electronically complex, he has watched the battery and electrical products his customers need change right along with them.
One of the biggest changes O’Leary has seen is the role of the battery charger. “Chargers are a must-have, especially for reflashing work, where shops need a stable power source through the whole process,” he says. That need for stable power is changing what technicians should expect from professional charging equipment. Today’s vehicles can have dozens of electronic modules operating at the same time, and many diagnostic, calibration, and programming procedures

COVER STORY require stable voltage for an extended period, explains Kimberly Cottle, CEO and president of Associated Equipment. If voltage drops during module programming or reflashing, the procedure could fail, generate diagnostic trouble codes, or, in some circumstances, damage a vehicle module. Because of that, choosing a charger is no longer only about how quickly it can bring a discharged battery back up. “Professional battery chargers have evolved from relatively simple charging devices into essential pieces of diagnostic and service equipment,” Cottle says. Jim O’Hara, EVP-Merchandising at Clore Automotive, has seen that evolution over his own career. When he joined Clore in 2002, a shop might have had a couple of wheeled chargers that were brought out when needed. Today, he says, charging should be much more routine. “Vehicle comes in, the hood goes up, charger goes on,” O’Hara says. Part of the change comes from what technicians are doing while the vehicle is in the bay. Diagnostics, programming, and other service procedures can place demands on the battery before a repair is even completed. Battery technology has changed as well. “Even the ‘easy sells’ have gotten smarter,” O’Leary says. “A lot of today’s chargers can identify the battery type, AGM, gel, standard flooded, and adjust the charge profile automatically, tapering off as the battery approaches full.” The automation makes the equipment easier to use, but that doesn’t eliminate the need to understand what it is doing. Cottle points out that AGM, EFB, conventional flooded, and lithium SLI batteries don’t necessarily use the same charging profile. There is also an important difference between charging and power supply or reflash modes.
One is intended to restore and maintain the battery, while the other maintains stable vehicle voltage as electrical systems and diagnostic equipment operate. For O’Leary, those additional capabilities give the distributor an opportunity to do more than simply put a charger in front of a customer. “It’s still worth walking them through what the charger’s actually doing so they trust it and use it right,” he says.
capabilities can serve individual bays, while wheeled chargers continue to offer flexibility for shops that need charging, maintaining, jump starting, and other functions. He describes the wheeled charger as the “Swiss Army knife of the shop.” The same idea applies throughout the battery and electrical category. The best option is not automatically the tool with the longest list of capabilities. The distributor needs to know what the customer is trying to accomplish.
FIND OUT WHAT THE SHOP NEEDS
DIAGNOSING THE DRAW
As the equipment becomes more capable, recommending the right product also means asking more questions. Rather than starting with amperage or price, Cottle recommends finding out what kind of work the shop actually performs. Vehicle mix is one consideration. A general repair shop, dealership, collision center, tire store, or heavy duty fleet facility can have very different charging requirements. Whether the customer services conventional passenger vehicles, start-stop systems, European vehicles, commercial vehicles, or a mix of 12V and 24V applications can help narrow down what equipment makes sense. From there, distributors can dig deeper. Does the shop perform module programming or ADAS calibrations? Does it need crank assist? How frequently will the equipment be used? Does the charger need to move between bays? What battery technologies does the shop regularly encounter? “Distributors create the most value when they match the charger to the customer’s work, not simply to the battery,” Cottle says. O’Hara sees a place for several different types of charging equipment depending on the customer. Smaller smart chargers with power supply
Charging is only one side of the equation. O’Leary says intermittent electrical faults and parasitic draws are two problems his customers continue to face. “They’re tough because the problem isn’t always present when the tech has the vehicle on the lift,” he says. “It might only show up under certain conditions, or drain slowly enough overnight that it takes real patience to trace.” At the same time, technicians have more information and more specialized equipment available to help them track those problems down. David Merendino, Sr. Director of Sales - Global at Power Probe, says the most important tool is still knowledge. “A fundamental understanding of wiring schematics is essential, but deeper info on topics like measuring voltage drops across a fuse can help speed diagnostics,” Merendino says. Tools such as draw testers, fuse testers, and circuit testers can help technicians work through those problems more efficiently, but they do not replace the fundamentals. That creates another consideration for the distributor selling them. O’Leary points to Power Probe’s draw and fuse testing products as examples of tools that can be valuable

COVER STORY to technicians but may not necessarily sell themselves. “If the distributor doesn’t know how the product really works, they can really fall behind,” O’Leary says. “While the product is great, it does take more understanding to demonstrate the proper use of the tool.” For a mobile distributor carrying products across dozens of categories, becoming an expert on every tool on the truck isn’t realistic. Merendino acknowledges that challenge. “Mobile tool distributors have a huge product line that they offer techs, so it’s challenging to become an expert on every tool,” he says. “Knowing where you can get dependable info is critical.” Manufacturer training videos can help fill that gap. Power Probe, for example, offers short- and long-form videos and places QR codes on products and advertisements that direct users to demonstrations. Merendino says distributors can use those resources with customers while also learning more about the tools themselves. It’s a way for distributors to educate themselves without having to become electrical trainers overnight.
BATTERY SERVICE TOUCHES MORE OF THE VEHICLE Another reason product knowledge matters is that the consequences of battery service have changed. Merendino uses the memory saver as an example. Years ago, replacing a battery without one might erase the clock or a customer’s radio presets. It was inconvenient, but usually little more than that. Today, a loss of power during battery replacement can mean having to reset functions such as window or sunroof motor limits or perform certain safety system relearns. That same interconnectedness is why O’Leary says scan tools have
As battery and electrical service becomes more integrated with other vehicle systems, distributors need to understand which tools fit their customers’ work and how to demonstrate their applications.
become a bigger part of battery and electrical work. “Scan tools have gotten a lot more capable on the charging system side, so a lot of diagnostic work that used to require separate equipment is happening right through the scan tool now,” he says. The change has altered what O’Leary considers a well-rounded battery and electrical offering. “A well-rounded offering needs to cover testing, charging, and diagnostics together, not just one piece,” he says. For parasitic draws, he points to specialized testing equipment that can help technicians isolate the source. Load testing on both the power and ground side is another capability he sees value in, particularly because electrical issues don’t always originate where a technician initially expects them. “A lot of electrical gremlins actually trace back to a bad ground, not the power side people usually check first,” O’Leary says. Combine that type of electrical testing with smart charging equipment and the diagnostic information available through a scan tool, and the category looks considerably different than it did just a few years ago.
DON’T OVERLOOK THE JUMP STARTER Not everything in the category requires a lengthy demonstration.
R
✓ Clore Automotive’s Jump-N-Carry JNC305 lithium jump starter delivers 300 Start Assist Amps and is designed to provide portable starting power for a wide range of passenger vehicles.
O’Leary says compact lithium jump packs have become increasingly popular with his customers. “Techs like the smaller footprint and how easy they are to grab and use on the fly,” he says. O’Hara has also watched lithium jump starters make significant gains in capability compared to where the technology was five or 10 years ago. That doesn’t necessarily make lead-acid jump starters obsolete. Different customers and applications can still call for different solutions, and O’Hara says distributors should understand those differences rather than assuming one technology is right for every shop. That goes back to the same question distributors should be asking

GETTING READY FOR HYBRID AND EV SERVICE The next shift is already happening. As more hybrid and electric vehicles enter repair shops, O’Leary says distributors should pay attention to the equipment technicians need to work around higher-voltage systems. “Old-school multimeters just can’t cut it anymore,” he says. O’Leary points to CAT III and CAT IV rated meters, as well as insulation testers, as products that are becoming increasingly relevant. On his own truck, that includes Mac Tools’ EM830 and EM930 meters and EM680 insulation tester. “Distributors who aren’t stocking rated meters and insulation testers are
going to fall behind as more of these vehicles come through shop doors,” he says. For shops, however, preparing for that work can present a dilemma. “Shops are hesitant to make a significant equipment investment without knowing the total amount of EV and hybrid work that will come into their shops,” Merendino says. Power Probe developed its PPEVTEST with that concern in mind. The tool combines a CAT-rated multimeter, 1 kV insulation tester, and true-Kelvin clamp milliohm meter into one unit designed for electric and hybrid service. Electrification doesn’t mean the low-voltage side of the vehicle is going away, either. Cottle notes that although an EV or hybrid may use a high-voltage propulsion battery, it commonly still relies on a low-voltage battery to
operate computers, controls, contactors, and safety systems. Looking ahead, she expects charging equipment to continue moving toward higher continuous output, more precise voltage control, broader battery chemistry support, and better documentation and connectivity. For the distributor, that means the category will likely continue to grow rather than simply swap old products for new ones.
KEEP LEARNING For O’Leary, keeping up with the category means understanding how the products on his truck work and being able to demonstrate their proper use. As battery and electrical tools become more advanced, that product knowledge can make a difference in helping customers choose the right tool for the job.

Building customer relationships
Your customers are the most important part of your business, so the way you engage with them matters. By Kevin Haitmanek, Contributing Editor
W
hat do you think is the most important part of your business? A good inventory? A good route? A good name on your truck? I am sure most of us would say the customers are the most important. Without customers, we have no business, obvious, right? But how did we get those customers, and how do we keep them? We all have different selling styles, but we all need the same type of customer — ones that buy and pay well.
CUSTOMERS DON’T BUY THE PRODUCT; THEY BUY “YOU” I am sure you have heard many times that the customer is not buying your product but buying you. While that statement is true, there are many factors that go into it. Building strong relationships with your customers is the core of it all. When you have a good rapport with them, your customers know you are selling them a quality tool, with you and your reputation standing behind it. If we think about it, we do the same thing in our business: where we get our fuel, who services our truck, or any purchases we make. If we look at it, the place and people make a difference.
CREATING LOYALTY
Photos courtesy of Kevin Haitmanek Bowlin
Customer loyalty is very important, and not something you can buy. It is built, not bought. Giving a customer a super discount or letting them get a big balance only trains them to think they can get a super discount or big balance. This does not equate to loyalty. Loyalty is built on trust. Both parties should treat each other with respect and honesty. This is nothing new to anyone. I found that running an honest business is pretty easy to build. If I take care of my customers, they take care of me. For me, customer loyalty starts with running an honest business and taking care of my customers as I would expect from someone I do business with.

FINDING NEW CUSTOMERS Finding new customers can be challenging at times. If you are a franchisee, your designated area or route is what you have to work with. If you are independent, then the world is your oyster, and you’re free to go wherever you wish. Finding new customers in your current call list is not impossible, but it takes a little thought. For example, in a dealership, you already talk and sell to the techs, but what about the service writers or parts people? Yes, they don’t work with tools all day, but maybe they do at home. I am sure a lot of them work on their own vehicles or even their family and friends’ vehicles. It only takes one or two extra customers to really improve a stop. Also, look into some of the nonautomotive shops in and around your area. Manufacturing companies have staff for equipment or facility repairs. When I first started, someone stopped and asked me about some hand tools, and it turned out they worked for a business that made machines for shipping boxes. They turned into one of my best Thursday stops. I drove past that building for a year or two and never thought about stopping in. Do you do all the fleet companies around you? How about the home improvement vans or trucks we see? Some of those bigger companies have their own repair garages. All it takes is a quick conversation with one of the drivers to find out. Thinking outside of the regular stops we call on can open us up to more available customers and potential business growth.
BRINGING BACK INACTIVE CUSTOMERS Another way to connect with your customers is to renegotiate with those who haven’t bought in a while or those who have paid off their accounts and
don’t seem interested in starting up again. Sure, there comes a time in a technician’s career when they get really tooled up, and it is hard for us to sell them tools. But there is one thing all tool distributors know — almost all technicians are “tool junkies” and love new tools. No matter where in their career a technician is, if we have a tool that makes their job easier, it is an easy sale. For the customers that haven’t been buying, is it because they are tooled up, or are they upset about something? Maybe you made a mistake and charged the wrong price, forgot the price you quoted, or didn’t put a payment in your system. While it is an uncomfortable conversation, asking if you have done something that caused this is a start to getting them back. Over the years, I have been faced with this many times, and as tough as it is to do, asking what I did wrong, at the very least, allowed me to fix it and make it right. You are not going to get all of your “lost” customers back, but if you “repair” a couple of them, then that is all the better.
KNOW YOUR CUSTOMERS I’ve found that if I take care of the relationship side, the sales come fairly easily. Ask yourself, do you really know your customers? I try to not only know their names and how much they owe me, but also something personal about them. It can be anything, like asking them about something that you know is going on in their life, how their favorite sports team is doing, or how their vacation was. It doesn’t take much, so show a customer that they are more than just a number to you. If the other tool guys on your route are only about the sale or their money, then that extra little sign of caring can really set you apart from them. We are all out here trying to make a living, and we all know it is not easy. It is hard, but it is no excuse for treating people poorly. Taking care of my customers has allowed me to build a good reputation for myself. Simply doing good, honest business and a little extra effort got me there. I try to treat my customers right, and they have been treating me right for 30-plus years.

SHOW ME YOUR TRUCK
The six-million-dollar tool distributor This Mac Tools distributor helps his customers buy tools that are better, stronger, and faster. By Emily Markham, Editor
I
n May of 2025, Mac Tools distributor Foster Troutt bought a new-to-him tool truck. The 2017 Ford F-650 was built by Herr Display Vans and originally owned by a Cornwell distributor, who then became an independent. Foster’s truck is now in its third and final iteration. Part of his decision to purchase a used tool truck was because he didn’t sell or trade in his old one in hopes that someday he might find a second driver, so he can split up his overflowing route. Foster notes that because there hadn’t been a Mac distributor in his area for so long, his list of stops has grown rather long. He makes stops throughout Saint Peters and O’Fallon, Missouri at a variety of places – large truck shops, mom-andpop shops, dealerships, a few different chains like Firestone, Dobbs Tire and Auto Center, and Plaza Tire Service, and an industrial company that preps land for buildings.
THE DESIGN While this truck wasn’t his design, Foster is pleased with the layout and the truck’s many features. “I really like the way this was built,” he says. “If I was to make my own truck, it would be very similar to this.” In the past, he had a 16’ “bread truck,” but his new one is a 20’ wide body. Both he and his customers appreciate the extra space the new truck offers, as now, two customers can pass each other shoulder-to-shoulder in the aisle without having to move out of the other’s way. Foster’s only regret is not having gotten a larger truck sooner. “I would have bought a bigger truck in the beginning had I realized, but I didn’t want to go too big,” he explains. “I didn’t want to have too big a truck route. And here I am eight years later saying, ‘Why didn’t I do that in the first place?’” Other features include two tall and one short set of shelves and outside storage lockers. The shelves have matching lighting to the rest of the truck, and Foster is able to wheel them in and out depending on whether he’s got a toolbox and cart on the truck. As for the lockers, he notes that there’s a heater in one, a generator in another, and four other compartments where he can keep some of his larger items that don’t move as often but are good to have on the truck.
ORGANIZATION STYLE Foster describes his organization style as “managed chaos.” “I keep a box for each day of the week in my garage for the needs for that day, so I don’t have everything on the truck at one time.” He also likes to keep a shelf at the front of the truck full of new and promotional products so it’s the first thing his customers see. He switches the items out every four weeks when he gets a new flyer with the latest new products. To keep all the small items organized, he uses a lot of hanging strips as well as four vertical pull-out shelves. Two of the shelves have bungee cords for hanging products, while the other two have Velcro carpet. Foster likes these as he finds that they hold a lot of items in one small spot. For his workspace, he has an L-shaped desk behind the driver’s seat. Here, he has space for his printer, his laptop, and a monitor to run the sales system. He also plans on adding a microwave to this space. In his drawers, he keeps his ratchet repair tools, office supplies, broken tools, and folder organizers to hold his catalogs.
TOOL TRUCK RULES While a new tool truck can help you get more people on the truck and looking around, the way you run your business is what keeps them coming. Foster lives by the rules of being fair, honest, and consistent. “When I meet a new customer,” he says, “I tell them, ‘I’m not your pushy sales guy. I’m here to help you do your job like the Six Million Dollar Man — better, stronger, faster.”

TOOL DEALER 101
What it takes to become a mentor
To be an effective mentor, your one main job is to help your mentee succeed. By Brian Fahlgren, Contributing Editor
O
ne of the most gratifying roles I’ve ever experienced is that of a mentor. Having a positive impact on another person’s life leaves you with an unequaled feeling of accomplishment. I’ve had some incredible mentors in my life. It feels similar to paying back a debt when your role changes from mentee to mentor. It’s satisfying to pass on a little bit of the guidance I too received. The example I like to use happened at a national event where I was teaching toolbox selling skills. In the audience, I noticed the man who had taught and mentored me when I first
started in the business. He was my first district manager. We had both changed flags and roles. He went back on a truck, and I was a district manager. I didn’t want to embarrass him, but it felt good to call him out and recognize him as the person who taught me the skills that helped me to become successful.
WHAT MAKES AN EFFECTIVE MENTOR? While there isn’t one specific quality or action that makes someone a quality mentor, it all comes down to how you engage with those around you.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T To be an effective mentor, I think the most important element is being a person who has earned the respect of their peers. You can’t expect respect; you have to earn it. Many people have had experiences with leaders who believed you had to respect them because of their role or position. It’s extremely important to have earned respect based on the way you conduct yourself and treat others. Earned respect comes from your actions every day.
PUT YOURSELF IN THEIR SHOES
Empathy has to be a close second. Putting yourself in other people’s shoes gives you a better understanding and perspective of the challenges they are dealing with. As a manager, I had a few experiences of being at the corporate office with new dealers
on their first day of tool school. I can remember addressing the groups at breakfast. I’d tell them, “If you’re not sitting here with a ton of anxiety, there’s something wrong with you! All of you are starting a life-changing experience. You’ve no doubt quit good jobs and invested a lot of money. But every one of you has the capability of owning a successful tool business. You need to be open to listening to those around you who have been successful as they try to guide you.”
OPEN YOUR EARS, NOT YOUR MOUTH Listening is another important element of being a mentor. I’ll be the first to admit, I sometimes (a lot of times) forget there’s a reason we have two ears and one mouth. Without listening to others’ ideas, concerns, and challenges, you’ll never know how to help others to achieve their goals. And yes, having obtainable goals that you set for yourself and with your mentee allows for the measurement of progress. It helps to maintain focus and identify both strengths and weaknesses. To me, not having set goals is like trying to navigate without the benefit of a map.
USE YOUR EXPERIENCE A mentor also should have real-life experience. How could you expect to advise anyone if you’ve never “walked in those shoes?” In my role as district manager, I relied on my own

experience of running a successful tool truck when advising other dealers. The knowledge I earned from not only my success, but also my failures, was immeasurable in my role as a mentor. It should be a requirement to have first been a dealer prior to taking on the role of district manager. My last opportunity to mentor a new tool dealer occurred when I decided to retire. For a number of reasons, one of my customers, Elias Valdovinos, was the first person I thought of to take my route over. Fortunately for me, Valdovinos thought it would be a great opportunity. Like the well-known proverb about teaching a man to fish, I helped teach him how to fish. Not only did he become skilled at fishing, but, by the analogy, he went on to be one of the best commercial
fishermen in the business. However, I’m positive he would have been a successful dealer even without a mentor.
THEIR SUCCESS IS YOUR REWARD I’ve written before about my “other family” — my tool family. This “family” has been one of the greatest gifts of owning a mobile tool business. Little did I know my last opportunity to mentor a new dealer would also be the most significant. The relationship I have with Valdovinos is closer to that of father and son than mentor and mentee. It turned out to be the ultimate way to exit with the benefit of now having a “son” in the business. It’s hard to describe the feeling when assisting someone else and their own success ends up being
your greatest personal reward. This sense of purpose provided an excellent transition to my retirement. If you have the opportunity to be a mentor, I’d suggest you take on the role. You might just find out that it’s one of the most rewarding decisions you’ll ever make. BRIAN FAHLGREN started in the tool business in 1998. Falhgren has been an employee dealer, franchised dealer, and district manager for two different flags. In 2018, he returned to the driver’s seat of his own tool truck. Performing product demos
Performing a product demo can help answer your customers’ questions before they even ask. By the Professional Distributor Editors

W
hat better way to showcase a tool’s features than through a demonstration? Providing your customers with a product demo allows them to better understand how a tool works, what it’s meant to be used for, and how it might help them do their job better. Whether you demo all your products or just a certain few, we reached out to five distributors to see how they handle performing demos.
1
Demo where your products are
“I don’t really do the tote-and-promote thing. Unless I have a pile of multiple [products]. However, I’ll always promote something new and fancy. I’ve been walking into shops with Olight’s ArkPro. I demo stuff on the truck more when customers come out.” -Scott Bowles, Cornwell Quality Tools
require a demo. The truck jacks or transmission jacks, those are pretty standard in function. But there are a couple of different tools that I’ve demoed over the years for pulling bearings or pulling seals. A new device may come out, and I’ll pick it up and show the guys. It makes the job a little bit easier.” -Duayne Sharpe, Cornwell Quality Tools

3
Demo new or complex technology
“Scan tools are the main thing I demo because most of the other tools don’t
Let your customers test out the tools
“Most of the demos I do are for new products or something that they
haven’t seen, or that hasn’t been on our sale flyers. I’ll pretty much demo anything that’s in the flyers because you’re trying to sell them. I’ll get three or four [customers] together and talk [the product] up — features and benefits, and how it’s gonna save them time or how it’s gonna save them money or what have you, and then pass it around. Feeling is believing. I also tell [my mentees] — and I may or may not practice it consistently — you can take any one item off your truck. Maybe you’ve been sitting on this item for six months, and you want to sell it. Just carry it and show it off to every shop until it sells. And it will. It’s just a question of when and to whom.” -Foster Troutt, Mac Tools
4
Get it in their hands
5
Use it in the shop
“I demo everything from scanners and cordless tools to various pullers and even smaller items, like Lisle electrical connector pliers and VIM clip and disconnect tools. I’ve even turned tools into fidget toys while customers are shopping just to get them into their hands. For me, any good demo starts with putting the tool in the customer’s hand, whether I’m showing them its features and benefits or letting them use it right there in the shop or on the truck.” -Douglas Simms, Matco Tools
“With our Mac RBRT impact extractor sockets, I tell customers to show me the most rounded bolt they have in the shop. We’ll hammer the socket on, and I let the customer crank it out themselves. When the tool is in their hands and they can see firsthand what it can do, it makes a difference. That’s the key to a good demo: let the customer use the tool.” -Steve O’Leary, Mac Tools
