Uncertainty reigned in the year 2025, but fear not my faithful friends, better times are coming—eventually.

Dictionary.com says the Word of the Year is “67.”

First off, it’s 6-7—two numbers, not one word—and the expression, which has no real meaning, only counts when accompanied by the hand gestures. And second, the adults in the room know full well only one word epitomizes 2025: “uncertainty.”

Yet somehow, we can’t even agree on that.

One week in September summed up this era’s absurdity for me.

The stretch started with a visit to Coal City, Illinois, for G&D Trucking/Hoffman Transportation’s now-iconic employee appreciation event, where Heisman Trophywinning quarterback Tim Tebow echoed a powerful message from the carrier’s leaders about “holding the line” amid unprecedented social and economic circumstances. Tebow, an openly devout Christian, appeared only 10 days after the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, so security for the outdoor event was heightened. Two days later, my wife, a Hispanic bilingual special education teacher, cried through a meeting with her principal about a problematic paraprofessional, a white lady, who accused her of being racist. The principal about fell out of her chair when my wife told her she’s married to a white man. The principal fired the para a few hours later.

The next day, I heard everybody’s favorite president congratulate billionaire Diane Hendricks and STE on the grand opening of their highly automated tank trailer production facility in Beloit, Wisconsin—on the same day a former boss of mine alienated half his Facebook friends with a profane post about “MAGA morons” and Tylenol. But wait, it gets better. One day later, a teacher referred my goofy teenage son to the office for a threat assessment after an off-color comment about Kirk. Unwisely, he tried to make his friends laugh by saying he hoped Texas Gov. Greg Abbott didn’t “get Kirk-ed” while visiting a new Fort Worth school, and we live far outside Houston where the suburbs meet the country—and people don’t play. I narrowly diverted that disaster by meeting with his assistant principal.

This all occurred before the government shutdown reached record territory as Bulk Transporter went to press. And we haven’t even talked about tariffs or the historically long freight recession.

Off-putting, indeed.

So, how do we operate in such an unpredictable environment when even the experts rarely agree anymore? By being smart, staying safe, and preparing for what’s next—just like Ryan Streblow, National Tank Truck Carriers president and CEO, urged attendees to do during Tank Truck Week 2025 in Kansas City, Missouri (page 24). After all, one truth people from all walks of life have acknowledged for centuries is “this too shall pass.”

I believe in this country, and this industry, and I also believe better times are coming, eventually. The Fed is finally lowering interest rates, NTTC is winning on duplicative security screening at the state and federal levels, CARB’s sway over EPA regulators is waning, Groendyke CEO and past NTTC Chairman Greg Hodgen is the American Trucking Associations’ 81st chair (page 29)—and my daughter’s select softball team recently won Texas USSSA Fastpitch’s Southeast Texas 14U fall state championship.

Additionally, this 88-year-old trade magazine is in the best position it’s enjoyed in several years—thanks to your support—and I’m already looking forward to telling all new tales next year, including stories about Usher Transport’s 80th anniversary—and LCL Bulk Transport’s 100th anniversary.

So, thank you for reading, please go subscribe to the magazine, and I’ll see you right back here in twenty twenty—six-seven! BT

Trimac acquires Service Transport Company

Trimac Transportation, a family-owned tank truck company headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, recently acquired Service Transport Company in a deal with Tres Energy that unites two safety award-winning for-hire carriers, expands Trimac’s presence in liquid bulk chemicals, and gives Service Transport’s customers and employees access to new capabilities and opportunities.

“We want to grow,” said Bill Marchbank, Trimac SVP of mergers and acquisitions integrations. “We’ve been in growth mode. This marks our 19th transaction since 2019, including companies we acquired or sold. So we’ve been very active. We believe we can grow organically, too—and we have an initiative to do that—but we also know that growth through acquisition is something we’re going to have to do, and that we want to do. And opportunities to be able to acquire a company like Service Transport don’t come along that often.”

The transaction comes less than eight months after Tres Energy acquired Adams Resources & Energy, the parent company of Service Transport, for $138 million in a deal that took Service Transport from a publicly traded company to a privately held operation. The

two parties signed the deal Sept. 15 after months of discussion, Harrison said. It closed Oct. 1. The transaction does not include Service Transport’s former sister operations, Firebird Bulk Carriers or GulfMark Energy.

“It’s definitely an accelerated growth path for us, especially in a market like this,” said Wade Harrison, Service Transport president. “In talking to legacy Trimac folks, they’re in a similar position freight-wise, at least on the chemical side, as we’re in. It’s not a great market right now, and growing in a market like this is difficult. But as we create synergies, we can identify new opportunities within our own network; and the growth may not necessarily be top-line growth, but the top line doesn’t matter. It’s all about the bottom line.”

UPT, Florida Rock & Tank launch ULogix

United Petroleum Transports (UPT) and Florida Rock & Tank Lines (FRTL) recently launched ULogix, a new logistics company.

ULogix was created to provide a comprehensive solution for customers by offering a robust suite of services, the companies reported. UPT and FRTL will expand ULogix offerings to existing customers, while improving and growing the brokerage service for customers already utilizing ULogix.

“This new venture has been in the works for some time and reflects our commitment

to growth and innovation,” said Matt Herndon, President and CEO of UPT and FRTL. “With a strong foundation in place from both UPT and FRTL, we are looking forward to watching this new brokerage service grow and succeed, further cementing UPT and FRTL as the nation’s premier transportation solutions provider.”

The creation of ULogix marks a “significant step forward” for UPT and FRTL as they continue to expand their service offerings, providing customers with a “robust and

Chemical-hauling expertise

Service Transport, founded in 1965 and based in Houston— where Trimac keeps its U.S. headquarters—is a provider of chemical-hauling services with 16 locations and four tank-cleaning facilities in the U.S. Gulf Coast. The carrier serves a range of top chemical producers, including shippers of hydrogen peroxide, acrylic acid, solvents, surfactants, and other specialty products.

Trimac’s acquisition includes about 300 drivers, 300 trucks, and 750 trailers.

“Service Transport Company has built a reputation for safety, reliability, and customer service, and we are thrilled to welcome them into the Trimac family,” Matt Faure, Trimac president and CEO, said in a news release.

reliable” transportation network supported by decades of industry experience, the companies added. ULogix’s creation also unlocks new jobs, and it’s expected to open the door to new partnerships as expansion continues.

“I’m so grateful for the team we continue to build, and I am excited about our new logistics service offering with ULogix,” Herndon said in a LinkedIn comment. “Saying ‘yes’ to our customers just became even easier. We are now your full-service transportation provider.”

TransWood recently won Dow’s 2024 Bulk Liquid Grand Champion award.

The Omaha, Nebraskabased liquid and dry bulk hauler secured the honor as the highest-performing carrier across critical road and purchasing performance metrics, including safety, shipment tracking, and service reliability, the companies reported. Dow is a long-standing TransWood customer.

“Receiving this award from Dow underscores TransWood’s steadfast commitment to safety and service,” Brian Wood, TransWood president, said in a news release. “It is a reflection of the discipline and dedication that continue to drive our culture.”

TransWood, a family-owned bulk hauler, has been in business since 1928. The carrier provides contract and dedicated carriage, hazardous materials knowledge, logistics partnering, quality management, and other specialized services from 40 locations across the United States.

Eagle adds rail spur in Georgia

After entering the Dalton, Georgia, market in the May 2023 acquisition of Bulk Carriers, Eagle Transport Corporation recently added a rail spur to further expand its presence in the bulk transportation sector.

The first railcar arrived at the Eagle rail spur July 10, with Dalton driver Caleb Carroll pulling the first load from the rail spur a week later. By Aug. 15, seven of the nine spots along the new rail spur were filled, the carrier reported.

“We are trying to dedicate the spur to powder loads primarily,” David Richardson, Dalton terminal manager, said in a news release.

“Rail space is very limited in Dalton, and expensive; we can grow our business by offering rail space.”

The recent addition of the rail spur has allowed Eagle to expand its impact on existing and new customers transporting powder products into the Dalton market.

“Joining forces with Bulk Carriers in 2023 has accelerated our dry bulk business, which began in 2017,” said Lance Collette, Eagle president and chief operations officer. “With the focus of our Dalton team, led by Kevin Brown and David Richardson, we are optimistic our growth will continue across our entire footprint.”

TwoSommers transforms bulk operations with BulkOffice

American Bulk Commodities recently transformed its digital operations using TwoSommers’ efficiency-boosting BulkOffice software platform.

The project entailed replacing the company’s outdated legacy systems with a secure, cloud-native transportation management system (TMS) that delivers faster dispatch-to-cash cycles; live driver tracking; automated invoicing, billing, and driver settlement; and back-office solutions—all backed by well-secured data, the Ohiobased IT services company reported.

American Bulk’s subsidiaries include John Brown Trucking, Southern Haulers, and R&J Trucking, a Boardman, Ohio-based bulk hauler founded in 1960 that today runs a diverse fleet of over 600 trucks and 1,000 trailers. “BulkOffice proves even the most complex, legacy-dependent operations can become agile, efficient, and futureready,” Bob Sommer, vice president of IT at TwoSommers, told Bulk Transporter.

“This transformation not only increased efficiency but positioned our client to scale and innovate for decades to come.”

Overcoming inefficiency

American Bulk, like many companies in the industry, struggled with operational inefficiencies caused by outdated infrastructure: manual dispatching without real-time visibility, paper-based billing prone to errors, slow driver settlements, and security limitations that restricted scalability.

By partnering with TwoSommers, which specializes in enterprise modernization, the carrier is embracing a modern TMS technology that leverages Microsoft Power Platform solutions.

G&D/Hoffman secures Responsible Care Partner certification

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) recently certified G&D Trucking/Hoffman Transportation as a Responsible Care Partner—a prestigious designation that reflects the tank truck carrier’s commitment to safety, sustainability, and responsible chemical transportation.

The Responsible Care Partner program is a globally recognized initiative that requires participating companies to uphold the highest standards of environmental, health, safety, and security performance. As a certified Partner, Channahon, Illinois-based G&D/ Hoffman has demonstrated compliance with

rigorous management practices, performance metrics, and independent third-party audits.

“This certification underscores our dedication to continuous improvement and our responsibility to the communities we serve, our customers, and our employees,” Jordan Hoffman, G&D/Hoffman executive vice president, said in a news release. “Becoming a Responsible Care Partner aligns with our values and further enhances our reputation as a trusted and reliable carrier in the chemical logistics industry.”

G&D/Hoffman is the second bulk hauler

to join the program this year, following Grammer Logistics’ certification earlier this year. The bulk truck sector makes up the largest group of Responsible Care Partners, with 45 certified companies, including Kenan Advantage Group, Trimac Transportation, Heniff Transportation Systems, Groendyke Transport, and many other leading carriers.

G&D/Hoffman has served the industrial chemical industry for 45 years, offering a full suite of services, including strategically located rail distribution facilities, specialty transloading, dry and liquid bulk transportation, and warehousing.

GRAND OPENING

MARKHAM, ILLINOIS

WHERE DEDICATION MEETS EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE

A talented team is leading the tank trailer lessor into a golden era of expansion

James Stinson and wife Kristin devoted three decades to solidifying Global Tank’s reputation as one of the most reliable providers of tank trailer leasing in the United States. Then, for the next stage of the company’s evolution, they enlisted help from family and friends, including their son, Grant Stinson, and former U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter pilot Jerry Stafford.

That future-focused investment is paying off in exponential ways.

The powerful combination of James’ even-keeled industry experience, Grant’s youthful energy and enthusiasm, and Stafford’s systematic discipline is enabling an unprecedented era of expansion for Global Tank’s fleet, locations, and capabilities—despite challenging conditions marked by tariff uncertainty, stagnant freight growth, and equipment overcapacity.

From right to left, Global Tank President James Stinson, Leasing Director Grant Stinson, and their Pasadena staff stand in front of a Wabash chemical tank trailer pulled by a Freightliner Cascadia truck. Global Tank opened a second Houston-area location in October.

“Grant runs at a million miles an hour. He’s young, and he’s motivated,” said Stafford, Global Tank vice president of maintenance. “I’m highly motivated as well. And then we have James [Global Tank president] at the head, and another talented new employee, Ryan Wagner, on the sales side.

“We’re a group of hungry individuals who work very well together.”

Their collective achievements include adding 450 tanks in the last two years

to Global Tank’s lease fleet, which now is one of the largest in the country, with over 2,000 trailers; establishing new sites this year in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Mobile, Alabama; and Houston areas; an ongoing upgrade of the company’s Charlotte, North Carolina, shop and external maintenance services across its network; and the return of tank trailer sales, which is punctuated by a recent agreement that makes Global Tank an authorized Wabash dealer across eight states.

“They have three decades of success in managing one of the industry’s most highly respected lease fleets, giving them proven understanding of customer needs across the diverse markets that we serve,” said Adam Quinn, Wabash senior director of tank trailer sales. “So, Global Tank features deep industry expertise, young talent, and James’ guidance as their seasoned leader, and that’s why we’re excited about the energy and vision their team brings.”

Generational success

James, 56, is the third generation of his family in the tank trailer business.

His grandfather, Jim Smith, bought and sold tanks as Global Tank Trailer Sales; his father, John Stinson, did the same, for himself and with several other companies over the years; and his great uncle, Bruce Hackett, sold new tank trailers for Standard Steel Works in Kansas City. “I’ve been around tank trailers since I was old enough to walk,” James recalled. James and Kristin revived the Global Tank Trailer Sales name when they founded their business in 1994 and rebranded as Global Tank Leasing a few years later after shifting their focus to leasing tankers.

Global Tank celebrated 30 years of serving bulk transporters in 2024.

“It’s shocking, to be honest,” James confessed. “Kristin and I didn’t have any means 30 years ago, so we bootstrapped the company, and that took a lot of effort in the beginning. It definitely wasn’t easy. But this industry is filled with great people who’ve always been willing to work with us.”

Global Tank opened its first location in Overland Park, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City, where its corporate headquarters remain. In 2005, Global Tank entered the Carolinas—through the acquisition of VSB Leasing—and Texas, where it operates in the Houston suburb of Pasadena and a newly established second Houston location; and in Midland, where sister company T&C Tank Rental runs a fleet of 600 frac tanks serving Permian Basin customers. Its expanded footprint, established in the last 11 months, reaches into Geismar, Louisiana, and Theodore, Alabama.

Today, the growing group boasts 50 employees, four companies (Global Tank Leasing, Global Tank Trailer Sales, Global Service Centers, and T&C), and a diverse collection of new and used tank trailers and containers for lease or sale, including sanitary, double-conical, and fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) units from Wabash; stainless-steel chemical, petroleum, and dry bulk trailers from Polar Tank and Heil Trailer; and aluminum vacuum tanks from Retesa.

“It’s small compared to a lot of other industries, but it’s very tight knit,” James said. “Everybody is super friendly and, in most cases, they’re willing to work together. There’s no animosity or anything like that. So, it’s a great place to be, and we’ve formed many long-lasting relationships.” The Stinsons also have instilled their entrepreneurial spirit— and industry passion—in their son. “My dad’s been running this company longer than I’ve been on the planet. He’s forgotten more than I’ve learned,” marveled Grant, who now serves as leasing director.

“The 30th anniversary really put that into perspective for me.”

Inherent industry enthusiasm

Like his father, Grant, who’s 23, also grew up around tank trailers. One of his fondest memories involves playing in Global Tank’s old Kansas City yard, climbing on tanks, and collecting shiny parts and pieces from the blacktop. “I thought it was fun to pick up all the scrap metal in the yard, because I

didn’t have any actual tools back then,” Grant laughed. “So, I would fill my little red toolbox with scrap metal from tank parts. It ended up being a little junk pile, really, but the guys knew that if they ever needed a part, my toolbox might have something in it.”

Grant started working part time in Global Tank’s Pasadena shop at just 14 years old, changing tires, brakes, and decals. Then he learned how to weld, began going on road calls and moving trailers around in the yard, and became a certified inspector at 18 before helping James run the Midland site. He joined the company full-time as soon as he graduated from the University of Arkansas’ Walton College of Business with a degree in supply chain management last year. “I graduated on a Friday and started that next Monday in the office,” he said.

His first achievement—even before coming on full-time—was returning Global Tank to its retail roots, starting with converting pitted chemical tankers to water tanks for farmers. The company now sells “hundreds” of tank trailers annually—and James couldn’t be more proud.

“Grant has a younger person’s fire, which is fantastic,” James said. “And he loves this industry as much as I do.

“He really eats, sleeps, and drinks it.”

As a father-son duo, their most recent win was with Wabash. Global Tank

now is an authorized seller of Wabash’s DOT 407 and 412 tanks, FRPs, and fertilizer and stainless-steel bolster tank trailers in Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. “We’re a stocking dealer, so we buy the equipment and then resell it,” James emphasized. “Most dealers out there are what we call ‘tank orderers.’ They find out how many tanks you need, and then relay that information to the manufacturer, who still must build them.

“We have tanks on the ground, so customers don’t have to wait.”

That’s only one of Global Tank’s top differentiators. They now have the size, scale, and savvy to meet any demand— from one specialized tank to 100 or more—while retaining the benefits of a family-owned operation, including open

communication, personalized service, and competitive prices.

“Nobody can compete with our pricing, especially on the leasing side,” Stafford maintained. “It’s not even close.”

Leaning into excellence

Key enablers of Global Tank’s attractive pricing include its expanding network of maintenance and repair facilities, and the overhead-reducing optimization of operations—advantages Stafford is set on strengthening.

Following a 20-year military career, Stafford jumped into lean manufacturing methodologies with Vallourec and Baker Hughes, and in 2018 joined Quala (now Depot Connect International), where he rose to VP of transformation. He joined Global Tank last year, bringing with him

a penchant for process-oriented problem-solving based on data analysis, and a focus on fully leveraging modern systems that empower “nimble” operations. “Once you’re in a routine, and you get everybody on the same path, following the same processes, doing things this way becomes a major disruptor in the market,” Stafford insisted.

“Nobody else in the industry operates the way we do.”

Global Tank now maintains full-service garages at every location, with five bays in Pasadena, four in Geismar, three in Mobile, and seven pull-through bays at its brand-new, 11,000-sq.-ft. facility on 10 acres in Northeast Houston; and it’s doubling shop space in Charlotte to four drive-through bays. Every “super-center” location offers R-stamp repairs, inspections, testing, and upfitting services to external customers, who now supply about 40% of Global Tank’s maintenance business. Custom upfits include standalone pump setups and discharge-line installs, and popular specs include 3-o’clock walkways, vapor-recovery systems, and 30-in. drops.

The company also shuttles tankers to and from customer locations and offers mobile trailer maintenance in-plant and roadside.

“We always try to do right by our customers,” Grant maintained. “We are honest with them, and we’re upfront about what we have and what we can do. Being able to understand their needs is more critical than anything else—and

our team is very good at that.” Stateof-the-art systems are only sharpening their skills.

Under Stafford’s instruction, Global Tank last year implemented Fullbay’s heavy-duty management platform, streamlining shop processes and accelerating turnaround times for customers.

“We allow our technicians to initiate service orders, change out parts, track repair times, and create their own writeups and stories, as far as key action items, and even reviews,” Stafford said.

“In the end, it saves me a lot of effort, because all I have to do is make sure everybody is properly trained.”

Global Tank also upgraded its website, globaltank.com, and turned to Toolbox Forms to digitize inspection paperwork, ensuring regulatory compliance and employee accountability.

“Toolbox Forms created an actual standard, and it’s electronic,” Stafford explained. “The beauty behind that is, if something is outside the parameters of what’s in FMCSA’s regulations, it’ll throw up an error code and tell you where to find the rule in the CFRs [Federal Code of Regulations].

“That way customers can be certain their equipment is compliant.”

A legacy built to last

With fresh faces, refined facilities, and transformative technology in place— all underwritten by three decades of dependability—Global Tank is poised to keep growing, whatever rolls its way.

“The industry has always had ups and downs, and we’ve gone through those times with it,” James said.

“You just adjust and try to help everyone as much as you can.”

The Covid-19 slowdown benefited Global Tank, with fleet managers who opted to reevaluate their equipment and service providers turning to them in the aftermath, Grant asserted. The still-sluggish freight environment gave the company time to adopt new systems, Stafford added. And now James expects tanker manufacturer’s backlogs to begin increasing next year, leaving more carriers in need of their help, either with leased trailers or maintenance.

“Personally, I think we’re at the bottom of the trough,” he predicted.

The impact of tariffs on trailer component and materials still is underrated, Grant continued, arguing that economic malaise is due to the uncertainty making everyone “a little more cautious.” James believes manufacturers will absorb most increases, rather than passing them on to customers. But, either way, Global Tank is ready to meet their new, used, or borrowed needs.

“Regardless of the economy, people need better vendors—and we have the greatest pricing,” Stafford reiterated. Thanks to his efforts, they also now have an easily scalable systems foundation. “Now I can start up a shop tomorrow without skipping a beat, and very minimal impact to how we operate,” he maintained. And Wabash’s support secures OEM-caliber staying power. “Our agreement solidifies our relationship and underscores our commitment to Global as an established dealership, and supporting them in their plans for growth,” Quinn concluded.

All of which has James thinking more about thriving than surviving in 2026.

“We’ve been blessed,” he said. “We really have.”

“Our growth has been amazing, and our team is fantastic. Oftentimes, growth can be painful, especially when you’re growing fast, but everyone here puts in the time and effort—and we get it done.” BT

Zero errors, faster loads

The concept isn’t complicated. Connecting loading racks with fuel haulers via seamless, end-to-end digital communications will reduce errors, increase truck throughput, boost safety, and optimize activities for everyone involved.

The execution is far more complex. The U.S. fuel supply chain—one of the world’s largest and most essential networks—is exceedingly convoluted. Various economic factors and strategic shifts have sparked myriad mergers, acquisitions, and divestments over the last 100 years, leaving legacy producers, refiners, storers, transporters, and retailers segmented into streaming silos; and multiple buyers, sellers, traders, and marketers exchange their bulk liquid commodities between initial exploration and end-user consumption.

“There is a great deal of complexity associated with how the market works here in the United States,” confirmed Ken Evans, general manager of energy and refined fuels at DTN, a global data and technology firm that serves energy, agriculture, and weather-driven industries.

“That’s why we feel strongly—across all the markets we serve—that trusted intermediaries are needed to bring cohesive insights to every stakeholder,” added Doug Bennett, DTN chief growth officer.

“A walled garden cannot fully serve this elaborate many-to-many ecosystem.”

Startup aims to upgrade the US fuel supply chain by digitizing the truck-rack experience

Fortunately, Tandem Concepts is on the case.

The Charleston, South Carolina-based software startup led by charismatic CEO Drew Stypa and systems-savvy Chief Technology Officer Will White is working hard to modernize archaic processes and bridge the digital divide that isolates tank truck carriers and fleets from their distribution partners in an endeavor that ultimately promises to inject previously unrealized value into the entire fuel supply chain—and their advocates hail from across this vital industry. Bulk Transporter surveyed 18 decision-makers across 11 participants, including some of the country’s largest storage terminal operators, transporters, retailers, and loading rack technology

Tandem Concepts’ technology promises to boost driver satisfaction at the loading rack.

providers in the country; and all agreed a solution to this long-standing problem is past overdue, and Tandem Concepts might be the firm that finally delivers.

“Their approach just makes sense,” insisted Steven Straight, senior manager of terminal customer services at Buckeye, which moves 2 million barrels of refined fuels across 130 petroleum product terminals every day. “And Drew’s done a great job of going out there and being evangelical, and his message is resonating because our supply chain partners recognize the problem, and there is a solution.”

Informed fuel haulers are especially enthusiastic—and no group is more excited than professional drivers.

“This system is a time-saving tool that’s revolutionizing order-based processing and improving my efficiency,” said David Milligan, a certified driver trainer with Eagle Transport Corporation, one of Tandem Concepts’ original launch partners. “I love that it helps prevent mispulls and allocation selection. I simply input minimum info, and all the details are locked in from dispatch.

“Everything you need to know is at your fingertips.”

Toiling in tandem

Stypa was working at World Fuel Services when inspiration struck during a visit to a wholesale customer’s fuel terminal. A driver with a long list of order details and a broken trailer probe “fat-fingered” one button on the tiny keypad—and fuel gushed out of the overfilled tank. “I started pulling on the strings and realizing how much of a ripple effect manual entry errors have on the supply chain,” he recalled. “At the highest level, there are up to 50 million annual transactions in one of the world’s largest supply chains, and there’s still no digital order communications between carriers and terminals. That’s what we’re trying to solve for.”

He met his future business partner at the Dinghy Dock bar on Saint Martin, where White retreated to escape the long hours in his cramped New York

apartment while working for Peloton during the Covid-19 lockdown. “We instantly became friends, probably because we were two of the more rational people on the island, both trying to work remotely,” White recalled. “And as he was telling me about this idea he was tinkering with, I thought, ‘This is crazy. That’s exactly what I do.’

“It’s data and software engineering, and logistics integration, and, at the time, I was combining Peloton’s systems with third parties like XPO and JB Hunt.”

The duo officially joined forces and commenced development of their fleet-focused approach to order-based loading in 2021—just as artificial-intelligence applications were advancing exponentially. Their now AI-powered, fully encrypted software-as-a-service (SaaS) uses anonymized prompts to validate carrier authorizations and driver credentials, check load allocations, and pre-populate product details before the truck reaches the rack. And the first “sandbox” test with one of the largest tank truck carriers in North America confirmed the system’s utility.

Tandem generated 40 electronic bills of lading and compared them to drivers’ manually entered information. All of Tandem’s were correct. Six of theirs were not—all due to process error. “They said, if we’d put this in the system, every order would have been right,” White relayed.

Tandem Concepts CEO Drew Stypa, at left, and Chief Technology Officer Will White are working with tank truck carriers and fleets, storage terminal operators, and software and hardware suppliers to modernize the U.S. fuel supply chain by digitizing loading racks.

“That was one of the best moments of my career.”

Storage and distribution

Loading racks are not the highest-margin points in the trillion-dollar oil-andgas value chain, so many competitors are indifferent to innovation in the space, Bennett suggested. But terminals that adopt Tandem-enabled techniques stand to gain as much as transporters. Decisionmakers with Buckeye, Phillips 66, and Global Partners indicated operators who tackle at-rack issues can alleviate lane congestion—thus boosting product throughput—decrease demurrage paid to detained haulers, and reduce rebates for redirected trucks.

Global helped Tandem fine-tune its disruptive technology; and teamed with Eagle and Toptech Systems for the first real-world deployment in Apex, North Carolina, in 2024. “Compared to the vendors I was talking to, the ideas were more real, and the conversations were more productive,” said Bill Cashin, vice president of technology for Global’s 54 U.S. terminals. “We were thinking the same things.” The company now is utilizing Tandem’s system at 11 terminals—with eye-opening, efficiency-boosting results. “I’m surprised more operators aren’t trying this solution,” Cashin said. “It’s not complicated, so most could manage the change.”

sites—following a 2023 test—and it planned to add two more in the fourth quarter. “We want to stay on the cutting edge of midstream innovation,” emphasized Aaron Marcynuk, Phillips 66 new technologies director. “We also want to be good business partners, so carrier relationships are important to us.”

Tandem now is live at Buckeye’s two Knoxville, Tennessee, facilities after clearing a recent pilot, and Buckeye is exploring a more comprehensive rollout as part of a larger initiative to overhaul loading-rack technology and equipment across its network. But, like other players in the segment, it needs more transporters to request the service to help propel proliferation that creates consequential scale. “While we’re currently navigating a range of technical service enhancements and offerings that would ensure a thoughtful and scalable rollout of Tandem, we remain optimistic that partnering with Tandem is not a question of if, but when,” Straight said.

“We’re highly motivated to accelerate this collaboration so the entire ecosystem can realize the benefits.”

Private and for-hire transportation Tandem Concepts’ presentation during National Tank Truck Carriers’ 2025 Annual Conference in Tampa, Florida, was met with considerable excitement from carrier and fleet representatives in the room, as well as Patrick Usher, Usher Transport EVP of corporate governance and NTTC Energy Services Committee chairman, with all agreeing Tandem’s platform can improve operational efficiency, driver satisfaction, and roadway and retail station safety.

Eagle reported executing “hundreds” of loading-rack transactions within the first few months of activating Tandem.

“One aspect that stands out to us is the seamless integration between our system and the loading facility,” said Mike Stevens, Eagle district manager. “It’s no secret that many loading errors occur at the terminal. With Tandem, we can effectively eliminate mistakes such as incorrect products, destinations, or customers. This streamlined process

ensures that our loading operations run smoothly and accurately. Drew and Will were instrumental in getting us up and running.

“We eagerly anticipate Tandem’s expansion to more facilities in the future.”

SWTO, a private fleet that serves more than 1,500 7-Eleven, Speedway, and Stripes convenience stores, recently executed its first deployment in Lubbock, Texas, in partnership with Phillips 66. Archie Wood, director of transport operations for SWTO’s fleet of 225 trucks and 250 tankers—which he expects to haul 2.3 billion gallons of fuel in 2025— plans to roll out Tandem across SWTO’s network as the system spreads, citing a three-fold value proposition of forward-looking product availability, simplified loading experience, and real-time data as compelling capabilities that are easily configured “behind the scenes.”

“Once loading is complete, electronic bill-of-lading (BOL) data is immediately available and includes the

[transportation management system] load number,” Wood said. “We’re working to add store/destination numbers to the BOL and integrate this data into our system, eliminating manual data entry and supporting the industry’s shift toward electronic shipping documents.”

Electronic BOLs keep drivers from pulling off the roadway to add load details to their electronic logging devices, and speed up reconciliation so fleets can get paid faster. Those are key motivators for planned launches by for-hire carriers Groendyke Transport, Penn Tank Lines, and United Petroleum Transports. “We’re currently upgrading our operating system and expect to begin testing Tandem Concepts in early 2026,” said Matt Herndon, president and CEO of UPT, which, along with sister company Florida Rock & Tank Lines, runs a fleet of 800 trucks and 1,000 tankers that put more than 13 million gallons of fuel in the ground every 24 hours.

Additionally, Pilot Company, which serves more than 900 Pilot and Flying J

travel centers across North America, and CLI Transport, which serves 815 Sheetz convenience stores, are evaluating the system, and particularly interested in preventing loading errors that cause cascading safety and accounting issues, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

“I’ve talked to carriers who have conducted thousands of transactions with zero errors using this system,” shared David Overton, Pilot senior director of logistics, who manages over 3,000 pieces of equipment used to supply the largest fuel retailer in the U.S. “So, I have no doubt this could benefit our industry.

“The question is how quickly does it scale to the market?”

Software and hardware Technology partners like Toptech and DTN, who provide fuel terminal software and hardware, are helping Tandem upscale its solution through integrations with leading transportation management platforms, including Gravitate and Trimble’s TMW.

Toptech provides the load-rack controllers, including its Multiload II+ system, drivers interact with at a majority of terminals in the U.S. and abroad; and it’s working with Tandem to incorporate Tandem’s technology into its Load2day SaaS, and TMS6 and TMS7 terminal management systems. “It’s an add-on solution for Load2day customers that allows them to take advantage of order-based loading without the overhead, which is handled by the carrier,” said Manish Patel, Toptech VP of technology. “By leveraging the Tandem Concepts solutions, terminal operators realize all the benefits without any negative impacts to fuel owners.

“They simply enjoy the positive effects of added value at their facilities.”

DTN’s offerings include its Guardian3 terminal automation hardware, TABS (Terminal Allocation and Billing System) software, “decision-grade” data intelligence on road and weather conditions, and integrations with leading business management software providers like SAP (which offers ERP

and CRM systems) and price reporting agencies like OPIS, all of which DTN— which acquired Tandem just before Bulk Transporter went to press—aims to combine in a fuel operations hub that leverages Tandem’s transformative connectivity.

“I’ve been waiting 30 years for someone to crack this nut, so kudos to Tandem for identifying the problem, taking it on, and asking, ‘Where can I make a difference in this industry?’” said Eamonn Clarke, CLI director of petroleum distribution, whose fleet of 280 tank trucks visits more than 100 different terminal racks and transports over 2 billion gallons of fuel annually.

A fully connected future

Tandem secured over 50,000 error-free loads—representing over 350 million gallons of petroleum products—through the first nine months of 2025, Stypa said, and he and White already are planning their next moves, including rolling out retail-specific programming and enabling rack reservations that guarantee allocations—the holy grail for U.S. fuel transporters. “Drew and Will do great work,” Marcynuk said. “If it’s possible, they can do it.”

Everyone Bulk Transporter consulted agreed allocation reservations are the most complicated capability to deliver upon, but they’re already available in Europe, Bennett said; and they’re possible here, too—and sooner than people might think—if all the vested parties unite.

“I’d hedge longer, but that depends on who gets a taste of it,” predicted Craig Yocham, Global SVP of terminals. “If the right customers ask for it in the next six months, you could compress that timing down to a year, because then you would be meeting real-world demands.

“Right now, we’re still cranking out the appetite.”

A fully optimized fuel supply ecosystem decreases friction at both ends, allowing transporters to increase equipment utilization and terminal operators to reduce stocks by aligning allocations with tank inventories—capacities everyone can appreciate in a challenging economy.

But nothing is possible without first modernizing rack communications.

“I can’t be convinced it’s a bad idea to digitally connect carriers and terminals, because this is probably the biggest logistics network in North America outside of Amazon, FedEx, and UPS,” White said. “It’s such a common-sense solution.” BT

Beloit’s biggest bet

The grand opening of the OEM’s highly automated new facility draws the attention of some of the country’s most powerful people—including President Trump

BELOIT, Wisconsin—The power of American ingenuity was on full display Sept. 23 at STE’s new tank trailer manufacturing facility in Southern Wisconsin—and some of the country’s most powerful people were paying attention.

STE’s official grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony featured prolific businesswoman Diane Hendricks, chairman of Hendricks Holding— STE’s parent company—her son, Brent Fox, Hendricks president and CEO; her daughter, Konya Hendricks Schuh, Diane’s co-star in new A&E show “Betting on Beloit;” U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin, along with other national, state, and local dignitaries—and even President Trump.

“A very special congratulations to Diane Hendricks and the entire Hendricks Holding team on the grand opening of your new Stainless Tank and Equipment [STE] facility, which will employ 200 American workers in

the great state of Wisconsin,” Trump said in a pre-recorded video message shown during a tour-concluding luncheon. “We won Wisconsin and Diane helped me a lot. She’s been my friend for a long time, from my first days in politics, actually. For over 50 years, your company has manufactured high-quality, stainless-steel tank trailers stamped with those beautiful words ‘Made in America.’ More people should do that and say that. Companies like theirs not only create American jobs, but restore American communities, build up our industrial base, and make our entire nation very proud.

“Congratulations on your grand opening, and to Diane, my special friend, God bless you, and God Bless America.”

The occasion drew more than 200 people, including suppliers, dealers, and fleet customers, to Beloit to celebrate the opening of STE’s highly automated 400,000-sq.-ft. plant purpose-built for tanker production. And with forecasted storms staying away, they gathered expectantly outside the modern building—with its sleek lines and pristine façade—to witness Diane, Fox, and Johnson snip the ceremonial red ribbon while flanked by a trio of tank trucks. Then they filed inside for an eight-stop tour of the greenfield factory, which was temporarily idled to safely showcase its technologically advanced systems and flag-filled national pride.

STE President Chris Sipe deemed the event one of the most important in STE’s 59-year history, second only to the Hendricks family’s 2006 purchase of the company to save 60 local jobs. “This facility offers several major benefits, the first being jobs. Over the next five years, we’ll add over 250 top wage-earning jobs,” Sipe predicted in his opening remarks. “The second is the advancement in the safety and quality of our products. We say internally we have an unmistakable commitment to precision. The state-of-the-art technology

being deployed in this facility gives us the ability to build the safest, strongest, and highest-quality tank trailers available anywhere.

“This facility also represents the largest investment in the tank trailer manufacturing industry in history. I personally want to thank the Hendricks family for their investment and unwavering dedication to the tank trailer industry.”

The opening ceremony also included comments from Kari Swirth, Greater Beloit Chamber of Commerce executive director; Derek Nilsen, STE director of sales and marketing, who coordinated the massive event; and Ryan Streblow, president and CEO of National Tank Truck Carriers, who thanked STE and Hendricks Holding for its visible and valued commitment to a vital industry. “For the tank truck industry, this facility means progress,” Streblow declared. “Tank trailers are the backbone of how essential goods, chemicals, food products, and fuel are safely and

reliably moved across our nation every day. With this advanced facility, STE is taking design, safety, and efficiency to a whole new level. The technologies integrated here are set to deliver higher-quality trailers with greater durability, improved safety features, and sustainable production methods that reduce waste and emissions.

“Simply put, this new facility sets a new benchmark for the industry, reaffirming STE’s position in building the future of bulk transportation.”

Officially ‘amazing’

Trump wasn’t the only government official to express his excitement on this historic occasion. U.S. Reps. Derrick Van Orden and Tony Wied, both Republican members of the House Committee on Agriculture, and Devin LeMahieu, the majority leader of the Wisconsin Senate, also spoke during the post-tour luncheon; and joined Diane, Fox, Streblow, and Samuel Popa, American Aluminum Extrusion owner and president, for a visit guided by Sipe.

Johnson, who spent 30 years in manufacturing before entering politics, expressed his appreciation for the Hendricks family’s steadfast devotion to boosting the local and state economies. “This is a first-class manufacturing facility,” Johnson told Bulk Transporter “Because of that, the specifications on these tanks are tighter than any competitor can maintain, which means safer products on the road. That’s a great thing right there. But also, because of what they’ve done with the technology, they can compete with Mexican labor. And my guess is, with the combination of being able to compete on the labor, and the quality of its products—with those tighter specifications—this business is probably going to take off.”

Van Orden, also a military veteran and actor, thanked Hendricks Holding and STE for celebrating “people who work with their hands” and keeping America’s food supply moving. “Without your work … agriculture would stop, because it doesn’t matter how much milk you produce in a barn, if you can’t get it in a trailer, you’re not going to have cheese, and I truly love cheese,” he quipped. “So, without our transportation industry, and our ag industry, America would stop. And any country that is dependent on another nation for its food is in an inherently bad place.”

Wied, who previously owned a chain of convenience stores, marveled at the facility’s engineering and manufacturing excellence, and Hendricks Holding’s passion for advancing American interests. “It’s so important that we have family businesses here in our country,” he said. “It’s important for our economy, and for our national security, and this is an incredible example of a family business that continues to prosper. And then you look at proudly ‘Made in America’ displayed everywhere within this factory. That is so amazing and so critical.”

Streblow—who was joined by NTTC Chairman David Price, United Petroleum Transports executive vice chairman—agreed, crediting STE for advancing tanker safety during a stop

Initially rumored to be attending STE’s grandopening celebration, President Trump instead recorded a video message for the 200-plus people present, including Hendricks Holding Chairman Diane Hendricks.

“Today, we stand at an exciting moment, not just for STE but for the tank truck industry, for your community, and for the future of transportation,” Ryan Streblow, NTTC president and CEO, told the crowd gathered for STE’s grand-opening celebration.

in STE’s service center. “This is one of the most critical components any OEM can bring forth to our industry—repairs being done here, and staying out of a court of law,” he said. “With the risk of liability our carriers go through when having to do repairs or spec a piece of equipment, they get scrutinized very quickly. And we’ve seen that in some of these frivolous nuclear verdicts.

“Having a facility of this nature step up, along with other OEMs, to take on repairs with pride, instead of pawning them off on the side, not only elevates STE, but … our carriers and our industry.”

A one-hour tour

Attendees walked the expansive factory floor during an eight-station exhibition of the facility, which began production in January and is expected to gradually ramp up operations over the next few years.

The first stop spotlighted STE’s ring-making machine and a hydroforming press that shapes tanker end caps

with 1,500 tons of pressure, increasing throughput and accuracy. Previously, one person made about eight heads per day, Sipe shared. Now, robot-aided lines turn out caps in 6 minutes. “This facility was designed to take what I call the old ‘arts-and-crafts’ or ‘iron-hammer’ method and add automation and precision to it,” Sipe explained.

The second displayed STE’s up-front barrel processing capabilities. Using advanced automation, STE takes stainless-steel coils primarily sourced domestically and flattens, straightens, cuts, and rounds them into “cans” that are welded and polished in a fraction of the traditional time before moving into the final stages of construction. STE currently boasts the capacity to turn out 2,400 tankers—at an average length of 44 ft.—per year on two shifts, Sipe said. Stations 3 and 4 demonstrated the precision of STE’s bending and welding robot cells in decelerated and shadow modes. Station 3 also featured two manual press brakes—a small one for small parts, and a larger bending

backup; and Station 4 included a 6,250gallon milk tanker and a hydrostatic system connected to a 60,000-gallon in-floor tank filled with filtered water for leak testing.

The fifth tour stop sent guests outside to view the facility’s vast trailer staging area; towering U.S. flagpole—which, at 132 ft., is the second tallest in Wisconsin (Acuity’s flag in Sheboygan waves 400 ft. in the air)—and a 9,500-gallon, fouraxle food-grade trailer belonging to one of the country’s largest dairy haulers. STE’s concrete lot boasts enough space for 192 new trailers and 60 service trailers, Sipe said. Then they headed back inside for Stage 6, a look at the company’s 13-bay maintenance and repair shop that services all tanker makes. “The advantage of taking your trailer to an OEM is that we always fix it correctly,” Sipe maintained.

“Why? It’s a huge liability for us. We’re considered an expert in a court of law, so we always fix things correctly.”

The circuit ended with examinations of STE’s loading and unloading, and frame-welding machines in Station 7; and finishing space in Station 8, where workers affix fenders, lights, reflective tape, and more. Sipe also proudly highlighted the facility’s in-house welding school. The ASME-accredited builder partners with Blackhawk Technical College to train and develop technicians,

driving value for customers and setting standards that are “second to none.”

“I love what I do, and I know Brent supports and feels the same way,” Diane concluded. “You see it in the communities we live in, the businesses around here, and the opportunities that drive us to buy new real estate and invest in companies—and we’ve got a great company here.” BT

Drive, fight, win

NTTC urges members to remain resolved amid uncertainty during 80th-anniversary gathering in Kansas City By

KANSAS CITY, Missouri—Be smart. Stay safe. Prepare for what comes next.

That was the message from Ryan Streblow, president and CEO of National Tank Truck Carriers, to the 1,041 members and first-time attendees at 2025 Tank Truck Week in Kansas City, Missouri, where industry stakeholders gathered to celebrate the association’s past, and gear up for an uncertain future marked by market malaise, and economic and regulatory turmoil.

“We’re celebrating 80 years and we’re looking forward to another 80 years of this great organization working for you,” Streblow said on the main stage inside the Kansas City Convention Center. “This industry has reinvented itself before—deregulation, fuel shocks, the

shift in intermodal freight—and every time that has happened we’ve come out stronger.

“So, let’s treat the next few years the same way. Be pragmatic about your costs, be bold about efficiencies, and unite in advocacy on the issues that are impacting your businesses. If you do that, you won’t just survive, you will thrive, you will win business—and you will grow.”

Streblow delivered his remarks Oct. 7, a week into the government shutdown that stretched into November—when this issue of Bulk Transporter magazine went to press—underscoring the difficulty of operating in the current environment. But NTTC’s CEO assured current and prospective for-hire carrier, private-fleet, and supplier members the association will not cease its efforts to

improve the tank truck industry’s position on any front—from environmental policy and tariff-related equipment issues to desperately needed tort reform.

“We’ve got frivolous lawsuits that, apparently, in the past few years, have no boundaries, and that arm continues to extend,” Streblow said. “But your association this year committed $25,000 to American Trucking Associations’ litigation center to help address tort reform, and that’s just this year’s component. Over the last eight years, we’ve committed $200,000 from all of you. Those funds go right to states like Florida, Iowa, and Texas that are battling this problem.

“That is putting your money where it’s needed the most.”

Streblow also credited the association leaders who preceded him, including Austin Sutherland, Cliff Harvison, Dan

Furth, and John Conley—who served as Bulk Transporter’s third editor and was in attendance for the 80th anniversary event—for putting NTTC in a persuasive position. “They laid the groundwork for us to attack these issues,” he said. “You have a recognized name on Capitol Hill. You have a direct line to PHMSA and FMCSA administrators, and a direct resource in National Tank to reach those career folks. That’s powerful.”

Lighting the way

NTTC also is working on securing an extension of its FMCSA pulsating brake lamp exemption that’s helping bulk haulers reduce rear-end collisions, especially at railroad-grade crossings. And Groendyke Transport, which won the first exemption with assistance from Peterson Manufacturing, is still aiming to advance the technology with new capabilities.

“It’s ridiculous that [the FMCSA regulation requiring hazmat carriers to stop at railroad tracks] is still on the books,” said Greg Hodgen, Groendyke CEO and newly crowned ATA chairman (see page 29). “It probably causes more accidents than it prevents because people on the open road can’t tell how fast they’re closing in on that vehicle, and if a truck is accelerating away from the tracks, the driver is no longer on their brakes. The hazard lights might be on, but they could still be going slower than the posted speed limit. So, I believe the brake lamps should be speed-controlled using a GPS device—and hopefully Peterson can help us with that.

“If we can control the pulsing until we’re up to road speed, people will know they need to pay attention.”

Peterson supplied the auxiliary amber brake lamps Groendyke used to secure its exemption in 2019. Now it’s working with the carrier to pilot the PetersonPulse smart trailer system, which technicians were installing on a Groendyke tanker

when Bulk Transporter visited as part of an open house coinciding with Tank Truck Week (visit bulktransporter.com for more on that story). Groendyke plans to use the system to monitor and control vital trailer systems in real time, including lights, brakes, tire pressure— and even the valves that actuate fuel delivery.

“I’m excited to see what they figure out with the valving system,” said Joseph Richley, Groendyke vice president of maintenance. “Trailer light monitoring is cool. Tire pressure monitoring has been around a long time. That’s very useful, very cool. And airline monitoring for brakes is obviously very useful. But, bulk tank-specific, I asked them if they could let us know if we have an issue with the airlines that power our valving system, and that’s what has me most excited. I’m really looking forward to seeing what Peterson can do with that.”

Kraft, Drov offer smart solution Fleets now can add Drōv Technologies’ AirBoxOne smart-trailer system to any manufacturer’s tank trailer through a new aftermarket agreement with Kraft Tank that allows operators to upgrade existing equipment with intelligent technology that reduces downtime, optimizes fuel efficiency, and enhances operational safety. The partners debuted their collaboration and demonstrated the system’s many benefits during Tank Truck Week.

“This partnership marks an exciting new chapter in aftermarket innovation for the tank trailer sector,” Drōv CEO Lisa Mullen said. “By combining Drōv’s advanced sensor-driven solutions with Kraft’s unmatched installation and servicing capabilities, we’re enabling fleets to unlock unprecedented operational insights and reliability.”

EnTrans International, the parent company of Heil Trailer, Polar Tank, and other tanker brands, remains the

exclusive provider of the factory-integrated TankAi platform powered by Drōv’s AirBoxOne, a cloud-enabled control box with multiple wireless connections that unites smart components, including trailer cameras, weight sensors, and automatic tire-pressure regulators. But as Drōv’s preferred partner, Kraft now will be able to install, repair, and maintain AirBoxOne-enabled ecosystems in any fleet’s newly purchased, used, or leased tank trailers.

“Kraft can bring these fleets in and

monitor their trailer systems,” Bob Davis, Drōv vice president of business enterprise, told Bulk Transporter. “They have the facilities and the capabilities to diagnose various issues. And it might not be an AirBoxOne issue. It could be an ABS sensor. Well, they understand that, and they can fix it before any major problems occur.”

Drōv first introduced its solution to tank fleets on a United Petroleum Transports trailer at 2021 Tank Truck Week in Dallas. Four years later, the

Oklahoma City-based company still is adding and testing innovative new features such as dry bulk pressure sensors and multi-axle tire monitoring.

“We’ve had great feedback from fleets who’ve already equipped the AirBoxOne, and we have a lot of people asking for it—so they can truly monitor the entire trailer,” said Jeremy Capra, Kraft parts director. “There is nobody else out there who can deliver that ability to this level.”

Thermex delivers in-transit heat

First-time exhibitor Thermex, a Canadian equipment manufacturer, introduced its TundraTherm in-transit tank trailer and container heating system during Tank Truck Week. The plug-and-play, diesel-powered unit can maintain and increase cargo temperatures, ensuring products stay warm without contaminating the truck’s coolant system or activating DPF regeneration.

The 49,500-BTU TundraTherm features a high-flow, 12-volt circulating

pump that is protected by a weather-resistant enclosure. Options include a tank-mounted temperature controller, remote switch, and dual-voltage converter that connects to 120-volt shore power.

“Every fleet manager knows the cost of keeping cargo warm in freezing

weather: wasted fuel, overnight idling, and equipment wear,” said Roger Arnot, Thermex product manager. “The TundraTherm in-transit heater from Thermex Engineered Systems changes that equation—providing reliable, standalone heat that keeps your tankers hot and your operation efficient.” BT

Ready to work

Groendyke Transport CEO takes on ATA chairmanship

American Trucking Association’s board of directors elected Groendyke Transport CEO Greg Hodgen as the national federation’s 81st chairman during ATA’s 2025 Management Conference and Exhibition in San Diego.

Greg Hodgen is ready to go to work—for the tank truck industry, and all of trucking.

American Trucking Associations officially recognized the chief executive officer of Groendyke Transport as its 81st chairman Oct. 28 at ATA’s 2025 Management Conference and Exhibition in San Diego, and after months of attending state meetings, he’s ready to deliver his message, starting with the importance of coming together—on the highway and on the Hill.

“Despite the political divide today, trucking is a bipartisan business,” Hodgen told Bulk Transporter. “Freight is bipartisan by nature. Everybody needs it, and we’re going to haul it. Other modes of transportation can’t take essential goods to a hospital or grocery store so, at some point, it’s going to be on a truck. Roads and bridges and freight are not political animals. They’re a necessary part of life, and we live well in this country because of what trucking provides.

“I want to make sure people hear and understand that.”

Hodgen is the second tank truck industry leader to take on the federation’s chairmanship in the last five years, following J&M Tank Lines CEO Harold Sumerford Jr. in 2021, and he likely won’t be the last this decade. ATA’s board of directors also elected Ventura Transfer Company Chairman and CEO Randy Clifford as second vice chairman, placing him in line to lead the association. All three previously served as National Tank Truck Carriers chairmen.

“Over the past several decades, Greg has built a highly successful career at Groendyke and has been instrumental in growing the company into one of the nation’s largest tank truck carriers,” Chris Spear, ATA president and CEO, said in a news release. “Along the way, he has lent his time, talent, and expertise to ATA, and our federation is stronger because of his invaluable insights and inspiring leadership. ATA is fortunate to be able to add Greg to our distinguished

list of accomplished chairmen, and I look forward to working with him on tackling a wide range of issues facing our industry, particularly the scourge of lawsuit abuse.”

And tort reform is another topic Hodgen is eager to address. “When an accident occurs and someone is hurt, they deserve to be taken care of. They deserve justice,” Hodgen acknowledged. “But today’s system isn’t about justice. It’s about enriching trial lawyers.

“The trucking businesses I’ve seen and been a part of—certainly at Groendyke—want to take care of people when they’re hurt, and we train like hell, over and over again, to ensure we have the safest drivers on the road. We also have the safest trucks we’ve ever had. We put safety technology all over them. But all that is swept away in this legal environment where plaintiff’s lawyers want to make every trucking company the bad guy, and that’s easy to do, but it’s not right—and I don’t like things that aren’t right. I want a fair system, not a jackpot system. And today it’s a jackpot.”

Hodgen succeeds Dennis Dellinger, president and CEO of Cargo Transporters, as chairman. ATA also elected Sumerford as treasurer, and Derek Leathers, chairman and CEO of Werner Enterprises, as first vice chair.

“Greg has made countless contributions to our industry and our association, and he has earned his place as ATA chairman,” Dellinger said. “This unique position has the ability to shape the future of trucking, and with the growing number of challenges we face, steady, experienced leadership is needed now more than ever. With Greg at the helm, ATA will continue to prove its value proposition for our members and remain a strong voice for the millions of Americans our industry employs.”

That work begins now.

“We at Groendyke are incredibly proud to see Greg ascend to the ATA chairmanship,” said Joe Morrissey, Groendyke president. “We are very happy to share Greg with the larger industry as he is a passionate, visionary champion for all of trucking.” BT
