SPreparing for the busy season

As summer repair volume increases, technicians and shop owners are looking for tools, equipment, and training that help improve efficiency, accuracy, and productivity in the bay.

ummer tends to bring a different kind of pace into the shop.

Repair volume picks up, bays get hotter, schedules get tighter, and technicians are expected to move faster without sacrificing accuracy. For many shops, it becomes one of the busiest stretches of the year, especially as customers prepare vehicles for road trips, fleet demands increase, and everyday maintenance work continues rolling in.

At the same time, the challenges facing technicians are continuing to evolve. Modern vehicles are becoming more software-driven, diagnostic workflows are becoming more layered, and procedures that once seemed straightforward now require additional verification, calibration, or specialized tooling. The pressure to stay efficient while keeping up with changing vehicle technology has never really slowed down. If anything, it continues accelerating.

That’s why preparation matters so much heading into the summer months.

For technicians, that preparation can mean reassessing shop workflow, updating diagnostic equipment, improving organization, or investing in tools that

reduce unnecessary downtime. Even small improvements in efficiency can have a major impact during busy periods. Saving a few minutes on a repair process may not seem significant in the moment, but across multiple jobs each day, those time savings add up quickly.

It’s also a reminder of how important training and education have become across the industry. Vehicle systems continue advancing rapidly, particularly in areas like diagnostics, ADAS, software integration, and electrical repair. Technicians who stay curious, continue learning, and remain adaptable are often the ones best positioned for long-term success. More importantly, they become valuable resources within their shops as repair complexity increases.

Another trend becoming increasingly clear is the growing focus on versatility. Shops are looking for products that do more than just complete a single task. Whether it’s diagnostic platforms capable of broader coverage, storage solutions that improve workflow, or tools designed to handle multiple applications, efficiency-driven purchasing decisions continue shaping the market.

As the busy season gets underway, we hope this issue offers useful insight, practical ideas, and products worth considering as shops continue navigating another demanding summer in the bay.

Tesla diagnostics — Next level vehicle access

A comprehensive guide to Tesla’s diagnostic environment, focusing on Toolbox functionalities, remote access protocols, and data analysis techniques.

In context, Tesla is a relatively new car company, and their diagnostic approach is quite different than other manufacturers. However, some of the vehicle technology closely mirrors that of some other vehicle manufacturers you may be familiar with. In fact, Mercedes-Benz made significant investments in Tesla in its early years. If you’ve ever been in an early Model S, you’ll quickly recognize the driver’s master power window switch-pack and shift lever. Most of the vehicle systems use CAN, but most of the diagnostic communications use DoIP.

When you’re using Toolbox (Tesla’s diagnostic application), you will encounter a few terms that may seem odd if you happen to be one that never followed Greek or Norse mythology. Odin is Tesla’s Diagnostic API (application programming interface). The relationship with Odin and Norse mythology is that Odin is the chief god

associated with wisdom, war, poetry, magic, and secret knowledge.

During remote vehicle access, you’ll encounter a reference to Hermes, which is what Tesla refers to as a lightweight service data transport mechanism. Hermes is the Greek Olympian god who serves as the herald/messenger of the gods. He is the swift, boundary-crossing deity who travels freely between the mortal world, the divine realm, and the underworld. He’s the patron of communication, travelers, commerce, trickery, and messengers and intermediaries.

I wrote an article about Tesla Diagnostics around 3-years ago, and a lot has changed since then. I can confidently report that it has evolved nicely for the aftermarket.

Covered in that article was how to go about subscribing to Tesla’s Toolbox application. Back then, the annual cost was $3,000 US, and today, it’s $700 annually and $75 for a 24-hour sub. Today, a Toolbox application also pro-

vides you with access to the Theory of Operation for the various vehicle models, and most recently, they have added more video content. Also covered in that article was the cost of the service and repair information, which is now free to all. You may have also noticed that your favorite aftermarket service information provider may have added Tesla SI to the mix. However, one of the more powerful features of Tesla’s wiring diagrams is the direct connection to their Connector Reference Database, which contains location information along with connector supplier part numbers for the housings, terminals, seals, and more. What does this mean? Well, for one, you can head on over to Mouser, Digikey, or other suppliers and purchase what you need instead of going through Tesla (Figure 1).

When it comes to the diagnostic process, in most cases, you can enter service mode from the touchscreen, and then check for active alerts and their data payload to quickly obtain perspective (Figure 2). From there, you may be able to pull up additional diagnostic panels on the touchscreen without the use of any special tools. However, with Toolbox, one has access to additional service tools. One of the advanced tools is remote vehicle access.

REMOTE VEHICLE ACCESS

Here is what Tesla has to say about remote access regarding owner authorization requests:

An owner can authorize an independent repair workshop or Tesla technician to access more service information and actions for up to one week. Authorization requests are sent to the owner’s email as needed, and authorization can be revoked at any time. For example, an owner can authorize access shortly before an appointment or while the vehicle is at an independent repair workshop. From a repairer’s perspective, the process to request access to vehicle data is:

• A vehicle needs service, and the owner provides the VIN and their Tesla-registered email address before bringing their vehicle to the workshop

• The technician submits an access request via Toolbox

From a vehicle owner’s perspective, the process to authorize access to their vehicle data is:

• The owner needs the vehicle serviced and provides the VIN and email before bringing their vehicle to the workshop

• Owner receives an email from noreply-toolbox@teslamotors.com asking them to click a link to approve the use of diagnostic tools on their vehicle for a specific period

Once the owner authorization request is approved by the owner, the following information and tools are remotely available to the repairer from within Toolbox:

• Garage - used to view live signal and alert information

• Remote Repair Commands - used to execute vehicle commands with remote principles

• CAN Explorer - used to retrieve and view signals and alerts previously set on the vehicle

The workflow I recommend after obtaining remote access is to visit the

p Figure 4 — AutoDiag log availability
p Figure 5 — Log pull option - AutoDiag
p Figure 6 — AutoDiag report

Garage page as indicated above. Then visit the CAN Explorer page and pull the data logs from the period where the client has reported trouble. From there, the service alerts panel can be accessed, and the payload data from those alerts can be loaded up in the viewer for more context. However, if you know what systems are involved, you can access the Actions section, activate a live vehicle connection, and then run the Autodiag tool related to the suspect system. Now, if you forgot to pull logs, the Actions panel will provide you with the option to perform the log pull and subsequently run the Autodiag program. Beware, Autodiag may not always be conclusive and could be incorrect. It is up to the diagnostician to use his or her skills to arrive at a proper diagnosis.

Here is an example:

Step 1: Connect to vehicle (either remote or local) (Figure 3)

Step 2: Select Actions

Step 3: Select the system for Autodiag

Step 4 : Set start and stop times and verify log availability (Figure 4)

Step 5: Select option Pull Logs and Run or Run with X% of Data (Figure 5)

Step 6 : Wait for results and review (Figure 6)

With Toolbox, the service technician has access to many service tools, and when connecting to the vehicle locally, Service Mode Plus can be activated. However, you can also trigger Service Mode Plus remotely, which may come in handy if you’re working with another shop remotely who doesn’t have a Toolbox subscription. Once the vehicle is placed into regular Service Mode and authorization has been obtained from the vehicle owner, access the vehicle via Toolbox and make a remote connection. Once connected, go to Actions and search for Service Mode . You should see Service Mode Plus Authentication . Select it and run (Figure 7).

SIGNALS

The CAN Viewer can be used to review not only data from the past, but live data as well (Figure 8).

Once you’re in Service Mode Plus, you can view live data on the vehicle display as well (Figure 9).

DATA RESEARCH — ARTICLES

During analysis, you may come across articles that may help you uncover additional evidence to help support your diagnosis. Figure 10 demonstrates this. Here, the system found potential alerts along with payload data that may prove

Clicking on the “View plots for the selected range” will result in the data as shown in Figure 11.

In some cases, you may be presented with a list of alerts and warnings that may be overwhelming. Tesla has an organizational tool to assist with this called Sandbox. You can think of Sandbox as a place to gather documents and see how they relate. When you load up documents, you’ll see them arranged from left to right with symptoms, causes, and corrections, making it easier to parse through the information in a timely manner (Figure 12).

When it comes down to circuit testing, high voltage (HV) system checks, network diagnostics, and others, you can typically use the same tools you use on other vehicles. Safety is always job one, and Tesla’s SI will point that out at the beginning of the procedure. They will also list the HV training requirements and/or the aftermarket equivalencies. As mentioned in the beginning, with a Toolbox subscription, one has access to the Theory of Operation, which contains tons of great information. Additionally, the video section offers short training videos with subjects covering Picoscope, DVOM use, and more.

TERMINAL MODE — SERVICE SHELL

One last area I’d like to mention is the Service Shell area. You can think of Service Shell as Terminal Mode, where you can trigger routines via a command line. If you type “help,” you’ll be presented with a list of supported commands and their meaning. One that I find myself often using is the “ldvs” command, which provides a list of the current data values from just about everywhere on the vehicle. You can think of it as a massive data dump. What I like to do is save that text in a text document and then use

The following is a short summary from an AI conversation I had about an ldvs dump:

Summary — Battery health verdict

Current estimated health — ~81–83 percent of original nominal capacity remaining (~17–19 percent degradation).

Still very usable — Plenty of life left, especially since you’re above the 70 percent warranty floor.

Normal for the age/mileage — A 2018 100D with over 216k miles showing this level of degradation is not alarming; many similar cars are in the 78–85 percent range at this point.

Recommendation — Schedule service for the smart fuse* replacement soon (Tesla often replaces it proactively when this code appears). If you want the most accurate health picture, ask Tesla Service to run a full Battery Health Test (it can take 8–12+ hours and gives a precise percentage of original capacity).

*The comment referring to the smart fuse came from errors listed in the data dump elsewhere.

CONCLUSION

I think most will agree that Tesla’s approach to diagnostics can be very fruitful for service technicians tasked with service, maintenance, and repair. While some manufacturers today offer remote vehicle access and access to cloud vehicle data, this is typically restricted to

the OEM dealerships. If you’re looking to get more involved with Tesla vehicles, I recommend a Toolbox subscription and gaining access to a vehicle to explore on. This is the path I took to learn, and I’m enjoying gaining knowledge on these machines every day!

Modern battery diagnostics require modern tools

Today’s batteries are complex and in order to properly test and diagnose these systems, technicians need the proper tools.

There are more tools available today for battery and charging system diagnostics than ever before. From battery conductance testers and current clamps to thermal imagers and battery support units, each tool has a place in the diagnostic process. Understanding what these tools do, where they excel, and where they fall short is critical to making accurate diagnostic decisions.

Regardless of the level of testing or the inspection process you’re performing, testing the battery and charging system on every vehicle should never be overlooked. The battery and charging system are integral to every system on the vehicle. A weak battery, unstable charging system, or voltage-related concern can create symptoms that appear completely unrelated to the actual fault.

BATTERY TESTING CANNOT BE OVERLOOKED

One of the primary tools used in our shop is a Snap-on EECS800 battery

tester (Figure 1). Modern battery testers provide much more information than simply a pass or fail result. They allow technicians to evaluate battery condition, available cranking capacity, charging system performance, and overall battery health. These tools provide a fast and effective starting point for evaluating the electrical system and should be part of every inspection process.

Current measurement is another critical part of battery and charging system diagnostics. The Pico Technology Picoscope 4425 current clamps and PicoScope Diagnostic Suite provide the ability to measure and visualize current flow in ways that conventional test equipment cannot. Whether diagnosing a battery draw concern, evaluating charging system performance, or monitoring current consumption over time, having the ability to see what is happening within the electrical system can significantly reduce diagnostic inspection time (Figure 2).

THE VALUE OF THERMAL IMAGING

We’ve had a few vehicles come in for battery draw concerns where we were unable to find any instance of the vehicle actually having a measurable draw. The battery would be tested using conventional testing methods, and current draw testing would show no abnormal current consumption. Despite the customers’ concerns and repeated battery failures or dead batteries, with nothing outside the battery appeared to be responsible for the discharge.

The issue was ultimately found to be an internal short between cells in the battery. What made these cases particularly interesting was that the fault was really only noticeable using thermal imaging.

In the picture shown (Figure 3), one of the only indications of the fault was a heat pattern visible across the top of the battery. Without physically cutting the battery open, our suspicion was that there was a short across the internal strapping components connecting the battery cells together. In other instances, we’ve seen similar failures where the

 Figure 1 — Battery testers like the Snap-on EECS800 should be part of every inspection process.
 Figure 2 — Pico Technology's PicoScope Diagnostic Suite allows technicians to "see" what is happening within the electrical system. For example, this screenshot shows excessive ripple on a battery test.

short was only noticeable from the side of the battery when viewed with a thermal imager.

Although these instances are very rare, they demonstrate why thermal imaging can be an extremely helpful tool to have available. Thermal imaging is not limited to battery diagnostics. It can be useful for identifying high-resistance connections, charging system concerns, overheated electrical components, poor connections, and a variety of other electrical and mechanical issues.

The image shown was captured using a FLIR ONE cellphone adapter. Tools like this have made thermal imaging much more accessible than it was just a few years ago. Being able to quickly connect a thermal camera to a cellphone allows technicians to investigate electrical concerns quickly without investing in a large dedicated thermal imaging platform.

That being said, our thermal imager of choice is the TOPDON TC003 (Figure 4). One of the reasons we prefer this unit is that it houses the entire processing unit and camera in a single Android-based tool. Having everything integrated into one device makes it convenient to use in a shop environment, and because it is a dedicated unit, it is always available when needed.

MAINTAINING THESE TOOLS

No matter what testing equipment you choose to use, it is important to understand that the tools themselves require maintenance and periodic evaluation. Battery testers, current clamps, charging system analyzers, thermal imagers, and support equipment are among the most heavily used tools in most repair facilities. They are also some of the first tools to begin producing inaccurate results due to mishandling, misuse, misunderstanding, or normal wear and tear (Figure 5).

 Figure 3 — Using the FLIR ONE cellphone adapter, we saw that the only indication of the fault was a heat pattern visible across the top of the battery.
 Figure 4 — The TOPDON TC003  houses the entire processing system and camera in one Android-based platform.
 Figure 5 — Support units like Clore Automotive's PRO-LOGIX Battery Charger are part of the foundation of nearly every diagnostic process performed on a vehicle, so it's important to keep this well-maintained.

Damaged cables, worn clamps, contaminated terminals, loose connectors, and deteriorated test leads can all affect the accuracy of the information being gathered. As technicians, we often focus on the condition of the vehicle while overlooking the condition of the tools we use to evaluate it.

REFERENCE THE SERVICE INFORMATION

At this point, it should be noted that we’re still only talking about conventional 12V batteries installed in vehicles today. We haven’t even touched on testing secondary batteries found in start-stop vehicles, lithium battery systems that are becoming increasingly common, or the other battery variants currently on the market.

Many of the newer lithium battery systems are housed in cases that look

p Figure 6 — Every technician should have battery support equipment on hand to maintain a stable voltage and more. Product pictured: PowerMax PMBC Series Charger and Power Supply

very similar to traditional flooded lead-acid batteries. Without consulting service information, it can be difficult to determine exactly what type of battery is installed in the vehicle. Because testing methods, charging procedures, and specifications vary between battery types, keeping track of the systems you’re working on is vitally important.

That is why factory service information should always be referenced for testing methods, specifications, and expected test results. No matter how good the testing equipment is, applying the wrong testing procedure can still lead to an incorrect diagnosis.

UTILIZING THE PROPER SUPPORT TOOLS

Even beyond testing these systems, one of the most important parts of the repair process is maintaining stable battery voltage. Whether you’re performing a programming event, advanced diagnostics, module configuration, or even something as simple as a brake service, stable battery voltage is critical.

Battery support tools are no longer optional equipment in a modern repair facility. They have become a necessity.

In our shop, we utilize several different battery support options depending on the application. One of those options is a Prologix PL6100 Clore Automotive battery support unit, which provides a stable voltage source during service procedures. We also utilize the PowerMax PMBC Series units as our primary battery support equipment (Figure 6).

The PowerMax PMBC series is capable of functioning as a two-stage or three-stage charger, supports lithium battery applications, and includes a dedicated power supply mode for programming events and any other situation where maintaining stable battery voltage is important.

Modern vehicles place greater demands on battery support equipment than ever before. Cooling fans, electric

pumps, module wake-up events, network communication, and other electrical loads can create substantial changes in current demand during service procedures. A quality battery support unit must be capable of maintaining voltage stability throughout those changes.

CONCLUSION

As vehicle technology continues to evolve, the tools available for battery and charging system diagnostics continue to evolve as well. Battery testers, current clamps, thermal imagers, battery support units, and service information all play an important role in the diagnostic process. No single tool provides every answer. Instead, each tool contributes a piece of the overall picture.

The examples discussed here serve as a reminder that sometimes the

answer is not found by using a different diagnostic process, but by looking at the problem with a different tool (Figure 7). Whether it is a battery tester, a current clamp, a thermal imager, or a battery support unit, understanding the capabilities of the tools available to you is just as important as understanding the vehicle you’re working on.

Pico Technology TA511 PicoBNC+ 1400V Differential Probe Kit

Q&A with Justin Morgan, automotive technical specialist at Pico Technology.

Q: What makes this product innovative?

A: The TA511 is the first of its kind being a 1,400V differential probe that is fully automated for voltage range selection. This means there are no switches or adjustments on the probe. The user simply connects the probe to the scope via BNC+ and chooses the range in the software just like any other voltage measurement.

Q: What was the inspiration behind creating this product?

A: Prior to the TA511, Pico didn’t offer a purpose built differential probe for automotive use. Users had to previously adapt to using the TA041 and TA057 from the test & measurment side.

Q: How will this product improve the lives of technicians and shop owners?

A: This product allows 4225A and 4425A users to have a true differential measurement that can be used from 5V to 1,400V on signals up to 20Mhz. Technicians can use the TA511 to capture differential signals on everything from CAN bus and other high speed networks (such as Flexray and CAN FD) all the way up to HEV 1,400V signals safely and easily.

Q: Anything else our readers should know?

A: Another great feature of the TA511 is that it requires no batteries or external power supply. The probe is powered directly off the 4225A or 4425A using BNC+ technology.

The TA511 PicoBNC+ 1400V Differential Probe Kit from Pico Technology o ers all of the PicoBNC+ benefits to high-voltage measurements, including probe recognition and elimination of manual switching and batteries. Technicians can use up to three probes simultaneously with the PicoScope 4425A Automotive scope while still meeting all safety requirements. The TA511 is rated to 1,000V CAT III and equally e ective at handling high-voltage signals for EV and hybrid systems as it is handling low-voltage di erential signals, such as 5V communications. attempting to extract a screw; however, these pliers have worked very well to do so and, in my opinion, have earned the title “screw extractor.”

Q: How has using this tool impacted your shop’s profitability?

A: Broken screw/bolts can often tear apart an automotive technician’s day. These pliers are a new contender in my arsenal of “bad day tools.”

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: Very easy. These are standardsized, smaller (approx. 6” long) pliers that will easily fit into many locations.

Q: What features did you like?

A: These pliers are Japanese-made and feel like a superior, high-quality tool. The hardness of the steel is excellent, and I can see these pliers maintaining sharp, strong teeth for years to come.

Q: Are there any ways you could think of to improve or add to this tool?

A: More sizes! I want to purchase an assortment of these pliers to have various options in reach and angles. Also, the handle is a multi-layer design, and in my experience, I can see the layers delaminating over time with use. Other tools I own with

multiple-layer construction have separated over time.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: Pliers are probably one of the most versatile tools a technician can use. I used these pliers for screw extraction due to their title, hose clamp removal, fuse pulling, etc.

Q: How does this tool compare to other tools you’ve used like it?

A: I have well over 100 pairs of pliers in my toolbox, so yes, I have used many types/brands of pliers with similar designs. These pliers outperform a lot of them and have a much lower price point than the majority.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: An eight. I’d like to see an improvement to the handle design and more choices of pliers. While researching this company, I was disappointed to see a limited selection of available pliers because I wanted to buy more!

Redline Detection Smoke Pro Total Tech

Reviewed

by

Randy Kaiser, service manager at Rost Motor, Inc. in Manson, Iowa.

Q: How did the tool/equipment function as far as saving you time?

A: Check engine lights and drivability concerns are some of a technician’s most common issues. EVAP leaks are quite often the cause of check engine lights, and sometimes can cause drivability issues as well. Vacuum leaks can also cause both concerns. Diagnosing both of these issues requires trying to see an air leak, which is next to impossible. Being able to inject smoke under pressure into these systems saves a huge amount of time.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Redline Detection Smoke Pro Total Tech, No. 95-0050, is designed to quickly pinpoint intake, EVAP, exhaust, and general repair leaks. This tool uses pressure, vacuum, and visual vapor to quickly diagnose trouble codes to pinpoint EVAP leaks, cooling system leaks, intake and exhaust leaks, wind, and water oil leaks. This diagnostic leak machine can pinpoint leaks down to .010”. For more information, visit VehicleServicePros.com/55303945

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

Q: What kind of setup was involved before using the product?

A: There was very little setup involved after removing it from the shipping box. It comes with everything assembled and ready to go. The flashlight was even charged.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: It’s actually very easy to use. There is a Schrader valve removal tool and adaptor fitting for admitting smoke into the system. If your system doesn’t have a Schrader valve, there is an Easy Connect Kit included with quite a variety of adaptors. Add some smoke-producing liquid to the reservoir, and you have five minutes of run-time.

Q: Was there a manual included?

A: There is a manual included. It shows all of the parts that are included, as well as some accessories. It also has a section on troubleshooting.

Q: What features did you like?

A: The unit is very small and compact. I like that it came with such a variety of nice adaptors and plugs. The gauge is also very easy to read, and glows in lower light situations.

A: So far, I’ve mostly used the machine to diagnose leaks in EVAP systems, since that’s what I see the most of. I don’t see any reason that it wouldn’t work well for leak checking any closed system if you could properly inject the smoke.

Q: Have you used a previous version of this tool?

A: I have used a couple of different smoke machines in the past. Both worked just fine, but were much bigger to store between jobs.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: Probably a solid 8.5. The tool seems to be pretty well built. The adaptors and caps are of good quality. The lack of a protective case for the smoke machine is a concern. A runtime longer than five minutes would be helpful in difficult cases.

some of the menu functions to be a bit non-intuitive. However, product support has been extremely easy to get in touch with and very good at answering questions.

Q: How was its packaging? Did it come with any accessories?

A: It came in a giant carrying case, which holds every connector and adapter available with the tool. It has a docking station, multiple connectors (even stuff for heavy duty trucks), a Bluetooth dongle, a cabling connector, and a borescope.

Q: Was there a manual included?

A: The user’s manual is on board the tool. While brief, I did find out how to do some things that were otherwise pretty obscure.

Q: What features did you like?

A: The PID search function, though more common on the Android-based scan tools, is now almost a necessity, and I love it. It also allows (on some vehicles) the ability to look simultaneously at data from more than one module. It also has a dual-diagnostic feature, and, if you have a second dongle, it allows you to diagnose two vehicles simultaneously. Also, I like the fact that the dongle has its own screen.

Q: Is there any way you could think of to improve or add to this tool?

A: The reports generated on the tool

are very nice and professional-looking. They can be exported via email in multiple formats, but the recordings of data do not appear to be exportable as of now. Also, in spite of powerful data graphing capability in the data stream mode, the tool only displays numbers; it does not graph the results.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: I used the tool on multiple diagnostic jobs for vehicles with the MIL on. One of the first vehicles I used it on was a 2020 Ram 3500 with the 6.7 diesel and codes in modules that were not in the ECM. As the vehicle has a gateway module, I was pleased to see that after registering the Thinkcar serial number on my AutoAuth subscription tool list, the gateway module connection worked flawlessly.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: I give the tool a solid eight and would have given it higher if the tool had been somewhat more intuitive to use.

relay could then be removed from a circuit and installed in the appropriate slot on the tool for testing.

Q: How easy was it to use?

A: The tool is straightforward to use. There is a button for 4-pin / 5-pin selection, and a “test” button that initiates the switching of the relay.

Q: What features did you like?

A: The high/low battery voltage alarms are useful. If I forgot to keep the battery charged, I prefer that the tool warns me rather than proceeding with the test and providing an incorrect diagnosis of the relay. I also appreciated the long leads for working remotely from the battery.

Q: Was there a manual included?

A: A small pamphlet with brief instructions/warranty information was included. I used the manual to understand what the indicator lights represented.

Q: What types of jobs/repairs did you use this tool for?

A: I used this relay tester to check the operation of a 4-pin fog lamp relay. This was part of a new aftermarket fuse box being installed in a vehicle, and I wanted to confirm that there were no defective out-of-the-box parts.

A: I have not used any other relay tester previously, but I have used a multimeter in the past to check relays. This tool provides a second way of pinpointing a bad relay that could be used in conjunction with a multimeter (and in turn, prove a diagnosis).

Q: Is there any way you could think of to improve or add to this tool?

A: I think retractable power leads would be neat, but not a necessity.

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate this tool overall? Why?

A: I’d rate this tool a solid nine. This tool consistently does everything that is expected of it. It can definitely provide peace of mind when eliminating possible problem components to reach a diagnosis.

INNOVATION AWARD PROFILE: THEXTON MANUFACTURING TIRE WRENCH SUPPORT STAND

Q: What makes this product innovative?

A: This product came from a real-world shop problem — techs handling tire extensions by themselves or having to ask another person. So, this innovation isn't complex; it's just solving a common problem in a clean, straightforward way. If you look at a lot of our brand, they are simple tools that just get the job done. And that's kind of where the innovation for this one came. Let's just give the guys something that works, that doesn't have a bunch of bells and whistles. It's a stand that has different increments. They can align with different lug nuts when they are doing the job that they do.

Q: What was the inspiration behind creating this product?

A: We've seen different applications of how people do this. We saw one recently [where] someone was using a forklift to support the extension, [and] we've seen techs balance tools for help or fight leverage for years trying to do this job. This [tool] gives a stable support system

to get the job right and in a safe manner, and [techs] don’t have to worry about it slipping off or hurting themselves or having a buddy come over to try to hold that extension for them.

Q: How will this product improve the lives of technicians and shop owners?

A: In shops, time is money, right? So, time and manpower are always tight. They're always looking to get the jobs done quick and techs to be able to get those jobs done. This lets the tech do the job by himself and not have to go ask someone else to do it. So, he keeps that job moving forward and does not take someone else away from their current job.

WALKAWAY INFLATION SYSTEM RELEASES INFLATION CHUCK

Removing wheels is a routine part of servicing vehicles, whether for tire changes, brake jobs, suspension work, or drivetrain repairs. Over time, lug nuts take a beating from impact tools, road debris, and general wear, often becoming damaged, mangled, or swollen—especially on vehicles with chrome cap lugs. Here’s how to tackle them effectively.

Ease up on the torque! Over-tightening lugs with impact tools only worsen damage—precision matters. Inspect and clean lugs before removal. Dirt, mud, and debris can prevent a socket from fullY seating. Select the right socket. Ensure the size, depth, and outer diameter allow proper engagement without damaging the wheel. For swollen or misshaped lugs, use a half-size socket. Many modern lugs don’t always fit standard sockets. Flip sockets like the ones found at CTA offer a dual-size design (Example: 21mm on one side, 21.5mm on the other) for a precise fit. Pair them with a 1/2” drive extension for use with impact tools or wrenches. With the right approach and tools, stubborn lugs become much easier to remove—saving time and frustration in the shop.

Modular flexibility

This shop owner’s setup can be molded into whatever he needs as his business grows and changes.

Over the past five years, Tyler Gallardo has made many changes to his business. Initially, he was a mobile technician. Then, he built his own 30’ by 50’ shop, and most recently, he’s made the switch from an LLC to a nonprofit. During this time, you could say that his one constant was change – even with his tool storage set-up. Gallardo uses the Milwaukee Tool PACKOUT System to organize the majority of his tools, and he loves how customizable the system is, allowing him to modify his setup into whatever works best

MODULAR VS. TRADITIONAL SETUPS

Gallardo’s main set-up consists of two three-drawer PACKOUT systems, one two-drawer, and the Milwaukee Master Mechanics Tool Set, all loaded onto two PACKOUT Dollies. He has modified and customized this setup to his taste.

“Simple stuff like Milwaukee’s battery holders are on the sides,” he

Tyler Gallardo

Shop: Tyler Car Guy

Location: Haines City, Florida

explains. “I have cup holders on the side. I have shelf systems that are basically workspaces on the sides.”

For Gallardo, a modular setup like this is exactly what he wants for his tool storage.

“I personally would never ever use a traditional mechanics tool cart,” he says. “The reason being is they’re often very big, often very bulky. They’re heavy to move around the shop.”

The dolly system keeps everything lightweight and compact, so it can easily be moved around the shop. Additionally, the wheels can be locked in place to prevent any movement. Gallardo also appreciates how modular everything is.

“Say if you have to go do a mobile job, or you’re going on a trip, you can just unclip your PACKOUT and just put it in the back of your car,” he says. “As opposed to unloading your tool cart,

taking everything you need, putting it in a bag, trying to keep it neat and organized, and then on your way back from your long trip, unpacking it and putting it back into the toolbox.”

In addition to the PACKOUT setup, he has a Harbor Freight U.S. General Series 3 72” toolbox. However, this is mainly to store specialty tools, among others that are not everyday-use tools.

UNDERSTAND YOUR TOOLS’ WORTH

When Gallardo was first starting out as a mobile tech, he used totes from Walmart to store his tools. He had a mixture of Harbor Freight hand tools and Milwaukee Tool electric impact wrenches. To grow his tool arsenal, he was using Home Depot’s interest-free financing. All of this to say, he understands how expensive it is just starting out as a technician.

He recommends setting a budget and looking for tools with good warranties. “Understand that if you take care of your tools, your tools will last a lifetime,” Gallardo says.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Milwaukee Tool is constantly coming out with new PACKOUT products, so Gallardo plans to keep an eye out for when those are released. That way, he can continue shaping his setup into exactly what he needs as his business grows. Also, with this switch from an LLC to a nonprofit, he’s looking to bring on one more technician to work with him and expand the number of people he can help.

“Put people first, and you’ll always have work,” he says. “Too many times people want to take advantage of people, [but] when you do right by people, you’ll never have a shortage of clients.”
