SHOP CERTIFIED: WHY BUYING AN NMMA CERTIFIED BOAT MATTERS
Choosing an NMMA Certified boat is key to ensuring you’re buying a safe, reliable boat that you can enjoy for years to come. Learn about the benefits and importance of choosing certified when you’re buying a new boat.
WHAT IS A CERTIFIED BOAT?
Although the U.S. Coast Guard has minimum requirements established for all boats built and sold in the country, these are just bare minimums. NMMA Certification goes beyond those federally regulated requirements to ensure the highest level of boating safety:
• To become certified, manufacturers must pass third-party, hands-on inspections and meet other specific benchmarks.
• NMMA Certification is a voluntary program, so when you’re looking at a certified boat, you know that the manufacturer has decided to go above and beyond the legal bare minimums.
WHAT DOES CERTIFICATION COVER?
If you can stand on a boat and point to it, the inspectors have probably checked it out!
Virtually every system ranging from electrical to steering to plumbing is assessed. And they all must meet the standards set by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC).
HOW TO FIND AND IDENTIFY A CERTIFIED BOAT
How do you know if a boat you’re looking at is certified? Here are a few ways:
1. Look for the NMMA Certified logo: You’ll find it on the boat’s capacity plate (or yacht plate, in the case of larger boats). In addition, you’ll often see it displayed on manufacturers’ websites or printed materials.
2. Check This Boat Show Guide: The Boats by Brand page lists all the boat brands available at the show—certified boat brands are identified with the NMMA Certified logo to make it easy for you to know which boats on display have met certification standards.
3. Use Other Discover Boating Resources: After the show, be sure to check out DiscoverBoating.com. All boats listed in our Boat Finder and all manufacturers featured in our Boat Brands and Manufacturers listings are certified.
THE BENEFITS OF OWNING AN NMMA CERTIFIED BOAT
There are many benefits to owning an NMMA Certified boat, most importantly, the higher bar set for safety. NMMA takes boating safety seriously, and you can rest assured knowing that your certified boat meets our standards.
Other certification advantages include:
• Studies have shown that NMMA Certified boats are seven times less likely to be recalled by the U.S. Coast Guard when compared to uncertified boats.
• Certification goes beyond boats in some cases, extending to trailers, PWC, and even marine oils. When you use certified products, you can have a higher level of confidence in their safety and quality.
• Manufacturers that meet NMMA certification standards always have a point person (or people) who know the standards inside and out. These individuals are experts on safety standards and can spot potential problems before they turn into serious issues.
THE BOTTOM LINE?
An NMMA Certified boat is a safer boat, and that means you can feel confident about your decision when buying one!

DISCOVER BOATING VIDEO
Safety Basics
When it comes to boating, following safety protocols is key to a successful day on the water! In our five-episode Discover Boating Safety Basics series, presented by Progressive® Insurance, you’ll learn how to be a responsible boat passenger, prepared boat captain, safely enjoy water sports, and more. Understanding the must-know boating safety basics allows you to enjoy stress-free, fun-filled days on the water!
Keep reading to learn about important boating safety basics and scan the QR codes to watch the full safety videos.
Etiquette
In this Discover Boating Safety Basics video, you’ll learn the essential boating rules that every boat passenger should follow. Responsible boat passengers should always do the following:
• Listen to the boat captain.
• Wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket.
• Treat the boat with respect (that means no littering).
• Refrain from standing on boat seats, playing with boat controls, or pushing fellow passengers overboard.
Following these boat safety guidelines will help keep everyone safe, and ensure you’ll be invited on your crew’s next boating adventure!
Celebrate
SAFELY ON A BOAT
In our "Celebrate Safely" video, you will discover essential tips for enjoying your next celebration on the water while prioritizing safety.
Having a good time on the water is what boating is all about. However, behaving irresponsibly leads to accidents that could put your life and others’ lives at risk.
Before your next boat celebration, follow these important safety tips:
• Never drink and drive a boat.
• Designate a sober skipper.
• Wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket.
• Refrain from bringing glass on-board.
• Stay properly hydrated and pack snacks.
Captain's DUTIES
Being a boat captain comes with significant responsibility; you're not only responsible for ensuring the safety of everyone on board but also for the condition of the vessel itself. That's why boat captains must know safety best practices to keep themselves, their passengers, and their vessels safe.
Learn how to be a prepared boat captain that keeps their crew safe on every boating journey. Our Boat Captain’s Duties video explains why every responsible boat captain should:
• Take a boating safety course.
• Drive at a responsible speed.
• Never drink and drive.
• Follow navigation rules.
• Check weather conditions before embarking.
• Confirm that the emergency cut off lanyard is operational and attached when the boat is underway.
These are just a few of the responsibilities you'll need to master before getting out on the water.
WATERSPORT Essentials
Participating in watersports is one of the most enjoyable aspects of boating. Whether you prefer to waterski, ride an inflatable tube, wakeboard, or wake surf, these activities are a great way to bond with family and friends.
As with all boating activities, safety should always come first. Be sure to follow these watersport safety tips:
• Designate a spotter.
• Pack and wear USCG approved life jackets.
• Learn and use watersport hand signals.
• Use proper pickup skills.
BOAT CAPACITY AND CARRIAGE
Requirements
Whileboat capacity and carriage requirements are incredibly important, some boaters may not know what they are! Boat capacity refers to how much weight your boat can safely carry, while boat carriage requirements state the necessary safety equipment boaters must have on board. Failing to follow these guidelines poses severe consequences for yourself, your vessel, and your passengers.
In this video, discover the crucial capacity and carriage requirements that are essential for every boating voyage. This safety checklist will guide you in ensuring you have all the necessary items on board, including:
• Personal flotation devices for all passengers.
• Sound device
• Visual distress signals
• Fire extinguisher
• First aid kit
We Share It
In a nutshell, my role at Progressive is to acquire customers for our motorcycle, boat, and RV insurance and protection products. My colleagues and I feel that we have a distinct advantage when designing our products, because as owners ourselves, we understand your unique needs and share your passion for these vehicles.
In my case, this has been a lifelong passion. From a young age, I'd ride on the back of my dad's Suzuki on Saturday mornings as we got out of the house and checked out local garage sales. Over the years, I graduated from a moped to my first grown-up bike: a beautiful blue Suzuki Katana.
After getting married and starting a family, my priorities changed, but I never lost my passion for motorcycles. I inherited a 2000 Harley FXDX after my father hung up his helmet, and I'm beginning to create those weekend memories with my own children, who don helmets and long pants for a chance to take short, low-speed rides on the back of "dad's motorcycle."
My most recent source of adventure if a Polaris RZR side-by-side that I got last fall. It's a four-seater, which means my wife and two kids can come along, and we take it trail riding in the beautiful mountains of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. I think of it as part market research for my day job and part family getaway. It's a great excuse for my family to trade in our iPads, video games, and other distractions for lunch on the trails. We already have many years' worth of stories to laugh about around the dinner table. (Yes, Kevin, I'm talking about that "shortcut" you suggested.)
I'd be remiss if I didn't also mention watercraft and RVs, which, of course Progressive also insures. After selling the Katana, we gave boating a try with a Sea Ray cabin cruiser and a pair of WaveRunners. In fact, I can honestly say that I either own or have owned every major type of vehicle we insure at Progressive, with the exception of an RV, though we often go camping with my in-laws in their Forest River Mini Lite.
Needless to say, I insure all of my vehicles with Progressive. The reason is obvious; I know Progressive is just as passionate about these vehicles as I am, so I know our polices are exactly what people like us need.
Being properly insured is important, not only for the vehicle, but to protect against liability and the unknown. I want to protect my family and our financial stability, as well as cover potential medical costs and vehicle repairs. My whole family enjoys getting away from the day-to-day with these toys, and knowing we're insured when we go out gives us all the peace of mind we need to make those memories even more special.
