So lets all get pissed then shall we? Or so it seems as we move in to further lockdown measures being relaxed this weekend meaning that we can all enjoy a cold beer down our local drinking hole. Just remember to pre-book your drinking slot as pubs are moving towards booking online in advance of your session. Personally I can not wait to get my noggin cut this weekend as my hair is getting stupidly out of hand after months of it going out of control. Some say I look like Barry Gibb of the iconic 70s group The Bee Gees either way its time for a short back and sides I think. It was such a shame to see a local lockdown come in to force this week as Leicester locked their doors once more, but stupidly allowing people to travel outside the city to shop. I can see this becoming a trend for the rest or the year as we persistently choose to take the piss with the rules that Boris and his team monkeys layout. Finally I would like to thank all those that took part in our last competition to win £250. As it was such a great success in generating more local subscribers we’ve only gone and done it again with a bigger prize fund up for grabs.

BEST ENERGY DEALS BACK AT 2016 PRICES
It’s four years since the Brexit vote was held on June 23, 2016 and while a huge amount has changed across Britain since then, household gas and electricity prices are now back at the same level, say industry experts.
“We’re seeing suppliers launching new tariffs offering the lowest prices in years and anyone who has not changed their energy provider this year needs to check immediately to see if they can save money.
While the price of shopping has risen by an average of 11 per cent, house prices by nine per cent, and rail fares by 10 per cent, the cost of the best value household fuel bills - which had risen until November 2018 – are now back at summer 2016 prices.
“Even people on a fixed tariff may find it is more cost effective to pay any exit fees and move to a cheaper tariff while prices are low.
The trend means people who last changed their gas and electricity deal in 2018 are now missing out on huge savings due to the recent plunge in energy prices. “Many people believe that energy costs just go up and up, but that hasn’t been the case over the last six-12 months,” said Mark Gutteridge, managing director of auto-switching service Flipper, which seeks out the cheapest deals for its members. “The price of the cheapest duel fuel deal increased by 30 per cent between Summer 2016 and November 2018 adding more than £200 per year to bills, but since then energy prices have been falling, and following a big drop over the past few months, the best deals available now cost the same as four years ago.
“Anyone who has recently switched will be enjoying much lower bills, but those households who are still on the same deal they were 12 months ago, are now paying hundreds of pounds more than they should be. The average household can save nearly £370 by moving from a supplier’s standard tariff to one of the best deals currently available.” Flipper is the UK’s first auto-energy switcher and prides itself on being truly independent as it does not take commission-based referrals from any of the energy providers. The site offers a subscription service and manages bills on behalf of its members using an algorithm to scan the market to find energy deals. VMA goes Virtual and comes out Victorious.
At VMA (Visionary Martial Arts) we are a karate community. With so many friends and families taking part in our classes we were very concerned about how our club would survive during lockdown, not only that but we were only a week away from our student grading which the children were really excited for. So, we had to figure out how to keep classes going, not just for business but to give our amazing students a bit of normality. That’s when we decided to launch our Virtual Training, we made our own home studio and learned how to use video conferencing so our students could still get that personal interaction, rather than just watching an instructor teach which was very important for us. We are a community whether in person or over cyberspace. On the 25th of March we launched our Virtual Training programme, running 5 days a week, we were adamant that we were going to bring the same high quality of freestyle creative karate classes to all our students.
This situation has not been ideal but the students are enjoying being able to keep up their passion and keep in touch with their friends seeing them daily in our classes and being able to interact with others despite the rules and regulations currently in place. Since then we have been firing on all cylinders, with students having already passed 1 virtual grading earning their new belts and they are currently preparing for their next one at the end of the month, some students are even getting ready to learn their first martial arts weapons.

CITY AND PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLING CLUB From time to time there is,amongst the list of local friendly fixtures a special game, a day out to enjoy playing bowls a little further from home and to create memories that will live in the memory for a long time. Between 2009 and 2018 there were five such games ---- each memorable for different and unique reasons. Where would you be bowling and see Green Parakeets flying around? Where would you complete your journey to the green by boat or keep an eye open to see if The Queen might appear? Where would you stop off at one seaside resort for lunch and then move on to another to bowl on a green with a view of the sea? On June 28th 2009 an excited coach full of City and Port Bowlers headed for Windsor Great Park to play a six rink game and it was here that the Parakeets were very much an attraction. Not just one or two but a whole flock of them. The sun shone, the game was enjoyed and at the end there was tea and drinks in the magnificent club facilities --- what a place to have tea!!

To add further to the sense of occasion the hosts sang their club song --- and sang it very well. It was quite a day. The following season, on July 10th there was a very different day out. A visit to the seaside and not one but two resorts and a game of bowls!! Sidmouth was the first port of call and time for lunch before moving on to Seaton --- just up the coast and a six rink game on a green with views of the sea and a warm welcome from the hosts. It was a little over three years later on September 18th 2013 that there was a very special game in Windsor --- this time against The Royal Household. Her Majesty The Queen is Patron of the club and captain Graham Crisp did say that on occasions, when the Queen is in residence at Windsor Castle she does take an interest in the club and does come to watch games and meet the people who are playing. So --- a visit was possible but on this occasion didn’t happen, so we didn’t get to meet the queen!!
Tea was taken at the mid-point in the game --- on silver trays and in silver teapots – it was just a cup of tea and a biscuit served around the edge of the green. It has to be said that the green was rather sandy.At the end of the game, played in glorious sunshine there was food and a drink. No singing this time but a wonderful day and a great occasion in great surroundings. A further three years later on June 19th 2016 the City and Port Club headed for Caversham and a first ever visit to the Island Bohemian Club. This is a truly unique experience because the final part of the journey is by boat to the island in the middle of the River Thames. The sun shone and the six rink game was enjoyed by all. At the end of it was a two course meal, drinks and a rendition of the Island Song. The island was visited again on May 27th 2018 and whether it was a first or a return visit bowlers of the City and Port enjoyed it just as much --- a great and unique day out. Whenever City and Port play at a green away from Bristol either on tour or on a day out an invitation is issued to the hosts to come to Shirehampton for a game next season. Invitations are often politely declined but on the second visit to Caversham the answer was yes and on September 15th 2019 Guy Thorne and Island Bohemian arrived in Nibley Road to play a six rink game.
The Island team play very few away games so City and Port were lucky to fortunate to host a game against them on September 15th 2019 --- on a fine day and it all went very well. Special games need to be organised and Gill Hinksman did the early ones --- David Hinksman the first trip to The Island and Lis and Bill the return visit. Tuesday 16th June ---- just after mid-day saw the first woods of the 2020 season rolling on the green. Bowling has been allowed to start but all clubs and individual players must follow the government approved rules, issued by Bowls England in order to do so. There will be no games against other clubs this season and the number of bowlers on a green at one time will be stricktly regulated. Charlie Maby and Dave Chilcott were the first bowlers to bowl this season --- all within the rules, and they had close to two hours of bowling on a green much improved from last season. Government announcement provides hope for Bristol hoteliers This week’s Government announcement that hotels can re-open their doors to guests from July 4 has been welcomed by the Bristol Hoteliers Association (BHA). Many of its member establishments are now working to ensure that they are ‘Covid safe’ in order to be able to welcome back paying customers and begin to get back in business. Like many businesses in the hospitality sector nationwide, the coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on BHA members. But the Government’s easing of the lockdown rules, and of the two-metre social distancing requirements, means the BHA is keen to look to the future. Raphael Herzog, BHA Chair, said: “The Government’s announcement that the hospitality sector re-open from July 4 is, indeed, very good news.
“This has been an extremely difficult time for many businesses, and we have a duty to ensure we take every possible precaution to reduce the risk of a further spike in coronavirus cases, while at the same time trying to get our hotels back in business as much as possible. “Some premises have been completely closed during the lockdown, while others have provided accommodation for essential key workers. “Undoubtedly there will still be some difficult times ahead for many businesses, but we are all very much looking forward to welcoming back guests – old and new – to our hotels.” He added that the experience of visiting any hotel is going to be very different to what it was before the pandemic. He said: “Many hotels and other tourism operators will need to adapt, using technology such as on-line check-ins, apps to enable people to order food and drinks, even drive-through check-ins. “We are all going to have to adapt and re-think the way we do things.”
“Ideally, we would have preferred it the announcement to have been made sooner, but now that we have a date, we can all focus on getting ready to re-open our hotels.
Mr Herzog said while this week’s announcement is a welcome one, much more needs to happen before hotels can be more confident of being able to survive in the longer-term.
“We will all need to implement new procedures and measures, to ensure that we are Covid-safe. As always, the health and safety of our staff and our guests is of utmost importance.
“We need to see the larger meetings, conferences and weddings return, which make a vital contribution to the economic viability of many hotels in the city.
“That means that not every hotel will be opening its doors on July 4, as each business will have unique characteristics and challenges to overcome, but the Government’s announcement this week gives us the green light to start properly preparing.
“We are allowed to accommodate weddings involving up to 30 people in July, which will be reviewed hopefully in August.
“Many hotels are planning to open in early July, with others aiming for August or even later, depending upon demand in the city. “Many, many, people – those who have been confined to their homes for many weeks as well as others who have been working flat-out during the crisis – will feel that they want, need and deserve a break but they will also want to know that the place they choose to stay in is going to be as safe as possible. We really welcome to words from the PM on people to Staycation this summer in order to boost the UK economy. “All our members will be working hard to ensure that when they re-open their hotels, they will be as safe as they possibly can be.

“Spa and leisure facilities are also an important income generator for many hotels, and the sooner these can be re-opened, the better it will be, so there is still a very difficult road ahead for many businesses.” He said there are measures that the Government can introduce which could help, including reducing VAT to 15 percent, and extending the length of time that the furlough scheme can be used by the hospitality and leisure sector, which is one of the last industries to benefit from a lifting of lockdown restrictions. The Bristol Hoteliers Association represents 40 major hotels in the city, with around 4,000 rooms. Hotels put an estimated £200 million into the local economy.

Postcards from lockdown – highlighting children and young people. It’s been difficult enough for the average adult to cope with the personal repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic and lock down – but what has it been like for children and young adults? There must have been high and lows, and for many it will have been difficult. Those who are younger and have access to safe outdoor space may have enjoyed playing out in summer weather but others will have spent a lot of time indoors.
The postcards will be displayed in the Sea Mills Museum – (AKA the old phone box in Sea Mills Square) and on notice boards around Sea Mills and Coombe Dingle as well as online. Research shows that children and young people benefit from finding ways to express their individual experiences. Dr. Georgina Taylor, clinical manager of The Bridge Foundation Psychotherapy Service in Bristol says: "When children can express their thoughts and feelings to others, in words or pictures, it can help them to process their experiences and to feel that these are valued and heard by others. It can also help them to feel more connected to other people”.
A report by the Childhood Trust published recently highlighted the effects to children’s mental health. They found worries about the virus, children missing their friends, school and concerns about their parents who may have lost jobs and be struggling to pay rent or buy food. Young people have had their futures thrown into uncertainly, exams cancelled, the university experience radically changed and career or job prospects uncertain. All children and young people are invited to participate, regardless of where they live. The postcards will be kept together as an archive so will also become part of the record of this time.
Sea Mills 100 and Sea Mills and Coombe Dingle Together have joined forces for a project to focus on the experiences of children and young people and highlight them to others. Mary Milton of Sea Mills 100 says “We have been unable to open our museum during lockdown so we wanted to find a way of supporting our local community by using our window displays in creative way. We are inviting children and young people to send us a ‘postcard from lockdown’. We want to hear what they are doing and how they feel about what is happening right now.”

Welcome to the council's coronavirus information and advice newsletter This month, the Prime Minister set out a series of ne changes to the lockdown measures in England from Saturday 4 July. These include:
1. From Monday 6 July, those who are ‘clinically extremely vulnerable’ and currently shielding from coronavirus can:

Spend time outdoors (in a public outdoor space, private garden or uncovered yard or terrace) in a group of up to six people, including those from outside their household while following social distancing
• •
•
Reopening of pubs, restaurants and hairdressers provided they are ‘Covidsecure’ which means having special safety measures in place Reopening of hotels, campsites and other accommodation Two households will be able to meet up in any setting while following social distancing The reduction of social distancing to 1m plus, where 2m is not possible.
Other leisure facilities and attractions may also begin to reopen, if safe to do so including outdoor gyms and playgrounds, museums, places of worship, libraries and community centres. While we welcome these announcements, many businesses and council-run facilities will need to put in place special measures and that may take some time. Thank you for your continued patience. Although we welcome this positive step it is extremely important to continue to protect yourself by staying at home as much as possible and avoiding close contact with those from outside your home should you need to go outside, especially if you are clinically vulnerable. As Bristol begins to reopen again, we must try to avoid crowded public spaces where possible, especially if unable to practise social distancing. Washing your hands regularly, wearing face coverings, and maintaining your distance from others are all essential to help keep our regional ‘R’ number down and reduce risk of infection. Form a ‘support bubble’ if they live alone or are a single parent with children, with one other household of any size; spending time inside each other’s homes, including overnight, while maintaining social distancing From Saturday 1 August, guidance on shielding will be fully relaxed, meaning those who are shielding will no longer be advised to shield. Those who need to work and are unable to do so from home will be able to return to their workplace, provided it is Covid-secure. 2. Support from the government will continue for those shielding until the end of July – including food packages and medicines. Priority food shopping delivery slots will also remain available from selected supermarkets, and will continue beyond the end of July for those already registered for support. Further advice for and guidance on shielding is available on the central Government website. Accessing your Pension Money sensibly and avoiding Pension scams by Ben Hirst Chartered Independent Whether you have a defined benefit or defined contribution pension scheme, you can often start taking benefits from the age of 55. You could use this to help top up your salary if you are still working or to enable you to work fewer hours or even retire early. You may also be able to release a cash sum from your pension too. Often the first 25% of the fund will be tax-free if taken as a cash sum. The remaining 75% would be counted as income and taxed in the usual way. So care needs to be taken as could push you into a higher income tax bracket for that financial year.
One particular scam to be wary of and avoid is companies claiming they can access your pension money before the age 55. Accessing your pension before age 55 is viewed as an unauthorised payment in most circumstances. The tax you will pay for accessing can be up to 55%, as well as charges of up to 30% by the firm which does it for you.
If a website or marketing brochure advertises that you can or should access your pension before the age of 55, it is unlikely they will be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority and any advice or guidance they give you will be unregulated. THIS GROWN-UP, BITTERSWEET BAKE IS MADE WITH A RICH MIXTURE OF STOUT, CHOCOLATE AND SPICES

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 200C/fan 180 C /Gas 6. Toss the squash and onion in 1 ½ of oil, 1 tbsp of the pesto and seasoning. Roast for 30 mins until beginning to soften. Add the kale and roast for 10 mins more 2. Meanwhile, mix the remaining pesto with the yogurt to make a dressing 3. Heat the rest of the oil in a frying pan, and fry the butter beans until they begin to pop and blister. Transfer to a large bowl. Add the roasted veg and pecans to the pan and toss together. Transfer the salad to a serving dish and drizzle over the dressing. Serve immediately.

LOW IN SATURATED FAT AND READY IN 30 MINUTES, THIS VEGAN CURRY MAKES A GREAT MIDWEEK DINNER
INGREDIENTS • 75g Fairtrade caster sugar • 5 small bananas, cut into 1cm slices • ½ tsp ground cinnamon or grated nutmeg (optional) • 75g cashew nuts, roughly chopped and toasted • 75g Fairtrade 80% cocoa dark cooking chocolate, roughly, chopped • 8 slices bread (we used a farmhouse white loaf) • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
FEEDS 4 READY IN 30 MINUTES INGREDIENTS • 1tsbp vegetable oil • 1 red onion, thinly sliced • 3cm ginger, finely grated • 2 British leeks, thinly sliced diagonally • 1 tsp missed peppers, thinly sliced • 1tsp each ground cumin and garam masala • ½ tsp ground turmeric • 400g can Italian chopped tomatoes • 1tsp fair trade caster sugar • 2 x 250g pack microwave basmati rice • 30g flaked almonds, toasted • 2 tbsp roughly chopped coriander leaves • 4 tbsp coconut dairy free yogurt alternative METHOD 1. Heat the oil in a pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and fry for 8 – 10 mins, until softened and starting to turn golden. Add the ginger, leek, peppers and spices. Fry for 1-2 min until fragrant, then stir in the chopped tomatoes, along with the sugar 2. Bring to the boil and simmer for 5 mins, until thickened, then season to taste 3. Cook the rice according to the pack instructions, then mix in the flaked almonds. Scatter the coriander over the curry, then serve with the rice and yogurt alternative
METHOD 1. Put the caster sugar in a nonstick frying pan with 1 tbsp cold water 2. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved, then increase the heat until it bubbles and turns amber 3. Carefully add the bananas and spices, if using, and cook over a high heat for 1-2 mins, tossing to coat all over. Leave to call for 5 mins 4. Divide the bananas, nuts and chocolate between 4 bread slices 5. Top with the other slices, then brush the tops with half the oil 6. In a large, dry nonstick frying pan, cook the sandwiches oil-side down for 1-2 mins until golden 7. Brush the tops with remaining oil, flip, then cook for 1-2 mins 8. Halve the toasties to serve
