THANK YOU for Participating in Our Spring 2017 Donation & Dumping Day Close to 300 cars came through our parking lot, which shows this semi-annual event continues to be needed and appreciated by the Stone Oak community. Over all, you filled two trucks with donations for Disabled Veterans, disposed of 12.72 tons of bulky waste, and recycled 6.69 tons of metal! Continue to watch our website calendar at www.StoneOakPOA.com as the next Donation & Dumping event will take place in the fall. It will be posted as soon as it is confirmed with the City of San Antonio. Or, you can register on our website, and receive a reminder a couple weeks in advance of the event. At these events, many people ask about hazardous waste, and when/where they can dispose of bulky items outside of these special events. The POA has been told by the City of San Antonio anyone with an environmental fee charge reflected on their CPS bill can utilize the following services- including residents who may have a vendor other than the City of San Antonio providing their regular residential trash and recycling service. And remember - you can also always call 3-1-1 to inquire of any public disposal events within San Antonio.

Reagan High School Orchestra Students Compete at UIL The Annual UIL Competition was held at Alamo Heights High School March 6-8. Led by Orchestra Director Sixto Elizondo, and Assistant Orchestra Director Nathan Sharplin, Reagan High School Orchestra brought an abundance of talent to the competition with their seven orchestras - two full orchestras and five string orchestras - making Reagan one of only two NEISD schools with both varsity and non-varsity full orchestras. All orchestras competed in two categories: concert performances and a sight reading contest. During sight reading, the orchestra is given less than ten minutes to read new music, receive instruction from their Director, and perform the piece for the first time to three judges. Reagan Symphony Orchestra earned Sweepstakes earning the highest rating of “1” in both concert and sight reading contests. Their Philharmonic Orchestra received ratings of “1” in the concert competition. The Reagan Chamber, Sinfonia, and Bravura Orchestras also earned sweepstakes in their events, while the combined Camerata and Philharmonia earned a “1” in the concert competition. Special thanks to Mr. Mason Daffinee, Reagan Band Director, for sharing his time, talent, and students for the non-varsity full orchestra. Congratulations Rattlers!

Mail Theft Information

Unfortunately, mail theft continues to expand and increase in occurrence. The US Postal Service and their maintenance team has been overwhelmed with requests for mailbox repairs. This is a source of frustration for everyone- residents, the postal service, SAPD, and the postal inspectors. All these entities encourage you to check your mail daily, and immediately report any theft to the United States Postal Inspectors Office, then SAPD. The Postal Inspectors and SAPD stress the importance of the need for stronger mail theft laws to ensure criminals are arrested and charged, providing longer sentences, thus deterring them from breaking into the boxes. It can be difficult for SAPD to arrest some of these individuals without appropriate legislation. You can contact your State Representatives and/or State Senator and ask for stronger mail theft laws by encouraging the passing of House Bill 1747 which would provide such legislation. (The POA is simply providing this information as a public service to the community.)

Stone Oak Sign Policy One of the reasons your Stone Oak community looks different from other communities within San Antonio is the result of the Stone Oak Sign Policy. All signs within Stone Oak boundaries must meet policy guidelines, are required to be professionally made, and must first be approved by the Stone Oak POA Architectural Review Committee (ARC) - this includes business signs, wall signs, monument signs, neighborhood entry monuments, and even community garage sale signs. Signage placed without prior approval is subject to removal with no prior warning. Out of concern for turf drip irrigation, no signs are ever approved for placement within medians, and will be removed with no advance warning. You can read the Stone Oak Sign Policy, and the Stone Oak Sign Removal Policy, on our website, www.StoneOakPOA.com, under the “Governing Documents” tab. Of special note- if you are having an open house - ONE real estate open house sign is permitted next to the monument at the entrance of the neighborhood during the open house hours. No Stone Oak ARC approval is needed for this one real estate sign, however it must be professionally made and in a metal frame. No balloons, streamers, human signage, or directional signs are permitted. (Any signage within the neighborhood is subject to that HOA’s guidelines, so check with your HOA regarding those.) To prevent the frustration of missing signs, please ensure your realtor is aware of this policy if your home is scheduled for an open house.

2017 Bond The May 6th election is quickly approaching. We encourage all residents to visit the City of San Antonio’s detailed information page regarding the 2017 Bond that is included on the ballot. Perhaps the project of most interest to the Stone Oak area is the extension of Hardy Oak Boulevard to Sonterra Boulevard, and the extension of Huebner Road to Hardy Oak Boulevard. This will assist with traffic congestion on Stone Oak Parkway. A large park area with ball fields off of the planned Hardy Oak Boulevard connection would be also be included, as well as a new senior center for District 9 off of West Avenue. These are just a couple of items – we encourage you to read more about the proposed Bond, and find much more detail regarding each faucet of the proposed improvements, including questions regarding funding, at www.SanAntonio. gov/2017Bond. Booklets with this information are also available in the POA office.

Just a reminder from your Stone Oak POA…. Have you recently rented out your home? Have you inherited a property after a family death? Placed your property into a trust? Have you recently married or divorced? Changes can happen, but it is the responsibility of the property owner to notify the POA office of any address or contact information changes. Regardless of changes, property owners are held responsible for their assessments. The name that appears on the deed of the property is deemed the property owner, and although we are notified of property sales from title companies after closings, private closings or other legal changes may not make it to our records in a timely manner without your assistance. result in us being unable to communicate details with someone who may actually be authorized. We are required to have any changes requested in writing. How to Get Rid of the Ants in Your Plants! By Nathan Riggs Temperatures are warming, plants are blooming and the urge to participate in the SAWS Landscape/Patioscape Coupon program is strong! With those good intentions to save water comes the need to work the soil, remove grass, add good soil, install those nice coupon plants and mulch them into blissful beauty. Invariably, homeowners and gardeners cross paths with one of our least favorite landscape denizens: the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta), commonly known as the fire ant. Fire ants have been the bane of landscape enjoyment for many years in Texas and have stung their way into the doghouse of many humans and pets alike. For those whose landscape work is rudely interrupted and delayed by fire ants, the question arises â€œWhat can I use to kill

these fire ants relatively quickly and still be able to finish my work without lots of pesticide residue hanging around?â€? The answer comes from years of field research by entomologists with Texas A&M Agrilife Extension and itâ€™s an easy, effective and natural remedy you can concoct at home. There are three simple ingredients: water, orange oil and blue Dawn dish soap. Here is the recipe: t 1 gallon water t 3 ounces blue Dawn dish soap (Why blue Dawn? Research showed it worked better than other brands and colors.) t 1.5 ounces orange oil (Be sure to use the correct measure â€” orange oil at a 3-ounce-per-gallon rate is used as a natural herbicide and will burn plants.) The soap helps the orange oil mix well in the water and stick to the ants in the soil. Apply the mixture following these easy steps: (Continued on page 15)

1. Add the orange oil and soap to the water and mix thoroughly. 2. DO NOT DISTURB the fire ant nest before applying the orange oil/soap/water mixture, no matter how much fun it is!! If you disturb the nest first, the ants will begin to disperse away from the nest and your treatment will be much less successful, if at all. 3. Beginning at the center of the mound, slowly pour the mixture onto the soil in a circle, gradually expanding the circle from the center outward. Cover the mound area completely from center to edges. 4. USE ALL OF THE MIXTURE ON THE MOUND, no matter the size of the nest. Results of the Agrilife field tests showed a better than 70 percent success rate of treatment when compared to boiling water, regular water and other similar treatments. After treatment, you should be able to continue working within an hour or so. Be sure to take precautions for the few ants that may still be alive. NOTE: Adding more orange oil than listed in the recipe dramatically increases the changes of plant damage or mortality by this treatment. With orange oil at 1.5 ounces per gallon, plants may experience a little bit of yellowing, but it shouldnâ€™t kill the plants. The Annual Spring Time Invasion By Mark A. Peterson To some they are leaf-eating monsters hanging from silken threads. To others it is the start of the annual caterpillar smorgasbord. Those half inch caterpillars hanging from silken threads are spring and fall cankerworms, Paleacrita vernata and Alsophila pometaria, respectively. Both emerge in the spring, but the two are differentiated as to when the females lay their eggs. Together with the forest tent caterpillar, Malacosma disstrium, and the oak leaf roller, Archips semiferana, they emerge in late March and early April to feed on newly formed leaves, primarily live and red oak leaves. A unique feature of the cankerworm is its ability to float on silken threads with the wind from tree to tree. This greatly expands its food source. For despite their size, they are some of the most voracious caterpillars known, devouring everything but the leaf midrib and often defoliating an entire tree. After approximately four weeks of non-stop gorging, cankerworms migrate to the soil where they pupate until next spring. At that time, the wingless female moths crawl up tree trunks and lay their eggs. Since this is a natural occurrence and they have co-existed with oaks for eons, cankerworms will not kill a live oak after one infestation. If, however, there are repeated infestations over a 3-5 year period, they can have a detrimental affect.

infestation. The easiest treatment, of course, is to do nothing. These are annual pests that come and go in long cycles. It is always recommended to assist a heavily infested tree with additional care such as adequate water and very slow release fertilizer. Since the females are wingless, some have used sticky tree bands with marginal success. The best known organic treatment is a bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis, which is toxic only to caterpillars. In exchange for extremely low toxicity – person can eat it without harm – a homeowner accepts some defoliation. One problem with Bt is that it has a rather short potency period of 2-4 days. Another organic treatment is a chemical called spinosad, which is also made from a bacterium but has potency for 3-4 weeks. It also works very well on thrips, fire ants, and webworms, another irksome caterpillar that occurs in May and June. So, do not worry about whether your live oak is going to die, I can guarantee it will not, unless, of course, you have also done something silly like used weed and feed fertilizers or other weed killers, added soil over the roots, watered more than twice a month, built a patio or flower bed next to the trunk, watered with water-softened water, etc.etc. How to kill a tree? The list is endless and nearly always involves humans. Relax, and cheer on the Spurs in the playoffs…

NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATIVES The Neighborhood Representative Committee meets the second Wednesday of each month (with the exception of December and January) at 7:00PM in the Director’s Room at the Club at Sonterra. These meetings last about one hour, and are designed to assist in communication between residential neighborhoods and the POA, while providing the opportunity for communities to ask questions, and trade valuable ideas and information. Past speakers have included SAWS, CPS, the City of San Antonio, SAPD, and Allied/Republic Waste. This group is vital to the Stone Oak community, and its members are usually the first to receive valuable information and updates from the POA. Many entities such as SAPD, CPS, and SAWS also have come to rely on them to get information out to the public quickly.
