HISTORY OF MOULTON

DEEP ROOTS

Historical Moulton, Texas COMMUNITY FINDS THEIR PLACE ON THE MAP IN 1836, LONG BEFORE CITY WAS INCORPORATED IN 1937

here was no organized settlement in the beginning. Separate families lived throughout the region in isolated cabins, each working the land they owned. Further settlement came to an abrupt halt in October 1835 with the “Come and Take It” Battle at Gonzales. People who lived in what was to become the Moulton area got caught up in the Texas Revolution as did most Anglo-Americans living in Texas. Soon after the Alamo fell, General Sam Houston abandoned Gonzales and burned the town so as to leave nothing of value for the Mexicans. On March 15, 1836 part of the Texas Army camped on the East Fork of the Lavaca River. Today a State monument on the present site of the American Legion Hall marks the approximate site. They only camped there for a short time, just long enough for a small black slave boy of six years to meet and speak with General Houston. That young slave, Mose Chappel, later went on to become one of Moulton’s oldest and most unforgettable citizens. No one knows exactly how the settlement actually got its name. One theory suggest that the community received its name from a native of Moulton, Alabama, who named it after his hometown. Another suggests that the community was named after E. L. Moulton, a pioneer settler. Yet another says the settlement was named after the small circular patches of oak trees called “motts” that abound the region.

In 1887 the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad Company laid out a spur from Yoakum northward to Waco. Soon after the construction of the railroad, a depot was built on the west side of the tracks and was called Topeka. Soon the little depot became the economic center of the area. In 1887 the first business opened in Moulton was a general store owned by Ed Boehm with later additions that also housed a saloon, barber shop and the post office. To handle the large influx of people arriving in the growing community during this period, the Samuel Moore family built the large 32 room Moore Hotel in 1888. The Moore Hotel was located directly east of the tracks and the depot. The hotel operated until 1940 when it was demolished to make way for a new business, the Pundt’s Café that was later remodeled into the current Kloesel’s Steakhouse and Bar. Geographically speaking, Moulton lies in the heart of South Central Texas along the border of the Post Oak Belt and Gulf Coastal Plains. Kloesel’s Steakhouse & Bar in Moulton is a destination for travelers

seeking fine dining in a relaxing, historic atmosphere. The Moore Hotel was built in 1888 by William J. and Mary O’Daniel Moore to accommodate travelers. It was sold to Christian Kotzebue in 1890 but, after several decades of operation, gradually went out of business and was razed in 1940. In 1978, the Kloesels purchased a house belonging to the Kotzebue family, renovated it and moved from the upstairs apartment into their new home. The living quarters were then converted into a private dining area, and the east dining room was remodeled into a bar. In 1981, the bar was expanded to include a dance floor and more seating. Additional expansion was done in 1993 to accommodate the pool tables.

Sam and Will Moore Institute’s name honors brothers who gave site and half costs of building; the community matched their donation. The architect was H. Struve and the building contractors were Joel Meyer & Co. The Order of Sons of Hermann laid cornerstone July 31, 1901, in a gala celebration including a parade, band concert, barbecue, ball, and orations in English, German, and Czechoslovakian. The North wing was added in 1923.

AREA ATTRACTIONS After laying the cornerstone on July 31, 1901, a great party ensued. The City Band and the Lone Star Band opened the festivities at 10 a.m. for an estimated crowd of 5,000 enthusiastic celebrants. After a long parade, 21 head of cattle and several sheep were barbecued and 81 kegs of beer were consumed. A dance lasting until 2 a.m. concluded the celebration. A newspaper account of 1901 stated that enrollment the first year as 170. Today, the historic building still houses Moulton Independent School District students. Sam and Will Moore Institute is located at 400 Bobkat Drive.

A complete history of the Moulton Cemetery is not possible due to the lack of official records retention. The information known is based on research of county records, newspapers and personal interviews with those of with knowledge of the cemetery.

Sam and Will Moore Institute still houses public school students today.

The cemetery consists of two separate fenced areas, one large area for Caucasians and one small area for African Americans. In spite of research of records from Gonzales and Lavaca counties, no documents have been discovered that determine the establishment of the cemetery. It is believed that the first burial occurred in 1855 or 1856. The earliest date of burial on the marked graves is that of Louisa Lattimer (1842-1857), burial plot #63.

The full history of the Moulton Cemetery remains a mystery.

There are a number of burial plots having only one date on the tombstone, therefore; it is not possible to determine the age, date of birth or date of death. The Old Moulton Cemetery has been recognized by the Texas Historical Commission. It is located at the end of Lavaca County Road 1680C.

exas saddlemaker and leather artist Don Gonzales recently chose an old shoe shop in downtown Moulton as home for his craft. With roots in the area, Gonzales relocated his family from College Station to the small Texas town and never looked back. “My mom and dad moved here in 2010,” said Gonzales. “And then, unfortunately, Dad passed away in 2013. Mom’s been here ever since so we spent a lot of time down here and really liked Moulton, always enjoying our visits. When our little girl was about to start Kindergarten, we looked into school districts, and it was an easy decision to choose Moulton. Things just fell into place.”

And finding a location for Gonzales to move his leathercraft business to seemed to fall right into place, as well. “Two or three years ago, we first sat on the front porch of what was Rudy’s Shoe Shop years prior,” shared Gonzales. “At that time, the 1897 building wasn’t available. I’d always look through the window and think it would make a cool saddle shop. I wanted to be downtown and, when the shop did become available, things just lined up and we agreed to give it a go. Since it was home to the shoe shop for years, I feel like the old building breathed a sigh of relief that another leather craftsman was moving in.” Although Gonzales has a strong passion and a long history of building custom saddles, today it is the teaching of his craft that motivates him most in his work. “Five or six years ago, we started a YouTube account and kind of threw a few videos up there,” added Gonzales. “They got a few views and we had fun making the videos. Then we started offering a few patterns on our website and selling the digital file of the artwork, because learning to draw is the hardest part. I can teach anybody to do the leatherwork part but learning to actually do the artwork, that takes a lifetime to learn. Ha, I’m still learning! ertain things are passed on from generation to generation. Often one will inherit their grandparents’ China, family photo albums or Mom’s wedding ring. But instead of receiving some common family memento, Willie Pavlas was entrusted with the family tavern. He’s kept it as original as possible, with its wood-carved barback and an old-school jukebox. “I bought it from my Aunt Vlasta and Uncle George in July of 2018,” said Pavlas. “They owned it since 1959. Although my family is from the Moulton area, I grew up in Houston. I came down on weekends to see Grandpa and Grandma. The tavern was my dad’s brother’s place. I grew up in the tavern on the weekends. When my aunt had to close the doors, my cousins pushed me to buy it and keep it in the family; keep the tradition going.”

It Starts at Home MOULTON POLICE CHIEF MITCHELL BENNETT LAYS OUT HIS VISION FOR PUBLIC SAFETY by Michelle Banse Stokes, photos by Emily Henderson

familiar face around town, Moulton Police Chief Mitchell Bennett is breaking barriers and building bridges in his community. A 20-year law enforcement veteran, public service clearly runs in his blood. “It’s a calling,” said Bennet. “I started my law enforcement career in 2001 as a jailer in Gonzales County. Prior to that, my mom was a sheriff’s deputy in Lavaca County and my stepfather was also a sheriff’s deputy. It came naturally for me as I grew older. One of the major influences in my life was the tragic death of a good friend of mine, Sgt. David Furrh of the Gonzales County Sherriff’s Office.” Furrh was killed in the line of duty in 2000 while serving a warrant to search a residence in Luling. “I knew him extremely well,” shared Bennett. “He was one of my mom’s partners in Lavaca County. When he was killed, I knew law enforcement was something I wanted to pursue.” With a positive daily outlook, Chief Bennett’s starts every day with one objective in mind.

“I always want to try and make a difference in someone’s life,’ added Bennett. “I always try and tell myself that if I can change or save just one life, my purpose is complete. I feel the majority of people do appreciate law enforcement and it’s an honorable career. To combat those global challenges, Moulton has implemented several strategies that work to build community relations and citizen engagement. “We live here in the community with everyone, and we want to be approachable,” shared Bennett. “I like our officers to get involved in the community. We treat everyone with the same respect that we would want in return. We also do a lot with the schools and are focused on protecting our youth. For example, our school has the Guardian Program, and we work closely with them on new construction, as well as access to cameras for security purposes and the safety of the kids.”

And although life may seem to move at a slower pace in the country, a police chief’s work in a small town is always busy and never boring. When Chief Bennett’s pager goes off, he can only guess what’s waiting for him. “In addition to my administrative duties, I may get called out for a dog running loose, a house alarm that went off, or cows that escaped their pasture,” said Bennett with a grin. “I also oversee all of our investigations and do grant writing for the city. But it’s great working in Moulton, a town that is very community orientated. I like the small-town atmosphere. I grew up in Hallettsville and it’s the same thing over there.” When not wearing the uniform, Chief Bennett tries to schedule time to pursue his passion for the outdoors and hunting. “When I was little, I was never exposed to hunting,” shared Bennett. “It wasn’t until I was married that my father-in-law introduced me to it. My first deer was a eight-point buck with an 18-inch spread, a nice buck for this area. When the kids were little, I enjoyed taking them along with me, too.” Chief Bennett is quick to share how grateful he is for the support he has received from the community and his plans moving forward. “I’m thankful for the support of the community, as well as our local city council,” said Bennett. “We are out here trying to do what is in the best interest of the people that we serve. he Moulton Jamboree, held every July at Moulton City Park, is an event that proves to be just as popular with the locals as it is with visitors. Drawing crowds from far and wide, the Jamboree includes free entertainment all weekend long. Festivalgoers will enjoy live entertainment from some of the best country and polka bands, car and tractor shows, state championship barbecue cook-off, arts and crafts, a softball tournament, cornhole tournament, carnival for the kids, pie baking, and fun contests. A worship service and grand parade kick off the annual events. You’ll want to stick around for the fried chicken dinner on Sunday.

The original wood dance floor has aged to a beautiful patina, and dance enthusiasts come from miles around to glide over this floor for the perfect dance experience. In 1986, ownership changed from the local VFW chapter to the Knights of Columbus. The hall opens and 7 p.m., Bingo starts at 7:30 p.m. and runs until 10 p.m. Food, fun and refreshments await you on Bingo Night at The Hall at Moulton Oaks. or over 41 years, local artist George Kalisek of George’s Art & Sign Shop has been creating beautiful displays for not only Moulton, but all of Central Texas.

“I started the business on my birthday in 1980,” said Kalisek. “I’ve always loved art. As long as I can remember, I was into art and drawing. As I got into my teen years, people started bringing me signs to letter. In 1980, I was working for another company, and I decided it was time for me to go out on my own.” Although business signs are the bread-and-butter of his business, Kalisek’s talents can be seen reflected in many varied ways throughout the community. “We’ve done everything from murals to churches,” shared Kalisek. “We’ve also built altars. Many of the neighboring Catholic Churches have some of our altars in them. We restored the original to resemble what it did years prior. One of the biggest projects we’ve completed was for the City of Luling. Their Yule Trail, during Christmas on Main, has over 150 scenes currently. Each one depicts a local business decked out in a Christmas theme. We add about six to ten every year.” And, similar to Santa’s workshop at the North Pole, Christmas isn’t just a holiday in December at George’s Art & Sign Showcase.

“We do Christmas all year long,” laughed Kalisek. “For us, the Christmas sales season starts on Labor Day. Sales really pick up at that point. I always enjoy the artwork the most. Creating commercials signs are OK, but when I can use my artistic abilities, that’s when it becomes fun.” Although the artistic ideas come from Kalisek, he’s quick to point out that he couldn’t run the business without his talented staff lending a helping hand. “When I opened the business, that first year, I made 50 signs to sell,” said Kalisek. “Now we make over 2,000 a year. When I started out, I thought this was just a fad, but it has endured, and sales have been level all of these years. I have two ladies helping me right now – one handles the work for the signs, and

another sells the pieces at the store. My sister also works with me on the detail and finish work. If I had to cut and do all the work myself, I wouldn’t have enough time. I am grateful to them.” Kalisek has also been busy preparing for retirement, turning part of his showcase into a venue that can be rented out for meetings, parties and family reunions. Plans are underway to include an outdoor park venue to allow for gathering under shade trees. “I’m 66 years old right now,” added Kalisek. “I want to stay in the business but not work at the pace I did in the past, allowing me time to focus on my art. Right now, I’m sure we’ve created over 60,000 pieces of yard art. If you drive anywhere, you’ll probably see them scattered around at Christmastime. My art is very simple, but creative. That’s where the fun is! I like to make something no one else has done before. I’m currently recreating the Yule Trail for Moulton. We’re doing their scenes this year and every year we’ll add to it, as the town raises funds for it. Drive only 29 minutes down the road and you’ll find Gonzales - a charming south central Texas town that has much to offer history enthusiasts and those who enjoy spending time outdoors. Museums, historic homes and theaters, public squares, and a scenic state park make up the many attractions in Gonzales that provide more than enough to do, regardless of your interests. A short 10.2 mile drive and you’ll find Shiner, home of the Spoetzl Brewery. Brewery tours are $5 for all over 18. Free tours are offered for 18 and under, first responders, clergy, active military service members and veterans. Continuous tours are available Monday through Saturday, as needed, starting at 11 a.m. with the last tour starting at 3 p.m. No reservation is required and all ages are welcome.

Take a short 26 minute drive east and you’ll find the quaint town of Hallettsville. Their annual Kolache Festival every September offers a full day of family entertainment. The day starts off with the Kolache Fest Parade on the town square, then moves to the Hallettsville Knights of Columbus Hall for the domino tournament, kolache bakeoff, polka music, arts and crafts booths, kolaches and more!
